a_o appendix_n to_o the_o three_o part_n of_o the_o friendly_a debate_n be_v a_o letter_n of_o the_o conformist_n to_o the_o nonconformist_a together_o with_o a_o postscript_n by_o the_o same_o author_n london_n print_v for_o h._n eversden_n under_o the_o crown_n in_o west_n smithfield_n 1670_o the_o preface_n if_o i_o be_v not_o sway_v more_o by_o the_o love_n of_o truth_n than_o of_o my_o own_o credit_n i_o shall_v for_o many_o reason_n have_v suppress_v this_o follow_a letter_n which_o discover_v so_o many_o gross_a falsehood_n in_o the_o reflection_n which_o have_v be_v make_v on_o the_o friendly_a debate_n that_o whatsoever_o censure_n may_v be_v pass_v on_o i_o the_o reader_n may_v receive_v some_o profit_n from_o it_o which_o that_o i_o may_v not_o hinder_v by_o put_v too_o big_a a_o book_n into_o his_o hand_n i_o have_v cast_v away_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o what_o i_o have_v write_v about_o other_o untruth_n and_o absurd_a reason_n hope_v that_o this_o will_v be_v sufficient_a to_o make_v those_o that_o peruse_v it_o wary_a and_o observant_a and_o then_o they_o may_v detect_v the_o rest_n themselves_o without_o my_o assistance_n and_o true_o the_o great_a difficulty_n i_o meet_v withal_o in_o this_o work_n be_v to_o resolve_v what_o thing_n i_o shall_v single_v out_o as_o instance_n of_o the_o impertinency_n falsifying_n and_o misunderstanding_n etc._n etc._n of_o my_o new_a adversary_n which_o prove_v i_o confess_v a_o business_n so_o tedious_a in_o such_o a_o great_a number_n as_o lay_v before_o i_o that_o to_o ease_v myself_o of_o too_o great_a a_o labour_n i_o be_v constrain_v at_o last_o to_o take_v they_o just_a as_o they_o come_v next_o to_o my_o thought_n if_o it_o chance_v by_o this_o mean_n that_o i_o have_v leave_v any_o thing_n untouched_a which_o some_o desire_v most_o of_o all_o shall_v have_v be_v handle_v there_o be_v no_o remedy_n and_o it_o be_v better_a that_o they_o shall_v want_v complete_a satisfaction_n than_o that_o all_o shall_v be_v tire_v with_o the_o length_n of_o my_o discourse_n beside_o i_o find_v that_o i_o myself_o have_v suffer_v by_o it_o for_o i_o have_v pass_v by_o sundry_a reflection_n wherein_o my_o private_a person_n be_v more_o particular_o concern_v which_o come_v not_o to_o mind_v till_o my_o letter_n i_o think_v be_v swell_v to_o too_o large_a a_o bulk_n this_o be_v some_o sign_n that_o i_o be_o not_o so_o melancholy_a as_o my_o adversary_n muse_n for_o such_o man_n use_v to_o be_v more_o resentive_a than_o to_o forget_v the_o injury_n that_o be_v do_v they_o and_o that_o i_o have_v no_o list_n to_o write_v a_o book_n mere_o to_o clear_v myself_o from_o false_a imputation_n and_o indeed_o i_o find_v other_o matter_n to_o make_v this_o treatise_n large_a than_o i_o intend_v which_o be_v a_o case_n that_o come_v to_o my_o hand_n after_o i_o have_v consider_v the_o apology_n whatsoever_o belong_v to_o i_o in_o those_o sheet_n i_o have_v also_o spend_v a_o few_o thought_n upon_o but_o take_v not_o myself_o to_o be_v concern_v in_o his_o bold_a challenge_n to_o answer_v a_o book_n which_o i_o have_v not_o the_o least_o knowledge_n of_o and_o which_o another_o person_n he_o tell_v i_o be_v more_o particular_o bind_v i_o be_o sure_a be_v better_a able_a to_o reply_v unto_o if_o he_o think_v it_o worthy_a his_o pain_n i_o can_v tell_v neither_o whether_o that_o person_n be_v engage_v in_o honour_n to_o accept_v the_o challenge_n no_o though_o he_o proclaim_v he_o a_o coward_n if_o he_o do_v not_o for_o to_o answer_v some_o man_n as_o one_o well_o speak_v be_v but_o to_o comment_v upon_o their_o gibberish_n for_o those_o that_o understand_v it_o not_o and_o thereby_o to_o bring_v their_o folly_n into_o more_o credit_n and_o request_n i_o apply_v not_o this_o to_o that_o book_n which_o as_o i_o say_v i_o be_o perfect_o ignorant_a of_o and_o may_v deserve_v consideration_n but_o to_o such_o vainglorious_a challenge_n as_o i_o have_v see_v from_o mere_a barbarian_n and_o savage_n who_o imagine_v roar_a and_o be_v furious_a be_v far_o more_o noble_a than_o speak_v and_o reason_v mr._n vavasor_n powel_n i_o remember_v make_v a_o since_o the_o goth_n sack_v rome_n and_o as_o evident_o demonstrate_v that_o he_o think_v his_o sufficiency_n to_o be_v great_a than_o it_o be_v and_o that_o man_n take_v themselves_o sometime_o to_o christian_a or_o a_o good_a subject_n that_o live_v in_o defiance_n of_o they_o for_o this_o end_n look_v back_o to_o what_o be_v say_v concern_v the_o nature_n of_o a_o law_n which_o will_v lead_v you_o to_o a_o right_a understanding_n in_o this_o matter_n it_o be_v a_o declaration_n of_o the_o will_n of_o a_o prince_n concern_v those_o thing_n which_o he_o judge_v needful_a to_o be_v do_v or_o avoid_v by_o his_o subject_n the_o more_o needful_a than_o he_o judge_v any_o thing_n to_o be_v do_v or_o avoid_v for_o the_o public_a good_a and_o safety_n etc._n etc._n and_o the_o more_o it_o appear_v his_o will_n be_v set_v upon_o it_o the_o more_o his_o law_n be_v to_o be_v reverence_v and_o the_o great_a the_o offence_n be_v if_o it_o be_v break_v especial_o open_o and_o with_o a_o high_a hand_n now_o you_o may_v know_v this_o partly_o by_o the_o matter_n itself_o as_o all_o wise_a man_n have_v determine_v if_o it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o justice_n charity_n piety_n religion_n or_o peace_n partly_o by_o the_o manner_n and_o form_n of_o command_v and_o forbid_v partly_o by_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o penalty_n threaten_v in_o case_n of_o disobedience_n and_o last_o very_o much_o by_o the_o preface_n to_o his_o law_n in_o which_o if_o he_o be_v please_v to_o expound_v the_o reason_n and_o the_o necessity_n of_o it_o and_o they_o appear_v to_o be_v great_a and_o weighty_a his_o mind_n and_o will_n be_v thereby_o without_o all_o doubt_n declare_v that_o a_o more_o than_o ordinary_a regard_n be_v have_v to_o that_o law_n of_o he_o apply_v now_o all_o this_o if_o you_o please_v to_o the_o law_n which_o have_v move_v this_o dispute_n and_o you_o will_v find_v that_o i_o have_v reason_n to_o say_v what_o i_o do_v and_o that_o they_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o equal_v the_o breach_n of_o other_o law_n which_o they_o mention_v with_o the_o breach_n of_o that_o a_o act_n of_o the_o seventeen_o of_o our_o present_a sovereign_n make_v at_o oxford_n require_v such_o person_n as_o have_v not_o and_o shall_v not_o perform_v some_o thing_n therein_o name_v not_o to_o come_v within_o five_o mile_n of_o any_o corporation_n etc._n etc._n the_o breach_n of_o which_o law_n i_o hold_v to_o be_v a_o grievous_a sin_n and_o when_o a_o man_n live_v in_o it_o and_o in_o defiance_n of_o it_o keep_v conventicle_n i_o say_v his_o piety_n and_o honesty_n may_v just_o be_v call_v in_o question_n my_o reason_n be_v because_o it_o be_v plain_a to_o i_o by_o those_o indication_n now_o name_v that_o the_o lawgiver_n judge_n it_o to_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o great_a consequence_n and_o that_o he_o be_v much_o concern_v it_o shall_v be_v observe_v for_o first_o the_o preface_n to_o it_o be_v solemn_a and_o let_v we_o know_v that_o both_o religion_n and_o the_o civil_a peace_n and_o tranquillity_n depend_v upon_o it_o and_o that_o they_o be_v remove_v from_o corporation_n because_o if_o they_o be_v there_o they_o may_v take_v a_o opportunity_n the_o better_a to_o distil_v the_o poisonous_a principle_n of_o schism_n and_o rebellion_n into_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o majesty_n subject_n to_o the_o great_a danger_n of_o the_o church_n and_o kingdom_n this_o be_v the_o reason_n and_o ground_n of_o the_o act_n which_o be_v as_o great_a as_o well_o can_v be_v and_o therefore_o the_o penalty_n be_v great_a forty_o pound_n for_o every_o offence_n and_o as_o i_o remember_v imprisonment_n for_o six_o month_n without_o bail_n or_o mainprize_n if_o two_o justices_z of_o peace_n please_v unless_o upon_o or_o before_o such_o commitment_n they_o shall_v swear_v and_o subscribe_v the_o oath_n and_o declaration_n mention_v in_o the_o act._n compare_v now_o this_o with_o the_o other_o about_o bury_v in_o linen_n and_o about_o wagon_n which_o they_o make_v such_o a_o talk_n of_o and_o you_o will_v find_v neither_o the_o penalty_n five_a pound_n in_o one_o act_n and_o forty_o shilling_n in_o the_o other_o nor_o the_o reason_n give_v in_o the_o preface_v any_o thing_n near_o so_o considerable_a as_o those_o now_o mention_v which_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o the_o lawgiver_n do_v not_o judge_v they_o of_o equal_a moment_n and_o necessity_n and_o consequent_o that_o the_o transgression_n of_o these_o law_n be_v not_o so_o heinous_a nor_o so_o much_o against_o his_o will_n as_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o other_o the_o penalty_n also_o for_o offence_n against_o these_o be_v order_v to_o be_v so_o employ_v that_o they_o may_v do_v as_o much_o good_a to_o the_o public_a as_o the_o offence_n do_v hurt_v set_v aside_o contempt_n of_o authority_n which_o i_o can_v excuse_v but_o may_v not_o a_o lawgiver_n you_o will_v say_v be_v mistake_v in_o his_o judgement_n as_o some_o think_v there_o be_v a_o error_n in_o that_o which_o be_v enact_v about_o wagon_n and_o if_o he_o be_v why_o shall_v we_o observe_v such_o a_o law_n i_o answer_v i_o be_o not_o bind_v absolute_o to_o be_v of_o the_o law-giver_n opinion_n that_o all_o such_o thing_n be_v for_o the_o public_a good_a which_o he_o decree_v i_o be_o only_a to_o follow_v his_o will_n and_o do_v what_o he_o enjoin_v when_o i_o can_v without_o sin_n and_o this_o i_o take_v myself_o bind_v to_o even_o when_o i_o conceive_v it_o be_v better_o for_o the_o public_a if_o it_o be_v otherwise_o ordain_v what_o will_v you_o say_v again_o when_o there_o be_v a_o intolerable_a inconvenience_n and_o a_o very_a grievous_a evil_n to_o the_o subject_n by_o obey_v that_o be_v the_o thing_n i_o know_v you_o will_v be_v resolve_v in_o and_o true_o the_o moral_a divine_n and_o lawyer_n say_v no._n it_o be_v to_o be_v suppose_v when_o that_o case_n happen_v that_o it_o not_o be_v the_o intention_n of_o a_o prince_n to_o make_v his_o subject_n miserable_a he_o will_v not_o have_v make_v that_o law_n if_o he_o can_v have_v foresee_v such_o a_o mischief_n and_o therefore_o it_o cease_v of_o itself_o to_o be_v a_o law_n and_o lose_v its_o obligation_n but_o then_o in_o the_o reduce_v this_o to_o practice_n they_o tell_v you_o there_o be_v these_o caution_n to_o be_v observe_v first_o obedience_n be_v never_o to_o be_v deny_v but_o when_o the_o law_n be_v against_o the_o public_a good_a if_o it_o be_v still_o consistent_a with_o the_o public_a interest_n though_o it_o be_v to_o the_o damage_n of_o some_o particular_a person_n they_o may_v not_o break_v the_o law_n again_o it_o must_v be_v practise_v then_o only_o when_o the_o mischief_n to_o the_o public_a be_v not_o small_a but_o so_o great_a that_o in_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o best_a and_o most_o prudent_a person_n it_o be_v a_o sufficient_a cause_n of_o disannul_v a_o law_n and_o do_v outweigh_v the_o evil_a of_o material_a disobedience_n and_o three_o this_o mischief_n likewise_o must_v be_v certain_a and_o notorious_a not_o only_o in_o our_o fancy_n the_o security_n of_o which_o be_v when_o it_o be_v declare_v so_o by_o the_o voice_n of_o all_o man_n at_o least_o of_o all_o the_o wise_a and_o good_a and_o not_o only_o by_o a_o party_n who_o particular_a interest_n be_v concern_v to_o vote_n it_o to_o be_v unsupportable_a and_o yet_o in_o case_n the_o true_o wise_a and_o good_a on_o all_o side_n think_v it_o so_o they_o ought_v not_o fourthly_a to_o disobey_v the_o law_n with_o the_o scandal_n and_o offence_n of_o other_o man_n it_o must_v be_v do_v so_o modest_o humble_o and_o with_o fear_n that_o the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n be_v not_o teach_v hereby_o to_o slight_v all_o law_n upon_o little_a pretence_n and_o trifle_a regard_n and_o last_o to_o secure_v all_o we_o must_v if_o we_o have_v time_n and_o opportunity_n ask_v leave_n of_o the_o lawgiver_n who_o leave_n be_v to_o be_v presume_v in_o such_o case_n only_o in_o time_n of_o a_o sudden_a danger_n and_o have_v do_v thus_o if_o we_o shall_v be_v mistake_v and_o judge_v that_o a_o public_a mischief_n which_o be_v not_o yet_o the_o guilt_n of_o our_o disobedience_n will_v not_o be_v deadly_a but_o such_o as_o will_v easy_o find_v pardon_n both_o with_o god_n and_o man_n to_o this_o purpose_n you_o may_v read_v more_o in_o that_o doctor_n bishop_n taylor_n out_o of_o who_o this_o casuist_n quote_v a_o line_n or_o two_o relate_v to_o this_o matter_n only_o separate_v from_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o his_o discourse_n which_o give_v i_o occasion_n to_o note_v his_o disingenuity_n for_o beside_o all_o the_o caution_n which_o the_o bishop_n etc._n bishop_n rule_n of_o conscience_n book_n 3_o r._n 3._o n._n 10._o etc._n etc._n there_o give_v i_o observe_v since_o i_o write_v all_o this_o that_o
