they_o as_o infallible_a doctor_n of_o the_o chair_n and_o receive_v all_o their_o tenet_n and_o tradition_n as_o oracle_n and_o as_o they_o be_v high_o esteem_v of_o by_o the_o people_n so_o they_o have_v also_o a_o very_a good_a opinion_n of_o themselves_o they_o love_v the_o uppermost_a room_n at_o feast_n and_o the_o chief_a seat_n in_o the_o synagogue_n and_o greeting_n in_o the_o market_n and_o to_o be_v call_v of_o man_n rabbi_n they_o despise_v all_o other_o person_n in_o comparison_n of_o themselves_o and_o as_o they_o sit_v in_o moses_n his_o seat_n so_o no_o doubt_n but_o they_o expect_v as_o honourable_a a_o place_n in_o the_o bosom_n of_o abraham_n but_o though_o this_o fair_a outside_n of_o they_o appear_v very_o lovely_a and_o take_v much_o with_o the_o people_n yet_o our_o saviour_n see_v through_o it_o and_o discern_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o rottenness_n and_o hypocrisy_n in_o their_o heart_n that_o though_o they_o make_v clean_o the_o outside_n of_o the_o cup_n and_o of_o the_o platter_n yet_o within_o they_o be_v full_a of_o extortion_n and_o excess_n that_o though_o they_o fast_v often_o and_o make_v long_a prayer_n yet_o it_o be_v only_o for_o a_o pretence_n to_o devour_v widow_n house_n that_o though_o they_o pay_v tithe_n of_o mint_n and_o anise_v and_o cummin_n yet_o they_o omit_v the_o weighty_a matter_n of_o the_o law_n judgement_n mercy_n and_o faith_n and_o that_o the_o gate_n of_o heaven_n will_v prove_v too_o straight_o to_o give_v any_o entrance_n to_o their_o broad_a phylactery_n and_o large_a border_n of_o their_o garment_n and_o therefore_o he_o often_o charge_v his_o disciple_n to_o beware_v of_o tread_v in_o their_o step_n not_o to_o acquiesce_v in_o such_o a_o vain_a and_o hypocritical_a ostentation_n of_o religion_n which_o however_o it_o may_v gain_v the_o applause_n of_o man_n who_o can_v see_v no_o further_o than_o the_o outside_n will_v be_v nothing_o worth_a when_o it_o come_v to_o be_v examine_v before_o his_o tribunal_n but_o to_o labour_v for_o sincerity_n and_o pureness_n of_o heart_n without_o which_o no_o man_n shall_v see_v god_n for_o i_o say_v etc._n etc._n in_o the_o handle_n of_o which_o word_n i_o shall_v endeavour_v 1._o to_o show_v you_o what_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n be_v which_o will_v not_o be_v think_v worthy_a to_o be_v admit_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n 2._o what_o manner_n of_o righteousness_n we_o must_v be_v that_o will_v procure_v we_o a_o entrance_n thither_o 1._o for_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n if_o we_o examine_v it_o by_o the_o character_n which_o the_o holy_a evangelist_n give_v we_o of_o it_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o extreme_o faulty_a and_o indeed_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o suppose_v it_o to_o be_v otherwise_o when_o we_o consider_v how_o many_o sharp_a reproof_n and_o dreadful_a woe_n be_v denounce_v against_o it_o by_o our_o saviour_n the_o chief_a particular_n which_o render_v it_o faulty_a and_o deficient_a be_v these_o 1._o their_o righteousness_n can_v not_o be_v acceptable_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n for_o as_o much_o as_o in_o general_n they_o have_v a_o very_a false_a notion_n of_o the_o obligation_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n which_o they_o interpret_v only_o in_o the_o literal_a sense_n of_o the_o word_n and_o think_v that_o it_o extend_v only_o to_o outward_a action_n but_o reach_v not_o to_o the_o inward_a thought_n and_o intention_n of_o the_o mind_n so_o long_o as_o they_o wash_v their_o hand_n they_o regard_v not_o the_o foulness_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o so_o long_o as_o they_o keep_v themselves_o free_a from_o any_o open_a and_o external_a breach_n of_o the_o commandment_n they_o think_v themselves_o innocent_a though_o their_o mind_n be_v never_o so_o much_o set_v upon_o wickedness_n so_o long_o as_o they_o abstain_v from_o open_a adultery_n they_o think_v they_o may_v lust_n after_o a_o woman_n and_o still_o be_v chaste_a so_o long_o as_o they_o keep_v their_o hand_n from_o shed_v any_o blood_n they_o think_v it_o no_o sin_n or_o at_o least_o a_o small_a and_o venial_a one_o such_o as_o god_n will_v take_v no_o notice_n of_o to_o hate_v their_o brother_n in_o their_o heart_n so_o long_o as_o they_o do_v not_o bear_v false_a witness_n against_o their_o neighbour_n before_o a_o judge_n in_o open_a court_n they_o think_v it_o no_o crime_n to_o backbite_v and_o slander_v he_o and_o that_o they_o may_v secure_o blast_v his_o reputation_n and_o wound_v his_o good_a name_n without_o any_o prejudice_n to_o their_o own_o soul_n so_o long_o as_o they_o abstain_v from_o plain_a theft_n and_o keep_v their_o hand_n from_o pick_v and_o steal_v they_o think_v that_o like_o the_o priest_n and_o the_o levite_n in_o the_o parable_n they_o may_v innocent_o pass_v by_o their_o neighbour_n who_o they_o see_v wound_v by_o thief_n and_o that_o no_o obligation_n lay_v upon_o they_o to_o relieve_v he_o in_o his_o distress_n thus_o they_o gross_o err_v in_o their_o interpretation_n of_o the_o law_n which_o reach_v not_o only_o our_o action_n but_o our_o word_n and_o our_o thought_n and_o confine_n our_o tongue_n and_o our_o heart_n as_o well_o as_o our_o hand_n such_o commandment_n as_o these_o they_o teach_v to_o be_v the_o least_o commandment_n that_o the_o breach_n of_o they_o be_v a_o very_a light_n and_o trivial_a sin_n and_o that_o for_o a_o idle_a word_n or_o for_o a_o lustful_a or_o malicious_a thought_n or_o intention_n provide_v that_o it_o break_v not_o out_o into_o action_n there_o be_v no_o fear_n of_o damnation_n but_o our_o saviour_n pass_v a_o very_a severe_a sentence_n upon_o they_o for_o teach_v this_o doctrine_n in_o the_o verse_n immediate_o before_o my_o text_n whosoever_o say_v he_o shall_v break_v one_o of_o these_o least_o commandment_n and_o shall_v teach_v man_n so_o he_o shall_v be_v call_v the_o least_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o compass_n they_o thereupon_o conclude_v that_o they_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v and_o perform_v it_o to_o a_o title_n without_o any_o supernatural_a grace_n and_o assistance_n from_o heaven_n and_o indeed_o if_o this_o construction_n of_o the_o law_n have_v be_v true_a it_o be_v possible_a that_o this_o conclusion_n which_o
in_o no_o case_n obtain_v a_o entrance_n into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n let_v we_o in_o the_o next_o place_n consider_v what_o manner_n of_o righteousness_n we_o must_v be_v which_o will_v bring_v we_o to_o those_o mansion_n of_o glory_n and_o 1._o it_o must_v not_o have_v any_o of_o these_o fault_n with_o which_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n be_v taint_v and_o render_v odious_a and_o abominable_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n their_o righteousness_n as_o you_o have_v hear_v be_v such_o as_o consist_v only_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o external_a action_n according_a to_o the_o literal_a sense_n of_o the_o law_n but_o we_o must_v proceed_v further_a even_o to_o the_o cleanse_n and_o purify_n our_o heart_n from_o all_o manner_n of_o evil_a thought_n bless_a be_v the_o pure_a in_o heart_n say_v our_o saviour_n for_o they_o shall_v see_v god_n they_o and_o they_o only_o shall_v enjoy_v that_o beatifical_a vision_n who_o heart_n be_v undefiled_a for_o it_o be_v that_o which_o god_n chief_o respect_v and_o so_o long_o as_o that_o be_v right_a and_o sincere_a as_o to_o the_o main_n though_o we_o do_v sometime_o through_o the_o frailty_n of_o our_o nature_n and_o the_o strength_n of_o some_o temptation_n that_o have_v overcome_v we_o fall_v into_o any_o sin_n yet_o we_o shall_v certain_o obtain_v pardon_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n upon_o our_o true_a repentance_n they_o think_v themselves_o well_o enough_o if_o they_o do_v no_o evil_a nay_o more_o than_o so_o if_o evil_a be_v do_v they_o by_o another_o person_n they_o think_v they_o may_v with_o a_o safe_a conscience_n revenge_v themselves_o but_o our_o master_n have_v command_v we_o not_o to_o resist_v evil_a but_o if_o any_o man_n smite_v we_o upon_o the_o right_a cheek_n to_o turn_v to_o he_o the_o other_o also_o and_o not_o only_o not_o to_o hurt_v our_o neighbour_n but_o to_o love_v our_o enemy_n to_o bless_v they_o that_o curse_v we_o to_o do_v good_a to_o they_o that_o hate_v we_o and_o to_o pray_v for_o they_o which_o despiteful_o use_v we_o and_o persecute_v we_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o we_o that_o our_o outward_a action_n be_v not_o evil_a but_o we_o must_v take_v heed_n to_o our_o word_n and_o our_o thought_n we_o must_v make_v a_o covenant_n with_o our_o eye_n keep_v our_o mouth_n with_o a_o bridle_n that_o we_o offend_v not_o in_o our_o tongue_n and_o bring_v into_o captivity_n every_o thought_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o christ_n for_o for_o every_o idle_a word_n and_o every_o misguide_a thought_n we_o shall_v give_v a_o account_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n 2._o our_o righteousness_n must_v not_o be_v such_o as_o make_v we_o presume_v that_o we_o can_v of_o ourselves_o and_o by_o our_o own_o strength_n keep_v all_o the_o commandment_n and_o fulfil_v the_o whole_a law_n alas_o we_o be_v not_o able_a of_o ourselves_o to_o keep_v any_o one_o commandment_n and_o s._n james_n tell_v we_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v any_o good_a work_n that_o we_o can_v of_o ourselves_o so_o much_o as_o think_v a_o good_a thought_n without_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o god_n inspire_v it_o into_o our_o heart_n who_o work_n in_o we_o both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v of_o his_o good_a pleasure_n that_o there_o be_v not_o a_o just_a man_n upon_o earth_n that_o do_v good_a and_o sin_n not_o but_o that_o in_o many_o thing_n we_o offend_v all_o and_o that_o if_o we_o say_v that_o we_o have_v no_o sin_n we_o deceive_v ourselves_o and_o the_o truth_n be_v not_o in_o we_o these_o and_o the_o like_a expression_n in_o scripture_n if_o we_o consider_v they_o be_v sufficient_a to_o satisfy_v we_o that_o we_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v the_o whole_a law_n that_o we_o can_v perform_v any_o one_o title_n of_o it_o as_o we_o ought_v and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o as_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n do_v place_v our_o righteousness_n in_o this_o that_o we_o be_v able_a and_o do_v perform_v a_o entire_a obedience_n to_o the_o law_n and_o if_o so_o much_o less_o must_v we_o in_o the_o three_o place_n as_o they_o do_v and_o the_o church_n to_o judge_v lest_o we_o be_v judge_v ourselves_o and_o to_o speak_v evil_a of_o no_o man_n especial_o not_o to_o despise_v dominion_n and_o speak_v evil_a of_o dignity_n except_o we_o have_v a_o ambition_n to_o be_v of_o the_o number_n of_o those_o mocker_n which_o s_n judas_n prophesy_v shall_v come_v in_o the_o last_o time_n who_o shall_v walk_v after_o their_o own_o ungodly_a lust_n that_o ever_o public_o disgrace_v christianity_n and_o god_n grant_v that_o there_o be_v not_o too_o many_o such_o pharisee_n among_o we_o still_o but_o i_o pass_v they_o by_o their_o name_n be_v odious_a and_o their_o religion_n scandalous_a last_o we_o must_v not_o as_o the_o pharisee_n do_v and_o we_o know_v who_o do_v still_o prefer_v unwritten_a tradition_n before_o the_o holy_a wanton_a glance_n be_v adultery_n when_o a_o revengeful_a thought_n be_v murder_n when_o usury_n or_o extortion_n at_o least_o be_v theft_n when_o not_o give_v to_o the_o poor_a be_v steal_v from_o the_o lord_n when_o a_o tattle_a tongue_n bear_v false_a witness_n and_o every_o idle_a word_n be_v to_o be_v account_v for_o at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n who_o then_o can_v pretend_v to_o innocence_n who_o then_o can_v say_v that_o he_o have_v make_v his_o heart_n clean_o and_o that_o he_o be_v pure_a from_o his_o sin_n no_o the_o best_a of_o man_n must_v then_o be_v force_v to_o boast_v of_o they_o even_o to_o god_n himself_o as_o you_o may_v see_v by_o the_o instance_n i_o but_o now_o mention_v of_o the_o pharisee_fw-mi that_o trust_v in_o his_o own_o righteousness_n and_o common_a swearer_n will_v exclaim_v sometime_o against_o profaneness_n and_o be_v ready_a to_o ask_v god_n pardon_v almost_o after_o every_o oath_n and_o swear_v again_o with_o the_o next_o breath_n the_o wanton_a if_o he_o light_v into_o severe_a and_o grave_a company_n will_v sometime_o pretend_v to_o abhor_v his_o darling_n sin_n and_o preach_v a_o lecture_n of_o chastity_n when_o perhaps_o their_o profession_n in_o all_o holy_a conversation_n and_o godliness_n be_v general_o hate_v and_o scorn_v and_o look_v upon_o with_o a_o evil_a eye_n and_o suffer_v more_o sorrow_n and_o affliction_n in_o the_o world_n than_o other_o men._n and_o now_o i_o have_v give_v you_o a_o account_n of_o all_o those_o dangerous_a enemy_n and_o those_o manifold_a and_o great_a difficulty_n and_o jesus_n the_o author_n and_o finisher_n of_o our_o faith_n who_o for_o the_o joy_n that_o be_v set_v before_o he_o endure_v the_o cross_n despise_v the_o shame_n and_o be_v set_v down_o at_o the_o right-hand_a of_o the_o throne_n of_o god_n let_v we_o consider_v he_o that_o endure_v such_o contradiction_n of_o sinner_n against_o
