CLXVII The chief priests Scribes and elders consult how by craft they may take Christ and put him to death M Matth. CLXVIII The treacherous bargain of Judas Iscariot with the high priests L Luke V. 3 THen entred Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot being of the number of the twelve M Matth. V. 14 Then one of the twelve called Judas Iscariot went unto the chief priests Mr. Mark V. 10 to betray him unto them L Luke V. 4 And he went his way and communed with the chief priests and captains how he might betray him unto them Mr. Mark V. 11 And when they heard it they were glad and promised to give him money M Matth. V. 15 And he said unto them What will ye give me and I will deliver him unto you and they covenanted with him for thirtie pieces of silver L Luke V. 6 And he promised M Matth. V. 16 And from that time he sought opportunitie to betray him Mr. Mark V. 11 and how he might conveniently betray him L Luke V. 6 unto them in the absence of the multitude CHAP. CLXIX The preparation to the last passeover and the celebration of it L Luke Ch. 22 V. 7 THen came the day of unleavened bread when the passeover must be killed M Matth. Ch. 26 V. 17 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread Mr. Mark Ch. 14 V. 12 when they killed the passeover L Luke V. 8 he sent Peter and John saying Go and prepare us the passeover that we may eat And Mr. Mark Ch. 14 V. 12 his M Matth. Ch. 26 V. 17 disciples came unto Jesus saying unto him Where wilt thou Mr. Mark Ch. 14 V. 12 that we go and prepare M Matth. Ch. 26 V. 17 for thee to eat the passeover Mr. Mark V. 13 And he sendeth forth two of his disciples and saith unto them Go ye into the citie M Matth. V. 18 to such a man L Luke V. 10 and behold when ye are entred into the citie there shall a man meet you bearing a pitcher of water follow him into the house where he entreth in Mr. Mark V. 14 And wheresoever he shall go in say ye M Matth. V. 18 unto him Mr. Mark V. 14 to the good man of the house L Luke V. 11 The Master saith unto thee M Matth. V. 18 My time is at hand I will keep the passeover at thy house with my disciples Mr. Matth. V. 18 where is the guest-chamber where I shall eat the passeover with my disciples Mark V. 15 And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared there make readie for us Mark V. 16 And his disciples went forth and came into the citie L Luke V. 13 and they went and found as he had said unto them M Matth. V. 19 and did as Jesus had appointed them and they made readie the passeover Now when the even was come Matth. V. 20 Mr. Mark V. 17 he cometh with the twelve L Luke V. 14 And when the houre was come he sat down and the twelve apostles with him And he said unto them Luke V. 15 With desire I have desired to eat this passeover with you before I suffer Luke Ch. 22 V. 16 For I say unto you I will not any more eat thereof untill it be fulfilled in the kingdome of God Luke V. 17 And he took the cup and gave thanks and said Take this and divide it among your selves Luke V. 18 For I say unto you I will not drink of the fruit of the vine untill the kingdome of God shall come CHAP. CLXX Christ washeth the feet of the disciples J John Ch. 13 V. 1 * Matth. Ch. 26 V. 2 NOw before the feast of the passeover when Jesus knew that his houre was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father having loved his own which were in the world he loved them unto the end John V. 2 And supper being ended the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot Simons sonne to betray him Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands John V. 3 and that he was come from God and went to God John V. 4 He riseth from supper and laid aside his garments and took a towell and girded himself After that John V. 5 he poureth water into a bason and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe them with the towell wherewith he was girded John V. 6 Then cometh he to Simon Peter and Peter saith unto him Lord dost thou wash my feet John V. 7 Jesus answered and said unto him What I do thou knowest not now but thou shalt know hereafter Peter saith unto him John V. 8 Thou shalt never wash my feet Jesus answered him If I wash thee not thou hast no part with me Simon Peter saith unto him Lord John V. 9 not my feet onely but also my hands and my head John V. 10 Jesus saith to him He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet but is clean every whit and ye are clean but not all John V. 11 For he knew who should betray him therefore said he Ye are not all clean So after he had washed their feet John Ch. 13 V. 12 and had taken his garments and was set down again he said unto them Know ye what I have done to you John V. 13 Ye call me Master and Lord and ye say well for so I am
John V. 14 If I then your Lord and Master have washed your feet ye also ought to wash one anothers feet For I have given you an example John V. 15 that ye should do as I have done to you * John Ch. 13 V. 16 Ch. 15 V. 20 Matth. Ch. 10 V. 24 Verily verily I say unto you The servant is not greater then his Lord neither he that is sent greater then he that sent him If ye know these things John Ch. 13 V. 17 happy are ye if ye do them I speak not of you all John V. 18 I know whom I have chosen but that the scripture may be fulfilled He that eateth bread with me hath lift up his heel against me John V. 19 Now I tell you before it come that when it is come to passe ye may beleeve that I am he * Matth. Ch. 10 V. 40 Verily verily I say unto you John V. 20 He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me CHAP. CLXXI. Christ institutes the sacrament of the Eucharist M Matth. Ch. 26 V. 26 ANd as they were eating Jesus took bread L Luke Ch. 22 V. 19 and gave thanks M Matth. Ch. 26 V. 26 and blessed it and brake it and gave it to the disciples and said Take eat this is my bodie L Luke V. 20 which is given for you this do in remembrance of me Likewise also M Matth. V. 27 he took the cup L Luke V. 20 after supper Mr. Mark Ch. 14 V. 23 and when he had given thanks he gave it to them M Matth. V. 28 saying Drink ye all of it For this is my bloud of the new testament L Luke V. 20 this cup is the new testament in my bloud which is shed for you and M Matth. V. 28 for many for the remission of sinnes Mr. Mark Ch. 14 V. 23 and they all drank of it Mark Ch. 14 V. 25 Verily I say unto you M Matth. CLXXII A peculiar action of Christ with Judas the traitour Mr. Mark V. 18 ANd as they sat and did eat J John Ch. 13 V. 21 when Jesus had thus said he was troubled in spirit and testified and said L Luke Ch. 22 V. 21 But behold the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table J John Ch. 13 V. 21 Verily verily I say unto you that one of you Mr. Mark V. 18 which eateth with me shall betray me J John V. 22 Then the disciples Mr. Mark V. 19 began to be sorrowfull and J John V. 22 looked one on another doubting of whom he spake L Luke V. 23 And they began to enquire among themselves which of them it was that should do this thing M Matth. V. 22 And they were exceeding sorrowfull and began every one of them to say unto him Mr. Mark V. 20 one by one M Matth. V. 22 Lord is it I Mr. Mark V. 20 And another said Is it I And he answered and said unto them It is one of the twelve that dippeth M Matth. V. 23 his hand with me in the dish the same shall betray me L Luke V. 22 And truely the Sonne of man goeth as it was determined Mr. Mark V. 21 as it is written of him but wo to that man by whom the Sonne of man is betrayed good were it for that man if he had never been born J John V. 23 Now there was leaning on Jesus bosome one of his disciples whom Jesus loved John V. 24 Simon Peter therefore beckened to him that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake John V. 25 He then lying on Jesus breast saith unto him Lord who is it John V. 26 Jesus answered He it is to whom I shall give a sop when I have dipped it And when he had dipped the sop he gave it to Judas Iscariot the sonne of Simon And after the sop Satan entred into him John Ch. 13 V. 27 Then said Jesus unto him That thou doest do quickly Now no man at the table knew John V. 28 for what intent he spake this unto him John V. 29 For some of them thought because Judas had the bag that Jesus had said unto him Buy those things that we have need of against the feast or that he should give something to the poore M Matth. Ch. 26 V. 25 Then Judas which betrayed him answered and said Master is it I He said unto him Thou hast said J John V. 30 He then having received the sop went immediately out and it was night Therefore when he was gone out John V. 31 Jesus said Now is the Sonne of man glorified and God is glorified in him John V. 32 If God be glorified in him God shall also glorifie him in himself and shall straightway glorifie him CHAP. CLXXIII Christ makes a friendly composition of the contention raised among the apostles about the primacie L Luke Ch. 22 V. 24 ANd there was also a strife among them which of them should be accounted the greatest And he said unto them Luke V. 25 The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them and they that exercise authoritie upon them are called benefactours But ye shall not be so Luke V. 26 but he that is greatest among you let him be as the younger and he that is chief as he that doth serve Luke V. 27 For whether is greater he that sitteth at meat or he that serveth is not he that sitteth at meat but I am among you as he that serveth Luke V. 28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations And I appoint unto you a kingdome Luke V. 29 as my Father hath appointed unto me Luke V. 30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdome and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel CHAP. in secret and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly Sect. VII Against covetousnesse and worldly cares Lay not up for your selves treasures upon earth Matth. V. 25 Therefore I say unto you * Luke Ch. 12 V. 22 Take no thought for your life what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink nor yet for your bodie what ye shall put on Is not the life more then meat and the bodie then raiment Behold the fowls of the aire Matth. V. 26 for they sow not neither do they reap nor gather into barns yet your heavenly Father feedeth them Are ye not much better then they Matth. V. 27 Which of you by taking thought can adde one cubit unto his stature Matth. V. 28 And why take ye thought for raiment Consider the lilies of the field how they grow they toyl not neither do they spinne Matth. V. 29 And yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his glorie was not arayed like one of these Matth. V. 30 Wherefore if God so clothe the grasse of the field which to day is and to morrow is cast into the oven shall he not much more clothe you Matth. V. 31 Oye of little faith Therefore take no thought saying What shall we eat or what shall we drink or wherewith shall we be clothed Matth. V. 32 For after all these things do the Gentiles seek for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things Matth. V. 33 But seek ye first the kingdome of God and his righteousnesse and all these things shall be added unto you Matth. An exhortation to a vigilant expectation of the kingdome of heaven Let your loyns be girded about Luke V. 35 and your lights burning Luke V. 36 And ye your selves like unto men that wait for their Lord when he will return from the wedding that when he cometh and knocketh they may open unto him immediately Luke V. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the Lord when he cometh shall finde watching verily I say unto you that he shall gird himself and make them to sit down to meat and will come forth and serve them And if he shall come in the second watch Luke V. 38 or come in the third watch and finde them so blessed are those servants * Matth. Ch. 24 V. 43 And this know Luke V. 39 that if the good man of the house had known what houre the thief would come he would have watched and not have suffered his house to be broken through Be ye therefore readie also Luke V. 40 for the Sonne of man cometh at an houre when ye think not Sect. The office of the apostles and of ministers that are set over others The effect of the Gospel preached Then Peter said unto him Lord Luke V. 41 speakest thou this parable unto us or even to all Luke Ch. 12 V. 42 And the Lord said Who then is that faithfull and wise steward whom his lord shall make ruler over his houshold to give them their portion of meat in due season Blessed is that servant Luke V. 43 whom his lord when he cometh shall finde so doing Luke V. 44 Of a truth I say unto you that he will make him ruler over all that he hath Luke V. 45 But and if that servant say in his heart My lord delayeth his coming and shall begin to beat the men-servants and the maidens and to eat and drink and to be drunken Luke V. 46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him and at an houre when he is not ware and will cut him in sunder and will appoint him his portion with the unbeleevers And that servant which knew his lords will Luke V. 47 and prepared not himself neither did according to his will shall be beaten with many stripes Luke V. 48 But he that knew not and did commit things worthy of stripes shall be beaten with few stripes For unto whomsoever much is given of him shall be much required and to whom men have committed much of him they will ask the more Luke V. 49 I am come to send fire on the earth and what will I if it be alreadie kindled Luke V. 50 But I have a baptisme to be baptized with and how am I straitned till it be accomplished * Matth. CXI An exhortation to repentance because of Gods patience The parable of the barren fig-tree L Luke Ch. 13 V. 1 THere were present at that season some that told him of the Galileans whose bloud Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices Luke V. 2 And Jesus answering said unto them Suppose ye that these Galileans were sinners above all the Galileans because they suffered such things I tell you Nay Luke V. 3 but except ye repent ye shall all likewise perish Or those eighteen upon whom the tower in Siloam fell and slew them Luke V. 4 think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem I tell you Nay but except ye repent Luke V. 5 ye shall all likewise perish He spake also this parable Luke V. 6 A certain man had a fig-tree planted in his vineyard and he came and sought fruit thereon and found none Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard Luke Ch. 13 V. 7 Behold these three yeares I
