learned_a in_o some_o part_n of_o study_n yet_o they_o may_v be_v very_o blockish_a in_o some_o other_o beside_o the_o natural_a heart_n of_o man_n do_v not_o take_v any_o great_a delight_n in_o the_o study_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o therefore_o the_o answer_n of_o christ_n be_v proper_a you_o err_v not_o know_v the_o scripture_n or_o the_o power_n of_o god_n second_o in_o some_o it_o be_v because_o of_o their_o secret_a atheism_n many_o learned_a man_n be_v very_a atheist_n in_o heart_n and_o such_o be_v some_o of_o the_o pharisee_n for_o they_o neither_o know_v the_o father_n nor_o christ_n as_o he_o charge_v they_o three_o some_o have_v a_o spirit_n of_o slumber_n they_o have_v eye_n and_o yet_o can_v see_v as_o in_o the_o case_n of_o some_o of_o those_o pharisee_n they_o can_v not_o apply_v the_o very_a thing_n themselves_o speak_v for_o be_v ask_v about_o the_o king_n of_o the_o jew_n mat._n 2._o they_o can_v answer_v direct_o out_o of_o the_o scripture_n and_o give_v such_o sigâ—â—s_n of_o the_o messiah_n as_o do_v evident_o agree_v to_o jesus_n christ_n and_o yet_o these_o man_n be_v so_o infatuate_v that_o when_o god_n show_v they_o the_o man_n to_o who_o their_o own_o sign_n agree_v they_o can_v allow_v of_o he_o four_o in_o some_o it_o be_v envy_v they_o be_v so_o fret_v at_o the_o credit_n and_o fame_n of_o christ_n or_o such_o as_o sincere_o preach_v christ_n that_o for_o very_a envy_n they_o strive_v to_o destroy_v the_o work_n of_o god_n and_o to_o disparage_v the_o progress_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n they_o can_v endure_v to_o see_v all_o the_o world_n as_o they_o account_v it_o to_o follow_v christ._n five_o in_o other_o it_o be_v ambition_n and_o desire_v of_o preeminence_n and_o the_o quiet_a usurpation_n of_o the_o this_o point_n all_o judgement_n in_o this_o life_n be_v either_o spiritual_a or_o temporal_a by_o temporal_a judgement_n i_o mean_v such_o as_o have_v their_o proper_a effect_n on_o the_o outward_a man_n such_o as_o be_v poverty_n disgrace_n sickness_n imprisonment_n loss_n in_o man_n estate_n and_o the_o like_a by_o spiritual_a judgement_n i_o mean_v such_o as_o have_v their_o proper_a effect_n upon_o the_o soul_n as_o for_o example_n hardness_n of_o heart_n the_o spirit_n of_o slumber_n desertion_n or_o the_o absence_n of_o god_n the_o take_v away_o of_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o mind_n the_o withhold_a of_o the_o gospel_n the_o deliver_n of_o man_n up_o to_o the_o power_n of_o satan_n or_o to_o the_o love_n of_o lie_n terror_n of_o despair_n or_o take_v of_o offence_n of_o which_o latter_a in_o this_o place_n reason_n now_o these_o spiritual_a judgement_n be_v much_o worse_a than_o any_o of_o the_o former_a temporal_a cross_n first_o because_o these_o judgement_n light_a upon_o the_o best_a part_n of_o man_n which_o be_v the_o soul_n and_o by_o how_o much_o the_o soul_n be_v better_a than_o the_o body_n by_o so_o much_o it_o be_v worse_a to_o be_v distress_v in_o soul_n than_o in_o body_n second_o because_o they_o withhold_v from_o we_o the_o best_a good_a which_o be_v god_n or_o christ_n now_o that_o which_o straighten_v we_o in_o the_o best_a thing_n must_v needs_o be_v the_o worst_a kind_n of_o restraint_n three_o because_o these_o cross_n be_v more_o hardly_o cure_v it_o be_v much_o easy_a to_o heal_v a_o sickness_n in_o the_o body_n than_o a_o disease_n in_o the_o soul_n four_o because_o these_o judgement_n for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v inflict_v upon_o the_o worst_a offender_n i_o say_v for_o the_o most_o part_n for_o sometime_o the_o godly_a themselves_o may_v be_v scourge_v for_o a_o time_n and_o for_o just_a reason_n with_o some_o kind_n of_o spiritual_a judgement_n use_v the_o use_n may_v be_v first_o for_o reproof_n of_o the_o madness_n of_o multitude_n of_o people_n in_o the_o world_n that_o can_v be_v extreme_o vex_v and_o grieve_v for_o worldly_a cross_n yet_o have_v no_o sense_n or_o care_n of_o spiritual_a judgement_n they_o howâ—e_n upon_o their_o bed_n if_o god_n take_v from_o they_o corn_n or_o wine_n or_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o field_n but_o never_o grieve_v if_o god_n take_v the_o gospel_n from_o they_o they_o be_v much_o trouble_v if_o they_o lose_v the_o favour_n of_o their_o great_a friend_n but_o never_o mourn_v because_o god_n have_v forsake_v they_o they_o be_v very_o impatient_a if_o their_o body_n be_v sick_a and_o yet_o very_o quiet_a if_o their_o soul_n be_v sick_a they_o will_v think_v themselves_o undo_v if_o they_o be_v carry_v to_o prison_n who_o yet_o be_v not_o much_o move_v at_o it_o that_o god_n shall_v deliver_v they_o up_o to_o satan_n note_n and_o yet_o i_o will_v not_o be_v mistake_v i_o do_v not_o mean_v to_o say_v that_o wicked_a man_n shall_v not_o mourn_v for_o worldly_a or_o outward_a cross_n it_o be_v true_a godly_a man_n shall_v not_o or_o not_o with_o great_a sorrow_n but_o for_o wicked_a man_n they_o ought_v to_o be_v extreme_o grieve_v for_o every_o outward_a affliction_n because_o it_o come_v in_o wrath_n from_o god_n and_o be_v but_o the_o begin_n of_o evil_n but_o then_o two_o thing_n must_v be_v note_v first_o that_o their_o sorrow_n shall_v be_v godly_a viz._n for_o their_o sin_n that_o bring_v those_o judgement_n not_o for_o the_o cross_n itself_o second_o that_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v more_o trouble_v for_o spiritual_a judgement_n than_o for_o temporal_a second_o this_o shall_v much_o comfort_n godly_a man_n and_o woman_n in_o all_o their_o affliction_n and_o it_o shall_v make_v they_o patient_a because_o though_o god_n afflict_v they_o in_o their_o body_n or_o estate_n yet_o he_o spare_v their_o soul_n and_o do_v not_o execute_v those_o outward_a cross_n but_o with_o much_o compassion_n three_o it_o shall_v teach_v we_o how_o to_o pray_v in_o the_o case_n of_o affliction_n if_o they_o be_v spiritual_a judgement_n we_o may_v pray_v direct_o for_o the_o removeall_n of_o they_o but_o for_o temporal_a judgement_n we_o must_v pray_v with_o condition_n and_o thus_o of_o the_o general_a observation_n before_o i_o enter_v upon_o the_o particular_a break_n open_a of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o this_o verse_n it_o
