christ_n death_n as_o to_o the_o first_o it_o suppose_v that_o the_o affliction_n and_o punishment_n of_o god_n people_n be_v all_o for_o satisfaction_n which_o if_o it_o be_v so_o they_o be_v of_o all_o man_n moâ—â—_n miseraâ—â—â—_n a_o their_o affliction_n do_v ordinary_o more_o abound_v than_o the_o affliction_n of_o other_o it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o impenitent_a and_o irreconcile_a sinner_n have_v no_o reason_n to_o look_v upon_o any_o affliction_n otherwise_o than_o as_o a_o arrest_n of_o divine_a vengeance_n upon_o every_o ague_n every_o fever_n as_o god_n take_v he_o by_o the_o throat_n and_o say_v to_o he_o pay_v i_o now_o what_o thou_o owe_v because_o they_o can_v apprehend_v any_o such_o thing_n as_o that_o christ_n have_v for_o they_o satisfy_v divine_a justice_n enough_o with_o it_o the_o papist_n indeed_o fancy_v that_o christ_n have_v only_o satisfy_v for_o the_o eternal_a punishment_n but_o still_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o satisfy_v by_o temporal_a punishment_n hence_o be_v their_o penance_n and_o purgatory_n found_v but_o that_o be_v a_o very_a uncomfortable_a notion_n and_o the_o more_o we_o look_v into_o it_o the_o more_o dreadful_a it_o will_v appear_v on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o antinomian_o be_v as_o much_o almost_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n deny_v the_o affliction_n of_o god_n people_n to_o be_v punishment_n of_o sin_n or_o judgement_n when_o the_o scripture_n so_o call_v they_o the_o truth_n lie_v in_o the_o middle_n betwixt_o these_o two_o extreme_n they_o be_v judgement_n they_o be_v punishment_n of_o sin_n but_o they_o be_v no_o legal_a demand_n of_o satisfaction_n nor_o give_v satisfaction_n christ_n have_v satisfy_v for_o the_o whole_a guilt_n of_o their_o sin_n for_o who_o he_o die_v all_o of_o that_o nature_n as_o to_o they_o be_v finish_v upon_o the_o cross_n so_o that_o the_o affliction_n of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n their_o punishment_n for_o sin_n have_v now_o both_o another_o name_n and_o notion_n than_o satisfaction_n 2._o a_o second_o mistake_n upon_o which_o this_o objection_n be_v found_v be_v that_o christ_n by_o his_o death_n pay_v a_o price_n into_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o that_o it_o be_v such_o a_o creature_n as_o by_o his_o rebellion_n have_v reproach_v the_o sovereignty_n of_o his_o maker_n but_o this_o be_v but_o one_o good_a which_o god_n obtain_v by_o those_o punishment_n 2._o again_o god_n by_o the_o punishment_n of_o sinner_n though_o he_o obtain_v not_o their_o amendment_n and_o reformation_n obtain_v yet_o another_o more_o universal_a good_a and_o that_o two_o way_n 1._o in_o the_o reformation_n and_o prevent_v at_o least_o the_o wickedness_n of_o other_o 2._o in_o the_o uphold_v of_o the_o government_n and_o discipline_n of_o the_o world_n more_o proclaim_v to_o the_o world_n and_o more_o conspicuous_a unto_o we_o but_o this_o will_n in_o part_n fall_v in_o under_o the_o second_o head_n for_o i_o tell_v you_o that_o god_n be_v glorify_v by_o this_o method_n of_o his_o providence_n not_o only_o as_o his_o glorious_a attribute_n divers_a of_o they_o be_v by_o it_o more_o exalt_v but_o also_o as_o the_o pious_a and_o religious_a act_n of_o his_o people_n be_v more_o by_o this_o method_n of_o providence_n elicit_v i_o have_v often_o hint_v to_o you_o that_o god_n have_v a_o twofold_a glory_n from_o his_o creature_n and_o the_o work_n of_o his_o hand_n the_o first_o be_v a_o mere_a passive_a glory_n thus_o the_o heaven_n declare_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n the_o heaven_n show_v forth_o the_o greatness_n glory_n and_o power_n of_o god_n the_o second_o be_v active_a wherein_o the_o creature_n do_v some_o action_n from_o which_o a_o glory_n do_v result_v unto_o god_n now_o by_o this_o method_n of_o providence_n god_n be_v startle_v and_o deject_v we_o a_o unthought-of_a good_a most_o elevate_v and_o affect_v we_o good_a thing_n lessen_v in_o our_o opinion_n and_o estimate_n by_o a_o long_a expectation_n they_o be_v great_a and_o most_o affect_v we_o when_o we_o be_v past_a hope_n of_o they_o sudden_a and_o unlooked_a for_o good_a raise_v our_o heart_n to_o great_a admiration_n great_a praise_n and_o thanksgiving_n now_o he_o that_o offer_v praise_n say_v god_n glorifi_v i_o the_o more_o god_n be_v admire_v the_o more_o his_o goodness_n be_v predicate_v and_o proclaim_v the_o more_o man_n upon_o any_o occasion_n speak_v of_o his_o honour_n and_o power_n and_o greatness_n the_o more_o glory_n god_n have_v from_o they_o three_o god_n be_v more_o honour_a by_o this_o method_n of_o providence_n not_o only_o as_o the_o suddenness_n of_o it_o do_v more_o affect_v and_o elevate_v his_o people_n
to_o heaven_n ordinary_o with_o break_a bone_n and_o a_o bleed_a heart_n so_o that_o you_o see_v that_o god_n get_v himself_o glory_n from_o his_o people_n sin_n give_v no_o man_n a_o ground_n of_o presumption_n to_o go_v on_o in_o a_o course_n of_o sin_n against_o god_n use_v 4._o in_o the_o last_o place_n let_v this_o observation_n mind_v we_o in_o this_o case_n to_o be_v worker_n together_o with_o god_n have_v we_o sin_v and_o come_v short_a of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n let_v we_o do_v our_o endeavour_n to_o make_v our_o sin_n to_o turn_v to_o the_o furtherance_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n let_v we_o endeavour_n to_o make_v the_o best_a of_o our_o own_o bad_a market_n what_o be_v do_v we_o can_v recall_n let_v we_o endeavour_v if_o possible_a to_o make_v a_o advantage_n of_o our_o former_a miscarriage_n you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v that_o be_v answ_n 1._o let_v the_o sense_n of_o your_o sin_n hasten_v your_o pace_n to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n god_n have_v a_o great_a state_n change_v your_o heart_n let_v not_o that_o dunghill_n be_v lose_v look_v upon_o it_o often_o to_o help_v to_o raise_v up_o your_o heart_n in_o the_o praise_n and_o admiration_n of_o god_n freegrace_n and_o the_o engage_v your_o heart_n more_o for_o god_n in_o your_o contrary_a duty_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v but_o so_o â—uch_o shall_v serve_v for_o this_o observation_n also_o good_a thing_n of_o this_o life_n do_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n move_v circular_o though_o most_o to_o the_o seem_a advantage_n of_o ungodly_a man_n in_o my_o enlargment_n upon_o this_o notion_n i_o shall_v keep_v much_o to_o the_o same_o method_n which_o i_o observe_v in_o the_o former_a 1._o open_v it_o unto_o you_o 2._o justify_v the_o observation_n by_o instance_n 3._o show_v you_o the_o providence_n as_o to_o its_o distribution_n of_o the_o portion_n of_o this_o life_n the_o pagan_a philosopher_n distribute_v all_o the_o good_a thing_n they_o have_v any_o knowledge_n of_o into_o three_o sort_n the_o good_a thing_n of_o the_o body_n among_o which_o they_o reckon_v long-life_n health_n strength_n beauty_n etc._n etc._n the_o good_a thing_n of_o the_o mind_n the_o rich_a endowment_n of_o it_o such_o as_o knowledge_n invention_n judgement_n wit_n memory_n and_o moral_a virtue_n etc._n etc._n and_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o fortune_n such_o as_o birth_n ingenuous_a education_n honour_n riches_n all_o these_o have_v a_o goodness_n in_o they_o which_o lie_v in_o their_o suitableness_n to_o the_o use_n of_o humane_a life_n or_o society_n the_o blind_a heathen_a not_o see_v the_o fountainhead_n of_o these_o beautiful_a stream_n ascribe_v they_o to_o fortune_n but_o they_o be_v all_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o providence_n that_o give_v to_o one_o a_o long_o to_o another_o a_o short_a life_n to_o one_o great_a to_o another_o lesser_a measure_n of_o health_n and_o strength_n etc._n etc._n to_o one_o more_o judgement_n wit_n etc._n etc._n than_o to_o another_o but_o i_o chief_o understand_v my_o observation_n of_o the_o good_a thing_n which_o the_o heathen_a call_v bona_fw-la fortunae_fw-la the_o good_a thing_n of_o fortune_n such_o as_o honour_n riches_n etc._n etc._n these_o also_o be_v the_o lord_n he_o it_o be_v say_v moses_n that_o give_v we_o power_n to_o get_v wealth_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n by_o another_o penman_n tell_v we_o that_o promotion_n come_v neither_o from_o the_o east_n nor_o from_o the_o west_n but_o god_n pull_v down_o one_o and_o set_v up_o another_o promotion_n do_v most_o depend_v upon_o the_o favour_n of_o the_o great_a man_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o you_o shall_v observe_v the_o scripture_n everywhere_o make_v god_n the_o author_n of_o the_o favour_n and_o grace_n which_o person_n have_v find_v in_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o prince_n of_o the_o world_n 2._o now_o i_o observe_v in_o the_o first_o place_n that_o the_o wheel_n of_o providence_n in_o make_v this_o distribution_n do_v for_o the_o most_o part_n move_v circular_o my_o meaning_n be_v that_o good_a and_o evil_n of_o this_o nature_n have_v as_o all_o humane_a thing_n its_o turn_n and_o vicissitude_n sometime_o to_o good_a man_n sometime_o to_o bad_a man_n the_o heathen_a have_v some_o prospect_n of_o this_o though_o what_o we_o call_v providence_n they_o ascribe_v to_o fortune_n to_o who_o they_o give_v a_o wheel_n to_o signify_v the_o rotation_n of_o all_o these_o sublunary_a contentment_n in_o which_o you_o know_v the_o same_o spoke_n be_v not_o always_o up_o nor_o down_o but_o sometime_o these_o spoke_n be_v uppermost_a by_o and_o by_o they_o be_v at_o the_o ground_n and_o those_o that_o but_o now_o be_v below_o be_v up_o in_o their_o place_n and_o this_o be_v most_o perspicuous_a in_o body_n of_o people_n which_o be_v make_v up_o of_o those_o two_o sort_n of_o man_n that_o divide_v the_o world_n godly_a
of_o it_o i_o think_v be_v that_o to_o david_n which_o we_o have_v psal_n 89._o from_o the_o 20_o to_o the_o 35._o v._o verse_n 28._o he_o tell_v he_o that_o he_o will_v keep_v his_o mercy_n with_o he_o for_o evermore_o and_o his_o covenant_n shall_v stand_v fast_o with_o he_o but_o yet_o he_o reserve_v himself_o a_o liberty_n to_o punish_v he_o and_o his_o seed_n for_o sin_n vers_fw-la 30._o of_o his_o people_n and_o the_o faith_n and_o patience_n of_o his_o people_n show_v in_o and_o under_o their_o suffering_n with_o the_o great_a glory_n thus_o the_o apostle_n say_v 2_o cor._n 4.17_o that_o our_o light_n and_o momentany_a affliction_n work_v for_o we_o a_o far_o more_o exceed_a and_o eternal_a weight_n of_o glory_n and_o thus_o much_o may_v serve_v to_o have_v clear_v this_o objection_n that_o i_o may_v hasten_v to_o the_o practical_a application_n of_o this_o observation_n this_o motion_n of_o divine_a providence_n in_o punish_v with_o temporal_a punishment_n past_a and_o pardon_v sin_n even_o in_o the_o best_a of_o god_n people_n appear_v exceed_o reasonable_a 1._o in_o regard_n of_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n the_o justice_n of_o god_n have_v take_v a_o satisfaction_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o his_o son_n and_o be_v pay_v a_o price_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n will_v not_o allow_v he_o to_o punish_v they_o with_o a_o eternal_a punishment_n yet_o it_o be_v reasonable_a they_o shall_v not_o go_v altogether_o unpunished_a that_o the_o world_n may_v see_v that_o he_o be_v a_o god_n of_o pure_a eye_n than_o to_o behold_v iniquity_n in_o
