he_o and_o hence_o when_o the_o lord_n come_v with_o life_n he_o come_v in_o by_o light_n eph._n 5._o 14._o christ_n shall_v give_v thou_o light_n and_o hence_o when_o the_o gospel_n come_v to_o take_v away_o all_o darkness_n and_o sin_n it_o be_v say_v satan_n chief_a policy_n lie_v in_o this_o to_o blind_a man_n eye_n 2_o cor._n 4._o 4._o either_o by_o obscure_v the_o light_n or_o by_o he_o to_o fear_v the_o lord_n have_v by_o his_o spirit_n in_o the_o word_n discover_v and_o find_v out_o his_o sin_n the_o thief_n be_v take_v and_o apprehend_v and_o condemn_v he_o hear_v still_o but_o yet_o can_v find_v no_o peace_n why_o because_o he_o live_v in_o those_o sin_n that_o he_o be_v convince_v of_o hence_o the_o word_n raise_v damp_n and_o heart-qualm_n that_o he_o have_v no_o peace_n but_o be_v ever_o pull_v from_o his_o own_o bottom_n and_o hypocrisy_n and_o the_o word_n discover_v more_o sin_n and_o hence_o have_v no_o peace_n the_o word_n will_v not_o give_v nor_o offer_v christ_n and_o a_o base_a lust_n together_o nor_o will_v not_o suffer_v any_o to_o have_v they_o both_o in_o peace_n hereupon_o the_o soul_n find_v no_o rest_n nor_o peace_n which_o the_o false_a heart_n seek_v for_o chief_o fly_v from_o the_o light_n especial_o if_o it_o have_v find_v out_o a_o short_a cut_n to_o its_o peace_n by_o any_o device_n or_o golden_a delusion_n of_o man_n and_o now_o they_o will_v hear_v there_o no_o more_o and_o now_o the_o publisher_n of_o god_n truth_n be_v tyrannical_a torment_n of_o the_o conscience_n of_o they_o that_o be_v weak_a false_a prophet_n that_o lead_v they_o out_o of_o the_o way_n of_o peace_n and_o because_o of_o this_o they_o think_v they_o be_v lead_v out_o of_o the_o way_n of_o truth_n because_o out_o of_o the_o way_n of_o peace_n or_o if_o they_o do_v come_v they_o can_v sit_v with_o disdain_n and_o contempt_n of_o man_n alas_o they_o speak_v according_a to_o their_o light_n and_o of_o all_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n which_o shall_v one_o day_n be_v preach_v over_o again_o in_o flame_n of_o fire_n to_o their_o eternal_a horror_n rev._n 6._o 2._o it_o be_v say_v christ_n ride_v on_o a_o white_a horse_n concern_v these_o vessel_n and_o the_o oil_n in_o they_o vessel_n be_v the_o place_n only_o of_o receive_v and_o preserve_v the_o oil_n for_o the_o continual_a burn_a and_o shine_v of_o the_o lamp_n so_o that_o though_o in_o some_o scripture_n by_o lamp_n be_v understand_v both_o the_o vessel_n and_o the_o lamp_n by_o a_o figure_n yet_o in_o distinct_a phrase_n of_o speech_n that_o be_v proper_o the_o lamp_n which_o burn_v and_o give_v light_a and_o that_o which_o contain_v the_o oil_n to_o nourish_v this_o be_v the_o vessel_n so_o that_o the_o vessel_n be_v not_o separate_v thing_n from_o the_o lamp_n as_o though_o the_o lamp_n be_v in_o one_o hand_n and_o a_o vessel_n in_o the_o other_o this_o be_v neither_o the_o custom_n nor_o comeliness_n of_o that_o age_n to_o cumber_v themselves_o thus_o but_o the_o lamp_n as_o it_o be_v in_o we_o be_v that_o part_n which_o be_v kindle_v and_o light_v the_o vessel_n that_o which_o keep_v the_o oil_n to_o serve_v this_o end_n and_o hence_o the_o folly_n of_o five_o of_o they_o appear_v that_o they_o will_v carry_v burn_a lamp_n with_o empty_a vessel_n just_a as_o if_o a_o man_n shall_v draw_v the_o wick_n through_o the_o oil_n that_o it_o may_v burn_v for_o a_o time_n and_o provide_v no_o oil_n in_o the_o vessel_n to_o maintain_v the_o lamp_n however_o all_o come_v to_o one_o if_o they_o be_v separate_v in_o respect_n of_o that_o that_o i_o aim_v at_o thus_o literal_o we_o see_v what_o the_o lamp_n vessel_n and_o oil_n be_v now_o what_o be_v spiritual_o mean_v thereby_o 1._o for_o the_o oil_n what_o be_v that_o i_o intend_v not_o here_o to_o show_v the_o fond_a and_o various_a apprehension_n of_o popish_a writer_n who_o understand_v by_o oil_n alm_n good_a work_n a_o good_a intention_n etc._n etc._n but_o by_o oil_n be_v mean_v the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o grace_n of_o it_o peculiar_a to_o all_o the_o elect_n and_o thus_o in_o scripture_n phrase_n 1_o john_n 2._o 27._o the_o spirit_n be_v call_v the_o anoint_v and_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n cant._n 1._o 3_o the_o smell_n of_o christ_n ointment_n harlot_n love_v he_o for_o the_o gift_n he_o send_v but_o virgin_n for_o the_o grace_n he_o have_v that_o oil_n which_o run_v first_o on_o our_o aaron_n head_n and_o run_v down_o to_o his_o skirt_n be_v here_o mean_v now_o as_o christ_n himself_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n without_o grace_n nor_o these_o without_o the_o spirit_n but_o both_o so_o both_o these_o be_v in_o he_o as_o in_o the_o fountain_n they_o be_v in_o we_o as_o in_o the_o vessel_n 2._o christ_n be_v the_o fountain_n of_o all_o grace_n and_o have_v the_o spirit_n without_o measure_n and_o therefore_o have_v enough_o to_o spare_v he_o can_v be_v mean_v by_o these_o vessel_n which_o have_v but_o their_o measure_n and_o such_o a_o measure_n as_o that_o they_o have_v none_o to_o spare_v for_o the_o other_o therefore_o by_o vessel_n be_v mean_v principal_o the_o precious_a soul_n of_o the_o faithful_a into_o which_o this_o golden_a oil_n be_v put_v and_o therefore_o 2_o cor._n 4._o 7._o we_o have_v this_o treasure_n in_o earthen_a vessel_n and_o rom._n 9_o 23._o they_o be_v vessel_n of_o glory_n prepare_v unto_o glory_n and_o so_o frequent_o so_o that_o herein_o the_o foolish_a fall_n short_a for_o the_o foolish_a boast_v of_o christ_n out_o of_o they_o but_o where_o be_v the_o spirit_n and_o virtue_n of_o christ_n in_o they_o and_o this_o be_v conceive_v to_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o the_o main_a difference_n be_v not_o make_v by_o the_o want_n of_o the_o external_a principle_n viz._n christ_n but_o by_o want_n of_o the_o internal_a principle_n and_o work_n this_o they_o have_v not_o 1._o they_o have_v so_o much_o oil_n i._n e._n light_a stroke_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o kindle_v a_o profession_n but_o they_o have_v not_o enough_o 2._o they_o have_v so_o much_o oil_n and_o light_n as_o continue_v their_o profession_n for_o a_o while_n but_o it_o continue_v not_o long_o here_o therefore_o observe_v these_o four_o thing_n that_o the_o precious_a soul_n of_o the_o faithful_a be_v vessel_n make_v only_o or_o chief_o to_o receive_v and_o preserve_v the_o presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o grace_n of_o christ._n 1_o that_o within_o these_o vessel_n there_o be_v a_o inward_a principle_n of_o grace_n and_o life_n 2._o that_o there_o be_v a_o certain_a measure_n 3_o degree_n plenitude_n or_o fullness_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o faithful_a which_o the_o unsound_a though_o most_o glorious_a professor_n of_o the_o gospel_n fall_v short_a of_o that_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o saint_n wherewith_o their_o heart_n by_o the_o spirit_n be_v fill_v 4._o be_v constant_a and_o of_o a_o everlasting_a and_o eternal_a nature_n these_o three_o last_o answer_n three_o question_n if_o any_o ask_v the_o difference_n between_o the_o virgin_n the_o foolish_a want_n and_o the_o wise_a have_v a_o inward_a principle_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n if_o it_o be_v say_v hypocrite_n have_v a_o inward_a work_n yet_o this_o inward_a principle_n be_v such_o a_o fullness_n of_o spirit_n which_o they_o ever_o fall_v short_a of_o and_o this_o will_v make_v they_o know_v for_o the_o present_a if_o again_o it_o be_v say_v that_o many_o flourish_n glorious_o for_o a_o time_n yet_o it_o be_v of_o a_o everlasting_a nature_n and_o this_o will_v manifest_v they_o one_o from_o another_o in_o time_n to_o come_v the_o first_o point_n therefore_o i_o will_v only_o touch_v on_o now_o sect_n ii_o that_o the_o precious_a soul_n and_o heart_n of_o all_o the_o faithful_a be_v vessel_n make_v chief_o and_o only_o to_o receive_v and_o preserve_v the_o spirit_n and_o grace_n of_o christ_n 1._o or_o the_o gracious_a presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n that_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o wicked_a they_o be_v make_v only_o to_o hold_v satan_n sin_n and_o wrath_n and_o so_o fit_v for_o destruction_n so_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o saint_n be_v make_v and_o fit_v only_o to_o receive_v and_o nourish_v the_o spirit_n grace_n and_o love_n of_o christ._n that_o as_o it_o be_v with_o prince_n the_o best_a room_n be_v reserve_v only_o for_o they_o their_o attendant_n may_v come_v in_o and_o out_o to_o serve_v they_o but_o it_o be_v their_o room_n their_o lodging_n so_o here_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o faithful_a and_o the_o best_a room_n best_a affection_n of_o it_o be_v only_o to_o entertain_v the_o lord_n and_o his_o grace_n and_o spirit_n yet_o other_o thing_n may_v come_v in_o and_o out_o as_o attendant_n to_o he_o to_o serve_v he_o but_o the_o room_n themselves_o be_v only_o for_o his_o proper_a use_n 2_o tim._n 2._o 20_o 21._o the_o church_n be_v god_n house_n now_o there_o be_v many_o vessel_n many_o soul_n some_o base_a of_o wood_n and_o earth_n some_o of_o honour_n what_o be_v these_o answ._n if_o a_o man_n purge_v himself_o from_o these_o for_o no_o man_n be_v bear_v with_o a_o next_o disposition_n to_o receive_v grace_n as_o a_o vessel_n full_a of_o puddle_n water_n that_o must_v first_o be_v cast_v out_o now_o when_o this_o be_v do_v he_o be_v a_o vessel_n meet_v for_o his_o master_n use_n prepare_v etc._n etc._n the_o best_a vessel_n abide_v in_o the_o house_n not_o for_o their_o own_o or_o servant_n use_v but_o for_o the_o master_n use_v only_o and_o though_o the_o spirit_n may_v withdraw_v for_o some_o time_n and_o they_o be_v unable_a to_o do_v any_o good_a work_n yet_o they_o be_v prepare_v for_o the_o spirit_n and_o so_o for_o every_o good_a work_n and_o here_o be_v all_o the_o use_n of_o the_o vessel_n of_o honour_n hypocrite_n be_v vessel_n of_o pomp_n and_o state_n and_o ornament_n oh_o the_o brave_a church_n of_o sardis_n the_o profound_a judgement_n deep_a head_n eminent_a christian_n but_o not_o vessel_n of_o honour_n because_o not_o vessel_n of_o use_n only_o for_o their_o master_n only_o to_o receive_v the_o eternal_a anoint_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n if_o you_o will_v know_v the_o certainty_n of_o this_o more_o full_o 1._o go_v and_o ask_v themselves_o be_v it_o so_o or_o no_o if_o they_o be_v of_o age_n and_o know_v themselves_o they_o will_v say_v i_o be_o the_o lord_n only_o isa._n 44_o 4_o 5._o when_o they_o spring_v up_o as_o willow_n by_o the_o watercourse_n one_o shall_v say_v i_o be_o the_o lord_n as_o that_o eminent_a light_n say_v when_o die_v oh_o lord_n i_o will_v be_v thou_o ask_v the_o world_n who_o they_o be_v and_o to_o what_o use_n and_o purpose_n they_o serve_v they_o
wonder_n if_o the_o city_n be_v take_v though_o never_o so_o strong_a if_o it_o grow_v once_o secure_a no_o wonder_n if_o the_o world_n be_v enter_v and_o man_n be_v grow_v more_o worldly_a and_o if_o satan_n be_v enter_v and_o man_n grow_v more_o passionate_a than_o ever_o before_o no_o wonder_n a_o man_n work_n be_v neglect_v if_o he_o be_v asleep_a ordinance_n more_o slight_v than_o ever_o before_o never_o shall_v you_o see_v security_n fall_v upon_o a_o man_n alone_o but_o it_o bring_v its_o train_n with_o it_o when_o the_o husbandman_n sleep_v tare_n will_v be_v sow_v and_o when_o the_o disciple_n sleep_v temptation_n will_v enter_v this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o lord_n testify_v of_o his_o people_n jer._n 2._o 2_o 3_o 4._o i_o remember_v what_o thou_o do_v in_o time_n of_o straits_n in_o a_o land_n not_o sow_v every_o one_o that_o touch_v you_o do_v offend_v but_o in_o the_o seven_o and_o eight_o verse_n when_o bring_v to_o a_o plentiful_a country_n they_o do_v not_o you_o have_v but_o long_o sleep_v this_o may_v be_v your_o condition_n for_o a_o time_n but_o you_o can_v continue_v so_o for_o ever_o if_o you_o be_v the_o lord_n but_o if_o you_o do_v continue_v so_o especial_o without_o bemoan_v this_o unto_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v a_o question_n whether_o ever_o there_o be_v that_o oil_n in_o your_o vessel_n which_o other_o have_v when_o not_o only_o a_o man_n act_n grow_v worse_o but_o the_o very_a spirit_n of_o a_o man_n degenerate_v when_o not_o only_o the_o leaf_n of_o the_o vine_n fall_v but_o the_o vine_n itself_o grow_v degenerate_a and_o hence_o continue_v so_o this_o be_v a_o sore_a evidence_n of_o a_o woeful_a state_n jer._n 2._o 20_o 21._o when_o the_o yoke_n be_v upon_o thy_o nick_n thou_o say_v thou_o will_v not_o transgress_v rather_o than_o awaken_v they_o hence_o the_o lord_n lay_v his_o iron_n hand_n upon_o a_o man_n and_o knock_v by_o blow_n and_o now_o when_o affliction_n be_v upon_o you_o now_o you_o can_v hear_v when_o as_o the_o wind_n and_o water_n be_v ready_a to_o tear_v the_o ship_n in_o piece_n now_o they_o inquire_v why_o be_v they_o send_v and_o the_o lot_n fall_v upon_o jonah_n who_o be_v then_o sleep_v it_o be_v easy_a to_o awaken_v out_o of_o natural_a sleep_n but_o very_o hard_o out_o of_o spiritual_a security_n all_o the_o terror_n of_o god_n on_o jonah_n within_o and_o without_o be_v little_a enough_o but_o at_o last_o he_o can_v hear_v and_o run_v on_o his_o errand_n psal._n 30._o 6_o 7._o why_o do_v god_n hide_v his_o face_n from_o david_n he_o say_v in_o prosperity_n he_o shall_v not_o be_v move_v this_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o the_o lord_n see_v you_o have_v need_n of_o it_o seldom_o shall_v one_o see_v a_o awaken_n christian_a without_o inward_a temptation_n and_o terror_n or_o outward_a sorrow_n oh_o consider_v then_o if_o the_o lord_n do_v meet_v with_o thou_o consider_v thy_o own_o security_n thou_o have_v be_v in_o or_o be_v apt_a to_o fall_v into_o this_o be_v the_o sin_n you_o must_v inquire_v after_o and_o find_v out_o and_o do_v not_o account_v it_o hard_o though_o long_o though_o bitter_a for_o never_o great_a misery_n than_o for_o the_o lord_n to_o say_v sleep_n on_o it_o be_v one_o of_o the_o heavy_a judgement_n for_o the_o lord_n to_o let_v a_o man_n go_v on_o in_o a_o secure_a condition_n without_o blow_n mark_v therefore_o unto_o the_o end_n of_o those_o blow_n to_o be_v thorough_o awaken_v by_o they_o for_o sometime_o when_o the_o lord_n send_v they_o a_o man_n if_o they_o be_v not_o very_o bitter_a if_o he_o have_v any_o rest_n lay_v they_o not_o to_o heart_n isa._n 42._o 25._o fire_n burn_v about_o he_o and_o in_o this_o country_n i_o know_v not_o what_o curse_n befall_v man_n peace_n make_v man_n secure_a and_o sorrow_n make_v man_n discontent_v and_o sink_v and_o discourage_v which_o may_v be_v for_o a_o fit_a in_o a_o saint_n but_o to_o continue_v so_o this_o be_v that_o ahab_n oh_o when_o as_o thou_o feel_v the_o blow_n look_v now_o that_o thou_o do_v awaken_v and_o be_v thankful_a for_o it_o that_o you_o meet_v with_o that_o you_o do_v never_o reckon_v upon_o viz._n to_o be_v fright_v out_o of_o security_n thereby_o sect_n vi_o of_o exhortation_n 4._o to_o watch_n over_o one_o another_o by_o exhort_v one_o another_o while_n it_o be_v call_v to_o day_n heb._n 3._o 13._o let_v both_o the_o watchman_n and_o member_n of_o church_n do_v this_o for_o this_o be_v one_o mean_v appoint_v by_o the_o lord_n to_o preserve_v the_o soul_n from_o sleep_v 1_o thes._n 5._o 1_o 5_o 6._o exhort_v one_o
