because they remembred the great evil that he had done in Israel for he had afflicted them very fore 47 But with Alexander they were well pleased because he was the first that entreateth of true peace Alexander followed after him and prevaised against them 50 And he continued the battel very fore until the fun went down and that day was Demetrius flain 51 Afterward Alexander sent ambassadours to nothing shall by any means hurt you 20 Notwithstanding in this rejoyce not that the spirits are subject unto you but rather rejoyce because your names are written in heaven 21 ¶ In that hour Jesus rejoyced in spirit and said I thank thee O Father Lord of heaven and earth that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent and hast revealed them unto babes even so Father for so it seemed good in thy light 22 ‖ Many ancient copies add these words And turning to his disciples be said All things are delivered to me of my Father and no man knoweth who the Son is but the Father and who the Father is but the Son and he to whom the Son will reveal him 23 ¶ And he turned him unto his disciples and said privately * Mat. 13.16 Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see and have not seen them and to hear those things which ye hear and have not heard them 25 ¶ And behold a certain lawyer stood up and tempted him saying * Mat. 22.35 Master what shall I do to inherit eternal life 26 He said unto him What is written in the law how readest thou 27 And he answering said Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul and with all thy strength and with all thy minde and thy neighbour as thy self 28 And he said unto him Thou hast answered right this do and thou shalt live 29 But he willing to justifie himself said unto Jesus And who is my neighbour 30 And Jesus answering said A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among theeves which stripped him of his raiment and wounded him and departed leaving him half-dead 31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way and when he saw him he passed by on the other side 32 And likewise a Levite when he was at the place came and looked on him and passed by on the other side 33 But a certain Samaritan as he journeyed came where he was and when he saw him he had compassion on him 34 And went to him bound up his wounds pouring in oyl wine set him on his own beast brought him to an inn took care of him 35 And on the morrow when he departed he took out two ‖ See Mat. 2● 2 pence and gave them to the host said unto him Take care of him whatsoever thou spendest more when I come again I will repay thee 36 Which now of these three thinkest thou was neighbour unto him that fell among the theeves 37 And he said He that shewed mercy on him Then said Jesus unto him Go and do thou likewise 38 ¶ Now it came to pass as they went that he entred into a certain village a certain woman named Martha received him into her house 39 And she had a sister called Mary which also sat at Jesus feet and heard his word 40 But Martha was cumbred about much serving and came to him and said Lord dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone bid her therefore that she help me 41 And Jesus answered and said unto her Martha Martha thou art careful and troubled about many things 42 But one thing is needful And Mary hath chosen that good part which shall not be taken away from her CHAP. XI 3 Christ teacheth to pray and that instantly 11 assuring that God so will give us good things 14 He casting out a dumb devil rebuketh the blasphemous Pharisees 28 and sheweth who are blessed 29 preacheth to the people 37 and reprehendeth the outward shew of holiness in the Pharisees scribes and lawyers ANd it came to pass that as he was praying in a certain place when he ceased one of his disciples said unto him Lord teach us to pray as John also taught his disciples 2 And he said unto them When ye pray say * Mat. 6.9 Our Father which art in heaven Hallowed be thy name Thy kingdom come Thy will be done as in heaven so in earth 3 Give us ‖ Or for the day day by day our daily bread 4 And forgive us our sins for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil 5 And he said unto them Which of you shall have a friend and shall go unto him at mid-night say unto him Friend lend me three loaves 6 For a friend of mine ‖ Or out of his way in his journey is come to me and I have nothing to set before him 7 And he from within shall answer and say Trouble me not the door is now shut and my children are with me in bed I cannot rise and give thee 8 I say unto you Though he will not rise and give him because he is his friend yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth 9 * Mat. 7.7 And I say unto you Ask and it shall be given you seek and ye shall finde knock and it shall be opened unto you 10 For every one that asketh receiveth and he that seeketh findeth and to him that knocketh it shall be opened 11 * Mat. 7.9 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father will he give him a stone or if he ask a fish will he for a fish give him a serpent 12 Or if he shall ask an egg will he offer him a scorpion 13 If ye then being evil know how to give good gifts unto your children how much more shall your heavenly Father give the holy Spirit to them that ask him 14 ¶ And he was calling out a devil and it was dumb And it came to pass when the devil was gone out the dumb spake and the people wondred 15 But some of them said * Mat. 9.34 〈◊〉 12.24 He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils 16 And others tempting him sought of him a signe from heaven 17 But he knowing their thoughts said unto them Every kingdom divided against it self is brought to desolation and a house divided against a house falleth 18 If Satan also be divided against himself how shall his kingdom stand because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub 19 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils by whom do your sons cast them out therefore shall they be your judges 20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you 21 When a strong man armed keepeth his palace his goods are in peace 22 But when a stronger then he shall come upon him and over come him he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted and divideth his spoils 23 He that is not with me is against me and he
shall be forgiven him but unto him that blasphemeth against the holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven 11 * Matth. 10.19 And when they bring you unto the synagogues and unto magistrates and powers take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer or what ye shall say 12 For the holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say 13 ¶ And one of the company said unto him Master speak to my brother that he divide the inheritance with me 14 And he said unto him Man who made me a judge or a divider over you 15 And he said unto them Take heed and beware of covetousness for a mans life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth 16 And he spake a parable unto them saying The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully 17 And he thought within himself saying What shall I do because I have no room where to bestow my fruits 18 And he said This will I do I will pull down my barns and build greater and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods 19 And I will say to my soul Soul thou hast much goods laid up for many years take thine ease eat drink and be merry 20 But God said unto him Thou fool this night ‖ Or do they require thy soul thy soul Therefore I say unto you * Matth. 6.25 Take no thought for your life what ye shall eat neither for the body what ye shall put on 23 The life is more then meat and the body is more then raiment 24 Consider the ravens for they neither sow nor reap which neither have storehouse nor barn and God feedeth them How much more are ye better then the fowls 25 And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit 26 If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least why take ye thought for the rest 27 Consider the lilies how they grow They toil not they spin not and yet I say unto you that Solomon in all his glory was not arayed like one of these 28 If then God so clothe the grass which is to day in the field and to morrow is cast into the oven how much more will he clothe you O ye of little faith 29 And seek not ye what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink ‖ Or live not in careful suspense neither be ye of doubtful minde 30 For all these things do the nations of the world suffered his house to be broken through 40 Be ye therefore ready also for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not 41 ¶ Then Peter said unto him Lord speakest thou this parable unto us or even to all 42 And the Lord said Who then is that faithful and wise steward whom his lord shall make ruler over his houshold to give them their portion of meat in due season 43 Blessed is that servant whom his lord when he cometh shall finde so doing 44 Of a truth I say unto you that he will make him ruler over all that he hath 45 But and if that servant say in his heart My lord delayeth his coming and shall begin to beat the men-servants and maidens and to eat and drink and to be drunken 46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him and at an hour when he is not aware and will ‖ Or cut him off cut him in sunder and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers 47 And that servant which knew his lords will and prepared not himself neither did according to his will shall be beaten with many stripes 48 But he that knew not and did commit things worthy of stripes shall be beaten with few stripes For unto whomsoever much is given of him shall be much 20.25 And he said unto them The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactours 26 But ye shall not be so but he that is greatest among you let him be as the younger and he that is chief as he that doth serve 27 For whether is greater he that sitteth at meat or he that serveth is not he that sitteth at meat but I am among you as Paul was at all times in thanksgiving and prayer 5 and also how well he was perswaded of the truth and sin●●rity of their saith and conversion to God PAul and Silvanus and Timotheus unto the church of the Thessa●onians which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ Grace be unto you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 2 * Philem. 4 We give thanks to God always for you all making mention of you in our prayers 3 Remembring without ceasing your work of faith and labour of love and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of God and our Father 4 Knowing brethren ‖ Or beloved of God your election beloved your election of God 5 For our gospel came not unto you in word onely but also in power and in the hol● Ghost and in much assurance as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake 6 And ye became followers of us and of the Lord having received the word in much affliction with joy of the holy Ghost 7 So that ye were ensamples to all that beleeve in Macedonia Achaia 8 For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not onely in Macedonia and Achaia but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad so that we need not to speak any thing 9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entring in we had unto you and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God 10 And to wait for his Son from heaven whom he raised from the dead even Jesus which delievered us from the wrath to come CHAP. II. 1 In what manner the gospel was brought and preached to the Thessalonians and in what sort also they received it 18 A reason is rendred both why S. Paul was so long absent from them and also why he was so desirous to see them FOr your selves brethren know our entrance in unto you that it was not in vain 2 But even after that we had suffered before and were shamefully entreated as ye know at * Act. 16.22 Philippi we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention 3 For our exhortation was not of deceit nor of uncleanness nor in guile 4 But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel even so we speak not as p●●asing men but God which trieth our hearts 5 For neither at any time used we flattering words as ye know nor a cloke of covetousness God is witness 6 Nor of men sought we glory neither of you nor yet of others when we might have ‖ Or used authority been burdensom as the apostles of Christ 7 But we were gentle among you even as a nurse cherisheth her children 8 So being affectionately desirous of you we were willing to have imparted unto you not the gospel of God onely but also our own souls because ye were dear unto us 9 For ye remember brethren our labour and travel for * Acts 20.34 1 Cor. 4.12 2 Thes 3.8 labouring night and day because we would not be chargeable unto any of you we preached unto you the gospel of God 10 Ye are witnesses and God also how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved our selves among you that beleeve 11 As you know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you as a father doth his children 12 * Eph. 4.1 Phil. 1.27 Col. 1.10 That ye would walk worthy of God who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory 13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing because when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us ye received it not as the word of men but as it is in truth the word of God which effectually worketh also in you that beleeve 14 For ye brethren became followers of the churches of God which in Judea are in Christ Jesus for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrey men even as they have of the Jews 15 Who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own prophets have ‖ Or chased us out persecuted us and they please not God and are contrary to all men 16 Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved to fill up their sins alway for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost 17 But we brethren being taken from you
