bad_a or_o imperfect_a only_a their_o bad_a quality_n or_o action_n the_o bad_a effect_n and_o consequence_n of_o these_o and_o not_o at_o all_o or_o but_o little_a of_o what_o be_v good_a we_o judge_v they_o much_o worse_a than_o they_o be_v judge_v they_o to_o have_v do_v a_o great_a many_o and_o very_o bad_a action_n to_o have_v a_o great_a many_o and_o very_o bad_a quality_n but_o none_o or_o very_o few_o good_a this_o as_o it_o be_v the_o most_o mischievous_a so_o it_o be_v the_o more_o frequent_a extreme_a man_n be_v now_o so_o far_o from_o that_o humane_a and_o christian_a temper_n of_o universal_a kindness_n and_o goodwill_n that_o they_o be_v but_o very_o few_o they_o care_v for_o or_o to_o who_o they_o be_v dispose_v friendly_a in_o comparison_n of_o those_o they_o do_v not_o this_o again_o may_v sometime_o proceed_v from_o mere_a necessary_a ignorance_n and_o want_n of_o information_n for_o sometime_o a_o man_n may_v have_v see_v or_o otherwise_o know_v much_o good_a by_o constitution_n in_o domestic_a private_a and_o personal_a affair_n whence_o ofttimes_o we_o hurry_v and_o haste_n to_o mend_v thing_n for_o the_o worse_o and_o be_v discontent_a ill_a at_o ease_n suspend_v or_o pronounce_v doubtful_o or_o according_a only_o to_o appear_v probability_n it_o be_v true_a they_o say_v and_o think_v thing_n to_o be_v true_a very_o confident_o and_o strong_o but_o this_o not_o because_o they_o see_v the_o truth_n of_o what_o they_o affirm_v but_o because_o they_o will_v have_v it_o true_a not_o because_o their_o understanding_n and_o perception_n go_v before_o their_o judgement_n and_o their_o natural_a affection_n to_o truth_n make_v they_o so_o judge_v but_o some_o other_o disposition_n of_o will_n such_o as_o i_o have_v so_o often_o name_v activity_n curiosity_n pride_n hatred_n envy_n anger_n contempt_n flattery_n etc._n etc._n whereas_o we_o shall_v be_v very_o careful_a to_o possess_v our_o mind_n with_o such_o a_o serious_a love_n of_o the_o truth_n that_o we_o may_v have_v a_o constant_a reverend_a regard_n thereto_o in_o all_o our_o judgement_n and_o speech_n concern_v other_o and_o this_o we_o shall_v do_v without_o much_o trouble_n if_o we_o use_v ourselves_o thereto_o and_o do_v but_o use_v to_o check_v ourselves_o and_o ask_v the_o question_n and_o pause_v a_o little_a whether_o we_o know_v it_o to_o be_v true_a or_o no._n we_o shall_v love_v not_o only_o to_o speak_v truth_n without_o neighbour_n but_o of_o our_o neighbour_n too_o we_o shall_v look_v upon_o truth_n as_o a_o most_o sacred_a thing_n ever_o to_o be_v inviolable_a and_o to_o be_v the_o main_a if_o not_o the_o only_a perfection_n of_o our_o judgement_n without_o which_o we_o have_v better_o have_v none_o at_o all_o we_o have_v better_o be_v utter_o ignorant_a and_o never_o judge_v at_o all_o than_o do_v it_o erroneous_o for_o by_o that_o mean_v our_o action_n and_o resolution_n be_v determine_v and_o direct_v amiss_o and_o be_v mischievous_o make_v use_n of_o for_o be_v it_o not_o much_o better_a that_o we_o be_v ignorant_a and_o pass_v no_o judgement_n at_o all_o of_o person_n either_o of_o the_o quantity_n or_o quality_n of_o their_o perfection_n and_o imperfection_n than_o by_o be_v mistake_v therein_o sometime_o to_o neglect_v or_o punish_v the_o innocent_a and_o well-deserving_a and_o to_o be_v beneficent_a and_o bestow_v good_a thing_n upon_o those_o that_o ill_o deserve_v and_o make_v ill_a use_n of_o they_o in_o few_o word_n man_n judge_v false_o because_o they_o will_v not_o judge_v true_o or_o be_v not_o please_v therewith_o or_o at_o least_o but_o little_a and_o in_o such_o degree_n only_o that_o it_o be_v not_o effectual_a for_o it_o be_v not_o every_o degree_n of_o love_n to_o the_o truth_n that_o will_v secure_v a_o man_n from_o false_a judgement_n of_o thing_n and_o here_o of_o person_n but_o it_o must_v be_v a_o great_a degree_n of_o love_n thereto_o than_o to_o the_o thing_n which_o at_o any_o particular_a time_n may_v be_v a_o temptation_n to_o the_o contrary_n and_o if_o we_o will_v be_v always_o secure_a we_o must_v have_v a_o strong_a
pride_n or_o ill_a will_n against_o he_o wherefore_o he_o will_v think_v he_o ought_v not_o or_o on_o purpose_n and_o out_o of_o displeasure_n against_o thou_o he_o will_v not_o believe_v what_o take_v no_o notice_n of_o thy_o judgement_n whether_o true_a or_o false_a there_o passion_n be_v more_o move_v with_o and_o they_o more_o attend_v to_o the_o principle_n of_o thy_o judgement_n than_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o the_o reason_n of_o which_o be_v again_o that_o man_n be_v ultimate_a self-lover_n and_o proud_a will_v have_v reason_n to_o love_v themselves_o as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v whence_o they_o be_v more_o apt_a far_o present_o to_o take_v more_o notice_n of_o other_o fault_n than_o their_o own_o and_o consequent_o when_o any_o one_o pass_v judgement_n concern_v they_o more_o present_o to_o look_v at_o the_o fault_n than_o the_o truth_n of_o his_o judgement_n this_o be_v the_o reason_n we_o see_v every_o one_o fly_v present_o in_o the_o face_n of_o the_o guilty_a judger_n and_o ask_v he_o whether_o he_o be_v not_o as_o bad_a and_o least_o of_o all_o bear_v his_o judgement_n or_o censure_n viz._n they_o think_v it_o here_o more_o than_o ordinary_o manifest_a that_o it_o spare_v not_o himself_o 4._o every_o one_o know_v most_o certain_o the_o truth_n of_o his_o judgement_n concern_v himself_o 5._o here_o man_n care_n and_o zeal_n will_v be_v more_o successful_o employ_v certain_o for_o every_o man_n have_v it_o more_o in_o his_o own_o power_n to_o mend_v and_o reform_v what_o he_o observe_v and_o condemn_v in_o himself_o than_o what_o he_o condemn_v in_o they_o they_o seldom_o refrain_v to_o spend_v their_o censure_n very_o free_o sect._n vii_o 7._o be_v more_o cautious_a and_o spare_v in_o sometime_o pass_v sometime_o declare_v thy_o judgement_n in_o these_o follow_a case_n 1._o concern_v thy_o superior_n especial_o on_o the_o worst_a side_n and_o that_o because_o 1._o as_o to_o their_o principle_n they_o be_v far_o from_o our_o observation_n and_o there_o be_v few_o or_o very_o uncertain_a sign_n thereof_o for_o the_o most_o part_n our_o judgement_n here_o will_v be_v very_o uncertain_a and_o 2._o as_o to_o their_o actual_a prudence_n and_o foresight_n in_o matter_n concern_v their_o office_n it_o be_v for_o the_o same_o reason_n to_o we_o uncertain_a but_o yet_o far_o more_o likely_a to_o compare_v it_o with_o that_o of_o their_o inferior_n or_o other_o private_a person_n to_o be_v more_o and_o better_a than_o what_o be_v in_o they_o for_o they_o make_v it_o more_o their_o business_n to_o attend_v to_o what_o be_v most_o for_o the_o general_a good_a of_o those_o who_o be_v under_o their_o care_n when_o inferior_n look_v only_o or_o principal_o at_o themselves_o and_o then_o they_o general_o have_v better_a information_n what_o be_v so_o and_o true_o it_o seem_v likely_a that_o if_o there_o be_v as_o much_o assurance_n of_o the_o integrity_n of_o governor_n or_o their_o sincere_a love_n to_o the_o public_a good_a as_o there_o be_v of_o their_o knowledge_n the_o judgement_n of_o wise_a and_o honest_a man_n will_v general_o with_o reason_n be_v for_o their_o honour_n and_o advantage_n though_o with_o rash_a and_o that_o they_o may_v clear_o apprehend_v virtue_n and_o vice_n which_o ofttimes_o we_o better_o see_v in_o other_o than_o in_o ourselves_o what_o be_v usual_o signify_v by_o the_o proverb_n that_o thing_n and_o that_o be_v their_o only_a reason_n to_o mind_v principal_o themselves_o and_o thing_n appertain_v to_o they_o and_o it_o may_v be_v the_o same_o thing_n too_o for_o the_o most_o part_n to_o live_v in_o a_o round_a not_o always_o but_o so_o much_o as_o be_v for_o most_o man_n most_o expedient_a and_o then_o when_o man_n do_v observe_v or_o take_v notice_n of_o other_o person_n quality_n and_o action_n they_o will_v be_v pass_v judgement_n because_o there_o be_v more_o of_o action_n than_o in_o suspend_v doubt_v or_o mere_o observe_v that_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o slow_a dull_a thing_n too_o in_o compare_n with_o a_o man_n brisk_o and_o smart_o and_o uninterrupted_o passing_a judgement_n
the_o like_a nature_n those_o mischief_n of_o do_v contrary_a to_o our_o duty_n and_o the_o advantage_n and_o good_a effect_n of_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o in_o this_o particular_a of_o our_o now_o more_o especial_o when_o the_o deceit_n and_o cozenage_n be_v discover_v and_o both_o on_o this_o and_o the_o two_o follow_v as_o well_o as_o other_o account_n it_o be_v a_o special_a maxim_n of_o wisdom_n not_o to_o trust_v those_o judgement_n where_o passion_n have_v go_v before_o reason_n but_o do_v one_o of_o these_o three_o thing_n either_o 1._o be_v calm_a and_o and_o have_v no_o passion_n at_o all_o or_o 2._o if_o thou_o will_v for_o invention-sake_n have_v any_o then_o passionate_a thyself_o equal_o on_o both_o side_n or_o 3._o raise_v up_o in_o thyself_o a_o great_a and_o command_a passion_n for_o truth_n which_o will_v make_v all_o the_o evidence_n and_o proof_n thou_o have_v in_o thy_o keep_n appear_v equal_o on_o all_o side_n but_o here_o i_o may_v prevent_v what_o true_a on_o one_o side_n and_o keep_v back_o what_o be_v so_o on_o the_o other_o but_o also_o by_o thrust_v into_o they_o more_o than_o be_v true_a and_o therefore_o we_o observe_v in_o our_o friend_n and_o in_o our_o enemy_n that_o be_v to_o who_o we_o be_v so_o more_o virtue_n or_o fault_n fine_a or_o foul_a thing_n and_o more_o of_o they_o too_o than_o any_o body_n else_o not_o alike_o prejudice_v can_v see_v or_o than_o indeed_o there_o be_v and_o 3._o when_o thing_n on_o both_o side_n do_v come_v to_o our_o mind_n as_o especial_o when_o suggest_v by_o another_o who_o will_v hatred_n and_o anger_n against_o any_o thing_n or_o person_n will_v not_o attend_v to_o what_o can_v be_v say_v or_o propose_v in_o their_o commendation_n or_o defence_n nor_o will_v nor_o can_v good_a opinion_n and_o favour_n nay_o partial_a and_o imprudent_a charity_n itself_o may_v be_v the_o cause_n as_o when_o a_o man_n have_v no_o self-end_n more_o than_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o action_n in_o give_v his_o judgement_n concern_v a_o person_n to_o who_o he_o have_v a_o strong_a inclination_n to_o do_v good_a but_o without_o that_o due_a actual_a heed_n to_o or_o foresight_n of_o the_o hurt_a or_o evil_a that_o may_v come_v of_o this_o his_o beneficence_n to_o he_o or_o to_o other_o elsewhere_o or_o at_o some_o other_o time_n that_o be_v partial_o or_o imprudent_o judge_v he_o more_o deserve_v than_o in_o truth_n he_o be_v to_o give_v particular_a instance_n of_o false_a judgement_n from_o these_o cause_n will_v be_v endless_a only_o one_o may_v be_v observe_v for_o ostentation_n envy_n which_o be_v several_a branch_n of_o pride_n and_o this_o we_o see_v not_o only_o among_o the_o vulgar_a and_o in_o ordinary_a conversation_n but_o among_o the_o learned_a who_o often_o when_o any_o author_n be_v general_o commend_v and_o it_o may_v be_v too_o much_o set_v themselves_o to_o multiply_v and_o magnify_v his_o fault_n and_o defect_n but_o to_o diminish_v his_o commendable_a quality_n by_o conceal_v or_o extenuate_v they_o and_o on_o the_o contrary_a when_o a_o author_n be_v now_o outdo_v and_o think_v to_o be_v much_o exceed_v by_o another_o and_o therefore_o comparative_o undervalue_v they_o endeavour_v to_o multiply_v and_o magnify_v what_o be_v good_a and_o deserve_a in_o he_o but_o to_o neglect_v conceal_v or_o lessen_v what_o be_v bad_a and_o defective_a and_o consequent_o by_o this_o unobserved_a prejudice_n they_o give_v false_a judgement_n concern_v they_o i_o know_v these_o instance_n may_v proceed_v from_o a_o careful_a veracity_n and_o justice_n because_o man_n common_o both_o praise_n and_o dispraise_v excessive_o and_o their_o judgement_n may_v be_v true_a but_o

undervalue_n nay_o hate_v a_o person_n more_o than_o he_o deserve_v whence_o 3._o it_o beget_v suspicion_n and_o belief_n in_o other_o that_o this_o his_o judgement_n come_v from_o the_o worst_a principle_n of_o self-love_n hatred_n revenge_n pride_n envy_n contempt_n etc._n etc._n when_o it_o real_o may_v not_o be_v so_o whence_o 4._o it_o dispose_v and_o give_v occasion_n and_o be_v but_o too_o often_o a_o effectual_a temptation_n both_o in_o those_o who_o he_o thus_o judge_v and_o other_o to_o contempt_n hatred_n and_o revenge_n towards_o he_o and_o that_o by_o observe_v and_o mark_v make_v know_v and_o publish_v his_o fault_n and_o infirmity_n too_o which_o real_o be_v so_o which_o otherwise_o they_o neither_o will_v nor_o shall_v have_v do_v nay_o by_o add_v thereto_o increase_v their_o number_n and_o greatness_n and_o judge_v he_o worse_o than_o he_o be_v as_o the_o former_a have_v do_v by_o his_o neighbour_n whence_o further_a hatred_n and_o contempt_n reciprocal_o from_o they_o to_o he_o and_o more_o than_o he_o deserve_v too_o hence_o again_o it_o may_v be_v hatred_n and_o revenge_n stir_v up_o in_o he_o again_o against_o they_o so_o that_o now_o behold_v what_o a_o that_o be_v good_a in_o ourselves_o sect._n vii_o and_o thus_o we_o have_v run_v through_o some_o of_o the_o most_o considerable_a mischievous_a effect_n and_o consequence_n of_o these_o prohibit_v judgement_n by_o our_o saviour_n the_o avoid_n of_o all_o which_o ought_v to_o be_v so_o many_o motive_n to_o the_o practise_v of_o this_o negative_a duty_n nor_o ought_v the_o contrary_a good_a effect_n of_o abstain_v therefrom_o to_o do_v less_o viz._n the_o mind_v our_o own_o affair_n the_o employ_v ourselves_o about_o our_o own_o business_n the_o keep_n at_o home_n and_o apply_v neighbour_n fail_v in_o his_o prudence_n or_o power_n in_o a_o matter_n of_o more_o considerable_a moment_n to_o he_o than_o our_o time_n be_v to_o ourselves_o or_o other_o then_o indeed_o not_o to_o be_v too_o intent_n to_o our_o own_o business_n and_o through_o surliness_n or_o carelessness_n of_o our_o neighbour_n concern_v to_o refuse_v or_o not_o to_o mind_n but_o to_o knock_v off_o a_o little_a from_o our_o own_o business_n and_o lend_v a_o helping-hand_n like_v as_o all_o man_n be_v so_o good_a nature_a as_o to_o leave_v their_o shop_n and_o trade_n or_o employment_n a_o while_n to_o quench_v a_o fire_n in_o another_o man_n house_n though_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o danger_n to_o themselves_o or_o to_o give_v a_o lift_v to_o their_o neighbour_n horse_n or_o ass_n but_o from_o a_o disadvantageous_a false_a judgement_n and_o a_o unreasonable_a contempt_n undervalue_v nay_o it_o may_v be_v hatred_n of_o person_n to_o which_o that_o dispose_v we_o however_o from_o a_o be_v suspect_v guilty_a of_o the_o worst_a of_o principle_n of_o our_o judgement_n and_o consequent_o from_o give_v occasion_n and_o temptation_n to_o other_o of_o dislike_n hatred_n contempt_n anger_n or_o revenge_n against_o we_o and_o that_o by_o a_o unreasonable_a severity_n in_o their_o judge_n of_o we_o observe_v and_o proclaim_v of_o our_o fault_n and_o infirmity_n nay_o and_o more_o and_o great_a than_o we_o be_v ever_o so_o unhappy_a as_o to_o be_v guilty_a of_o or_o overtake_v with_o which_o otherwise_o they_o will_v have_v take_v no_o notice_n of_o conceal_v neighbourly_a or_o mutual_a goodwill_n and_o beneficence_n of_o each_o other_o again_o the_o prevention_n of_o foolish_a blind_a unreasonable_a precipitate_a and_o rash_a judgement_n the_o preservation_n of_o the_o credit_n of_o our_o testimony_n and_o put_v ourselves_o thereby_o in_o a_o capacity_n of_o sometime_o to_o the_o ease_n and_o conveniency_n of_o our_o neighbour_n determine_v or_o assist_v to_o determine_v the_o controversy_n or_o difference_n between_o they_o the_o preservation_n at_o least_o of_o the_o credit_n and_o opinion_n of_o our_o unprejudiced_a charity_n and_o care_n of_o our_o further_o still_o the_o prevention_n of_o discredit_v and_o disreputation_n to_o ourselves_o for_o our_o carelessness_n inability_n or_o weakness_n to_o judge_n or_o for_o our_o wilful_a of_o any_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n for_o who_o can_v judge_n and_o say_v that_o he_o know_v not_o if_o he_o be_v ignorant_a and_o have_v no_o probability_n more_o on_o one_o than_o other_o side_n
