Let the king live God save the king 25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom and wrote it in a book and said it up before the LORD and Samuel sent all the people away every man to his house 26 ¶ And Saul also went home to Gibeah and there went with him a band of men whose hearts God had touched 27 But the children of Belial said How shall this man save us And they despised him and brought him no presents but ‖ Or he was as thouth he had been deaf he held his peace CHAP. XI 1 Nahash offereth them of Jabesh-giâ—ead a reproachful condition 4 They send messengers and are delivered by Saul 12 Sual thereby is confirmed and his kingdom renewed THen Nahash the Ammonite came up and encamped against Jabesh-gilead and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash Make a covenant with us and we will serve thee 2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them On this condition will I make a covenant with you that I may thrust out all your right eyes and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel 3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him †Heb. Forbear us Give us seven days respite that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel and then if there be no man to save us we will come out to thee 4 ¶ Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul and told the tidings in the ears of the people and all the people lift up their voices and wept 5 And behold Saul came after the herd out of the field and Saul said What aileth the people that they weep and they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh 6 And the spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings and his anger was kind led greatly 7 And he took a yoke of oxen and hewed them in pieces and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers saying Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel so shall it be done unto his oxen and the fear of the LORD fell on the people and they came out †Heb. as one man with one consent 8 And when he numbred them in Bezek the children of Israel were three hundred thousand and the men of Judah thirty thousand 9 And they said unto the messengers that came Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead To morrow by that time the sun be hot ye shall have †Or deliverance help And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh and they were glad 10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said To morrow we will come out unto you and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you 11 And it was so on the morrow that Saul put the people in three companies and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day and it came to pass that they which remained were scattered so that two of them were not left together 12 ¶ And the people said unto Samuel Who is he that said Shall Saul reign over us bring the men that we may put them to death 13 And Saul said There shall not a man be put to death this day for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel 14 Then said Samuel to the people Come and let us go to Gilgal and renew the kingdom there 15 And all the people went to Gilgal and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace-offerings before the LORD and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoyced greatly CHAP. XII 1 Samuel testifieth his integrity 6 He reproveth the people of ingratitude 16 He terrifieth them with thunder in harvest-time 20 He comforteth them in Gods mercy ANd Samuel said unto all Israel Behold I have hearkned unto your voice in all that ye said unto me and have made a king over you 2 And now behold the king walketh
light †Heb. of his feet of foot †Heb. as one of the roes that is in the field as a wilde roe 19 And Asahel pursued after Abner and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left †Heb. from after Abner from following Abner 20 Then Abner looked behinde him and said Art thou Asahel and he answered I am 21 And Abner said to him Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left and lay thee hold on one of the young men and take thee his ‖ Or spoil armour But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him 22 And Abner said again to Asahel Turn thee aside from following me wherefore should I smite thee to the ground how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother 23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib that the spear came out behinde him and he fell down there and died in the same place and it came to pass that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still 24 Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon 25 ¶ And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner and became one troup and stood on the top of an hill 26 Then Abner called to Joab and said Shall the sword devour for ever knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end how long shall it be then ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren 27 And Joab said As God liveth unless thou hadst spoken surely then †Heb. from the morning in the morning the people had ‖ Or gone away gone up every one from following his brother 28 So Joab blew a trumpet and all the people stood still and pursued after Israel no more neither fought they any more 29 And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain and passed over Jordan and went through all Bithron and they came to Mahanaim 30 And Joab returned from following Abner and when he had gathered all the people together there lacked of Davids servants nineteen men and Asahel 31 But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin and of Abners men so that three hundred and threescore men died 32 ¶ And they took up Asahel and buried him in the sepulchre of his father which was in Beth-lehem and Joab and his men went all night and they came to Hebron at break of day CHAP. III. 1 During the war David still waxeth stronger 2 Six sons were born to him in Hebron 6 Abner displeased with Ish-bosheth 12 revolteth to David 13 David requireth a condition to bring him his wife Michal 17 Abner having communed with the Israelites is feasted by David and dismissed 22 Joab returning from battel is displeased with the king and killeth Abner 28 David curseth Joab 31 and mourneth for Abner NOw there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David but David waxed stronger and stronger and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker 2 ¶ And unto David were sons born in Hebron and his first-born was Amnon of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess 3 And his second Chileab of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite and the third Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur 4 And the fourth Adonijah the son of Haggith and the fifth Shephatiah the son of Abital 5 And the sixth Ithream by Eglah Davids wife these were born to David in Hebron 6 ¶ And it came to pass while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul 7 And Saul had a concubine whose name was * Chap. 21.10 Rizpah the daughter of Aiah and Ish-bosheth said unto Abner Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my fathers concubine 8 Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth and said Am I a dogs head which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father to his brethren and to his friends and have not delivered thee into the hand of David that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman 9 So do God to Abner and more also except as the LORD hath sworn to David even so I do to him 10 To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah from Dan even to Beer sheba 11 And he could not answer Abner a word again because he feared him 12 ¶ And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf saying Whose is the land saying also Make thy league with me and behold my hand shall be with thee to bring about all Israel unto thee 13 ¶ And he said Well I will make a league with thee but one thing I require of thee †Heb. saying that is Thou shalt not see my face except thou first bring Michal Sauls daughter when thou comest to see my face 14 And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth Sauls son saying Deliver me my wife Michal which I espoused to me * 1 Sam. 18.25 27. for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines 15 And Ish-bosheth sent and took her from her husband even from * 1 Sam. 25.44 Phalti Phaltiel the son of Laish 16 And her husband went with her †Heb. going and weeping along weeping behinde her to Bahurim then said Abner unto him Go return And he returned 17 ¶ And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel saying Ye sought for David †Heb. both yesterday and the third day in times past to be king over you 18 Now then do it for the LORD hath spoken of David saying By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines and out of the hand of all their enemies 19 And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin 20 So Abner came to David to Hebron and twenty men with him and David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast 21 And Abner said unto David I will arise and go and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king that they may make a league with thee that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth And David sent Abner away and he went in peace 22 ¶ And behold the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troup and brought in a great spoil with them but Abner was not with David in Hebron for he had sent him away and he was gone in peace 23 When
with him covered every man his head and they went up weeping as they went up 31 ¶ And one told David saying Ahithophel is among the conspiratours with Absalom And David said O LORD I pray thee turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness 32 ¶ And it came to pass that when David was come to the top of the mount where he worshipped God behold Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent and earth upon his head 33 Unto whom David said If thou passest on with me then thou shalt be a burden unto me 34 But if thou return to the city and say unto Absalom I will be thy servant O king as I have been thy fathers servant hitherto so will I now also be thy servant then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel 35 And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests therefore it shall be that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the kings house thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests 36 Behold they have there with them their two sons Ammaaz Zadoks son and Jonathan Abiathars son and by them ye shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear 37 So Hushai Davids friend came into the city and Absalom came into Jerusalem CHAP. XVI 1 Ziba by presents and false suggestions obtaineth his masters inheritance 5 At Bahurim Shimei curseth David 9 David with patience abstaineth and restraineth others from revenge 15 Hushai insinuateth himself into Absaloms counsel 20 Abithophels counsel ANd when David was a little past the top of the hill behold Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him with a couple of asses saddled and upon them two hundred loaves of bread and an hundred bunches of raisins and an hundred of summer-fruits and a bottle of wine 2 And the king said unto Ziba What meanest thou by these And Ziba said The asses be for the kings houshold to ride on and the bread and summer-fruit for the young men to eat and the wine that suâ—h as be faint in the wilderness may drink 3 And the king said And where is thy masters son And Ziba said unto the king Behold he abideth at Jerusalem for he said To day shall the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father 4 Then said the king to Ziba Behold thine are all that pertained unto Mephibosheth And Ziba said †Heb. I do obeisance I humbly beseech thee that I may finde grace in thy sight my lord O king 5 ¶ And when king David came to Bahurim behold thence came out a man of the family of the house of Saul whose name was Shimei the son of Gera ‖ Or he still came forth and cursed he came forth and cursed still as he came 6 And he cast stones at David and at all the servants of king David and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left 7 And thus said Shimei when he cursed Come out come out thou †Heb. man of bloud bloudy man and thou man of Belial 8 The LORD hath returned upon thee all the bloud of the house of Saul in whose stead thou hast reigned and the LORD hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son and †Heb. behold thee in thy evil behold thou art taken in thy mischief because thou art a bloudy man 9 ¶ Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king Why should this * 1 Sam. 24.14 Chap. 9.8 dead dog curse my lord the king let me go over I pray thee and take off his head 10 And he king said What have I to do with you ye sons of Zeruiah so let him curse because the LORD hath said unto him Curse David Who shall then say Wherefore hast thou done so 11 And David said to Abishai and to all his servants Behold my son which came forth of my bowels seeketh my life how much more now may this Benjamite do it let him alone and let him curse for the LORD hath bidden him 12 It may be that the LORD will look on mine ‖ Or zeaâ—s †Heb. eye affiliction and that the LORD will requite me good for his cursing this day 13 And as David and his men went by the way Shimei went along on the hills side over against him and cursed as he went and threw sâ—â—nes at him and †Heb. duâ—ted him with dust cast dust 14 And the king and all the people that were with him came weary and refreshed themselves there 15 ¶ And Absalom and all the people the men of Israel came to Jerusalem and Ahithophel with him 16 And it came to pass when Hushai the Archite Davids friend was come unto Absalom that Hushai said unto Absalom †Heb. Let the king live God save the king God save the king 17 And Absalom said to Hushai Is this thy kindness to thy friend why wentest thou not with thy friend 18 And Hushai said unto Absalom Nay but whom the LORD and this people and all the men of Israel choose his will I be and with him will I abide 19 And again whom should I serve should I not serve in the presence of his son as I have served in thy fathers presence so will I be in thy presence 20 ¶ Then said Absalom to Ahithophel Give counsel among you what we shall do 21 And Ahithophel said unto Absalom Go in unto thy fathers concubines which he hath left to keep the house and all Israel shall hear that thou art abhorred of thy father then shall the hands of all that are with thee be strong 22 So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house and Absalom went in unto his fathers concubines in the sight of all Israel 23 And the counsel of Ahithophel which he counselled in those days was as if a man had enquired at the †Heb. word oracle of God so was all the counsel of Ahithophel born with David and with Absalom CHAP. XVII 1 Ahithophels counsel is overthrown by Hushai's according to Gods appointment 15 Secret intelligence is sent unto David 23 Ahithophel hangeth himself 25 Amasa is made captain 27 David at Mahanaim is furnished with provision MOreover Ahithophel said unto Ahsalom Let me now choose out twelve thousand men and I will arise and pursue after David this night 2 And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed and will make him afraid and all the people that are with him shall flee and I will smite the king onely 3 And I will bring back all the people unto thee the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned so all the people shall be in peace 4 And the saying †Heb. was right in the eyes of c. pleased Absalom well and all the elders of Israel 5 Then said Absalom Call now Hushai the Archite also and let us hear likewise †Heb.
I pray thee a morsel of bread in thine hand 12 And she said As the LORD thy God liveth I have not a cake but an handful of meal in a barrel and a little oyl in a cruse and behold I am gathering two sticks that I may go in and dress it for me and my son that we may eat it and die 13 And Elijah said unto her Fear not go and do as thou hast said but make me thereof a little cake first and bring it unto me and after make for thee and for thy son 14 For thus saith the LORD God of Israel The barrel of meal shall not waste neither shall the cruse of oyl fail until the day that the LORD †Heb. giveth sendeth rain upon the earth 15 And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah and she and he and her house did eat ‖ Or a full year many days 16 And the barrel of meal wasted not neither did the cruse of oyl fail according to the word of the LORD which he spake †Heb. by the hand of by Elijah 17 ¶ And it came to pass after these things that the son of the woman the mistress of the house fell sick and his sickness was so sore that there was no breath left in him 18 And she said unto Elijah What have I to do with thee O thou man of God art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance and to slay my son 19 And he said unto her Give me thy son And he took him out of her bosom and carried him up into a loft where he abode and laid him upon his own bed 20 And he cried unto the LORD and said O LORD my God hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn by slaying her son 21 And he †Heb. measured stretched himself upon the childe three times and cried unto the LORD and said O LORD my God I pray thee let this childs soul come †Heb. into his inward parts into him again 22 And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah and the soul of the childe came into him again and he revived 23 And Elijah took the childe and brought him down out of the chamber into the house and delivered him unto his mother and Elijah said See thy son liveth 24 ¶ And the woman said to Elijah Now by this I know that thou art a man of God and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth CHAP. XVIII 1 In the extremity of samine Elijah sent to Abah meeteth good Obadlah 9 Obadiah bringeth Ahab to Elijah 17 Elijah reproving Ahab by fire from heaven convinceth Baals prophets 41 Elijah by prayer obtaining rain followeth Ahab to Jezreel ANd it came to pass after many days that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year saying Go shew thy self unto Ahab and I will send rain upon the earth 2 And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab and there was a sore famine in Samaria 3 And Ahab called †Heb. Obadiahu Obadiah which was †Heb. over his house the governour of his house now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly 4 For it was so when †Heb. Izebel Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD that Obadiah took an hundred prophets and hid them by fifty in a cave and fed them with bread and water 5 And Ahab said unto Obadiah Go into the land unto all fountains of water and unto all brooks peradventure we may finde grass to save the horses and mules alive †Heb. that we cut not off our selves from the beasts that we leese not all the beasts 6 So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it Ahab went one way by himself and Obadiah went another way by himself 7 ¶ And as Obadiah was in the way behold Elijah met him and he knew him and fell on his lace and said Art thou that my lord Elijah 8 And he answered him I am go tell thy lord Behold Elijah is here 9 And he said What have I sinned that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab to slay me 10 As the LORD thy God liveth there is no nation nor kingdom whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee and when they said He is not there he took an oath of the kingdom and nation that they found thee not 11 And now thou sayest Go tell thy lord Behold Elijah is here 12 And it shall come to pass assoon as I am gone from thee that the spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not and so when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot finde thee he shall slay me but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth 13 Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD how I hid an hundred men of the LORDS prophets by fifty in a cave and fed them with bread and water 14 And now thou sayest Go tell thy lord Behold Elijah is here and he shall slay me 15 And Elijah said As the LORD of hosts liveth before whom I stand I will surely shew my self unto him to day 16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him and Ahab went to meet Elijah 17 ¶ And it came to pass when Ahab saw Elijah that Ahab said unto him Art thou he that troubleth Israel 18 And he answered I have not troubled Israel but thou and thy fathers house in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and thou hast followed Baalim 19 Now therefore send and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty and the prophets of the groves four hundred which eat at Jezebels table 20 So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel 21 And Elijah came unto all the people and said How long halt ye between two ‖ Or. thoughts opinions if the LORD be God follow him but if Baal then follow him And the people answered him not a word 22 Then said Elijah unto the people I even I onely remain a prophet of the LORD but Baals prophets are four hundred and fifty men 23 Let them therefore give us two bullocks and let them choose one bullock for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on wood and put no fire under and I will dress the other bullock and lay it on wood and put no fire under 24 And call ye on the name of your gods and I will call on the name of the LORD and the God that answereth by fire let him be God And all the people answered and said †Heb. The word is good It is well spoken 25 And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal Choose you one bullock for your selves and dress it first for ye are many and call on the name of your gods but put no fire under 26
Solomon his father while he yet lived saying What counsel give ye me to return answer to this people 7 And they spake unto him saying If thou be kinde to this people and please them and speak good words to them they will be thy servants for ever 8 But he forsook the counsel which the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men that were brought up with him that stood before him 9 And he said unto them What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people which have spoken to me saying Ease somewhat the yoke that thy father did put upon us 10 And the young men that were brought up with him spake unto him saying Thus shalt thou answer the people that spake unto thee saying Thy father made our yoke heavy but make thou it somewhat lighter for us thus shalt thou say unto them My little finger shall be thicker then my fathers loyns 11 For whereas my father †Heb. lâ—ded put a heavy yoke upon you I will put more to your yoke my father chastised you with whips but I will chastise you with scorpions 12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day as the king bade saying Come again to me on the third day 13 And the king answered them roughly and king Rehoboam forsook the counsel of the old men 14 And answered them after the advice of the young men saying My father made your yoke heavy but I will add thereto my father chastised you with whips but I will chastise you with scorpions 15 So the king hearkned not unto the people for the cause was of God that the LORD might perform his word which he spake by the * 1 King 11.29 hand of Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat 16 ¶ And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them the people answered the king saying What portion have we in David and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse every man to your tents O Israel and now David see to thine own house So all Israel went to their tents 17 But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah Rehoboam reigned over them 18 Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram that was over the tribute and the children of Israel stoned him with stones that he died but king Rehoboam †Heb. strengthneâ— himself made speed to get him up to his chariot to flee to Jerusalem 19 And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day CHAP. XI 1 Rehoboam raising an army to subdue Israel is forbidden by Shemaiah 5 He strengthneth his kingdom with forts and provision 13 The priests and Levites and such as feared God forsaken by Jeroboam strengthen the kingdom of Judah 18 The wives and children of Rehoboam ANd * 1 King 12.21 c. when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men which were warriours to fight against Israel that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam 2 But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God saying 3 Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon king of Judah and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin saying 4 Thus saith the LORD Ye shall not go up nor fight against your brethren return every man to his house for this thing is done of me And they obeyed the words of the LORD and returned from going against Jeroboam 5 ¶ And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem and built cities for defence in Judah 6 He built even Beth-lehem and Etam and Tekoa 7 And Beth-zur and Shoco and Adullam 8 And Gath and Mareshah and Ziph 9 And Adoraim and Lachish and Azekah 10 And Zorah and Aijalon and Hebron which are in Judah and in Benjamin fenced cities 11 And he fortified the strong holds and put captains in them and store of victual and of oyl and wine 12 And in every several city be put shields and spears and made them exceeding strong having Judah and Benjamin on his side 13 ¶ And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel †Heb. presented themselves to him resorted to him out of all their coasts 14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession came to Judah and Jerusalem for * Chap. 13.9 Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priests office unto the LORD 15 And he ordained him priests for the high places and for the devils and for the calves which he had made 16 And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel came to Jerusalem to sacrifice unto the LORD God of their fathers 17 So they strengthned the kingdom of Judah and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong three years for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon 18 ¶ And Rehoboam took him Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David to wife and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse 19 Which bare him children Jeush and Shamariah and Zaham 20 And after her he took * 1 King 15.2 Maachah the daughter of Absalom which bare him Abijah and Attai and Ziza and Shelomith 21 And Rehoboam loved Maachah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines for he took eighteen wives and threescore concubines and begat twenty and eight sons and threescore daughters 22 And Rehoboam made Abijah the son of Maachah the chief to be ruler among his brethren for he thought to make him king 23 And he dealt wisely and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countreys of Judah and Benjamin unto every fenced city and he gave them victual in abundance and he desired †Heb. a multitude of wives many wives CHAP. XII 1 Rehoboam forsaking the Lord is punished by Shishak 5 He and the princes repenting at the preaching of Shemaiah are delivered from destruction but not from spoil 13 The reign and death of Rehoboam ANd it came to pass when Rehoboam had established the kingdom and had strengthned himself he forsook the law of the LORD and all Israel with him 2 And it came to pass that in the fifth year of king Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem * 1 Kin. 14.14 21. because they had transgressed against the LORD 3 With twelve hundred chariots and threescore thousand hors-men and the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt the Lubims the Sukkiims and the Ethiopians 4 And he took the fenced cities which pertained to Judah and came to Jerusalem 5 ¶ Then came Shemaiah the prophet to Rehoboam and to the princes of Judah that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak and said unto them Thus saith the LORD Ye have forsaken me and therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak 6
of Aaron the priests which were in the fields of the suburbs of their cities in every several city the men that were expressed by name to give portions to all the males among the priests and to all that were reckoned by genealogies among the Levites 20 ¶ And thus did Hezekiah throughout all Judah and wrought that which was goâ—d and right and truth before the LORD his God 21 And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God and in the law and in the commandments to seek his God he did it with all his heart and prospered CHAP XXXII 1 Sennackerib invadinâ— Judah Hezekiah fortifieth himself and encourageth his people 9 Against the blasphemies of Sennacherib by message and letters Hezekiah and Isaiah pray 21 An angel destroyeth the bost of the Assâ—rians to the glory of Hezekiah 24 Hezekiah praying in his sickness God giveth him a signe of recovery 25 He waxing proud is humbled by God 27 His wealth and works 21 His errour in the embassare of Babylon 32 He dying Manasseh succeedeth him AFter * 2 Kin. 18.13 c. Isa 36.1 c. these things and the establishment thereof Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entred into Judah and encamped against the fenced cities and thought †Heb. to break them up to win them for himself 2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come and that †Heb. his face was to war he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem 3 He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city and they did help him 4 So there was gathered much people together who stopt all the fountains and the brook that †Heb. overflowed ran through the midst of the sand saying Why should the kings of Assyria come and finde much water 5 Also he strengthned himself built up all the wall that was broker and raise it up to the towers and another wall without repaired Millo in the city of David made ‖ Or swords or weapons darts and shields in abundance 6 And he set captains of war over the people and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the city and †Heb. spake to their heart spake comfortably to them saying 7 Be strong and couragious be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria nor for all the multitude that is with him for there be nâ—â— with us then with him 8 With him is an * Jer. 17.5 arm of flesh but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battels And the people †Heb. lâ—aned rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah 9 ¶ * 2 Kin. 18.17 After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem but he himself laid siege against Lachish and all his †Heb. dominion power with him unto Hezekiah king of Judah and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem saying 10 Thus saith Sennacherib king of Assyria Whereon do ye trust that ye abide ‖ Or in the strong hold in the siege in Jerusalem 11 Doth not Hezekiah perswade you to give over your selves to die by famine and by thirst saying The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria 12 Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars and commanded Judah and Jerusalem saying Ye shall worship before one altar and burn inâ—ense upon it 13 Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand 14 Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed that could deliver his people out of mine hand that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand 15 Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you not perswade you on this manner neither yâ—t beleeve him for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand and out of the hand of my fathers how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand 16 And his servants spake yet more against the LORD God and against his servant Hezekiah 17 He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel and to speak against him saying As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand 18 Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall to affright them and to trouble them that they might take the city 19 And they spake against the God of Jerusalem as against the gods of the people of the earth which weÌ„re the work of the hands of man 20 And for this cause Hezekiah the king and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz prayed and cried to heaven 21 ¶ * 2 Kin. 19.35 c. And the LORD sent an angel which cut off all the mighty men of valour and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria so he returned with shame of face to his own land And when he was come into the house of his god they that came forth of his own bowels †Heb. made him fall slew him there with the sword 22 Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria and from the hand of all other and guided them on every side 23 And many brought gifts unto the LORD to Jerusalem and †Heb. precious things presents to Hezekiah king of Judah so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thenceforth 24 ¶ * 2 Kin. 20.1 Isa 38.1 In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death and prayed unto the LORD and he spake unto him and he ‖ Or wrought a miracle for him gave him a signe 25 But Hezekiah rendred not again according to the benefit done unto him for his heart was lifted up therefore there was wrath upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem 26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for †Heb. the lifting up the pride of his heart both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah 27 ¶ And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour and he made himself treasuries for silver and for gold and for precious stones and for spices and for shields and for all manner of †Heb. instrumâ—nts of desire pleasant jewels 28 Store-houses also for the increase of corn and wine and oyl and stalls for all manner of beasts and cotes for flocks 29 Moreover he provided him cities and possessions of flocks and

Happy is that people that is in such a case yea happy is that people whose God is the LORD PSAL. CXLV 1 David praiseth God for his fame 8 for his goodness

been before me and before thee of old prophesied both against many countreys and against great kingdoms of war and of evil and of pestilence 9 The prophet which prophesieth of peace when the word of the prophet shall come to pass then shall the prophet be known that the LORD hath truly sent him 10 ¶ Then Hananiah the prophet took the * Ch. 27.2 yoke from off the prophet Jeremiahs neck and brake it 11 And Hananiah spake in the presence of all the people saying Thus saith the LORD Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years And the prophet Jeremiah went his way 12 ¶ Then the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the prophet after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah saying 13 Go and tell Hananiah saying Thus saith the LORD Thou hast broken the yokes of wood but thou shalt make for them yokes of iron 14 For thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and they shall serve him and I have given him the beasts of the field also 15 ¶ Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet Hear now Hananiah The LORD hath not sent thee but thou makest this people to trust in a lie 16 Therefore thus saith the LORD Behold I will cast thee from off the face of the earth this year thou shalt die because thou hast taught * Deu. 12.5 Ch 2â— 32 †Heb. â—â—vâ—â—t rebellion against the LORD 17 So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh moneth CHAP. XXIX 1 Jeremiah sendeth a letter to the captives in Babylon to be quiet there 8 and not to beleeve the dreams of their prophets 10 and that they shall return with grace after seventy years 15 He foretelleth the destruction of the rest for their disobedience 20 He sheweth the fearful end of Ahab and Zedekiah two lying prophets 24 Shemaiah writeth a letter against Jeremiah 30 Jeremiah reaâ—eth his doom NOw these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives and to the priests and to the prophets and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon 2 Alter that * 2 Kin. 24.12 c. image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up 8 ¶ Wherefore at that time certain Caldeans came â—â—â—r and accused the Jews 9 They spake and said to the king Nebuchadnezzar O king live for ever 10 Thou O king hast made a decree that every man that shall hear the sound of the cornet flute harp sackbut psaltery and dulcimer and all kinds of musick shall fall down and worship the golden image 11 And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth that he should be cast into the midst of a burning fierâ— furnace 12 There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of Babylon Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego these men O king †Cald. have sâ—t never and upon thâ—s have not regarded thee they serve not thy gods nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up 13 ¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego then they brought these men before the king 14 Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them Is it ‖ Or of purpose at Ex. 21.23 true O Shadrath Meshach and Abed-nego do not ye serve my gods nor worship the golden image which I have set up 15 Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet flute harp sackbut psaltery and dulcimer and all kinds of musick ye fall down and worship the image which I have made well but if ye worship not ye shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands 16 Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego answered and said to the king O Nebuchadnezzar we are not careful to answer thee in this matter 17 If it be so our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace and he will deliver us out of thine hand O king 18 But if not be it known unto thee O king that we will not serve thy gods nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up 19 ¶ Then was Nebuchadnezzar †Cald. filled full of fury and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego therefore he spake and commanded that they should hear the furnace one seven times more then it was wont to be heat 20 And he commanded the †Cald. mighty of strengh most mighty men that were in his army to binde Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace 21 Then these men were bound in their ‖ Or mantles coats their hosen and their ‖ Or turbants hats and their other garments and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace 22 Therefore because the kings †Cald. word commandment was urgent and the furnace exceeding hot the ‖ Or spark flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego 23 And these three men Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace 24 Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonied and rose up in haste and spake and said unto his ‖ Or governours counsellours Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire They answered and said unto the king True O king 25 He answered and said Lo I see four men loose walking in the midst of the fire and †Cald. â—oâ—re is no â—urt in â—com they have no hurt and the form of the fourth is like the son of God 26 ¶ Then Nebuchadnezzar came near to the †Cald. 〈◊〉 mouth of the burning fiery furnace and spake and said Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego ye servants of the most high God come forth and come hither Then Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego came forth of the midst of the fire 27 And the princes governours and captains and the kings counsellours being gathered together saw these men upon whose bodies the fire had no power nor was an hair of their head singed neither were their coats changed nor the smell of fire had passed on them 28 Then Nebuchadnezzar spake and said Blessed be the God of Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego who hath sent his angel and delivered his servants that trusted in him and have changed the kings word and yeelded their bodies that they might not serve nor worship any god except their own God 29 Therefore †Gold a decree is made by me I make a decree That every people nation and language which speak †Cald. â—â—our â— any thing amiss against the God of Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego shall be * Ch. 2.5 †Cald. made pieces cut in pieces and their houses shall be made a dunghil because there is no other god that can deliver after this sort 30 Then the king †Cald. made to prosper promoted Shadrach Meshach and Abed-nego in the province of Babylon CHAP. IV. 1 Nebuchadnezzar confesseth Gods kingdom 4 maketh relation of his dream which the Magitians could not interpret 8 Daniel beareth the dream 19 He interprets it 28 The story of the event NEbuchadnezzar the king unto all people nations and languages that dwell in all the earth Peace be multiplied unto you 2 †Cald. It was feemly before me I thought it good to shew the signs and wonders that the high God hath wrought toward me 3 How great are his signs and how mighty are his wonders his kingdom is * Ch. 2.44 an everlasting kingdom and his dominion is from generation to generation 4 ¶ I Nebuchadnezzar was at rest in mine house and flourishing in my palace 5 I saw a dream which made me afraid and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me 6 Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream 7 Then came in the magicians the astrologers the Caldeans and the soothsayers and I told the dream before them but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof 8 ¶ But at the last Daniel came in before me whose name was Belteshazzar according to the name of my God and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods and before him I told the dream saying 9 O Belteshazzar * Ch. 2.48 master of the magicians Because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee and no secret troubleth thee tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen and the interpretation thereof 10 Thus were the visions of mine head in my bed †Cald. I was seeing I saw and behold a tree in the midst of the earth and the height thereof was great 11 The tree grew and was strong and the height thereof reached unto heaven and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth 12 The leaves thereof were fair and the fruit thereof much and in it was meat for all the beasts
Or interdict decree that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days save of thee O king he shall be cast into the den of lions 8 Now O king establish the decree and signe the writing that it be not changed according to the * Esth 1.19 and 8,8 law of the Medes and Persians which †Cald. passeth not altereth not 9 Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree 10 ¶ Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed he went into his house and his windows being open in his chamber * 1 Kin. 8.48 toward Jerusalem he kneeled upon his knees * Ps 55.17 three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God as he did aforetime 11 Then these men assembled and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God 12 Then they came near and spake before the king concerning the kings decree Hast thou not signed a decree that every man that shall ask a petition of any God of man within thirty days save of thee O king shall be cast into the den of lions The king answered and said The thing is true according to the law of the Medes and Pertians which altereth not 13 Then answered they and said before the king That Daniel which is of the children of the captivity of Judah regardeth not thee O king nor the decree that thou hast signed but maketh his petition three times a day 14 Then the king when he heard these words was sore displeased with himself and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him 15 Then these men assembled unto the king and said unto the king Know O king that the law of the Medes and Persians is that no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed 16 Then the king commanded and they brought Daniel and cast him into the den of lions now the king spake and said unto Daniel Thy God whom thou servest continually he will deliver thee 17 And a stone was brought and laid upon the mouth of the den and the king sealed it with his own signet and with the signet of his lords that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel 18 ¶ Then the king went to his palace and passed the night fasting neither were ‖ Or table instruments of musick brought before him and his sleep went from him 19 Then the king arose very early in the morning and went in haste unto the den of lions 20 And when he came to the den he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel and the king spake and said to Daniel O Daniel servant of the living God is thy God whom thou servest continually able to deliver thee from the lions 21 Then said Daniel unto the king O king live for ever 22 My God hath sent his angel and hath shut the lions mouths that they have not hurt me forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me and also before thee O king have I done no hurt 23 Then was the king exceeding glad for him and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den so Daniel was taken up out of the den and no manner of hurt was found upon him because he beleeved in his God 24 ¶ And the king commanded and they brought those men which had accused Daniel and they cast them into the den of lions them their children and their wives and the lions had the mastery of them and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den 25 ¶ Then king Darius wrote unto all people nations and languages that dwell in all the earth Peace be multiplied unto you 26 I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel for he is the living God and stedfast for ever and his kingdom that which shall not be * Ch. 2.44 and 4.3 7 14.2â— Luk. 1.33 destroyed and his dominion shall be even unto the end 27 He delivereth and rescueth and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth who hath delivered Daniel from the †Heb. band power of the lions 28 So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius and in the reign of * Ch. 1.21 Cyrus the Persian CHAP. VII 1 Daniels vision of four beasts 9 of Gods kingdom 15 The interpretation thereof IN the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel †Cald. saâ—â— had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed then he wrote the dream and told the sum of the ‖ Or words matters 2 Daniel spake and said I saw in my vision by night and behold the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea 3 And four great beasts came up from the sea diverse one from another 4 The first was like a lion and had eagles wings and I beheld till the wings thereof were pluckt ‖ Or wherewith and it was lifted up from the earth and made stand upon the feet as a man a mans heart was given to it 5 And behold another beast a second like to a bear and ‖ Or it raised up one dominion it raised up it self on one side and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it and they said thus unto it Arise devour much flesh 6 After this I beheld and lo another like a leopard which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl the beast had also four heads and dominion was given to it 7 After this I saw in the night-visions and behold a fourth beast dreadful and terrible and strong exceedingly and it had great iron teeth it devoured and brake in pieces and stamped the residue with the feet of it and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it and it had ten horns 8 I considered the horns and behold there came up among them another little horn before whom there were three of the first horns pluckt up by the roots and behold in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man and a mouth speaking great things 9 ¶ I beheld till the thrones were cast down and the Ancient of days did sit whose garment was white as snow and the hair of his head like the pure wooli his throne was like the fiery flame and his wheels as burning fire 10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him * Rev. 5. â—â— thousand thousands ministred unto him ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him the judgement was set and the * Rev. 17.12 books were opened 11 I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake I beheld even till the beast was slain and his body destroyed and given to the burning flame 12 As concerning the rest of the beasts they had their dominion taken away yet
peaceable for all men 9 Both by changing our purposes and always judging things that are evident with more equal proceeding 10 For Aman a Macedonian the son of Amadatha being indeed a stranger from the Persian bloud and far distant from our goodness and as a stranger received of us 11 Had so far forth obtained the favour that we shew toward every nation as that he was called our father and was continually honoured of all men as the next person unto the king 12 But he not bearing his great dignity went about to deprive us of our kingdom and life 13 Having by manifold and cunning deceits sought of us the destruction as well of Mardocheus who saved our life and continually procured our good as also of blameless Esther partaker of our kingdom with their whole nation 14 For by these means he thought finding us destitute of friends to have translated the kingdom of the Persians to the Macedonians 15 But we finde that the Jews whom this wicked wretch hath delivered to utter destruction are no evil-doers but live by most just laws 16 And that they be children of the most High and most Mighty living God who hath ‖ Or prosperth ordered the kingdom both unto us and to our progenitours in the most excellent manner 17 Wherefore ye shall do well not to put in execution the letters sent unto you by Aman the son of Amadatha 18 For he that was the worker of these things is hanged at the gates of Susa with all his family God who ruleth all things speedily rendring vengeance to him according to his deserts 19 Therefore ye shall publish the copy of this letter in all places that the Jews may freely live after their own laws 20 And ye shall aid them that even the same day being the thirteenth day of the twelfth moneth Adar they may be avenged on them who in the time of their affliction shall set upon them 21 For Almighty God hath turned to joy unto them the day wherein the chosen people should have perished 22 You shall therefore among your solemn feasts keep it an high day with all feasting 23 That both now and hereafter there may be safety to us and the well-affected Persians but to those which do conspire against us a memorial of destruction 24 Therefore every city and countrey whatsoever which shall not do according to these things shall be destroyed without mercy with fire and sword and shall be made not onely unpassable for men but also most hateful to wilde beasts and fowls for ever ¶ The WISDOM of SOLOMON CHAP. I. 2 To whom God sheweth himself 4 and wisdom her self 6 An evil speaker cannot his hid 12 We procure our own destruction 13 For God treated not death LOve * 1 King 3.3 Isa 56.1 righteousness ye that be judges of the earth think of the Lord with a good heart and in simplicity of heart seek him 2 For he will be found of them that tempt him not and sheweth himself unto such as do not * Deut. 4.29 2 Chr. 15.4 distrust him 3 For froward thoughts separate from God and his power when it is tried ‖ Or maketh manifest reproveth the unwise 4 For into a malicious soul wisdom shall not enter nor dwell in the body that is subject unto sin 5 * Jer. 4.22 For the holy spirit of discipline will flee deceit and remove from thoughts that are without understanding and ‖ Or is rebuked or sâ—with it sdf will not abide when unrighteousness cometh in 6 For wisdom is a * Gal. 5.22 loving spirit and will not acquit a blasphemer of his ‖ Or lâ—â—â— words for God is witnes of his reins and a true beholder of his heart and a hearer of his tongue 7 For the Spirit of the Lord filleth the world and that which ‖ Or upholdeth containeth all things hath knowledge of the voice 8 Therefore he that speaketh unrighteous things cannot be hid neither shall vengeance when it punisheth pass by him 9 For inquisition shall be made into the counsels of the ungodly and the found of his words shall come unto the Lord for the ‖ Or reproving manifestation of his wicked deeds 10 For the ear of jealousie heareth all things and the noise of murmurings is not hid 11 Therefore beware of murmuring which is unprofitable and refrain your tongue from backbiting for there is no word so secret that shall go for nought and the mouth that ‖ Or sandereth belieth slayeth the soul 12 Seek not death in the errour of your life and pull not upon your selves * Deut. 4.23 24. destruction with the works of your hands 13 For God made not death neither hath he pleasure in the destruction of the living 14 For he created all things that they might have their being and the generations of the world â—ere healthful and there is no poison of destruction in them nor the kingdom of death upon the earth 15 For righteousness is immortal 16 But ungodly men with their works and words called it to them for when they thought to have it their friend they consumed to nought and made a covenant with it because they are worthy to take part with it CHAP. II. 1 The wicked think this life short 5 and of no other after this 6 Therefore they will take their pleasure in this 10 and conspire against the just 21 What that is which doth blinde them FOr the ungodly said reasoning with themselves but not aright * Job 7.1 Our life is short and tedious * Mat. 22.23 1 Cor. 15.32 and in the death of a man there is no remedy neither was there any man known to have returned from the grave 2 For we are born at all adventure and we shall be hereafter as though we had never been for the breath in our nostrils is as smoke and a little spark in the moving of our heart 3 Which being extinguished our body shall be turned into ashes and our spirit shall vanish as the ‖ Or â—â—â—ist soft air 4 And our name shall be forgotten in time and no man shall have our works in remembrance and our life shall pass away as the trace of a cloud and shall be dispersed as a mist that is driven away with the beams of the sun and ‖ Or oppressed overcome with the heat thereof 5 * 1 Chr. 29.15 For our time is a very shadow that passeth away and after our end there is no returning for ‖ Or be it is fast sealed so that no man cometh again 6 Come on therefore let us enjoy the good things * Isa 22.13 35 12. 1 Cor. 15.32 that are present and let us ‖ Or â—â—nestly speedily use the creatures like as in youth 7 Let us fill our selves with costly wine and ointments and set no flower of the spring pass by us 8 Let us crown our selves with rose-buds before they be withered

They stood against their enemies and were avenged of their adversaries 4 When they were thirsty they called upon thee and water was given them out of the flinty rock and their thirst was quenched out of the hard stone 5 For by what things their enemies were punished by the same they in their need were benefited 6 For in stead of a fountain of a perpetual running river troubled with foul bloud 7 For a manifest reproof of that commandment whereby the infants were slain thou gavest unto them abundance of water by a means which they hoped not for 8 Declaring by that thrist then * Exod. 7.20 how thou hadst punished their adversaries 9 For when they were tried albeit but in mercy chastised they knew how the ungodly were judged in wrath and tormented thirsting in another manner then the just 10 For these thou didst admonish and try as a father but the other as a severe king thou didst condemn and punish 11 Whether they were absent or present they were vexed alike 12 For a double grief came upon them and a groaning for the remembrance of things past 13 For when they heard by their own punishments the other to be benefited they ‖ Or perceived had some feeling of the Lord. 14 For whom they rejected with scorn when he was long before thrown out at the casting forth of the infants him in the end when they saw what came to pass they admired 15 But for the foolish devices of their wickedness wherewith being deceived they worshipped serpents void of reason and vile beasts thou didst send a multitude of unreasonable beasts upon them for vengeance 16 That they might know that wherewithal a man sinneth by the same also shall he be punished 17 For thy almighty hand that made the world of matter without form wanted not means to send among them a multitude of bears or fierce lions 18 Or unknown wilde beasts full of rage newly created breathing out either a fiery vapour or filthy sents of scattered smoke or shooting horrible sparkles out of their eyes 19 Whereof not onely the harm might dispatch them at once but also the terrible sight utterly destroy them 20 Yea and without these might they have faln down with one blast being persecuted of vengeance and scattered abroad through the breath of thy power but thou hast ordered all things in measure and number and weight 21 For thou canst shew thy great strength at all times when thou wilt and who may withstand the power of thine arm 22 For the whole world before thee is as a ‖ Or little weight little grain of the balance yea as a drop of the morning dew that falleth down upon the earth 23 But thou hast mercy upon all for thou canst do all things and winkest at the sins of men because they should amend 24 For thou lovest all the things that are and abhorrest nothing which thou hast made for never wouldest thou have made any thing if thou hadst hated it 25 And how could any thing have endured if it had not been thy will or been preserved if not called by thee 26 But thou sparest all for they are thine O Lord thou lover of souls CHAP. XII 2 God did not destroy those of Chanaan all at once 12 If he had done so who could control him 19 But by sparing them be taught us 27 They were punished with their gods FOr thine uncorruptible Spirit is in all things 2 Therefore chastnest thou them by little and little that offend and warnest them by putting them in remembrance wherein they have offended that leaving their wickedness they may beleeve on thee O Lord. 3 For it was thy will to destroy by the hands of our fathers both those ‖ Or ancient old inhabitants of thy holy land 4 Whom thou hatedst for doing most odious works of ‖ Or sorceries witchcrafts and wicked sacrifices 5 And also those merciless murderers of children and devourers of mans flesh and the feasts of bloud 6 With their priests out of the midst of their idolatrous crue and the parents that killed with their own
praise him therewith 23 Draw near unto me you unlearned and dwell in the house of learning 24 Wherefore are you slow and what say you of these things seeing your souls are very thirsty 25 I opened my mouth and said * Isai 55.1 Buy her for your selves without money 26 Put your neck under the yoke and let your soul receive instruction she is hard at hand to finde 27 * Chap. 6.19 Behold with your eyes how that I have had but little labour and have gotten unto me much rest 28 Get learning with a great sum of money get much gold by her 29 Let your soul rejoyce in his mercy and be not ashamed of his praise 30 Work your work betimes and in his time he will give you your reward ¶ BARUCH CHAP. I. 1 Baruch wrote a book in Babylon 5 The Jews there wept at the reading of it 7 They send money and the book to the brethren at Jerusalem ANd these are the words of the book which Baruch the son of Nerias the son of Maasias the son of Sedecias the son of Asadias the son of Chelcias wrote in Babylon 2 In the fifth year and in the seventh day of the moneth what time as the Caldeans took Jerusalem and burnt it with fire 3 And Baruch did read the words of this book in the hearing of Jechonias the son of ‖ Or Joacim Joachim king of Juda and in the ears of all the people that came to hear the book 4 And in the hearing of the nobles and of the kings sons and in the hearing of the elders and of all the people from the lowest unto the highest even of all them that dwelt at Babylon by the river Sud 5 Whereupon they wept fasted ‖ Or and vowed vows and prayed before the Lord. 6 They made also a collection of money according to every mans power 7 And they sent it to Jerusalem unto ‖ Or Joacim Joachim the high priest the son of Chescias son of Salom and to the priests and to all the people which were sound with him at Jerusalem 8 At the same time when he received the vessels of the house of the Lord that were carried out of the temple to return them into the land of Juda the tenth day of the moneth Sivan namely silver vessels which Sedecias the son of Josias king of Juda had made 9 After that Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had carried away Jechonias and the princes and the ‖ Or prisoners captives and the mighty men and the people of the land from Jerusalem and brought them unto Babylon 10 And they said behold we have sent you money to buy you burnt-offerings and sin-offerings and incense and prepare ye †Gr corruptly for minâ—ba manna and offer upon the altar of the Lord our God 11 And pray for the life of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon and for the life of Balthalar his son that their days may be upon earth as the days of heaven * meat-offering 12 And the Lord will give us strength and lighten our eyes and we shall live under the shadow of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon and under the shadow of Balthasar his son and we shall serve them many days and finde favour in their sight 13 Pray for us also unto the Lord our God for we have sinned against the Lord our God and unto this day the fury of the Lord and his wrath is not turned from us 14 And ye shall read this book which we have sent unto you to make confession in the house of the Lord upon the feasts and solemn days 15 And ye shall say * Chap. â— 6 To the Lord our God belongeth righteousness but unto us the confusion of faces as it is coms to pass this day unto them of Juda and to the inhabitants of Jerulalem 16 And to our kings and to our princes and to our priests and to our prophets and to our fathers 17 For we have * Dan. 9.5 sinned before the Lord 18 And disobeyed him and have not hearkned unto the voice of the Lord our God to walk in the commandments that he gave us openly 19 Since the day that the Lord brought our forefathers out of the land of Egypt unto this present day we have been disobedient unto the Lord our God and we have been negligent in not hearing his voice 20 * Deut. 28.15 Wherefore the evils cleaved unto us and the curse which the Lord appointed by Moses his servant at the time that he brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt to give us a land that floweth with milk and honey like as it is to see this day 21 Nevertheless we have not hearkned unto the voice of the Lord our God according unto all the words of the prophets whom he sent unto us 22 But every man followed the imagination of his own wicked heart to serve strange gods and to do evil in the sight of the Lord our God CHAP. II. The prayer and confession which the Jews at Babylon made and sent in that book unto the brethreâ—◠〈◊〉 Jerusalem THerefore the Lord hath made good his word which he pronounced against us and against our judges that judged Israel and against our kings and against our princes and against the men of Israel and Juda. 2 To bring upon us great plagues such as never hapned under the whose heaven as it came to pass in Jerusalem according to the things that were written in the law of Moses 3 That a man should * Deut. 28.53 eat the flesh of his own son and the flesh of his own daughter 4 Moreover he hath delivered them to be in subjection to all the kingdoms that are round about us to be as a reproach and desolation among all the people round about where the Lord hath scattered them 5 Thus we †Gr. were beneath and not above were cast down and not exalted becaused we have sinned against the Lord our God and have not been obedient unto his voice 6 * Ch. 1.15 To the Lord our God appertaineth righteousness but unto us and to our fathers open shame as appeareth this day 7 For all these plagues are come upon us which the Lord hath pronounced against us 8 Yet have we not prayed before the Lord that we might turn every one from the imaginations of his wicked heart 9 Wherefore the Lord watched over us for evil and the Lord hath brought it upon us for the Lord is righteous in all his works which he hath commanded us 10 Yet we have not hearkned unto his voice to walk in the commandments of the Lord that he hath set before us 11 * Dan. 9.15 And now O Lord God of Israel that hast brought thy people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and high arm and with signs and with wonders and with great power and hast gotten thy self a name as appeareth this day 12 O Lord our

Casleu we though it necessary to certifie you thereof that ye also might keep it as the feast of the tabernacles and of the fire which was given us when Neemias offered sacrifice after that he had builded the temple the altar 19 For when our fathers were led into Persia the priests that were then devout took the fire of the altar privily and hid it in a hollow place of a pit without water where they kept it sure so that the place was unknown to all men 20 Now after many years when it pleased God Neemias being sent from the king of Persia did send of the posterity of those priests that had hid it to the fire But when they told us they found no fire but thick water 21 Then commanded he them to draw it up and to bring it and when the sacrifices were laid on Neemias commanded the priests to sprinkle the wood and the things laid thereupon with the water 22 When this was done and the time came that the sun shone which afore was hid in the cloud there was a great fire kindled so that every man marvelled 23 And the priests made a prayer whilest the sacrifice was consuming I say both the priests and all the rest Jonathan beginning and the rest answering thereunto as Neemias did 24 And the prayer was after this manner O Lord Lord God Creatour of all things who art fearful and strong and righteous and merciful and the onely and gracious King 25 The onely giver of all things the onely just almighty and everlasting thou that deliverest Israel from all trouble and didst choose the fathers and sanctifie them 26 Receive the sacrifice for thy whole people Israel and preserve thine own portion and sanctifie it 27 Gather those together that are scattered from us deliver them that serve among the heathen look upon them that are despised and abhorred and let the heathen know that thou art our God 28 Punish them that oppress us and with pride do us wrong 29 Plant thy people again in thy holy place as Moses hath spoken 30 And the Priests sung psalms of thanksgiving 31 Now when the sacrifice was consumed Neemias commanded the water that was left to be poured on the great stones 32 When this was done there was kindled a flame but it was consumed by the light that shined from the altar 33 So when this matter was known it was told the king of Persia that in the place where the priests that were led away had hid the fire there appeared water and that ‖ Or Neemias his company Neemias had purified the sacrifices therewith 34 Then tâ—â— king inclosing the place made it holy after he had tried the matter 35 And the king took many gifts and bestowed thereof on those whom he would gratifie 36 And Neemias called this thing Naphthat which is as much as to say a cleansing but many men call it Nephi CHAP. II. 1 What Jeremy the prophet did 5 How be bid the tabernacle the ark and the altar 13 What Neemias and Judas wrote 20 What fason wrote in five books 25 And how those were abridged by the authour of this book IT is also found in the records that Jeremy the prophet commanded them that were carried away to take of the fire as it hath been signified 2 And how that the prophet having given them the law charged them not to forget the commandments of the Lord and that they should not err in their minds when they see images of silver and gold with their ornaments 3 And with other such speeches exhorted he them that the law should not depart from their hearts 4 It was also contained in the same writing that the prophet being warned of God commanded the tabernacle and the ark to go with him as he went forth into the mountain where Moses climbed up and saw the heritage of God 5 And when Jeremy came thither he found an hollow cave wherein he laid the tabernacle and the ark and the altar of incense and so stopped the door 6 And some of those that followed him came to mark the way but they could not finde it 7 Which when Jeremy perceived he blamed them saying As for that place it shall be unknown until the time that God gather his people again together and receive them unto mercy 8 Then shall the Lord shew them these things and the glory of the Lord shall appear and the cloud also as it was shewed under Moses and as when Solomon delired that the place might be honourably sanctified 9 It was also declared that he being wise offered the sacrifice of dedication and of the finishing of the temple 10 And as when Moses prayed unto the Lord the fire came down from heaven and consumed the sacrifices even so prayed Solomon also and the fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt-offerings 11 And Moses said Because the sin-offering was not to be eaten it was consumed 12 So Solomon kept those eight days 13 The same things also were reported in the writings and commentaries of Neemias and how he founding a library gathered together the acts of the kings and the prophets and of David and the epistles of the kings concerning the holy gifts 14 In like manner also Judas gathered together all those things that were lost by reason of the war we had and they remain with us 15 Wherefore if ye have need thereof send some to fetch them unto you 16 Whereas we then are about to celebrate the purification we have written unto you and ye shall do well if ye keep the same days 17 †Gr. Now God it is that saved all his people and rendred the heritage and the kingdom and the priesthood and the sanctuary as he promised in the law for we hope in God that he will shortly c. We hope also that the God that delivered all his people gave them all an heritage the kingdom and the priesthood the sanctuary 18 As he promised in the law will shortly have mercy upon us and gather us together out of every land under heaven into the holy place for he hath delivered us out of great troubles hath purified the place 19 Now as concerning Judas Maccabeus and his brethren and the purification of the great temple and the dedication of the altar 20 And the wars against Antiochus Epiphanes and Eupator his son 21 And the manifest signs that came from heaven unto those that behaved themselves manfully to their honour for Judaism so that being but a sew they overcame the whole countrey and chased barbarous multitudes 22 And recovered again the temple renowned all the world over and freed the city and upheld the laws which were going down the Lord being gracious unto them with all favour 23 All these things I say being declared by Jason of Cyrene in five books we will assay to abridge in one volume 24 For considering the infinite number and the
law The Jews therefore said unto him It is not lawful for us to put any man to death 32 * Mat. 20.19 That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which he spake signifying what death he should die 33 * Mat. 27.11 Then Pilate entred into the judgement-hall again and called Jesus and said unto him Art thou the king of the Jews 34 Jesus answered him Sayest thou this thing of thy self or did others tell it thee of me 35 Pilate answered Am I a Jew Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me What hast thou done 36 Jesus answered My kingdom is not of this world if my kingdom were of this world then would my servants fight that I should not be delivered to the Jews but now is my kingdom not from hence 37 Pilate therefore said unto him Art thou a king then Jesus answered Thou sayest that I am a king To this end was I born and for this cause came I into the world that I should bear witness unto the truth Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice 38 Pilate saith unto him What is truth And when he had said this he went out again unto the Jews and saith unto them I finde in him no fault at all 39 * Mat. 27.15 But ye have a custom that I should release unto you one at the pass-over will ye therefore that I release unto you the king of the Jews 40 * Act. 3.14 Then cried they all again saying Plot this man but Barabbas Now Barabbas was a robber CHAP. XIX 1 Christ is scourged crowned with thorns and beaten 4 Pilate is desirous to release him but being overcome with the outrage of the Jews he delivered him to be crucified 23 They cast lots for his garments 26 He commendeth his mother to John 28 He dieth 31 His side is pierced 38 He is buried by Joseth and Nicodemus THen * Mat. 27.26 Pilate therefore took Jesus and scourged him 2 And the souldiers platted a crown of thorns and put it on his head and they put on him a purple robe 3 And said Hail king of the Jews and they smote him with their hands 4 Pilate therefore went forth again and saith unto them Behold I bring him forth to you that ye may know that I finde no fault in him 5 Then came Jesus forth wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe And Pilate saith vnto them Behold the man 6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him they cried out saying Crucifie him crucifie him Pilate saith unto them Take ye him and crucifie him for I finde no fault in him 7 The Jews answered him We have a law and by our law he ought to die because he made himself the Son of God 8 ¶ When Pilate therefore heard that saying he was the more afraid 9 And went again into the judgement-hall and saith unto Jesus Whence art thou but Jesus gave him no answer 10 Then saith Pilate unto him Speakest thou not unto me knowest thou not that I have power to crucifie thee and have power to release thee 11 Jesus answered Thou couldest have no power at all against me except it were given thee from above therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin 12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him but the Jews cried out saying If thou let this man go thou art not Cesars friend whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Cesar 13 ¶ When Pilate therefore heard that saying he brought Jesus forth and sat down in the judgement-seat in a place that is called the Pavement but in the Hebrew Gabbatha 14 And it was the preparation of the pass-over and about the sixth hour and he saith unto the Jews Behold your king 15 But they cried out Away with him away with him crucifie him Pilate saith unto them Shall I crucifie your king The chief priests answered We have no king but Cesar 16 * Mat. 27.31 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified And they took Jesus and led him away 17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a scull which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha 18 Where they crucified him and two other with him on either side one and Jesus in the midst 19 ¶ And Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS 20 This title then read many of the Jews for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city and it was written in Hebrew and Greek and Latine 21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate Write not The king of the Jews but that he said I am king of the Jews 22 Pilate answered What I have written I have written 23 ¶ * Mat. 27.35 Then the souldiers when they had crucified Jesus took his garments and made four parts to every souldier a part and also his coat now the coat was without seam ‖ Or wrought woven from the top throughout 24 They said therefore among themselves Let us not rend it but cast lots for it whose it shall be that the scripture might be fulfilled which saith * Ps 22.18 They parted my raiment among them and for my vesture they did cast lots These things therefore the souldiers did 25 ¶ Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother and his mothers sister Mary the wife of ‖ Or Clopas Cleophas and Mary Magdalene 26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother and the disciple standing by whom he loved he saith unto his mother Woman behold thy son 27 Then saith he to the disciple Behold thy mother And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home 28 ¶ After this Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished * Psa 69.21 that the scripture might be fulfilled saith I thirst 29 Now there was set a vessel full of vineger and they filled a spunge with vineger and put it upon hyssop and put it to his mouth 30 When Jesus therefore had received the vineger he said It is finished and he bowed his head and gave up the ghost 31 The Jews therefore because it was the preparation that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath-day for that sabbath-day was an high day besought Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away 32 Then came the souldiers and brake the legs of the first and of the other which was crucified with him 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was dead already they brake not his legs 34 But one of the souldiers with a spear pierced his side and forthwith came there out bloud and water 35 And he that saw it bare record and his record is true and he knoweth that he saith true that ye might beleeve 36 For these things were done * Ex. 12.46 Num.
resurrection of the dead 22 For as in Adam all die even so in Christ shall all be made alive 23 But * 1 Thess 4.15 every man in his own order Christ the first-fruits afterward they that are Christs at his coming 24 Then cometh the end when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God even the Father when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power 25 For he must reign * Psal 110.1 till he hath put all enemies under his feet 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death 27 For he * Psal 8.6 hath put all things under his feet But when he saith all things are put under him it is manifest that he is excepted which did put all things under him 28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him that God may be all in all 29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead if the dead rise not at all why are they then baptized for the dead 30 And why stand we in jeopardy every hour 31 I protest by ‖ Some read our your rejoycing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord I die daily 32 If ‖ Or to speak after the manner of men after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus what advantageth it me if the dead rise not * Isa 22.23 let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die 33 Be not deceived evil communications corrupt good manners 34 Awake to righteousness and sin not for some have not the knowledge of God I speak this to your shame 35 But some man will say How are the dead raised up and with what body do they come 36 Thou fool that which thou sowest is not quickned exceptit die 37 And that which thou sowest thou sowest not that body that shall be but bare grain it may chance of wheat or of some other grain 38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him and to every seed his own body 39 All flesh is not the same flesh but there is one kinde of flesh of men another flesh of beasts another of fishes and another of birds 40 There are also celestial bodies and bodies terrestrial but the glory of the celestial is one and the glory of the terrestrial is another 41 There is one glory of the sun and another glory of the moon and another glory of the stars for one star differeth from another star in glory 42 So also is the resurrection of the dead It is sown in corruption it is raised in incorruption 43 It is sown in dishonour it is raised in glory it is sown in weakness it is raised in power 44 It is sown a natural body it is raised a spiritual body There is a natural body and there is a spiritual body 45 And so it is written The first man Adam * Gen. 1.7 was made a living soul the last Adam was made a quickning spirit 46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual but that which is natural and afterward that which is spiritual 47 The first man is of the earth earthy the second man is the Lord from heaven 48 As is the earthy such are they also that are earthy and as is the heavenly such are they also that are heavenly 49 And as we have born the image of the earthy we shall also bear the image of the heavenly 50 Now this I say brethren that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God neither doth corruption inherit incorruption 51 Behold I shew you a mystery We shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed 52 In a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last * Matth. 24.31 1 Thess 4.16 trump for the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptible and we shall be changed 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption and this mortal shall have put on immortality then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written * Isa 25.8 Hos 13.14 Death is swallowed up in victory 55 O death where is thy sting O ‖ Or hell grave where is thy victory 56 The sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law 57 But thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ 58 Therefore my beloved brethren be ye stedfast unmoveable always abounding in the work of the Lord forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. CHAP. XVI 1 He exhorteth them to relieve the want of the brethren at Jerusalem 10 commendeth Timothy 13 and after friendly admonitions 16 shutteth up his epistle with divers salutations NOw concerning the collection for the saints as I have given order to the churches of Galatia even so do ye 2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store as God hath prospered him that there be no gatherings when I come 3 And when I come whomsoever you shall approve by your letters them will I send to bring your †Gr. â—ife liberality unto Jerusalem 4 And if it be meet that I go also they shall go with me 5 Now I will come unto you when I shall pass through Macedonia for I do pass through Macedonia 6 And it may be that I will abide yea and winter with you that ye may bring me on my journey whithersoever I go 7 For I will not see you now by the way but I trust to tarry a while with you if the Lord permit 8 But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost 9 For a great door and effectual is opened unto me and there are many adversaries 10 Now if Timotheus come see that he may be with you without fear for he worketh the work of the Lord as I also do 11 Let no man therefore despise him but conduct him forth in peace that he may come unto me for I look for him with the brethren 12 As touching our brother Apollos I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren but his will was not at all to come at this time but he will come when he shall have convenient time 13 Watch ye stand fast in the faith quit you like men be strong 14 Let all your things be done with charity 15 I beseech you brethren ye know the house of Stephanas that it is the first-fruits of Achaia and that they have addicted themselves to the ministery of the saints 16 That ye submit your selves unto such and to every one that helpeth with us and laboureth 17 I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied 18 For they have refreshed my spirit and yours therefore acknowledge ye

II. 1 Directions given unto Titus both for his doctrine and life 9 Of the duty of servants and in general of all christians BUt speak thou the things which become sound doctrine 2 That the aged men be ‖ Or vigilant sober grave temperate sound in faith in charity in patience 3 The aged women likewise that they be in behaviour as becometh ‖ Or holy women holiness not ‖ Or makâ—-bates false accusers not given to much wine teachers of good things 4 That they may teach the young women to be ‖ Or wise sober to love their husbands to love their children 5 To be discreet chaste keepers at home good * Eph. 5.23 obedient to their own husbands that the word of God be not blasphemed 6 Young men likewise exhort to be ‖ Or discreet sober-minded 7 In all things shewing thy self a pattern of good works in doctrine shewing uncorruptness gravity sincerity 8 Sound speech that cannot be condemned that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed having no evil thing to say of you 9 Exhort * Eph. 6.5 Col. 3.22 1 Pet. 2.18 servants to be obedient unto their own masters and to please them well in all things not ‖ Or gain-saying answering again 10 Not purloining but shewing all good fidelity that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things 11 For the grace of God ‖ Or that bringeth salvation to all men hath appeared that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men 12 Teaching us that denying ungodliness and wordly lusts we should live soberly righteously and godly in this present world 13 * 1 Cor. 1.7 Phil. 3.20 Looking for that blessed hope and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ 14 Who gave himself for us that he might redeem us from all iniquity and purifie unto himself a peculiar people zealous of good works 15 These things speak and exhort and rebuke with all authority Let no man despise thee CHAP.
