obedience_n when_o the_o law_n do_v allow_v we_o to_o make_v resistance_n in_o defence_n of_o our_o religion_n our_o liberty_n and_o life_n item_n for_o insufficiency_n not_o be_v able_a to_o pray_v for_o use_v the_o lord_n prayer_n as_o a_o charm_n such_o be_v the_o article_n by_o which_o a_o great_a part_n of_o that_o clergy_n be_v destroy_v of_o who_o the_o world_n be_v not_o worthy_a with_o such_o our_o gentleman_n be_v still_o in_o travel_n but_o i_o hope_v his_o labour_n will_v be_v in_o vain_a read_v some_o of_o those_o sermon_n and_o treatise_n which_o of_o late_a year_n have_v be_v publish_v by_o such_o as_o you_o call_v young_a coxcomb_n consider_v the_o strain_n of_o piety_n and_o moderation_n of_o reason_n and_o judgement_n of_o industry_n and_o acquire_v knowledge_n and_o i_o be_o confident_a you_o will_v find_v so_o little_a hope_n to_o be_v believe_v by_o other_o that_o you_o will_v see_v reason_n enough_o not_o to_o believe_v yourself_o let_v he_o talk_v of_o the_o persecution_n of_o julian_n and_o other_o pagan_n this_o which_o our_o author_n promote_v exceed_v they_o all_o other_o do_v but_o occidere_fw-la episcopos_fw-la this_o man_n seek_v occidere_fw-la episcopatum_fw-la and_o under_o a_o pretence_n of_o plead_v and_o pray_v for_o they_o he_o contrive_v how_o to_o prey_v upon_o they_o what_o else_o mean_v that_o insinuation_n which_o he_o quote_v he_o that_o design_n contrive_v or_o consent_v to_o spoil_v the_o church_n of_o any_o of_o her_o endowment_n may_v a_o secret_a curse_n waste_v his_o substance_n let_v his_o child_n be_v vagabond_n and_o beg_v their_o bread_n in_o desolate_a place_n but_o when_o i_o call_v to_o mind_n mr._n humphries_n project_n for_o increase_v the_o number_n of_o our_o bishop_n who_o he_o will_v have_v to_o be_v choose_v by_o the_o several_a faction_n presbyterian_a independent_a etc._n etc._n and_o these_o whether_o layman_n or_o clergyman_n to_o preside_v over_o those_o party_n it_o remember_v i_o of_o a_o passage_n of_o mr._n hunt_n p._n 90._o of_o his_o postscript_n where_o he_o demand_v thus_o will_v it_o be_v any_o prejudice_n that_o the_o number_n of_o her_o bishop_n be_v increase_v and_o that_o suffragans_fw-la be_v appoint_v and_o approve_v by_o the_o present_a bishop_n etc._n etc._n so_o that_o when_o other_o trade_n fail_v mr._n hunt_v as_o well_o as_o mr._n humphries_n may_v have_v some_o hope_n of_o be_v make_v suffragans_fw-la at_o least_o for_o the_o order_n of_o episcopacy_n may_v be_v lay_v by_o as_o he_o intimate_v and_o then_o some_o lay-superintendents_a may_v succeed_v and_o enjoy_v their_o honour_n and_o revenue_n therefore_o to_o his_o curse_n i_o shall_v add_v my_o prayer_n for_o a_o blessing_n on_o levi_n deut._n 33.11_o bless_v lord_n his_o substance_n and_o accept_v the_o work_n of_o his_o hand_n smite_v through_o the_o loin_n of_o they_o that_o rise_v up_o against_o he_o and_o of_o they_o that_o hate_v he_o that_o they_o rise_v not_o again_o the_o second_o head_n contain_v a_o justification_n of_o the_o late_a unnatural_a war_n p._n 6._o it_o be_v difficult_a he_o say_v to_o tell_v how_o that_o late_a unhappy_a war_n begin_v or_o how_o it_o come_v to_o issue_v so_o tragical_o in_o the_o death_n of_o the_o late_a king_n and_o be_v to_o speak_v in_o so_o difficult_a a_o case_n he_o enter_v his_o caution_n p._n 50._o i_o will_v not_o be_v perverse_o understand_v by_o any_o man_n as_o if_o i_o go_v about_o to_o justify_v our_o late_a war_n but_o it_o will_v appear_v to_o be_v protestatio_fw-la contra_fw-la factum_fw-la p._n 102._o he_o say_v that_o war_n will_v have_v be_v impossible_a if_o the_o churchman_n have_v not_o maintain_v the_o doctrine_n that_o monarchy_n be_v jure_fw-la divino_fw-la in_o such_o a_o sense_n that_o make_v the_o king_n absolute_a this_o be_v a_o fiction_n of_o mr._n baxter_n and_o through_o the_o loin_n of_o the_o clergy_n they_o strike_v at_o the_o king_n as_o if_o that_o glorious_a prince_n intend_v tyranny_n but_o that_o good_a prince_n be_v far_o from_o any_o design_n of_o rule_v by_o a_o arbitrarie_a power_n he_o have_v no_o army_n nor_o money_n to_o raise_v one_o but_o by_o the_o contrivance_n of_o some_o man_n his_o father_n be_v engage_v in_o a_o expensive_a war_n for_o the_o recovery_n of_o the_o palatinate_n which_o exhaust_v all_o the_o exchequer_n and_o reduce_v the_o royal_a family_n to_o great_a necessity_n and_o then_o they_o fail_v in_o their_o promise_a supply_n and_o leave_v he_o to_o a_o precarious_a way_n of_o subsist_v and_o to_o stretch_v his_o prerogative_n for_o the_o preservation_n of_o himself_o and_o family_n he_o will_v have_v part_v with_o the_o half_a of_o his_o power_n and_o prerogative_n as_o he_o often_o offer_v to_o have_v preserve_v or_o restore_v peace_n to_o his_o subject_n but_o when_o he_o speak_v to_o they_o of_o peace_n they_o make_v themselves_o ready_a for_o battle_n but_o be_v there_o not_o some_o other_o doctrine_n preach_v in_o those_o day_n which_o contribute_v more_o to_o the_o begin_n of_o that_o war_n than_o that_o of_o the_o divinity_n of_o king_n what_o think_v you_o of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o lawfulness_n of_o resistance_n then_o preach_v and_o print_v under_o the_o same_o argument_n as_o now_o it_o be_v by_o mr._n marshal_n burton_n etc._n etc._n what_o think_v you_o of_o that_o doctrine_n which_o according_a to_o the_o jesuit_n teach_v that_o the_o rise_n and_o original_a of_o government_n be_v in_o the_o people_n and_o that_o as_o they_o give_v so_o they_o may_v recall_v it_o as_o they_o see_v cause_n you_o know_v who_o lay_v down_o the_o same_o principle_n in_o a_o certain_a preface_n that_o government_n be_v the_o perfect_a creature_n of_o man_n in_o society_n make_v by_o pact_n and_o consent_n and_o not_o othorwise_o most_o certain_o not_o otherwise_o and_o therefore_o most_o certain_o ordainable_a by_o the_o whole_a community_n for_o the_o safety_n and_o preservation_n of_o the_o whole_a p._n 38._o of_o preface_n to_o what_o tend_v this_o other_o doctrine_n that_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o king_n be_v in_o the_o two_o house_n when_o they_o have_v fright_v away_o his_o person_n that_o the_o king_n be_v singulis_n major_a but_o universis_fw-la minor_fw-la that_o episcopacy_n be_v a_o antichristian_a order_n and_o to_o be_v stube_v up_o root_n and_o branch_n that_o the_o king_n court_n and_o bishop_n be_v design_v to_o bring_v in_o popery_n that_o our_o liturgy_n be_v but_o the_o mass-book_n translate_v these_o doctrine_n with_o such_o remonstrance_n vote_n and_o ordinance_n begin_v that_o unhappy_a war_n the_o association_n make_v in_o city_n and_o country_n seizing_z the_o fort_n and_o magazine_n and_o royal_a navy_n and_o answer_v all_o his_o message_n of_o peace_n with_o reproach_n of_o his_o male-administrations_a this_o be_v that_o which_o you_o call_v the_o english_a loyalty_n when_o they_o send_v out_o army_n to_o fight_v he_o when_o they_o have_v he_o prisoner_n and_o vote_v no_o more_o address_n they_o be_v if_o you_o will_v believe_v they_o or_o mr._n hunt_n his_o majesty_n most_o humble_a and_o loyal_a subject_n still_o such_o as_o these_o i_o can_v as_o easy_o prove_v to_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o those_o time_n as_o that_o they_o be_v the_o opinion_n and_o practice_n of_o too_o many_o in_o these_o our_o day_n though_o most_o absurd_a and_o dangerous_a as_o they_o be_v now_o publish_v by_o too_o many_o beside_o our_o two_o author_n p._n 20._o pref._n there_o be_v little_a reason_n to_o charge_v the_o guilt_n of_o the_o unexpiable_a murder_n of_o our_o late_a excellent_a king_n upon_o presbytery_n which_o be_v not_o think_v of_o here_o in_o england_n till_o the_o war_n be_v begin_v and_o p._n 21._o sure_o this_o gentleman_n have_v read_v very_o little_a or_o dissemble_v very_o much_o mr._n cambden_n in_o the_o life_n of_o queen_n elizabeth_n be_v full_a of_o the_o project_n and_o practice_n of_o such_o as_o plant_v the_o geneva-discipline_n here_o in_o england_n what_o trouble_v they_o occasion_v to_o the_o government_n both_o in_o church_n and_o state_n and_o what_o deserve_a punishment_n some_o of_o they_o receive_v as_o penry_n and_o vdal_n
dogmatical_o to_o the_o people_n commit_v to_o his_o charge_n we_o shall_v find_v he_o teach_v and_o exhort_v a_o different_a doctrine_n and_o practice_n from_o what_o be_v here_o deliver_v by_o he_o of_o which_o i_o shall_v speak_v at_o large_a hereafter_o and_o only_o note_v by_o the_o way_n that_o the_o oration_n be_v make_v long_o after_o julian_n death_n which_o savour_v not_o very_o much_o of_o humanity_n and_o if_o it_o be_v upon_o occasion_n of_o some_o disappointment_n as_o be_v report_v it_o have_v as_o little_a of_o christianity_n and_o this_o will_v appear_v a_o truth_n that_o he_o do_v exceed_v as_o well_o in_o the_o praise_n of_o constantius_n the_o first_o arian_n emperiour_a as_o in_o the_o dispraise_n of_o julian_n and_o the_o misrepresentation_n of_o the_o christian_n in_o his_o time_n all_o which_o circumstance_n consider_v and_o no_o other_o proof_n produce_v our_o author_n deserve_v to_o do_v public_a penance_n for_o abuse_v the_o father_n and_o primitive_a christian_n and_o as_o he_o say_v the_o whole_a christian_a world_n and_o yet_o what_o can_v gregory_n blame_v in_o constantius_n but_o that_o which_o he_o call_v his_o ignorance_n or_o mistake_n not_o be_v aware_a of_o his_o apostasy_n and_o it_o be_v too_o unchristian_a to_o blame_v the_o emperor_n not_o only_o for_o make_v he_o a_o king_n but_o keep_v he_o alive_a this_o you_o say_v p._n 24._o be_v enough_o to_o show_v that_o constantius_n will_v never_o have_v make_v julian_n caesar_n if_o he_o have_v know_v he_o to_o have_v be_v such_o and_o in_o my_o judgement_n here_o be_v as_o much_o say_v to_o prove_v that_o constantius_n ought_v to_o have_v slay_v he_o when_o his_o brother_n gallus_n be_v slay_v although_o this_o be_v a_o thing_n which_o he_o repent_v of_o in_o his_o deathbed_n and_o will_v undoubted_o be_v more_o unworthy_a of_o a_o christian_a emperor_n to_o exclude_v he_o out_o of_o the_o life_n than_o to_o leave_v he_o to_o a_o succession_n that_o descend_v by_o inheritance_n to_o he_o and_o if_o it_o be_v such_o a_o bill_n of_o exclusion_n that_o you_o contend_v for_o i_o be_o sure_a none_o of_o the_o father_n nor_o any_o good_a christian_n will_v ever_o consent_v to_o it_o p._n 24._o be_v a_o exclamation_n against_o the_o emperor_n have_v first_o say_v that_o constantius_n do_v far_o excel_v all_o other_o king_n in_o wisdom_n and_o understanding_n p._n 25._o and_o that_o he_o be_v lead_v by_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n into_o every_o counsel_n and_o enterprise_n what_o in_o turn_v arian_n and_o persecute_v athanasius_n and_o other_o orthodox_n bishop_n and_o put_v arian_n in_o their_o seat_n your_o wisdom_n be_v admire_v above_o your_o power_n and_o again_o your_o power_n more_o than_o your_o wisdom_n but_o your_o piety_n be_v value_v above_o they_o both_o then_o he_o come_v to_o blame_v the_o emperor_n as_o the_o only_a ignorant_a and_o inconsiderate_a person_n and_o which_o of_o the_o devil_n steal_v in_o along_o with_o you_o at_o that_o consult_v and_o yet_o again_o p._n 26._o he_o say_v of_o this_o first_o arian_n emperor_n that_o he_o will_v have_v part_v not_o only_o with_o his_o empire_n and_o all_o that_o he_o have_v in_o this_o world_n even_o his_o life_n itself_o for_o the_o security_n and_o safety_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n etc._n etc._n and_o our_o author_n say_v that_o at_o his_o death_n he_o show_v with_o much_o earnestness_n the_o concernment_n he_o have_v for_o the_o true_a religion_n p._n 28_o 29._o but_o for_o aught_o i_o yet_o see_v julian_n apostasy_n be_v not_o yet_o know_v but_o he_o be_v general_o account_v both_o a_o pious_a and_o a_o stout_a man_n and_o therefore_o his_o repent_v of_o make_v julian_n caesar_n be_v not_o on_o the_o account_n of_o religion_n but_o for_o some_o other_o respect_n julian_n have_v be_v declare_v augustus_n by_o his_o soldier_n who_o often_o dispose_v of_o the_o empire_n and_o be_v then_o on_o his_o march_n to_o dispute_v the_o title_n with_o constantius_n for_o hitherto_o julian_n keep_v to_o the_o christian_a assembly_n and_o be_v not_o know_v to_o be_v a_o pagan_a as_o you_o show_v from_o ammianus_n marcellinus_n p._n 28._o after_o that_o julian_n be_v declare_v emperor_n he_o still_o feign_a himself_o a_o christian_n and_o though_o in_o private_a he_o perform_v his_o heathenish_a rite_n trust_v some_o few_o with_o the_o secret_a yet_o he_o public_o go_v to_o church_n on_o twelfthday_n and_o after_o he_o have_v be_v devout_a at_o the_o service_n he_o come_v away_o again_o this_o be_v do_v at_o vienna_n not_o quite_o ten_o month_n before_o the_o emperor_n death_n this_o be_v all_o that_o our_o author_n produce_v for_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o father_n and_o primitive_a christian_n for_o the_o exclusion_n of_o julian_n his_o title_n be_v divine_a his_o religion_n at_o most_o only_o suspect_v not_o know_v yet_o say_v our_o author_n p._n 30._o if_o this_o doctrine_n concern_v the_o alteration_n of_o succession_n shall_v displease_v any_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o what_o these_o father_n which_o will_v not_o amount_v to_o one_o single_a person_n assert_v with_o so_o much_o vehemency_n he_o think_v it_o reasonable_a that_o first_o they_o confute_v this_o doctrine_n of_o exclusion_n which_o they_o dislike_v and_o second_o that_o they_o will_v never_o fetch_v their_o mountebank-receipt_n of_o prayer_n and_o tear_n and_o suchlike_a encouragement_n to_o arbitrarie_a government_n out_o of_o the_o write_n of_o these_o very_a father_n this_o our_o author_n know_v can_v easy_o be_v do_v and_o therefore_o he_o think_v to_o prejudice_v his_o reader_n against_o it_o by_o call_v they_o mountebank-receipt_n and_o antimonarchical_a author_n and_o encouragement_n to_o arbitrarie_a government_n than_o which_o i_o scarce_o know_v any_o thing_n more_o profane_a but_o the_o downright_a blasphemy_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o best_a christian_n who_o count_v not_o their_o life_n dear_a unto_o they_o that_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n may_v not_o be_v evil_o speak_v of_o as_o if_o christianity_n be_v a_o utter_a enemy_n to_o caesar_n or_o as_o another_o mahomet_n to_o establish_v his_o kingdom_n by_o the_o sword_n what_o a_o easy_a matter_n do_v our_o author_n think_v it_o to_o impose_v any_o falsehood_n on_o the_o vulgar_a when_o he_o tell_v they_o of_o father_n and_o primitive_a christian_n with_o so_o much_o vehemency_n assert_v the_o lawfulness_n of_o exclude_v julian_n and_o instead_o of_o all_o other_o proof_n produce_v only_o a_o rhetorical_a expression_n of_o a_o person_n in_o some_o passion_n from_o which_o it_o may_v be_v prove_v as_o lawful_a to_o murder_n julian_n as_o to_o exclude_v he_o from_o the_o succession_n hercules_n tuam_fw-la fidem_fw-la but_o to_o answer_v our_o author_n demand_n i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o confute_v his_o doctrine_n viz._n that_o the_o father_n and_o primitive_a christian_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n be_v for_o the_o exclusion_n of_o julian_n from_o the_o empire_n iraeneus_n tertullian_n and_o st._n augustin_n you_o have_v see_v to_o be_v of_o a_o contrary_a judgement_n 1._o the_o true_a christian_n can_v not_o be_v for_o it_o upon_o your_o position_n that_o he_o have_v a_o right_a to_o it_o by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n and_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n give_v it_o he_o which_o you_o seem_v to_o assert_v 2._o it_o be_v certain_a the_o arian_n father_n be_v not_o as_o have_v be_v already_o show_v they_o congratulate_v julian_n advent_n to_o the_o kingdom_n much_o less_o can_v the_o orthodox_n be_v for_o it_o upon_o gregory_n surmise_n that_o constantius_n will_v have_v exclude_v he_o out_o of_o the_o life_n as_o well_o as_o the_o empire_n 3._o from_o their_o behaviour_n towards_o constantius_n a_o vehement_a arian_n the_o orthodox_n father_n show_v they_o be_v not_o for_o exclusion_n constans_n his_o brother_n be_v join_v with_o he_o in_o the_o empire_n and_o he_o defend_v athanasius_n and_o the_o orthodox_n bishop_n against_o constantius_n yet_o these_o christian_n never_o side_v with_o constans_n against_o constantius_n they_o never_o resist_v or_o seek_v to_o depose_v or_o exclude_v he_o although_o his_o heresy_n be_v extreme_o dangerous_a and_o propagate_v by_o force_n and_o persecution_n of_o more_o eminent_a divine_n than_o any_o that_o suffer_v under_o julian_n and_o as_o our_o author_n say_v that_o popery_n be_v ten_o time_n worse_o than_o paganism_n so_o i_o have_v hear_v as_o wise_a and_o good_a man_n as_o himself_o say_v that_o socinianism_n be_v as_o bad_a as_o popery_n and_o the_o arian_n who_o deny_v the_o deity_n of_o the_o son_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v much_o like_o our_o socinian_n mr._n baxter_n have_v so_o much_o charity_n as_o to_o think_v that_o some_o that_o die_v in_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v saint_n in_o heaven_n though_o he_o
