and_o yet_o alas_o many_o be_v more_o godless_a more_o ignorant_a more_o profane_a than_o ever_o they_o be_v yea_o wickedness_n grow_v and_o the_o chaff_n increase_v above_o the_o wheat_n be_v sure_a therefore_o that_o god_n will_v bring_v his_o second_o fan_n upon_o we_o because_o we_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o first_o and_o the_o mild_a and_o gentle_a fan_n of_o his_o word_n to_o try_v and_o search_v we_o therefore_o he_o will_v bring_v the_o fearful_a fan_n of_o his_o judgement_n and_o with_o it_o he_o will_v blow_v soul_n &_o body_n into_o hell_n with_o those_o our_o sin_n &_o corruption_n which_o we_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o fan_n of_o god_n word_n to_o blow_v from_o us._n the_o first_o have_v so_o long_o blow_v in_o vain_a that_o the_o second_o must_v needs_o come_v upon_o we_o &_o it_o have_v already_o begin_v to_o blow_v three_o or_o four_o blast_n have_v blow_v over_o we_o famine_n pestilence_n earthquake_n fire_n water_n wind_n these_o have_v so_o blow_v some_o of_o we_o that_o they_o have_v take_v away_o a_o great_a number_n of_o us._n for_o we_o that_o remain_v this_o only_a remain_v that_o we_o week_n strengthen_v ourselves_o by_o grace_n to_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v against_o the_o next_o blast_n for_o come_v it_o will_v &_o when_o it_o come_v no_o wealth_n nor_o worldly_a thing_n can_v enable_v we_o to_o endure_v it_o only_a faith_n &_o repentance_n &_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n will_v stand_v at_o that_o day_n now_o therefore_o in_o that_o so_o fearful_a a_o fan_a abide_v we_o see_v it_o be_v so_o near_o as_o appear_v by_o the_o blast_n already_o past_a over_o we_o which_o be_v nothing_o but_o the_o forerunner_n of_o a_o great_a tempest_n what_o shall_v be_v our_o care_n except_o we_o care_v not_o to_o be_v blow_v body_n &_o soul_n into_o hell_n but_o to_o labour_v to_o efchew_v this_o fearful_a fan_n of_o god_n wrath_n or_o at_o least_o if_o it_o come_v upon_o we_o that_o it_o may_v not_o blow_v we_o to_o hell_n but_o hasten_v we_o to_o heaven_n it_o thy_o heart_n be_v touch_v to_o ask_v how_o this_o may_v be_v i_o answer_v thou_o only_o to_o follow_v the_o prophet_n advice_n in_o this_o place_n by_o search_v and_o try_v ourselves_o the_o way_n to_o escape_v god_n trial_n be_v to_o try_v thyself_o and_o to_o escape_v god_n judgement_n to_o be_v a_o judge_n to_o thy_o own_o soul_n and_o so_o the_o way_n to_o escape_v the_o fearful_a fan_n of_o god_n be_v to_o fan_v thy_o own_o heart_n by_o the_o law_n of_o god_n for_o whosoever_o the_o first_o fan_n that_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n do_v work_v upon_o these_o man_n be_v never_o blow_v away_o with_o the_o fan_n of_o god_n judgement_n o_o then_o entertain_v the_o word_n of_o god_n into_o thy_o heart_n submit_v thy_o soul_n unto_o it_o let_v it_o pierce_v &_o try_v and_o ransack_v thy_o heart_n and_o lay_v before_o thou_o thy_o wretched_a estate_n by_o thy_o sin_n and_o when_o thou_o see_v thynakednesse_n and_o misery_n confess_v it_o bewail_v it_o be_v humble_v for_o it_o cry_v &_o call_v for_o mercy_n and_o forgiveness_n pray_v against_o thy_o special_a sin_n strive_v to_o purge_v they_o out_o as_o the_o poison_n of_o thy_o soul_n crave_v than_o other_o do_v pray_v against_o these_o sin_n and_o strive_v against_o they_o above_o all_o and_o endeavour_n that_o by_o the_o fan_n of_o god_n word_n they_o may_v be_v blow_v away_o from_o thou_o when_o thou_o have_v do_v this_o then_o mark_v what_o will_v come_v of_o it_o when_o thou_o have_v fan_v thyself_o god_n will_v not_o fan_v thou_o but_o when_o the_o fan_n of_o his_o judgement_n come_v and_o blow_v so_o strong_o upon_o the_o wicked_a than_o the_o lord_n find_v thou_o already_o fan_v and_o cleanse_v by_o his_o word_n will_v spare_v thou_o and_o his_o judgement_n shall_v either_o blow_v over_o thou_o and_o pass_v by_o thou_o untouched_a as_o over_o lot_n in_o the_o destruction_n of_o sodom_n or_o else_o shall_v fan_v out_o all_o thy_o corruption_n and_o blow_v thou_o up_o to_o heaven_n to_o be_v lay_v up_o as_o pure_a wheat_n in_o the_o heavenly_a garner_n and_o mansion_n of_o glory_n which_o christ_n ascend_v to_o prepare_v for_o thou_o now_o then_o among_o those_o many_o business_n with_o which_o this_o world_n do_v cumber_v every_o one_o of_o we_o all_o which_o shall_v perish_v with_o the_o world_n itself_o let_v we_o good_a brethren_n spare_v some_o time_n for_o this_o great_a business_n martha_n may_v be_v cumber_v about_o many_o thing_n but_o this_o be_v that_o one_o thing_n which_o be_v necessary_a therefore_o whatsoever_o be_v do_v let_v not_o this_o be_v undo_v once_o a_o day_n put_v thyself_o and_o thy_o life_n under_o the_o fan_n of_o god_n law_n try_v thyself_o what_o thou_o be_v and_o thy_o life_n how_o thou_o live_v once_o a_o day_n keep_v a_o court_n in_o thy_o conscience_n call_v thy_o thought_n thy_o word_n and_o thy_o deed_n to_o
he_o therefore_o that_o have_v in_o his_o nature_n the_o seed_n of_o all_o sin_n have_v also_o the_o seed_n of_o it_o and_o again_o see_v all_o evil_n tend_v to_o a_o perfection_n as_o well_o as_o grace_n do_v what_o reason_n therefore_o be_v there_o but_o we_o may_v safe_o think_v that_o the_o devil_n will_v hale_v every_o one_o to_o that_o height_n of_o sin_n if_o it_o be_v not_o that_o the_o powerful_a hand_n of_o god_n prevent_v he_o who_o will_v neither_o suffer_v wicked_a man_n nor_o the_o devil_n himself_o to_o be_v so_o wicked_a as_o they_o can_v and_o will_v be_v the_o use_n of_o this_o second_o rule_n be_v notable_a for_o in_o this_o search_n of_o ourselves_o it_o show_v we_o what_o we_o be_v without_o all_o colour_n or_o deceit_n and_o full_o discover_v unto_o we_o the_o ugliness_n of_o our_o nature_n and_o it_o may_v teach_v we_o all_o how_o 38_o to_o think_v and_o esteem_v of_o ourselves_o when_o we_o hear_v of_o cain_n unnatural_a murder_n pharohs_o unnatural_a cruelty_n the_o sodomite_v unnatural_a lust_n achitophle_n devilish_a policy_n senacherib_n horrible_a blasphemy_n judas_n monstrous_a treason_n julian's_n fearful_a apostasy_n when_o we_o hear_v of_o the_o fearful_a murder_n treason_n periuty_n sin_n against_o nature_n blasphemy_n apostasy_n witchcraft_n and_o other_o the_o horrible_a sin_n of_o the_o world_n let_v we_o then_o return_v into_o ourselves_o &_o look_v homeward_o even_o into_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o confess_v every_o one_o that_o these_o shall_v have_v be_v even_o thy_o sin_n also_o if_o god_n grace_n have_v not_o prevent_v thou_o this_o will_v humble_v thou_o and_o make_v thou_o think_v vile_o &_o base_o of_o thyself_o and_o so_o consequent_o bring_v thou_o to_o repentance_n and_o true_a amendment_n and_o the_o very_a reason_n why_o man_n repent_v not_o nor_o amend_v their_o way_n be_v because_o they_o be_v pharisy_n by_o nature_n and_o think_v high_o of_o themselves_o and_o of_o their_o own_o nature_n and_o their_o natural_a inclination_n this_o will_v be_v a_o harsh_a and_o a_o strange_a doctrine_n to_o they_o oh_o they_o have_v excellent_a nature_n and_o they_o can_v endure_v such_o and_o such_o sin_n and_o they_o thank_v god_n they_o be_v not_o as_o ill_o as_o other_o but_o let_v all_o such_o man_n know_v they_o must_v cease_v magnify_v nature_n and_o learn_v to_o magnify_v god_n grace_n let_v they_o know_v that_o nature_n in_o they_o be_v in_o the_o root_n as_o much_o corrupt_a as_o in_o the_o worst_a man_n in_o the_o world_n and_o every_o man_n heart_n be_v a_o bottomless_a fountain_n of_o all_o sin_n therefore_o praise_v not_o thy_o nature_n but_o god_n grace_n and_o mercy_n in_o give_v thou_o so_o good_a a_o nature_n or_o rather_o so_o well_o restrain_v and_o rectify_v thy_o nature_n and_o stay_v not_o there_o but_o desire_v of_o the_o lord_n that_o as_o he_o have_v give_v thou_o a_o better_a temper_a nature_n they_o to_o other_o man_n so_o also_o he_o will_v bestow_v on_o thou_o his_o special_a and_o save_a grace_n and_o as_o he_o have_v keep_v thou_o from_o the_o fearful_a sin_n of_o other_o thou_o be_v as_o ill_o natural_o as_o they_o so_o he_o will_v also_o lead_v thou_o into_o the_o way_n of_o salvation_n which_o else_o the_o best_a nature_n in_o the_o world_n can_v never_o attain_v unto_o the_o three_o rule_n to_o be_v know_v and_o practise_v by_o he_o who_o will_v true_o search_v himself_o be_v that_o every_o man_n bear_v of_o adam_n be_v by_o nature_n the_o child_n of_o wrath_n and_o god_n enemy_n this_o be_v true_a of_o all_o without_o exception_n high_a or_o low_a rich_a or_o poor_a noble_a or_o simple_a bear_v in_o the_o visible_a church_n or_o without_o and_o further_o by_o be_v enemy_n of_o god_n he_o be_v therefore_o bear_v subject_a to_o hell_n to_o damnation_n and_o to_o all_o other_o curse_n so_o that_o look_v as_o a_o traitor_n convict_v stand_v thereby_o in_o his_o prince_n high_a displeasure_n and_o be_v sure_a of_o death_n without_o special_a pardon_n so_o stand_v every_o man_n when_o he_o be_v bear_v convict_v of_o high_a treason_n against_o god_n in_o his_o high_a disfavour_v and_o be_v in_o danger_n of_o hell_n which_o be_v the_o fulfil_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n thus_o david_n confess_v of_o himself_o i_o be_v bear_v in_o iniquity_n and_o in_o sin_n have_v my_o mother_n concein_v i_o if_o in_o sin_n then_o in_o god_n wrath_n and_o under_o the_o danger_n of_o damnation_n if_o any_o ask_v how_o or_o why_o this_o be_v so_o i_o answer_v the_o truth_n as_o also_o the_o equity_n of_o this_o three_o rule_n depend_v on_o the_o two_o former_a for_o because_o every_o man_n be_v bear_v guilty_a of_o adam_n great_a sin_n and_o also_o taint_v original_o with_o all_o corruption_n &_o a_o pronnesse_n to_o all_o sin_n therefore_o it_o follow_v in_o equity_n and_o justice_n that_o every_o man_n be_v bear_v under_o the_o wrath_n and_o curse_n of_o god_n this_o point_n be_v a_o plain_a and_o evident_a truth_n yet_o man_n in_o the_o world_n think_v not_o so_o and_o it_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o man_n repent_v not_o of_o their_o sin_n for_o most_o man_n think_v that_o by_o nature_n they_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n and_o therefore_o they_o need_v not_o to_o sue_v for_o it_o in_o humiliation_n and_o repentance_n but_o only_o live_v civil_o and_o do_v no_o open_a wrong_n and_o all_o be_v well_o whereas_o alas_o there_o be_v no_o condemn_a traitor_n more_o out_o of_o his_o prince_n favour_n nor_o more_o sure_a of_o death_n without_o a_o pardon_n than_o all_o we_o be_v out_o of_o god_n favour_n and_o sure_a of_o damnation_n unless_o we_o procure_v god_n favour_n again_o by_o faith_n and_o repentance_n for_o the_o better_a open_n of_o this_o three_o rule_n and_o the_o manifest_v of_o the_o truth_n let_v we_o know_v further_o that_o the_o curse_n of_o god_n under_o the_o which_o we_o be_v all_o bear_v be_v threefould_a the_o first_o be_v a_o bondage_n under_o satan_n it_o be_v a_o certain_a truth_n that_o every_o man_n as_o he_o be_v bear_v of_o his_o parent_n and_o till_o he_o repent_v be_v a_o slave_n of_o satan_n man_n or_o woman_n high_a or_o low_o satan_n be_v his_o lord_n and_o master_n he_o sit_v as_o judge_v in_o his_o heart_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n satan_n be_v the_o king_n of_o the_o nation_n and_o god_n of_o the_o world_n man_n will_v in_o word_n defy_v satan_n and_o not_o name_v he_o without_o defiance_n and_o spit_v at_o he_o and_o yet_o alas_o he_o be_v in_o their_o heart_n they_o spit_v he_o out_o of_o their_o mouth_n but_o he_o be_v low_a they_o shall_v also_o spit_v he_o out_o of_o their_o heart_n and_o that_o be_v true_a defiance_n indeed_o for_o alas_o he_o lodge_v in_o thy_o heart_n and_o there_o he_o make_v his_o throne_n and_o reign_v until_o the_o spirit_n of_o regeneration_n dispossess_v he_o and_o till_o then_o no_o servant_n be_v so_o subject_a to_o his_o master_n no_o slave_n to_o his_o lord_n as_o be_v the_o heart_n of_o man_n by_o nature_n unto_o satan_n the_o prince_n of_o darkness_n nay_o our_o bondage_n be_v more_o fearful_a than_o the_o slavery_n of_o any_o poor_a christian_a in_o the_o spaniard_n or_o in_o the_o turk_n galley_n for_o their_o body_n be_v but_o in_o bondage_n and_o at_o command_n and_o under_o punishment_n but_o our_o best_a part_n our_o heart_n our_o conscience_n sin_n therefore_o how_o due_a and_o just_a a_o punishment_n upon_o that_o horrible_a heap_n of_o sinfulness_n which_o be_v in_o every_o man_n nature_n and_o it_o be_v a_o most_o terrible_a curse_n for_o it_o be_v the_o very_a gate_n of_o hell_n and_o the_o downfall_n to_o damnation_n unto_o all_o man_n but_o such_o as_o by_o faith_n and_o repentance_n do_v get_v their_o death_n sanctify_v by_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n unto_o such_o man_n indeed_o it_o be_v no_o curse_n but_o a_o gracious_a and_o glorious_a blessing_n for_o it_o be_v alter_v by_o christ_n his_o death_n but_o unto_o all_o god_n love_n which_o be_v among_o we_o and_o at_o god_n deal_v with_o we_o and_o behold_v we_o be_v a_o most_o beautiful_a church_n a_o glorious_a nation_n a_o nation_n to_o be_v admire_v and_o wonder_v at_o but_o look_v at_o the_o life_n of_o our_o ordinary_a professor_n look_v at_o our_o sin_n and_o at_o our_o requite_v of_o god_n love_n and_o we_o be_v a_o people_n of_o sodom_n as_o full_a of_o iniquity_n as_o they_o be_v who_o sin_n be_v so_o many_o so_o rife_o and_o so_o ripe_a that_o at_o the_o last_o they_o will_v even_o bring_v down_o fire_n &_o brimstone_n or_o some_o other_o strange_a judgement_n upon_o we_o if_o repentance_n do_v not_o prevent_v it_o or_o the_o cry_n and_o prayer_n of_o holy_a man_n stay_v not_o god_n hand_n so_o then_o let_v we_o all_o here_o assemble_v grant_v &_o confess_v that_o we_o be_v a_o nation_n so_o far_o from_o be_v worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v as_o that_o we_o be_v most_o worthy_a to_o be_v hate_v &_o to_o have_v all_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n pour_v upon_o us._n now_o then_o be_v we_o so_o and_o shall_v we_o continue_v so_o still_o nay_o that_o be_v the_o worst_a and_o most_o wretched_a of_o all_o then_o let_v every_o one_o of_o we_o learn_v this_o duty_n enter_v into_o ourselves_o search_v our_o heart_n and_o life_n that_o they_o may_v lie_v open_a to_o our_o own_o sight_n to_o the_o confusion_n of_o we_o in_o ourselves_o that_o in_o god_n by_o repentance_n we_o may_v be_v raise_v up_o our_o sin_n lie_v open_a before_o the_o face_n of_o god_n and_o stink_v in_o his_o presence_n and_o and_o cry_v for_o vengeance_n and_o before_o the_o face_n of_o god_n angel_n who_o bewail_v it_o and_o before_o the_o face_n of_o the_o devil_n who_o rejoice_v in_o our_o confusion_n and_o shall_v they_o lie_v hide_v only_o to_o ourselves_o now_o then_o if_o we_o will_v have_v they_o hide_v from_o god_n and_o stop_v the_o cry_n that_o they_o make_v against_o we_o and_o keep_v they_o from_o satan_n who_o accuse_v we_o for_o they_o we_o must_v so_o search_v ourselves_o that_o they_o may_v lie_v open_a to_o our_o own_o heart_n remember_v thou_o thy_o sin_n and_o god_n will_v forget_v they_o lay_v they_o open_v will_v follow_v but_o that_o they_o will_v all_o be_v disclose_v at_o the_o last_o day_n to_o thy_o eternal_a confusion_n therefore_o again_o and_o again_o i_o exhort_v you_o in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n search_v yourselves_o find_v out_o your_o sin_n confess_v they_o to_o god_n free_o and_o ingenious_o confess_v their_o desert_n to_o be_v hell_n and_o damnation_n humble_a your_o heart_n to_o god_n cry_v and_o call_v for_o pardon_n as_o for_o life_n and_o death_n purpose_n and_o promise_v to_o leave_v they_o begin_v a_o new_a course_n of_o life_n believe_v steadfast_o and_o doubt_v not_o quench_v that_o great_a action_n of_o unkindness_n which_o god_n have_v against_o they_o and_o become_v a_o nation_n as_o worthy_a upon_o their_o faith_n and_o repentance_n in_o christ_n to_o be_v belove_v as_o for_o their_o peace_n and_o prosperity_n they_o have_v be_v of_o all_o nation_n of_o the_o earth_n admire_v hitherto_o of_o the_o three_o general_a point_n 4_o the_o four_o general_a point_n in_o this_o exhortation_n be_v the_o time_n limit_v they_o when_o they_o shall_v search_v before_o the_o decree_n come_v forth_o etc._n etc._n as_o though_o the_o prophet_n shall_v say_v israel_n repent_v before_o god_n execute_v his_o judgement_n on_o thou_o for_o behold_v the_o gracious_a deal_n of_o god_n man_n sin_v his_o sin_n deserve_v plague_n but_o god_n present_o plague_v travel_v and_o bring_v forth_o a_o fearful_a birth_n namely_o the_o universal_a flood_n to_o wash_v away_o and_o take_v revenge_n upon_o the_o universal_a iniquity_n of_o those_o time_n so_o many_o hundred_o year_n he_o give_v unto_o the_o jew_n long_o he_o be_v in_o conceive_v their_o destruction_n and_o oftentimes_o he_o have_v it_o at_o the_o bring_v forth_o as_o in_o the_o captivity_n of_o babylon_n and_o under_o antiochus_n yet_o his_o mercy_n stay_v it_o and_o still_o he_o travail_v long_o tell_v they_o here_o by_o the_o prophet_n that_o yet_o the_o decree_n be_v not_o come_v forth_o
