first_o import_v that_o he_o be_v al-sufficient_a of_o himself_o to_o do_v all_o thing_n whatsoever_o need_v no_o help_n nor_o instrument_n beside_o his_o sovereign_a will_n gen._n 17._o 1._o i_o be_o god_n al-sufficient_a second_o that_o he_o have_v a_o sovereign_a right_n and_o title_n to_o all_o thing_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n as_o a_o king_n have_v to_o those_o thing_n which_o belong_v to_o his_o territory_n and_o jurisdiction_n three_o that_o he_o have_v sovereign_a rule_n and_o authority_n over_o all_o thing_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n govern_v they_o as_o he_o please_v and_o bring_v sovereign_a kingdom_n as_o also_o to_o show_v the_o excellency_n of_o it_o first_o this_o appear_v by_o that_o excellent_a order_n which_o god_n have_v set_v in_o all_o his_o work_n by_o their_o creation_n for_o how_o fit_o do_v time_n and_o season_n as_o spring_v time_n and_o summer_n autumn_n and_o winter_n succeed_v one_o a_o other_o how_o sweet_o do_v the_o heavenly_a creature_n the_o sun_n moon_n and_o star_n serve_v for_o the_o creature_n here_o below_o as_o herb_n and_o plant_n how_o do_v these_o serve_v for_o beast_n and_o fowl_n and_o all_o of_o they_o for_o the_o use_n of_o man_n as_o this_o prove_v against_o the_o atheist_n that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n so_o it_o show_v the_o sovereignty_n and_o most_o wise_a regiment_n of_o his_o kingdom_n when_o a_o man_n see_v a_o great_a army_n in_o good_a array_n and_o every_o one_o keep_v his_o place_n and_o stand_v constant_o he_o will_v present_o commend_v the_o wisdom_n and_o authority_n of_o the_o leader_n why_o then_o shall_v we_o not_o acknowledge_v the_o power_n and_o soverangntie_n of_o the_o almighty_a in_o that_o constant_a station_n of_o the_o creature_n in_o that_o sweet_a order_n which_o they_o observe_v from_o the_o creation_n second_o the_o terror_n &_o accusation_n of_o a_o guilty_a conscience_n do_v argue_v 2_o evident_o the_o absolute_a sovereignty_n of_o god_n kingdom_n for_o when_o a_o man_n have_v commit_v some_o grievous_a sin_n either_o against_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n or_o the_o write_a word_n of_o god_n though_o it_o be_v so_o secret_o that_o no_o man_n know_v of_o it_o yet_o will_v his_o conscience_n accuse_v and_o fright_v he_o which_o it_o will_v not_o do_v unless_o he_o be_v to_o answer_v for_o that_o fact_n to_o god_n the_o sovereign_a lord_n of_o al._n three_o man_n of_o death_n that_o be_v such_o as_o by_o some_o notorious_a crime_n deserve_v 3_o death_n though_o through_o the_o ignorance_n or_o negligence_n of_o magistrate_n they_o be_v let_v to_o escape_v yet_o ordinary_o they_o be_v overtake_v with_o some_o fearful_a judgement_n and_o one_o way_n or_o other_o meet_v with_o their_o desert_n which_o be_v a_o special_a work_n of_o god_n sovereign_a providence_n four_o the_o gospel_n preach_v be_v as_o contrary_a to_o man_n corrupt_a nature_n 4_o as_o fire_n be_v to_o water_n and_o yet_o have_v it_o in_o all_o age_n win_v man_n unto_o it_o to_o profess_v it_o and_o to_o love_v it_o so_o as_o they_o have_v be_v content_a for_o the_o gospel_n sake_n to_o forsake_v house_n and_o land_n wife_n &_o child_n yea_o and_o life_n itself_o this_o no_o word_n of_o man_n can_v ever_o do_v &_o therefore_o it_o argue_v plain_o that_o some_o supernatural_a power_n work_v with_o it_o which_o draw_v the_o heart_n of_o man_n unto_o it_o here_o some_o may_v say_v that_o the_o devil_n have_v a_o kingdom_n contrary_n to_o god_n kingdom_n wherein_o he_o reign_v and_o therefore_o god_n kingdom_n be_v not_o absolute_a ans._n if_o we_o regard_v the_o malice_n of_o satan_n or_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o wicked_a it_o may_v seem_v god_n kingdom_n shall_v not_o be_v absolute_a because_o they_o continual_o rebel_v against_o his_o reveal_v will_v but_o of_o a_o thing_n be_v the_o effect_n and_o do_v of_o it_o it_o be_v not_o so_o in_o we_o for_o we_o will_v many_o thing_n which_o we_o can_v do_v but_o whatsoever_o god_n will_v that_o he_o do_v and_o that_o which_o he_o can_v do_v he_o can_v will_n the_o scripture_n say_v god_n can_v lie_v nor_o deny_v himself_o nor_o die_v etc._n etc._n now_o as_o he_o can_v do_v these_o thing_n so_o neither_o can_v he_o will_v they_o for_o they_o be_v no_o work_n of_o power_n but_o of_o weakness_n and_o frailty_n and_o therefore_o be_v god_n omnipotent_a because_o he_o can_v neither_o do_v nor_o will_v the_o same_o thou_o be_v
fruition_n of_o every_o grace_n and_o blessing_n we_o ask_v of_o god_n according_a to_o his_o will_n amen_n verse_n 14._o for_o if_o you_o do_v forgive_v man_n their_o trespass_n your_o heavenly_a brethren_n for_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n three_o point_n must_v be_v discuss_v forgive_v first_o who_o this_o reason_n do_v concern_v namely_o private_a man_n for_o private_a trespass_n it_o reach_v not_o to_o magistrate_n and_o public_a person_n in_o their_o function_n who_o be_v the_o 〈…〉_z minister_n of_o god_n to_o take_v vengeance_n on_o they_o that_o do_v evil_a for_o to_o such_o the_o lord_n say_v thive_n eye_n shall_v not_o spare_v the_o 19_o offender_n but_o according_a to_o the_o quality_n of_o the_o offence_n must_v he_o execute_v judgement_n upon_o offender_n for_o the_o remove_n of_o evil_n and_o so_o must_v parent_n and_o master_n deal_v in_o their_o family_n and_o minister_n in_o their_o public_a dispensation_n of_o the_o word_n for_o else_o offence_n will_v so_o abound_v that_o there_o can_v be_v no_o live_n for_o god_n people_n in_o the_o world_n ii_o point_n how_o do_v these_o depend_v one_o upon_o a_o other_o our_o forgive_n of_o man_n and_o god_n forgive_a we_o ans._n we_o must_v not_o conceive_v that_o our_o forgive_a man_n their_o trespass_n be_v a_o cause_n why_o god_n forgive_v we_o for_o we_o be_v by_o nature_n dead_a in_o sin_n and_o can_v not_o do_v any_o good_a thing_n of_o ourselves_o till_o we_o be_v enable_v thereunto_o of_o god_n but_o our_o forgive_n be_v a_o sign_n that_o god_n have_v forgive_v we_o be_v indeed_o a_o fruit_n of_o our_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n for_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o true_a repentance_n which_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o faith_n whereby_o we_o apprehend_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n in_o christ._n iii_o point_n how_o shall_v our_o forgiveness_n go_v before_o god_n forgive_a god_n we_o for_o so_o the_o word_n seem_v to_o import_v if_o you_o forgive_v your_o heavenly_a father_n will_v forgive_v you_o etc._n etc._n ans._n the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n which_o god_n give_v must_v be_v consider_v two_o way_n first_o as_o it_o be_v give_v in_o heaven_n second_o as_o it_o be_v reveal_v and_o assure_v to_o the_o conscience_n of_o man_n now_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n in_o heaven_n always_o go_v before_o our_o forgive_a other_o but_o our_o assurance_n of_o pardon_n with_o god_n follow_v after_o our_o forgive_n of_o man_n for_o a_o man_n sin_n may_v be_v forgive_v with_o god_n and_o yet_o he_o may_v long_o remain_v without_o the_o assurance_n thereof_o in_o his_o own_o conscience_n this_o we_o may_v see_v in_o david_n for_o when_o nathan_n say_v 13._o the_o lord_n have_v put_v away_o thy_o sin_n no_o doubt_n it_o be_v forgive_v in_o heaven_n but_o yet_o his_o 51._o â—arnest_a prayer_n for_o pardon_n afterward_o 〈…〉_z wes_z plain_o that_o he_o do_v not_o upon_o nathan_n speech_n receive_v the_o comfortable_a assurance_n of_o pardon_n in_o his_o own_o conscience_n this_o then_o be_v christ_n meaning_n that_o if_o we_o forgive_v man_n their_o trespass_n god_n will_v assure_v we_o in_o our_o conscience_n that_o he_o have_v forgive_v we_o otherwise_o if_o we_o will_v not_o forgive_v god_n will_v deny_v we_o that_o assurance_n the_o use_n of_o this_o point_n be_v first_o and_o chief_o this_o we_o must_v learn_v to_o forgive_v motive_n and_o forget_v all_o private_a wrong_n and_o injury_n do_v unto_o we_o whether_o great_a or_o final_a without_o desire_n of_o revenge_n the_o reason_n to_o move_v we_o hereto_o be_v these_o first_o it_o be_v god_n commandment_n here_o express_o enjoin_v 1_o which_o must_v needs_o bind_v the_o conscience_n to_o obedience_n second_o if_o we_o 2_o will_v not_o forgive_v man_n god_n will_v not_o forgive_v we_o this_o christ_n enforce_v by_o double_v the_o sentence_n now_o without_o god_n forgiveness_n there_o be_v no_o salvation_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v be_v ready_a to_o forgive_v as_o we_o tender_v our_o own_o salvation_n three_o the_o frailty_n of_o our_o nature_n be_v such_o that_o we_o ourselves_o 3_o be_v subject_a to_o offer_v wrong_a to_o other_o this_o be_v intimate_v in_o this_o phrase_n except_o you_o forgive_v man_n their_o trespass_n so_o that_o every_o man_n be_v prone_a to_o trespass_v against_o other_o and_o therefore_o as_o we_o will_v be_v forgive_v when_o we_o trespass_n so_o must_v we_o also_o forgive_v man_n their_o trespass_n now_o for_o the_o better_a perform_v of_o our_o duty_n herein_o these_o rule_n must_v forgive_a be_v go_v together_o for_o here_o by_o this_o one_o branch_n of_o a_o reform_a life_n in_o brotherly_a forgiveness_n be_v understand_v all_o of_o the_o same_o kind_n but_o where_o be_v no_o reformation_n of_o life_n there_o be_v no_o pardon_n of_o sin_n before_o god_n will_v thou_o therefore_o be_v assure_v in_o thy_o conscience_n of_o god_n special_a favour_n towards_o thou_o in_o christ_n then_o be_v not_o subject_a to_o corruption_n nor_o to_o the_o violence_n of_o thief_n and_o robber_n and_o therefore_o our_o treasure_n must_v be_v there_o quest._n why_o vanity_n shall_v the_o high_a heaven_n be_v free_a from_o that_o vanity_n whereto_o all_o creature_n else_o be_v subject_a by_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n answ._n the_o heaven_n above_o which_o we_o look_v upon_o and_o the_o earth_n man_n shall_v make_v it_o subject_a to_o vanity_n or_o corruption_n if_o therefore_o the_o safety_n of_o a_o endure_a substance_n can_v allure_v our_o heart_n to_o love_n and_o like_v then_o let_v we_o set_v ourselves_o for_o this_o heavenly_a treasure_n v_o 21._o for_o where_o your_o treasure_n be_v there_o will_v your_o heart_n be_v also_o this_o verse_n contain_v a_o reason_n of_o the_o former_a commandment_n common_a to_o they_o both_o tend_v to_o persuade_v we_o to_o the_o obedience_n of_o they_o both_o the_o reason_n stand_v thus_o where_o your_o treasure_n be_v there_o will_v your_o heart_n be_v also_o but_o your_o heart_n shall_v not_o be_v on_o earth_n but_o in_o heaven_n therefore_o lay_v not_o up_o treasure_n upon_o earth_n but_o in_o heaven_n the_o exposition_n by_o the_o primitive_a church_n from_o whence_o they_o have_v it_o for_o the_o ancient_a father_n call_v some_o sin_n venial_a not_o because_o they_o venial_a deserve_v not_o death_n but_o because_o they_o be_v pardonable_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o censure_n of_o the_o church_n and_o do_v not_o incur_v the_o censure_n of_o excommunication_n and_o those_o they_o call_v mortal_a or_o criminal_a sin_n meaning_n if_o we_o can_v excuse_v his_o intent_n yet_o we_o must_v think_v the_o best_a of_o his_o conscience_n if_o we_o can_v excuse_v his_o conscience_n yet_o we_o must_v judge_v it_o to_o be_v but_o a_o sin_n of_o ignorance_n if_o we_o can_v so_o do_v yet_o we_o must_v think_v that_o it_o be_v do_v in_o some_o grievous_a temptation_n and_o that_o if_o we_o ourselves_o have_v be_v in_o
