the_o case_n of_o a_o oath_n of_o abjuration_n consider_v and_o the_o vote_n of_o the_o honourable_a house_n of_o commons_z vindicated_n in_o a_o letter_n to_o a_o friend_n london_n print_v for_o the_o author_n 1693._o sir_n i_o be_v great_o amaze_v to_o hear_v you_o the_o other_o day_n so_o passionate_o concern_v in_o behalf_n of_o the_o oath_n of_o abjuration_n as_o though_o our_o whole_a stake_n and_o safety_n depend_v on_o its_o pass_v on_o the_o nation_n this_o convince_v i_o that_o it_o be_v not_o impossible_a for_o people_n to_o intend_v the_o same_o end_n by_o the_o most_o different_a mean_n imaginable_a for_o i_o very_o believe_v there_o be_v not_o two_o man_n in_o england_n that_o in_o their_o heart_n do_v more_o sincere_o love_v their_o present_a majesty_n nor_o that_o according_a to_o their_o poor_a capacity_n and_o station_n serve_v they_o better_o than_o you_o and_o i._o and_o yet_o i_o tell_v you_o now_o as_o i_o forbear_v not_o to_o tell_v you_o then_o that_o i_o think_v a_o oath_n of_o abjuration_n be_v as_o unlikely_a a_o thing_n to_o serve_v their_o present_a majesty_n as_o any_o one_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n beside_o you_o tell_v i_o then_o moreover_o that_o some_o good_a understanding_n people_n of_o your_o acquaintance_n be_v very_o much_o offend_v at_o the_o house_n of_o commons_o for_o throw_v out_o that_o bill_n twice_o in_o two_o successive_a session_n and_o that_o they_o be_v look_v upon_o rather_o as_o enemy_n than_o friend_n to_o the_o present_a government_n i_o tell_v you_o then_o moreover_o that_o your_o acquaintance_n may_v be_v both_o good_a and_o understand_a people_n but_o that_o they_o make_v very_o bold_a with_o the_o house_n of_o commons_o and_o be_v not_o understanding_n enough_o in_o these_o affair_n to_o pass_v a_o true_a judgement_n on_o they_o and_o that_o it_o be_v a_o most_o pernicious_a thing_n to_o look_v on_o all_o that_o be_v not_o of_o our_o mind_n as_o enemy_n there_o be_v nothing_o more_o sure_a than_o that_o two_o party_n may_v do_v as_o you_o and_o i_o do_v differ_v exceed_o in_o the_o mean_n of_o secure_v and_o support_v the_o government_n and_o yet_o both_o wish_v and_o intend_v the_o secure_n and_o support_v of_o it_o as_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n to_o be_v make_v but_o both_o side_n of_o the_o house_n of_o commons_o do_v both_o side_n may_v be_v right_a in_o their_o intention_n i._n e._n intend_v the_o peace_n and_o welfare_n of_o the_o kingdom_n though_o the_o mean_n they_o pitch_v upon_o may_v be_v very_o different_a so_o different_a that_o the_o contrary_a side_n may_v fancy_v they_o be_v true_o destructive_a of_o the_o end_n they_o aim_v at_o without_o believe_v that_o the_o person_n concern_v design_v any_o other_o than_o good_a to_o their_o majesty_n and_o the_o kingdom_n with_o this_o you_o seem_v to_o be_v for_o the_o present_a satisfy_v but_o since_o i_o understand_v you_o begin_v to_o change_v your_o mind_n again_o and_o desire_v i_o to_o set_v down_o in_o write_v upon_o what_o reason_n i_o ground_n my_o opinion_n of_o the_o mischief_n of_o a_o oath_n of_o abjuration_n and_o send_v they_o to_o you_o i_o have_v agree_v to_o do_v so_o and_o i_o suppose_v i_o shall_v sufficient_o satisfy_v all_o your_o scruple_n if_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o these_o three_o thing_n first_o that_o a_o oath_n of_o abjuration_n be_v altogether_o new_a and_o strange_a in_o england_n second_o that_o it_o be_v altogether_o needless_a three_o that_o it_o be_v altogether_o impossible_a to_o be_v keep_v 1._o a_o oath_n of_o abjuration_n be_v altogether_o strange_a and_o new_a in_o england_n the_o line_n of_o succession_n have_v be_v as_o frequent_o interrupt_v in_o england_n as_o in_o any_o hereditary_a kingdom_n in_o the_o world_n beside_o and_o therefore_o there_o have_v be_v as_o much_o need_n of_o a_o oath_n of_o abjuration_n here_o as_o any_o where_o and_o yet_o we_o have_v never_o have_v one_o it_o be_v not_o for_o want_v of_o instance_n but_o to_o spare_v your_o time_n and_o patience_n that_o i_o run_v not_o up_o beyond_o the_o conquest_n but_o will_v begin_v there_o what_o right_a or_o title_n william_n the_o conqueror_n have_v to_o right_a at_o all_o for_o what_o power_n have_v a_o king_n of_o england_n of_o himself_o to_o give_v or_o bestow_v the_o kingdom_n to_o who_o he_o please_v but_o however_o he_o also_o give_v it_o to_o refer_v you_o if_o you_o please_v this_o make_v i_o inclinable_a to_o interpret_v communam_fw-la by_o something_o that_o the_o citizen_n of_o london_n like_v because_o they_o seem_v to_o do_v a_o very_a bold_a and_o a_o unjust_a thing_n in_o lieu_n of_o it_o they_o take_v a_o oath_n of_o fidelity_n to_o one_o who_o be_v neither_o heir_n by_o god_n nor_o by_o the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n nor_o yet_o by_o designation_n and_o appointment_n of_o the_o king_n then_o live_v who_o be_v very_o angry_a at_o these_o proceed_n and_o speak_v very_o hard_a word_n of_o his_o brother_n john_n and_o there_o be_v great_a reason_n to_o believe_v these_o strange_a do_n as_o well_o as_o the_o departure_n of_o his_o enemy_n king_n philip_n of_o france_n hasten_v his_o return_n the_o soon_o into_o eighteen_o month_n this_o opportunity_n his_o brother_n john_n lay_v hold_v on_o and_o by_o the_o instigation_n of_o the_o french_a king_n open_v his_o purpose_n and_o seek_v the_o crown_n sometime_o give_v out_o the_o king_n be_v dead_a and_o sometime_o that_o the_o emperor_n resolve_v never_o to_o let_v he_o go_v and_o some_o historian_n tell_v we_o that_o the_o king_n of_o france_n and_o john_n make_v mighty_a offer_v to_o the_o emperor_n either_o to_o detain_v he_o or_o deliver_v he_o up_o into_o their_o hand_n which_o he_o have_v much_o ado_n to_o resist_v but_o the_o nobility_n oppose_v he_o constant_o and_o keep_v their_o faith_n inviolable_a to_o their_o king_n to_o their_o great_a praise_n and_o however_o careless_a and_o injurious_a they_o have_v be_v with_o respect_n to_o arthur_n right_a of_o succession_n yet_o they_o be_v very_o bold_a and_o faithful_a to_o their_o present_a king_n in_o possession_n insomuch_o that_o instead_o of_o deliver_v up_o the_o kingdom_n and_o swear_v allegiance_n to_o he_o as_o he_o demand_v they_o very_o vigorous_o besiege_v he_o and_o he_o in_o windsor-castle_n and_o force_v he_o to_o surrender_v that_o and_o other_o hold_v and_o do_v for_o richard_n come_v and_o land_v at_o sandwich_n in_o kent_n and_o be_v joyful_o receive_v of_o all_o his_o subject_n throughout_o the_o kingdom_n except_v some_o few_o place_n which_o hold_v out_o for_o john_n which_o in_o a_o little_a time_n be_v reduce_v and_o take_v into_o mercy_n by_o the_o king_n who_o by_o the_o advice_n of_o the_o bishop_n be_v again_o crown_v with_o great_a pomp_n at_o winchester_n this_o be_v a_o long_a history_n you_o will_v think_v though_o i_o have_v great_o shorten_v it_o but_o whereto_o do_v it_o serve_v why_o some_o have_v confound_v these_o two_o attempt_n of_o john_n and_o make_v but_o one_o of_o they_o and_o some_o have_v only_o mention_v his_o attempt_n during_o his_o brother_n imprisonment_n which_o yet_o you_o see_v be_v a_o second_o undertake_n in_o pursuance_n of_o the_o first_o which_o make_v way_n as_o he_o imagine_v for_o it_o the_o use_v i_o make_v of_o it_o be_v this_o to_o show_v you_o that_o john_n by_o this_o first_o treasonable_a attempt_n of_o cause_v people_n to_o swear_v fidelity_n to_o he_o against_o the_o king_n will_n and_o without_o his_o knowledge_n and_o when_o he_o be_v not_o so_o much_o as_o presumptive_a heir_n must_v make_v he_o just_o liable_a both_o to_o the_o king_n anger_n and_o to_o the_o punishment_n of_o the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n but_o that_o his_o second_o attempt_n upon_o the_o crown_n make_v he_o undoubted_o a_o traitor_n and_o not_o to_o be_v endure_v either_o by_o king_n or_o subject_a i_o know_v not_o how_o a_o subject_a can_v become_v more_o dangerous_a and_o to_o be_v suspect_v than_o by_o have_v once_o be_v swear_v into_o the_o succession_n without_o his_o prince_n knowledge_n and_o good_a will_n and_o have_v afterward_o demand_v open_o the_o crown_n although_o his_o king_n be_v then_o alive_a and_o sure_o his_o succeed_v so_o well_o as_o he_o do_v the_o first_o time_n and_o his_o attempt_n it_o the_o second_o time_n must_v make_v he_o a_o dangerous_a competitor_n to_o the_o king_n and_o fit_a to_o be_v exclude_v by_o a_o oath_n of_o abjuration_n but_o nothing_o of_o this_o be_v think_v upon_o richard_n
thing_n a_o oath_n of_o abjuration_n will_v discover_v it_o will_v discover_v our_o distress_n second_o it_o will_v discover_v who_o can_v serve_v the_o king_n no_o long_o that_o be_v certain_a we_o shall_v see_v thereby_o who_o they_o be_v that_o can_v pay_v their_o majesty_n no_o more_o than_o allegiance_n and_o fidelity_n that_o be_v who_o can_v pay_v no_o more_o than_o have_v at_o any_o time_n be_v pay_v to_o all_o or_o any_o of_o their_o predecessor_n for_o above_o six_o hundred_o year_n no_o more_o than_o any_o of_o their_o predecessor_n have_v at_o any_o time_n demand_v this_o we_o shall_v see_v and_o these_o discovery_n will_v be_v make_v thereby_o but_o what_o shall_v we_o get_v by_o such_o discovery_n they_o will_v please_v no_o good_a subject_n there_o will_v be_v little_a joy_n in_o see_v a_o great_a number_n of_o good_a people_n that_o serve_v their_o present_a majesty_n with_o faithfulness_n and_o honesty_n and_o diligence_n and_o with_o affection_n too_o dispossess_v of_o their_o employment_n and_o incapacitate_v to_o serve_v they_o any_o long_o for_o to_o be_v sure_a no_o other_o but_o the_o honest_a faithful_a and_o the_o conscientious_a will_v be_v dispossess_v thereby_o no_o false_a subject_n none_o that_o can_v play_v with_o a_o allegiance-oath_n will_v forfeit_v any_o thing_n for_o fear_n of_o a_o abjuration-oath_n a_o abjuration-oath_n will_v therefore_o discover_v those_o who_o can_v serve_v their_o majesty_n as_o far_o as_o a_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n can_v carry_v they_o but_o no_o far_o and_o that_o be_v a_o second_o discovery_n but_o such_o a_o one_o as_o no_o good_a english_a man_n can_v desire_v to_o make_v in_o your_o opinion_n three_o a_o abjuration-oath_n will_v discover_v it_o be_v hope_v a_o short_a passage_n to_o the_o west_n and_o east_n indies_n a_o fresh_a spanish_a wreck_n a_o new_a and_o ready_a way_n to_o benesicial_a office_n and_o great_a preferment_n if_o it_o do_v not_o lay_v open_a the_o road_n to_o good_a employment_n by_o new_a vacancy_n it_o will_v be_v good_a for_o just_a nothing_o if_o those_o who_o take_v the_o allegiance-oath_n shall_v chance_v to_o take_v as_o who_o can_v tell_v the_o abjuration-oath_n and_o continue_v as_o they_o be_v you_o will_v hear_v no_o more_o talk_n of_o its_o great_a security_n and_o tendency_n to_o the_o establishment_n of_o the_o present_a government_n if_o this_o can_v be_v foresee_v a_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n will_v suffice_v in_o their_o opinion_n for_o any_o king_n or_o queen_n in_o christendom_n if_o you_o think_v sir_n i_o go_v too_o far_o in_o this_o matter_n i_o retract_v i_o have_v rather_o much_o be_v mistake_v in_o my_o guess_n than_o that_o any_o considerable_a body_n of_o english_a gentleman_n shall_v prefer_v so_o vile_a and_o selfish_a a_o design_n to_o the_o peace_n and_o welfare_n of_o their_o natural_a country_n but_o if_o you_o know_v this_o part_n of_o mankind_n as_o well_o as_o i_o do_v you_o will_v still_o fear_v that_o the_o way_n to_o office_n and_o good_a preferment_n be_v one_o of_o the_o discovery_n design_v to_o be_v make_v by_o a_o oath_n of_o abjuration_n by_o a_o great_a many_o people_n but_o to_o draw_v to_o a_o conclusion_n of_o this_o head_n a_o oath_n of_o abjuration_n must_v be_v altogether_o needless_a if_o it_o will_v effect_v no_o great_a matter_n to_o the_o security_n of_o the_o present_a government_n than_o a_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n will_v do_v now_o though_o all_o the_o man_n in_o england_n who_o have_v take_v the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n shall_v also_o take_v the_o oath_n of_o abjuration_n yet_o it_o be_v from_o the_o oath_n of_o allegigiance_n and_o fidelity_n the_o government_n must_v look_v for_o and_o find_v its_o security_n and_o not_o from_o the_o oath_n of_o abjuration_n for_o he_o who_o have_v swear_v allegiance_n and_o fidelity_n to_o king_n william_n and_o queen_n mary_n have_v swear_v he_o will_v obey_v and_o serve_v they_o according_a to_o his_o power_n and_o show_v himself_o a_o good_a and_o faithful_a subject_n to_o they_o in_o the_o respective_a post_n and_o station_n he_o be_v in_o he_o be_v not_o only_o tie_v thereby_o to_o live_v peaceable_o and_o quiet_o under_o their_o government_n without_o offend_v against_o their_o law_n or_o do_v any_o thing_n to_o their_o prejudice_n but_o he_o be_v tie_v to_o activity_n in_o their_o behalf_n and_o defence_n if_o his_o post_n and_o station_n be_v such_o as_o require_v he_o to_o be_v active_a no_o one_o that_o in_o good_a conscience_n take_v the_o oath_n to_o their_o present_a majesty_n can_v find_v himself_o at_o liberty_n to_o serve_v by_o any_o way_n or_o mean_n one_o that_o will_v certain_o dethrone_v they_o this_o be_v undoubted_o the_o least_o that_o a_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n can_v do_v that_o it_o tie_v the_o hand_n of_o all_o that_o take_v it_o from_o lend_v any_o manner_n of_o aid_n or_o assistance_n to_o the_o late_a king_n james_n but_o if_o his_o post_n be_v active_a he_o be_v far_o oblige_v thereby_o to_o be_v active_a in_o their_o defence_n if_o a_o privy_a councillor_n a_o bishop_n and_o a_o general_n take_v the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n to_o king_n william_n and_o queen_n mary_n they_o be_v undoubted_o oblige_v thereby_o to_o advise_v faithful_o and_o keep_v the_o secret_n to_o pray_v for_o the_o prosperity_n and_o fight_v the_o battle_n of_o they_o so_o that_o as_o far_o as_o and_o wherever_o the_o office_n require_v activity_n the_o oath_n oblige_v to_o it_o and_o all_o the_o security_n a_o prince_n can_v expect_v must_v come_v and_o arise_v from_o the_o obligation_n of_o such_o a_o oath_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n what_o will_v it_o signify_v or_o contribute_v to_o the_o security_n of_o their_o present_a majesty_n that_o a_o man_n shall_v swear_v they_o be_v the_o legal_a lineal_a just_a and_o rightful_a possessor_n of_o the_o crown_n and_o renounce_v abjure_v and_o disclaim_v all_o right_a and_o title_n of_o the_o late_a king_n james_n thereto_o unless_o he_o hold_v himself_o oblige_v by_o virtue_n of_o his_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n to_o keep_v and_o defend_v they_o in_o their_o present_a possession_n to_o the_o best_a of_o his_o power_n against_o all_o claimer_n whatsoever_o i_o know_v there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n betwixt_o a_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n and_o fidelity_n simple_o such_o and_o a_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n which_o be_v also_o declarative_a of_o right_n but_o the_o difference_n do_v not_o lie_v in_o this_o that_o a_o oath_n declarative_a of_o right_n be_v of_o great_a security_n to_o the_o prince_n than_o a_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n without_o such_o declaration_n for_o he_o who_o take_v a_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n give_v himself_o to_o who_o he_o swear_v a_o right_a to_o his_o allegiance_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v although_o he_o may_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v have_v no_o right_a to_o it_o before_o and_o therefore_o owe_v the_o prince_n as_o much_o allegiance_n after_o his_o oath_n as_o if_o he_o have_v in_o the_o oath_n acknowledge_v he_o to_o be_v the_o most_o rightful_a prince_n in_o the_o world_n as_o if_o a_o man_n oblige_v himself_o by_o oath_n to_o pay_v another_o a_o hundred_o pound_n he_o be_v as_o strong_o oblige_v to_o pay_v it_o he_o by_o virtue_n of_o his_o oath_n as_o if_o he_o have_v true_o borrow_v it_o in_o time_n pass_v of_o he_o the_o oath_n have_v give_v the_o other_o a_o right_n to_o the_o money_n and_o by_o the_o oath_n the_o promiser_n be_v oblige_v to_o pay_v it_o i_o do_v not_o say_v that_o a_o man_n will_v not_o choose_v if_o he_o can_v rather_o to_o have_v a_o double_a right_n to_o his_o money_n both_o that_o of_o debt_n and_o that_o of_o oath_n than_o a_o single_a one_o of_o oath_n but_o i_o say_v that_o a_o oath_n if_o the_o man_n be_v able_a and_o conscientious_a will_v as_o certain_o secure_v the_o money_n to_o the_o other_o as_o both_o a_o oath_n and_o debt_n by_o this_o i_o mean_v to_o say_v that_o the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n be_v of_o itself_o as_o great_a security_n to_o the_o prince_n as_o if_o a_o man_n shall_v withal_o both_o recognize_v the_o prince_n right_o and_o abjure_v and_o renounce_v to_o the_o title_n and_o right_n of_o any_o other_o because_o the_o security_n arise_v to_o the_o prince_n from_o the_o positive_a engagement_n of_o the_o subject_a to_o do_v something_o for_o he_o to_o do_v nothing_o against_o he_o to_o pay_v he_o service_n and_o obedience_n and_o to_o defend_v he_o against_o his_o enemy_n to_o his_o power_n and_o not_o from_o acknowledge_v he_o to_o be_v the_o rightful_a prince_n and_o swear_v that_o another_o have_v no_o right_a to_o his_o allegiance_n which_o may_v be_v true_a but_o signify_v nothing_o to_o his_o security_n it_o be_v therefore_o evident_a that_o all_o the_o security_n that_o can_v arise_v to_o the_o prince_n
