priesthood_n see_v one_o only_o be_v appoint_v for_o both_o these_o office_n beside_o that_o the_o eternity_n of_o the_o priesthood_n agree_v to_o none_o but_o to_o christ_n now_o in_o the_o very_a beginning_n of_o the_o psalm_n he_o be_v place_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n which_o manner_n of_o speech_n be_v as_o much_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v that_o the_o second_o place_n be_v give_v he_o after_o the_o father_n for_o it_o be_v a_o similitude_n or_o metaphor_n by_o which_o he_o signify_v that_o he_o be_v the_o father_n lieutenant_n and_o his_o chief_n ambassador_n to_o exercise_v his_o power_n so_o as_o the_o father_n reign_v and_o govern_v yet_o by_o his_o hand_n now_o there_o be_v never_o a_o one_o among_o the_o angel_n which_o have_v so_o excellent_a and_o high_a a_o office_n and_o therefore_o it_o follow_v that_o christ_n be_v far_o more_o excellent_a than_o they_o all_o till_o i_o make_v thy_o enemy_n thy_o footstool_n because_o christ_n be_v never_o without_o enemy_n which_o fight_v against_o his_o kingdom_n it_o seem_v not_o altogether_o out_o of_o danger_n especial_o if_o we_o look_v upon_o those_o who_o endeavour_n with_o might_n and_o main_a to_o overthrow_v it_o for_o as_o they_o have_v great_a power_n and_o force_n so_o they_o want_v no_o subtlety_n nor_o politic_a devise_n but_o have_v skill_n enough_o to_o put_v in_o execution_n all_o their_o design_n with_o no_o less_o than_o a_o furious_a madness_n and_o if_o on_o the_o other_o side_n we_o shall_v with_o the_o eye_n of_o flesn_a only_a look_v upon_o the_o little_a flock_n of_o christ_n we_o shall_v think_v ever_o and_o anon_o that_o his_o kingdom_n be_v ready_a to_o fall_v to_o the_o ground_n but_o this_o promise_n dispossess_v we_o of_o all_o fear_n to_o wit_n when_o we_o hear_v that_o christ_n shall_v never_o be_v pluck_v from_o his_o seat_n but_o shall_v reign_v rather_o till_o he_o put_v all_o his_o enemy_n under_o his_o foot_n it_o be_v profitable_a therefore_o for_o we_o to_o note_v these_o two_o thing_n first_o that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n as_o long_o as_o it_o be_v in_o this_o world_n shall_v never_o be_v in_o rest_n and_o quiet_a but_o shall_v have_v many_o adversary_n which_o will_v molest_v and_o trouble_v it_o second_o let_v the_o enemy_n plot_n and_o conspire_v what_o they_o can_v vanquish_v though_o christ_n kingdom_n be_v daily_o assault_v yet_o it_o shall_v never_o be_v vanquish_v yet_o they_o shall_v never_o attain_v the_o end_n which_o they_o aim_v at_o because_o christ_n who_o be_v set_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o his_o father_n be_v not_o set_v there_o for_o a_o time_n but_o shall_v sit_v there_o till_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n therefore_o let_v all_o those_o look_n to_o be_v overthrow_v and_o tread_v under_o his_o foot_n that_o will_v not_o submit_v themselves_o as_o subject_n under_o his_o imperial_a government_n now_o if_o it_o be_v demand_v whether_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n shall_v end_v after_o he_o have_v subdue_v and_o destroy_v all_o his_o enemy_n i_o answer_v it_o be_v certain_a that_o it_o shall_v be_v perpetual_a but_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o saint_n paul_n set_v it_o they_o and_o christ_n may_v be_v the_o better_o understand_v true_a it_o be_v that_o in_o call_v they_o spirit_n you_o may_v therein_o see_v a_o title_n of_o great_a excellency_n for_o in_o this_o respect_n they_o be_v
have_v he_o ordain_v that_o priest_n shall_v be_v create_v to_o this_o end_n although_o the_o pope_n then_o ordain_v his_o shaveling_n for_o to_o offer_v sacrifice_n father_n christ_n will_v not_o run_v before_o he_o be_v send_v but_o wait_v for_o a_o call_n from_o his_o father_n the_o apostle_n say_v that_o we_o be_v not_o to_o hold_v they_o for_o lawful_a unless_o peradventure_o they_o have_v liberty_n of_o the_o church_n be_v oppress_v whereby_o it_o appear_v that_o the_o great_a and_o chief_a fault_n be_v in_o the_o kind_n of_o the_o office_n that_o be_v to_o wit_n when_o man_n take_v upon_o they_o of_o themselves_o to_o invent_v a_o call_n in_o the_o church_n which_o god_n have_v no_o way_n command_v so_o much_o the_o less_o than_o be_v those_o priest_n which_o the_o pope_n have_v seem_v that_o this_o sentence_n be_v far_o fetch_v for_o although_o it_o be_v grant_v that_o christ_n be_v beget_v of_o god_n the_o father_n do_v that_o conclude_v therefore_o that_o he_o be_v ordain_v a_o priest_n by_o he_o also_o but_o if_o we_o consider_v to_o what_o end_n christ_n be_v reveal_v to_o the_o world_n we_o shall_v easy_o perceive_v that_o this_o quality_n do_v necessary_o appertain_v unto_o he_o but_o withal_o we_o must_v also_o call_v that_o again_o to_o mind_n which_o we_o have_v say_v in_o the_o first_o chapter_n to_o wit_n that_o this_o generation_n of_o christ_n whereof_o the_o psalm_n speak_v be_v a_o testimony_n that_o the_o father_n have_v give_v he_o to_o man_n wherefore_o this_o word_n be_v not_o put_v here_o to_o signify_v a_o mutual_a relation_n between_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n but_o be_v rather_o to_o be_v refer_v unto_o man_n to_o who_o he_o be_v manifest_v after_o a_o high_a and_o excellent_a manner_n but_o what_o be_v it_o that_o god_n have_v manifest_v unto_o we_o in_o his_o son_n be_v it_o without_o honour_n or_o without_o any_o power_n at_o all_o nay_o have_v he_o not_o rather_o manifest_v he_o to_o be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o be_v fit_n to_o be_v the_o mediator_n between_o god_n and_o man_n and_o therefore_o this_o generation_n or_o beget_n contain_v also_o the_o priesthood_n as_o also_o in_o another_o place_n he_o say_v etc._n etc._n verse_n 6_o now_o the_o apostle_n do_v more_o clear_o express_v his_o meaning_n it_o be_v a_o excellent_a place_n and_o worthy_a of_o our_o observation_n and_o so_o be_v the_o whole_a psalm_n itself_o out_o of_o which_o it_o be_v take_v for_o there_o be_v scarce_o to_o be_v find_v a_o more_o manifest_a pprophecy_n either_o of_o the_o eternal_a priesthood_n or_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n than_o this_o and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o jew_n labour_n with_o might_n and_o main_a to_o pick_v quarrel_n on_o every_o side_n to_o darken_v the_o glory_n of_o christ_n but_o they_o gain_v nothing_o by_o it_o for_o whereas_o they_o draw_v that_o which_o be_v there_o speak_v to_o david_n as_o if_o it_o be_v he_o that_o shall_v be_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n it_o be_v too_o blockish_a a_o impudency_n we_o know_v it_o be_v utter_o unlawful_a for_o king_n to_o meddle_v with_o the_o priesthood_n and_o therefore_o vzziah_n for_o this_o only_a crime_n to_o wit_n for_o usurp_v this_o office_n which_o no_o way_n belong_v unto_o he_o do_v so_o provoke_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o he_o be_v strike_v with_o leprosy_n 2._o chro._n 26.18_o it_o be_v certain_a therefore_o that_o this_o be_v not_o mean_v of_o the_o person_n of_o david_n nor_o of_o any_o of_o the_o king_n which_o succeed_v he_o if_o they_o reply_v that_o prince_n be_v sometime_o call_v by_o the_o name_n cohenim_n which_o be_v here_o use_v i_o confess_v it_o but_o withal_o i_o deny_v that_o this_o agree_v with_o this_o present_a place_n for_o the_o comparison_n leave_v no_o ambiguity_n melchizedec_n be_v the_o priest_n of_o god_n the_o psalm_n witness_v that_o this_o king_n which_o he_o have_v place_v at_o his_o right_a hand_n shall_v be_v cohem_n after_o the_o order_n of_o melchizedec_n who_o see_v not_o that_o this_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o priesthood_n for_o it_o be_v a_o very_a rare_a example_n &_o scarce_o to_o be_v find_v that_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v priest_n and_o king_n together_o at_o the_o least_o a_o thing_n new_a and_o unheard_a of_o among_o the_o people_n of_o god_n therefore_o he_o propose_v melchisedec_n for_o a_o example_n of_o the_o messiah_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v the_o royal_a dignity_n shall_v not_o hinder_v he_o from_o exercise_v the_o office_n of_o the_o priest_n also_o why_o because_o the_o figure_n be_v foreshow_v in_o melchisedec_n and_o true_o those_o among_o the_o jew_n which_o be_v not_o altogether_o impudent_a do_v agree_v that_o this_o be_v here_o speak_v of_o the_o messiah_n moreover_o they_o doubt_v not_o but_o these_o word_n do_v tend_v to_o the_o praise_n and_o magnify_v of_o the_o priesthood_n whereas_o the_o greek_n have_v translate_v after_o the_o order_n in_o the_o hebrew_n it_o be_v word_n for_o word_n as_o or_o according_a to_o the_o form_n or_o after_o the_o fashion_n of_o which_o confirm_v my_o former_a speech_n to_o wit_n because_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n usual_a among_o the_o people_n that_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v king_n and_o priest_n both_o together_o he_o therefore_o set_v this_o ancient_a example_n before_o they_o by_o which_o the_o messiah_n be_v figure_v as_o for_o the_o rest_n the_o apostle_n will_v handle_v it_o more_o particular_o in_o the_o progress_n of_o the_o text_n 7_o who_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o flesh_n do_v offer_v uppraier_n and_o supplication_n with_o strong_a cry_v and_o tear_n unto_o he_o that_o be_v able_a to_o save_v he_o from_o death_n and_o be_v also_o hear_v in_o that_o which_o he_o fear_v 8_o and_o though_o he_o be_v the_o son_n yet_o learn_v be_v obedience_n by_o the_o thing_n which_o he_o suffer_v 9_o and_o be_v consecrate_v be_v make_v the_o author_n of_o eternal_a salnation_n unto_o all_o they_o that_o obey_v he_o 10_o and_o be_v call_v of_o god_n a_o high_a priest_n after_o the_o order_n of_o melchisedec_n 11_o of_o who_o we_o have_v many_o thing_n to_o speak_v which_o be_v hard_a to_o be_v utter_v because_o you_o be_v dull_a of_o hear_v who_o in_o the_o day_n etc._n etc._n verse_n 7_o because_o the_o outward_a form_n and_o beauty_n of_o christ_n be_v often_o diffigure_v by_o the_o cross_n when_o man_n consider_v not_o to_o what_o end_n he_o be_v humble_v and_o abase_v the_o apostle_n here_o again_o teach_v that_o which_o he_o have_v touch_v before_o to_o wit_n that_o there_o shine_v a_o marucilous_a goodness_n of_o he_o
that_o this_o priesthood_n of_o christ_n be_v perpetual_a the_o carnal_a commandment_n be_v take_v for_o the_o bodily_a ceremony_n that_o be_v to_o say_v outward_a we_o know_v with_o what_o solemn_a observation_n both_o aaron_n and_o his_o child_n be_v ordain_v priest_n now_o that_o which_o be_v fulfil_v in_o christ_n by_o a_o secret_a and_o heavenly_a power_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v figure_v in_o the_o institution_n of_o aaron_n by_o oil_n by_o diverse_a garment_n by_o sprinkle_v with_o blood_n and_o other_o earthly_a ceremony_n now_o this_o kind_n of_o observation_n in_o ordain_v the_o priesthood_n be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o that_o priesthood_n whereof_o it_o follow_v that_o even_o the_o priesthood_n itself_o be_v subject_a to_o change_v although_o as_o we_o shall_v see_v afterward_o the_o priesthood_n be_v not_o so_o carnal_a that_o it_o be_v not_o also_o spiritual_a but_o the_o apostle_n have_v respect_n only_o to_o that_o difference_n which_o be_v between_o christ_n and_o aaron_n so_o then_o howsoever_o the_o signification_n of_o the_o shadow_n be_v spiritual_a notwithstanding_o the_o shadow_n themselves_o be_v right_o term_v earthly_a because_o they_o consist_v of_o the_o element_n of_o this_o world_n publish_v a_o long_a time_n before_o david_n he_o be_v then_o in_o his_o kingdom_n when_o he_o pronounce_v this_o prophecy_n of_o the_o create_v of_o a_o new_a priest_n this_o be_v then_o a_o new_a law_n which_o disannul_v the_o former_a for_o the_o law_n make_v nothing_o perfect_a ver._n 19_o etc._n etc._n because_o he_o have_v speak_v somewhat_o harsh_o of_o the_o law_n he_o now_o sweeten_v this_o sharpness_n &_o correct_v it_o as_o it_o be_v for_o he_o grant_n some_o profit_n to_o be_v in_o it_o that_o be_v that_o it_o show_v the_o way_n by_o which_o man_n may_v come_v to_o the_o end_n of_o their_o salvation_n yet_o notwithstanding_o even_o that_o be_v far_o off_o from_o perfection_n thus_o the_o apostle_n reason_n then_o the_o law_n give_v but_o a_o entrance_n therefore_o it_o be_v needful_a that_o some_o thing_n of_o more_o perfection_n shall_v succeed_v and_o come_v after_o for_o the_o child_n of_o god_n be_v not_o always_o to_o stay_v themselves_o in_o the_o rudiment_n of_o child_n by_o this_o word_n of_o bring_v in_o he_o mean_v that_o there_o be_v somewhat_o in_o the_o law_n in_o regard_n of_o a_o preparation_n even_o as_o child_n have_v little_a beginning_n give_v they_o to_o prepare_v they_o thereby_o afterward_o to_o attain_v to_o a_o high_a knowledge_n but_o because_o the_o particle_n epi_n whereof_o the_o greek_a word_n be_v compose_v signify_v a_o follow_a when_o one_o thing_n succeed_v another_o i_o have_v think_v good_a to_o translate_v but_o be_v come_v in_o or_o be_v add_v for_o in_o my_o opinion_n he_o put_v two_o introduction_n the_o first_o in_o the_o figure_n of_o melchisedec_n the_o second_o in_o the_o law_n which_o be_v last_o in_o regard_n of_o time_n now_o by_o this_o word_n law_n he_o mean_v the_o leviticall_a priesthood_n which_o come_v in_o after_o the_o priesthood_n of_o melchisedec_n by_o a_o better_a hope_n he_o mean_v the_o state_n of_o the_o faithful_a under_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n and_o withal_o he_o have_v some_o respect_n to_o those_o of_o the_o father_n who_o not_o content_v themselves_o with_o their_o present_a estate_n aspire_v to_o one_o further_o off_o and_o thereof_o it_o come_v that_o christ_n say_v many_o king_n and_o prophet_n have_v desire_v to_o see_v the_o thing_n which_o you_o see_v luk._n 10.24_o wherefore_o the_o law_n as_o a_o schoolmaster_n lead_v they_o by_o the_o hand_n pointing_z out_o a_o further_a thing_n unto_o they_o by_o which_o we_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n here_o be_v a_o close_a antithesis_fw-la between_o we_o and_o the_o father_n for_o herein_o we_o be_v promote_v to_o a_o more_o excellent_a dignity_n than_o they_o because_o god_n now_o communicate_v himself_o familiar_o unto_o we_o whereas_o he_o only_o appear_v to_o they_o dark_o and_o a_o far_o off_o and_o this_o be_v a_o allude_v to_o the_o form_n of_o the_o tabernacle_n or_o of_o the_o temple_n for_o the_o people_n remain_v far_o off_o in_o the_o court_n and_o none_o approach_v near_o unto_o the_o sanctuary_n but_o the_o priest_n and_o as_o touch_v the_o inward_a sanctuary_n none_o enter_v thereinto_o but_o the_o high_a priest_n but_o since_o the_o tabernacle_n be_v take_v away_o god_n do_v familiar_o manifest_v himself_o unto_o we_o which_o he_o do_v not_o to_o the_o father_n he_o then_o who_o yet_o hold_v or_o any_o way_n prefer_v the_o shadow_n of_o the_o law_n he_o not_o only_o thereby_o darken_v the_o glory_n of_o christ_n but_o also_o deprive_v we_o of_o a_o singular_a benefit_n because_o as_o much_o as_o in_o he_o be_v he_o place_v a_o wall_n of_o separation_n again_o between_o god_n and_o we_o to_o the_o approach_n towards_o which_o bounty_n and_o liberality_n the_o way_n be_v now_o make_v plain_a for_o we_o by_o the_o gospel_n whosoever_o therefore_o yet_o stick_v in_o these_o ceremony_n he_o witting_o deprive_v himself_o of_o this_o great_a benefit_n of_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n be_v not_o without_o a_o oath_n verse_n 20_o this_o be_v a_o argument_n show_v why_o the_o law_n be_v to_o give_v place_n to_o the_o gospel_n to_o wit_n because_o god_n prefer_v the_o priesthood_n of_o christ_n before_o aaron_n so_o that_o for_o the_o honour_n thereof_o he_o be_v content_a to_o confirm_v it_o with_o a_o oath_n for_o when_o he_o ordain_v the_o priest_n in_o old_a time_n he_o use_v no_o oath_n but_o as_o touch_v christ_n it_o be_v say_v the_o lord_n have_v swear_v which_o doubtless_o be_v do_v to_o the_o end_n his_o priesthood_n shall_v be_v adorn_v and_o also_o to_o show_v the_o excellency_n thereof_o we_o see_v the_o reason_n why_o he_o allege_v the_o psalm_n once_o again_o to_o wit_n to_o the_o end_n we_o shall_v know_v that_o in_o regard_n of_o god_n oath_n more_o dignity_n be_v attribute_v to_o the_o priesthood_n of_o christ_n than_o to_o any_o other_o now_o we_o be_v to_o remember_v this_o principle_n again_o that_o the_o priest_n be_v create_v to_o be_v a_o surety_n of_o the_o covenant_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n the_o apostle_n conclude_v that_o the_o covenant_n which_o god_n make_v with_o we_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o christ_n be_v much_o more_o excellent_a than_o the_o old_a covenant_n whereof_o moses_n be_v the_o mediator_n 23_o and_o among_o they_o many_o be_v make_v priest_n because_o they_o be_v not_o suffer_v to_o endure_v by_o reason_n
