of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o attribute_n without_o transform_v the_o divine_a nature_n into_o the_o similitude_n of_o our_o corrupt_a affection_n be_v to_o see_v his_o righteousness_n and_o justice_n without_o derogation_n from_o his_o mercy_n or_o goodness_n or_o to_o see_v he_o to_o be_v goodness_n itself_o and_o mercy_n itself_o without_o any_o diminution_n of_o his_o justice_n to_o see_v his_o life_n be_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d for_o christ_n sake_n or_o for_o his_o merit_n which_o may_v denote_v only_o the_o efficient_a cause_n but_o that_o it_o be_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d in_o or_o through_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n this_o import_v not_o the_o efficient_a only_o but_o the_o immediate_a and_o next_o cause_n of_o this_o gift_n of_o god_n it_o exclude_v the_o interposition_n or_o intervention_n of_o any_o causality_n whatsoever_o beside_o christ_n and_o thus_o much_o here_o of_o the_o state_n or_o issue_n of_o the_o controversy_n betwixt_o we_o and_o the_o romish_a church_n concern_v merit_n the_o appendix_n or_o second_o branch_n whereof_o according_a to_o the_o order_n propose_v in_o the_o twenty_o seven_o chapter_n section_n 1_o be_v the_o state_n of_o this_o very_a question_n betwixt_o god_n the_o righteous_a judge_n of_o all_o and_o our_o own_o soul_n or_o conscience_n or_o if_o you_o will_v betwixt_o our_o conscience_n and_o we_o and_o this_o be_v right_o state_v will_v put_v into_o our_o mouth_n that_o true_a confession_n which_o every_o christian_a soul_n must_v make_v so_o often_o handle_v in_o the_o very_a entrance_n or_o begin_n of_o the_o ten_o book_n certain_a it_o be_v that_o it_o be_v a_o grace_n and_o either_o a_o part_n of_o man_n be_v or_o of_o our_o nature_n as_o it_o be_v the_o workmanship_n of_o god_n or_o a_o grace_n confer_v upon_o our_o nature_n with_o its_o first_o be_v and_o a_o grace_n which_o can_v no_o way_n be_v merit_v either_o de_fw-fr condigno_fw-la continue_v in_o this_o first_o estate_n this_o have_v be_v but_o a_o continuance_n of_o that_o free_a gift_n of_o god_n which_o be_v bestow_v upon_o he_o with_o his_o beginning_n if_o he_o have_v be_v advance_v or_o translate_v to_o a_o better_a or_o more_o perfect_a estate_n this_o likewise_o have_v be_v a_o new_a free_a gift_n or_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o can_v not_o be_v merit_v by_o man_n for_o his_o very_a first_o estate_n be_v more_o worth_a than_o all_o the_o labour_n and_o endeavour_n which_o god_n require_v at_o his_o hand_n for_o the_o preserve_n of_o it_o so_o that_o he_o be_v still_o indebt_v unto_o god_n as_o well_o for_o every_o moment_n or_o hour_n of_o life_n in_o such_o a_o happy_a estate_n as_o he_o be_v for_o his_o first_o creation_n and_o if_o he_o have_v be_v advance_v to_o any_o better_a estate_n this_o have_v make_v he_o a_o new_a debtor_n unto_o his_o maker_n it_o have_v be_v more_o than_o a_o continuance_n of_o the_o former_a debt_n the_o utmost_a issue_n or_o best_a effect_n of_o all_o his_o endeavour_n can_v only_o have_v make_v he_o capable_a or_o not_o unworthy_a of_o the_o continuance_n of_o god_n favour_n and_o grace_n which_o he_o most_o free_o extend_v to_o all_o that_o do_v not_o make_v themselves_o unworthy_a of_o they_o that_o the_o first_o man_n than_o be_v endow_v with_o grace_n this_o be_v god_n sole_a work_n that_o he_o make_v himself_o unworthy_a of_o this_o first_o grace_n and_o so_o lose_v it_o this_o be_v his_o own_o work_n yet_o after_o he_o have_v make_v himself_o and_o his_o posterity_n thus_o unworthy_a of_o the_o first_o grace_n god_n bestow_v a_o second_o upon_o he_o the_o grace_n of_o redemption_n and_o this_o grace_n can_v not_o be_v merit_v by_o he_o it_o be_v a_o more_o free_a gift_n of_o god_n than_o his_o first_o creation_n be_v that_o be_v a_o act_n or_o gift_n of_o his_o bounty_n this_o late_a be_v a_o act_n of_o his_o abundant_a mercy_n bounty_n extend_v itself_o to_o such_o as_o be_v not_o worthy_a of_o it_o but_o mercy_n reach_v to_o such_o as_o be_v most_o unworthy_a of_o bounty_n to_o such_o as_o deserve_v the_o severity_n of_o punitive_a justice_n what_o shall_v we_o say_v then_o that_o the_o second_o grace_n which_o be_v promise_v to_o mankind_n in_o the_o woman_n seed_n though_o it_o can_v be_v merit_v by_o any_o yet_o be_v free_o and_o actual_o bestow_v upon_o they_o may_v merit_v the_o continuance_n of_o it_o the_o increase_n of_o it_o or_o advancement_n to_o a_o better_a estate_n 8._o to_o be_v free_v from_o the_o sentence_n of_o death_n which_o be_v denounce_v against_o our_o first_o parent_n be_v a_o extraordinary_a grace_n or_o blessing_n of_o god_n and_o this_o blessing_n we_o all_o receive_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o baptism_n and_o this_o blessing_n we_o all_o enjoy_v so_o long_o as_o we_o continue_v in_o grace_n and_o the_o long_o we_o enjoy_v this_o grace_n or_o blessing_n the_o more_o still_o we_o be_v indebt_v to_o our_o gracious_a god_n than_o they_o be_v which_o never_o receive_v it_o which_o want_v it_o now_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o we_o shall_v merit_v any_o thing_n at_o god_n hand_n by_o the_o long_a enjoyment_n of_o that_o blessing_n which_o the_o long_o or_o in_o great_a measure_n we_o enjoy_v the_o more_o still_o we_o be_v indebt_v unto_o he_o that_o give_v it_o to_o what_o use_n or_o end_v then_o do_v this_o grace_n serve_v only_o to_o make_v we_o more_o indebt_v to_o god_n than_o we_o be_v for_o our_o natural_a be_v nay_o but_o to_o make_v we_o see_v the_o misery_n of_o our_o first_o estate_n better_o than_o we_o can_v possible_o see_v it_o whilst_o we_o continue_v in_o it_o and_o ☞_o to_o enable_v we_o to_o make_v a_o better_a and_o more_o thankful_a acknowledgement_n of_o our_o debt_n to_o god_n for_o all_o his_o blessing_n then_o without_o this_o grace_n or_o this_o blessing_n of_o redemption_n we_o possible_o can_v do_v let_v the_o advocate_n then_o of_o the_o romish_a church_n extol_v the_o excellency_n of_o grace_n unto_o the_o sky_n or_o heaven_n whence_o it_o descend_v we_o will_v not_o in_o this_o contradict_v they_o but_o only_o request_v they_o to_o consider_v that_o the_o more_o excellent_a grace_n in_o itself_o be_v the_o great_a shall_v their_o condemnation_n be_v that_o make_v no_o better_a use_n of_o it_o then_o they_o do_v if_o god_n shall_v enter_v into_o judgement_n with_o they_o and_o certain_o that_o man_n have_v receive_v but_o a_o mean_a portion_n or_o talon_n of_o grace_n which_o see_v not_o his_o account_n to_o god_n to_o be_v much_o increase_v if_o god_n shall_v call_v he_o to_o a_o strict_a account_n for_o not_o employ_v his_o talon_n or_o not_o stir_v up_o that_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o be_v in_o he_o 9_o but_o suppose_v we_o do_v stir_v up_o this_o grace_n or_o suffer_v ourselves_o to_o be_v stir_v up_o by_o it_o to_o good_a work_n to_o what_o use_n or_o end_n do_v our_o fruitfulness_n in_o good_a work_n serve_v to_o this_o end_n only_o that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v find_v unworthy_a either_o of_o the_o continuance_n of_o god_n gracious_a favour_n or_o of_o the_o continual_a increase_n of_o it_o to_o acknowledge_v the_o first_o receipt_n of_o grace_n to_o be_v the_o sole_a work_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o to_o ascribe_v in_o part_n the_o increase_n of_o it_o to_o our_o own_o merit_n or_o right_a use_n of_o it_o be_v no_o
