to_o express_v it_o the_o more_o strong_o and_o emphatical_o and_o to_o show_v the_o firmness_n of_o the_o resolution_n it_o be_v repeat_v again_o i_o will_v not_o offend_v any_o more_o and_o then_o in_o the_o next_o verse_n if_o i_o have_v do_v iniquity_n i_o will_v do_v no_o more_o and_o this_o be_v so_o necessary_a a_o part_n of_o repentance_n that_o herein_o the_o very_a essence_n and_o formal_a nature_n of_o repentance_n do_v consist_v viz._n in_o the_o firm_a and_o sincere_a purpose_n and_o resolution_n of_o a_o better_a course_n in_o the_o handle_n of_o this_o argument_n i_o shall_v do_v these_o six_o thing_n i._o i_o shall_v show_v what_o resolution_n be_v in_o general_n ii_o what_o be_v the_o special_a object_n of_o this_o kind_n of_o resolution_n iii_o what_o be_v employ_v in_o a_o sincere_a resolution_n of_o leave_v our_o sin_n and_o return_v to_o god_n iv_o i_o shall_v show_v that_o in_o this_o resolution_n of_o amendment_n the_o very_a essence_n and_o formal_a nature_n of_o repentance_n do_v consist_v v._o i_o shall_v offer_v some_o consideration_n to_o convince_v man_n both_o of_o the_o necessity_n and_o fitness_n of_o this_o resolution_n and_o of_o keep_v steadfast_o to_o it_o sure_o it_o be_v meet_v to_o be_v say_v unto_o god_n i_o will_v not_o offend_v any_o more_o vi_o i_o shall_v add_v some_o brief_a direction_n concern_v the_o manage_n and_o maintain_v of_o this_o holy_a and_o necessary_a resolution_n i._o what_o resolution_n in_o general_n be_v it_o be_v a_o fix_a determination_n of_o the_o will_n about_o any_o thing_n either_o to_o do_v it_o or_o not_o to_o do_v it_o as_o upon_o due_a deliberation_n we_o have_v judge_v and_o conclude_v it_o to_o be_v necessary_a or_o convenient_a to_o be_v do_v or_o not_o to_o be_v do_v by_o we_o and_o this_o suppose_v three_o thing_n 1._o resolution_n suppose_v a_o precedent_a deliberation_n of_o the_o mind_n about_o the_o thing_n to_o be_v resolve_v upon_o for_o no_o prudent_a man_n do_v determine_v or_o resolve_v upon_o any_o thing_n till_o he_o have_v consider_v the_o thing_n and_o weigh_v it_o well_o with_o himself_o and_o have_v full_o debate_v the_o necessity_n and_o expedience_n of_o it_o what_o advantage_n he_o shall_v have_v by_o the_o do_n of_o it_o and_o what_o danger_n and_o inconvenience_n will_v certain_o or_o very_o probable_o redound_v to_o he_o by_o the_o neglect_n and_o omission_n of_o it_o for_o peremptory_o to_o determine_v and_o resolve_v upon_o any_o thing_n before_o a_o man_n have_v do_v this_o be_v not_o proper_o resolution_n but_o precipitancy_n and_o rashness_n 2._o resolution_n suppose_v some_o judgement_n pass_v upon_o the_o thing_n after_o a_o man_n have_v thus_o deliberate_v about_o it_o that_o he_o be_v satisfy_v in_o his_o mind_n one_o way_n or_o other_o concern_v it_o that_o his_o understanding_n be_v convince_v either_o that_o it_o be_v necessary_a and_o convenient_a for_o he_o to_o do_v it_o or_o that_o it_o be_v not_o and_o this_o be_v sometime_o call_v resolution_n but_o be_v not_o that_o resolution_n which_o immediate_o determine_v a_o man_n to_o action_n this_o judgement_n of_o the_o necessity_n and_o fitness_n of_o the_o thing_n be_v not_o the_o resolution_n of_o the_o will_n but_o of_o the_o understanding_n for_o it_o do_v not_o signify_v that_o a_o man_n have_v full_o determine_v to_o do_v the_o thing_n but_o that_o he_o have_v determine_v with_o himself_o that_o it_o be_v reasonable_a to_o be_v do_v and_o that_o he_o be_v no_o long_o in_o doubt_n and_o suspense_n whether_o it_o be_v best_a for_o he_o to_o do_v it_o or_o not_o but_o be_v in_o his_o mind_n resolve_v and_o satisfy_v one_o way_n or_o other_o and_o these_o be_v two_o very_a different_a thing_n to_o be_v resolve_v in_o one_o judgement_n that_o be_v to_o be_v convince_v that_o a_o thing_n be_v fit_a and_o necessary_a to_o be_v do_v and_o to_o be_v resolve_v to_o set_v upon_o the_o do_n of_o it_o for_o many_o man_n be_v thus_o convince_v of_o the_o fitness_n and_o necessity_n of_o the_o thing_n who_o yet_o have_v not_o the_o heart_n can_v bring_v themselves_o to_o a_o firm_a and_o fix_a resolution_n to_o set_v upon_o the_o do_n of_o it_o so_o that_o a_o act_n of_o the_o judgement_n must_v go_v before_o the_o resolution_n of_o the_o will_n for_o as_o he_o be_v rash_a that_o resolve_v to_o do_v a_o thing_n before_o he_o have_v deliberate_v about_o it_o so_o he_o be_v blind_a and_o wilful_a that_o resolve_v to_o do_v a_o thing_n before_o his_o judgement_n be_v satisfy_v whether_o it_o be_v best_a for_o he_o to_o do_v it_o or_o not_o 3._o if_o the_o matter_n be_v of_o considerable_a moment_n and_o consequence_n resolution_n suppose_v some_o motion_n of_o the_o affection_n which_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o bias_n upon_o the_o will_n a_o certain_a propension_n and_o inclination_n that_o a_o man_n feel_v in_o himself_o either_o urge_v he_o to_o do_v a_o thing_n or_o withdraw_v he_o from_o it_o deliberation_n and_o judgement_n they_o direct_v a_o man_n what_o to_o do_v or_o leave_v undo_v the_o affection_n excite_v and_o quicken_v a_o man_n to_o take_v some_o resolution_n in_o the_o matter_n that_o be_v to_o do_v suitable_o to_o the_o judgement_n his_o mind_n have_v pass_v upon_o the_o thing_n for_o instance_n a_o great_a sinner_n reflect_v upon_o his_o life_n and_o consider_v what_o he_o have_v do_v what_o the_o course_n be_v that_o he_o live_v in_o and_o what_o the_o issue_n and_o consequence_n of_o it_o will_v probable_o or_o certain_o be_v whether_o it_o will_v make_v he_o happy_a or_o miserable_a in_o the_o conclusion_n and_o debate_v the_o matter_n calm_o and_o sober_o with_o himself_o he_o be_v satisfy_v and_o convince_v of_o the_o evil_a and_o danger_n of_o a_o wicked_a life_n and_o consequent_o that_o it_o be_v best_a for_o he_o to_o resolve_v upon_o a_o better_a course_n that_o be_v to_o repent_v now_o these_o thought_n must_v needs_o awaken_v in_o he_o fearful_a apprehension_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o almighty_a god_n which_o be_v due_a to_o he_o for_o his_o sin_n and_o hang_v over_o he_o and_o which_o he_o be_v every_o moment_n in_o danger_n of_o if_o he_o go_v on_o in_o his_o evil_a course_n these_o thought_n be_v apt_a likewise_o to_o fill_v he_o with_o shame_n and_o confusion_n at_o the_o remembrance_n of_o his_o horrible_a ingratitude_n to_o god_n his_o maker_n his_o best_a friend_n and_o great_a benefactor_n and_o of_o his_o desperate_a folly_n in_o provoke_v omnipotent_a justice_n against_o himself_o whereupon_o he_o be_v hearty_o grieve_v and_o trouble_v for_o what_o he_o have_v do_v and_o these_o affection_n of_o fear_n and_o shame_n and_o sorrow_n be_v once_o up_o they_o come_v with_o great_a violence_n upon_o the_o will_n and_o urge_v the_o man_n to_o a_o speedy_a resolution_n of_o change_v his_o course_n and_o leave_v the_o way_n he_o be_v in_o which_o he_o be_v full_o convince_v be_v so_o evil_a and_o dangerous_a and_o of_o betake_v himself_o to_o another_o course_n which_o he_o be_v full_o satisfy_v will_v be_v much_o more_o for_o his_o safety_n and_o advantage_n so_o that_o resolution_n in_o general_n be_v a_o fix_a determination_n of_o the_o will_n that_o be_v such_o a_o determination_n as_o be_v not_o only_o for_o the_o present_a free_a from_o all_o waver_a and_o doubt_v but_o such_o as_o can_v prudent_o be_v alter_v so_o long_o as_o the_o reason_n remain_v for_o the_o man_n who_o upon_o full_a deliberation_n and_o conviction_n of_o his_o mind_n resolve_v upon_o any_o thing_n can_v without_o the_o imputation_n of_o sickleness_n and_o inconstancy_n quit_v that_o resolution_n so_o long_o as_o he_o have_v the_o same_o reason_n which_o he_o have_v when_o he_o take_v it_o up_o and_o be_v still_o satisfy_v that_o the_o reason_n be_v good_a for_o instance_n the_o man_n who_o have_v take_v up_o a_o resolution_n to_o be_v sober_a because_o of_o the_o ugliness_n and_o unreasonableness_n of_o drunkenness_n and_o the_o temporal_a inconvenience_n and_o eternal_a damnation_n which_o that_o sin_n expose_v a_o man_n to_o if_o these_o reason_n be_v true_a and_o good_a can_v never_o prudent_o alter_v the_o resolution_n which_o he_o have_v take_v and_o return_v to_o that_o sin_n again_o ii_o let_v we_o consider_v what_o be_v the_o special_a object_n or_o matter_n of_o this_o resolution_n wherein_o the_o formal_a nature_n of_o repentance_n do_v consist_v what_o it_o be_v that_o a_o man_n when_o he_o repent_v resolve_n upon_o and_o that_o i_o tell_v you_o be_v to_o leave_v his_o sin_n and_o to_o return_v to_o god_n and_o his_o duty_n and_o this_o be_v the_o resolution_n which_o the_o

and_o the_o judgement_n of_o another_o world_n for_o this_o reason_n hold_v against_o every_o sin_n and_o remain_v always_o the_o same_o but_o that_o it_o be_v take_v up_o upon_o some_o inferior_a consideration_n either_o because_o of_o the_o shame_n and_o infamy_n of_o it_o among_o man_n or_o because_o of_o some_o other_o temporal_a inconvenience_n which_o if_o the_o man_n can_v be_v secure_v against_o he_o will_v present_o break_v his_o resolution_n and_o return_v to_o the_o commission_n of_o that_o sin_n with_o as_o much_o freedom_n as_o any_o other_o 2._o a_o sincere_a resolution_n imply_v a_o resolution_n of_o the_o mean_n as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o end_n he_o that_o be_v true_o and_o honest_o resolve_v against_o any_o sin_n be_v likewise_o resolve_v to_o avoid_v as_o much_o as_o be_v possible_a the_o occasion_n and_o temptation_n which_o may_v lead_v or_o draw_v he_o to_o that_o sin_n or_o if_o they_o happen_v to_o present_v themselves_o to_o he_o he_o be_v resolve_v to_o stand_v upon_o his_o guard_n and_o to_o resist_v they_o in_o like_a manner_n he_o that_o sincere_o resolve_v upon_o do_v his_o duty_n in_o any_o kind_n must_v resolve_v upon_o the_o mean_n that_o be_v requisite_a and_o necessary_a to_o the_o due_a discharge_n and_o performance_n of_o that_o duty_n as_o he_o that_o resolve_v against_o that_o needless_a and_o useless_a sin_n of_o swear_v in_o common_a conversation_n must_v resolve_v also_o to_o set_v a_o guard_n before_o the_o door_n of_o his_o lip_n see_v it_o be_v certain_a that_o it_o require_v great_a care_n and_o attention_n at_o least_o for_o some_o competent_a time_n to_o get_v rid_v of_o a_o habit_n when_o david_n resolve_v not_o to_o offend_v with_o his_o tongue_n he_o resolve_v at_o the_o same_o time_n to_o be_v very_o watchful_a over_o himself_o psal_n 39.1_o i_o say_v i_o will_v take_v heed_n to_o my_o way_n that_o i_o offend_v not_o with_o my_o tongue_n i_o will_v keep_v my_o mouth_n as_o with_o a_o bridle_n while_o the_o wicked_a be_v before_o i_o for_o a_o man_n to_o resolve_v against_o any_o sin_n or_o vice_n and_o yet_o to_o involve_v himself_o continual_o in_o the_o occasion_n and_o to_o run_v himself_o into_o the_o company_n and_o temptation_n which_o do_v natural_o and_o will_v almost_o necessary_o lead_v and_o betray_v he_o into_o those_o sin_n be_v a_o plain_a evidence_n of_o insincerity_n this_o i_o take_v for_o a_o certain_a rule_n that_o whatever_o can_v reasonable_o move_v a_o man_n to_o resolve_v upon_o any_o end_n will_n if_o his_o resolution_n be_v sincere_a and_o honest_a determine_v he_o every_o whit_n as_o strong_o to_o use_v all_o those_o mean_n which_o be_v necessary_a in_o order_n to_o that_o end_n but_o of_o this_o i_o have_v speak_v elsewhere_o 3._o a_o sincere_a resolution_n of_o leave_v our_o sin_n and_o return_v to_o god_n and_o our_o duty_n do_v imply_v the_o present_a time_n and_o that_o we_o be_v to_o resolve_v speedy_o and_o without_o delay_n to_o put_v this_o resolution_n in_o practice_n that_o we_o be_v peremptory_o determine_v not_o to_o go_v one_o step_n far_o in_o the_o way_n of_o sin_n not_o to_o neglect_v any_o duty_n that_o god_n require_v of_o we_o not_o for_o one_o moment_n but_o immediate_o and_o forthwith_o to_o set_v upon_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o so_o soon_o as_o occasion_n and_o opportunity_n be_v offer_v to_o we_o and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o be_v evident_a because_o the_o very_a same_o consideration_n that_o prevail_v upon_o any_o man_n to_o take_v up_o this_o resolution_n of_o amendment_n and_o change_v the_o course_n of_o his_o life_n be_v every_o whit_n as_o prevalent_a to_o engage_v he_o to_o put_v this_o resolution_n present_o in_o practice_n and_o execution_n i_o deny_v not_o but_o a_o man_n may_v resolve_v upon_o a_o thing_n for_o the_o future_a and_o when_o the_o time_n come_v may_v execute_v his_o resolution_n and_o this_o resolution_n may_v for_o all_o that_o be_v very_o sincere_a and_o real_a though_o it_o be_v delay_v to_o a_o certain_a time_n because_o he_o do_v not_o see_v reason_n to_o resolve_v to_o do_v the_o thing_n soon_o but_o it_o can_v be_v so_o in_o this_o case_n of_o repentance_n because_o there_o can_v no_o good_a reason_n be_v imagine_v why_o a_o man_n shall_v resolve_v seven_o year_n hence_o to_o change_v his_o course_n and_o break_v off_o his_o sinful_a life_n but_o the_o very_a same_o reason_n will_v hold_v as_o strong_o why_o he_o shall_v do_v it_o present_o and_o without_o delay_n and_o over_o and_o beside_o this_o there_o be_v a_o great_a many_o and_o powerful_a reason_n and_o consideration_n why_o he_o shall_v rather_o put_v this_o good_a resolution_n in_o present_a execution_n than_o put_v it_o off_o and_o defer_v it_o to_o any_o far_a own_o fear_n and_o the_o vengeance_n of_o almighty_a god_n so_o much_o the_o soon_o upon_o thou_o for_o nothing_o provoke_v god_n to_o take_v a_o speedy_a course_n with_o sinner_n and_o do_v more_o quicken_v the_o pace_n of_o his_o judgement_n than_o wilful_a continuance_n in_o sin_n and_o yet_o far_o if_o thy_o resolution_n be_v valuable_a and_o considerable_a to_o thou_o thou_o take_v the_o most_o effectual_a course_n in_o the_o world_n to_o frustrate_v and_o defeat_v it_o thou_o be_v full_o resolve_v to_o leave_v thy_o sin_n hereafter_o and_o thou_o think_v thou_o have_v reason_n for_o upon_o easy_a term_n no_o the_o term_n and_o condition_n of_o god_n mercy_n be_v already_o fix_v and_o establish_v so_o as_o never_o to_o be_v alter_v so_o that_o whatever_o reason_n thou_o can_v and_o this_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o that_o which_o be_v mean_v by_o faith_n towards_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n which_o the_o apostle_n say_v be_v one_o subject_a of_o his_o preach_n and_o the_o proper_a and_o genuine_a effect_n of_o this_o faith_n be_v to_o live_v as_o we_o believe_v to_o conform_v our_o life_n to_o the_o doctrine_n to_o the_o truth_n whereof_o we_o assent_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o true_a christian_n that_o be_v those_o who_o fashion_v their_o life_n according_a to_o the_o gospel_n be_v call_v believer_n and_o the_o whole_a of_o christianity_n be_v many_o time_n contain_v in_o this_o word_n believe_v which_o be_v the_o great_a principle_n of_o a_o christian_a life_n as_o in_o the_o old_a testament_n all_o religion_n be_v express_v by_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n so_o in_o the_o new_a by_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o now_o you_o see_v what_o be_v include_v in_o repentance_n and_o faith_n you_o may_v easy_o judge_v whether_o these_o be_v not_o the_o sum_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o man_n will_v forsake_v their_o sin_n and_o turn_v to_o god_n and_o believe_v the_o revelation_n of_o the_o gospel_n concern_v jesus_n christ_n that_o be_v hearty_o entertain_v it_o and_o submit_v to_o it_o what_o do_v christ_n preach_v to_o the_o jew_n but_o that_o they_o will_v repent_v of_o their_o sin_n and_o believe_v on_o he_o as_o the_o messiah_n and_o what_o do_v the_o apostle_n preach_v but_o to_o the_o same_o purpose_n when_o st._n peter_n preach_v to_o the_o jew_n act_n 2._o the_o effect_n of_o his_o sermon_n and_o the_o scope_n of_o it_o be_v to_o persuade_v they_o to_o repent_v and_o be_v baptize_v in_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n that_o be_v to_o profess_v their_o belief_n in_o he_o v._o 38._o and_o so_o act_v 3.19_o this_o be_v the_o persuasive_n to_o these_o two_o duty_n of_o repentance_n and_o faith_n second_o for_o the_o necessity_n of_o these_o doctrine_n they_o be_v necessary_a for_o the_o escape_n of_o eternal_a misery_n but_o of_o that_o which_o be_v more_o terrible_a the_o heavy_a displeasure_n and_o the_o fiery_a indignation_n of_o almighty_a god_n into_o who_o hand_n it_o be_v a_o fearful_a thing_n to_o fall_v i_o say_v they_o think_v that_o if_o they_o can_v but_o do_v thus_o much_o god_n will_v accept_v this_o for_o a_o true_a repentance_n and_o hereupon_o grant_v they_o pardon_n and_o eternal_a life_n and_o of_o their_o life_n and_o to_o put_v he_o off_o with_o a_o few_o unprofitable_a sigh_n and_o tear_n at_o their_o departure_n out_o of_o the_o world_n our_o saviour_n tell_v we_o that_o it_o be_v not_o every_o one_o that_o shall_v say_v unto_o he_o lord_n lord_n that_o shall_v enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n and_o that_o there_o be_v a_o time_n when_o many_o shall_v seek_v to_o enter_v
