bruise_v reed_n and_o smoke_a flax_n not_o tree_n but_o reed_n and_o not_o whole_a but_o bruise_a reed_n the_o church_n be_v compare_v to_o weak_a thing_n to_o a_o dove_n among_o the_o fowl_n to_o a_o vine_n among_o the_o plant_n to_o thing_n sheep_n among_o the_o beast_n to_o a_o woman_n which_o be_v the_o weak_a vessel_n and_o here_o god_n child_n be_v compare_v to_o bruise_a reed_n and_o smoke_a flax._n and_o first_o we_o will_v speak_v of_o they_o as_o they_o be_v bruise_v reed_n and_o then_o as_o smoke_a flax_n they_o be_v bruise_v reed_n before_o their_o conversion_n and_o often_o time_n after_o before_o conversion_n all_o except_o such_o as_o be_v breed_v up_o in_o the_o church_n god_n have_v delight_v to_o show_v himself_o gracious_a unto_o from_o their_o childhood_n yet_o in_o different_a degree_n as_o god_n see_v meet_v and_o as_o difference_n be_v in_o regard_n of_o temper_n part_n manner_n of_o life_n etc._n etc._n so_o god_n intendment_n of_o employment_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v for_o usual_o he_o empty_v such_o of_o themselves_o and_o make_v they_o nothing_o before_o he_o will_v use_v they_o in_o any_o great_a service_n this_o bruise_a reed_n be_v a_o most_o see_v hence_o it_o be_v that_o we_o be_v save_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o faith_n that_o carry_v we_o out_o of_o ourselves_o to_o rely_v upon_o another_o and_o that_o faith_n work_v best_a alone_o when_o it_o have_v least_o outward_a support_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o we_o often_o fail_v in_o lesser_a conflict_n and_o stand_v out_o in_o great_a because_o in_o less_o we_o rest_v more_o in_o ourselves_o in_o great_a we_o fly_v to_o the_o rock_n of_o our_o salvation_n which_o be_v 〈◊〉_d high_o than_o we_o hence_o likewise_o it_o be_v that_o we_o be_v strong_a after_o foil_n because_o hide_a corruption_n undiscerned_a before_o be_v now_o discover_v and_o thence_o we_o be_v bring_v to_o make_v use_n of_o mercy_n pardon_v and_o power_n support_v one_o main_a ground_n of_o this_o dispensation_n be_v that_o we_o shall_v know_v it_o be_v christ_n that_o give_v both_o the_o will_n and_o the_o deed_n and_o that_o as_o a_o voluntary_a worker_n according_a to_o his_o own_o good_a be_v in_o hell_n here_o we_o know_v where_o to_o have_v this_o power_n and_o to_o who_o to_o return_v the_o praise_n of_o it_o and_o it_o be_v our_o happiness_n that_o it_o be_v so_o safe_o hide_v perfect_a conquest_n the_o five_o conclusion_n be_v that_o this_o prevail_a government_n conclusion_n shall_v not_o be_v without_o fight_v there_o can_v be_v no_o victory_n where_o there_o be_v no_o as_o to_o make_v void_a the_o work_n of_o grace_n but_o corruption_n in_o the_o issue_n yield_v to_o grace_v there_o be_v much_o adoc_n to_o bring_v christ_n into_o the_o heart_n and_o to_o settle_v a_o tribunal_n for_o he_o to_o judge_v there_o there_o be_v a_o army_n of_o lust_n mutiny_n against_o he_o the_o utmost_a strength_n of_o most_o man_n endeavour_n and_o part_n be_v to_o keep_v christ_n from_o rule_v in_o the_o soul_n the_o flesh_n still_o labour_v to_o maintain_v its_o own_o regency_n and_o therefore_o it_o cry_v down_o the_o credit_n of_o whatsoever_o cross_v it_o as_o god_n bless_a ordinance_n etc._n etc._n and_o high_o prize_v any_o thing_n though_o never_o so_o dead_a and_o empty_a if_o it_o give_v way_n to_o the_o liberty_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o no_o marvel_n if_o the_o spiritual_a government_n of_o christ_n be_v so_o oppose_v oppose_v 1_o because_o it_o be_v government_n &_o that_o limit_n the_o course_n of_o the_o will_n and_o cast_v a_o bridle_n upon_o awe_v and_o a_o argument_n of_o a_o low_a spirit_n to_o fear_v any_o even_o god_n himself_o until_o unavoidable_a danger_n seize_v on_o man_n and_o then_o those_o that_o fear_v lest_o out_o of_o danger_n fear_v most_o in_o danger_n as_o we_o see_v in_o balthasar_n 6._o 2_o it_o be_v spiritual_a government_n 2._o and_o therefore_o the_o less_o will_v flesh_n endure_v it_o christ_n government_n bring_v the_o very_a thought_n &_o desire_n which_o be_v the_o most_o immediate_a and_o free_a issue_n of_o the_o soul_n into_o obedience_n though_o a_o man_n be_v of_o so_o compose_v a_o carriage_n as_o a_o ans._n allower_n and_o maintainer_n but_o as_o a_o opposer_n subduer_v and_o in_o the_o end_n as_o a_o conqueror_n carnal_a man_n will_v fain_o bring_v christ_n and_o the_o flesh_n together_o and_o can_v be_v content_a with_o some_o reservation_n to_o submit_v to_o christ_n but_o christ_n will_v be_v no_o underling_n to_o any_o base_a affection_n and_o therefore_o where_o there_o be_v allowance_n of_o ourselves_o in_o any_o sinsull_n lust_n it_o be_v a_o sign_n the_o key_n be_v never_o give_v up_o to_o christ_n to_o rule_v we_o 3_o because_o it_o be_v judgement_n 3._o and_o man_n love_v not_o to_o be_v judge_v and_o censure_v now_o christ_n in_o his_o truth_n arraign_v they_o giveth_z sentence_n against_o they_o and_o bind_v they_o over_o to_o the_o latter_a judgement_n of_o the_o great_a day_n and_o therefore_o they_o take_v upon_o they_o to_o judge_v that_o truth_n that_o must_v judge_v they_o but_o truth_n will_v be_v too_o good_a for_o they_o man_n have_v a_o day_n
