so_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o man_n in_o all_o great_a change_n of_o estate_n that_o it_o fall_v into_o can_v but_o be_v affect_v with_o they_o therefore_o the_o scripture_n call_v it_o drunkenness_n a_o man_n may_v be_v drink_v with_o prosperity_n and_o adversity_n and_o a_o man_n be_v apt_a to_o be_v so_o that_o be_v when_o a_o man_n be_v drink_v his_o brain_n be_v weak_a and_o the_o beer_n or_o wine_n be_v strong_a so_o when_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n be_v weak_a and_o the_o operation_n be_v strong_a the_o estate_n that_o fall_v on_o he_o be_v strong_a it_o make_v he_o drink_v both_o way_n a_o man_n be_v drink_v with_o prosperity_n one_o while_n another_o while_n with_o adversity_n this_o be_v a_o time_n to_o be_v strong_a as_o the_o apostle_n express_v it_o phil._n 4._o i_o be_o able_a to_o want_v and_o to_o abound_v 4._o to_o pass_v through_o good_a report_n and_o evil_a report_n that_o be_v now_o in_o this_o great_a change_n if_o you_o talk_v of_o strength_n i_o be_o able_a to_o do_v all_o thing_n through_o strength_n from_o christ._n a_o man_n in_o a_o even_a condition_n it_o be_v nothing_o for_o he_o to_o keep_v his_o mind_n in_o a_o even_a temper_n but_o in_o the_o unevenness_n of_o a_o man_n condition_n now_o to_o keep_v his_o mind_n equal_o dispose_v that_o be_v the_o difficulty_n and_o it_o be_v not_o only_o difficult_a in_o that_o which_o rise_v from_o the_o unevenness_n of_o a_o man_n estate_n but_o the_o suddenness_n of_o the_o change_n when_o a_o sudden_a change_n come_v look_v to_o thyself_o be_v strong_a as_o we_o say_v of_o the_o body_n it_o be_v a_o rule_n of_o physician_n it_o endure_v not_o sudden_a change_n no_o more_o can_v the_o mind_n but_o it_o be_v apt_a to_o be_v disquiet_v and_o put_v out_o of_o temper_n as_o when_o a_o man_n have_v have_v a_o great_a heat_n and_o sudden_a cold_a come_v when_o a_o man_n be_v in_o one_o condition_n and_o sudden_o come_v into_o another_o now_o be_v the_o time_n to_o stir_v up_o strength_n that_o be_v the_o second_o three_o and_o last_o there_o be_v certain_a season_n and_o opportunity_n grace_n wherein_o a_o man_n be_v call_v to_o exercise_v such_o and_o such_o a_o grace_n now_o be_v the_o time_n when_o we_o must_v be_v strong_a to_o put_v that_o grace_n in_o practice_n sometime_o there_o be_v a_o season_n of_o use_v the_o grace_n of_o patience_n sometime_o of_o love_n sometime_o of_o temperance_n sometime_o one_o grace_n sometime_o another_o whensoever_o these_o season_n and_o opportunity_n come_v now_o put_v forth_o these_o grace_n and_o let_v they_o have_v their_o perfect_a work_n every_o grace_n in_o his_o season_n that_o be_v the_o time_n now_o when_o a_o man_n be_v to_o stir_v up_o his_o strength_n in_o those_o opportunity_n and_o turn_n of_o a_o man_n life_n such_o add_v to_o knowledge_n temperance_n it_o may_v be_v a_o man_n may_v know_v well_o enough_o what_o to_o do_v but_o he_o be_v draw_v aside_o with_o some_o pleasure_n and_o lust_n for_o it_o be_v usual_a for_o a_o man_n to_o know_v but_o because_o he_o be_v bias_v the_o wrong_a way_n with_o some_o inordinate_a affection_n he_o perform_v not_o that_o 〈◊〉_d know_v therefore_o say_v the_o apostle_n now_o be_v the_o season_n to_o add_v temperance_n to_o knowledge_n to_o abstain_v from_o those_o thing_n and_o beside_o as_o pleasure_n be_v a_o mean_n on_o the_o one_o side_n to_o keep_v he_o from_o the_o practice_n of_o what_o he_o know_v so_o there_o be_v likewise_o some_o danger_n and_o difficulty_n somewhat_o that_o a_o man_n be_v to_o suffer_v when_o a_o good_a action_n be_v to_o be_v do_v a_o so_o godliness_n when_o it_o come_v to_o a_o man_n if_o it_o find_v much_o mettle_n in_o a_o man_n many_o excellent_a virtue_n which_o nature_n have_v plant_v in_o he_o many_o moral_a virtue_n which_o custom_n and_o education_n have_v edded_v to_o it_o godliness_n it_o cast_v not_o away_o these_o but_o order_v they_o and_o break_v they_o and_o subdue_v they_o and_o make_v they_o serviceable_a to_o god_n and_o man_n so_o do_v the_o physician_n when_o he_o come_v to_o his_o patient_n he_o do_v not_o overthrow_v all_o the_o humour_n in_o the_o body_n and_o extinguish_v they_o but_o only_o he_o correct_v they_o only_o he_o add_v to_o those_o that_o be_v defective_a and_o take_v down_o those_o that_o be_v excessive_a and_o compose_v and_o help_v they_o into_o a_o right_a frame_n even_o so_o do_v godliness_n with_o nature_n it_o compose_v and_o order_v and_o add_v to_o nature_n it_o elevate_v nature_n it_o put_v a_o high_a end_n upon_o it_o it_o add_v a_o spiritualness_n to_o it_o as_o for_o example_n nature_n have_v make_v a_o man_n to_o love_v himself_o to_o love_v his_o child_n it_o be_v natural_a affection_n that_o have_v teach_v a_o man_n to_o grieve_v for_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o obnoxious_a to_o himself_o when_o it_o be_v upon_o a_o man_n godliness_n now_o do_v but_o make_v a_o right_a use_n of_o this_o when_o nature_n have_v dig_v a_o fountain_n of_o tear_n godliness_n do_v but_o turn_v the_o stream_n the_o right_a way_n when_o nature_n have_v put_v such_o a_o principle_n in_o we_o as_o love_v godliness_n come_v and_o teach_v we_o to_o love_v this_o and_o that_o for_o god_n and_o from_o god_n therefore_o our_o exhortation_n be_v that_o you_o will_v but_o add_v godliness_n to_o all_o these_o you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v that_o that_o be_v learn_v to_o be_v empty_v of_o yourselves_o to_o cast_v away_o all_o these_o as_o st._n paul_n do_v to_o reckon_v they_o as_o dross_n and_o dung_n that_o you_o may_v be_v find_v in_o christ._n as_o convince_v of_o it_o will_v bring_v we_o to_o serve_v god_n altogether_o for_o when_o you_o be_v come_v to_o this_o once_o to_o see_v that_o it_o be_v only_a god_n in_o who_o all_o your_o happiness_n be_v you_o will_v no_o long_o look_v to_o yourselves_o therefore_o you_o must_v learn_v to_o
knowledge_n the_o more_o strength_n for_o the_o spirit_n of_o divine_a truth_n be_v the_o strength_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o as_o the_o soul_n be_v unto_o the_o body_n so_o be_v the_o word_n unto_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o body_n be_v dead_a without_o the_o soul_n not_o able_a to_o do_v any_o thing_n so_o the_o inward_a man_n without_o the_o spiritual_a strength_n which_o be_v wrought_v in_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o save_a knowledge_n of_o the_o word_n be_v nothing_o 2._o but_o weakness_n therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v 1_o pet._n 2._o 2._o as_o new_o bear_v babe_n desire_v the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n that_o you_o may_v grow_v by_o it_o that_o be_v knowledge_n in_o the_o word_n will_v make_v you_o grow_v strong_a in_o christ_n the_o contrary_a to_o this_o we_o the_o notional_a or_o speculative_a knowledge_n of_o divine_a truth_n and_o yet_o be_v but_o weak_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n for_o there_o be_v a_o artificial_a knowledge_n which_o fill_v the_o brain_n but_o the_o spirit_n go_v no_o further_a and_o descend_v no_o low_a that_o be_v it_o do_v not_o sanctify_v that_o knowledge_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o inward_a man_n again_o there_o be_v a_o knowledge_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o experimental_a which_o be_v a_o operative_a knowledge_n and_o go_v along_o with_o this_o other_o knowledge_n and_o bend_v it_o to_o sanctification_n and_o be_v practical_a but_o yet_o you_o must_v know_v i_o say_v before_o you_o can_v be_v strong_a there_o must_v be_v some_o proportion_n between_o the_o spiritual_a knowledge_n and_o the_o spiritual_a strength_n as_o for_o example_n one_o man_n eat_v and_o be_v fat_a and_o lusty_a another_o man_n eat_v and_o be_v still_o lean_a so_o some_o have_v as_o much_o as_o other_o have_v and_o yet_o be_v not_o so_o strong_a as_o other_o and_o yet_o we_o say_v not_o but_o as_o the_o lean_a man_n be_v strengthen_v by_o the_o meat_n he_o eat_v so_o he_o that_o have_v weak_a knowledge_n be_v strengthen_v by_o it_o but_o where_o the_o lord_n work_v by_o his_o spirit_n the_o great_a knowledge_n according_o strength_n be_v increase_v therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o labour_n for_o a_o full_a measure_n not_o careful_a to_o add_v more_o knowledge_n unto_o that_o which_o you_o have_v it_o may_v be_v you_o pick_v some_o good_a thing_n from_o some_o sermon_n or_o from_o some_o good_a book_n but_o present_o you_o forget_v they_o you_o do_v not_o make_v it_o your_o own_o by_o meditation_n it_o slip_v out_o of_o your_o memory_n again_o and_o so_o do_v you_o no_o good_a but_o if_o you_o will_v be_v careful_a to_o add_v unto_o it_o you_o will_v grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n than_o you_o do_v and_o here_o be_v the_o misery_n of_o we_o that_o be_v spiritual_a builder_n other_o builder_n when_o they_o have_v build_v a_o house_n the_o owner_n look_v to_o it_o himself_o and_o keep_v it_o in_o reparation_n but_o when_o we_o have_v do_v what_o we_o can_v to_o build_v up_o in_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o think_v that_o you_o will_v put_v to_o your_o hand_n yourselves_o when_o we_o be_v to_o further_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n you_o begin_v to_o pull_v down_o your_o building_n again_o yourselves_o by_o your_o ignorant_a and_o loose_a life_n that_o be_v by_o follow_v your_o pleasure_n your_o sport_v and_o game_n and_o profane_v the_o lord_n day_n therefore_o you_o must_v labour_v to_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n if_o you_o will_v grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o second_o mean_n to_o be_v use_v if_o you_o will_v grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v this_o you_o must_v be_v diligent_a in_o the_o use_n of_o all_o mean_n as_o the_o wise_a man_n say_v the_o hand_n of_o the_o diligent_a make_v rich_a so_o where_o there_o be_v much_o diligence_n in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n there_o be_v much_o strength_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n no_o man_n get_v spiritual_a strength_n but_o they_o that_o be_v diligent_a and_o therefore_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o man_n be_v not_o strong_a in_o the_o spiritual_a strength_n because_o like_o the_o sluggard_n you_o be_v not_o diligent_a in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n that_o be_v you_o take_v no_o pain_n for_o grace_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o you_o get_v no_o increase_n for_o according_a to_o the_o proportion_n of_o your_o pain_n so_o be_v the_o inward_a man_n strengthen_v and_o as_o you_o use_v they_o more_o diligent_o so_o you_o find_v the_o strength_n of_o they_o more_o operative_a and_o powerful_a for_o it_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o body_n if_o you_o be_v not_o diligent_a and_o careful_a to_o feed_v the_o body_n it_o will_v wither_v and_o consume_v away_o and_o grow_v weak_a so_o if_o you_o feed_v not_o the_o soul_n diligent_o and_o use_v the_o mean_n constant_o you_o will_v breed_v weakness_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o more_o remiss_a and_o secure_a you_o be_v in_o the_o performance_n of_o holy_a duty_n the_o weak_a you_o be_v it_o may_v be_v you_o think_v it_o will_v not_o weaken_v you_o to_o omit_v private_a prayer_n but_o omit_v it_o once_o and_o it_o will_v make_v you_o careless_a and_o the_o more_o you_o neglect_v it_o the_o more_o unfit_a and_o undisposed_a will_v you_o find_v yourselves_o when_o you_o will_v and_o your_o strength_n will_v abate_v or_o you_o think_v you_o may_v profane_v one_o sabbath_n or_o you_o may_v take_v your_o pleasure_n immoderate_o sometime_o but_o belove_v it_o will_v make_v you_o secure_a that_o be_v the_o more_o a_o man_n do_v in_o this_o kind_a the_o more_o he_o may_v do_v for_o this_o be_v true_a in_o every_o act_n every_o act_n incline_v a_o habit_n and_o a_o habit_n bring_v custom_n so_o it_o be_v as_o true_a in_o good_a thing_n the_o beginning_n of_o good_a thing_n bring_v many_o particular_a good_a thing_n and_o therefore_o if_o you_o can_v but_o get_v your_o heart_n in_o a_o frame_n of_o grace_n you_o shall_v find_v a_o supply_n of_o grace_n because_o christ_n say_v unto_o who_o soever_o have_v unto_o he_o shall_v be_v give_v that_o be_v he_o that_o have_v grace_n &_o be_v careful_a in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n by_o god_n appointment_n he_o shall_v thrive_v in_o holiness_n for_o if_o you_o once_o get_v but_o the_o beginning_n of_o save_a grace_n and_o be_v industrious_a and_o careful_a to_o employ_v they_o than_o have_v you_o observe_v if_o you_o will_v have_v the_o mean_v effectual_a be_v this_o you_o must_v use_v all_o rule_n the_o mean_n if_o you_o use_v but_o part_n of_o the_o mean_v you_o will_v not_o grow_v strong_a for_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o body_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o inward_a man_n for_o the_o health_n and_o growth_n of_o the_o body_n a_o man_n will_v use_v all_o
may_v strengthen_v and_o enable_v we_o to_o serve_v he_o that_o so_o we_o may_v please_v he_o in_o all_o thing_n with_o fear_n and_o reverence_n so_o likewise_o 2_o pet._n 3._o ult_n but_o grow_v in_o grace_n and_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n growth_n be_v proper_o of_o that_o which_o be_v a_o permanent_a thing_n of_o that_o which_o be_v a_o inherent_a thing_n as_o when_o a_o thing_n be_v say_v to_o grow_v white_a and_o white_a etc._n etc._n so_o i_o say_v grace_n be_v a_o inherent_a quality_n which_o be_v stamp_v upon_o the_o heart_n which_o be_v beget_v in_o the_o heart_n but_o then_o i_o add_v that_o it_o be_v a_o supernatural_a quality_n that_o be_v it_o be_v such_o a_o quality_n as_o elevate_v and_o raise_v a_o man_n that_o supernatural_a enable_v a_o man_n to_o do_v more_o than_o he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v by_o the_o strength_n of_o nature_n as_o for_o example_n to_o illustrate_v it_o if_o you_o take_v water_n of_o itself_o you_o know_v it_o be_v able_a to_o make_v your_o hand_n cold_a or_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v put_v into_o it_o but_o if_o you_o will_v have_v water_n do_v any_o thing_n above_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o you_o must_v put_v in_o a_o high_a quality_n if_o you_o will_v have_v it_o heat_n you_o must_v put_v it_o to_o the_o fire_n so_o it_o be_v here_o we_o be_v able_a to_o do_v the_o thing_n agreeable_a to_o nature_n without_o any_o special_a help_n but_o when_o we_o be_v to_o do_v the_o duty_n of_o new_a obedience_n to_o please_v god_n to_o do_v thing_n that_o nature_n can_v reach_v unto_o we_o must_v have_v a_o high_a quality_n infuse_v into_o our_o heart_n therefore_o i_o say_v grace_n be_v a_o supernatural_a quality_n that_o raise_v nature_n that_o elevate_v it_o that_o help_v it_o to_o do_v more_o than_o otherwise_o it_o be_v able_a to_o do_v again_o i_o add_v that_o it_o be_v a_o supernatural_a peculiar_a quality_n peculiar_a because_o there_o be_v some_o common_a supernatural_a gift_n as_o those_o gift_n of_o temperance_n knowledge_n patience_n meekness_n and_o the_o like_a these_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o these_o be_v many_o time_n wrought_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o those_o that_o be_v not_o true_o sanctify_v and_o these_o be_v supernatural_a gift_n too_o but_o yet_o they_o be_v but_o common_a gift_n they_o be_v such_o gift_n as_o the_o holy_a ghost_n bestow_v upon_o those_o that_o be_v not_o elect_v to_o life_n but_o now_o save_v grace_n be_v a_o gift_n peculiar_a to_o the_o elect_n peculiar_a to_o those_o that_o be_v within_o the_o covenant_n therefore_o only_a grace_n that_o make_v a_o man_n able_a to_o please_v he_o because_o the_o lord_n delight_v in_o that_o which_o be_v like_a to_o himself_o this_o grace_n be_v the_o stamp_n and_o image_n of_o god_n till_o a_o man_n then_o have_v such_o a_o quality_n in_o he_o and_o that_o all_o the_o work_n that_o he_o do_v proceed_v from_o this_o image_n he_o please_v not_o god_n last_o i_o add_v it_o grace_n see_v in_o it_o some_o leaven_n as_o i_o may_v say_v of_o grace_n some_o taste_n of_o grace_n such_o a_o grace_n as_o be_v bestow_v upon_o a_o man_n as_o a_o common_a gift_n it_o help_v a_o man_n to_o do_v such_o a_o particular_a business_n it_o make_v he_o meek_a it_o make_v he_o temperate_a it_o make_v he_o to_o understand_v his_o profession_n it_o make_v he_o able_a to_o rule_v etc._n etc._n but_o yet_o this_o property_n it_o have_v not_o to_o have_v a_o general_a influence_n into_o all_o that_o a_o man_n do_v into_o all_o his_o action_n for_o that_o be_v only_o the_o property_n of_o save_a grace_n it_o enable_v we_o to_o please_v god_n in_o all_o thing_n so_o we_o see_v brief_o what_o grace_n be_v now_o i_o say_v this_o grace_n strengthen_v we_o wheresoever_o it_o be_v it_o
