impute_a righteousness_n four_o the_o law_n threaten_v judgement_n without_o mercy_n and_o therefore_o 4_o be_v call_v â—_o the_o ministry_n of_o condemnation_n and_o of_o death_n but_o the_o gospel_n show_v mercy_n to_o man_n sin_n in_o and_o by_o christ_n if_o we_o repent_v and_o believe_v last_o the_o law_n promise_v life_n to_o the_o worker_n and_o doer_n of_o it_o 5._o do_v this_o and_o thou_o shall_v live_v but_o the_o gospel_n offer_v salvation_n to_o 5_o he_o that_o work_v not_o 5._o but_o believe_v in_o he_o that_o justify_v the_o ungodly_a not_o consider_v faith_n as_o a_o work_n but_o gospel_n they_o say_v for_o their_o defence_n that_o the_o precept_n of_o both_o be_v the_o same_o 3._o for_o substance_n that_o both_o require_v righteousness_n both_o promise_n life_n and_o threaten_v death_n both_o command_n faith_n repentance_n and_o obedience_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v the_o same_o answer_n first_o the_o law_n and_o precept_n of_o 1_o precept_n the_o law_n and_o gospel_n be_v not_o the_o same_o for_o adam_n in_o his_o innocence_n know_v the_o law_n but_o he_o know_v nothing_o then_o of_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o though_o both_o require_v righteousness_n promise_v life_n and_o threaten_v death_n yet_o the_o manner_n be_v far_o different_a as_o before_o be_v note_v so_o likewise_o they_o differ_v in_o the_o command_v of_o faith_n for_o the_o gospel_n command_v faith_n not_o as_o a_o work_n do_v as_o the_o law_n do_v but_o as_o a_o instrument_n lay_v hold_n on_o christ._n again_o the_o law_n command_v faith_n general_o 2_o as_o to_o believe_v in_o god_n and_o to_o believe_v his_o word_n to_o be_v true_a but_o beside_o this_o the_o gospel_n require_v a_o particular_a faith_n in_o christ_n the_o redeemer_n who_o the_o law_n never_o know_v three_o a_o interpretation_n of_o moses_n law_n or_o prediction_n of_o the_o state_n of_o the_o church_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n again_o by_o destroy_v the_o law_n we_o must_v not_o understand_v a_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n such_o as_o be_v make_v by_o man_n sin_n but_o such_o a_o dissolution_n as_o take_v from_o it_o all_o virtue_n and_o power_n whereby_o it_o be_v a_o law_n and_o so_o to_o far_o different_a in_o degree_n as_o some_o man_n be_v drown_v in_o the_o channel_n and_o middle_n of_o the_o sea_n some_o by_o the_o shore_n side_n which_o place_n differ_v in_o depth_n and_o danger_n though_o all_o be_v one_o in_o regard_n of_o death_n some_o man_n endure_v damnation_n in_o deep_a measure_n some_o in_o lesser_a yet_o both_o be_v condemn_v but_o the_o papist_n abuse_v damn_v the_o soul_n though_o great_a sin_n do_v more_o deep_o wound_v the_o conscience_n and_o plunge_v the_o same_o into_o hell_n small_a and_o great_a sin_n both_o destroy_v the_o soul_n though_o in_o a_o different_a degree_n the_o very_a mote_n be_v deadly_a sin_n though_o in_o nature_n the_o beam_n be_v more_o mortal_a this_o distinction_n they_o borrow_v from_o former_a age_n but_o abuse_v the_o primitive_a church_n from_o whence_o they_o have_v it_o for_o the_o ancient_a father_n call_v some_o sin_n venial_a not_o because_o they_o venial_a deserve_v not_o death_n but_o because_o they_o be_v pardonable_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o censure_n of_o the_o church_n and_o do_v not_o incur_v the_o censure_n of_o excommunication_n and_o those_o they_o call_v mortal_a or_o criminal_a sin_n rash_o of_o david_n fact_n 3._o and_o their_o intent_n be_v to_o corrupt_v the_o honest_a mind_n of_o david_n persuade_v the_o king_n that_o david_n and_o his_o servant_n have_v a_o other_o intent_n brother_n and_o take_v heed_n how_o we_o deal_v about_o the_o eye_n that_o be_v with_o his_o intent_n and_o meaning_n that_o we_o must_v leave_v to_o god_n who_o only_o know_v the_o heart_n and_o for_o his_o action_n &_o speech_n if_o it_o may_v be_v we_o must_v always_o expound_v they_o in_o the_o better_a part_n if_o we_o can_v defend_v a_o man_n do_v yet_o we_o must_v excuse_v his_o meaning_n if_o we_o can_v excuse_v his_o intent_n yet_o we_o must_v think_v the_o best_a of_o his_o conscience_n if_o we_o can_v excuse_v his_o conscience_n yet_o we_o must_v judge_v it_o to_o be_v but_o a_o sin_n of_o ignorance_n if_o we_o can_v so_o do_v yet_o we_o must_v think_v that_o it_o be_v do_v in_o some_o grievous_a temptation_n and_o that_o if_o we_o ourselves_o have_v be_v in_o
