Moses the servant of the LORD and of the congregation of Israel for the tabernacle of witness 7 For the sons of Athaliah that wicked woman had broken up the house of God and also all the dedicate things of the house of the LORD did they bestow upon Baalim 8 And at the kings commandment they made a chest and set it without at the gate of the house of the LORD 9 And they made † Heb. a voice a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem to bring in to the LORD the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness 10 And all the princes and all the people rejoyced and brought in and cast into the chest until they had made an end 11 Now it came to pass that at what time the chest was brought unto the kings office by the hand of the Levites and when they saw that there was much money the kings scribe and the high priests officer came and emptied the chest and took it and carried it to his place again Thus they did day by day and gathered money in abundance 12 And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the LORD and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the LORD and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the LORD 13 So the workmen wrought and † Heb. the healing went upon the work the work was perfected by them and they set the house of God in his state and strengthned it 14 And when they had finished it they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada whereof were made vessels for the house of the LORD even vessels to minister and ‖ Or pes●●●s to offer withal and spoons and vessels of gold and silver and they offered burnt-offerings in the house of the LORD continually all the days of Jehoiada 15 ¶ But Jehoiada waxed old and was full of days when he died an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died 16 And they buried him in the city of David among the kings because he had done good in Israel both towards God and towards his house 17 Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah and made obeysance to the king then the king hearkned unto them 18 And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers and served groves and idols and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass 19 Yet he sent prophets to them to bring them again unto the LORD and they testified against them but they would not give ear 20 And the spirit of God ‡ Heb. clothed came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest which stood above the people and said unto them Thus saith God Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD that ye cannot prosper because ye have forsaken the LORD he hath also forsaken you 21 And they conspired against him and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD 22 Thus Joash the king remembred not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him but slew his son and when he died he said The LORD look upon it and require it 23 ¶ And it came to pass † Heb in the revolution of the Jur. at the end of the year that the host of Syria came up against him and they came to Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of † Heb. Darmesek Damascus 24 For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men and the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers so they executed judgement against Joain 25 And when they were departed from him for they left him in great diseases his own servants conspired against him for the bloud of the sons of Jehoiada the priest and slew him on his bed and he died and they buried him in the city of David but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings 26 And these are they that conspired against him ‖ Or Jozachar 2 King 12.21 Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess and Jehozabad the son of ‖ Or S●omer Shimrith a Moabitess 27 ¶ Now concerning his sons and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him and the † Heb. s●unding repairing of the house behold they are written in the ‖ Or commentery story of the book of the kings And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XXV 1 Amaziah beginneth to reign well 3 He executeth justice on the traitours 5 Having hired an army of Israelites against the Edomites at the word of a prophet he loseth the hundred talents and dismisseth them 11 He overthroweth the Edomites 10 13 The Israelites discontented with their dismission spoil as they return home 14 Amaziah proud of his victory serveth the gods of Edom and despiseth the admonitions of the prophet 17 He provoketh Joash to his overthrow 25 His reign 27 He is slain by conspiracy AMaziah * Kin. 14.1 c. was twenty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD but not with a perfect heart 3 ¶ Now it came to pass when the kingdom was † Heb. confirmed upon him established to him that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father 4 But he slew not their children but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses where the LORD commanded saying * Deut. 24.16 2 Kin. 14.6 Jer. 31.30 Ezek 18.20 The fathers shall not die for the children neither shall the children die for the fathers but every man shall die for his own sin 5 ¶ Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together and made them captains over thousands and captains over hundreds according to the houses of their fathers throughout all Judah and Benjamin and he numbred them from twenty years old and above and found them three hundred thousand choice men able to go forth to war that could handle spear and shield 6 He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for
the God of their fathers 33 And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countreys that pertained to the children of Israel and made all that were present in Israel to serve even to serve the LORD their God And all his days they departed not † Heb. from after from following the LORD the God of their fathers CHAP. XXXV 1 Josiah keepeth a most solemn pass-over 20 He provoking Pharaoh-necho is slain at Megiddo 25 Lamentations for Josiah MOreover * 2 King 23.21 22. Josiah kept a pass-over unto the LORD in Jerusalem and they killed the pass-over on the * Ex. 12.6 fourteenth day of the first moneth 2 And he set the priests in their charges and encouraged them to the service of the house of the LORD 3 And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel which were holy unto the LORD Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders serve now the LORD your God and his people Israel 4 And prepare your selves by the * 1 Chr. 9.10 houses of your fathers after your courses according to the * 1 Chr. 23. and 24. and 25. and 2● writing of David king of Israel and according to the * Chap. ● 14 writing of Solomon his son 5 And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of † Heb. the house of the fathers the families of the fathers of your brethren † Heb. the sons of the people the people and after the division of the families of the Levites 6 So kill the pass-over and sanctifie your selves and prepare your brethren that they may do according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses 7 And Josiah † Heb. ●ffered gave to the people of the flock lambs and kids all for the pass-over-offerings for all that were present to the number of thirty thousand and three thousand bullocks these were of the kings substance 8 And his princes † Heb. ●ffered gave willingly unto the people to the priests and to the Levites Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel rulers of the house of God gave unto the priests for the pass-over-offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattel and three hundred oxen 9 Conaniah also and Shemaiah and Nethaneel his brethren and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad chief of the Levites † Heb. ●ffered gave unto the Levites for pass over-offerings five thousand small cattel and five hundred oxen 10 So the service was prepared and the priests stood in their place and the Levites in their courses according to the kings commandment according to the divisions of the families of the people to offer unto the LORD as it is written in the book of Moses and so did they with the oxen 13 And they * Exod. 12.8 9. rosted the pass-over with fire according to the ordinance but the other holy offerings sod they in pots and in caldrons and in pans and † Heb. made them run divided them speedily among all the people 14 And afterward they made ready for themselves and for the priests because the priests the sons of Aaron were busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until night therefore the Levites prepared for themselves and for the priests the sons of Aaron 15 And the singers the sons of Asaph were in their † Heb. station place according to the * 1 Chr. 25.1 c. commandment of David and Asaph and H●man and Jeduthun the kings seer and the porters * 1 Chr. 9.17.18 and 26.14 c. waited at every gate they might not depart from their service for their brethren the Levites prepared for them 16 So all the service of the LORD was prepared the same day to keep the pass-over and to offer burnt-offerings upon the altar of the LORD according to the commandment of king Josiah 17 And the children of Israel that w●re † Heb. found present kept the pass-over at that time and the feast of unleavened bread seven days 18 And there was no pass-over like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a pass-over as Josiah kept and the priests and the Levites and all Judah and Israel that were present and the inhabitants of Jerusalem 19 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah was this pass-over kept 20 ¶ * 2 Kin. 23.29 After all this when Josiah had prepared the † Heb. house temple Necho king of Egypt came up to fight against Carchemish by Euphrates and Josiah went out against him 21 But he sent embassadours to him saying What have I to do with thee thou king of Judah I come not against thee this day but against † Heb. the house of my war the house wherewith I have war for God commanded me to make haste forbear thee from medling with God who is with me that he destroy thee not 22 Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him but disguised himself that he might fight with him and hearkned not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo 23 And the archers shot at king Josiah and the king said to his servants Have me away for I am sore † Heb. made sick wounded 24 His servants therefore took him out of that chariot and put him in the second chariot that he had and they brought him to Jerusalem and he died and was buried ‖ Or among the the sepulchres in one of the sepulchres of his fathers and * Zech. 12.11 all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah 25 ¶ And Jeremiah lamented for XXXVI 1 Jehoahaz succeeding is deposed by Pharaoh and carried into Egypt 5 Jehoiakim reigning ill is carried bound into Babylon 9 Jehoiachin succeeding reigneth ill and is brought into Babylon 11 Zedekiah succeeding reigneth ill and despiseth the prophets and rebelleth against Nebuchadnezzar 14 Jerusalem for the sins of the priests and people is wholly destroyed 22 The proclamation of Cyrus THen * 2 Kin. 23.30 c. the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah and made him king in his fathers stead in Jerusalem 2
where the treasures were † Cald. made to descend laid up in Babylon 2 And there was found at ‖ Or Echatana or in a coffer Achmetha in the palace that is in the province of the Medes a roll and therein was a record thus written 3 In the first year of Cyrus the king the same Cyrus the king made a decree concerning the house of God at Jerusalem Let the house be builded the place where they offered sacrifices and let the foundations thereof be strongly laid the height thereof threescore cubits and the breadth thereof threescore cubits 4 With three rows of great stones and a row of new timber and let the expences be given out of the kings house 5 And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God which Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem and brought unto Babylon be restored and † Cald. go brought again unto the temple which is at Jerusalem every one to his place and place them in the house of God 6 Now therefore Tatnai governour beyond the river Shethar-boznai and † Cald. their societies your companions the Apharsachites which are beyond the river be ye far from thence 7 Let the work of this house of God alone let the governour of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in his place 8 Moreover † Cald. by me a decree is made I make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God that of the kings goods even of the tribute beyond the river forthwith expences be given unto these men that they be not † Cald. made to cease hindred 9 And that which they have need of both young bullocks and rams and lambs for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven wheat salt wine and oyl according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem let it be given them day by day without fail 10 That they may offer sacrifices † Cald. ●f rest of sweet savours unto the God of heaven and pray for the life of the king and of his sons 11 Also I have made a decree that whosoever shall alter this word let timber be pulled down from his house and being set up † Cald. let him be destroyed let him be hanged thereon and let his house be made a dunghil for this 12 And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem I Darius have made a decree let it be done with speed 13 ¶ Then Tatnai governour on this side the river Shethar-boznai and their companions according to that which Darius the king had sent so they did speedily 14 And the elders of the Jews builded and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo and they builded and finished it according to the commandment of the God of Israel and according to the † Cald. ●●●ree commandment of Cyrus and Darius and Artaxerxes king of Persia 15 And this house was finished on the third day of the moneth Adar which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king 16 ¶ And the children of Israel the priests and the Levites and the rest of † Cald. the sons of the transportation the children of the captivity kept the dedication of this house of God with joy 17 And offered at the dedication of this house of God an hundred bullocks two hundred rams four hundred lambs and for a sin-offering for all Israel twelve he-goats according to the number of the tribes of Israel 18 And they set the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their courses for the service of God which is at Jerusalem † Cald. according to the writ●n● * R●m 3.6 ● 9 as it is written in the book of Moles 19 And the children of the captivity kept the pass-over upon the fourteenth day of the first moneth 20 For the priests and the Levites were purified together all of them were pure and killed the pass-over for all the children of the captivity and for their brethren the priests and for themselves 21 And the children of Israel which were come again out of captivity and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the filthiness of the heathen of the land to seek the LORD God of Israel did eat 22 And kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy for the LORD had made them joyful and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God the God of Israel CHAP. VII 1 Ezra goeth up to Jerusalem 11 The gracious commission of Artaxerxes to Ezra 27 Ezra blesseth God for his savour NOw after these things in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia Ezra the son of Seraiah the son of Azariah the son of Hilkiah 2 The son of Shallum the son of Zadok the son of Ahitub 3 The son of Amariah the son of Azariah the son of Meraioth 4 The son of Zerahiah the son of Uzzi the son of Bukki 5 The son of Abishua the son of Phinehas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the chief priest 6 This Ezra went up from Babylon and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses which the LORD God of Israel had given and the king granted him all his request according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him 7 And there went up some of the children of Israel and of the priests and the Levites and the singers and the porters and the Nethinims unto Jerusalem in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king 8 And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth moneth which was in the seventh year of the king 9 For upon the first day of the first moneth † Heb. was the foundation of the going up began he to go up from Babylon and on the first day of the fifth moneth came he to Jerusalem according to the good hand of his God upon him 10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD and to do it and to teach in Israel statutes and judgements 11 ¶ Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest the scribe even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD and of his statutes to Israel 12 Artaxerxes king of kings ‖ Or To Ezra the priest a perfect scribe of the law of the God of heaven peace c. Unto Ezra the priest a scribe of the law of the God of heaven perfect peace and at such a time 13 I make a decree that all they of the people of Israel and of his priests and Levites in my realm which are minded of their own

I. 1 Josias his charge to the priests and Levites 7 A great pass-over is kept 32 His death is much lamented 34 His successours 53 The temple eity and people are destroyed 56 Therest are carried unto Babylon ANd Josias held the * 2 Kings 23.21 2 Chr. 35.1 feast of the pass-over in Jerusalem unto his Lord and offered the pass-over the fourteenth day of the first moneth 2 Having set the priests according to their daily courses being arayed in long garments in the temple of the Lord. 3 And he spake unto the Levites the holy ministers of Israel that they should hallow themselves unto the Lord to set the holy ark of the Lord in the house that king Solomon the son of David had built 4 And said Ye shall no more bear the ark upon your shoulders now therefore serve the Lord your God and minister unto his people Israel and prepare you after your families and kindreds 5 According as David the king of Israel prescribed and according to the magnificence of Solomon his son and standing in the temple according to the several dignity of the families of you the Levites who minister in the presence of your brethren the children of Israel 6 Offer the pass-over in order and make ready the sacrifices for your brethren and keep the pass-over according to the commandment of the Lord which was given unto Moses 7 And unto the people that was found there Josias gave thirty thousand lambs and kids and three thousand calves these things were given of the kings allowance according as he promised to the people to the priests and to the Levites 8 And Helkias Zacharias and ‖ Or J●●i●l Syelus the governours of the temple gave to the priests for the pass-over two thousand and six hundred sheep and three hundred calves 9 And Jeconias and Samaias and Nathanael his brother and Assabias and Ochiel and Joram captains over thousands gave to the Levites for the pass-over five thousand sheep and ‖ Or f●●e hundred calves 2 Chr. 35.9 seven hundred calves 10 And when these things were done the priests and Levites having the unleavened bread stood in very comely order according to the kindreds 11 And according to the several dignities of the fathers before the people to offer to the Lord as it is written in the book of Moses * 2 Chr. 35.13 and so of the ●●●locks and thus did they in the morning 12 And they rosted the pass-over with fire as appertaineth as for the sacrifices they sod them in brass pots and pans ‖ Or with good s●●d or willingly 2 Chr. 35.13 with a good savour 13 And set them before all the people and afterward they prepared for themselves and for the priests their brethren the sons of Aaron 14 For the priests offered the fat until night and the Levites prepared for themselves and the priests their brethren the sons of Aaron 15 The holy singers also the sons of Asaph were in their order according to the appointment * 2. Chr. 35.15 of David and Asaph of David to wit Asaph Zacharias and Jeduthun who was * 2 Chr. 35.15 the kings st●● of the kings retinue 16 Moreover the porters were at every gate it was not lawful for any to go from his ordinary service for their brethren the Levites prepared for them 17 Thus were the things that belonged to the sacrifices of the Lord accomplished in that day that they might hold the pass-over 18 And offer sacrifices upon the altar of the LORD according to the commandment of king Josias 19 So the children of Israel which were present held the pass-over at that time and the feast of sweet bread seven days 20 And such a pass-over was not kept in Israel since the time of the prophet Samuel 21 Yea all the kings of Israel held not such a pass-over as Josias and the priests and the Levites and the Jews held with all Israel that were found dwelling at Jerusalem 22 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josias was this pass-over kept 23 And the works of Josias were upright before his Lord with an heart full of godliness 24 As for the things that came to pass in his time they were written in former times concerning those

XVIII 1 The Danites send five men to seek out an inheritance 3 At the house of Micah they consult with Jonathan and are encouraged in their way 7 They search Laish and bring back news of good hope 11 Six hundred men are sent to surprise it 14 In the way they rob Micah of his priest and his consecrate things 27 They win Laish and call it Dan. 30 They set up idolatry wherein Jonathan inherited the priesthood IN * Ch. 17.6 21.25 those days there was no king in Israel and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in for unto that day all their inheritance had not ●aln unto them among the tribes of Israel 2 And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts † Heb. sons men of valour from Zorah and from Eshtaol to spy out the land and to search it and they said unto them Go search the land who when they came to mount Ephraim to the house of Micah they lodged there 3 When they were by the house of Micah they knew the voice of the young man the Levite and they turned in thither and said unto him Who brought thee hither and what makest thou in this place and what hast thou here 4 And he said unto them Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me and hath hired me and I am his priest 5 And they said unto him Ask counsel we pray thee of God that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous 6 And the priest said unto them Go in peace before the LORD is your way wherein ye go 7 ¶ Then the five men departed and came to Laish and saw the people that were therein how they dwelt careless after the manner of the Zidonians quiet and secure and there was no † Heb possessour or heir of restraint magistrate in the land that might put them to shame in any thing and they were far from the Zidomans and had no business with any man 8 And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol and their brethren said unto them What say ye 9 And they said Arise that we may go up against them for we have seen the land and behold it is very good and are ye still be not slothful to go and to enter to possess the land 10 When ye go ye shall come unto a people secure and to a large land for God hath given it into your hands a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth 11 ¶ And there went from thence of the family of the Danites out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol six hundred men † Heb. girded appointed with weapons of war 12 And they went up and pitched in Kirjath-jearim in Judah wherefore they called that place Mahaneh-dan unto this day behold it is behinde Kirjath-jearim 13 And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim and came unto the house of Micah 14 ¶ Then answered the five men that went to spy out the countrey of Laish and said unto their brethren Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod and teraphim and a graven image and a molten image now therefore consider what ye have to do 15 And they turned thitherward and came to the house of the young man the Levite even unto the house of Micah and † Heb. asked him of peace saluted him 16 And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war which were of the children of Dan stood by the entring of the gate 17 And the five men that went to spy out the land went up and came in thither and took the graven image and the ephod and the teraphim and the molten image and the priest stood in the entring of the gate with the six hundred men they were appointed with weapons of war 18 And these went into Micahs house and fetched the carved image the ephod and the teraphim and the molten image then said the priest unto them What do ye 19 And they said unto him Hold thy peace lay thine hand upon thy mouth and go with us and be to us a father and a priest is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel 20 And the priests heart was glad and he took the ephod and the teraphim and the graven image and went in the midst of the people 21 So they turned and departed and put the little ones and the cattel and the carriage before them 22 ¶ And when they were a good way from the house of Micah the men that were in the houses near to Micahs house were gathered together and overtook the children of Dan. 23 And
they cryed unto the children of Dan and they turned their faces and said unto Micah What aileth thee † Heb. that thou art gathered together that thou comest with such a company 24 And he said Ye have taken away my gods which I made and the priest and ye are come away and what have I more and what is this that ye say unto 〈◊〉 What a 〈◊〉 thee 25 And the children of Dan said unto him Let not thy voice be heard among ●s † Heb. bitter of soul 〈◊〉 a●●ry fellows run upon thee and thou lose thy life with the 〈◊〉 of thy ●●●●●shold 26 And the children of Dan went their way and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him he turned and went back unto his house 27 And they 〈◊〉 the things which Micah had made and the priest which he had and came unto Laish unto a people that were at quiet and secure and they smote them with the edge of the sword and burnt the city with fire 28 And there was no deliverer because it was far from Zidon and they had no business with any man and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob and they built a city and dwelt therein 29 And they called the name of the * Josh 13.47 city Dan after the name of Dan their father who was born unto Israel howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first 30 ¶ And the children of Dan set up the graven image and Jonathan the son of Gershom the son of Manasseh he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land 31 And they set them up Micahs graven image which he made all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh CHAP. XIX 1 A Levite geoth to Beth-lehem to feteh home his wife 16 An old man entertaineth him at Gibeah 22 The Gibeathithes abuse his concubine to death 29 He divideth her into twelve pieces to send them to the twelve tribes ANd it came to pass in those days * Ch. 17.6 18.1 21.25 when there was no king in Israel that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim who took to him † Heb. a woman a concubine or a wife a concubine a concubine out of Beth-lehein-judah 2 And his concubine played the whore against him and went away from him unto her fathers house to Beth-lehem-judah and was there ‖ Or a year and four moneths † Heb. days four moneths four whole moneths 3 And her husband arofe and went after her to speak † Heb. to her heart friendly unto her and to bring her again having his servant with him and a couple of asses and she brought him into her fathers house and when the father of the damsel saw him he rejoyced to meet him 4 And his father in law the damsels father retained him and he abode with him three days so they did eat and drink and lodged there 5 And it came to pass on the fourth day when they arose early in the morning that he rose up to depart and the damsels father said unto his son in law † Heb. Strengthen Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread and afterward go your way 6 And they sat down and did eat and drink both of them together for the damsels father had said unto the man Be content I pray thee and tarry all night and let thine heart be merry 7 And when the man rose up to depart his father in law urged him therefore he lodged there again 8 And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart and the damsels father said Comfort thine heart I pray thee And they tarried † Heb. till the day declined until after noon and they did eat both of them 9 And when the man rose up to depart he and his concubine and his servant his father in law the damsels father said unto him Behold now the day † Heb. is weak draweth towards evening I pray you tarry all night behold † Heb. it is the pitching time of the day the day groweth to an end lodge here that thine heart may be merry and to morrow get you early on your way that thou mayest go † Heb. to thy tent home 10 But the man would not tarry that night but he rose up and departed and came † Heb. to over against over against Jebus which is Jerusalem and there were with him two asses saddled his concubine also was with him 11 And when they were by Jebus the day was far spent and the servant said unto his master Come I pray thee and let us turn in unto this city of the Jebusites and lodge in it 12 And his master said unto him We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger that is not of the children of Israel we will pass over to Gibeah 13 And he said unto his servant Come and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night in Gibeah or in Ramah 14 And they passed on and went their way and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah which belongeth to Benjamin 15 And they turned aside thither to go in and to lodge in Gibeah and when he went in he sat him down in a street of the city for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging 16 ¶ And behold there came an old man from his work out of the field at even which was also of mount Ephraim and he sojourned in Gibeah but the men of the place were Benjamites 17 And when he had lift up his eyes he saw a wayfaring man in the steeet of the city and the old man said Whither goest thousand whence cornest thou 18 And he said unto him We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah toward the side of mount Ephraim from thence am I and I went to Beth-lehem-judah but I am now going to the house of the LORD and there is no man that † Heb. gather●●● receiveth me to house 19 Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses and there is bread and wine also for me and for thy hand-maid and for the young man which is with thy servants there is no want of any thing 20 And the old man said Peace be with thee howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me onely lodge not in the street 21 So he brought him into his house and gave provender unto the asses and they washed their feet and did eat and drink 22 ¶ Now as they were making their hearts merry behold the men of the city certain sons of Belial belet the house round about and beat at the door and spake to the master of the house the old man saying Bring forth the man that came into thine house that we may know him 23 And * Gen 19.6 the man the master of the

spies throughout all the tribes of Israel saying Assoon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet then ye shall say Absalom reigneth in Hebron 11 And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem that were called and they went in their simplicity and they knew not any thing 12 And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite Davids counsellour from his city even from Giloh while he offered sacrifices and the conspiracy was strong for the people increased continually with Absalom 13 ¶ And there came a messenger to David saying The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom 14 And David said unto XXII 1 David oreknowing the place of the temple prepareth abundance for the building of it 6 He instructeth Solomon in Gods promises and his duty in building the temple 17 He chargeth the princes to assist his son THen David said This is the house of the LORD God and this is the altar of the burnt-offering for Israel 2 And David commanded to gather together the strangers that were in the land of Israel and he set masons to hew wrought stones to build the house of God 3 And David prepared iron in abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates and for the joynings and brass in abundance without weight 4 Also cedar-trees in abundance for the Zidonians and they of Tyre brought much cedar-wood to David 5 And David said * Chap. 29.1 Solomon my son is young and tender and the house that is to be builded for the LORD must be exceeding magnifical of same and of glory throughout all countreys I will therefore now make preparation for it So David prepared abundantly before his death 6 ¶ Then he called for Solomon his son and charged him to build an house for the LORD God of Israel 7 And David said to Solomon My son as for me it was in my minde to build an house unto the name of the LORD my God 8 But the word of the LORD came to me saying * Chap. 28.3 Thou hast shed bloud abundantly and hast made great wars thou shalt not build an house unto my name because thou hast shed much bloud upon the earth in my sight 9 Behold a son shall be born to thee who shall be a man of rest and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about for his name shall be ‖ That is pea●●able Solomon and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days 10 * 2 Sam. 7.13 He shall build an house for my name and he shall be my son and I will be his father and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever 11 Now my son the LORD be with thee and prosper thou and build the house of the LORD thy God as he hath said of thee 12 Onely the LORD give thee wisdom and understanding and give thee charge concerning Israel that thou mayest keep the law of the LORD thy God 13 Then shalt thou prosper if thou takest heed to fulfil the statutes and judgements which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel be strong and of good courage dread not nor be dismayed 14 Now behold ‖ Or in my poverty in my trouble I have prepared for the house of the LORD an hundred thousand talents of gold and a thousand thousand talents of silver and of brass and iron without * As vers 3. weight for it is in abundance timber also and stone have I prepared and thou mayest add thereto 15 Moreover there are workmen with thee in abundance hewers and ‖ That is masons and carpenters workers of stone and timber and all manner of cunning men for every manner of work 16 Of the gold the silver and the brass and the iron there is no number Arise therefore and be doing and the LORD be with thee 17 ¶ David also commanded all the princes of Israel to help Solomon his son saying 18 Is not the LORD your God with you and hath he not given you rest on every side for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand and the land is subdued before the LORD and before his people 19 Now set your heart and your soul to seek the LORD your God arise therefore and build ye the sanctuary of the LORD your God to bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD and the holy vessels of God into the house that is to be built to the name of the LORD CHAP. VII 1 God having given testimony to Solomon prayer by fire from heaven and glory in the temple the people worship him 4 Solomons solemn sacrifice 8 Solomon having kept the feast of tabernacles and the feast of the dedication of the altar dismisseth the people 12 God appearing to Solomon giveth him promises upon condition NOw * 1 King 8.54 when Solomon had made an end of praying the * Lev. 9 24● fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt-offering and the sacrifices and the glory of the LORD filled the house 2 And the priests could not enter into the house of the LORD because the glory of the LORD had filled the LORDS house 3 And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down and the glory of the LORD upon the house they howed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement and worshipped and prassed the LORD saying For he is good for his mercy endureth for ever 4 ¶ Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the LORD 5 And king Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty and two thousand oxen and an hundred and twenty thousand sheep so the king and all the people dedicated the house of God 6 * 1 Chr. 15.16 And the priests waited on their offices the Levites also with instruments of musick of the LORD which David the king had made to praise the LORD because his mercy endureth for ever when David praised † Heb. by their hand by their ministery and the priests sounded trumpets before them and all Israel stood 7 Moreover Solomon hallowed the middle of the court that was before the house of the LORD for there he offered burnt-offerings and the fat of the peare-offerings because the brasen altar which Solomon had made was
not able to receive the burnt-offerings and the meat-offerings and the fat 8 ¶ Also at the same time Solomon kept the feast seven days and all Israel with him a very great congregation from the entring in of Hamath unto * Josh 13.3 the river of Egypt 9 And in the eighth day they made † Heb. a restraint a solemn assembly for they kept the dedication of the altar seven days and the feast seven days 10 And on the three and twentieth day of the seventh moneth he sent the people away into their tents glad and merry in heart for the goodness that the LORD had shewed unto David and to Solomon and to Israel his people 11 Thus * 1 King 9.1 c. Solomon finished the house of the LORD and the kings house and all that came into Solomons heart to make in the house of the LORD and in his own house he prosperously effected 12 ¶ And the LORD appeared to Solomon by night and said unto him I have heard thy prayer * Deut. 12.5 and have chosen this place to my self for an house of sacrifice 13 If I shut up heaven that there be no rain or if I command the locusts to devour the land or if I send pestilence among my people 14 If my people † Heb. upon whom my name is called which are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land 15 Now * Chap. 6.40 mine eyes shall be open and mine ears attent † Heb. to the prayer of this place unto the prayer that is made in this place 16 For now have * Chap. 6.6 I chosen and sanctified this house that my name may be there for ever and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually 17 And as for thee if thou wilt walk before me as David thy father walked and do according to all that I have commanded thee and shalt observe my statutes and my judgements 18 Then will I stablish the throne of thy kingdom according as I have covenanted with David thy father saying * Chap. 6.16 † Heb. there shall not be cut off to thee There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel 19 * Lev. 26.14 Deu. 28.15 But if ye turn away and forsake my statutes and my commandments which I have set before you and shall go and serve other gods and worship them 20 Then will I pluck them up by the roots out of my land which I have given them and this house which I have sanctified for my name will I cast out of my sight and will make it to be a proverb and a by-word among all nations 21 And this house which is high shall be an astonishment to every one that passeth by it so that he shall say * Deut. 29.24 Jer. 22.8 9. Why hath the LORD done thus unto this land and unto this house 22 And it shall be answered Because they forsook the LORD God of their fathers which brought them forth out of the land of Egypt and laid hold on other gods and worshipped them and served them therefore hath he brought all this evil upon them CHAP. VIII 1 Solomons buildings 7 The Gentiles which were left Solomon made tributaries but the Israelites rulers 11 Pharaohs daughter removeth to her house 12 Solomons yearly solemn sacrifices 14 He appointeth the priests Levites to their places 17 The navy fetcheth gold from Ophir ANd * King 9.10 c. it came to pass at the end of twenty years wherein Solomon had built the house of the LORD and his own house 2 That the cities which Huram had restored to Solomom Solomon built them and caused the children of Israel to dwell there 3 And Solomon went to Hamath-zobah and prevailed against it 4 And he built Tadmor in the wilderness and all the store-cities which he built in Hamath 5 Also he built Both-horon the upper and Beth-horon the nether fenced cities with walls gates and bars 6 And Baalath and all the store-cities that Solomon had and all the chariot-cities and the cities of the hors-men and † Heb. all the desire of Solomon which he desired to build all that Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem and in Lebanon and throughout all the land of his dominion 7 ¶ As for all the people that were left of the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites which were not of Israel 8 But of their children who were left after them in the land whom the children of Israel consumed not them did Solomon make to pay tribute until this day 9 But of the children of Israel did Solomon make no servants for his work but they were men of war and chief of his captains and captains of his chariots and hors-men 10 And these were the chief of king Solomons officers even two hundred and fifty that bare rule over the people 11 ¶ And Solomon * 1 King 3.1 and 7.8 brought up the daughter of Pharaoh out of the city of David unto the house that he had built for her for he said My wife shall not dwell in the house of David king of Israel because the places are † Heb. holiness holy whereunto the ark of the LORD hath come 12 ¶ Then Solomon offered burnt-offerings unto the LORD on the altar of the LORD which he had built before the porch 13 Even after a certain rate every * Exod. 29 38. day offering according to the commandment of Moses on the sabbaths and on the new-moons and on the solemn feasts * Exod. 23.14 Deut. 16.16 three times in the year even in the feast of unleavened bread and in the feast of weeks in the feast of tabernacles 14 ¶ And he appointed according to the order of David his father the * 1 Chr. 24.1 courses of the priests to their service and the Levites to their charges to praise and minister before the priests as the duty of every day required the * 1 Chr. 9 17. porters also by their courses at every gate for † Heb. so was the commandment of David the man of God so had David the man of God commanded 15 And they departed not from the commandment of the king unto the priests and Levites concerning any matter or concerning the treasures 16 Now all the work of Solomon was prepared unto the day of the foundation of the house of the LORD and until it was finished so the house of the LORD was perfected 17 ¶ Then went Solomon to Ezion-geber and to ‖ Or Elath Deut. 2.8 Eloth at the sea-side in the land of Edom. 18 And Huram sent him by the hands of his servants ships and servants that had knowledge of the sea and they went with the servants of Solomon to Ophir and
entring in of the gate of Samaria and all the prophets prophesied before them 10 And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah had made him horns of iron and said Thus saith the LORD With these thou shalt push Syria until † Heb. thou consume them they be consumed 11 And all the prophets prophesied so saying Go up to Ramoth-gilead and prosper for the LORD shall deliver it into the hand of the king 12 And the messenger that went to call Micaiah spake to him saying Behold the words of the prophets declare good to the king † Heb. with on● mouth with one assent let thy word therefore I pray thee be like one of theirs and speak thou good 13 And Micaiah said As the LORD liveth even what my God saith that will I speak 14 And when he was come to the king the king said unto him Micaiah shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battel or shall I forhear And he said Go ye up prosper they shall be delivered into your hand 15 And the king said to him How many times shall I adjure thee that thou say nothing but the truth to me in the name of the LORD 16 Then he said I did see all Israel scattered upon the mountains as sheep that have no shepherd and the LORD said These have no master let them return therefore every man to his house in peace 17 And the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat Did I not tell thee that he would not prophesie good unto me ‖ Or but for evil but evil 18 Again he said Therefore hear the word of the LORD I saw the LORD sitting upon his throne and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left 19 And the LORD said Who shall entice Ahab king of Israel that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead And one spake saying after this manner and another saying after that manner 20 Then there came out a * Job 1.6 spirit and stood before the LORD and said I will entice him And the LORD said unto him Wherewith 21 And he said I will go out and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets And the LORD said Thou shalt entice him and thou shalt also prevail go out and do even so 22 Now therefore behold the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of these thy prophets and the LORD hath spoken evil against thee 23 Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near and smote Micaiah upon the cheek and said Which way went the spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee 24 And Micaiah said Behold thou shalt see on that day when thou shalt go ‖ Or from chamber to chamber into † Heb. a chamber in a chamber an inner chamber to hide thy self 25 Then the king of Israel said Take ye Micaiah and carry him back to Amon the governour of the city and to Joash the kings son 26 And say Thus saith the king Put this fellow in the prison and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction until I return in peace 27 And Micaiah said If thou certainly return in peace then hath not the LORD spoken by me And he said Hearken all ye people 28 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead 29 And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat I will disguise my self and will go to the battel but put thou on thy robes So the king of Israel disguised himself and they went to the battel 30 Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of the chariots that were with him saying Fight ye not with small or great save onely with the king of Israel 31 And it came to pass when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat that they said It is the king of Israel therefore they compassed about him to sight but Jehoshaphat cried out and the LORD helped him and God moved them to depart from him 32 For it came to pass that when the captains of the chariots perceived that it was not the king of Israel they turned back again † Heb. from after him from pursuing him 33 And a certain man drew a bowe † Heb. in his simplicity at a venture and smore the king of Israel † Heb. between the joynts and between the b●●a●-plate between the joynts of the harness therefore he said to his chariot-man Turn thine hand that thou mayest carry me out of the host for I am † Heb. wa●e sick wounded 34 And the battel increased that day howbeit the king of Israel stayed himself up in his chariot against the Syrians until the even and about the time of the sun going down he died CHAP. XIX 1 Jehoshaphat reproved by Jehu visiteth his kingdom 5 His instructions to the judges 8 to the priests and Levites ANd Jehoshaphat the King of Judah returned to his house in peace to Jerusalem 2 And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him and said to king Jehoshaphat Shouldest thou help the ungodly and love them that hate the LORD therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD 3 Nevertheless there are * Chap. 17.1 6. good things found in thee in that thou hast taken away the groves out of the land and hast prepared thine heart to seek God 4 And Jehoshaphat dwelt at Jerusalem and † Heb. he returned and went out he went out again through the people from Beer-sheba to mount Ephraim and brought them back unto the LORD God of their fathers 5 ¶ And he set judges in the land throughout all the fenced cities of Judah city by city 6 And said to the judges Take heed what ye do for ye judge not for man but for the LORD who is with you † Heb. in the matter of judgement in the judgement 7 Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you take heed and do it for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God nor * Deu. 10.17 Job 34.19 Act. 10.34 Rom. 2.11 Eph. 6.9 Col. 3.25 1 ●ct 1.17 respect of persons nor taking of gifts 8 ¶ Moreover in Jerusalem did Jehoshaphat set of the Levites and of the priests and of the chief of the fathers of Israel for the judgement of the LORD and for controversies when they returned to Jerusalem 9 And he charged them saying Thus shall ye do in the fear of the LORD faithfully and with a perfect heart 10 And what cause soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities between bloud and bloud between law and commandment statutes and judgements ye shall even warn them that they trespass not against the LORD and so wrath come upon you and upon your brethren this do and ye shall not trespass 11 And behold Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of the LORD and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael the ruler of the house

XX. 1 Jehoshaphat in his fear proclaimeth a fast 5 His prayer 14 The prophesie of Jahaziel 20 Jehoshaphat exhorteth the people and setteth singers to praise the Lord. 22 The great overthrow of the enemies 26 The people having blessed God at Berachah return in triumph 31 Jehoshaphats reign 35 His convoy of ships which he made with Ahaziah according to the prophesie of Eliezer unhappily perished IT came to pass after this also that the children of Moab and the children of Ammon and with them other beside the Ammonites came against Jehoshaphat to battel 2 Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat saying There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria and behold they be in Hazazon-tamar which is En-gedi 3 And Jehoshaphat feared and set † Heb. ●●ja●● himself to seek the LORD and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah 4 And Judah gathered themselves together to ask help of the LORD even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD 5 ¶ And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem in the house of the LORD before the new court 6 And said O LORD God of our fathers art not thou God in heaven and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen and in thine hand is there not power and might so that none is able to withstand thee 7 Art not thou our God † Heb. t●● who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever 8 And they dwelt therein and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name saying 9 * 1 Kin. 8.17 C●ap 6.28 If when evil cometh upon us as the sword judgement or pestilence or famine we stand before this house and in thy presence for thy name is in this house and cry unto thee in our affliction then thou wilt hear and help 10 And now behold the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir whom thou * Deu. 2.9 wouldest not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt but they turned from them destroyed them not 11 Behold I say how they reward us to come to cast us out of thy possession which thou hast given us to inherit 12 O our God wilt thou not judge them for we have no might against this great company that conieth against us neither know we what to do but our eyes are upon thee 13 And all Judah stood before the LORD with their little ones their wives and their children 14 ¶ Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah the son of Benaiah the son of Jeiel the son of Mattaniah a Levite of the sons of Asaph came the spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation 15 And he said Hearken ye all Judah and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem and thou king Jehoshaphat Thus saith the LORD unto you Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude for the battel is not yours but Gods 16 To morrow go ye down against them behold they come up by the † Heb. ●s●ent cliff of Ziz and ye shall finde them at the end of the ‖ Or ●li● brook before the wilderness of Jeruel 17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battel set your selves stand ye still and see the salvation of the LORD with you O Judah and Jerusalem fear not nor be dismayed to morrow go out against them for the LORD will be with you 18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD worshipping the LORD 19 And the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korhites stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high 20 ¶ And they rose early in the morning and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa and as they went forth Jehoshaphat stood and said Hear me O Judah and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem * Isa 7.9 Beleeve in the LORD your God so shall you be established beleeve his prophets so shall ye prosper 21 And when he had consulted with the people he appointed singers unto the LORD and † Heb. praisers that should praise the beauty of holiness as they went out before the army and to say Praise the LORD for his mercy endureth for ever 22 ¶ † Heb. and in the time that they c. And when they began † Heb. in singing and praise to sing and to praise the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon Moab and mount Seir which were come against Judah and ‖ Or they smote one another they were smitten 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir utterly to slay and destroy them and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir every one helped † Heb. for the destruction to destroy another 24 And when Judah came toward the watch-tower in the wilderness they looked unto the multitude and behold they were dead bodies fain to the earth and † Heb. there was not an escaping none escaped 25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies and precious jewels which they stript off for themselves more then they could carry away and they were three days in gathering of the spoil it was so much 26 ¶ And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of ‖ That is blessing Berachah for there they blessed the LORD therefore the name of the same place was called the valley of Berachah unto this day 27 Then they returned every man of Judah and Jerusalem and Jehoshaphat in the † Heb. bead forefront of them to go again to Jerusalem with joy for the LORD had made them to rejoyce over their enemies 28 And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD 29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countreys when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel 30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet for his God gave him rest round about 31 ¶ * 1 Kin. 22 41 c. And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem his mothers name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi 32 And he walked in the way of Asa his father and departed not from it doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD 33 Howbeit the high places were not taken away
of Ahab and found the princes of Judah and the sons of the brethren of Ahaziah that ministred to Ahaziah he slew them 9 * 2 Kin. 9.27 And he fought Ahaziah and they caught him for he was hid in Samaria and brought him to Jehu and when they had slain him they buried him because said they he is the son of Jehoshaphat who fought the LORD with all his heart So the house of Ahaziah had no power to keep still the kingdom 10 ¶ * 2 Kin. 11. ● But when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead she arose destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah 11 But Jehoshabeath the daughter of the king took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him from among the kings sons that were slain and put him and his nurse in a bed-chamber So Jehoshabeath the daughter of King Jehoram the wife of Jehoiada the priest for she was the sister of Ahaziah hid him from Athaliah so that she slew him not 12 And he was with them hid in the house of God six years and Athaliah reigned over the land CHAP. XXIII 1 Jehoiada having sit things in order maketh Joash king 12 Athaliah is slain 16. Jehoiada restoreth the worship of God ANd * 2 Kin. 11.4 c. in the seventh year Jehoiada strengthned himself and took the captains of hundreds Azariah the son of Jeroham and Ishmael the son of Jehohanan and Azar ah the son of Obed and Maaseiah the son of Adaiah and Elishaphat the son of Zichri into covenant with him 2 And they went about in Judah and gathered the Levites out of all the cities of Judah and the chief of the fathers of Israel and they came to Jerusalem 3 And all the congregation made a covenant with the king in the house of God and he said unto them Behold the kings son shall reign as the LORD hath * 2 Sam. 7.12 1 Kin. 2 4. and 9.5 Ch●● 16. and 7.18 said of the sons of David 4 This is the thing that ye shall do A third part of you entring on the sabbath of the priests and of the Levites shali be porters of the † Heb. ●tres●olds doors 5 And a third part shall be at the kings house and a third part at the gate of the foundation and all the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD 6 But let none come into the house of the LORD save the priests and they that minister of the Levites they shall go in for they are holy but all the people shall keep the watch of the LORD 7 And the Levites shall compass the king round about every man with his weapons in his hand and whosoever else cometh into the house he shall be put to death but be you with the king when he cometh in and when he goeth out 8 So the Levites and all Judah did according to all things that Jehoiada the priest had commanded and took every man his men that were to come in on the saboath with them that were to go out on the sabbath for Jehoiada the priest dismissed not the courses 9 Moreover Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds spears and bucklers and shields that had been king Davids which were in the house of God 10 And he set all the people every man having his weapon in his hand from the right † Heb. shoulder side of the † Heb. house temple to the left side of the temple along by the altar and the temple by the king round about 11 Then they brought out the kings son and put upon him the crown and * Deu. 17.18 gave him the testimony and made him king and Jehoiada and his sons anointed him and said † Heb. Let the king live God save the king 12 ¶ Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king she came to the people into the house of the LORD 13 And she looked and behold the king stood at his pillar at the entring in and the princes and the trumpets by the king and all the people of the land rejoyced and sounded with trumpets also the singers with instruments of musick and such as taught to sing praise Then Athaliah rent her clothes and said † Heb. conspiracy Treason treason 14 Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host and said unto them Have her forth of the ranges and whoso followeth her let him be slain with the sword For the priest said Slay her not in the house of the LORD 15 So they laid hands on her and when she was come to the entring of the hors gate by the kings house they slew her there 16 ¶ And Jehoiada made a covenant between him and between all the people and between the king that they should be the LORDS people 17 Then all the people went to the house of Baal and brakeit down and brake his altars and his images in pieces and * Deu. 13.9 slew Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars 18 Also Jehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the LORD by the hand of the priests the Levites whom David had * 1 Chr. 24.1 distributed in the house of the LORD to offer the burnt-offerings of the LORD as it is written in the * Na. 28.2 law of Moses with rejoyting and with singing as it was ordained † Heb. by the hands of David by David 19 And he set the * 1 Chr 26 1 c. porters at the gates of the house of the LORD that none which was unclean in any thing should enter in 20 And he took the captains of hundreds and the nobles and the governours of the people and all the people of the land and brought down the king from the house of the LORD and they came through the high gate into the kings house and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom 21 And all the people of the land rejoyced and the city was quiet after that they had slain Athaliah with the sword CHAP. XXIV 1 Joash reigneth well all the days of Jehoiada 4 He giveth order for the repair of the temple 15 Jehoiada his death and honourable burial 17 Joash falling to idolatry slayeth Zechariah the son of Jehoiada 23 Joash is spoiled by the Syrians and slain by Zabad and Jehozabad 37 Amaziah succeedeth him JOash * 2 Kin. 12 1 c was seven years old when he began to reign and he reigned fourty years in Jerusalem his mothers name also was Zibeah of Beer-sheba 2 And Joash did that which was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest 3 And Jehoiada took for him two wives and he begat sons and daughters 4 ¶ And it came to pass after this that Joash was minded † Heb. to renew to repair the house of the LORD 5 And
brethren for the fierce wrath of the LORD is upon you 12 Then certain of the heads of the children of Ephraim Azariah the son of Johanan Berechiah the son of Meshillemoth and Jehizkiah the son of Shallum and Amasa the son of Hadlai stood up against them that came from the war 13 And said unto them Ye shall not bring in the captives hither for whereas we have offended against the LORD already ye intend to add more to our sins and to our trespass for our trespass is great and there is fierce wrath against Israel 14 So the armed men lest the captives and the spoil before the princes and all the congregation 15 And the men which were expressed by name rose up and took the captives and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them and arayed them and shod them and gave them to eat and to drink and an●inted them and carried all the feeble of them upon asses and brought them to Jericho * Deut. 34.8 the city of palm-trees to their brethren then they returned to Samaria 16 ¶ At that time did king Ahaz send unto the kings of Assyria to help him 17 For again the Edomites had come and smitten Judah and carried away † Heb. captivity captives 18 The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the low-countrey and of the south of Judah and had taken Both shemesh and Ajalon and Gederoth and Shocho with the villages thereof and Timnah with the villages thereof Gimzo also and the villages thereof and they dwelt there 19 For the LORD brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel for he made Judah naked and transgressed fore against the LORD 20 And Tilgath pilneser king of Assyria came unto him and distressed him but strengthned him not 21 For Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of the LORD and out of the house of the king and of the princes and gave it unto the king of Assyria but he helped him not 22 ¶ And in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against the LORD this is that king Ahaz 23 For he sacrificed unto the gods of † Heb. Darmesek Damascus which smote him and he said Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them therefore will I sacrifice to them that they may help me but they were the ruine of him and of all Israel 24 And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God and shut up the doors of the house of the LORD and he made him altars in every corner of Jerusalem 25 And in every several city of Judah he made high places ‖ Or to offer to burn incense unto other gods and provoked to anger the LORD God of his fathers 26 ¶ Now the rest of his acts and of all his ways first and last behold they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel 27 And Ahaz slept with his fathers and they buried him in the city even in Jerusalem but they brought him not into the sepul●hres of the kings of Israel and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XXIX 1 Hezekiah his good reign 3 He restoreth religion 5 He exhorteth the Levites 12 They sanctifi● themselves ●od cleanse the house of God 20 Hezekiah offereth solemn sacrifices wherein the Levites were more forward then the priests HEzekiah * 2 King 18.1 began to reign when he was five and twenty years old and he reigned nine and twenty years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Abijah the daughter of Zechariah 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD according to all that David his father had done 3 ¶ He in the first year of his reign in the first moneth opened the doors of the house of the LORD and repaired them 4 And he brought in the priests and the Levites and gathered them together into the east-street 5 And said unto them Hear me ye Levites sanctifie now your selves and sanctifie the house of the LORD God of your fathers and carry forth the filthiness out of the holy place 6 For our fathers have trespassed and done that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD our God and have forsaken him and have turned away their faces from the habitation of the LORD and † Heb. given the neck turned their backs 7 Also they have shut up the doors of the porch and put out the lamps and have not burnt incense nor offered burnt-offerings in the holy place unto the God of Israel 8 Wherefore the wrath of the LORD was upon Judah and Jerusalem and he hath delivered them to † Heb. commotion trouble to astonishment and to hissing as ye see with your eyes 9 For so our fathers have fain by the sword and our sons and our daughters and our wives are in captivity for this 10 Now it is in mine heart to make a covenant with the LORD God of Israel that his fierce wrath may turn away from us 11 My sons ‖ Or be not now deceived be not now negligent for the LORD hath * Numb 8.14 18 2 6. chosen you to stand before him to serve him and that you should minister unto him and ‖ Or offer sacrifice burn incense 12 ¶ Then the Levites arose Mahath the son of Amasai and Joel the son of Azariah of the sons of the Kohathites and of the sons of Merari Kish the son of Abdi and Azariah the son of Jehalelel and of the Gershonites Joah the son of Zimmah and Eden the son of Joah 13 And of the sons of Elizaphan Shimri and Jeiel and of the sons of Asaph Zechariah and Mattaniah 14 And of the sons of Heman Jehiel and Shimei and of the sons of Jeduthun Shemaiah and Uzziel 15 And they gathered their brethren and sanctified themselves and came according to the commandment of the king ‖ Or in the business of the LORD by the words of the LORD to cleanse the house of the LORD 16 And the priests went into the inner part of the house of the LORD to cleanse it and brought out all the uncleanness that they found in the temple of the LORD into the court of the house of the LORD And the Levites took it to carry it out abroad into the brook Kidron 17 Now they began on the first day of the first moneth to sanctifie and on the eighth day of the moneth came they to the Porch of the LORD so they sanctified the house of the LORD in eight days and in the sixteenth day of the first moneth they made an end 18 Then they went in to Hezekiah the king and said We have cleansed all the house of the LORD and the altar of burnt-offering with all the vessels thereof and the shew-bread table with all the vessels thereof 19 Moreover all the vessels which king Ahaz in his reign did cast away
in his transgression have we prepared and sanctified and behold they are before the altar of the LORD 20 ¶ Then Hezekiah the king rose early and gathered the rulers of the city and went up to the house of the LORD 21 And they brought seven bullocks and seven rams and seven lambs and seven he-goats for a * Levit. ● 14 sin-offering for the kingdom and for the sanctuary and for Judah and he commanded the priests the sons of Aaron to offer them on the altar of the LORD 22 So they killed the bullocks and the priests received the bloud and * Levit. 8.14 1● Heb. 9.21 sprinkled it on the altar likewise when they had killed the rams they sprinkied the bloud upon the altar they killed also the lambs and they sprinkled the bloud upon the altar 23 And they brought † Heb. near forth the he-goats for the sin-offering before the king and the congregation and they laid their * Levit. 4.15 hands upon them 24 And the priests killed them and they made reconciliation with their bloud upon the altar to make an atonement for all Israel for the king commanded that the burnt-offering and the sin-offering should be made for all Israel 25 * 1 Chron 16.4 and 25.6 And he set the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals with psalteries and with harps according to the commandment of David and of Gad the kings seer and Nathan the prophet for so was the commandment † Heb. by the hand of the LORD of the LORD † Heb. by the hand of by his prophets 26 And the Levites stood with the instruments of David and the priests with the trumpets 27 And Hezekiah commanded to offer the burnt-offering upon the altar and † Heb. in the time when the burnt-offering began the song of the LORD be●an also with the trumpets and with the † Heb. hands of instruments instruments ordained by David king of Israel 28 And all the congregation worshipped and the † Heb. song singers sang and the trumpeters sounded and all this continued until the burnt-offering was finished 29 And when they had made an end of offering the king and all that were † Heb. sound present with him bowed themselves and worshipped 30 Moreover Hezekiah the king and the princes commanded the Levites to sing praise unto the LORD with the words of David and of Asaph the seer and they sang praises with gladness and they bowed their heads and worshipped 31 Then Hezekiah answered and said Now ye have ‖ Or filled your hand consecrated your selves unto the LORD come near and bring sacrifices and thank offerings into the house of the LORD And the congregation brought in sacrifices and thank-offerings and as many as were of a free heart burnt-offerings 22 And the number of the burnt offerings which the congregation brought was threescore and ten bullo●ks an hundred rams and two hundred lambs all these were for a burnt-offering to the LORD 33 And the consecrated things were six hundred oxen and three thousand sheep 34 But the priests were too sew so that they could not stay all the burnt-offerings wherefore their brethren the Levites † Heb. strengthned them did help them till the work was ended and until the other priests had sanctified themselves for the Levites were more upright in heart to sanctifie themselves then the priests 35 And also the burnt-offerings were in abundance with the fat of the peace-offerings and the drink-offerings for every burnt-offering So the service of the house of the LORD was set in order 36 And Hezekiah rejoyced and all the people that God had prepared the people for the thing was done suddenly CHAP. XXX 1 Hezekiah proclaimeth a solemn pass-over on the second moneth for Judah and Israel 13 The assembly having destroyed the altars of idolatry keep the feast fourteen days 27 The priests and Levites bless the people ANd Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah and wrote letters also to Eparaim and Manasseh that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem to keep the pass-over unto the LORD God of Israel 2 For the king had taken counsel and his princes and all the congregation in Jerusalem to keep the pass-over in the second * Num. 9.10 11. moneth 3 For they could not keep it at that time because the priests had not sanctified themselves sufficiently neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem 4 And the thing † Heb. was right in the eyes of the king pleased the king and all the congregation 5 So they established a decree to make proclamation throughout all Israel from Beer sheba even to Dan that they should come to keep the pass-over unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem for they had not done it of a long time in such sort as it was written 6 So the posts went with the letters † Heb. from the ●●nd from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah and according to the commandment of the king saying Ye children of Israel turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham Isaac and Israel and he will return to the remnant of you that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria 7 And be not ye like your fathers and like your brethren which trespassed against the LORD God of their fathers who therefore gave them up to desolation as ye see 8 Now † Heb. ●arden not your necks be ye not stiff-necked as your fathers were but † Heb. give the h●nd yeeld your selves unto the LORD and enter into his sanctuary which he hath sanctified for ever and serve the LORD your God that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you 9 For if ye turn again unto the LORD your brethren and your children shall finde compassion before them that lead them captive so that they shall come again into this land for the LORD your God is * Exod. 34.6 gracious and merciful and will not turn away his face from you if ye return unto him 10 So the posts passed from city to city through the countrey of Ephraim and Manasseh even unto Zebulun but they laughed them to scorn and mocked them 11 Nevertheless divers of Asher and Manasseh and of Zebulun humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem 12 Also in Judah the hand of God was to give them one heart to do the commandment of the king and of the princes by the word of the LORD 13 ¶ And there assembled at Jerusalem much people to keep the feast of unleavened bread in the second moneth a very great congregation 14 And they arose and took away the * Chap. 28 24. altars that were in Jerusalem and all the altars for incense took they away and cast them into the brook Kidron 15 Then they killed the pass-over on the fourteenth day of the second moneth and the priests and the Levites were
ashamed and sanctified themselves and brought in the burnt-offerings into the house of the LORD 16 And they stood in † Heb. their standing their place after their manner according to the law of Moses the man of God the priests sprinkled the bloud which they received of the hand of the Levites 17 For there were many in the congregation that were not sanctified therefore the Levites had the charge of the killing of the pass-overs for every one that was not clean to sanctifie them unto the LORD 18 For a multitude of the people even many of Ephraim and Manasseh Issachar and Zebulun had not cleansed themselves yet did they eat the pass-over otherwise then it was written but Hezekiah prayed for them saying The good LORD pardon everyone 19 That prepareth his heart to seek God the LORD God of his fathers though be be not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary 20 And the LORD hearkened to Hezekiah and healed the people 21 And the children of Israel that were † Heb. found present at Jerusalem kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with great gladness and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD day by day singing with † Heb. instruments of strength loud instruments unto the LORD 22 And Hezekiah spake † Heb. to the heart of all c. comfortably unto all the Levites that taught the good knowledge of the LORD and they did eat throughout the feast seven days offering peace offerings and making confession to the LORD God of their fathers 23 And the whole assembly took counsel to keep other seven days and they kept other seven days with gladness 24 For Hezekiah king of Judah † Heb. lifted up of offered did give to the congregation a thousand bullocks and seven thousand sheep and the princes gave to the congregation a thousand bullocks and ten thousand sheep and a great number of priests sanctified themselves 25 And all the congregation of Judah with the priests and the Levites and all the congregation that came out of Israel the strangers that came out of the land of Israel and that dwelt in Judah rejoyced 26 So there was great joy in Jerusalem for since the time of Solomon the son of David king of Israel there was not the like in Jerusalem 27 ¶ Then the priests the Levites arose and blessed the peo●le and their voice was heard and the prayer came up to † Heb. the habitation of his holiness his holy dwelling-place even unto heaven CHAP. XXXI 1 The people is forward in destroying idolatry 2 Hezekiah or ●●r●th the courses of the priests and Levites and provideth for their work and maintenance 5 The peoples forwardness in offerings and tithes If Hezekiah appointeth officers to dispose of the tithes 20 The sincerity of Hezekiah NOw when all this was finished all Israel that were † Heb. found present went out to the cities of Judah and * 2 Kin● 18.4 brake the † Heb. statues images in pieces and cut down the groves and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin in Ephraim also and Manasseh † Heb. until to make an end until they had utterly destroyed them all Then all the children of Israel returned every man to his possession into their own cities 2 ¶ And Hezekiah appointed the courses of the priests and the Levites after their courses every man according to his service the priests and Levites for burnt-offerings and for peace-offerings to minister and to give thanks and to praise in the gates of the tents of the LORD 3 He appointed also the kings portion of his substance for the burnt-offerings to wit for the morning and evening burnt-offerings and the burnt offerings for the sabbaths and for the new-moons and for the set feasts as it is written in the * Num. 28. law of the LORD 4 Moreover he commanded the people that dwelt in Jerusalem to give the portion of the priests and the Levites that they might be encouraged in the law of the LORD 5 ¶ And assoon as the commandment † Heb. brake forth came abroad the children of Israel brought in abundance the first-fruits of corn wine and oyl and ‖ Or. dat●s honey and of all the increase of the field and the tithe of all things brought they in abundantly 6 And concerning the children of Israel and Judah that dwelt in the cities of Judah they also brought in the tithe of oxen and sheep and the * Levit. 27.30 Deut. 14.28 tithe of holy things which were consecrated unto the LORD their God and said them † Heb. heaps heaps by heaps 7 In the third moneth they began to lay the foundation of the heaps and finished them in the seventh moneth 8 And when Hezekiah and the princes came and saw the heaps they blessed the LORD and his people Israel 9 Then Hezekiah questioned with the priests and the Levites concerning the heaps 10 And Azariah the chief priest of the house of Zadok answered him and said Since the people began to bring the offerings into the house of the LORD we have had enough to eat and have left plenty for the LORD hath blessed his people and that which is left is this great store 11 ¶ Then Hezekiah commanded to prepare ‖ Or storehouses chambers in the house of the LORD and they prepared them 12 And brought in the offerings and the tithes and the dedicate things faithfully over which Cononiah the Levite was ruler and Shimei his brother was the next 13 And Jehiel and Azaziah and Nahath and Asahel and Jerimoth and Jozabad and Eliel and Ismachian and Mahath and Benaiah were overseers † Heb. at the hand under the hand of Cononiah and Shimei his brother at the commandment of Hezekiah the king and Azariah the ruler of the house of God 14 And Kore the son of Imnah the Levite the porter toward the east was over the free-will-offerings of God to distribute the oblations of the LORD and the most holy things 15 And † Heb. at his hand next him were Eden and Miniamin and Jeshuah and Shemaiah Amariah and Shecaniah in the cities of the priests in their ‖ Or trust set office to give to their brethren by courses as well to the great as to the small 16 Beside their genealogy of males from three years old and upward even unto every one that entreth into the house of the LORD his daily portion for their service in their charges according to their courses 17 Both to the genealogy of the priests by the house of their fathers and the Levites from twenty years old and upward in their charges by their courses 18 And to the genealogy of all their little ones their wives and their sons and their daughters through all the congregation for in their ‖ Or trust set office they sanctifie themselves in holiness 19 Also of the sons
¶ For in the eighth year of his reign while he was yet young he began to seek after the God of David his father and in the twelfth year he began * 1 Kin. 13.2 to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places and the groves and the carved images and the molten images 4 * Levit. 26.30 And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence and the ‖ Or su●-images images that were on high above them he cut down and the groves and the carved images and the molten images he brake in pieces and made dust of them and strowed it upon the † Heb. face of the graves graves of them that had sacrificed unto them 5 And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem 6 And so did he in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon even unto Naphtali with their ‖ Or mauls mattocks round about 7 And when he had broken down the altars and the groves and had beaten the graven images † Heb. to make powder into powder and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel he returned to Jerusalem 8 ¶ Now in the eighteenth year of his reign when he had purged the land and the house he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah and Maaseiah the governour of the city and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder to repair the house of the LORD his God 9 And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim and of all the remnant of Israel and of all Judah and Benjamin and they returned to Jerusalem 10 And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the LORD and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the LORD to repair and mend the house 11 Even to the artificers and builders gave they it to buy hewn ston● and timber for couplings and ‖ Or to rafter to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed 12 And the men did the work faithfully and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah the Levites of the sons of Merari and Zechariah and Meshullam of the sons of the Kohathites to set it forward and other of the Levites all that could skill of instruments of mu●ick 13 Also they were over the bearers of burdens and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service and of the Levites there were scribes and officers and porters 14 ¶ And when they ●rought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD Hilkiah the priest * 2 Kin. 22.8 c. found a book of the law of the LORD given † Heb. by the hand of by Moses 15 And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan 15 And Shaphan carried the book to the king and brought the king word back again saying All that was committed † Heb. to the hand of to thy servants they do it 17 And they have † Heb. poured out or melted gathered together the money that was found in the house of the LORD and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers and to the hand of the workmen 18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king saying Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book And Shaphan read † Heb. ●●it it before the king 19 And it came to pass when the king had heard the words of the law that he rent his clothes 20 And the king commanded Hilkiah and Ahikam the son of Shaphan and ‖ Or Athbor 2 King 2● 12 Abdon the son of Micah and Shaphan the scribe and Asaiah a servant of the kings saying 21 Go enquire of the LORD for me and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah concerning the words of the book that is found for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD to do after all that is written in this book 22 And Hilkiah and they that the king had appointed went to Huldah the prophetess the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath the son of ‖ Or H●rba● 2 King 22.14 Hasrah keeper of the † Heb. ●●●ments wardrobe now she dwelt in Jerusalem ‖ Or in the s●●●ol or in the second part in the colledge and they spake to her to that effect 23 ¶ And she answered them Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Tell ye the man that sent you to me 24 Thus saith the LORD Behold I will bring evil upon this place and upon the inhabitants thereof even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah 25 Because they have forsaken me and have burned incense unto other gods that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place and shall not be quenched 26 And as for the king of Judah who sent you to enquire of the LORD so shall ye say unto him Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard 27 Because thine heart was tend●r and thou didst humble thy self before God when thou heardest his words against this place and against the inhabitants thereof and humbledst thy self be●ore me and didst rend thy clothes and weep before me I have even heard thee also saith the LORD 28 Behold I will gather thee to thy fathers and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place and upon the inhabitants of the same So they brought the king word again 29 ¶ * 2 King 23.1 Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem 30 And the king went up into the house of the LORD and all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the Levites and all the people † Heb. som ●reat can to ●●ull great and small and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD 31 And the king stood in his place and made a covenant before the LORD to walk after the LORD and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book 32 And he caused all that were † Heb. ●●und present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God
thirty and six their mules two hundred fourty and five 67 Their camels four hundred thirty and five their asses six thousand seven hundred and twenty 68 ¶ And some of the chief of the fathers when they came to the house of the LORD which is at Jerusalem offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place 69 They gave after their ability unto the * 1 Chr. 26.20 treasure of the work threescore and one thousand drams of gold and five thousand pound of silver and one hundred priests garments 70 So the priests and the Levites and some of the people and the singers and the porters and the Nethinims dwelt in their cities and all Israel in their cities CHAP. III. 1 The altar is set up 4 Offerings frequented 7 Workmen prepared 8 The foundations of the temple are laid in great joy and mourning ANd when the seventh moneth was come and the children of Israel were in the cities the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem 2 Them stood up ‖ Or Joshua● Hag. 1.1 Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his brethren the priests and ‖ Called Zorobabe● Mat. 1.12 Luk. 3 2● Zerubbabel the son of * Mat. 1.12 Luk. 3.27 called Salathiel Shealtiel and his brethren and builded the altar of the God of Israel to offer burnt offerings thereon as it is * Deut. 12.5 written in the law of Moses the man of God 3 And they set the altar upon his bases for fear was upon them because of the people of those countreys and they offered burnt-offerings thereon unto the LORD even burnt offerings morning and evening 4 They kept also the feast of tabernacles * Exod. 23.16 as it is written and * Numb 29.12 c. offered the daily burnt-offerings by number according to the custom † Heb. the matter of the day in his day as the duty of every day required 5 And afterward offered the continual burnt-offering both of the new-moons and of all the set feasts of the LORD that were consecrated and of every one that willingly offered a free-will-offering unto the LORD 6 From the first day of the seventh moneth began they to offer burnt-offerings unto the LORD but † Heb. the temple of the LORD was not yet founded the foundation of the temple of the LORD was not yet laid 7 They gave money also unto the masons and to the ‖ Or workmen carpenters and meat and drink and oyl unto them of Zidon and to them of Tyre to bring cedat-trees from Lebanon to the sea of * Act. 9.36 Joppa according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia 8 ¶ Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Jerusalem in the second moneth began Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak and the remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem and appointed the Levites from twenty years old and upward to set forward the work of the house of the LORD 9 Then stood Jeshua with his sons and his brethren Kadmiel and his sons the sons of ‖ Or Hodavial chap. 2.40 Judah † Heb. as one together to set forward the workmen in the house of God the sons of Henadad with their sons and their brethren the Levites 10 And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals to praise the LORD after the * 1 Chr. 6.31 16.7 25 1. ordinance of David king of Israel 11 And they sung together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD because he is good for his mercy endureth for ever towards Israel And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the LORD because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid 12 But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers who were ancient men that had seen the first house when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes wept with a loud voice and many shouted aloud for joy 13 So that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people for the people shouted with a loud shout and the noise was heard afar off CHAP. IV. 1 The adversaries being not accepted in the building of the temple with the Jews endeavour to hinder it 7 Their letter to Artaxerxes 17 The decree of Artaxerxes 23 The building is hindred NOw when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that † Heb. the sons of the transportation the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel 2 Then they came to Zerubbabel and to the chief of the fathers and said unto them Let us build with you for we seek your God as ye do and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur which brought us up hither 3 But Zerubbabel and Jeshua and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel said unto them You have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God but we our selves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us 4 Then the people of the land weakned the hands of the people of Judah and troubled them in building 5 And hired counsellours against them to frustrate their purpose all the days of Cyrus king of Persia even until the reign of Darius king of Persia 6 And in the reign of † Heb. Ahashverosh Ahasuerus in the beginning of his reign wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem 7 ¶ And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote ‖ Or in peace Bishlam Mithridath Tabeel and the rest of their † Heb. societies companions unto Artaxerxes king of Persia and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue and interpreted in the Syrian tongue 8 Rehum the chancellour and Shimshai the ‖ Or secretary scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort 9 Then wrote Rehum the chancellour and Shimshai the scribe and the rest of their † Cald. societies companions the Dinaites the Apharsathchites the Tarpelites the Apharsites the Archevites the Babylonians the Susanchites the Dehavites and the Elamites 10 And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over and set in the cities of Samaria and the rest that are on this side the river and † Cald. Chien●●t at such a time 11 ¶ This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him even unto Artaxerxes the king Thy servants the men on this side the river and at such a time 12 Be it known unto
free will to go up to Jerusalem go with thee 14 Forasmuch as thou art sent † Cald. from before the king of the king and of his * Est 3.14 seven counsellours to enquire concerning Judah and Jerusalem according to the law of thy God which is in thine hand 15 And to carry the silver and gold which the king and his counsellours have freely offered unto the God of Israel whose habitation is in Jerusalem 16 * Chap. ● 25 And all the silver and gold that thou canst finde in all the province of Babylon with the free-will-offering of the people and of the priests offering willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem 17 That thou mayest buy speedily with this money bullocks rams lambs with their meat-offerings and their drink-offerings and offer them upon the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem 18 And whatsoever shall seem good to thee and to thy brethren to do with the rest of the silver and gold that do after the will of your God 19 The vessels also that are given thee for the service of the house of thy God those deliver thou before the God of Jerusalem 20 And whatsoever more shall be needful for the house of thy God which thou shalt have occasion to bestow bestow it out of the kings treasure-house 21 And I even I Artaxerxes the king do make a decree to all the treasurers which are beyond the river that whatsoever Ezra the priest the scribe of the law of the God of heaven shall require of you it be done speedily 22 Unto an hundred talents of silver and to an hundred † Cald. ●●rs measures of wheat and to an hundred baths of wine and to an hundred baths of o●l and salt without prescribing how much 23 † Heb. whatsoever is of th●● 〈◊〉 Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven let it be diligently done for the house of the God of heaven for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons 24 Also we certifie you that touching any of the priests and Levites singers porters Nethinims or ministers of this house of God it shall not be lawful to impose toll tribute or custom upon them 25 And thou Ezra alter the wisdom of thy God that is in thine hand set magistrates and judges which may judge all the people that are beyond the river all such as know the laws of thy God and teach ye them that know them not 26 And whosoever will not do the law of thy God and the law of the king let judgement be executed speedily upon him whether it be unto death or † Cald. to rooting out to banishment or to confiscation of goods or to imprisonment 27 ¶ Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers which hath put such a thing as this in the kings heart to beautifie the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem 28 And hath extended mercy unto me before the king and his counsellours and before all the kings mighty princes and I was strengthned as the hand of the LORD my God was upon me and I gathered together out of Israel chief men to go up with me CHAP. VIII 1 The companions of Ezra who returned from Babylon 15 He sendeth to Iddo for ministers for the temple 21 He keepeth a fast 24 He committeth the treasures to the custody of the priests 31 From Ahava they come to Jerusalem 33 The treasure is weighed in the temple 36 The commission is delivered THese are now the chief of their fathers and this is the genealogie of them that went up with me from Babylon in the reign of Artaxerxes the king 2 Of the sons of Phinehas Gershom of the sons of Ithamar Daniel of the sons of David Hattush 3 Of the sons of Shechaniah of the sons of Pharosh Zechariah and with him were reckoned by genealogie of the males an hundred and fifty 4 Of the sons of Pahath-moab Elihoenai the son of Zerahiah and with him two hundred males 5 Of the sons of Shechaniah the son of Jahaziel and with him three hundred males 6 Of the sons also of Adin Ebed the son of Jonathan and with him fifty males 7 And of the sons of Elam Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah and with him seventy males 8 And of the sons of Shephatiah Zebadiah the son of Michael and with him fourscore males 9 Of the sons of Joab Obadiah the son of Jehiel and with him two hundred and eighteen males 10 And of the sons of Shelomith the son of Josiphiah and with him an hundred and threescore males 11 And of the sons of Bebai Zechariah the son of Bebai and with him twenty and eight males 12 And of the sons of Azgad Johanan ‖ Or the youngest son the son of Hakkatan and with him an hundred and ten males 13 And of the last sons of Adonikam whose names are these Eliphelet Jeiel and Shemaiah and with them threescore males 14 Of the sons allo of Bigvai Uthai and ‖ Or Zaccur as some read Zabbud and with them seventy males 15 ¶ And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava and there ‖ Or pitched abode we in tents three days and I viewed the people and the priests and found there none of the sons of Levi. 16 Then sent I for Eliezer for Ariel for Shemaiah and for Elnathan and for Jarib and for Elnathan and for Nathan and for Zechariah and for Meshullam chief men also for Joiarib and for Elnathan men of understanding 17 And I sent them with commandment unto Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia and † Heb. I put words in their mouth I told them what they should say unto Iddo and to his brethren the Nethinims at the place Casiphia that they should bring unto us ministers for the house of our God 18 And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding of the sons of Mahli the son of Levi the son of Israel and Sherebiah with his sons and his brethren eighteen 19 And Hashabiah and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari his brethren and their sons twenty 20 * See chap. 2.43 Also of the Nethinims whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites two hundred and twenty Nethinims all of them were expressed by name 21 ¶ Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river Ahava that we might afflict our selves before our God to seek of him a right way for us and for our little ones and for all our substance 22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of souldiers and hors-men to help us against the enemy in the way because we had spoken unto the king saying The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him 23 So we fasted and besought

IV. 1 While the enemies seoff Nehemiah prayeth and continueth the work 7Vnderstanding the wrath and secrets of the enemy he setteth a watch 13 He armeth the labourers 19 and giveth military precepts BUt it came to pa●s that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall he was wroth and took great indignation mocked the Jews 2 And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria and said What do these feeble Jews will they † Heb. have to themselves fortifie themselves will they sacrifice will they make an end in a day will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burnt 3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him and he said Even that which they build if a fox go up he shall even break down their stone-wall 4 Hear O our God for we are † Heb. d●spite despised and turn their reproach upon their own head and give them for a prey in the land of captivity 5 And cover not their iniquity let not their sin be blotted out from before thee for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders 6 So built we the wall and all the wall was joyned together unto the hall thereof for the people had a minde to work 7 ¶ But it came to pass that when Sanballat and Tobiah and the Arabian and the Ammonites and the Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem † Heb. as●ended were made up and that the breaches began to be stopped then they were very wroth 8 And consp●red all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem and † Heb. to make an errour to it to hinder it 9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God and set a watch against them day and night because of them 10 And Judah said The strength of the bearers of burdens is decayed and there is much r●bbish so that we are not able to build the wall 11 And our adversaries said They shall not know neither see till we come in the midst among them and slay them and cause the work to cease 12 And it came to pass that when the Jews which dwelt by them came they said unto us ten times ‖ Or that from all places ●e must r●turn to us From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you 13 ¶ Therefore set I † Heb. from the lower parts of the place c. in the lower places behinde the wall and on the higher places I even set the people after their families with their swords their spears and their bowes 14 And I looked and rose up and said unto the nobles and to the rulers and to the rest of the people Be not ye afraid of them remember the LORD which is great and terrible and fight for your brethren your sons and your daughters your wives and your houses 15 And it came to pass when our enemies heard that it was known untous and God

And the rest of the people the priests the Levites the porters the singers the Nethinims and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God their wives their sons and their daughters every one having knowledge and having understanding 29 They clave to their brethren their nobles and entred into a curse and into an oath to walk in Gods law which was given † Heb. by the hand of by Moses the servant of God and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord and his judgements and his statutes 30 And that we would not give * Ex. 34 16 Deu. 7.3 our daughters unto the people of the land nor take their daughters for our sons 31 * Ex. 20.10 Lev. 23.3 Deut. 5.12 Ch. 13.15 c. I. The ma●●sty of God in g●●dness to his people and severity against his
land were at enmity with them and oppressed them and they offered sacrifices according to the time and burnt-offerings to the Lord both morning and evening 51 Also they held the feast of tabernacles as it is commanded in the law and offered sacrifices daily as was meet 52 And after that the ‖ Or daily sacrifices continual oblations and the sacrifice of the sabbaths and of the new-moons and of all holy feasts 53 And all they that had † Gr. hallowed made any vow to God began to offer sacrifices to God from the first day of the seventh moneth although the temple of the Lord was not yet built 54 And they gave unto the masons and carpenters money meat and drink with cheerfulness 55 Unto them of Sidon also and Tyre they gave cars that they should bring cedar-trees from Libanus which should be brought by flotes to the haven of Joppe according as it was commanded them by Cyrus king of the Persians 56 And in the second year and second moneth after his coming to the temple of God at Jerusalem began Zorobabel the son of Salathiel and Jesus the son of Josedec and their brethren and the priests and the Levites and all they that were come unto Jerusalem out of the captivity 57 And they laid the foundation of the house of God in the first day of the second moneth in the second year after they were come to Jewry and Jerusalem 58 ‖ See Ezra 3.9 And they appointed the Levites from twenty years old over the works of the Lord. Then stood up Jesus and his sons and brethren and Cadmiel his brother and the sons of Madiabun with the sons of Joda the son of Eliadun with their sons and brethren all Levites with one accord ‖ Or overseers or encouragers of them that wrought in the house of the Lord. setters forward of the business labouring to advance the works in the house of God So the workmen built the temple of the Lord. 59 And the priests stood arayed in their vestments with musical instruments and trumpets and the Levites the sons of Asaph had cymbals 60 Singing songs of thanksgiving and praising the Lord ‖ Or after the manner of David king of Israel according as David the king of Israel had ordained 61 And they sung with loud voices songs to the praise of the Lord because his mercy and glory is for ever in all Israel 62 And all the people sounded trumpets and shouted with a loud voice singing songs of thanksgiving unto the Lord for the rearing up of the house of the Lord. 63 * Ezra 3.12 13. Also of the priests and Levites and of the chief of their families the ancients who had seen the former house came to the building of this with weeping and great crying 64 But many with trumpets and joy shouted with loud voice 65 Insomuch that the trumpets might not be ‖ Or discerned heard for the weeping of the people yet the multitude sounded marvellously so that it was heard afar off 66 Wherefore when the enemies of the tribe of Judah and Benjamin heard it they came to know what that noise of trumpets should mean 67 And they perceived that they that were of the captivity did build the temple unto the Lord God of Israel 68 So they went to Zorobabel and Jesus and to the chief of the families and said unto them We will build together with you 69 For we likewise as you do obey your Lord and do sacrifice unto him from the days of ‖ Or Asarhaddon Chap. 4.3 Azbazareth the king of the Assyrians who brought us hither 70 Then Zorobabel and Jesus and the chief of the families of Israel said unto them It is not for us and you to build together an house unto the Lord our God 71 We our selves alone will build unto the Lord of Israel according as Cyrus the king of the Persians hath commanded us 72 But the heathen of the land lying heavy upon the inhabitants of Judea and holding them strait hindred their building 73 And by their secret plots and popular perswasions and commotions they hindred the finishing of the building all the time that king Cyrus lived so they were hindred from building for the space of two years ‖ Or Vntil the second year of Darius Ezr. 4.5 6 7. until the reign of Darius CHAP. VI. 1 The prophets stir up the people to build the temple 8 Darius is solicited to hinder it 27 But he doth further it by all meant 32 and threatneth those that shall hinder it NOw in the second year of the reign of Darius Aggeus and Zacharias the son of ‖ Or Iddo Addo the prophets prophesied unto the Jews in Jewry and Jerusalem in the name of the Lord God of Israel ‖ Or which was called on them which was upon them 2 Then stood up Zorobabel the son of Salathiel and Jesus the son of Josedec and began to build the house of the Lord at Jerusalem the prophets of the Lord being with them and helping them 3 * Ezr. 5.3 At the same time came unto them ‖ Or Ta●nai Sisinnes the governour of Syria and Phenice with ‖ Or Sh●tharhoznai Sathrabuzanes and his companions and said unto them 4 By whose appointment do you build this house and this roof and perform all the other things and who are the workmen that perform these things 5 Nevertheless the elders of the Jews obtained favour because the Lord had visited the captivity 6 And they were not hindred from building until such time as signification was given unto Darius concerning them and an answer received 7 The copy of the letters which Sisinnes governour of Syria and Phenice and Sathrabuzanes with their companions rulers in Syria and Phenice wrote and sent unto Darius To king Darius greeting 8 Let all things be known unto our lord the king that being come into the countrey of Judea and entred into the city of Jerusalem we found in the city of Jerusalem the ancients of the Jews that were of the captivity 9 Building an house unto the Lord great and new of hewn and costly stones and the timber already laid upon the walls 10 And those works are done with great speed and the work goeth on prosperously in their hands and with all glory and diligence is it made 11 Then asked we these elders saying By whose commandment build ye this house and say the foundations of these works 12 Therefore to the intent that we might give knowledge unto thee by writing we demanded of them who were the chief doers and we required of them the names in writing of their principal men 13 So they gave us this answer We are the servants of the Lord which made heaven and earth 14 And as for this house it was builded many years ago by a king of Israel great and strong and was finished 15 But when our fathers provoked God unto wrath and sinned against the Lord
of Israel which is in heaven he gave them over into the power of Nebuchodonosor king of Babylon of the Caldees 16 Who pulled down the house and burnt it and carried away the people captives unto Babylon 17 But in the first year that king Cyrus reigned over the countrey of Babylon Cyrus the king wrote to build up this house 18 And the holy vessels of gold and of silver that Nebuchodonosor had carried away out of the house at Jerusalem and had set them in his own temple those Cyrus the king brought forth again out of the temple at Babylon and they were delivered to ‖ Or Zorobabel which is also Sanabassar the ruler so as Zorobabel seemeth to be added to the text Ezra 1.8 Zorobabel and to Sanabassarus the ruler 19 With commandment that he should carry away the same vessels and put them in the temple at Jerusalem and that the temple of the Lord should be built in his place 20 Then the same Sanabassarus being come hither laid the foundations of the house of the Lord at Jerusalem and from that time to this being still a building it is not yet fully ended 21 Now therefore if it seem good unto the king let search be made among the ‖ Or rolls records of king Cyrus 22 And if it be found that the building of the house of the Lord at Jerusalem hath been done with the consent of king Cyrus and if our lord the king be so minded let him signifie unto us thereof 23 Then commanded king Darius to seek among the records at Babylon and so at Echatana the palace which is in the countrey of Media there was found a ‖ Or place roll wherein these things were recorded 24 In the first year of the reign of Cyrus king Cyrus commanded that the house of the Lord at Jerusalem should be built again where they do sacrifice with continual fire 25 Whos 's height shall be sixty cubits and the breadth sixty cubits with three rowes of hewn stones and one row of new wood of that countrey and the expenses thereof to be given out of the house of king Cyrus 26 And that the holy vessels of the house of the Lord both of gold and silver that Nebuchodonosor took out of the house at Jerusalem and brought to Babylon should be restored to the house at Jerusalem and be set in the place where they were before 27 And also he commanded that Sisinnes the governour of Syria and Phenice and Sathrabuzanes and their companions and those which were appointed rulers in Syria and Phenice should be careful not to meddle with the place but suffer Zorobabel the servant of the Lord and governour of Judea and the elders of the Jews to build the house of the Lord in that place 28 I have commanded also to have it built up whole again and that they look diligently to help those that be of the captivity of the Jews till the house of the Lord be finished 29 And out of the tribute of Celosyria and Phenice a portion carefully to be given these men for the sacrifices of the Lord that is to Zorobabel the governour for bullocks and rams and lambs 30 And also corn salt wine and oyl and that continually every year without further question according as the priests that be in Jerusalem shall signifie to be daily spent 31 That ‖ Or drink-offerings offerings may be made to the most high God for the king and for his children and that they may pray for their lives 32 And he commanded that whosoever should transgress yea or make light of any thing afore spoken or written out of his own house should a tree be taken and he thereon be hanged and all his goods seised for the king 33 The Lord therefore whose name is there called upon utterly destroy every king and nation that stretcheth out his hand to hinder or endamage that house of the Lord in Jerusalem 34 I Darius the king have ordained that according unto these things it be done with diligence CHAP. VII 1 Sisinnes and others help forward the building 5 The temple is finished and dedicated 10 The pass-over is kept THen * Ezra 6.13 Sisinnes the governour of Celosyria and Phenice and Sathrabuzanes with their companions following the commandments of king Darius 2 Did very carefully oversee the holy works assisting the ancients of the Jews and governours of the temple 3 And so the holy works prospered when Aggeus and Zacharias the prophets prophesied 4 And they finished these things by the commandment of the Lord God of Israel and with ‖ Or the decr●● the consent of Cyrus Darius and Artaxerxes kings of Persia 5 And thus was the holy house finished in † Heb. the third day Ezra 6.15 the three and twentieth day of the moneth Adar in the sixth year of Darius king of the Persians 6 And the children of Israel the priests and the Levites and other that were of the captivity that were added unto them did according to the things written in the book of Moses 7 And to the dedication of the temple of the Lord they offered an hundred bullocks two hundred rams four hundred lambs 8 And twelve goats for the sin of all Israel according to the number of the ‖ Or tribes chief of the tribes of Israel 9 The priests also and the Levites stood arayed in their vestments according to their † Heb. divisions Ezra 6.18 kindreds in the services of the Lord God of Israel according to the book of Moses and the porters at every gate 10 And the children of Israel ‖ Or with those that c. that were of the captivity held the pass-over the fourteenth day of the first moneth after that the priests and the Levites were sanctified 11 They that were of the captivity were not all sanctified together but the Levites were all sanctified together 12 And so they offered the pass-over for all them of the captivity and for their brethren the priests and for themselves 13 And the children of Israel that came out of the captivity did eat even all they that had separated themselves from the abominations of the people of the land and sought the Lord. 14 And they kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days making merry before the Lord 15 For that he had turned the ‖ Or minde counsel of the king of Assyria towards them to strengthen their hands in the works of the Lord God of Israel CHAP. VIII 1 Esdras bringeth the kings commistion to build 8 The copy of it 28 He declareth the names and number of those that came with him 61 and his journey 71 He lamenteth the sins of his people 96 and sweareth the priests to put away their strange wives ANd after these things when Artaxerxes the king of the Persians reigned came Esdras the son of Saraias the son of ‖ A●ariat Ezerias the son of Helchiah the son of Salum 2 The son of
Istalcurus and with him seventy men 41 And these I gathered together ‖ Or to the river called Ahava Ezra 8.15 to the river called Theras where we pitched our tents three days and then ‖ Or be numbred the people and the priests but found none of the sons of Levi I surveyed them 42 But when I had found there none of the priests and Levites 43 Then sent I unto Eleazar and ‖ Or Ariel Iduel and ‖ Or twenty men 49 And of the servants of the temple whom David had ordained and the principal men for the service of the Levites to wit the servants of the temple two hundred and twenty the catalogue of whose names were shewed 50 And there I ‖ Or proclaimed vowed a fast unto the young men before our Lord to desire of him a prosperous journey both for us and them that were with us for our children and for the † Heb. substance cattel 51 For I was ashamed to ask the king footmen and hors-men and conduct for safeguard against our adversaries 52 For we had said unto the king that the power of the Lord our God should be with them that seek him to support them in all ways 53 And again we besought our Lord as touching these things and found him favourable unto us 54 Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests ‖ Sere●bias and Hassibias Esebrias and Assanias and ten men of their brethren with them 55 And I weighed them the gold and the silver and the holy vessels of the house of our Lord which the king and his counsel and the princes and all Israel had given 56 And when I had weighed it I delivered unto them six hundred and fifty talents of silver and silver vessels of an hundred talents and an hundred talents of gold 57 And twenty golden vessels and † Heb. two vessels Ezra 8.27 twelve vessels of brass even of fine brass glittering like gold 58 And I said unto them Both you are holy unto the Lord and the vessels are holy and the gold and the silver is a vow unto the Lord the Lord of our fathers 59 Watch ye and keep them till ye deliver them to the chief of the priests and Levites and to the principal men of the families of Israel in Jerusalem into the chambers of the house of our God 60 So the priests and the Levites who had received the silver and the gold and the vessels brought them unto Jerusalem into the temple of the Lord. 61 And from the river Theras we departed the twelfth day of the first moneth and came to Jerusalem by the mighty hand of our Lord which was with us and from the ‖ Or dangers in the way beginning of out journey the Lord delivered us from every enemy and so we came to Jerusalem 62 And when we had been there three days the gold and silver that was weighed was delivered into the house of our Lord on the fourth day ‖ Or unto Merimoth the s●n of Vriah the priest unto Marmoth the priest the son of Iri 63 And with him was Eleazar the son of Phinees and with them were Josabad the son of Jesu and ‖ Or Noadiah the son of Bin●●●i Moeth the son of Sabban Levites all was delivered them by number and weight 64 And all the weight of them was written up the same hour 65 Moreover they that were come out of the captivity offered sacrifice unto the Lord God of Israel even twelve bullocks for all Israel fourscore and sixteen rams 66 † Heb. seventy seven lambs twelve be●goats for a sin offering Ezra 8. ●5 Threescore and twelve lambs goats for a peace offering twelve all of them a sacrifice to the Lord. 67 And they delivered the kings commandments unto the kings stewards and to the governours of Celosyria and Phenice and they honoured the people and the temple of God 68 Now when these things were done the rulers came unto me said 69 The nation of Israel the princes the priests and Levites have not put away from them the strange people of the land nor the pollutions of the Gentiles to wit of the Canaanites Hittites Pheresites Jebusites and the Moabites Egyptians and Edomites 70 * Ezra 9.2 For both they and their sons have married with their daughters and the holy seed is mixed with the strange people of the land and from the beginning of this matter the rulers and the great men have been partakers of this iniquity 71 And assoon as I had heard these things I rent my clothes and the holy garment and pulled off the hair from off my head and beard and sat me down sad and very heavy 72 So all they that were then moved at the word of the Lord God of Israel assembled unto me whilest I mourned for the iniquity but I sat still full of heaviness until the evening sacrifice 73 Then rising up from the fast with my clothes and the holy garment rent and bowing my knees and stretching forth my hands unto the Lord 74 I said O Lord I am confounded and ashamed before thy face 75 For our sins ‖ Or have abounded are multiplied above our heads and our ignorances have reached up unto heaven 76 For ever since the time of our fathers we have been and are in great sin even unto this day 77 And for our sins and our fathers we with our brethren and our kings and our priests were given up unto the kings of the earth to the sword and to captivity and for a prey with shame unto this day 78 And now in some measure hath mercy been shewed unto us from thee O Lord that there should be left us a root and a name in the place of thy sanctuary 79 And to discover unto us a light in the house

ESDRAS CHAP. I. 1 Esdras is commanded to reprove the people 24 God threatneth to cast them off 35 to give their houses to a people of more grace then they THe second book of the prophet * Ezra 7.1 Esdras the son of Saraias the son of Azarias the son of Helchias the son of ‖ Or Shallum Sadamias the son of Sadoc the son of Achitob 2 The son of Achias the son of Phinees the son of Heli the son of Amarias the son of Aziei the son of Marimoth the son of Arna the son of Ozias the son of Borith the son of Abisei the son of Phinees the son of Eleazar 3 The son of Aaron of the tribe of Levi which was captive in the land of the Medes in the reign of Artaxerxes king of the Persians 4 And the word of the Lord came unto me saying 5 Go thy way and * Isa ● ● shew my people their sinful deeds and their children their wickedness which they have done against me that they may tell their childrens children 6 Because the sins of their fathers are increased in them for they have forgotten me and have offered unto strange gods 7 Am not I even he that brought them out of the land of Egypt from the house of bondage but they have provoked me unto wrath and despised my counsels 8 Pull thou off then the hair of thy head and cast all evil upon them for they have not been obedient unto my law but it is a rebellious people 9 How long shall I forbear them unto whom I have done so much good 10 Many kings have I destroyed for their sakes * Ex. 14.28 Pharaoh with his servants and all his power have I smitten down 11 * Num. 21.24 Josh 8 and 10 and 12. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein and they to whom ‖ Or the gospel was first preached it was first preached entred not in because of unbelief 7 Again he limiteth a certain day saying in David To day after so long a time as it is said To day if ye will hear his voice harden not your hearts 8 For if ‖ That is Joshua Jesus had given them rest then would he not afterward have spoken of another day 9 There remaineth therefore a ‖ Or keeping of a sabbath rest to the people of God 10 For he that is entred into his rest he also hath ceased from his own works as God did from his 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest lest any man fall after the same example of ‖ Or disobedience unbelief 12 For the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper then any two-edged sword piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit and of the joynts and marrow and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight but all things are naked opened unto the eys of him with whom we have to do 14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest that is passed into the heavens Jesus the Son of God let us hold fast our profession 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities but was in all Points tempted like as we are yet without sin 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and finde grace to help in time of need CHAP. V. 1 The authority and honour of our Saviours priesthood 11 Negligence in the knowledge thereof is reproved FOr every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins 2 Who ‖ Or can reasonably bear with can have compassion on the ignorant and on them that are out of the way for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity 3 And by reason hereof he ought as for the people so also for himself to offer for sins 4 * 2 Chr. 26.18 And no man taketh this honour unto himself but he that is called of God as was Aaron 5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest but he that said unto him * Psal 2.7 Chap. 1.5 Thou art my Son to day have I begotten thee 6 As he saith also in another place * Psal 110.4 Chap. 7.17 Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec 7 Who in the days of his flesh when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death and was heard ‖ Or for his piety in that he feared 8 Though he were a Son yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered 9 And being made perfect he became the authour of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him 10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec 11 Of whom we have many things to say and hard to be uttered seeing ye are dull of hearing 12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God and are become such as have need of * 1 Cor. 3.2 milk and not of strong meat 13 For every one that useth milk † Gr. hath no experience is unskilful in the word of righteousness for he is a babe 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are ‖ Or perfect of full age even those who by reason ‖ Or of an habit or perfection of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil CHAP. VI. 1 He exhorteth not to fall back from the faith 11 but to be stedfast 12 diligent and patient to wait upon God 13 because God is most sure in his promise THerefore leaving ‖ Or the word of the beginning of Christ. the principles of the doctrine of Christ let us go on unto perfection not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith towards God 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms and of laying on of hands and of resurrection of the dead and of eternal judgment 3 And this will we do if God permit 4 For * Chap. 10.26 it is impossible for those who were once enlightned have tasted of the heavenly gift and were made partakers of the holy Ghost 5 And have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the world to come 6 If they shall fall away to renew them again unto repentance seeing they crucifie to themselves the Son of God afresh and put him to an open shame 7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it and bringeth forth herbs meet for them ‖ Or for by whom it is dressed receiveth blessing from God 8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected and is nigh unto cursing whose end is to be burned 9 But beloved we are perswaded better things of you and things that accompany salvation though we thus speak 10 For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love which ye have shewed toward his name in that ye have ministred to the saints and do minister 11 And we desire that every one of you do shew the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end 12 That ye be not slothful but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises 13 For when God made promise to Abraham because he could sware by no greater * G●n 22.16 17. he swear by himself 14 Saying Surely blessing I will bless thee and multiplying I will multiply thee 15 And so after he had patiently endured he obtained the promise 16 For men verily swear by the greater and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife 17 Wherein God willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel † Gr. interposed himself by an oath confirmed it by an oath 18 That by two immutable things in which it was impossible for God to lie we might have a strong consolation who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us 19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul both sure and stedfast and which entreth into that within the vail 20 Whither the forerunner is for us entred even Jesus made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec CHAP.
