A68707 A large declaration concerning the late tumults in Scotland, from their first originalls together with a particular deduction of the seditious practices of the prime leaders of the Covenanters: collected out of their owne foule acts and writings: by which it doth plainly appeare, that religion was onely pretended by those leaders, but nothing lesse intended by them. By the King. Balcanquhall, Walter, 1586?-1645.; Charles I, King of England, 1600-1649. 1639 (1639) STC 21906; ESTC S116832 348,621 446

syllable_n shall_v have_v their_o word_n take_v to_o another_o sense_n and_o be_v think_v to_o abjure_v episcopal_a government_n more_o than_o other_o who_o have_v take_v the_o same_o oath_n in_o the_o same_o word_n must_v needs_o pass_v the_o capacity_n of_o a_o ordinary_a understanding_n it_o be_v a_o receive_a maxim_n and_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o that_o oath_n minister_v unto_o we_o must_v either_o be_v refuse_v or_o else_o take_v according_a to_o the_o know_a mind_n profess_a intention_n and_o express_v command_n of_o authority_n urge_v the_o same_o a_o proposition_n not_o only_o receive_v in_o all_o school_n but_o positive_o set_v down_o by_o the_o adherer_n to_o the_o say_a protestation_n totidem_fw-la verbis_fw-la in_o the_o place_n above_o cite_v but_o it_o be_v notorious_o know_v even_o unto_o those_o who_o subscribe_v the_o confession_n of_o faith_n by_o his_o majesty_n commandment_n that_o his_o majesty_n not_o only_o in_o his_o kingdom_n of_o england_n and_o ireland_n be_v a_o maintainer_n and_o upholder_n of_o episcopal_a government_n according_a to_o the_o law_n of_o the_o say_a church_n and_o kingdom_n but_o that_o likewaies_o he_o be_v a_o defender_n and_o intend_v to_o continue_v a_o defender_n of_o the_o same_o government_n in_o his_o kingdom_n of_o scotland_n both_o before_o the_o time_n and_o at_o the_o time_n when_o he_o urge_v this_o oath_n as_o be_v evident_a by_o that_o which_o be_v in_o my_o lord_n commissioner_n his_o preface_n both_o concern_v his_o majesty_n instruction_n to_o his_o grace_n and_o his_o grace_n express_v his_o majesty_n mind_n both_o to_o the_o lord_n of_o council_n and_o to_o the_o lord_n of_o session_n and_o the_o same_o likeways_o be_v plain_o express_v and_o acknowledge_v by_o the_o adherer_n to_o the_o say_a protestation_n in_o the_o place_n above_o cite_v their_o word_n be_v these_o and_o it_o be_v most_o manifest_a that_o his_o majesty_n mind_n intention_n and_o commandment_n be_v no_o other_o but_o that_o the_o confession_n be_v swear_v for_o the_o maintenance_n of_o religion_n as_o it_o be_v already_o or_o present_o profess_v these_o two_o be_v co-incident_a altogether_o one_o and_o the_o same_o not_o only_o in_o our_o common_a form_n of_o speak_v but_o in_o all_o his_o majesty_n proclamation_n and_o thus_o as_o it_o include_v and_o continue_v within_o the_o compass_n thereof_o the_o foresaid_n novation_n and_o episcopacy_n which_o under_o that_o name_n be_v also_o ratify_v in_o the_o first_o parliament_n hold_v by_o his_o majesty_n from_o whence_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o episcopacy_n not_o be_v take_v away_o or_o suspend_v by_o any_o of_o his_o majesty_n declaration_n as_o these_o other_o thing_n be_v which_o they_o call_v novation_n it_o must_v needs_o both_o in_o deed_n and_o in_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o say_a protester_n no_o way_n be_v intend_v by_o his_o majesty_n to_o be_v abjure_v by_o the_o say_a oath_n now_o both_o the_o major_a and_o that_o part_n of_o the_o minor_a which_o concern_v episcopal_a government_n in_o the_o church_n of_o scotland_n be_v clear_o acknowledge_v by_o the_o protester_n and_o the_o other_o part_n of_o the_o minor_a concern_v that_o government_n in_o his_o other_o two_o kingdom_n be_v notorious_o know_v not_o only_o to_o they_o but_o to_o all_o other_o who_o know_v his_o majesty_n how_o it_o can_v be_v imagine_v that_o his_o majesty_n by_o that_o oath_n shall_v command_v episcopacy_n to_o be_v abjure_v or_o how_o can_v any_o one_o to_o who_o his_o majesty_n mind_n concern_v episcopal_a government_n be_v know_v honest_o or_o safe_o abjure_v it_o let_v it_o be_v leave_v to_o the_o whole_a world_n to_o judge_v especial_o consider_v that_o the_o protester_n themselves_o in_o that_o place_n above_o cite_v by_o a_o dilemma_n which_o we_o leave_v to_o themselves_o to_o answer_v have_v aver_v that_o when_o that_o act_n of_o council_n shall_v come_v out_o yet_o that_o it_o can_v not_o be_v infer_v from_o thence_o that_o any_o such_o thing_n be_v abjure_v five_o and_o last_o if_o the_o explanation_n in_o that_o act_n of_o council_n be_v take_v in_o that_o not_o only_o rigid_a but_o unreasonable_a and_o senseless_a sense_n which_o they_o urge_v yet_o they_o can_v never_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o episcopal_a government_n at_o the_o first_o time_n of_o the_o administer_a of_o that_o oath_n be_v abolish_v the_o very_a word_n of_o that_o confession_n of_o faith_n immediate_o after_o the_o begin_n of_o it_o be_v these_o receive_v believe_v defend_v by_o many_o and_o sundry_a notable_a kirk_n and_o realm_n but_o chief_o by_o the_o kirk_n of_o scotland_n the_o king_n majesty_n and_o three_o estate_n of_o this_o realm_n as_o god_n eternal_a truth_n and_o only_a ground_n of_o our_o salvation_n etc._n etc._n by_o which_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o subscription_n to_o this_o confession_n of_o faith_n be_v to_o be_v urge_v in_o no_o other_o sense_n then_o as_o it_o be_v then_o believe_v and_o receive_v by_o the_o king_n majesty_n and_o the_o three_o estate_n of_o this_o realm_n at_o that_o time_n in_o be_v and_o it_o be_v well_o know_v that_o at_o that_o time_n bishop_n abbat_n and_o prior_n make_v up_o a_o three_o estate_n of_o this_o realm_n which_o give_v approbation_n to_o this_o confession_n of_o faith_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v conceive_v that_o this_o three_o estate_n do_v then_o abjure_v episcopacy_n or_o that_o episcopacy_n be_v at_o the_o first_o swear_v of_o that_o confession_n abolish_v but_o say_v that_o at_o that_o time_n it_o be_v abolish_v by_o act_n of_o general_a assembly_n yet_o be_v it_o not_o so_o by_o any_o act_n of_o parliament_n nay_o by_o many_o act_n of_o parliament_n it_o be_v in_o force_n because_o none_o of_o they_o be_v repeal_v some_o whereof_o be_v annex_v in_o the_o sheet_n immediate_o after_o these_o reason_n which_o we_o pray_v the_o reader_n careful_o to_o peruse_v and_o ponder_v and_o at_o the_o very_a time_n of_o the_o take_n of_o this_o oath_n and_o after_o bishop_n who_o name_n be_v well_o know_v be_v in_o be_v now_o it_o be_v to_o be_v hope_v that_o in_o a_o monarchy_n or_o any_o other_o well_o constitute_v republic_n that_o damnable_a jesuitical_a position_n shall_v never_o take_v place_n that_o what_o be_v once_o enact_v by_o a_o monarch_n and_o his_o three_o estate_n in_o parliament_n shall_v ever_o be_v hold_v repeal_v or_o repealable_a by_o any_o ecclesiastical_a national_a synod_n by_o all_o which_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o explanation_n of_o that_o act_n of_o council_n so_o groundless_o urge_v can_v induce_v no_o man_n to_o imagine_v that_o by_o the_o confession_n of_o faith_n late_o swear_v by_o his_o majesty_n commandment_n episcopal_a government_n which_o then_o do_v and_o yet_o do_v stand_v establish_v by_o act_n of_o this_o church_n and_o kingdom_n either_o be_v or_o possible_o can_v be_v abjure_v and_o have_v now_o good_a reader_n hear_v his_o majesty_n mind_n in_o his_o instruction_n to_o we_o our_o mind_n in_o require_v in_o his_o majesty_n name_n this_o oath_n to_o be_v take_v and_o these_o few_o reason_n of_o many_o which_o do_v evident_o evince_v the_o inconsequence_n of_o that_o sense_n which_o without_o any_o show_n of_o inference_n be_v put_v upon_o it_o by_o those_o who_o will_v go_v on_o in_o make_v man_n still_o believe_v that_o all_o which_o they_o do_v or_o say_v be_v ground_v upon_o authority_n though_o they_o themselves_o do_v well_o know_v the_o contrary_a we_o suppose_v that_o all_o they_o who_o have_v take_v this_o oath_n will_v rest_v satisfy_v that_o they_o have_v not_o abjure_v episcopal_a government_n and_o that_o they_o who_o shall_v take_v it_o will_v take_v it_o in_o no_o other_o sense_n which_o timely_a warning_n of_o we_o we_o be_v the_o more_o willing_a to_o give_v because_o we_o be_v give_v to_o understand_v that_o even_o they_o who_o be_v wont_a to_o call_v the_o taker_n of_o this_o oath_n notwithstanding_o of_o that_o explanation_n by_o act_n of_o council_n perjure_a and_o damn_a person_n and_o in_o their_o pulpit_n call_v the_o urge_n of_o it_o the_o depth_n of_o sathan_n do_v now_o mean_a to_o take_v it_o themselves_o and_o urge_v other_o to_o take_v it_o in_o that_o sense_n which_o they_o make_v man_n believe_v though_o wrongful_o that_o act_n of_o council_n make_v advantageous_a to_o their_o end_n but_o we_o do_v in_o his_o majesty_n name_n require_v that_o none_o presume_v to_o take_v the_o say_a oath_n
