the_o scripture_n which_o affirm_v it_o over_o and_o over_o and_o i_o do_v not_o think_v any_o strong_a argument_n can_v be_v bring_v to_o prove_v a_o thing_n than_o that_o the_o most_o emphatical_a expression_n be_v so_o often_o apply_v to_o that_o purpose_n by_o such_o person_n who_o use_v all_o sincerity_n and_o plainness_n so_o that_o this_o matter_n as_o to_o the_o scripture_n be_v clear_a if_o any_o thing_n can_v be_v make_v so_o and_o if_o nothing_o can_v i_o can_v see_v how_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o have_v a_o write_a rule_n of_o faith_n since_o all_o write_n be_v capable_a by_o ambiguity_n of_o word_n and_o phrase_n by_o the_o different_a use_n of_o particle_n and_o transposition_n of_o letter_n and_o syllable_n of_o very_o different_a interpretation_n but_o this_o be_v not_o my_o present_a business_n which_o be_v rather_o to_o consider_v the_o natural_a sense_n and_o reason_n of_o mankind_n as_o to_o this_o matter_n we_o can_v in_o reason_n suppose_v any_o such_o passion_n in_o a_o infinite_o perfect_a be_v as_o that_o which_o we_o call_v wrath_n and_o anger_n in_o men._n for_o that_o be_v a_o violent_a perturbation_n arise_v from_o surprise_n and_o indignation_n but_o there_o can_v be_v no_o disorder_n or_o surprise_n in_o a_o be_v of_o infinite_a wisdom_n therefore_o wrath_n in_o god_n must_v suppose_v two_o thing_n 1._o a_o just_a cause_n of_o displeasure_n give_v by_o we_o 2._o such_o a_o just_a displeasure_n follow_v upon_o it_o as_o will_v end_v in_o the_o severe_a punishment_n of_o offender_n if_o it_o be_v not_o remove_v now_o whether_o there_o be_v a_o just_a cause_n of_o displeasure_n or_o not_o must_v depend_v upon_o the_o natural_a difference_n of_o good_a and_o evil._n and_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o any_o one_o who_o exercise_v his_o reason_n can_v judge_v amiss_o in_o this_o matter_n not_o that_o all_o the_o difference_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a be_v equal_o clear_a for_o all_o proposition_n in_o mathematics_n be_v not_o so_o but_o it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o our_o purpose_n that_o the_o general_a principle_n be_v so_o and_o the_o great_a instance_n so_o that_o no_o man_n can_v think_v that_o he_o act_v as_o much_o according_a to_o reason_n in_o one_o as_o the_o other_o and_o can_v any_o one_o of_o common_a sense_n imagine_v god_n to_o be_v as_o well_o please_v with_o he_o who_o blaspheme_v his_o name_n and_o despise_v his_o service_n and_o hate_v religion_n as_o with_o one_o that_o fear_v and_o honour_n he_o and_o endeavour_n to_o please_v he_o can_v he_o be_v as_o well_o please_v with_o he_o that_o assassin_n his_o parent_n as_o with_o he_o that_o obey_v they_o with_o he_o that_o rob_v and_o defraud_n his_o neighbour_n as_o with_o he_o that_o relieve_v he_o in_o his_o necessity_n with_o he_o who_o subdue_v his_o disorderly_a passion_n as_o with_o he_o that_o give_v way_n to_o they_o with_o he_o who_o be_v cruel_a inhuman_a and_o perfidious_a as_o with_o he_o that_o be_v faithful_a and_o just_a and_o compassionate_a these_o be_v but_o some_o of_o the_o instance_n of_o the_o difference_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a but_o they_o be_v so_o plain_a and_o notorious_a that_o a_o man_n must_v renounce_v the_o common_a principle_n of_o humanity_n who_o do_v not_o own_v they_o and_o to_o say_v there_o be_v no_o such_o difference_n because_o there_o have_v be_v mistake_v and_o dispute_v about_o some_o thing_n account_v good_a and_o evil_a be_v as_o absurd_a as_o to_o say_v there_o be_v no_o difference_n between_o day_n and_o night_n because_o in_o the_o twilight_n it_o be_v hard_o to_o distinguish_v they_o but_o if_o there_o be_v such_o a_o real_a difference_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o humane_a action_n and_o god_n be_v a_o strict_a observer_n of_o they_o he_o be_v a_o god_n of_o infinite_a holiness_n and_o justice_n can_v but_o be_v offend_v with_o mankind_n wilful_a omission_n of_o what_o they_o know_v to_o be_v good_a and_o commission_n of_o what_o they_o know_v to_o be_v evil_a but_o here_o we_o must_v distinguish_v between_o god_n displeasure_n against_o the_o action_n and_o against_o the_o person_n who_o commit_v they_o the_o former_a be_v a_o necessary_a consequent_a upon_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n and_o can_v never_o be_v remove_v for_o god_n be_v irreconcilable_a to_o sin_n but_o those_o who_o commit_v sin_n be_v his_o creature_n and_o therefore_o capable_a of_o mercy_n and_o forgiveness_n there_o be_v always_o a_o desert_n of_o punishment_n follow_v upon_o sin_n but_o there_o be_v no_o inseparable_a connection_n between_o the_o sin_n and_o the_o punishment_n for_o the_o great_a and_o wise_a governor_n of_o the_o world_n act_v not_o by_o necessity_n of_o nature_n in_o punish_v sinner_n but_o by_o the_o method_n of_o wisdom_n and_o justice_n and_o if_o the_o save_n of_o sinner_n upon_o their_o repentance_n can_v be_v make_v agreeable_a to_o these_o such_o be_v the_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n to_o his_o creature_n that_o there_o be_v great_a reason_n to_o hope_v for_o a_o reconciliation_n for_o although_o god_n be_v displease_v he_o be_v not_o implacable_a although_o he_o be_v just_o provoke_v to_o punish_v sinner_n yet_o there_o be_v no_o absolute_a necessity_n that_o he_o shall_v nor_o any_o irreversible_a decree_n that_o he_o will_v do_v it_o and_o therefore_o notwithstanding_o this_o displeasure_n of_o god_n there_o be_v a_o way_n still_o leave_v open_a for_o reconciliation_n which_o lead_v to_o the_o next_o iv._o the_o four_o principle_n be_v that_o if_o god_n be_v thus_o displease_v with_o the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n and_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o possibility_n of_o reconciliation_n between_o god_n and_o they_o he_o alone_o be_v the_o most_o proper_a and_o competent_a judge_n on_o what_o term_n this_o reconciliation_n may_v be_v obtain_v for_o be_v both_o the_o offend_a party_n and_o the_o supreme_a governor_n he_o have_v the_o sole_a right_n on_o both_o account_n there_o can_v be_v to_o hope_v that_o he_o will_v because_o he_o be_v merciful_a and_o thus_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o a_o consider_a man_n to_o satisfy_v his_o own_o mind_n as_o to_o god_n forgive_n his_o sin_n unless_o he_o be_v some_o way_n assure_v from_o himself_o that_o he_o will_v do_v it_o and_o therefore_o a_o particular_a revelation_n in_o this_o case_n must_v be_v make_v if_o god_n design_n to_o bring_v man_n to_o repentance_n by_o the_o hope_n of_o forgiveness_n but_o mere_a repentance_n can_v never_o make_v any_o satisfaction_n to_o god_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o his_o innocent_a person_n in_o the_o world_n be_v it_o mere_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o pain_n of_o death_n which_o he_o be_v to_o undergo_v that_o be_v impossible_a consider_v the_o assurance_n which_o he_o have_v of_o so_o glorious_a a_o reward_n so_o soon_o follow_v after_o when_o so_o many_o martyr_n endure_v such_o exquisite_a torment_n for_o his_o sake_n without_o any_o such_o disturbance_n or_o be_v there_o be_v inclination_n agreeable_a to_o it_o and_o these_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o dictate_v of_o the_o mind_n all_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o flesh_n will_v appear_v to_o come_v from_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh._n 2._o the_o frequent_a commission_n of_o the_o same_o sin_n will_v be_v lay_v upon_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o flesh._n for_o the_o generality_n of_o mankind_n do_v for_o they_o he_o that_o have_v go_v so_o far_o as_o not_o mere_o to_o lament_v his_o folly_n and_o to_o abhor_v his_o wickedness_n but_o to_o make_v solemn_a vow_n and_o promise_n and_o resolution_n never_o more_o to_o return_v to_o the_o practice_n of_o they_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o conceive_v that_o such_o a_o one_o shall_v fall_v into_o his_o sin_n again_o with_o his_o whole_a mind_n and_o soul_n for_o the_o light_n of_o conscience_n when_o it_o be_v once_o thorough_o kindle_v be_v not_o easy_o put_v out_o it_o be_v a_o secret_a fire_n which_o burn_v inward_a and_o can_v hardly_o be_v drunkenness_n revel_v and_o such_o like_a which_o be_v proper_o sin_v of_o the_o flesh._n of_o the_o which_o i_o tell_v you_o before_o as_o i_o have_v also_o tell_v you_o in_o time_n past_a that_o they_o which_o do_v such_o thing_n shall_v not_o inherit_v 21._o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o in_o another_o place_n for_o this_o you_o know_v that_o no_o whoremonger_n 5._o nor_o unclean_a aught_o to_o have_v govern_v and_o keep_v under_o the_o law_n of_o their_o member_n that_o other_o by_o the_o same_o assistance_n which_o be_v offer_v to_o they_o have_v crucify_v the_o flesh_n with_o resolve_v may_v fall_v through_o the_o infirmity_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o they_o do_v so_o upon_o no_o great_a temptation_n as_o appear_v by_o st._n peter_n deny_v his_o master_n in_o so_o of_o the_o divine_a nature_n as_o we_o ought_v to_o do_v we_o must_v have_v a_o great_a care_n lest_o we_o attribute_v any_o thing_n to_o god_n which_o look_v like_o weakness_n and_o imperfection_n as_o the_o motion_n and_o change_n of_o passion_n do_v therefore_o to_o understand_v his_o pity_n and_o compassion_n and_o reconciliation_n to_o penitent_a sinner_n we_o must_v first_o know_v what_o his_o anger_n and_o displeasure_n against_o sinner_n mean_v some_o think_v that_o epicurus_n do_v in_o earnest_n 4._o believe_v a_o god_n but_o he_o be_v therefore_o force_v to_o deny_v providence_n because_o he_o can_v not_o conceive_v that_o the_o government_n of_o the_o world_n can_v be_v manage_v without_o such_o resentment_n as_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o complete_a happiness_n of_o the_o divine_a be_v and_o therefore_o he_o rather_o choose_v to_o make_v he_o careless_a and_o easy_a than_o active_a and_o liable_a to_o passion_n the_o stoic_n attribute_v to_o god_n all_o that_o be_v good_a and_o kind_a and_o oblige_a but_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n endure_v that_o ever_o he_o shall_v be_v say_v to_o be_v angry_a or_o displease_v which_o doctrine_n do_v in_o effect_n overthrow_v providence_n with_o respect_n to_o moral_a action_n as_o much_o as_o the_o epicurean_o for_o if_o god_n do_v not_o regard_v the_o difference_n of_o man_n action_n but_o be_v equal_o kind_a to_o they_o whether_o they_o do_v good_a or_o evil_n such_o a_o providence_n will_v have_v as_o little_a influence_n on_o man_n life_n as_o if_o there_o be_v none_o at_o all_o we_o must_v then_o suppose_v if_o we_o will_v uphold_v religion_n and_o morality_n in_o the_o world_n not_o only_o that_o there_o be_v a_o providence_n but_o that_o god_n have_v a_o different_a regard_n to_o man_n according_a to_o the_o good_a or_o evil_a of_o their_o action_n the_o regard_n he_o have_v to_o man_n for_o be_v good_a and_o do_v good_a be_v call_v his_o love_n his_o kindness_n his_o goodwill_n his_o grace_n and_o favour_n that_o which_o he_o have_v to_o thing_n that_o be_v evil_a be_v call_v his_o hatred_n that_o which_o he_o have_v to_o person_n for_o do_v evil_a be_v his_o anger_n wrath_n displeasure_n indignation_n according_a to_o the_o different_a nature_n and_o circumstance_n of_o their_o evil_a action_n but_o in_o order_n to_o the_o prevent_v any_o false_a or_o mean_a apprehension_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n when_o the_o passion_n of_o mankind_n be_v attribute_v to_o it_o we_o must_v consider_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o that_o we_o must_v by_o no_o mean_n attribute_v to_o god_n any_o thing_n that_o be_v unreasonable_a in_o ourselves_o such_o be_v all_o irregular_a motion_n which_o we_o call_v violent_a passion_n arise_v from_o surprise_n mistake_v inadvertency_n weakness_n or_o corrupt_a inclination_n but_o set_v all_o these_o aside_o the_o original_a passion_n of_o mankind_n which_o be_v agreeable_a to_o reason_n be_v no_o other_o than_o what_o arise_v from_o a_o inclination_n to_o what_o we_o judge_v to_o be_v good_a and_o a_o aversion_n from_o what_o we_o apprehend_v to_o be_v evil_a which_o hold_v as_o to_o the_o divine_a nature_n 2._o that_o there_o be_v a_o observable_a difference_n in_o the_o very_a nature_n of_o some_o passion_n which_o imply_v a_o repugnancy_n in_o themselves_o to_o the_o divine_a perfection_n which_o other_o do_v not_o for_o love_n and_o kindness_n and_o joy_n and_o inward_a satisfaction_n have_v nothing_o in_o they_o suppose_v their_o object_n good_a but_o what_o agree_v with_o the_o divine_a nature_n but_o the_o passion_n contrary_a to_o these_o as_o envy_n ill-will_a and_o revenge_n be_v not_o only_o repugnant_a as_o passion_n but_o in_o their_o own_o nature_n for_o god_n can_v envy_v the_o good_a of_o his_o creature_n nor_o bear_v ill-will_n to_o they_o as_o such_o nor_o take_v pleasure_n in_o their_o torment_n and_o of_o this_o nature_n anger_n proper_o take_v be_v as_o it_o do_v imply_v a_o present_a disorder_n and_o disturbance_n within_o from_o the_o apprehension_n of_o some_o injury_n do_v or_o intend_v with_o a_o desire_n of_o revenge_n on_o those_o who_o do_v it_o all_o which_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o necessary_a perfection_n of_o god_n for_o they_o argue_v meanness_n imperfection_n and_o mutability_n we_o must_v therefore_o fix_v on_o such_o a_o notion_n of_o anger_n as_o become_v the_o almighty_a wisdom_n and_o goodness_n and_o that_o lie_v in_o 1._o a_o displeasure_n against_o the_o sinner_n on_o the_o account_n of_o his_o sin_n for_o god_n can_v have_v any_o complacency_n in_o those_o who_o displease_v he_o as_o all_o sinner_n do_v whether_o they_o design_v it_o or_o not_o 2._o a_o will_v to_o punish_v sinner_n according_a to_o their_o demerit_n which_o be_v according_o to_o the_o rule_n of_o wisdom_n and_o righteous_a government_n can_v be_v say_v to_o argue_v a_o indecent_a passion_n 3._o the_o actual_a execution_n of_o his_o justice_n upon_o great_a provocation_n and_o so_o god_n be_v say_v to_o be_v angry_a when_o he_o punish_v especial_o when_o he_o do_v it_o sudden_o and_o severe_o as_o man_n in_o their_o passion_n be_v wont_a to_o do_v but_o whatever_o god_n do_v in_o this_o kind_n he_o do_v it_o with_o the_o wisdom_n and_o temper_n of_o a_o judge_n and_o not_o with_o the_o fury_n or_o passion_n of_o a_o his_o people_n and_o his_o turn_n away_o from_o his_o fierce_a anger_n and_o many_o such_o expression_n but_o so_o we_o read_v of_o the_o fire_n of_o his_o indignation_n the_o sword_n of_o his_o wrath_n the_o stretch_v forth_o of_o his_o hand_n which_o all_o grant_n be_v not_o to_o be_v literal_o understand_v if_o then_o in_o these_o expression_n the_o perfection_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n be_v to_o be_v our_o rule_n according_a to_o which_o we_o must_v interpret_v they_o because_o the_o literal_a sense_n imply_v a_o incongruity_n
to_o the_o divine_a perfection_n which_o be_v all_o whole_o spiritual_a then_o from_o the_o same_o reason_n we_o must_v remove_v all_o perturbation_n from_o it_o which_o be_v as_o inconsistent_a with_o the_o absolute_a perfection_n of_o it_o as_o eye_n and_o ear_n and_o hand_n and_o foot_n be_v although_o they_o be_v all_o mention_v in_o scripture_n from_o whence_o we_o just_o infer_v that_o there_o be_v a_o wonderful_a condescension_n to_o the_o ordinary_a capacity_n and_o common_a apprehension_n of_o mankind_n in_o the_o language_n of_o scripture_n concern_v the_o divine_a nature_n which_o make_v deep_a impression_n on_o mean_a understanding_n and_o those_o who_o be_v of_o fine_a thought_n will_v see_v cause_n to_o attribute_v only_o such_o a_o sense_n of_o thing_n relate_v to_o god_n as_o be_v consistent_a with_o his_o infinite_a and_o divine_a perfection_n but_o what_o now_o shall_v we_o say_v to_o this_o tenderness_n and_o compassion_n of_o god_n towards_o penitent_a sinner_n can_v he_o be_v move_v by_o our_o trouble_n and_o sorrow_n and_o act_n of_o contrition_n for_o our_o sin_n if_o we_o be_v righteous_a what_o do_v it_o profit_v the_o almighty_a and_o if_o we_o be_v evil_a how_o can_v it_o hurt_v he_o and_o if_o when_o we_o have_v sin_v we_o repent_v we_o do_v no_o more_o than_o be_v fit_v for_o we_o but_o why_o shall_v we_o imagine_v the_o great_a and_o wise_a god_n shall_v have_v compassion_n upon_o we_o when_o we_o become_v sensible_a of_o our_o own_o folly_n for_o when_o we_o sin_n against_o god_n wilful_o deliberate_o know_o habitual_o we_o do_v what_o lie_v in_o we_o to_o provoke_v he_o to_o wrath_n and_o indignation_n against_o we_o we_o reject_v his_o wise_a government_n we_o slight_a his_o righteous_a law_n we_o prefer_v the_o please_a our_o corrupt_a inclination_n and_o sensual_a lust_n before_o our_o heavenly_a father_n and_o what_o can_v be_v more_o provoke_v to_o he_o than_o to_o be_v so_o despise_v by_o one_o who_o have_v his_o be_v and_o all_o the_o comfort_n of_o life_n from_o he_o suppose_v now_o such_o a_o disobedient_a rebellious_a son_n as_o here_o in_o the_o parable_n be_v make_v sensible_a of_o his_o folly_n be_v his_o father_n bind_v to_o receive_v he_o be_v it_o not_o his_o own_o choice_n to_o go_v from_o he_o if_o he_o have_v suffer_v by_o his_o folly_n he_o may_v thank_v himself_o for_o it_o and_o if_o his_o father_n let_v he_o alone_o in_o it_o he_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o complain_v but_o such_o be_v the_o tenderness_n of_o the_o father_n towards_o his_o repent_a son_n that_o he_o show_v the_o great_a compassion_n imaginable_a for_o he_o do_v not_o stay_v at_o home_n expect_v his_o son_n be_v solemn_a submission_n before_o his_o family_n but_o he_o run_v towards_o he_o and_o fall_v upon_o his_o neck_n and_o kiss_v he_o what_o conception_n now_o ought_v we_o to_o have_v of_o god_n compassion_n towards_o penitent_a sinner_n answerable_a to_o all_o this_o this_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o clear_v in_o these_o particular_n 1._o that_o god_n hatred_n be_v not_o primary_o against_o person_n who_o be_v his_o creature_n but_o against_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a which_o be_v none_o of_o his_o make_n and_o against_o person_n only_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v corrupt_v with_o evil._n thou_o love_v righteousness_n 7._o and_o hate_v wickedness_n faith_n the_o psalmist_n god_n hate_v nothing_o for_o its_o own_o sake_n but_o sin_n and_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o that_o he_o hate_v all_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n 5._o 2._o there_o may_v be_v goodwill_n towards_o the_o person_n of_o a_o sinner_n at_o the_o same_o time_n when_o god_n discover_v the_o hatred_n of_o his_o sin_n i_o do_v not_o say_v god_n take_v any_o pleasure_n in_o he_o while_o he_o go_v on_o in_o sin_n for_o that_o be_v against_o the_o eternal_a rule_n of_o righteousness_n in_o god_n but_o that_o he_o may_v have_v so_o much_o goodwill_n towards_o he_o as_o to_o design_n to_o reduce_v he_o to_o be_v our_o saviour_n and_o all_o the_o promise_n and_o invitation_n which_o be_v make_v to_o sinner_n in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n 3._o it_o be_v very_o agreeable_a to_o infinite_a wisdom_n and_o goodness_n for_o god_n to_o show_v himself_o full_a of_o pity_n and_o compassion_n towards_o penitent_a sinner_n i._n e._n so_o as_o to_o forgive_v they_o their_o former_a sin_n and_o to_o receive_v they_o into_o his_o favour_n for_o pity_n and_o compassion_n in_o god_n be_v to_o be_v judge_v not_o according_a to_o the_o inward_a motion_n we_o find_v in_o ourselves_o but_o according_a to_o these_o two_o thing_n 1._o a_o readiness_n to_o do_v good_a to_o his_o creature_n according_a to_o their_o necessity_n which_o be_v in_o general_n be_v his_o bounty_n and_o goodness_n but_o consider_v with_o respect_n to_o the_o person_n of_o sinner_n it_o be_v his_o clemency_n or_o readiness_n to_o forgive_v and_o with_o respect_n to_o the_o punishment_n they_o deserve_v by_o their_o sin_n it_o be_v his_o mercy_n and_o pity_n which_o in_o we_o be_v aegritudo_fw-la ex_fw-la miseriâ—_n alterius_fw-la and_o therefore_o call_v misericordia_fw-la because_o the_o heart_n be_v touch_v with_o the_o sense_n of_o another_o misery_n but_o we_o be_v not_o so_o to_o apprehend_v it_o in_o god_n but_o that_o such_o be_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n towards_o repent_v sinner_n that_o he_o be_v as_o willing_a to_o show_v mercy_n as_o they_o be_v to_o repent_v 2._o god_n pity_n and_o compassion_n lie_v in_o the_o proper_a effect_n of_o it_o which_o here_o in_o the_o case_n of_o conscience_n begin_v to_o rouse_v itself_o and_o to_o awaken_v the_o sinner_n to_o some_o sense_n of_o his_o folly_n then_o he_o be_v ready_a to_o hearken_v with_o pleasure_n to_o any_o raileries_n against_o religion_n and_o morality_n and_o admire_v the_o wit_n of_o any_o one_o who_o dare_v say_v a_o bold_a and_o sharp_a thing_n against_o the_o wisdom_n of_o all_o age_n and_o of_o the_o best_a man_n in_o they_o and_o one_o or_o two_o such_o say_n without_o proof_n be_v cry_v up_o as_o far_o beyond_o the_o best_a rule_n of_o morality_n or_o the_o evidence_n of_o natural_a and_o reveal_v religion_n any_o sceptical_a dispute_n be_v sufficient_a demonstration_n to_o they_o and_o the_o most_o unreasonable_a cavil_n against_o religion_n be_v embrace_v because_o against_o the_o thing_n they_o hate_v and_o even_o a_o jest_n against_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n shall_v signify_v more_o with_o they_o than_o the_o strong_a argument_n in_o the_o world_n to_o prove_v it_o the_o true_a reason_n be_v they_o love_v their_o vice_n and_o hate_v every_o thing_n which_o make_v they_o uneasy_a to_o they_o and_o nothing_o do_v more_o so_o than_o the_o thought_n of_o a_o judgement_n to_o come_v but_o suppose_v after_o all_o the_o terrible_a and_o frequent_a expression_n of_o scripture_n concern_v the_o day_n of_o judgement_n join_v with_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o the_o thing_n do_v make_v such_o impression_n on_o their_o mind_n that_o they_o can_v whole_o shake_v off_o the_o fear_n and_o apprehension_n of_o it_o than_o their_o last_o endeavour_n be_v to_o mitigate_v and_o lessen_v they_o from_o a_o general_n presumption_n of_o god_n merciful_a nature_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v willing_a to_o suppose_v that_o however_o god_n to_o keep_v the_o world_n in_o awe_n have_v threaten_v they_o with_o the_o dreadful_a severity_n of_o the_o great_a day_n yet_o as_o a_o tender_a father_n who_o threaten_v his_o disobedient_a son_n in_o order_n to_o reclaim_v he_o with_o no_o less_o than_o disinherit_n he_o for_o ever_o yet_o when_o it_o come_v to_o execution_n he_o may_v relent_v not_o from_o his_o son_n desert_n but_o his_o own_o compassion_n so_o they_o hope_v or_o believe_v or_o be_v willing_a to_o do_v so_o that_o god_n at_o the_o great_a day_n will_v not_o proceed_v according_a to_o the_o rigour_n which_o he_o have_v threaten_v to_o use_v and_o to_o comfort_v load_n of_o flesh_n and_o the_o inclination_n which_o be_v natural_a to_o it_o than_o it_o have_v be_v more_o reasonable_a to_o have_v call_v we_o to_o a_o strict_a account_n for_o every_o action_n of_o our_o life_n for_o then_o every_o inclination_n to_o evil_n must_v have_v come_v from_o our_o mind_n but_o now_o our_o body_n corrupt_a and_o draw_v they_o aside_o and_o the_o inclination_n to_o evil_n grow_v fast_o than_o our_o reason_n which_o shall_v check_v and_o restrain_v they_o and_o when_o those_o inclination_n be_v strong_a man_n have_v not_o that_o judgement_n which_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o government_n of_o unruly_a passion_n so_o that_o the_o very_a frame_n of_o humane_a nature_n seem_v to_o plead_v for_o sin_n commit_v in_o the_o heat_n and_o violence_n of_o youth_n beside_o such_o be_v the_o strictness_n and_o purity_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o so_o great_a the_o weakness_n and_o disability_n the_o ignorance_n and_o inadvertency_n of_o mankind_n that_o if_o god_n will_v make_v no_o allowance_n for_o humane_a frailty_n who_o can_v stand_v before_o his_o tribunal_n and_o if_o any_o allowance_n be_v make_v for_o sin_n of_o infirmity_n there_o be_v so_o many_o abatement_n to_o be_v make_v for_o sin_n commit_v through_o sudden_a passion_n through_o mistake_n through_o the_o unavoidable_a impotency_n of_o humane_a nature_n in_o this_o degenerate_a condition_n that_o the_o severity_n of_o that_o day_n be_v not_o much_o to_o be_v fear_v this_o be_v the_o utmost_a of_o the_o sinner_n plea_n against_o the_o severity_n of_o the_o day_n therefore_o none_o shall_v have_v cause_n to_o complain_v of_o the_o harshness_n or_o severity_n of_o his_o proceed_n for_o this_o righteousness_n be_v not_o the_o rigour_n of_o justice_n but_o that_o equity_n which_o have_v a_o regard_n to_o the_o circumstance_n of_o action_n and_o the_o abatement_n and_o extenuation_n of_o fault_n which_o arise_v from_o they_o 2._o none_o shall_v suffer_v at_o of_o these_o word_n as_o ever_o the_o jew_n be_v to_o who_o our_o saviour_n speak_v they_o but_o that_o i_o may_v the_o better_a apply_v they_o to_o the_o conscience_n of_o all_o those_o who_o hear_v i_o this_o day_n and_o to_o make_v my_o discourse_n more_o useful_a and_o practical_a i_o shall_v single_a out_o some_o of_o the_o most_o remarkable_a instance_n of_o those_o duty_n which_o christ_n and_o make_v no_o breach_n or_o difference_n between_o they_o but_o if_o it_o be_v intend_v for_o a_o affront_n although_o it_o be_v never_o so_o little_a than_o the_o brisk_a man_n spirit_n be_v and_o the_o high_a opinion_n they_o have_v of_o themselves_o so_o much_o deep_a impression_n be_v present_o make_v in_o the_o mind_n and_o that_o inflame_v the_o heart_n and_o put_v the_o blood_n and_o spirit_n into_o a_o quick_a motion_n in_o order_n to_o the_o return_v the_o affront_n on_o he_o that_o give_v it_o but_o there_o be_v a_o considerable_a difference_n in_o man_n temper_n to_o be_v observe_v some_o be_v very_o quick_a and_o hasty_a other_o be_v slow_a in_o the_o beginning_n but_o more_o violent_a afterward_o the_o passion_n of_o the_o former_a be_v like_o a_o flash_n of_o gunpowder_n which_o begin_v sudden_o make_v a_o great_a noise_n and_o be_v soon_o over_o but_o the_o other_o be_v like_o a_o burn_a fever_n which_o be_v low_o at_o first_o but_z rises_z by_o degree_n till_o the_o whole_a body_n be_v in_o a_o flame_n the_o one_o be_v more_o troublesome_a but_o the_o other_o more_o dangerous_a the_o care_n of_o the_o one_o must_v be_v in_o the_o beginning_n of_o the_o other_o in_o the_o continuance_n of_o passion_n lest_o it_o turn_v into_o hatred_n malice_n and_o revenge_n but_o what_o through_o the_o natural_a heat_n of_o temper_n in_o some_o the_o jealousy_n and_o suspicion_n in_o other_o the_o cross_v each_o other_o design_n and_o inclination_n the_o misconstruction_n of_o word_n and_o action_n the_o carelessness_n of_o some_o and_o the_o frowardness_n and_o peevishness_n of_o other_o mankind_n be_v apt_a to_o lead_v very_o uneasy_a life_n with_o respect_n to_o one_o another_o and_o must_v do_v so_o unless_o they_o look_v after_o the_o government_n of_o themselves_o as_o to_o real_a or_o imaginary_a provocation_n there_o be_v two_o thing_n i_o shall_v therefore_o speak_v to_o 1._o that_o it_o be_v reasonable_a that_o a_o restraint_n lay_v on_o man_n violent_a passion_n and_o that_o on_o a_o twofold_a account_n 1._o with_o respect_n to_o the_o common_a tranquillity_n of_o humane_a life_n 2._o to_o the_o particular_a tranquillity_n right_n and_o to_o establish_v a_o just_a measure_n of_o proceed_v in_o case_n of_o wrong_n for_o every_o man_n revenge_a his_n own_o injury_n according_a to_o his_o own_o judgement_n be_v one_o of_o those_o great_a inconvenience_n which_o be_v to_o be_v remedy_v by_o society_n law_n and_o government_n and_o mankind_n enter_v into_o society_n for_o this_o end_n do_v suppose_v it_o possible_a for_o they_o to_o keep_v under_o their_o violent_a passion_n and_o to_o submit_v their_o private_a injury_n to_o the_o equal_a arbitration_n of_o law_n or_o else_o they_o be_v make_v to_o no_o purpose_n unless_o it_o be_v to_o punish_v man_n for_o what_o they_o can_v avoid_v for_o many_o of_o those_o crime_n which_o all_o the_o law_n of_o mankind_n do_v punish_v as_o wilful_a murder_n may_v be_v commit_v through_o the_o force_n of_o a_o violent_a passion_n and_o if_o that_o be_v irresistible_a than_o the_o law_n which_o punish_v it_o be_v not_o found_v on_o reason_n and_o justice_n but_o if_o such_o law_n be_v very_o just_a and_o reasonable_a as_o no_o doubt_n they_o be_v than_o all_o mankind_n be_v agree_v that_o man_n violent_a passion_n may_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v restrain_v in_o some_o case_n the_o only_a dispute_n then_o remain_v be_v whether_o it_o may_v not_o be_v as_o fit_v to_o restrain_v our_o passion_n in_o such_o case_n which_o the_o law_n take_v no_o notice_n of_o for_o there_o be_v a_o superior_a law_n viz._n that_o of_o reason_n whereby_o we_o be_v to_o be_v govern_v and_o the_o public_a law_n do_v not_o forbid_v or_o punish_v offence_n because_o they_o be_v passion_n within_o the_o compass_n of_o law_n why_o not_o within_o the_o conduct_n of_o reason_n especial_o when_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o disorder_n may_v happen_v and_o disturbance_n of_o the_o peace_n and_o quiet_a of_o human_a society_n by_o the_o violence_n of_o passion_n which_o may_v be_v out_o of_o the_o reach_n of_o human_a law_n and_o every_o man_n be_v bind_v by_o virtue_n of_o his_o be_v in_o society_n to_o preserve_v the_o tranquillity_n of_o it_o as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v 2._o the_o tranquillity_n of_o our_o own_o mind_n depend_v upon_o it_o and_o certain_o that_o be_v a_o very_a reasonable_a motive_n for_o the_o

attend_v to_o his_o scope_n and_o design_n in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o forego_n chapter_n and_o the_o beginning_n of_o this_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o even_o in_o this_o life_n the_o result_n of_o a_o carnal_a mind_n be_v a_o sort_n of_o a_o spiritual_a death_n and_o of_o a_o spiritual_a mind_n be_v life_n and_o peace_n for_o when_o st._n paul_n in_o the_o 7â—h_o chapter_n have_v represent_v himself_o as_o carnal_a and_o sell_v under_o sin_n although_o there_o be_v 14_o great_a struggle_n between_o the_o conviction_n of_o his_o conscience_n and_o the_o strength_n of_o carnal_a inclination_n yet_o as_o long_o as_o the_o latter_a prevail_v so_o that_o he_o can_v not_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o his_o mind_n and_o reason_n tell_v he_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v but_o do_v those_o thing_n which_o he_o be_v convince_v be_v ought_v not_o to_o have_v do_v the_o more_o he_o reflect_v 20._o upon_o himself_o the_o more_o sad_a and_o miserable_a he_o find_v his_o condition_n to_o be_v as_o appear_v by_o that_o emphatical_a expression_n which_o follow_v upon_o it_o o_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o 24._o from_o the_o body_n of_o this_o death_n but_o say_v in_o the_o forego_n word_n they_o that_o be_v after_o the_o flesh_n do_v mind_n the_o 5._o thing_n of_o the_o flesh_n but_o they_o that_o be_v after_o the_o spirit_n the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n where_o the_o flesh_n in_o a_o moral_a sense_n take_v in_o all_o our_o sensual_a inclination_n which_o be_v sinful_a either_o in_o their_o nature_n or_o degree_n the_o spirit_n be_v that_o divine_a principle_n which_o possess_v the_o mind_n with_o the_o love_n and_o esteem_v of_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o keep_v our_o natural_a inclination_n within_o the_o compass_n of_o god_n law_n to_o be_v carnal_o mind_v be_v to_o be_v under_o the_o influence_n of_o carnal_a thing_n so_o as_o to_o make_v the_o pursuit_n of_o they_o our_o chief_a design_n to_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v be_v to_o have_v so_o deep_a and_o just_a a_o sense_n of_o god_n and_o his_o law_n upon_o our_o mind_n as_o to_o make_v it_o our_o business_n to_o please_v he_o and_o therefore_o to_o subdue_v all_o such_o inclination_n which_o be_v repugnant_a to_o his_o will._n but_o here_o lie_v the_o main_a difficulty_n how_o to_o judge_v concern_v this_o matter_n so_o as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o determine_v the_o vanity_n and_o pleasure_n of_o it_o for_o these_o whole_o take_v up_o their_o heart_n and_o time_n and_o they_o have_v a_o savour_n and_o relish_v for_o any_o thing_n that_o tend_v to_o their_o greatness_n or_o honour_n or_o entertainment_n of_o their_o appetite_n or_o fancy_n here_o buâ—_n if_o we_o speak_v to_o they_o of_o another_o world_n of_o god_n and_o heaven_n and_o a_o spiritual_a disposition_n of_o soul_n either_o they_o look_v on_o we_o with_o amazement_n as_o if_o they_o be_v insensible_a of_o such_o thing_n or_o else_o with_o scorn_n and_o contempt_n as_o if_o we_o go_v about_o to_o deceive_v they_o alas_o they_o be_v too_o wise_a to_o be_v impose_v upon_o by_o we_o and_o they_o have_v other_o thing_n to_o mind_n i_o be_o sure_a not_o great_a or_o weighty_a which_o take_v up_o all_o their_o time_n and_o so_o what_o through_o the_o business_n and_o the_o impertinency_n of_o this_o world_n their_o time_n pass_v away_o as_o a_o table_n that_o be_v tell_v and_o as_o though_o it_o be_v a_o pleasant_a tale_n they_o be_v trouble_v only_o to_o think_v it_o will_v be_v so_o soon_o at_o a_o end_n but_o these_o be_v not_o the_o person_n who_o require_v any_o such_o care_n to_o pass_v a_o right_a judgement_n upon_o they_o for_o they_o can_v pretend_v to_o nothing_o that_o be_v spiritual_a as_o to_o the_o temper_n and_o disposition_n of_o their_o mind_n and_o expression_n a_o more_o spiritual_a sense_n of_o it_o for_o although_o it_o be_v a_o great_a absurdity_n in_o they_o to_o suppose_v that_o a_o mere_a body_n can_v be_v after_o the_o manner_n of_o a_o spirit_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o so_o to_o suppose_v a_o carnal_a mind_n to_o have_v a_o mixture_n of_o some_o spiritual_a quality_n and_o disposition_n in_o it_o and_o this_o make_v the_o difference_n so_o much_o hard_a to_o be_v perceive_v between_o the_o carnal_o and_o spiritual_o mind_v since_o there_o be_v the_o same_o faculty_n of_o perception_n reason_v and_o application_n in_o both_o and_o call_v river_n of_o live_a water_n 38._o i_o confess_v it_o be_v hard_o to_o determine_v what_o a_o habit_n or_o principle_n abide_v in_o our_o mind_n be_v yet_o the_o scripture_n do_v evident_o suppose_v such_o a_o thing_n when_o it_o speak_v of_o the_o new_a birth_n and_o the_o new_a 6._o life_n and_o the_o new_a creature_n and_o the_o 13._o child_n of_o god_n all_o which_o be_v very_o insignificant_a term_n if_o there_o be_v not_o under_o they_o something_o answerable_a to_o the_o first_o principle_n of_o life_n and_o if_o there_o 10._o be_v not_o a_o divine_a spirit_n dwell_v and_o act_v in_o the_o soul_n of_o good_a man_n and_o raise_v they_o up_o above_o carnal_a and_o sensual_a object_n to_o thing_n divine_a and_o spiritual_a and_o carry_v they_o through_o the_o passage_n of_o this_o world_n so_o as_o to_o prepare_v they_o for_o a_o better_a but_o yet_o there_o may_v be_v many_o thing_n which_o carry_v some_o resemblance_n to_o this_o principle_n within_o which_o come_v not_o up_o to_o it_o there_o may_v be_v such_o principle_n of_o education_n and_o good_a manner_n such_o awakening_n of_o conscience_n such_o a_o strength_n of_o natural_a reason_n and_o common_a ingenuity_n as_o may_v carry_v one_o on_o to_o do_v some_o very_a good_a thing_n and_o yet_o he_o may_v fall_v short_a of_o have_v a_o true_a principle_n of_o spiritual_a life_n in_o he_o but_o then_o there_o must_v be_v another_o principle_n within_o which_o contradict_v this_o and_o prevail_v over_o it_o and_o carry_v he_o on_o to_o the_o love_n of_o sin_n which_o prove_v too_o strong_a for_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o due_a regard_n to_o spiritual_a thing_n the_o result_n of_o this_o discourse_n be_v since_o the_o carnal_a mind_n be_v not_o to_o be_v take_v mere_o for_o such_o a_o one_o which_o stand_v out_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o gospel_n nor_o for_o such_o a_o one_o which_o be_v insensible_a of_o spiritual_a thing_n but_o such_o as_o may_v consist_v with_o a_o common_a profession_n of_o religion_n and_o have_v the_o same_o conviction_n and_o good_a impression_n which_o other_o have_v it_o do_v require_v a_o more_o than_o ordinary_a acquaintance_n with_o ourselves_o to_o be_v able_a to_o judge_v aright_o whether_o the_o temper_n of_o our_o mind_n be_v carnal_a or_o spiritual_a 2._o but_o this_o be_v not_o all_o for_o since_o there_o be_v so_o great_a a_o mixture_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a in_o the_o better_a sort_n of_o mankind_n there_o be_v require_v not_o bare_o knowledge_n of_o ourselves_o but_o a_o good_a judgement_n too_o to_o adjust_a the_o proportion_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a in_o particular_a person_n so_o as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o judge_v whether_o we_o be_v carnal_o or_o spiritual_o mind_v for_o as_o those_o who_o be_v carnal_a while_o they_o follow_v their_o carnal_a inclination_n may_v have_v many_o inward_a struggle_n by_o spiritual_a conviction_n so_o those_o who_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v may_v meet_v with_o many_o combat_n from_o the_o flesh_n which_o may_v be_v troublesome_a where_o it_o can_v prevail_v but_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o the_o spirit_n struggle_v against_o the_o flesh_n in_o the_o carnal_o mind_v and_o the_o flesh_n struggle_v against_o the_o spirit_n in_o those_o who_o be_v spiritual_o mind_v for_o where_o there_o be_v no_o perfect_a victory_n there_o will_v be_v some_o opposition_n and_o the_o best_a have_v so_o many_o fail_n to_o complain_v of_o in_o this_o world_n so_o many_o infirmity_n and_o defect_n in_o their_o good_a action_n so_o many_o passion_n not_o bring_v into_o their_o due_a order_n so_o many_o omission_n of_o personal_n and_o relative_n duty_n such_o variety_n of_o temper_n and_o weakness_n of_o resolution_n such_o coldness_n in_o devotion_n and_o unreasonable_a dejection_n of_o mind_n so_o many_o unaccountable_a fear_n and_o such_o dreadful_a apprehension_n of_o death_n and_o the_o consequence_n of_o it_o that_o these_o thing_n must_v make_v great_a abatement_n as_o to_o such_o as_o be_v true_o spiritual_o mind_v but_o by_o all_o these_o thing_n the_o
reason_n to_o quarrel_v with_o christianity_n than_o any_o other_o religion_n if_o their_o quarrel_n be_v not_o real_o against_o all_o as_o i_o fear_v it_o be_v let_v they_o look_v abroad_o over_o the_o unchristian_a world_n and_o they_o will_v find_v such_o foolish_a notion_n such_o vain_a superstition_n such_o incoherent_a fable_n such_o immoral_a practice_n allow_v by_o their_o several_a principle_n which_o i_o go_v upon_o be_v these_o i._o that_o the_o great_a end_n of_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o world_n viz._n the_o salvation_n of_o mankind_n be_v most_o agreeable_a to_o the_o infinite_a wisdom_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n no_o one_o who_o believe_v a_o god_n can_v deny_v he_o to_o be_v of_o infinite_a wisdom_n and_o goodness_n for_o the_o very_a same_o reason_n which_o pleasure_n and_o satisfaction_n both_o in_o this_o world_n and_o another_o but_o our_o soul_n be_v of_o a_o immortal_a nature_n that_o will_v subsist_v in_o happiness_n or_o misery_n after_o this_o life_n otherwise_o the_o reward_n and_o punishment_n of_o another_o world_n signify_v nothing_o the_o question_n than_o be_v if_o it_o can_v be_v make_v a_o question_n whether_o it_o be_v more_o agreeable_a to_o the_o infinite_a goodness_n and_o wisdom_n of_o god_n to_o provide_v for_o the_o wellbeing_a of_o mankind_n in_o such_o a_o low_a and_o gloomy_a region_n as_o this_o earth_n be_v or_o to_o advance_v they_o into_o a_o far_o better_a place_n and_o better_a company_n and_o more_o noble_a and_o divine_a delight_n and_o those_o not_o depend_v on_o a_o fade_a droop_a die_a life_n but_o on_o the_o perpetual_a enjoyment_n of_o a_o complete_a happiness_n both_o of_o soul_n and_o body_n no_o one_o that_o ever_o dare_v to_o think_v or_o consider_v of_o these_o thing_n can_v believe_v there_o be_v any_o comparison_n between_o they_o so_o that_o the_o salvation_n tender_v by_o the_o gospel_n be_v the_o most_o agreeable_a end_n which_o the_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n can_v carry_v on_o for_o the_o benefit_n of_o mankind_n but_o why_o shall_v mankind_n flatter_v themselves_o with_o the_o hope_n or_o expectation_n of_o a_o happiness_n so_o far_o above_o what_o they_o
