II. 1 17 Solomons labourers for the building of the temple 3 His embassage to Huram for workmen and provision of stuff 11 Huram sendeth him a kinde answer ANd Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the LORD and an house for his kingdom 2 And Solomon told out threescore and ten thousand men to bear burdens and fourscore thousand to hew in the mountain and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them 3 ¶ And Solomon sent to ‖ Or Hiram 1 Kin. 5.1 Huram the king of Tyre saying As thou didst deal with David my father and didst send him cedars to build him an house to dwell therein even so deal with me 4 Behold I build an house to the name of the LORD my God to dedicate it to him and to burn before him † Heb. inc●use of spices sweet incense and for the continual shew-bread and for the burnt-offerings morning and evening on the sabbaths and on the new moons and on the solemn feasts of the LORD our God This is an ordinance for ever to Israel 5 And the house which I build is great for great is our God above all gods 6 * 1 King 8.27 Chap. 6.18 But who † Heb. hath retained or obtained strength is able to build him an house seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him who am I then that I should build him an house save onely to burn sacrifice before him 7 Send me now therefore a man cunning to work in gold and in silver and in brass and in iron and in purple and crimson and blue and that can skill † Heb. to grave gravings to grave with the cunning men that are with me in Judah and in Jerusalem whom David my father did provide 8 Send me also cedar-trees fir-trees and ‖ Or almuggim 1 Kings 10.11 algum-trees out of Lebanon for I know that thy servants can skill to out timber in Lebanon and behold my servants shall be with thy servants 9 Even to prepare me timber in abundance for the house which I am about to build shall be † Heb. great and wonderful wonderful great 10 And behold I will give to thy servants the hewers that cut timber twenty thousand measures of beaten wheat and twenty thousand measures of barley and twenty thousand baths of wine and twenty thousand baths o●oyl 11 ¶ Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing which he sent to Solomon Because the LORD hath loved his people he hath made thee king over them 12 Huram said moreover Blessed be the LORD-God of Israel that made heaven and earth who hath given to David the king a wise son † Heb knowing prudence and understanding e●dued with prudence and understanding that might build an house for the LORD and an house for his kingdom 13 And now I have sent a cunning man endued with understanding of Huram my fathers 14 The son of a woman of the daughters of Dan and his father was a man of Tyre skilful to work in gold and in silver in brass in iron in stone and in timber in purple in blue and in fine linen and in crimson also to grave any manner of graving and to finde out every device which shall be put to him with thy cunning men and with the cunning men of my lord David thy father 15 Now therefore the wheat and the barley the oyl and the wine which my lord hath spoken of let him send unto his servants 16 And we will cut wood out of Lebanon † Heb. according to all thy need as much as thou shalt need and we will bring it to thee in flotes by sea to † Heb. XX. 1 Jehoshaphat in his fear proclaimeth a fast 5 His prayer 14 The prophesie of Jahaziel 20 Jehoshaphat exhorteth the people and setteth singers to praise the Lord. 22 The great overthrow of the enemies 26 The people having blessed God at Berachah return in triumph 31 Jehoshaphats reign 35 His convoy of ships which he made with Ahaziah according to the prophesie of Eliezer unhappily perished IT came to pass after this also that the children of Moab and the children of Ammon and with them other beside the Ammonites came against Jehoshaphat to battel 2 Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat saying There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria and behold they be in Hazazon-tamar which is En-gedi 3 And Jehoshaphat feared and set † Heb. ●●ja●● himself to seek the LORD and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah 4 And Judah gathered themselves together to ask help of the LORD even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD 5 ¶ And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem in the house of the LORD before the new court 6 And said O LORD God of our fathers art not thou God in heaven and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen and in thine hand is there not power and might so that none is able to withstand thee 7 Art not thou our God † Heb. t●● who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever 8 And they dwelt therein and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name saying 9 * 1 Kin. 8.17 C●ap 6.28 If when evil cometh upon us as the sword judgement or pestilence or famine we stand before this house and in thy presence for thy name is in this house and cry unto thee in our affliction then thou wilt hear and help 10 And now behold the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir whom thou * Deu. 2.9 wouldest not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt but they turned from them destroyed them not 11 Behold I say how they reward us to come to cast us out of thy possession which thou hast given us to inherit 12 O our God wilt thou not judge them for we have no might against this great company that conieth against us neither know we what to do but our eyes are upon thee 13 And all Judah stood before the LORD with their little ones their wives and their children 14 ¶ Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah the son of Benaiah the son of Jeiel the son of Mattaniah a Levite of the sons of Asaph came the spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation 15 And he said Hearken ye all Judah and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem and thou king Jehoshaphat Thus saith the LORD unto you Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude for the battel is not yours but Gods 16 To morrow go ye down against them behold they come up by the † Heb. ●s●ent cliff of Ziz and ye shall finde them at the end of the ‖ Or ●li● brook before the wilderness of Jeruel 17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battel set your selves stand ye still and see the salvation of the LORD with you O Judah and Jerusalem fear not nor be dismayed to morrow go out against them for the LORD will be with you 18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD worshipping the LORD 19 And the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korhites stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high 20 ¶ And they rose early in the morning and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa and as they went forth Jehoshaphat stood and said Hear me O Judah and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem * Isa 7.9 Beleeve in the LORD your God so shall you be established beleeve his prophets so shall ye prosper 21 And when he had consulted with the people he appointed singers unto the LORD and † Heb. praisers that should praise the beauty of holiness as they went out before the army and to say Praise the LORD for his mercy endureth for ever 22 ¶ † Heb. and in the time that they c. And when they began † Heb. in singing and praise to sing and to praise the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon Moab and mount Seir which were come against Judah and ‖ Or they smote one another they were smitten 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir utterly to slay and destroy them and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir every one helped † Heb. for the destruction to destroy another 24 And when Judah came toward the watch-tower in the wilderness they looked unto the multitude and behold they were dead bodies fain to the earth and † Heb. there was not an escaping none escaped 25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies and precious jewels which they stript off for themselves more then they could carry away and they were three days in gathering of the spoil it was so much 26 ¶ And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of ‖ That is blessing Berachah for there they blessed the LORD therefore the name of the same place was called the valley of Berachah unto this day 27 Then they returned every man of Judah and Jerusalem and Jehoshaphat in the † Heb. bead forefront of them to go again to Jerusalem with joy for the LORD had made them to rejoyce over their enemies 28 And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD 29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countreys when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel 30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet for his God gave him rest round about 31 ¶ * 1 Kin. 22 41 c. And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem his mothers name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi 32 And he walked in the way of Asa his father and departed not from it doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD 33 Howbeit the high places were not taken away
Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign and he reigned three moneths in Jerusalem 3 And the king of Egypt † Heb. removed him put him down at Jerusalem and † Heb. mu●cted condemned the land in an hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold 4 And the king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem and turned his name to Jehoiakim And Necho took Jehoahaz his brother and carried him to Egypt 5 ¶ Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God 6 Against him came up Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and bound him in ‖ Or chains fetters to carry him to Babylon 7 * 2 Kin. 24.13 Dan. 1.1 2. CIII 1 An exhortation to bless God for his mercy 15 and for the constancy thereof ¶ A psalm of David BLess the LORD O my soul and all that is within me bless his holy name 2 Bless the LORD O my soul and forget not all his benefits 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities who healeth all thy diseases 4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies 5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things so that thy youth is renewed like the eagles 6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgement for all that are oppressed 7 He made known his ways unto Moses his acts unto the children of Israel 8 * Exod 34.6 7. Num. 14.18 Deut. 5.10 Neh. 9.17 Psal 86.15 Jer. 32.18 The LORD is merciful and gracious slow to anger and † Heb. great of mercy plenteous in mercy 9 He will not always chide neither will he keep his anger for ever 10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins nor rewarded us according to our iniquities 11 For † Heb. according to the height of the heaven as the heaven is high above the earth so great is his mercy toward them that fear him 12 As far as the east is from the west so far hath he removed our transgressions from us 13 Like as a father pitieth his children so the LORD pitieth them that fear him 14 For he knoweth our frame he remembreth that we are dust 15 As for man his days are as grass as a flower of the field so he flourisheth 16 For the wind passeth over it and † Heb. it is not it is gone and the place thereof shall know it no more 17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him his righteousness unto childrens children 18 * Deut. 7.9 To such as keep his covenant and to those that remember his commandments to do them 19 The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens and his kingdom ruleth over all 20 Bless the LORD ye his angels † Heb. mighty in strength that excel in strength that do his commandments hearkning unto the voice of his word 21 Bless ye the LORD all ye his hosts ye ministers of his that do his pleasure 22 Bless the LORD all his works in all places of his dominion bless the LORD O my soul PSAL. CIV 1 A meditation upon the mighty power 7 and wonderful providence of God 31 Gods glory is eternal 33 The prophet voweth perpetually to praise God BLess the LORD O my soul O LORD my God thou art very great thou art clothed with honour and majesty 2 Who coverest thy self with light as with a garment who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain 3 Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters who maketh the clouds his chariot who walketh upon the wings of the wind 4 * Hebr. 1.7 Who maketh his angels spirits his ministers a flaming fire 5 † Heb. he hath founded the earth upon her bases Who laid the foundations of the earth that it should not be removed for ever 6 Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment the waters stood above the mountains 7 At thy rebuke they fled at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away 8 ‖ Or the mountains ascend the valleys descend They go up by the mountains they go down by the valleys unto the place which thou hast founded for them 9 Thou hast set a bound
like dragons their eyes did fail because there was no grass 7 ¶ O LORD though our iniquities testifie against us do thou it for thy names sake for our backslidings are many we have sinned against thee 8 O the hope of Israel the saviour thereof in time of trouble why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land and as a way-faring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night 9 Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied as a mighty man that cannot save † Heb ta● name 〈◊〉 upon 〈◊〉 yet thou O LORD art in the midst of us and ‖ 〈…〉 we are called by thy name leave us not 10 ¶ Thus saith the LORD unto this people Thus have they loved to wander they have not refrained their feet therefore the LORD doth not accept them he will now remember their iniquity and visit their sir● 11 Then sa●d the LORD unto me * 〈…〉 Pray not for this people for their good 12 * Pr 1 2● Isa 1.15 Ch. 11.11 Ezek. 8 1● Mic. 3.4 When they fast I will not hear their cry and when they offer burnt-offering and an oblation I will not accept them but I will consume them by the sword and by the famine and by the pestilence 13 ¶ Then said I Ah Lord GOD behold the prophets say unto them Ye shall not see the sword neither shall ye have famine but I will give you † Heb. peace of truth assured peace in this place 14 Then the LORD said unto me The prophets prophesie lies in my name * Ch. 22.21 and 27.15 and 29.8 9. I sent them not neither have I commanded them neither spake unto them they prophesie unto you a false vision and divination and a thing of nought and the deceit of their heart 15 Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesie in my name and I sent them not yet they say Sword and famine shall not be in this land By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed 16 And the people to whom they prophesie shall be cast out in the stree●s of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword and they shall have none to bury them them their wives nor their sons nor their daughters for I will pour their wickedness upon them 17 ¶ Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them * Ch. 13.17 La. 1.16 and 2.18 Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day and let them not cease for the virgin-daughter of my people is broken with a great breach with a very grievous blow 18 If I go forth into the field then behold the slain with the sword and it I enter into the city then behold them that are sick with famine yea both the prophet and the priest ‖ Or make mer●bandise against a land and men acknowledge it not Ch. 5.31 go about into a land that they know not 19. XV. 1 The utter rejection and manifold judgements of the Jews 10 Jeremiah complaining of their spite receiveth a promise for himself 12 a threatning for them 15 He prayeth 19 and receiveth a gracious promise THen said the LORD unto me * Ezek. 11.14 Though * Ex. 32.11 14. Ch. 20.14 Wo is me my mother that thou hast born me a man of strise a man of contention to the whole earth I have neither lent on usury nor men have lent to me on usury yet every one of them doth curse me 11 The LORD said Verily it shall be well with thy remnant verily ‖ Or I will intreat the enemy for thee I will cause the enemy to entreat thee well in the time of evil and in the time of affliction 12 Shall iron break the northern iron and the steel 13 Thy substance and thy treasures will I give to the * Ch. 1● 3 spoil without price and that for all thy sins even in all thy borders 14 And I will
in Daniel before the king in haste and said thus unto him † Cald. 〈…〉 ●ave ●ound I have found a man of the † Cald. children of clecaptivity of ●udah captives of Judah that will make known unto the king the interpretation 26 The king answered and said to Daniel whose name was Belteshazzar Art thou able to make known unto me the dream which I have seen and the interpretation thereof 27 Daniel answered in the presence of the king and said The secret which the king hath demanded cannot the wis men the astrologers the magicians the soothsayers shew unto the king 28 But there is a God in heaven that revealeth secrets and † Cald. ●ath made known maketh known to the king Nebuchadnezzar what shall be in the latter days Thy dream and the visions of thy head upon thy bed are these 29 As for thee O king thy thoughts † Cald. came up came into thy mindes upon thy bed what should come to pass hereafter and he that revealeth secrets maketh known unto thee what shall come to pass 30 But as for me this secret is not revealed to me for any wisdom that I have more then any living but for their sakes that shall make known the interpretation to the king and that thou mightest know the thoughts of thy heart 31 ¶ Thou O king † Cald. wast s●ting sawest and behold a great image this great image whose brightness was excellent stood before thee and the form thereof was terrible 32 This images head was of fine gold his breast and his arms of silver his belly and his ‖ Or sides thighs of brass 33 His legs of iron his feet part of iron and part of clay 34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out ‖ Or which was not in bands as ver 45. without hands which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay and brake them to pieces 35 Then was the iron the clay the brass the silver and the gold broken to pieces together and became like the chaff of the summer-threshing-floors and the wind carried them away that no place was found for them and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth 36 ¶ This is the dream and we will tell the interpretation thereof before the king 37 Thou O king art a king of kings for the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom power and strength and glory 38 And wheresoever the children of men dwell the beasts of the field and the fowls of the heaven hath he given into thine hand and hath made thee ruler over them all thou art this head of gold 39 And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferiour to thee and another third kingdom of brass which shall bear rule over all the earth 40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things and as iron that breaketh all these shall it break in pieces and bruise 41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes part of potters clay and part of iron the kingdom shall be divided but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay 42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron and part of clay so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly ‖ Or brie●● broken 43 And whereas thou sawest iron mix● with miry clay they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men but they shall not cleave † Cald. 〈◊〉 with this one to another even as iron is not mixed with clay 44 And in † Cald. their days the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom * Ch. 4. ● ●4 6.26 7.14 27. Mic 4.7 Lu. 1.33 which shall never be destroyed and the † Cald. kingdom thereof kingdom shall not be left to other people but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdom and it shall stand for ever 45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain ‖ Or which was not in band without hands and that it brake in pieces the iron the brass the clay the silver and the gold the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass † Cald. ●fter this hereafter and the dream is certain and the interpretation thereof sure 46 ¶ Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face and worshipped Daniel and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odours unto him 47 The king answered unto Daniel and said Of a truth it is that your God is a God of gods and a Lord of kings and a revealer of secrets seeing thou couldest reveal this secret 48 Then the king made Daniel a great man and gave him many great gifts and made him ruler over the whose province of Babylon and * Ch. ● 9 chief of the governours over all the wise men of Babylon 49 Then Daniel requested of the king and he set Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego over the affairs of the province of Babylon but Daniel sat in the gate of the king CHAP. III. 1 Nebuchadnezzar dedicateth a god ●en image in Dura 8 S●adra●h Mes●ach and Abed-nego are accused for 〈◊〉 ●●rshipping the image 13 They being threatned make a good cons●s●on 19 God deliversseth them out of the furnace 2. Nebuchadnezzar s●me the miracle blesseth God NEbuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold whose height was threescore cubits and the breadth thereof six cubits he set it up in the plain of Dura in the province of Babylon 2 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes the governours and the captains the judges the treasurers the counsellours the sheriffs and all the rulers of the provinces to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up 3 Then the princes the governours and captains the judges the treasurers the counsellours the sheriffs and all the rulers of the provinces were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up 4 Then an herauld cried † Cald. with mi●●● aloud To you † Cald. they command it is commanded O people nations and languages 5 That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet flute harp sackbut psaltery ‖ Or sining † Cald. symp●o●● dulcimer and all kinds of musick ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up 6 And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace 7 Therefore at that time when all the people heard the sound of the cornet flute harp sackbut psaltery and all kinds of musick all the people the nations and the languages fell down and worshipped the golden
of the field had shadow under it and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof and all flesh was f●d of it 13 I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed and behold a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven 14 He cried † Cald. with might aloud and faid thus How down the tree and cut off his branches shake off his leaves and scatter his fruit let the beasts get away from under it and the fowls from his branches 15 Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth even with a band of iron and brass in the tender grass of the field and let it be wet with the dew of heaven and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth 16 Let his heart be changed from mans and let a beasts heart be given unto him and let seven times pass over him 17 This matter is by the decree of the watchers and the demand by the word of the holy ones to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men and giveth it to whomsoever he will and setteth up over it the basest of men 18 This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen now thou O Belteshazzar declare the interpretation thereof forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation but thou art able for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee 19 ¶ Then Daniel whose name was Belteshazzar was astonied for one hour and his thoughts troubled him the king spake and said Belteshazzar let not the dream or the interpretation thereof trouble thee Belteshazzar answered and said My lord the dream be to them that hate thee and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies 20 The tree that thou sawest which grew was strong whose height reached unto the heaven and the ●ight thereof to all the earth 21 Whose leaves were fair and the fruit thereof much and in it was meat for all under which the beasts of the field dwelt and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation 22 It is thou O king that art grown and become strong for thy greatness is grown and reacheth unto heaven and thy dominion to the end of the earth 23 And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven and saying Hew the tree down and destroy it yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth even with a band of iron and brass in the tender grass of the field and let it be wet with the dew of heaven and let his portion be with the beasts of the field till seven times pass over him 24 This is the interpretation O king and this is the decree of the most High which is come upon my lord the king 25 That they shall * Ch. 5.21 c. drive thee from men and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen and they shall wet thee with the dew of heaven and seven times shall pass over thee till thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men and giveth it to whomsoever he will 26 And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the tree-roots thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule 27 Wherefore O king let my counsel be acceptable unto thee and break off thy sins by righteousness and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor if it may be ‖ Or an bea●ing of thineerro●● a lengthning of thy tranquillity 28 ¶ All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar 29 At the end of twelve moneths he walked ‖ Or upon in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon 30 The king spake and said Is not this great Babylon that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power and for the honour of my majesty 31 While the word was in the kings mouth there fell a voice from heaven saying O king Nebuchadnezzar to thee it is spoken The kingdom is departed from thee 32 And they shall drive thee from men and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen and seven times shall pass over thee until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men and giveth it to whomsoever he will 33 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar and he was driven from men and did eat grass as oxen and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hairs were grown like eagles feathers and his nails like birds claws 34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lift up mine eyes unto heaven and mine understanding returned unto me and I blessed the most High and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever whose dominion is * Ch. 7.14 Mic. 4.7 Lu. 1.33 an everlasting dominion and his kingdom is from generation to generation 35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth and none can stay his hand or say unto him * Job 9.12 If. 45.9 What doest thou 36 At the same time my reason returned unto me and for the glory of my kingdom mine honour and brightness returned unto me and my counsellours and my lords sought unto me and I was established in my kingdom and excellent majesty was added unto me 37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven all whose works are truth and his ways judgement and those that walk in pride he is able to abase CHAP. V. 1 Belshazzars impious ●east 5 A ●and-writing unknown to the magicians troubleth the king 10 At the commendation of the queen Daniel is brought 17 He reproving the king of pride and idolatry 25 readeth and interpreteth the writing 30 The monarchy is translated to the Medes BElshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords and drank wine before the thousand 2 Belshazzar whiles he tasted the wine commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had † Cald. brought forth taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem that the king and his princes his wives and his concubines might drink therein 3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem and the king and his princes his wives and his concubines drank in them 4 They drunk wine and praised the gods of gold and of silver of brass of iron of wood and of stone 5 ¶ In the same hour came forth fingers of a mans hand and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the kings palace and the king saw the
part of the hand that wrote 6 Then the kings † Cald. brightness●● countenance † Cald. changed i● was changed and his thoughts troubled him so that the ‖ Or girdles † Cald. bindings o● knots joynts of his loyns were loosed and his knees smote one against another 7 The king cried † Cald. with might aloud to bring in the astrologers the Caldeans and the soothsayers and the king spake and said to the wise men of Babylon Whosoever shall read this writing and shew me the interpretation thereof shall be clothed with ‖ Or purp●● scarlet and have a chain of gold about his neck and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom 8 Then came in all the kings wise men but they could not read the writing nor make known to the king the interpretation thereof 9 Then was king Belshazzar greatly troubled and his † Cald. brightnesses countenance was changed in him and his lords were astonied 10 ¶ Now the queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into the banquet-house and the queen spake and said O king live for ever let not thy thoughts trouble thee nor let thy countenance be changed 11 * Ch. 2.48 There is a man in thy kingdom in whom is the spirit of the holy gods and in the days of thy ‖ Or grandfather father light and understanding and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods was found in him whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy ‖ Or grandfather father the king I say thy father made * Ch. 4.9 master of the magicians astrologers Caldeans and soothsayers 12 Forasmuch as an excellent spirit and knowledge and understanding ‖ Or of an interpreter c. interpreting of dreams and shewing of hard sentences and ‖ Or of a dissolver dissolving of † Cald. knots doubts were found in the same Daniel whom the king named Belteshazzar now let Daniel be called and he will shew the interpretation 13 Then was Daniel brought in before the king and the king spake and said unto Daniel Art thou that Daniel which art of the children of the captivity of Judah whom the king my ‖ Or grandfather father brought out of Jewry 14 I have even heard of thee that the spirit of the gods is in thee and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee 15 And now the wise men the astrologers have been brought in before me that they should read this writing and make known unto me the interpretation thereof but they could not shew the interpretation of the thing 16 And I have heard of thee that thou canst † Cald. interpret make interpretations and dissolve doubts now if thou canst read the writing and make known to me the interpretation thereof thou shalt be clothed with scarlet and have a chain of gold about thy neck and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom 17 ¶ Then Daniel answered and said before the king Let thy gifts be to thy self and give thy ‖ Or fe● as Ch. 2.6 rewards to another yet I will read the writing unto the king and make known to him the interpretation 18 O thou king the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom and majesty and glory and honour 19 And for the majesty that he gave him all people nations and languages trembled and feared before him whom he would be slew and whom he would he kept alive and whom he would he set up and whom he would he put down ‖ Or to dead proudly 20 But when his heart was lifted up and his minde hardned in pride he was † Cald. made to come down deposed from his kingly throne and they took his glory from him 21 And he was * Ch. 4.22 driven from the sons of men and ‖ Or he made his heart equal c. his heart was made like the beasts and his dwelling was with the wilde asses they fed him with grass like oxen and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men and that he appointeth over it whomsoever he will 22 And thou his son O Belshazzar hast not humbled thine heart though thou knewest all this 23 But hast lifted up thy self against the Lord of heaven and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee and thou and thy lords thy wives and thy concubines have drunk wine in them and thou hast praised the gods of silver and gold of brass iron wood and stone which see not nor hear nor know and the God in whose hand thy breath is and whose are all thy ways hast thou not glorified 24 Then was the part of the hand sent from him and this writing was written 25 ¶ And this is the writing that was written MENE MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN 26 This is the interpretation of the thing MENE God hath numbred thy kingdom and finished it 27 TEKEL thou art weighed in the balances and art found wanting 28 PERES thy kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians 29 Then commanded Belshazzar and they clothed Daniel with scarlet and put a chain of gold about his neck and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom 30 ¶ In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Caldeans slain 31 And Darius the Median took the kingdom † Cald. he as the son of c. being ‖ Or now about threescore and two year old CHAP. VI. 1 Daniel is made chief of the presidents 4 They couspiring against him obtain an idolatrous decree 10 Daniel accused of the breach thereof is cast into the lions den 18 Daniel is saved 24 his adversaries devoured 25 and God magnified by a decree IT pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes which should be over the whole kingdom 2 And over these three presidents of whom Daniel was first that the princes might give accounts unto them and the king should have no damage 3 Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes because an excellent spirit was in him and the king thought to set him over the whole realm 4 ¶ Then the presidents and princes sought to finde occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom but they could finde none occasion nor fault forasmuch as he was faithful neither was there any errour or fault found in him 5 Then said these men We shall not finde any occasion against this Daniel except we finde it against him concerning the law of his God 6 Then these presidents and princes † Or came ●●mult●●ously assembled together to the king and said thus unto him King Darius live for ever 7 All the presidents of the kingdom the governours and the princes the counsellours and the captains have consulted together to establish a royal statute and to make a firm ‖
† Cald. a prolonging in life was given them their lives were prolonged for a season and time 13 I saw in the night-visions and behold one like the son of man came with the clouds of heaven and came to the Ancient of days and they brought him near before him 14 And there was given him dominion and glory and a kingdom that all people nations and languages should serve him his dominion is * Ch. 2.44 Mic. 4.7 Luk. 1.33 an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed 15 ¶ I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my † Cald. sheath body and the visions of my head troubled me 16 I came near unto one of them that stood by and asked him the truth of all this so he told me and made me know the interpretation of the things 17 These great beasts which are four are four kings which shall arise out of the earth 18 But the saints of the † Cald. b●●●enes that is saints or places most High shall take the kingdom and possess the kingdom for ever even for ever and ever 19 Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast which was diverse † Cald. from all these from all the others exceeding dreadful whose teeth were of iron and his nails of brass which devoured brake in pieces and stamped the residue with his feet 20 And of the ten horns that were in his head and of the other which came up and before whom three fell even of that horn that had eyes and a mouth that spake very great things whose look was more stout then his fellows 21 I beheld and the same horn made war with the saints and prevailed against them 22 Until the Ancient of days came and judgement was given to the saints of the most High and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom 23 Thus he said The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth which shall be diverse from all kingdoms and shall devour the whole earth and shall tread it down and break it in pieces 24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise and another shall rise after them and he shall be diverse from the first and he shall subdue three kings 25 And he shall speak great words against the most High and shall wear out the saints of the most High and think to change times and laws and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time 26 But the judgement shall sit and they shall take away his dominion to consume and to destroy it unto the end 27 And the * Luk. 1.33 kingdom and dominion and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and all ‖ Or rulers dominions shall serve and obey him 28 Hitherto is the end of the matter As for me Daniel my cogitations much troubled me and my countenance changed in me but I kept the matter in my heart CHAP. VIII 1 Daniels vision of the ram and he-goat 13 The two thousand three hundred days of sacrifice 15 Gabriel comforteth Daniel and interpreteth the vision IN the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me even unto me Daniel after that which appeared unto me at the first 2 And I saw in a vision and it came to pass when I saw that I was at Shushan in the palace which is in the province of Elam and I saw in a vision and I was by the river of Ulai 3 Then I lifted up mine eyes and saw and behold there stood before the river a ram which had two horns and the two horns were high but one was higher then † Heb. the second the other and the higher came up last 4 I saw the ram pushing west-ward and north-ward and southward so that no beasts might stand before him neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand but he did according to his will and became great 5 And as I was considering behold an he-goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth and ‖ Or none touched him in the earth touched not the ground and the goat had † Heb. a horn of sight a notable horn between his eyes 6 And he came to the ram that had two horns which I had seen standing before the river and ran unto him in the fury of his power 7 And I saw him come close unto the ram and he was moved with choler against him and smote the ram and brake his two horns and there was no power in the ram to stand before him but he cast him down to the ground and stamped upon him and there was none that could deliver the ram out of his hand 8 Therefore the he-goat waxed very great and when he was strong the great horn was broken and for it came up four notable ones * Ch. 23.4 toward the four winds of heaven 9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn which waxed exceeding great toward the south and toward the east and toward the * Ps 48.2 Ezek. 20.2 Ezek. 20. ● pleasant land 10 And it waxed great even ‖ Or against the host to the host of heaven and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground and stamped upon them 11 Yea he magnified himself even ‖ Or against to the prince of the host and ‖ Or from him by him the daily sacrifice was taken away and the place of his sanctuary was cast down 12 And ‖ Or the host was given over for the transgression against the daily sacrifice an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression and it cast down the truth to the ground and it practised and prospered 13 ¶ Then I heard one saint speaking and another saint said unto ‖ The numberer of secrets or the wonderful numberer † Heb. X. 1 Daniel having humbled himself seeth a vision 1● Being troubled with fear he is comforted by the angel IN the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel whose name was called Belteshazzar and the thing was true but the time appointed was † Heb. grea● long and he understood the thing and had understanding of the vision 2 In those days I Daniel was mourning three † Heb. weeks of days full weeks 3 I ate no † Heb. ●●ead of ●esires pleasant bread neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth neither did I anoint my sell at all till chree whole weeks were fulfilled 4 And in the four and twenfieth day of the first moneth as I was by the side of the great river which is * G●n 2.14 Hiddekel 5 Then I lift up mine eyes and looked and behold † Heb. one man a certain man clothed in linen whose loyns were * Rev. 1.23 14 15. girded with fine gold of Uphaz 6 His body also was like the beryl and his face as the appearance of lightning and his eyes as lamps of fire and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude 7 And I Daniel alone saw the vision for the men that were with me saw not the vision but a great quaking fell upon them so that they fled to hide themselves 8 Therefore I was left alone and saw this great vision and there remained no strength in me for my ‖ Or vigour * Ch. 7.28 comeliness was turned in me into corruption and I retained no strength 9 Yet heard I the voice of his words and when I heard the voice of his words then was I in a deep sleep on my face and my face toward the ground 10 ¶ And behold an hand touched me which † Heb. moved set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands 11 And he said unto me O Daniel † Heb. a man of desires a man greatly beloved understand the words that I speak unto thee and † Heb. stand upon thy standing stand upright for unto thee am I now sent And when he had spoken this word unto me I stood trembling 12 Then said he unto me Fear not Daniel for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand and to chasten thy self before thy God thy words were heard and I am come for thy words 13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days but lo Michael ‖ Or the first one of the chief princes came to help me and I remained there with the kings of Persia 14 Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days for yet the vision is for many days 15 And when he had spoken such words unto me I set my face toward the ground and I became dumb 16 And behold one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips then I opened my mouth and spake and said unto him that stood before me O my lord by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me and I have retained no strength 17 For how can ‖ Or this servant of my lord the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord for as for me straightway there remained no strength in me neither is there breath left in me 18 Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man and he strengthned me 19 And said O man greatly beloved fear not peace be unto thee be strong yea be strong And when he had spoken unto me I was strengthned and said Let my lord speak for thou hast strengthned me 20 Then said he Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee and now will I return to sight with the prince of Persia and when I am gone forth lo the prince of Grecia shall come 21 But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth and there is none that † Heb. strengthneth himself holdeth with me in these things but Michael your prince CHAP. XI 1 The overthrow of Persia by the king of Grecia 5 Leagues and conflicts between the kings of the south and of the north 30 The invasion and tyranny of the Romans ALso I in the first year of Darius the Mede even I stood to confirm and to strengthen him 2 And now will I shew thee the truth Behold there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia and the fourth shall be far richer then they all and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia 3 And a mighty king shall stand up that shall rule with great dominion and do according to his will 4 And when he shall stand up his kingdom shall be broken and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven and not to his posterity nor according to his dominion which he ruled for his kingdom shall be pluckt up even for others besides those 5 ¶ And the king of the south shall be strong and one of his princes and he

VIII 1 Christ cleanseth the l●per 5 healeth the centurions servant 14 Peters mother in law 16 and many other diseased 18 s●●weth how ●e is to be followed 23 stilleth the tempest on the sea 28 driveth the devils out of two men possessed 31 and suffereth them to go into the swine WHen he was come down from the mountain great multitudes followed him 2 * Mar. 1.40 Luk. 5.12 And behold there came a leper and worshipped him saying Lord if thou wilt thou canst make me clean 3 And Jesus put forth his hand and touched him saying I will be thou clean And immediately his leprosie was cleansed 4 And Jesus saith unto him See thou tell no man but go thy way shew thy self to the priest and offer the gift that * Lev. 14.4 Moses commanded for a testimony unto them 5 ¶ * Luk. 7.1 And when Jesus was entred into Capernaum there came unto him a centurion beseeching him 6 And saying Lord my servant lieth at home sick of the palsie grievously tormented 7 And Jesus saith unto him I will come and heal him 8 The centurion answered and said Lord I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof but speak the word onely and my servant shall be healed 9 For I am a man under authority having souldiers under me and I say to this man Go and he goeth and to another Come and he cometh and to my servant Do this and he doeth it 10 When Jesus heard it he marvelled and said to them that followed Verily I say unto you I have not found so great faith no not in Israel 11 And I say unto you that many shall come from the east west and shall sit down with Abraham Isaac Jacob in the kingdom of heaven 12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth 13 And Jesus said unto the centurion Go thy way and as thou hast beleeved so be it done unto thee And his servant was healed in the self-same hour 14 ¶ * Mar. 1.29 Luke 4 3● And when Jesus was come into Peters house he saw his wives mother laid and sick of a fever 15 And he touched her hand and the fever left her and she arose and ministred unto them 16 ¶ * Mar. 1. ●1 Luk. 4.40 When the even was come they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils and he cast out the spirits with his word and healed all that were sick 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet saying * Isa 52.4 1 Pet. 2.24 Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses 18 Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him he gave commandment to depart unto the other side 19 * Luk. 9 5● And a certain scribe came and said unto him Master I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest 20 And Jesus saith unto him The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests but the son of man hath not where to lay his head 21 And another of his disciples said unto him Lord suffer me first to go and bury my father 22 But Jesus said unto him Follow me let the dead bury their dead 23 ¶ And when he was entred into a ship his disciples followed him 24 * Mar. 4.37 Luke 8.23 And behold there arose a great tempest in the sea insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves but he was asleep 25 And his disciples came to him and awoke him saying Lord save us we perish 26 And he saith unto them Why are ye fearful O ye of little faith Then he arose and rebuked the winds and the sea and
Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ he sent two of his disciples 3 And said unto him Art thou he that should come or do we look for another 4 Jesus answered and said unto them Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see 5 * 〈◊〉 35.6 The blinde receive their sight and the lame walk the lepers are cleansed and the deal hear the dead are raised up and * Isa 61.1 the poor have the gospel preached to them 6 And blessed is he whosoever shall not be offended in me 7 ¶ And as they departed Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John What went ye out into the wilderness to see A reed shaken with the wind 8 But what went ye out for to see A man clothed in soft raiment behold they that wear soft clothing are in kings houses 9 But what went ye out for to see A prophet yea I say unto you and more then a prophet 10 For this is he of whom it is written * Mal. 3. ● Behold I send my messenger before thy face which shall prepare thy way before thee 11 Verily I say unto you among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater then John the Baptist notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater then he 12 * Luke 16.16 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven ‖ Or is gotten by force and they that thrust men suffereth violence and the violent take it by force 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John 14 And if ye will receive it this is * Mal. 4.5 Elias which was for to come 15 He that hath ears to hear let him hear 16 ¶ * Luke 7.31 But whereunto shall I liken this generation It is like unto children sitting in the markets and calling unto their fellows 17 And saying We have piped unto you and ye have not danced we have mourned unto you and ye have not lamented 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking and they say He hath a devil 19 The Son of man came eating and drinking and they say Behold a man gluttonous and a wine-bibber a friend of publicans and sinners but wisdom is justified of her children 20 ¶ * Luke 10.13 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done because they repented not 21 Wo unto thee Chorazin wo unto thee Bethsaida for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes 22 But I say unto you It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgement then for you 23 And thou Capernaum which art exalted unto heaven shalt be brought down to hell for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in Sodom it would have remained until this day 24 But I say unto you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgement then for thee 25 ¶ * Luke 10.21 At that time Jesus answered and said I thank thee O Father Lord of heaven and earth because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent and hast revealed them unto babes 26 Even so Father for so it seemed good in thy fight 27 * Joh. 3.35 All things are delivered unto me of my Father and no man knoweth the Son but the Father * Joh. 6.46 neither knoweth any man the Father save the Son and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him 28 ¶ Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn of me for I am meek and lowly in heart * Jer. 6.16 and ye shall finde rest unto your souls 30 * 1 Joh. 5.3 For my yoke is easie and my burden is light CHAP. Lev. 8.31 and 24.9 but onely for the priests 5 Or have ye not read in the * Numb 28.9 law how that on the sabbath-days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath and are blameless 6 But I say unto you that in this place is one greater then the temple 7 But if ye had known what this meaneth * Hos 6.6 Chap. 9 1● I will have mercy and not sacrifice ye would not have condemned the guiltless 8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath-day 9 * Mar. ● 1 Luke 6.6 And when he was departed thence he went into the synagogue 10 ¶ And behold there was a man which had his hand withered and they asked him saying Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath-days that they might accuse him 11 And he said unto them What man shall there be among you that shall have one sheep and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath-day will he not lay hold on it and lift it out 12 How much then is a man better then a sheep wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath-days 13 Then saith he to the man Stretch forth thine hand he stretched it forth and it was restored whole like as the other 14 ¶ Then the Pharisees went out and ‖ Or took counsel held a counsel against him how they might destroy him 15 But when Jesus knew it he withdrew himself from thence and great multitudes followed him and he healed them all 16 And charged them that they should not make him known 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet saying 18 * Isa 42.1 Behold my servant whom I have chosen my beloved in whom my soul is well pleased I will put my spirit upon him and he shall shew judgement to the Gentiles 19 He shall not strive
they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and should understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them 16 But blessed are your eyes for they see and your ears for they hear 17 For verily I say unto you * Luke 10,24 that many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see and have not seen them and to hear those things which ye hear and have not heard them 18 ¶ Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower 19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom understandeth it not then cometh the wicked one and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart this is he which received seed by the way-side 20 But he that received the seed into stony places the same is he that heareth the word and anon with joy receiveth it 21 Yet hath he not root in himself but dureth for a while for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word by and by he is offended 22 He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word and the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word and he becometh unfruitful 23 But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word and understandeth it which also beareth fruit and bringeth forth some an hundred-fold some sixty some thirty 24 ¶ Another parable put he forth unto them saying The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field 25 But while men slept his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way 26 But when the blade was sprung up and brought forth fruit then appeared the tares also 27 So the servants of the housholder came and said unto him Sir didst not thou sowe good seed in thy field from whence then hath it tares 28 He said unto them An enemy hath done this The servant said unto him Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up 29 But he said Nay lest while ye gather up the tares ye root up also the wheat with them 30 Let both grow together until the harvest and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers Gather ye together first the tares and binde them in bundles to burn them but gather the wheat into my barn 31 ¶ Another parable put he forth unto them saying * Mark 4.30 Luke 13.19 The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard-seed which a man took and sowed in his field 32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds but when it is grown it is the greatest among herbs and becometh a tree so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof 33 ¶ * Luke 13.20 Another parable spake he unto them the kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven which a woman took and hid in three † The word in the Gr. is a measure containing about a peck and a half wanting little more then a pinte measures of meal till the whole was leavened 34 * Mark 4.33 All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables and without a parable spake he not unto them 35 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet saying * Psal 78.2 I will open my mouth in parables I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world 36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away and went into the house and his disciples came unto him saying Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field 37 He answered and said unto them He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man 38 The field is the world the good seed are the children of the kingdom but the tares are the children of the wicked one 39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil * Joel 3.13 Rev. 14.15 the harvest is the end of the world and the reapers are the angels 40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burnt in the fire so shall it be in the end of this world 41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels and they shall gather out of his kingdom all ‖ Or scandals things that offend and them which do iniquity 42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth 43 * Dan. 12 3. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father Who hath ears to hear let him hear 44 ¶ Again the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field the which when a man hath found he hideth and for joy thereof goeth and selleth all that he hath and buyeth that field 45 ¶ Again the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant-man seeking goodly pearls 46 Who when he had found one pearl of great price he went and sold all that he had and bought it 47 ¶ Again the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net that was cast into the sea and gathered of every kinde 48 Which when it was full they drew to shore and sat down and gathered the good into vessels but cast the bad away 49 So shall it be at the end of the world the angels shall come forth and sever the wicked from among the just 50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth 51 Jesus saith unto them Have ye understood all these things They say unto him Yea Lord. 52 Then said he unto them Therefore every scribe which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an housholder which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new old 53 ¶ And it came to pass that when Jesus had finished these parables he departed thence 54 * Mar. 6.1 Luk. 4.16 And when he was come into his own countrey he taught them in their synagogue insomuch that they were astonished and said Whence hath this man this wisdom and these mighty works 55 * Joh. 6.42 Is not this the carpenters son is not his mother called Mary and his brethren James and Joses and Simon and Judas 56 And his sisters are they not all with us whence then hath this man all there things 57 And they were offended in him But Jesus said unto them * Mar. 6.4 Luk. 4.24 Joh. 4.44 A prophet is not without honour save in his own countrey and in his own house 58 And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief CHAP. XVI 1 The Pharisees require a signe 6 Jesus warneth his disciples of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees 13 The peoples opinion of Christ 16 and Peters confession of him 21 Jesus foresheweth his death 23 reproving Peter for dis●wa●ing him from it 24 And admonisheth those that will follow him to bear the cross THe * Mar. 8.11 Luk. 12.54 Pharisees also with the Sadducees came and tempting desired him that he would shew them a signe from heaven 2 He answered and said unto them When it is evening ye say It will be fair weather for the skie is red 3 And in the morning It will be soul weather to day for the skie is read and lowring O ye hypocrites ye can discern the face of the skie but can ye not discern the signes of the times 4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a signe and there shall no signe be given unto it but the signe of the prophet Jonas And he lef them and departed 5 And when his disciples were come to the other side they had forgotten to take bread 6 ¶ Then Jesus said unto them Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees 7 And they reasoned among themselves saying It is because we have taken no bread 8 Which when Jesus perceived he said unto them O ye of little faith why reason ye among your selves because ye have brought no bread 9 * Chap. 14.17 Do ye not yet understand neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets ye took up 10 * Chap. 15.34 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many baskets ye took up 11 How is it that ye do not understand that I speak it not to you concerning bread that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees 12 Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees 13 ¶ When Jesus came into the coasts of Cesarea Philippi he asked his disciples saying * 〈◊〉 8.27 Luk 9.18 Whom do men say that I the Son of man am 14 And they said Some say that thou art John the Baptist some Elias and others Jeremias or one of the prophets 15 He saith unto them But whom say ye that I am 16 And Simon Peter answered and said * Joh. 6.69 thou art Christ the Son of the living God 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him Blessed art thou Simon Bar-jona for flesh and bloud hath not revealed it unto thee but my Father which is in heaven 18 And I say also unto thee that * Joh. 1.42 thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it 19 * Joh. 20.23 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatsoever thou shalt binde on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven 20 Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ 21 ¶ Fom that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples how that he must go unto Jerusalem and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests scribes and be killed and be raised again the third day 22 Then Peter took him and began to rebuke him saying Be it far from thee Lord this shall not be unto thee 23 But he turned and said unto Peter Get thee behinde me Satan thou art an offence unto me for thou savourest not the things that be of God but those that be of men 24 ¶ * Ch. 10.38 Mark 8.34 Then said Jesus unto his disciples If any man will come after me let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall finde it 26 For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul 27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of

XVII 1 The transfiguration of Christ 14 He healeth the lunatick 22 foretelleth his own passion 24 and payeth tribute ANd * Mar. 9.2 Luk. 9.28 after six days Jesus taketh Peter James and John his brother and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart 2 And was transfigured before them and his face did shine as the sun and his raiment was white as the light 3 And behold there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him 4 Then answered Peter and said unto Jesus Lord it is good for us to be here if thou wilt let us make here three tabernacles one for thee and one for Moses and one for Elias 5 * 2 Pet. 1.17 While he yet spake behold a bright cloud overshadowed them and behold a voice out of the cloud which said This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased hear ye him 6 And when the disciples heard it they fell on their face and were sore afraid 7 And Jesus came touched them and said Arise and be not afraid 8 And when they had lift up their eyes they saw no man save Jesus onely 9 And as they came down from the mountain Jesus charged them saying Tell the vision to no man until the Son of man be risen again from the dead 10 And his disciples asked him saying * Ch. 11.14 Mar. 9.11 Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come 11 And Jesus answered and said unto them Elias truly shall first come and restore all things 12 But I say unto you that Elias is come already and they knew him not but have done unto him whatsoever they listed likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them 13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist 14 ¶ * Mar. 9.17 Luk. 9.38 And when they were come to the multitude there came to him a certain man kneeling down to him and saying 15 Lord have mercy on my son for he is lunatick and sore vexed for oft-times he falleth into the fire and oft into the water 16 And I brought him to thy disciples and they could not cure him 17 Then Jesus answered and said O faithless and perverse generation how long shall I be with you how long shall I suffer you bring him hither to me 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil and he departed out of him and the childe was cured from that very hour 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart and said Why could not we cast him out 20 And Jesus said unto them Because of your unbelief for verily I say unto you * Luk. 17.6 If ye have faith as a grain of mustard-seed ye shall say unto this mountain Remove hence to yonder place and it shall remove and nothing shall be unpossible unto you 21 Howbeit this kinde goeth not out but by prayer and fasting 22 ¶ * Ch. 20.17 Mar. 9.31 Luk. 9.44 And while they abode in Galilee Jesus said unto them The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men 23 And they shall kill him and the third day he shall be raised again and they were exceeding sorry 24 ¶ And when they were come to Capernaum they that received ‖ Called in the original didrachma being in value fifteen pence tribute money came to Peter and said Doth not your master pay tribute 25 He saith Yes And when he was come into the house Jesus prevented him saying What thinkest thou Simon of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute of their own children or of strangers 26 Peter saith unto him Of strangers Jesus saith unto him Then are the children free 27 Notwithstanding lest we should offend them go thou to the sea and cast an hook and take up the fish that first cometh up and when thou hast opened his mouth thou shalt finde ‖ Or a stater It is half an ounce of silver in value two shillings six pence after five shillings the ounce a piece of money that take and give unto them for me and thee CHAP. XVIII 1 Christ warneth his disciples to be humble and harmless 7 to avoid offences and not to despise the little ones 15 teacheth how we are to deal with our brethren when they offend us 21 and how oft to forgive them 23 which he setteth forth by a parable of the king that took account of his servants 32 and punished him who shewed no mercy to his fellow AT * Mar. 9. ●● Luk. 9.46 the same time cause the disciples unto Jesus saying Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven 2 And Jesus called a little childe unto him and set him in the midst of them 3 And said Verily I say unto you * Ch. 19.14 1 Cor. 14.20 Except ye be converted and become as little children ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven 4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little childe the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven 5 And whoso shall receive one such little childe in my name receiveth me 6 * Mar 9.42 Luke 17.1 2. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me it were better for him that a milstone were hanged about his neck and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea 7 ¶ Wo unto the world because of offences for it must needs be that offences come but wo to that man by whom the offence cometh 8 * Ch. 5.30 Mar. 9.45 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee cut them off and cast them from thee it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed rather then having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire 9 And if thine eye offend thee pluck it out and cast it from thee it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye rather then having two eyes to be cast into hell-fire 10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones for I say unto you that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven 11 * Luke 19.10 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost 12 * Luk. 15.4 How think ye if a man have an hundred sheep and one of them be gone astray doth he not leave the ninety and nine and goeth into the mountains and seeketh that which is gone astray 13 And if so be that he finde it verily I say unto you he rejoyceth more of that sheep then of the ninety and nine which went not astray 14 Even so it is not the will of your Father which is

old serpent called the devil and Satan which deceiveth the whole world he was cast out into the earth and his angels were cast out with him 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven Now is come salvation and strength and the kingdom of our God and the power of his Christ for the accuser of our brethren is cast down which accused them before our God day and night 11 And they overcame him by the bloud of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony and they loved not their lives unto the death 12 Therefore rejoyce ye heavens and ye that dwell in them Wo to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea for the devil is come down unto you having great wrath because he knoweth that he hath but a short time 13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man childe 14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle that she might flie into the wilderness into her place where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time from the face of the serpent 15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood 16 And the earth helped the woman and the earth opened her mouth and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth 17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman and went to make war with the remnant of her seed which keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ CHAP. XIII 1 A beast riseth out of the sea with seven heads and ten borns to whom the dragon giveth his power 11 Another beast cometh up out of the earth 14 causeth an image to be made of the former beast 15 and that men should worship it 16 and receive his mark ANd I stood upon the sand of the sea and saw a beast rise up out of the sea having seven heads and ten horns and upon his horns ten crowns and upon his heads the ‖ Or names name of blasphemy 2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard and his feet were as the feet of a bear and his mouth as the mouth of a lion and the dragon gave him his power and his seat and great authority 3 And I saw one of his heads as it were † Gr slain wounded to death and his deadly wound was healed and all the world wondred after the beast 4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast and they worshipped the beast saying Who is like unto the beast who is able to make war with him 5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies and power was given unto him ‖ Or to make war to continue fourty and two moneths 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God to blaspheme his name and his tabernacle and them that dwell in heaven 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints and to overcome them and power was given him over all kindreds and tongues and nations 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world 9 If any man have an ear let him hear 10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity * Matth. 16.52 He that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword Here is the patience and the faith of the saints 11 And I behold another beast coming up out of the earth and he had two horns like a lamb and he spake as a dragon 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast whose deadly wound was healed 13 And he doeth great wonders so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast saying to them that dwell on the earth that they should make an image to the beast which had the wound by a sword and did live 15 And he had power to give † Gr. treath life unto the image of the beast that the image of the beast should both speak and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed 16 And he causeth all both small and great rich and poor free and bond † Gr. to give to receive a mark in their right hand or in their foreheads 17 And that no man might buy or sell save he that had the mark or the name of the beast or the number of his name 18 Here is wisdom Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast for it is the number of a man and his number is six hundred threescore and six CHAP. XIV 1 The Lamb standing on mount Sion with his company 6 an angel preacheth the gospel 8 The fall of Babylon 15 The harvest of the world and putting in of the sickle 20 The vintage and winepress of the wrath of God ANd I looked and lo a Lamb stood on the mount Sion and with him an hundred fourty and four thousand having his Fathers name written in their foreheads 2 And I heard a voice from heaven as the voice of many waters and as the voice of a great thunder and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps 3 And they sung as it were a new song before the throne and before the four beasts and the elders and no man could learn that song but the hundred and fourty and four thousand which were redeemed from the earth 4 These are they which were not defiled with women for they are virgins these are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth these † Gr. were bought were redeemed from among men being the first-fruits unto God and to the Lamb. 5 And in their mouth was found no guile for they are without fault before the throne of God 6 And I saw another angel flie in the midst of heaven having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth and to every nation and kindred and tongue and people 7 Saying with a loud voice Fear God and give glory to him for the hour of his judgement is come * Psal 146.5.6 Act. 14.15 and worship him that made heaven and earth and the sea and the fountains of waters 8 And there followed another angel saying * Isa 21.9 Jer. 51.8 Chap. 18.2 Babylon is faln is faln that great city because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication 9 And the third angel followed them saying with a loud voice
in heaven that one of these little ones should perish 15 ¶ Moreover * Levit. 19.17 Luk. 17.3 if thy brother shall trespass against thee go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone if he shall hear thee thou hast gained thy brother 16 But if he will not hear thee then take with thee one or two more that in * Deut. 19.15 Joh. 8.17 2 Cor. 13.1 Heb. 10 28. the mo●th of two or three witnesses every word may be established 17 And if he shall neglect to hear them tell it unto the church but if he neglect to hear the church let him be unto thee as an * 1 Cor. 5.9 2 Thess 3.14 heathen man and a publican 18 Verily I say unto you * John 20.23 1 Cor. 5.4 Whatsoever ye shall binde on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven 19 Again I say unto you that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name there am I in the midst of them 21 ¶ Then came Peter to him and said Lord how oft shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him * Luk. 17.4 till seven times 22 Jesus saith unto him I say not unto thee Until seven times but until seventy times seven 23 ¶ Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king which would take account of his servants 24 And when he had begun to reckon one was brought unto him which ought him ten thousand ‖ A talent is 750 ounces of silver which after five shillings the ounce is 187 pounds 10 shillings talents 25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay his lord commanded him to be sold his wife children all that he had and paiment to be made 26 The servant therefore fell down and ‖ Or besought him worshipped him saying Lord have patience with me and I will pay thee all 27 Then the Lord of that servant was moved with compassion and loosed him and forgave him the debt 28 But the same servant went out and found one of his fellow-servants which ought him an hundred ‖ The Romane peny is the eighth part of an ounce which after five shillings the ounce is seven pence half-peny pence and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat saying Pay me that thou owest 29 And his fellow servant fell down at his feet and besought him saying Have patience with me and I will pay thee all 30 And he would not but went and cast him into prison till he should pay the debt 31 So when his fellow-servants saw what was done they were very sorry and came and told unto their lord all that was done 32 Then his lord after that he had called him said unto him O thou wicked servant I forgave thee all that debt because thou desiredst me 33 Shouldst not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow-servant even as I had pity on thee 34 And his lord was wroth and delivered him to the tormentors till he should pay all that was due unto him 35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses CHAP. XIX 2 Christ healeth the sick 3 answereth the Pharisees concerning divorcement 10 sheweth when marriage is necessary 13 receiveth little children 16 instructeth the young man how to attain eternal life 20 and how to he perfect 23 telleth his disciples how hard it is for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God 27 and promiseth reward to those that forsake any thing to follow him ANd it came to pass * Mar. 10.1 that when Jesus had finished these sayings he departed from Galilee and came into the coasts of Judea beyond Jordan 2 And great multitudes followed him and he healed them there 3 ¶ The Pharisees also came unto him tempting him and saying unto him Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause 4 And he answered and said unto them Have ye not read * Gen. 1.27 that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female 5 And said * Gen. 2.24 Eph. 5.31 For this cause shall a man leave father and mother and shall cleave to his wife and * 1 Cor. 6.16 they twain shall be one flesh 6 Wherefore they are no more twain but one flesh What therefore God hath joyned together let no man put asunder 7 They say unto him * Deut. 24.1 Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement and to put her away 8 He saith unto them Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives but from the beginning it was not so 9 * Ch. 5.32 Mar. 10.11 Luk. 16.18 1 Cor. 7.11 And I say unto you Whosoever shall put away his wife except it be for fornication and shall marry another committeth adultery and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery 10 ¶ His disciples say unto him If the case of the man be so with his wife it is not good to marry 11 But he said unto them All men cannot receive this saying save they to whom it is given 12 For there are some eunuchs which were so born from their mothers womb and there are some eunuchs which were made eunuchs of men and there be eunuchs which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heavens sake He that is able to receive it let him receive it 13 ¶ * Mar. 10.13 Luk. 18.15 Then were there brought unto him little children that he should put his hands on them and pray and the disciples rebuked them 14 But Jesus said Suffer little children and forbid them not to come unto me for of such is the kingdom of heaven 15 And he laid his hands on them and departed thence 16 ¶ * Mat. 10.17 Luk. 18.18 And behold one came and said unto him Good master what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life 17 And he said unto him Why callest thou me good there is none good but one that is God but if thou wilt enter into life keep the commandments 18 He saith unto him Which Jesus said * Exod. ●● 13 Thou shalt do no murder Thou shalt not commit adultery Thou shalt not steal Thou shalt not bear false witness 19 Honour thy father and thy mother and Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself 20 The young man saith unto him All these things have I kept from my youth up what lack I yet 21 Jesus said unto him If thou wilt be perfect go and sell that thou hast and give to the poor and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come and follow me
