XXIV 1 Jehoiakim first subdued by Nebuchadnezzar then rebelling against him procureth his own ruine 6 Jehoiachin succeedeth him 7 The king of Egypt is vanquished by the king of Babylon 8 Jehoiachin his evil reign 10 Jerusalem is taken and carried captive into Babylon 17 Zedekiah is made king and reigneth ill unto the utter destruction of Judah IN his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up Jehoiakim became his servant three years then he turned rebelled against him 2 And the LORD sent against him bands of the Caldees and bands of the Syrians and bands of the Moabites and bands of the children of Ammon and sent them against Judah to destroy it * Chap. 20.17 23.27 according to the word of the LORD which he spake † Heb. by the hand of by his servants the prophets 3 Surely at the commandment of the LORD came this upon Judah to remove them out of his sight for the sins of Manasseh according to all that he did 4 And also for the innocent bloud that he shed for he filled Jerusalem with innocent bloud which the LORD would not pardon 5 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 6 So Jehoiakim slept with his fathers and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead 7 And the king of Egypt came not again any more out of his land for the king of Babylon had taken from the river of Egypt unto the river Euphrates all that pertained to the king of Egypt 8 ¶ Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign and he reigned in Jerusalem three moneths and his mothers name was Nehushta the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem 9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father had done 10 ¶ * Dan. 1.1 At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem and the city † Heb. came into siege was besieged 11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city and his servants did besiege it 12 And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon he and his mother and his servants and his princes and his ‖ Or. eunuchs officers and the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign 13 * Chap. 20.17 Isa 39 6. And he carried out thence all the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the kings house and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the LORD as the LORD had said 14 And he carried away all Jerusalem and all the princes and all the mighty men of valour even ten thousand captives and all the crafts-men and smiths none remained save the poorest sort of the people of the land 15 And * 2 Chron. 36.10 Esth 2.6 he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon and the kings mother and the kings wives and his ‖ Or eunuchs officers and the mighty of the land those carried he into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon 16 And all the men of might even seven thousand and crafts-men and smiths a thousand all that were strong and apt for war even them the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon 17 ¶ And * Jer. 37.1 the king of Babylon made Mattaniah his fathers brother king in his stead and changed his name to Zedekiah 18 * Jer. 52.1 Zedekiah was twenty and one years old when he began to reign and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah 19 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD according to all that Jehoiakim had done 20 For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah until he had cast them out from his presence that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon CHAP. XXV 1 Jerusalem is besieged 4 Zedekiah taken his sons slain his eyes put out 8 Nebuzar-adan defaceth the city carrieth the remnant except a jew poor labourers into captivity 13 spoileth and carrieth away the treasures 18 The nobles are slain at Biblab 22 Gedaliah who was set over them that remained being slain the rest flee into Egypt 27 Evil merodath advanceth Jehoiachin in his court ANd it came to pass * Jer. 39.1 and 52.4 in the ninth year of his reign in the tenth moneth in the tenth day of the moneth that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came he and all his host against Jerusalem and pitched against it and they built forts against it round about 2 And the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah 3 And on the ninth day of the * Jer. 52.6 fourth moneth the famine prevailed in the city and there was no bread for the people of the land 4 ¶ And the city was broken up and all the men of war fied by night by the way of the gate between two walls which is by the kings garden now the Caldees were against the city round about and the king went the way toward the plain 5 And the army of the Caldees pursued after the king and overtook him in the plains of Jericho and all his army were scattered from him 6 So they took the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah and they † Heb. spake judgement with him gave judgement upon him 7 And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes and † Heb. made blind● put out the eyes of Zedckiah and bound him with fetters of brass and carried him to Babylon 8 ¶ And in the fifth moneth on the seventh day of the moneth which is the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came Nebuzar-adan ‖ Or chief marshal captain of the guard a servant of the king of Babylon unto Jerusalem 9 And he burnt the house of the LORD and the kings house and all the houses of Jerusalem and every great mans house burnt he with fire 10 And all the army of the Caldees that were with the captain of the guard brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about 11 Now the rest of the people that were left in the city and the † Heb. faln away fugitives that fell away to the king of Babylon with the remnant of the multitude did Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carry away 12 But the captain of the guard left of the poor of the land to be vine-dressers and husbandmen

XXIV 1 The divisions of the sons of Aaron by lot into four and twenty orders 20 The Kohathites 27 and the Merarites divided by lot NOw these are the divisions of the sons of Aaron * Lev. 10.1 6. the God of their fathers 33 And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countreys that pertained to the children of Israel and made all that were present in Israel to serve even to serve the LORD their God And all his days they departed not † Heb. from after from following the LORD the God of their fathers CHAP. XXXV 1 Josiah keepeth a most solemn pass-over 20 He provoking Pharaoh-necho is slain at Megiddo 25 Lamentations for Josiah MOreover * 2 King 23.21 22. Josiah kept a pass-over unto the LORD in Jerusalem and they killed the pass-over on the * Ex. 12.6 fourteenth day of the first moneth 2 And he set the priests in their charges and encouraged them to the service of the house of the LORD 3 And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel which were holy unto the LORD Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders serve now the LORD your God and his people Israel 4 And prepare your selves by the * 1 Chr. 9.10 houses of your fathers after your courses according to the * 1 Chr. 23. and 24. and 25. and 2● writing of David king of Israel and according to the * Chap. ● 14 writing of Solomon his son 5 And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of † Heb. the house of the fathers the families of the fathers of your brethren † Heb. the sons of the people the people and after the division of the families of the Levites 6 So kill the pass-over and sanctifie your selves and prepare your brethren that they may do according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses 7 And Josiah † Heb. ●ffered gave to the people of the flock lambs and kids all for the pass-over-offerings for all that were present to the number of thirty thousand and three thousand bullocks these were of the kings substance 8 And his princes † Heb. ●ffered gave willingly unto the people to the priests and to the Levites Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel rulers of the house of God gave unto the priests for the pass-over-offerings two thousand and six hundred small made ready for themselves and for the priests because the priests the sons of Aaron were busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until night therefore the Levites prepared for themselves and for the priests the sons of Aaron 15 And the singers the sons of Asaph were in their † Heb. station place according to the * 1 Chr. 25.1 c. commandment of David and Asaph and H●man and Jeduthun the kings seer and the porters * 1 Chr. 9.17.18 and 26.14 c. waited at every gate they might not depart from their service for their brethren the Levites prepared for them 16 So all the service of the LORD was prepared the same day to keep the pass-over and to offer burnt-offerings upon the altar of the LORD according to the commandment of king Josiah 17 And the children of Israel that w●re † Heb. found present kept the pass-over at that time and the feast of unleavened bread seven days 18 And there was no pass-over like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a pass-over as Josiah kept and the priests and the Levites and all Judah and Israel that were present and the inhabitants of Jerusalem 19 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah was this pass-over kept 20 ¶ * 2 Kin. 23.29 After all this when Josiah had prepared the † Heb. house temple Necho king of Egypt came up to fight against Carchemish by Euphrates and Josiah went out against him 21 But he sent embassadours to him saying What have I to do with thee thou king of Judah I come not against thee this day but against † Heb. the house of my war the house wherewith I have war for God commanded me to make haste forbear thee from medling with God who is with me that he destroy thee not 22 Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him but disguised himself that he might fight with him and hearkned not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo 23 And the archers shot at king Josiah and the king said to his servants Have me away for I am sore † Heb. made sick wounded 24 His servants therefore took him out of that chariot and put him in the second chariot that he had and they brought him to where the treasures were † Cald. made to descend laid up in Babylon 2 And there was found at ‖ Or Echatana or in a coffer Achmetha in the palace that is in the province of the Medes a roll and therein was a record thus written 3 In the first year of Cyrus the king the same Cyrus the king made a decree concerning the house of God at Jerusalem Let the house be builded the place where they offered sacrifices and let the foundations thereof be strongly laid the height thereof threescore cubits and the breadth thereof threescore cubits 4 With three rows of great stones and a row of new timber and let the expences be given out of the kings house 5 And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God which Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem and brought unto Babylon be restored and † Cald. go brought again unto the temple which is at Jerusalem every one to his place and place them in the house of God 6 Now therefore Tatnai governour beyond the river Shethar-boznai and † Cald. their societies your companions the Apharsachites which are beyond the river be ye far from thence 7 Let the work of this house of God alone let the governour of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in his place 8 Moreover † Cald. by me a decree is made I make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God that of the kings goods even of the tribute beyond the river forthwith expences be given unto these men that they be not † Cald. made to cease hindred 9 And that which they have need of both young bullocks and rams and lambs for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven wheat salt wine and oyl according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem let it be given them day by day without fail 10 That they may offer sacrifices † Cald. ●f rest of sweet savours unto the God of heaven and pray for the life of the king and of his sons 11 Also I have made a decree that whosoever shall alter this word let timber be pulled down from his house and being set up † Cald. let him be destroyed let him be hanged thereon and let his house be made a dunghil for this 12 And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem I Darius have made a decree let it be done with speed 13 ¶ Then Tatnai governour on this side the river Shethar-boznai and their companions according to that which Darius the king had sent so they did speedily 14 And the elders of the Jews builded and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo and they builded and finished it according to the commandment of the God of Israel and according to the † Cald. ●●●ree commandment of Cyrus and Darius and Artaxerxes king of Persia 15 And this house was finished on the third day of the moneth Adar which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king 16 ¶ And the children of Israel the priests and the Levites and the rest of † Cald. the sons of the transportation the children of the captivity kept the dedication of this house of God with joy 17 And offered at the dedication of this house of God an hundred bullocks two hundred rams four hundred lambs and for a sin-offering for all Israel twelve he-goats according to the number of the tribes of Israel 18 And they set the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their courses for the service of God which is at Jerusalem † Cald. according to the writ●n● * R●m 3.6 ● 9 as it is written in the book of Moles 19 And the children of the captivity kept the pass-over upon the fourteenth day of the first moneth 20 For the priests and the Levites were purified together all of them were pure and killed the pass-over for all the children of the captivity and for their brethren the priests and for themselves 21 And the children of Israel which were come again out of captivity and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the filthiness of the heathen of the land to seek the LORD God of Israel did eat 22 And kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy for the LORD had made them joyful and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God the God of Israel CHAP. VII 1 Ezra goeth up to Jerusalem 11 The gracious commission of Artaxerxes to Ezra 27 Ezra blesseth God for his savour NOw after these things in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia Ezra the son of Seraiah the son of Azariah the son of Hilkiah 2 The son of Shallum the son of Zadok the son of Ahitub 3 The son of Amariah the son of Azariah the son of Meraioth 4 The son of Zerahiah the son of Uzzi the son of Bukki 5 The son of Abishua the son of Phinehas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the chief priest 6 This Ezra went up from Babylon and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses which the LORD God of Israel had given and the king granted him all his request according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him 7 And there went up some of the children of Israel and of the priests and the Levites and the singers and the porters and the Nethinims unto Jerusalem in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king 8 And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth moneth which was in the seventh year of the king 9 For upon the first day of the first moneth † Heb. was the foundation of the going up began he to go up from Babylon and on the first day of the fifth moneth came he to Jerusalem according to the good hand of his God upon him 10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD and to do it and to teach in Israel statutes and judgements 11 ¶ Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest the scribe even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD and of his statutes to Israel 12 Artaxerxes king of kings ‖ Or To Ezra the priest a perfect scribe of the law of the God of heaven peace c. Unto Ezra the priest a scribe of the law of the God of heaven perfect peace and at such a time 13 I make a decree that all they of the people of Israel and of his priests and Levites in my realm which are minded of their own
been before me and before thee of old prophesied both against many countreys and against great kingdoms of war and of evil and of pestilence 9 The prophet which prophesieth of peace when the word of the prophet shall come to pass then shall the prophet be known that the LORD hath truly sent him 10 ¶ Then Hananiah the prophet took the * Ch. 27.2 yoke from off the prophet Jeremiahs neck and brake it 11 And Hananiah spake in the presence of all the people saying Thus saith the LORD Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years And the prophet Jeremiah went his way 12 ¶ Then the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the prophet after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah saying 13 Go and tell Hananiah saying Thus saith the LORD Thou hast broken the yokes of wood but thou shalt make for them yokes of iron 14 For thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and they shall serve him and I have given him the beasts of the field also 15 ¶ Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet Hear now Hananiah The LORD hath not sent thee but thou makest this people to trust in a lie 16 Therefore thus saith the LORD Behold I will cast thee from off the face of the earth this year thou shalt die because thou hast taught * Deu. 12.5 Ch 2● 32 † Heb. ●●v●●t rebellion against the LORD 17 So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh moneth CHAP. XXIX 1 Jeremiah sendeth a letter to the captives in Babylon to be quiet there 8 and not to beleeve the dreams of their prophets 10 and that they shall return with grace after seventy years 15 He foretelleth the destruction of the rest for their disobedience 20 He sheweth the fearful end of Ahab and Zedekiah two lying prophets 24 Shemaiah writeth a letter against Jeremiah 30 Jeremiah rea●eth his doom NOw these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the residue of the elders which were carried away captives and to the priests and to the prophets and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon 2 Alter that * 2 Kin. 24.12 c. I. 1 Esdras is commanded to reprove the people 24 God threatneth to cast them off 35 to give their houses to a people of more grace then they THe second book of the prophet * Ezra 7.1 Esdras the son of Saraias the son of Azarias the son of Helchias the son of ‖ Or Shallum Sadamias the son of Sadoc the son of Achitob 2 The son of Achias the son of Phinees the son of Heli the son of Amarias the son of Aziei the son of Marimoth the son of Arna the son of Ozias the son of Borith the son of Abisei the son of Phinees the son of Eleazar 3 The son of Aaron of the tribe of Levi which was captive in the land of the Medes in the reign of Artaxerxes king of the Persians 4 And the word of the Lord came unto me saying 5 Go thy way and * Isa ● ● shew my people their sinful deeds and their children their wickedness which they have done against me that they may tell their childrens children 6 Because the sins of their fathers are increased in them for they have forgotten me and have offered unto strange gods 7 Am not I even he that brought them out of the land of Egypt from the house of bondage but they have provoked me unto wrath and despised my counsels 8 Pull thou off then the hair of thy head and cast all evil upon them for they have not been obedient unto my law but it is a rebellious people 9 How long shall I forbear them unto whom I have done so much good 10 Many kings have I destroyed for their sakes * Ex. 14.28 Pharaoh with his servants and all his power have I smitten down 11 * Num. 21.24 Josh 8 and 10 and 12. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein and they to whom ‖ Or the gospel was first preached it was first preached entred not in because of unbelief 7 Again he limiteth a certain day saying in David To day after so long a time as it is said To day if ye will hear his voice harden not your hearts 8 For if ‖ That is Joshua Jesus had given them rest then would he not afterward have spoken of another day 9 There remaineth therefore a ‖ Or keeping of a sabbath rest to the people of God 10 For he that is entred into his rest he also hath ceased from his own works as God did from his 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest lest any man fall after the same example of ‖ Or disobedience unbelief 12 For the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper then any two-edged sword piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit and of the joynts and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight but all things are naked opened unto the eys of him with whom we have to do 14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest that is passed into the heavens Jesus the Son of God let us hold fast our profession 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities but was in all Points tempted like as we are yet without sin 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and finde grace to help in time of need CHAP. V. 1 The authority and honour of our Saviours priesthood 11 Negligence in the knowledge thereof is reproved FOr every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins 2 Who ‖ Or can reasonably bear with can have compassion on the ignorant and on them that are out of the way for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity 3 And by reason hereof he ought as for the people so also for himself to offer for sins 4 * 2 Chr. 26.18 And no man taketh this honour unto himself but he that is called of God as was Aaron 5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest but he that said unto him * Psal 2.7 Chap. 1.5 Thou art my Son to day have I begotten thee 6 As he saith also in another place * Psal 110.4 Chap. 7.17 Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec 7 Who in the days of his flesh when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death and was heard ‖ Or for his piety in that he feared 8 Though he were a Son yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered 9 And being made perfect he became the authour of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him 10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec 11 Of whom we have many things to say and hard to be uttered seeing ye are dull of hearing 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God and are become such as have need of * 1 Cor. 3.2 milk and not of strong meat 13 For every one that useth milk † Gr. hath no experience is unskilful in the word of righteousness for he is a babe 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are ‖ Or perfect of full age even those who by reason ‖ Or of an habit or perfection of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil CHAP. VI. 1 He exhorteth not to fall back from the faith 11 but to be stedfast 12 diligent and patient to wait upon God 13 because God is most sure in his promise THerefore leaving ‖ Or the word of the beginning of Christ. the principles of the doctrine of Christ let us go on unto perfection not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith towards God 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms and of laying on of hands and of resurrection of the dead and of eternal judgment 3 And this will we do if God permit 4 For * Chap. 10.26 it is impossible for those who were once enlightned have tasted of the heavenly gift and were made partakers of the holy Ghost 5 And have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to come 6 If they shall fall away to renew them again unto repentance seeing they crucifie to themselves the Son of God afresh and put him to an open shame 7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it and bringeth forth herbs meet for them ‖ Or for by whom it is dressed receiveth blessing from God 8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected and is nigh unto cursing whose end is to be burned 9 But beloved we are perswaded better things of you and things that accompany salvation though we thus speak 10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love which ye have shewed toward his name in that ye have ministred to the saints and do minister 11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end 12 That ye be not slothful but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises 13 For when God made promise to Abraham because he could sware by no greater * G●n 22.16 17. he swear by himself 14 Saying Surely blessing I will bless thee and multiplying I will multiply thee 15 And so after he had patiently endured he obtained the promise 16 For men verily swear by the greater and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife 17 Wherein God willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel † Gr. interposed himself by an oath confirmed it by an oath 18 That by two immutable things in which it was impossible for God to lie we might have a strong consolation who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us 19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul both sure and stedfast and which entreth into that within the vail 20 Whither the forerunner is for us entred even Jesus made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec CHAP. VII 1 Christ Jesus is a priest after the order of Melchisedec 11 and so far more excellent then the priests of Aarons order FOr this * Gen. 1● 18 c. Melchisedec king of
that abhor judgement and pervert all equity 10 They build up Zion with * Ezek. 12 2● Zeph. 3.3 † Heb. blouds bloud and Jerusalem with iniquity 11 The heads thereof judge for reward and the priests thereof teach for hire and the prophets thereof divine for money yet will they lean upon the LORD † Heb. saying and say Is not the LORD among us none evil can come upon us 12 Therefore shall Zion for your sake be * Jer. 26.18 plowed as a field and Jerusalem shall become heaps and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest CHAP. IV. 1 The glory 3 peace 8 kingdom 11 and victory of the church BUt * Isa 2 2 c. in the last days it shall come to pass that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains and it shall be exalted above the hills and people shall flow unto it 2 And many nations shall come and say Come and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD and to the house of the God of Jacob and he will teach us of his ways and we will walk in his paths for the law shall go forth of Zion and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem 3 ¶ And he shall judge among many people and rebuke strong nations afar off and they shall beat their swords into * Is 2.4 Joel 3.10 plow-shares and their spears into ‖ Or sithes pruning-hooks nation shall not lift up a sword against nation neither shall they learn war any more 4 But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig-tree and none shall make them afraid for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it 5 For all people will walk every one in the name of his god and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever 6 In that day saith the LORD will I assemble her that halteth and I will gather her that is driven out and her that I have afflicted 7 And I will make her that * Zeph. 3.19 halted a remnant and her that was cast far off a strong nation and the LORD * Dan. 7.14 Luk. 1.33 shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth even for ever 8 ¶ And thou O towre of the flock the strong hold of the daughter of Zion unto thee shall it come even the first dominion the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem 9 Now why dost thou cry out aloud is there no king in thee is thy counsellour perished for pangs have taken thee as a woman in travail 10 Be in pain and labour to bring forth O daughter of Zion like a woman in travail for now shalt thou go forth out of the city and thou shalt dwell in the field and thou shalt go even to Babylon there shalt thou be delivered there the LORD shall redeem thee from the hand of thine enemies 11 ¶ Now also many nations are gathered against thee that say Let her be defiled and let our eye look upon Zion 12 But they know not the thoughts of the LORD neither understand they his counsel for the shall gather them as the sheaves into the floor 13 Arise and thresh O daughter of Zion for I will make thine horn iron and I will make thy hoofs brass and thou shalt beat in pieces many people and I will consecrate their gain unto the LORD and their substance unto the Lord of the whole earth CHAP. V. 1 The birth of Christ 4 His kingdom 8 His conquest NOw gather thy self in troups O daughter of troups he hath laid siege against us they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek 2 But thou * Mat. 2.6 Joh. 7.42 Beth-lechem Ephratah though thou be little among the thousands of Judah yet out of thee shall be come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel whose goings forth have been from of old from † Heb. the days of eternity everlasting 3 Therefore will he give them up until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel 4 ¶ And he shall stand and ‖ Or ●ule feed in the strength of the LORD in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God and they shall abide for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth 5 And this man shall be the peace when the Assyrian shall come into our land and when he shall tread in our palace then shall we raise against him seven shepherds and eight † Heb. princes of men principal men 6 And they shall † Heb. ●at up waste the land of Assyria with the sword and the land of Nimrod ‖ Or with her own naked swor●● in the entrances thereof thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian when he cometh into our land and when he treadeth within our borders 7 And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a dew from the LORD as the showers upon the grass that tarrieth not for man nor waiteth for the sons of men 8 ¶ And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest as a young lion among the flocks of ‖ Or g●at● sheep who if he go through both treadeth down and teareth in pieces and none can deliver 9 Thine hand shall be lift up upon thine adversaries and all thine enemies shall be cut off 10 And it shall come to pass in that day saith the LORD that I will cut off thy horses out of the midst of thee and I will destroy thy chariots 11 And I will cut off the cities of thy land and throw down all thy strong holds 12 And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand and thou shalt have no more soothsayers 13 Thy graven images also will I cut off and thy ‖ Or statues standing images out of the midst of thee and thou shalt no more worship the work of thine hands 14 And I will pluck up thy groves out of the midst of thee so will I destroy thy ‖ Or enemies cities 15 And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury upon the heathen such as they have not heard CHAP. VI. 1 Gods controversy for unkindness 6 for ignorance 10 for injud●●e 16 and for idolatry HEar ye now what the LORD saith Arise contend thou ‖ Or with before the * Isa 1.2 mountains and let the hills hear thy voice 2 Hear ye O mountains the LORDs controversy and ye strong foundations of the earth for the LORD hath a controversy with his people and he will plead with Israel 3 O my people what have I done unto thee and wherein have I wearied thee t●stify against me 4 For I brought thee up ou● of the lan●
