place_n that_o as_o neither_o man_n for_o himself_o nor_o the_o creature_n that_o be_v inferior_a to_o he_o can_v make_v any_o expiation_n for_o his_o sin_n so_o neither_o can_v the_o creature_n above_o he_o now_o the_o most_o exalt_a creature_n that_o revelation_n have_v acquaint_v we_o with_o and_o we_o know_v nothing_o in_o this_o case_n but_o what_o we_o have_v from_o revelation_n be_v the_o angel_n and_o archangel_n and_o we_o may_v be_v therefore_o satisfy_v that_o those_o glorious_a being_n can_v never_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n because_o it_o appear_v by_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n that_o they_o can_v never_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o their_o own_o sin_n and_o therefore_o as_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o such_o revelation_n that_o some_o of_o they_o have_v sin_v so_o we_o be_v in_o the_o same_o tell_v that_o those_o that_o have_v so_o do_v be_v reserve_v in_o everlasting_a chain_n to_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o great_a day_n now_o our_o natural_a reason_n tell_v we_o that_o no_o creature_n can_v be_v so_o in_o love_n with_o misery_n and_o sure_o everlasting_a chain_n and_o a_o fearful_a expectation_n of_o judgement_n do_v imply_v misery_n for_o the_o devil_n believe_v and_o tremble_v but_o i_o say_v our_o natural_a reason_n tell_v we_o that_o no_o creature_n can_v be_v so_o in_o love_n with_o misery_n as_o not_o to_o free_v itself_o from_o it_o be_v it_o in_o its_o power_n so_o to_o do_v and_o therefore_o the_o same_o natural_a reason_n do_v tell_v we_o that_o the_o true_a reason_n why_o the_o fall_a angel_n do_v not_o do_v so_o be_v because_o they_o can_v do_v so_o and_o if_o they_o can_v expiate_v their_o own_o sin_n we_o may_v be_v pretty_a well_o satisfy_v that_o they_o can_v expiate_v sin_n at_o all_o and_o we_o may_v be_v the_o rather_o so_o satisfy_v because_o we_o be_v as_o sure_a that_o they_o will_v in_o the_o case_n employ_v their_o best_a endeavour_n for_o themselves_o as_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o they_o love_v themselves_o best_o beside_o we_o know_v that_o in_o the_o case_n of_o mankind_n death_n be_v threaten_v as_o the_o penalty_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n and_o we_o may_v be_v pretty_a well_o satisfy_v that_o without_o death_n no_o expiation_n can_v be_v make_v for_o without_o blood_n there_o be_v no_o remission_n but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n we_o have_v some_o reason_n to_o believe_v that_o angel_n be_v not_o liable_a to_o death_n at_o least_o not_o to_o such_o a_o death_n to_o which_o man_n be_v obnoxious_a and_o therefore_o for_o this_o reason_n as_o well_o as_o the_o former_a we_o may_v pretty_a rational_o conclude_v that_o the_o angel_n be_v in_o no_o capacity_n to_o expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n and_o that_o therefore_o they_o can_v do_v it_o one_o thing_n more_o i_o will_v add_v to_o this_o head_n before_o i_o leave_v it_o and_o that_o be_v this_o that_o though_o the_o angel_n be_v very_o glorious_a and_o exalt_a creature_n and_o by_o the_o account_n we_o have_v of_o they_o in_o the_o scripture_n be_v place_v in_o a_o much_o high_a scale_n in_o the_o creation_n than_o man_n and_o so_o be_v far_o above_o he_o yet_o still_o because_o they_o be_v creature_n they_o be_v therefore_o at_o as_o great_a a_o distance_n from_o god_n as_o man_n himself_o be_v for_o their_o distance_n from_o he_o be_v infinite_a and_o there_o be_v we_o know_v no_o degree_n in_o infinity_o now_o because_o the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n be_v to_o be_v make_v to_o god_n and_o to_o god_n alone_o and_o because_o there_o be_v a_o infinite_a distance_n between_o god_n and_o angel_n as_o well_o as_o there_o be_v between_o god_n and_o man_n i_o say_v for_o these_o reason_n we_o can_v no_o more_o think_v the_o interposition_n of_o a_o angel_n effectual_a for_o make_v a_o atonement_n and_o expiation_n for_o sin_n than_o we_o can_v think_v the_o interposition_n of_o a_o man_n to_o be_v so_o and_o if_o we_o shall_v suppose_v a_o sort_n of_o creature_n a_o thousand_o nay_o ten_o thousand_o or_o more_o time_n as_o much_o above_o angel_n as_o angel_n be_v above_o man_n yet_o because_o after_o such_o a_o supposition_n even_o this_o sort_n of_o creature_n be_v as_o much_o below_o god_n as_o man_n be_v and_o because_o the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n if_o attempt_v by_o such_o creature_n be_v to_o be_v make_v to_o god_n therefore_o we_o can_v think_v that_o the_o dignity_n of_o their_o station_n can_v contribute_v any_o thing_n at_o all_o towards_o the_o make_v their_o attempt_v expiation_n effectual_a and_o we_o know_v and_o that_o too_o by_o unquestionable_a proof_n
that_o the_o objection_n suppose_v a_o opposition_n between_o the_o imperfect_a obedience_n of_o believer_n and_o the_o imputation_n of_o their_o saviour_n righteousness_n from_o which_o suppose_a opposition_n it_o infer_v that_o if_o salvation_n be_v bestow_v upon_o they_o in_o consideration_n of_o the_o one_o that_o it_o can_v for_o that_o reason_n be_v bestow_v in_o consideration_n of_o the_o other_o and_o indeed_o such_o a_o supposition_n be_v grant_v the_o inference_n will_v be_v good_a 2._o but_o then_o second_o we_o do_v assert_v and_o maintain_v that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o opposition_n between_o the_o imputation_n and_o the_o imperfect_a obedience_n of_o believer_n as_o that_o salvation_n must_v be_v disjunctive_o bestow_v in_o consideration_n of_o the_o one_o in_o opposition_n to_o and_o exclusive_a of_o the_o other_o for_o though_o we_o allow_v a_o believer_n imperfect_a obedience_n to_o be_v a_o subordinate_a yet_o we_o do_v not_o allow_v it_o to_o be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o man_n salvation_n that_o be_v though_o he_o shall_v have_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o imputation_n in_o consideration_n of_o his_o sincere_a but_o imperfect_a obedience_n yet_o he_o shall_v only_o obtain_v his_o salvation_n in_o consideration_n of_o such_o imputation_n for_o justice_n only_o bestow_v the_o reward_n there_o where_o it_o be_v deserve_v and_o to_o bestow_v it_o elsewhere_o may_v be_v call_v mercy_n or_o may_v be_v call_v favour_n but_o can_v either_o in_o propriety_n of_o speech_n or_o truth_n be_v call_v justice_n since_o therefore_o it_o be_v our_o present_a business_n to_o maintain_v that_o method_n in_o which_o god_n bestow_v not_o only_o pardon_v of_o sin_n but_o over_o and_o above_o a_o eternal_a happiness_n to_o be_v just_a and_o since_o in_o order_n to_o its_o be_v so_o it_o must_v conform_v to_o his_o law_n which_o be_v so_o or_o else_o the_o law_n can_v be_v fulfil_v and_o since_o last_o the_o law_n do_v not_o assign_v its_o reward_n to_o a_o imperfect_a obedience_n for_o it_o require_v a_o perfect_a not_o a_o imperfect_a obedience_n and_o its_o reward_n can_v and_o do_v only_o belong_v to_o what_o it_o require_v not_o to_o what_o it_o do_v not_o require_v since_o i_o say_v the_o case_n stand_v thus_o it_o be_v obvious_a to_o observe_v first_o that_o because_o the_o reward_n be_v only_o bestow_v upon_o the_o saviour_n that_o be_v upon_o a_o perfect_a obedience_n to_o which_o alone_o by_o the_o law_n it_o do_v belong_v that_o therefore_o the_o execution_n of_o the_o law_n in_o the_o distribution_n of_o its_o reward_n be_v just_a and_o second_o that_o because_o as_o we_o have_v already_o prove_v such_o his_o perfect_a obedience_n be_v just_o impute_v to_o believer_n in_o consideration_n of_o their_o sincere_a though_o imperfect_a obedience_n that_o therefore_o as_o by_o his_o obedience_n alone_o they_o be_v entitle_v to_o the_o reward_n so_o according_a to_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o gospel_n by_o their_o own_o obedience_n they_o be_v entitle_v to_o his._n when_o therefore_o believer_n come_v to_o be_v judge_v in_o another_o world_n according_a to_o what_o they_o have_v do_v in_o this_o the_o enquiry_n shall_v not_o be_v whether_o by_o their_o life_n lead_v in_o this_o world_n they_o have_v deserve_v a_o eternal_a happiness_n in_o that_o for_o that_o need_v no_o enquiry_n because_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a in_o itself_o and_o confess_v on_o all_o side_n that_o they_o have_v not_o but_o their_o trial_n shall_v be_v whether_o their_o obedience_n in_o this_o life_n though_o imperfect_a and_o therefore_o in_o itself_o undeserving_a of_o eternal_a happiness_n be_v such_o as_o may_v so_o far_o entitle_v they_o to_o their_o saviour_n purchase_n as_o that_o his_o obedience_n may_v be_v impute_v to_o they_o in_o order_n to_o their_o obtain_v such_o purchase_n i_o have_v therefore_o pursue_v this_o thing_n the_o far_o because_o the_o socinian_o do_v as_o much_o as_o in_o they_o lie_v vilify_v the_o imputation_n of_o our_o saviour_n righteousness_n for_o by_o that_o mean_v they_o gain_v great_a advantage_n to_o run_v down_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o expiation_n and_o yet_o too_o many_o of_o our_o own_o people_n do_v here_o close_o with_o they_o and_o do_v not_o to_o i_o seem_v to_o discern_v the_o mischievous_a consequence_n that_o will_v fall_v upon_o the_o whole_a doctrine_n of_o redemption_n if_o once_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n be_v exclude_v from_o be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o man_n salvation_n for_o as_o to_o myself_o i_o be_o at_o present_a very_o well_o satisfy_v that_o if_o the_o law_n have_v never_o be_v fulfil_v by_o obedience_n the_o breach_n of_o it_o have_v never_o be_v expiate_v by_o any_o punishment_n inflict_v for_o such_o breach_n whatsoever_o for_o god_n design_n in_o promulge_v his_o law_n be_v that_o it_o shall_v be_v obey_v for_o most_o certain_a it_o be_v that_o it_o can_v be_v indifferent_a to_o he_o whether_o we_o obey_v what_o the_o law_n command_v or_o suffer_v what_o it_o threaten_v no_o his_o design_n be_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v holy_a and_o safe_a such_o a_o design_n flow_v from_o his_o nature_n and_o be_v a_o effect_n of_o his_o essential_a bounty_n and_o goodness_n and_o therefore_o come_v from_o he_o free_o without_o the_o invitation_n or_o solicitation_n of_o any_o thing_n beside_o his_o own_o propension_n or_o inclination_n but_o judgement_n that_o be_v punishment_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o his_o law_n be_v his_o strange_a work_n that_o be_v it_o do_v not_o come_v from_o he_o as_o his_o goodness_n and_o bounty_n do_v free_o and_o spontaneous_o but_o be_v extort_a from_o he_o by_o the_o interposition_n and_o provocation_n of_o sin_n to_o accomplish_v therefore_o the_o principal_a and_o more_o natural_a design_n of_o his_o law_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o his_o law_n shall_v be_v obey_v for_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n of_o fulfil_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o he_o who_o tell_v we_o that_o not_o one_o jot_n or_o tittle_n of_o it_o shall_v fail_v tell_v we_o likewise_o that_o he_o come_v to_o fulfil_v it_o fulfil_v it_o not_o only_o as_o the_o mankind_n break_v it_o and_o have_v he_o not_o fulfil_v it_o by_o obey_v it_o the_o vengeance_n of_o it_o have_v always_o continue_v for_o it_o must_v have_v continue_v so_o long_o as_o it_o be_v just_o due_a and_o it_o must_v be_v just_o due_a so_o long_o as_o the_o law_n remain_v break_v and_o not_o obey_v we_o owe_v our_o reward_n therefore_o to_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n as_o we_o do_v our_o redemption_n to_o his_o death_n nay_o which_o be_v more_o and_o more_o direct_a to_o our_o text_n because_o the_o law_n must_v of_o necessity_n be_v obey_v and_o because_o he_o alone_o do_v obey_v it_o therefore_o for_o that_o reason_n as_o well_o as_o for_o several_a other_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o i_o will_v desire_v they_o who_o it_o chief_o concern_v the_o next_o thing_n propose_v will_v be_v to_o see_v what_o the_o scripture_n say_v to_o it_o in_o order_n to_o which_o take_v we_o notice_n in_o the_o 1._o first_o place_n that_o our_o saviour_n at_o his_o incarnation_n do_v take_v upon_o he_o the_o same_o flesh_n and_o blood_n with_o we_o men._n for_o because_o he_o the_o man_n christ_n jesus_n and_o we_o do_v both_o of_o we_o derive_v from_o one_o and_o the_o same_o single_a and_o common_a stock_n adam_n and_o because_o we_o be_v several_a propagation_n and_o branch_n from_o that_o one_o stock_n therefore_o we_o may_v be_v true_o reckon_v because_o in_o reality_n so_o we_o be_v the_o several_a and_o distinct_a parcel_n of_o that_o common_a flesh_n and_o blood_n out_o of_o which_o all_o mankind_n be_v make_v but_o though_o the_o son_n of_o god_n become_v man_n in_o order_n to_o be_v the_o saviour_n of_o man_n and_o though_o he_o be_v make_v of_o the_o same_o blood_n with_o all_o man_n in_o order_n to_o his_o become_a man_n yet_o because_o we_o know_v that_o the_o distinct_a parcel_n of_o this_o common_a flesh_n and_o blood_n have_v and_o that_o just_o too_o very_o different_a and_o sometime_o contrary_a the_o philistine_n the_o tyrian_n the_o sidonian_n the_o egyptian_n the_o assyrian_n for_o their_o cruelty_n to_o the_o jew_n see_v ezek._n chap._n 25_o 26_o 27_o 28_o 29_o 30_o 31_o 32._o and_o afterward_o the_o roman_n for_o they_o all_o which_o nation_n and_o perhaps_o some_o other_o the_o roman_n except_v be_v sum_v up_o under_o the_o name_n of_o gog_n and_o magog_n in_o the_o thirty_o eight_o and_o thirty_o nine_o chapter_n so_o the_o destruction_n of_o those_o who_o be_v seduce_v under_o the_o second_o resurrection_n may_v be_v there_o describe_v allegorical_o by_o the_o destruction_n of_o gog_n and_o magog_n that_o be_v the_o destruction_n of_o those_o who_o shall_v then_o reject_v the_o saviour_n and_o oppose_v his_o people_n after_o he_o be_v tender_v to_o they_o concern_v those_o who_o have_v the_o scripture_n for_o by_o those_o scripture_n they_o may_v come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o saviour_n in_o this_o life_n which_o be_v as_o much_o as_o concern_v they_o and_o 2._o have_v this_o resurrection_n and_o probation_n be_v put_v into_o the_o scripture_n yet_o those_o who_o have_v not_o those_o scripture_n in_o this_o life_n can_v for_o resurrection_n i_o say_v when_o the_o scripture_n do_v come_v to_o that_o point_n they_o do_v by_o the_o account_n that_o they_o then_o give_v we_o of_o the_o thousand_o year_n of_o the_o city_n of_o the_o saint_n of_o gog_n and_o magog_n etc._n etc._n compare_v with_o some_o other_o text_n give_v we_o some_o dusky_a glimpse_n of_o such_o a_o oeconomy_n and_o proceed_v 3._o the_o three_o and_o the_o description_n of_o the_o great_a white_a throne_n and_o he_o that_o sit_v upon_o it_o etc._n etc._n and_o this_o resurrection_n i_o take_v to_o be_v only_o the_o resurrection_n of_o gog_n and_o magog_n and_o of_o all_o other_o who_o have_v refuse_v the_o saviour_n in_o this_o life_n as_o gog_n and_o magog_n do_v after_o their_o resurrection_n 1._o for_o first_o the_o faithful_a in_o this_o life_n be_v raise_v in_o the_o four_o verse_n and_o die_v no_o more_o all_o then_o that_o be_v raise_v at_o the_o first_o resurrection_n i_o take_v to_o be_v one_o part_n of_o those_o who_o be_v write_v in_o the_o book_n of_o life_n for_o though_o the_o description_n of_o those_o raise_v in_o the_o four_o verse_n may_v not_o seem_v and_o be_v not_o think_v by_o some_o to_o extend_v to_o all_o resurrection_n shall_v believe_v and_o be_v save_v and_o that_o too_o before_o the_o great_a white_a throne_n be_v set_v and_o indeed_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v think_v that_o the_o saviour_n shall_v be_v make_v know_v to_o they_o unless_o some_o of_o they_o be_v to_o have_v receive_v and_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o therefore_o i_o do_v entire_o exclude_v both_o these_o sort_n of_o believer_n that_o be_v in_o other_o word_n i_o do_v exclude_v all_o who_o shall_v be_v save_v out_o of_o this_o three_o and_o last_o resurrection_n and_o he_o who_o shall_v well_o weigh_v and_o consider_v the_o account_n that_o be_v give_v of_o the_o great_a judgement_n mention_v in_o the_o eleven_o and_o follow_a verse_n will_v i_o believe_v be_v satisfy_v that_o it_o be_v only_o the_o judgement_n pass_v upon_o unbeliever_n for_o as_o the_o book_n that_o be_v open_v be_v mention_v as_o distinct_a from_o the_o book_n of_o life_n so_o it_o be_v express_o say_v that_o they_o be_v judge_v out_o of_o the_o book_n if_o therefore_o the_o book_n of_o life_n do_v contain_v in_o it_o all_o that_o be_v save_v as_o most_o notorious_o so_o it_o do_v for_o beside_o the_o import_n of_o the_o phrase_n the_o text_n
