to_o the_o king_n most_o excellent_a majesty_n the_o humble_a petition_n of_o the_o gentry_n minister_n freeholder_n and_o other_o inhabitant_n of_o the_o county_n of_o york_n assemble_v by_o his_o majesty_n special_a summons_n at_o heworth_n moor_n near_o the_o city_n of_o york_n on_o friday_n the_o three_o of_o june_n 1642._o show_v that_o this_o particular_a county_n most_o affectionate_a to_o your_o majesty_n service_n have_v well_o nigh_o for_o these_o three_o year_n last_o pass_v be_v the_o stage_n whereon_o the_o tragical_a misery_n which_o necessary_o accompany_v war_n and_o army_n have_v be_v present_v and_o act_v whereby_o the_o general_a wealth_n and_o plenty_n of_o this_o county_n be_v exhaust_v and_o bring_v very_o low_a which_o weight_n of_o misery_n be_v sensible_o become_v much_o more_o heavy_a by_o reason_n of_o your_o majesty_n distance_n in_o residence_n and_o difference_n in_o counsel_n from_o your_o great_a council_n the_o parliament_n beget_v great_a distemper_n and_o distraction_n throughout_o the_o kingdom_n and_o have_v special_o among_o we_o produce_v faction_n and_o division_n draw_v into_o these_o part_n great_a number_n of_o discontent_a person_n that_o may_v too_o just_o be_v fear_v do_v affect_v the_o public_a ruin_n for_o their_o private_a advantage_n all_o which_o evil_n be_v daily_o foment_v and_o make_v more_o formidable_a by_o your_o majesty_n draw_v together_o as_o we_o conceive_v not_o according_a to_o law_n many_o company_n of_o the_o train_a band_n and_o other_o both_o horse_n and_o foot_n of_o this_o county_n and_o retain_v multitude_n of_o commander_n and_o cavalier_n from_o other_o part_n and_o by_o the_o daily_a resort_n of_o recusant_n and_o person_n disaffect_v in_o religion_n to_o your_o majesty_n court_n at_o york_n and_o by_o the_o great_a preparation_n of_o arm_n and_o other_o warlike_a provision_n which_o beget_v in_o we_o fear_n of_o war_n to_o the_o great_a ter●our_n and_o amazement_n of_o we_o your_o majesty_n peaceable_a subject_n and_o to_o the_o great_a decay_n of_o all_o commerce_n and_o industrious_a course_n for_o the_o wealth_n and_o prosperity_n of_o the_o country_n especial_o of_o clothing_n which_o be_v the_o main_a subsistence_n of_o this_o county_n and_o be_v since_o your_o majesty_n residence_n among_o we_o and_o the_o follow_a distraction_n thereupon_o sudden_o obstruct_v insomuch_o that_o many_o thousand_o family_n who_o be_v of_o and_o have_v their_o livelihood_n by_o the_o trade_n of_o clothing_n be_v now_o at_o the_o point_n of_o utter_a undo_n which_o inevitable_o will_v prove_v to_o be_v of_o dangerous_a consequence_n and_o will_v be_v the_o inlet_n to_o our_o approach_a and_o unavoidable_a ruin_n unless_o your_o majesty_n please_v gracious_o to_o give_v redress_n by_o remove_v the_o cause_n which_o produce_v these_o miserable_a effect_n it_o be_v too_o true_a that_o very_o many_o in_o these_o and_o other_o part_n of_o the_o kingdom_n do_v whole_o withdraw_v themselves_o from_o their_o former_a commerce_n and_o deal_v and_o other_o both_o merchant_n and_o chapman_n do_v now_o general_o refuse_v to_o make_v payment_n for_o good_n long_v since_o sell_v and_o deliver_v allege_v that_o other_o refuse_v to_o pay_v they_o for_o any_o commodity_n former_o sell_v till_o the_o fear_n and_o distraction_n of_o the_o land_n be_v settle_v which_o if_o not_o sudden_o prevent_v will_v forthwith_o overturn_v all_o such_o way_n of_o advantage_n and_o comfort_n as_o have_v former_o make_v this_o kingdom_n and_o this_o county_n in_o particular_a prosperous_a and_o happy_a we_o do_v therefore_o in_o all_o humility_n and_o duty_n in_o the_o sense_n of_o our_o present_a deplorable_a condition_n beseech_v your_o majesty_n to_o pardon_v we_o if_o we_o importune_v your_o majesty_n more_o than_o other_o since_o we_o have_v endure_v and_o be_v in_o hazard_n more_o than_o any_o and_o that_o from_o these_o apprehension_n we_o may_v offer_v to_o your_o majesty_n our_o earnest_a petition_n for_o redress_v and_o prevention_n of_o these_o evil_n daily_o threaten_a danger_n to_o your_o majesty_n and_o destruction_n to_o we_o which_o we_o conceive_v be_v impossible_a any_o other_o way_n to_o be_v effect_v than_o by_o your_o majesty_n entertain_v a_o right_a understanding_n betwixt_o yourself_o and_o parliament_n and_o afford_v your_o gracious_a ear_n and_o consent_n to_o such_o counsel_n and_o proposition_n as_o shall_v be_v tender_v by_o they_o to_o your_o majesty_n for_o the_o honour_n and_o greatness_n of_o your_o majesty_n and_o posterity_n and_o the_o good_a of_o this_o church_n and_o kingdom_n and_o by_o your_o majesty_n decline_v all_o other_o counsel_n whatsoever_o and_o unite_n your_o confidence_n to_o your_o parliament_n and_o that_o your_o majesty_n will_v in_o no_o way_n think_v fit_a to_o put_v we_o upon_o that_o rock_n of_o divide_v the_o duty_n we_o owe_v to_o your_o majesty_n your_o parliament_n and_o the_o whole_a kingdom_n to_o which_o we_o be_v so_o deep_o engage_v by_o our_o protestation_n which_o your_o majesty_n to_o our_o knowledge_n never_o dissent_v from_o nor_o declare_v against_o and_o that_o whilst_o your_o majesty_n expect_v our_o performance_n in_o one_o part_n thereof_o we_o may_v not_o be_v equal_o engage_v impeach_v at_o all_o or_o in_o the_o least_o degree_n go_v less_o than_o our_o duty_n in_o the_o other_o which_o we_o stand_v resolve_v of_o by_o no_o mean_n either_o of_o fear_n or_o favour_n to_o be_v draw_v to_o do_v and_o that_o your_o majesty_n will_v take_v into_o consideration_n that_o your_o parliament_n be_v the_o supreme_a judicatory_n of_o your_o kingdom_n the_o very_a essence_n thereof_o must_v of_o very_a necessity_n be_v destroy_v if_o their_o counsel_n and_o determination_n be_v subject_v to_o alteration_n or_o reversal_n by_o the_o counsel_n or_o opinion_n of_o any_o private_a person_n how_o learned_a or_o judicious_a soever_o and_o see_v your_o majesty_n have_v pass_v a_o act_n that_o this_o parliament_n shall_v not_o be_v dissolve_v or_o adjourn_v without_o consent_n of_o your_o majesty_n and_o both_o house_n we_o humble_o beseech_v your_o majesty_n to_o take_v into_o your_o gracious_a and_o provident_a thought_n that_o nothing_o may_v be_v do_v tend_v thereunto_o and_o that_o the_o lord_n and_o great_a officer_n now_o call_v hither_o by_o your_o majesty_n command_n may_v speedy_o return_v to_o the_o high_a court_n of_o parliament_n whereby_o it_o may_v be_v evident_a to_o the_o world_n that_o your_o majesty_n intend_v not_o to_o deciine_v the_o law_n so_o enact_v and_o that_o since_o your_o majesty_n have_v gracious_o declare_v your_o confidence_n in_o the_o affection_n of_o this_o county_n your_o majesty_n will_v not_o think_v it_o fit_v a_o extraordinary_a guard_n shall_v be_v raise_v ther●out_a and_o the_o cavalier_n and_o other_o of_o that_o quality_n still_o continue_v about_o your_o majesty_n as_o man_n most_o usesull_a and_o as_o if_o keep_v for_o some_o design_n they_o not_o have_v for_o aught_o we_o know_v either_o interest_n in_o or_o affection_n to_o the_o public_a good_a their_o language_n and_o behaviour_n speak_v nothing_o else_o but_o division_n and_o war_n and_o their_o advantage_n consist_v in_o that_o which_o be_v most_o destructive_a to_o other_o and_o last_o that_o since_o your_o majesty_n have_v call_v in_o this_o county_n to_o attend_v your_o majesty_n this_o day_n your_o petitioner_n do_v most_o humble_o supplicate_v that_o none_o either_o cavalier_n or_o other_o who_o in_o truth_n have_v not_o present_a fortune_n in_o this_o county_n may_v be_v admit_v into_o any_o meeting_n this_o day_n concerning_o the_o public_a business_n thereof_o or_o hereafter_o into_o any_o present_a vote_n or_o consultation_n when_o any_o further_a meeting_n may_v be_v to_o prepare_v and_o consider_v of_o some_o fit_a answer_n to_o what_o your_o majesty_n shall_v propound_v we_o humble_o conceive_v it_o neither_o just_a nor_o equal_a but_o a_o thing_n to_o be_v protest_v against_o that_o any_o whosoever_o shall_v be_v thrust_v upon_o we_o as_o man_n of_o this_o county_n that_o be_v not_o either_o by_o their_o fortune_n or_o residence_n any_o part_n of_o we_o and_o now_o your_o petitioner_n do_v even_o hearty_o pray_v that_o the_o god_n of_o heaven_n in_o who_o hand_n be_v the_o heart_n of_o king_n will_v this_o day_n incline_v your_o majesty_n heart_n serious_o to_o consider_v these_o present_a and_o imminent_a misery_n that_o this_o your_o kingdom_n now_o groan_v under_o in_o the_o peace_n whereof_o visible_o under_o god_n consist_v the_o preservation_n of_o the_o protestant_a religion_n the_o redemption_n of_o our_o brethren_n in_o ireland_n and_o the_o establishment_n of_o that_o kingdom_n to_o your_o majesty_n and_o posterity_n from_o those_o desperate_a and_o unparalleled_a rebel_n that_o so_o your_o majesty_n may_v gracious_o grant_v these_o
