high_a account_n and_o prefer_v he_o above_o themselves_o by_o many_o degree_n now_o see_v the_o guise_n of_o this_o man_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o this_o man_n fall_v in_o love_n with_o himself_o and_o be_v lift_v up_o into_o a_o fool_n paradise_n and_o he_o begin_v to_o admire_v at_o himself_o and_o for_o any_o matter_n of_o faith_n he_o do_v not_o question_v it_o what_o a_o man_n of_o such_o wisdom_n and_o such_o understanding_n what_o not_o he_o faith_n he_o make_v no_o question_n he_o can_v miss_v of_o faith_n and_o so_o he_o go_v away_o comfortable_o and_o content_o thus_o you_o see_v in_o his_o book_n and_o in_o his_o judgement_n and_o go_v no_o further_o and_o it_o be_v far_o from_o save_v faith_n therefore_o that_o the_o indictment_n may_v lie_v clear_a and_o that_o we_o may_v there_o be_v also_o a_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n upon_o the_o affection_n and_o then_o there_o come_v a_o application_n wherein_o the_o soul_n go_v out_o to_o the_o promise_n and_o take_v that_o for_o his_o good_a which_o be_v thereunto_o appoint_v now_o observe_v this_o judicious_a man_n he_o have_v a_o general_a apprehension_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o as_o for_o to_o partake_v of_o they_o himself_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o wise_a man_n that_o come_v to_o inquire_v for_o christ_n

settle_v thereof_o to_o thy_o soul_n so_o that_o the_o evidence_n of_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n do_v not_o come_v powerful_o in_o upon_o thy_o heart_n but_o there_o be_v some_o guilt_n of_o sin_n still_o remain_v and_o conscience_n still_o begin_v to_o accuse_v thou_o and_o condemn_v thou_o the_o truth_n be_v though_o reason_n be_v inform_v yet_o haply_o conscience_n will_v breed_v new_a they_o be_v not_o infidel_n they_o assent_n unto_o the_o truth_n and_o yield_v unto_o it_o in_o their_o judgement_n they_o think_v this_o be_v faith_n and_o that_o it_o be_v sufficient_a too_o oh_o you_o poor_a creature_n that_o have_v your_o friend_n or_o parent_n or_o husband_n that_o thus_o lie_v hold_v upon_o christ_n and_o be_v persuade_v that_o this_o be_v faith_n understand_v what_o the_o meaning_n be_v they_o only_o assent_v to_o the_o truth_n but_o never_o make_v application_n to_o their_o own_o soul_n what_o be_v that_o to_o thou_o that_o thou_o know_v the_o way_n to_o life_n and_o salvation_n and_o never_o walk_v in_o it_o and_o what_o be_v that_o to_o thou_o to_o hear_v that_o the_o lord_n christ_n come_v to_o save_v sinner_n and_o to_o know_v that_o there_o be_v mercy_n enough_o in_o he_o and_o yet_o never_o partake_v of_o it_o three_o i_o come_v to_o the_o evidence_n which_o make_v it_o clear_a to_o we_o that_o he_o have_v no_o more_o than_o this_o and_o those_o evidence_n be_v two_o first_o you_o shall_v find_v this_o man_n past_o fear_n and_o almost_o careless_a but_o he_o be_v without_o doubt_n of_o the_o difficulty_n either_o of_o get_v or_o maintain_v his_o faith_n he_o never_o come_v to_o question_v whether_o he_o have_v faith_n or_o no_o and_o he_o account_v they_o silly_a christian_n that_o be_v so_o daily_o trouble_v and_o disquiet_v for_o their_o estate_n whereas_o he_o carry_v the_o matter_n very_o confident_o and_o scarce_o look_v after_o it_o but_o bear_v it_o out_o with_o marvellous_a boldness_n and_o confidence_n which_o in_o truth_n be_v a_o undoubted_a argument_n that_o this_o man_n never_o know_v what_o this_o faith_n be_v our_o saviour_n say_v strive_v to_o enter_v in_o at_o the_o straight_a gate_n for_o the_o gate_n be_v narrow_a that_o lead_v to_o life_n and_o few_o there_o be_v that_o find_v it_o and_o so_o the_o apostle_n 2_o pet._n 1.5_o give_v all_o diligence_n to_o make_v your_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a yet_o this_o man_n make_v it_o a_o matter_n of_o nothing_o nay_o when_o many_o seek_v and_o labour_v and_o take_v much_o pain_n and_o never_o attain_v it_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o former_a strength_n of_o it_o as_o prov._n 1.28_o they_o shall_v call_v upon_o i_o but_o i_o will_v not_o answer_v they_o shall_v seek_v i_o early_o but_o they_o shall_v not_o find_v i_o yet_o this_o man_n think_v to_o have_v it_o with_o a_o wet_a finger_n that_o faith_n which_o be_v wrought_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o be_v thereby_o keep_v it_o have_v daily_a opposition_n in_o the_o soul_n so_o that_o every_o godly_a man_n that_o have_v faith_n he_o must_v fight_v against_o the_o devil_n and_o all_o enemy_n and_o opposition_n yet_o this_o man_n never_o come_v to_o blow_n the_o lord_n christ_n find_v it_o thus_o by_o experience_n and_o thus_o the_o apostle_n and_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n find_v it_o yet_o this_o man_n have_v find_v out_o a_o short_a cut_n and_o a_o easy_a way_n to_o heaven_n and_o he_o be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o confess_v it_o and_o say_v if_o a_o man_n be_v exercise_v in_o the_o word_n and_o if_o man_n have_v but_o his_o skill_n and_o be_v but_o train_v up_o in_o his_o school_n it_o be_v not_o such_o a_o hard_a matter_n to_o get_v faith_n and_o so_o it_o be_v true_a for_o they_o may_v easy_o get_v that_o faith_n which_o thou_o have_v second_o follow_v this_o man_n home_o and_o close_o with_o he_o in_o his_o private_a chamber_n and_o attend_v upon_o he_o in_o his_o other_o occasion_n and_o there_o he_o have_v no_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o his_o life_n he_o have_v practice_n without_o any_o pith_n and_o a_o course_n without_o any_o kernel_n and_o he_o perform_v superficial_a duty_n without_o any_o strength_n all_o his_o duty_n be_v as_o dry_a as_o a_o chip_n only_o he_o carry_v all_o out_o with_o this_o he_o be_v wise_a and_o learned_a and_o judicious_a and_o this_o answer_v all_o if_o he_o do_v omit_v or_o neglect_v duty_n and_o do_v they_o careless_o this_o comfort_v he_o that_o he_o be_v a_o judicious_a man_n it_o be_v certain_a this_o man_n want_v that_o grace_n which_o he_o seem_v to_o have_v he_o that_o have_v so_o much_o faith_n without_o waver_v must_v needs_o have_v his_o conversation_n answerable_a he_o that_o have_v so_o much_o faith_n in_o
do_v this_o though_o they_o can_v do_v nothing_o else_o they_o can_v pray_v they_o can_v understand_v they_o can_v remember_v they_o can_v subdue_v their_o corruption_n but_o they_o shall_v be_v take_v away_o with_o company_n and_o fall_v into_o that_o sin_n but_o they_o can_v believe_v in_o christ_n with_o all_o their_o heart_n thus_o we_o see_v that_o every_o man_n think_v it_o in_o his_o power_n and_o within_o the_o compass_n of_o his_o ability_n natural_o to_o rest_v upon_o christ_n now_o mark_v what_o follow_v why_o shall_v a_o man_n desire_v that_o he_o have_v why_o shall_v he_o seek_v for_o that_o he_o have_v attain_v why_o shall_v he_o labour_v to_o be_v possess_v of_o that_o which_o be_v in_o his_o own_o power_n and_o he_o be_v possess_v of_o already_o if_o i_o can_v believe_v natural_o if_o it_o be_v in_o my_o power_n to_o go_v to_o christ_n when_o i_o listen_v why_o shall_v i_o use_v all_o mean_n and_o receive_v ability_n to_o do_v that_o which_o i_o can_v do_v by_o my_o own_o power_n and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v one_o main_a ground_n why_o the_o endeavour_n of_o man_n be_v take_v off_o from_o attend_v and_o why_o the_o labour_n of_o christian_n be_v take_v off_o from_o seek_v often_o this_o bless_a precious_a grace_n of_o faith_n there_o be_v many_o ground_n why_o man_n be_v drive_v to_o this_o kind_n of_o conceit_n there_o be_v many_o reason_n that_o make_v way_n for_o this_o conceit_n as_o first_o to_o believe_v be_v a_o spiritual_a thing_n between_o god_n and_o thy_o own_o soul_n to_o pray_v and_o reform_v belong_v to_o the_o outward_a practice_n but_o to_o believe_v be_v a_o closure_n of_o the_o heart_n with_o a_o entertain_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o truth_n and_o the_o give_a way_n of_o our_o soul_n thereunto_o now_o because_o man_n can_v see_v their_o faith_n therefore_o no_o man_n will_v yield_v but_o he_o do_v believe_v second_o man_n conceive_v that_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o take_v of_o mercy_n from_o christ_n and_o say_v they_o be_v there_o any_o man_n that_o will_v not_o have_v mercy_n be_v it_o such_o a_o hard_a matter_n to_o receive_v favour_n offer_v or_o to_o take_v a_o gift_n when_o it_o be_v tender_v unto_o we_o three_o these_o do_v apprehend_v that_o the_o assent_v to_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n wherein_o be_v reveal_v the_o riches_n of_o god_n mercy_n be_v all_o that_o be_v require_v in_o faith_n when_o the_o lord_n say_v he_o have_v send_v his_o son_n into_o the_o world_n that_o he_o have_v prepare_v salvation_n in_o he_o and_o wrougt_v redemption_n through_o he_o they_o acknowledge_v and_o assent_v to_o the_o truth_n and_o conceive_v this_o be_v whole_a to_o believe_v upon_o this_o ground_n poor_a creature_n think_v it_o be_v in_o their_o power_n to_o believe_v and_o take_v grace_n and_o help_v from_o christ_n though_o they_o can_v help_v themselves_o therefore_o they_o labour_v not_o to_o get_v grace_n from_o god_n to_o do_v this_o work_n because_o they_o think_v they_o can_v perform_v this_o work_n by_o their_o own_o ability_n and_o power_n the_o cure_n of_o this_o hindrance_n be_v this_o and_o it_o lie_v special_o in_o these_o three_o meditation_n first_o see_v thyself_o and_o convince_v thy_o own_o heart_n how_o thou_o be_v cozen_v and_o thy_o conscience_n how_o thou_o be_v deceive_v in_o common_a sense_n when_o such_o thought_n creep_v into_o thy_o mind_n and_o reason_n thus_o be_v it_o in_o my_o power_n alone_o to_o believe_v or_o in_o any_o man_n power_n else_o will_v any_o man_n go_v to_o hell_n for_o want_n of_o believe_v if_o it_o be_v in_o my_o power_n or_o any_o man_n power_n else_o to_o get_v faith_n will_v any_o man_n perish_v for_o want_v of_o faith_n take_v a_o little_a experience_n from_o those_o that_o lie_v on_o their_o death_n bed_n a_o riotous_a wretch_n that_o have_v run_v headlong_o against_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o truth_n a_o man_n that_o have_v live_v stubborn_o and_o stout_o under_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n and_o have_v take_v up_o arm_n against_o god_n and_o his_o grace_n he_o lie_v gasp_v and_o then_o he_o look_v to_o heaven_n and_o consider_v what_o shall_v become_v of_o he_o the_o minister_n say_v he_o must_v renounce_v himself_o and_o apply_v christ_n and_o his_o promise_n to_o his_o soul_n oh_o say_v he_o i_o can_v believe_v the_o lord_n will_v save_v i_o and_o pardon_v i_o and_o comfort_v i_o i_o can_v rest_v upon_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n what_o i_o such_o a_o sinner_n and_o save_v what_o i_o such_o a_o sinner_n and_o comfort_v i_o can_v believe_v it_o if_o all_o the_o angel_n in_o heaven_n tell_v it_o i_o be_v it_o in_o this_o man_n power_n to_o believe_v now_o when_o he_o see_v hell_n open_a before_o he_o and_o the_o devil_n ready_a to_o receive_v he_o do_v you_o think_v he_o will_v rush_v into_o hell_n if_o he_o can_v believe_v and_o escape_v it_o second_o look_v into_o the_o depth_n of_o thy_o own_o heart_n and_o weigh_v serious_o thou_o own_o weakness_n by_o the_o balance_n of_o the_o sanctuary_n and_o thy_o own_o infirmity_n by_o the_o bless_a word_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o see_v that_o thou_o must_v not_o only_o have_v a_o gift_n from_o god_n to_o take_v it_o god_n must_v not_o only_o give_v a_o man_n a_o gift_n but_o power_n to_o receive_v it_o joh._n 3.27_o no_o man_n can_v receive_v any_o thing_n unless_o it_o be_v give_v he_o dream_v it_o be_v not_o in_o our_o will_n to_o dispose_v of_o our_o heart_n to_o take_v christ_n when_o we_o will_v to_o let_v he_o stand_v at_o door_n so_o long_o as_o we_o see_v fit_a and_o take_v he_o in_o when_o we_o see_v fit_a but_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n that_o must_v beget_v we_o and_o not_o our_o will_n that_o can_v beget_v ourselves_o therefore_o that_o faith_n that_o grow_v upon_o the_o ground_n of_o thy_o own_o natural_a ability_n it_o be_v a_o fancy_n it_o be_v no_o sound_a faith_n god_n must_v come_v down_o from_o heaven_n to_o thy_o soul_n before_o thou_o can_v go_v up_o to_o heaven_n again_o faith_n must_v be_v first_o wrought_v in_o thy_o soul_n before_o thou_o can_v be_v carry_v to_o god_n by_o faith_n there_o must_v be_v a_o power_n in_o all_o mean_n above_o all_o mean_n there_o must_v be_v a_o spirit_n in_o all_o endeavour_n above_o all_o endeavour_n to_o help_v we_o to_o believe_v or_o else_o we_o shall_v never_o believe_v while_o the_o world_n stand_v therefore_o avoid_v those_o proud_a imagination_n of_o heart_n when_o man_n think_v they_o may_v refuse_v grace_n &_o take_v grace_n when_o they_o listen_v shut_v christ_n out_o of_o door_n over_o night_n and_o take_v he_o in_o the_o morning_n it_o be_v against_o sense_n and_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o cross_a and_o contrary_a to_o the_o power_n of_o grace_n no_o go_v secret_o it_o i_o fear_v it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o thus_o we_o have_v these_o carnal_a plea_n which_o our_o mind_n invent_v and_o satan_n suggest_v and_o we_o judge_v ourselves_o by_o these_o as_o the_o witness_n that_o shall_v warrant_v our_o estate_n as_o the_o judge_n that_o shall_v determine_v of_o our_o estate_n now_o make_v conscience_n of_o judge_v thy_o estate_n in_o this_o manner_n you_o that_o be_v break_v heart_v for_o to_o you_o i_o speak_v this_o kind_n of_o course_n be_v naught_o and_o this_o sin_n be_v more_o heinous_a than_o you_o imagine_v for_o when_o thou_o conclude_v certain_o thy_o estate_n be_v naught_o and_o god_n have_v give_v you_o no_o grace_n upon_o these_o ground_n mark_v against_o how_o many_o commandment_n thou_o sin_v first_o thou_o do_v wrong_v thy_o own_o honour_n that_o god_n have_v put_v upon_o thou_o in_o give_v thou_o grace_n thou_o sin_v also_o against_o the_o three_o commandment_n in_o want_v that_o reverence_n which_o be_v due_a to_o god_n name_n and_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n he_o have_v wrought_v in_o thy_o soul_n thou_o dampest_n thy_o own_o heart_n and_o be_v a_o spiritual_a murderer_n and_o so_o sin_v against_o the_o sixth_o commandment_n thou_o rob_v thyself_o of_o that_o comfort_n of_o heart_n and_o refreshment_n of_o mind_n that_o god_n have_v prepare_v for_o thou_o and_o offer_v unto_o thou_o and_o so_o sin_v against_o the_o eight_o commandment_n nay_o you_o do_v bear_v false_a witness_n infinite_o you_o speak_v against_o yourselves_o to_o the_o overthrow_v of_o your_o soul_n and_o you_o bear_v false_a they_o think_v they_o have_v liberty_n to_o do_v so_o and_o that_o they_o do_v well_o in_o so_o do_v now_o think_v of_o it_o you_o that_o be_v humble_a know_v that_o you_o sin_v fearful_o all_o this_o while_n and_o it_o be_v very_o remarkable_a to_o take_v notice_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o this_o kind_n in_o a_o case_n of_o conscience_n when_o a_o poor_a break_a heart_a sinner_n have_v his_o judgement_n inform_v when_o reason_n be_v plain_a and_o when_o the_o comfort_n be_v clear_o evidence_v when_o scripture_n be_v undeniable_a these_o poor_a creature_n now_o do_v not_o so_o much_o attend_v what_o you_o speak_v and_o what_o the_o minister_n say_v and_o the_o word_n deliver_v but_o all_o their_o care_n be_v how_o they_o may_v answer_v a_o man_n reason_n and_o put_v off_o the_o force_n of_o a_o argument_n and_o they_o count_v it_o a_o matter_n of_o weakness_n if_o they_o can_v answer_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v propound_v to_o they_o for_o their_o comfort_n it_o be_v
