A70705 The letter which was sent to the author of the doctrine of passive obedience and jure divino disproved, &c. answered and refuted wherein is proved, that monarchy was not originally from God. That kings are not by divine appointment, but that all government proceeds from the people. That the obedience required in Scripture, is to the laws of the land, and no otherwise. That resisting of arbitary power is lawful. That the oath of allegiance to to the late King James was dissolved before the Prince of Orange (our present King) landed. That upon the non-performance of an oath on one side, the other becomes void, is plainly prov'd from several examples in scripture. That protection is the only cause of allegiance, and that obedience or allegiance is due to the present government is proved from Scripture, law and reason; and those texts of scriptures which relate to government, or monarchy, are explained. the_o doctrine_n of_o passive_a obedience_n and_o jure_fw-la divino_fw-la disprove_v etc._n etc._n sir_n i_o question_v not_o but_o that_o your_o answer_n be_v the_o idea_n of_o your_o mind_n which_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o to_o make_v appear_v to_o be_v not_o only_o pernicious_a but_o tend_v to_o the_o destruction_n of_o all_o humane_a society_n and_o likewise_o that_o you_o have_v wrest_v the_o scripture_n and_o have_v make_v notorious_a false_a assertion_n for_o brevity_n sake_n i_o shall_v leave_v out_o your_o unnecessary_a prologue_n you_o say_v you_o will_v not_o recite_v any_o of_o my_o that_o read_v this_o book_n to_o take_v the_o pain_n to_o read_v my_o former_a sheet_n and_o number_v the_o break_v or_o assertion_n therein_o and_o compare_v they_o with_o your_o answer_n which_o i_o have_v set_v down_o verbatim_o that_o they_o may_v the_o better_a judge_n of_o the_o ridiculousness_n thereof_o 1._o to_o begin_v you_o say_v by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n it_o appear_v that_o monarchy_n be_v the_o government_n which_o god_n have_v choose_v above_o all_o other_o and_o that_o the_o people_n be_v always_o oblige_v to_o accept_v that_o form_n of_o government_n which_o god_n be_v the_o law_n of_o the_o kingdom_n and_o write_v it_o in_o a_o book_n and_o lay_v it_o up_o before_o the_o lord_n sure_o no_o man_n will_v say_v but_o that_o this_o law_n be_v a_o rule_n for_o tribe_n but_o with_o what_o face_n can_v you_o wrest_v the_o scripture_n thus_o in_o say_v that_o the_o people_n choose_v of_o jeroboam_n be_v more_o than_o once_o call_v a_o sin_n when_o both_o these_o text_n which_o you_o quote_v relate_v to_o the_o aforegoing_a verse_n wherein_o it_o be_v say_v that_o king_n rehoboam_n send_v adoram_n that_o be_v over_o the_o tribute_n and_o all_o israel_n stone_v he_o with_o stone_n that_o he_o die_v which_o be_v rebellion_n because_o it_o be_v resist_v the_o lawful_a authority_n beside_o jeroboam_n be_v not_o mention_v as_o king_n till_o after_o join_v let_v no_o man_n put_v asunder_o the_o head_n can_v be_v well_o if_o the_o member_n be_v much_o out_o of_o order_n neither_o can_v the_o member_n right_o perform_v their_o office_n if_o the_o head_n be_v sick_a and_o weak_a the_o good_a of_o the_o society_n be_v indeed_o the_o end_n of_o government_n but_o it_o be_v nonsense_n to_o talk_v of_o the_o good_a of_o a_o society_n without_o include_v the_o governor_n as_o well_o as_o the_o govern_v the_o people_n be_v no_o way_n command_v by_o god_n to_o put_v themselves_o into_o this_o or_o that_o form_n of_o government_n but_o it_o be_v whole_o leave_v to_o their_o choice_n and_o all_o government_n whatsoever_o though_o after_o the_o mutual_a tie_n of_o reciprocal_a oath_n be_v not_o join_v by_o god_n though_o permit_v by_o he_o but_o how_o do_v you_o wrest_v the_o scripture_n which_o particular_o relate_v to_o man_n and_o wife_n and_o apply_v it_o to_o government_n as_o may_v be_v see_v matth._n 19.6_o but_o verse_n 9_o his_o arbitrary_a will_n and_o pleasure_n than_o for_o to_o turn_v away_o one_o wife_n for_o fornication_n i_o say_v if_o a_o woman_n forfeit_v her_o right_a to_o her_o husband_n by_o break_v of_o her_o marriage-vow_n in_o commit_v of_o fornication_n sure_o it_o be_v much_o more_o reasonable_a that_o a_o king_n who_o break_v his_o oath_n and_o endeavour_n to_o overthrow_v the_o government_n and_o establish_v a_o idolatrous_a religion_n and_o by_o consequence_n rob_v god_n and_o the_o nation_n of_o their_o right_n shall_v forfeit_v his_o right_n to_o the_o people_n the_o safety_n of_o the_o body_n that_o be_v the_o people_n be_v to_o be_v value_v before_o the_o head_n which_o be_v the_o chief_a governor_n because_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o get_v a_o head_n to_o the_o body_n but_o not_o a_o body_n to_o the_o head._n 4._o the_o law_n preserve_v the_o king_n from_o force_n and_o violence_n
be_v not_o lawful_a to_o persecute_v contrary_a to_o the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n it_o follow_v that_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o withstand_v such_o persecution_n and_o be_v it_o not_o better_a to_o die_v with_o the_o sword_n in_o the_o hand_n in_o defence_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o its_o true_a religion_n against_o a_o false_a one_o which_o be_v endeavour_v to_o be_v be_v set_v up_o contrary_a to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o the_o country_n than_o to_o be_v force_v by_o cruel_a torture_n and_o persecution_n to_o worship_n god_n in_o a_o idolatrous_a way_n but_o some_o may_v object_v it_o can_v be_v no_o real_a idolatry_n without_o the_o heart_n join_v with_o the_o ceremony_n of_o the_o body_n yet_o a_o outward_a idolatry_n be_v a_o great_a sin_n but_o who_o can_v secure_v to_o we_o that_o our_o child_n or_o child_n child_n shall_v be_v real_a idolater_n then_o the_o sin_n of_o idolatry_n which_o they_o shall_v be_v guilty_a of_o will_v be_v lay_v at_o our_o door_n when_o by_o a_o timely_a defence_n we_o may_v have_v prevent_v it_o 13._o king_n it_o be_v true_a be_v make_v to_o govern_v and_o protect_v the_o people_n the_o people_n to_o reverence_n and_o obey_v their_o king_n both_o king_n and_o people_n to_o serve_v god_n and_o keep_v his_o commandment_n the_o people_n be_v oblige_v to_o obey_v their_o king_n in_o every_o act_n of_o command_n of_o he_o which_o do_v not_o derogate_v from_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o the_o nation_n 14._o the_o design_n of_o the_o corporation-oath_n be_v most_o plain_o to_o prevent_v all_o rebellion_n upon_o any_o pretence_n whatsoever_o can_v any_o man_n be_v so_o mad_a as_o to_o think_v the_o parliament_n do_v give_v up_o themselves_o and_o the_o community_n to_o obey_v whatever_o the_o king_n shall_v command_v for_o what_o be_v it_o else_o if_o the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n or_o corporation-oath_n be_v to_o be_v take_v in_o the_o strict_a sense_n this_o be_v to_o make_v the_o king_n a_o tyrant_n by_o law_n or_o at_o least_o allow_v he_o to_o be_v such_o no_o oath_n be_v or_o can_v be_v bind_v beyond_o the_o design_n of_o the_o giver_n it_o be_v plain_a these_o oath_n be_v not_o design_v for_o our_o ruin_n and_o therefore_o can_v be_v take_v or_o keep_v in_o that_o sense_n all_o oath_n to_o a_o governor_n or_o government_n be_v design_v for_o the_o good_a safety_n and_o welfare_n of_o the_o govern_v as_o well_o as_o the_o governor_n so_o no_o oath_n can_v bind_v we_o to_o our_o own_o destruction_n though_o lawful_a authority_n shall_v command_v such_o a_o oath_n it_o be_v a_o sin_n to_o take_v it_o but_o much_o great_a to_o keep_v it_o because_o such_o subjection_n be_v inhuman_a and_o contrary_a to_o the_o very_a design_n of_o government_n both_o from_o god_n and_o man_n and_o the_o lesser_a evil_a ought_v to_o be_v choose_v before_o the_o great_a rebellion_n be_v resist_v the_o lawful_a power_n of_o the_o government_n but_o it_o be_v no_o more_o rebellion_n to_o resist_v the_o unlawful_a and_o exorbitant_a power_n of_o the_o prince_n than_o war_n tyler_n or_o jack_n cade_n etc._n etc._n they_o be_v rebel_n who_o arm_n against_o the_o government_n which_o be_v the_o law_n not_o they_o that_o arm_n to_o defend_v it_o 14._o david_n make_v no_o resistance_n at_o all_o neither_o offensive_a nor_o defensive_a as_o for_o your_o negative_a resistance_n by_o flight_n as_o you_o term_v it_o i_o do_v not_o understand_v it_o as_o for_o the_o force_n which_o he_o have_v about_o he_o it_o be_v most_o probable_a that_o he_o raise_v they_o for_o no_o other_o purpose_n but_o to_o be_v spy_n and_o scout_n to_o give_v intelligence_n of_o saul_n be_v ambushment_n for_o what_o will_v six_o hundred_o man_n have_v signify_v to_o saul_n be_v numerous_a army_n have_v it_o be_v david_n be_v intent_n to_o have_v make_v any_o resistance_n we_o read_v indeed_o that_o athaliah_n be_v depose_v but_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n not_o because_o she_o be_v a_o monstrous_a unnatural_a tyrant_n but_o because_o she_o be_v a_o usurper_n he_o who_o do_v not_o obey_v the_o command_n of_o his_o prince_n when_o according_a to_o law_n make_v negative_a resistance_n because_o he_o resist_v the_o law_n and_o by_o consequence_n the_o prince_n what_o can_v david_n mean_v by_o have_v six_o hundred_o man_n but_o to_o secure_v his_o person_n and_o make_v positive_a resistance_n if_o he_o have_v be_v force_v to_o a_o strait_a and_o can_v not_o have_v secure_v himself_o otherwise_o sure_o fifty_o or_o a_o hundred_o man_n will_v have_v be_v enough_o for_o spy_n and_o scout_n can_v not_o god_n have_v deliver_v saul_n numerous_a army_n into_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o six_o hundred_o man_n as_o well_o as_o the_o numerous_a army_n of_o the_o amalekite_n into_o the_o hand_n of_o but_o his_o son_n he_o slay_v his_o servant_n which_o have_v slay_v his_o father_n the_o proof_n of_o scripture_n which_o i_o quote_v have_v a_o particular_a relation_n to_o the_o primitive_a christian_n under_o the_o heathen_a emperor_n and_o to_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n and_o it_o be_v usual_a with_o god_n to_o set_v up_o one_o king_n over_o his_o people_n the_o jew_n and_o pull_v down_o another_o for_o their_o misgovernment_n but_o we_o can_v expect_v god_n to_o act_v so_o for_o we_o because_o he_o do_v not_o set_v up_o or_o appoint_v our_o king_n therefore_o we_o ought_v to_o turn_v
