word_n and_o act_n because_o he_o know_v they_o will_v displease_v god_n this_o be_v the_o very_a top_n and_o height_n of_o presumptuous_a sin_v when_o a_o man_n in_o a_o sober_a and_o calm_a spirit_n inclination_n of_o the_o former_a and_o the_o moral_o evil_a disposition_n of_o the_o latter_a be_v chain_v in_o they_o be_v stop_v they_o be_v hinder_v in_o respect_n of_o their_o act_n and_o exercise_n all_o creature_n be_v capable_a of_o restraint_n because_o under_o a_o supreme_a power_n only_a god_n can_v be_v restrain_v but_o for_o all_o creature_n their_o nature_n and_o inclination_n and_o operation_n be_v under_o his_o command_n by_o the_o law_n of_o creation_n 2._o restraint_n of_o any_o agent_n arise_v from_o a_o great_a strength_n agent_n restraint_n of_o any_o agent_n be_v from_o a_o great_a strength_n of_o a_o superior_a agent_n of_o a_o superior_a agent_n whatsoever_o keep_v a_o man_n back_o from_o a_o sinful_a act_n it_o be_v at_o that_o time_n while_o a_o restraint_n of_o more_o actual_o strong_a force_n than_o the_o present_a inclination_n be_v as_o in_o the_o stop_n of_o a_o stone_n or_o water_n that_o which_o be_v unequal_a in_o strength_n a_o lesser_a force_n be_v not_o able_a to_o keep_v in_o the_o strong_a the_o cord_n wherewith_o samson_n be_v bind_v be_v no_o restraint_n to_o his_o motion_n and_o escape_n for_o his_o strength_n exceed_v they_o and_o he_o easy_o break_v they_o asunder_o but_o god_n decree_n and_o providence_n be_v a_o restraint_n to_o the_o rage_a sea_n and_o his_o power_n be_v a_o restraint_n to_o gird_v in_o the_o malice_n and_o rage_n of_o man_n because_o though_o sinful_a inclination_n be_v strong_a yet_o god_n can_v over-rule_v and_o bind_v and_o bound_v it_o in_o 3._o all_o restraint_n presuppose_v a_o aptness_n a_o disposition_n ready_a to_o out_o restraint_n suppose_v a_o readiness_n â—o_o get_v out_o run_v and_o get_v out_o the_o child_n who_o desire_n be_v to_o lie_v in_o the_o best_a have_v their_o infirmity_n and_o escape_n we_o think_v no_o hurt_n and_o god_n know_v our_o heart_n sin_n we_o do_v and_o who_o do_v not_o but_o it_o be_v not_o through_o presumption_n but_o through_o infirmity_n the_o spirit_n be_v ready_a but_o the_o flesh_n be_v weak_a we_o still_o carry_v flesh_n and_o blood_n about_o we_o it_o be_v our_o weakness_n and_o god_n we_o trust_v be_v subtle_a and_o man_n be_v apt_a to_o raise_v themselves_o in_o a_o false_a opinion_n of_o their_o safety_n and_o to_o extenuate_v the_o height_n and_o part_n of_o their_o sin_v but_o to_o the_o objection_n i_o will_v brief_o discover_v unto_o you_o whether_o presumption_n four_o thing_n whether_o our_o sinning_n be_v from_o infirmity_n or_o presumption_n your_o sinning_n fall_v from_o infirmity_n or_o else_o proceed_v from_o presumption_n this_o must_v be_v grant_v in_o the_o general_a 1._o there_o be_v sin_n of_o infirmity_n as_o well_o as_o of_o presumption_n 2._o infirmity_n be_v of_o two_o sort_n 1._o mere_a infirmity_n sin_n arise_v from_o mere_a weakness_n without_o any_o deliberation_n of_o the_o mind_n or_o choice_n of_o the_o will_n as_o sudden_a evil_a thought_n word_n deed_n dulness_n defect_n shortness_n in_o good_a etc._n etc._n 2._o mix_v which_o have_v a_o tange_fw-la of_o presumption_n but_o not_o enough_o to_o make_v the_o sin_n to_o be_v presumptuous_a a_o knowledge_n but_o not_o a_o practical_a judgement_n pro_fw-la hic_fw-la &_o nunc_fw-la some_o apprehension_n but_o not_o a_o perfect_a deliberation_n sudden_a passion_n perplex_v the_o judgement_n and_o dazzle_v of_o it_o inadvertency_n inconsideration_n but_o more_o particular_o 1._o act_n own_v themselves_o to_o infirmity_n depend_v most_o strength_n infirmity_n depend_v most_o upon_o outward_a strength_n upon_o outward_a strength_n they_o have_v not_o such_o a_o entire_a causality_n from_o the_o subject_n but_o be_v produce_v from_o unequal_a power_n it_o be_v grant_v that_o even_o a_o good_a heart_n may_v yet_o be_v find_v in_o the_o dirt_n it_o may_v be_v overtake_v with_o some_o particular_a fact_n which_o be_v stark_o naught_o but_o this_o irregular_a action_n arise_v principal_o from_o a_o strength_n of_o temptation_n which_o exceed_v the_o actual_a strength_n of_o the_o renew_a heart_n like_o a_o man_n in_o a_o crowd_n though_o he_o strive_v another_o way_n yet_o be_v overbear_v he_o be_v overset_a he_o be_v carry_v down_o for_o all_o his_o strength_n can_v shoulder_v off_o the_o crowd_n he_o be_v too_o weak_a so_o when_o a_o man_n sin_n through_o infirmity_n there_o be_v a_o nature_n which_o resist_v as_o paul_n have_v a_o law_n in_o his_o mind_n war_a against_o the_o law_n of_o his_o member_n rom._n 7._o yet_o the_o strength_n of_o that_o sinful_a law_n do_v over-bear_a the_o resist_a strength_n of_o his_o renew_a mind_n in_o respect_n of_o particular_a fact_n &_o therefore_o the_o act_n be_v act_n of_o infirmity_n but_o what_o be_v this_o to_o he_o who_o heart_n be_v set_v on_o wickedness_n who_o imagine_v sinful_a device_n who_o shape_n and_o contrive_v his_o way_n of_o sin_v who_o tempt_v even_o sin_n itself_o to_o sin_n who_o sinning_n arise_v from_o affection_n not_o from_o temptation_n who_o provoke_v his_o corruption_n to_o get_v out_o who_o be_v a_o devil_n to_o his_o own_o heart_n incline_v and_o stir_v it_o to_o sinful_a commission_n be_v our_o sinning_n spring_v from_o a_o full_a principle_n from_o a_o nature_n give_v out_o itself_o and_o that_o alone_a i_o can_v judge_v they_o to_o be_v infirmity_n 2._o act_n of_o infirmity_n be_v not_o habitual_a but_o particular_a they_o particular_a infirmity_n be_v not_o habitual_a but_o particular_a be_v rather_o transient_a then_o permanent_a act_n they_o be_v act_n but_o not_o continue_a act_n like_o a_o land-flood_n not_o like_o a_o river_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o be_v these_o 1._o partly_o because_o they_o spring_v from_o temptation_n which_o though_o note_n it_o may_v now_o and_o then_o overreach_v the_o soul_n yet_o the_o renew_a heart_n observe_v the_o slight_a of_o satan_n and_o the_o imbecility_n of_o itself_o provide_v therefore_o for_o strong_a defence_n and_o strength_n to_o resist_v and_o 2._o partly_o because_o they_o flow_v from_o passion_n and_o sudden_a distemper_n which_o be_v not_o a_o constant_a inclination_n but_o only_o a_o fit_a a_o present_a violence_n david_n in_o a_o sudden_a passion_n will_v kill_v nabal_n and_o every_o mother_n child_n but_o when_o abâ—gail_n meet_v and_o assuage_v he_o and_o make_v he_o understand_v reason_n he_o be_v quit_v from_o his_o project_n but_o now_o where_o thing_n fall_v into_o a_o habit_n into_o a_o course_n into_o a_o common_a practice_n when_o a_o man_n be_v every_o day_n at_o his_o sin_n when_o it_o prove_v a_o haunt_n this_o can_v be_v call_v a_o business_n of_o infirmity_n when_o our_o action_n run_v and_o fall_v into_o a_o kind_n of_o naturalness_n and_o custom_n that_o a_o man_n be_v always_o slipe_v and_o always_o swear_v and_o always_o filch_v and_o always_o lie_v when_o the_o way_n of_o his_o sin_n be_v a_o trade_n why_o this_o be_v no_o more_o to_o be_v repute_v a_o infirmity_n then_o for_o a_o mariner_n to_o be_v in_o his_o ship_n or_o a_o tradesman_n to_o be_v in_o his_o shop_n three_o act_n of_o infirmity_n be_v involuntary_a act_n the_o man_n do_v act_n infirmity_n be_v involuntary_a act_n they_o but_o the_o will_n be_v against_o they_o the_o evil_a which_o i_o will_v not_o do_v that_o do_v i_o say_v paul_n in_o rom._n 7._o as_o the_o fact_n oppose_v the_o law_n so_o that_o will_v oppose_v the_o fact_n it_o be_v that_o which_o a_o man_n judgement_n disapprove_v and_o which_o his_o will_n be_v averse_a from_o the_o traveller_n his_o will_n be_v to_o go_v the_o right_a way_n and_o in_o that_o to_o stand_v yet_o he_o may_v stumble_v and_o fall_v down_o and_o this_o may_v be_v call_v a_o infirmity_n but_o if_o he_o be_v himself_o and_o shall_v put_v off_o his_o clothes_n and_o lay_v himself_o down_o in_o the_o dirt_n this_o be_v a_o act_n of_o a_o voluntary_a madness_n so_o when_o a_o man_n set_v himself_o to_o sin_n when_o he_o will_v go_v and_o wallow_v in_o the_o mire_n when_o with_o ahab_n he_o sell_v himself_o to_o work_v wickedness_n that_o he_o do_v bargain_n away_o his_o soul_n for_o a_o sin_n when_o he_o give_v up_o himself_o to_o uncleanness_n with_o greediness_n this_o be_v no_o infirmity_n it_o be_v a_o height_n of_o proud_a presumption_n but_o through_o infirmity_n of_o prevalent_a resistance_n a_o good_a man_n may_v be_v sell_v under_o sin_n as_o paul_n he_o may_v be_v lead_v captive_a be_v over-surprized_n he_o may_v be_v lead_v with_o peter_n that_o way_n or_o to_o that_o fact_n which_o yet_o he_o will_v not_o willing_o do_v four_o act_n of_o infirmity_n be_v not_o a_o state_n of_o quietness_n or_o consistence_n i_o if_o a_o man_n sin_n from_o a_o weakness_n of_o withstand_v quietness_n infirmity_n be_v not_o a_o state_n of_o quietness_n grace_n though_o the_o
holiness_n as_o a_o man_n may_v be_v a_o traitor_n when_o he_o yet_o do_v seem_v to_o do_v something_o of_o the_o service_n to_o a_o prince_n so_o sin_n may_v be_v a_o man_n lord_n though_o he_o do_v do_v many_o thing_n which_o seem_v good_a herod_n love_v herodias_n though_o he_o hear_v john_n baptist_n and_o do_v many_o thing_n glad_o there_o be_v scarce_o any_o man_n where_o christ_n be_v profess_v that_o be_v so_o universal_o bad_a but_o he_o may_v now_o and_o then_o do_v something_o which_o may_v be_v particular_o good_a at_o least_o material_o consider_v 4._o but_o yet_o fourthly_a the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n can_v consist_v with_o holiness_n but_o it_o can_v consist_v with_o the_o love_n of_o holiness_n the_o love_n of_o holiness_n for_o where_o sin_n be_v in_o dominion_n there_o sin_n have_v the_o love_n of_o the_o soul_n now_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o a_o man_n to_o love_v sin_n and_o to_o love_v holiness_n i_o grant_v it_o that_o many_o thing_n may_v be_v the_o object_n of_o love_n though_o there_o be_v a_o numerical_a variety_n of_o they_o yet_o there_o may_v be_v a_o objective_a unity_n they_o may_v all_o meet_v in_o one_o common_a reason_n and_o natural_a course_n of_o love_n and_o therefore_o may_v be_v love_v but_o then_o opposite_a and_o contradictory_n thing_n can_v be_v both_o love_v at_o once_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o you_o can_v reconcile_v they_o into_o a_o objective_a unity_n that_o which_o be_v a_o reason_n of_o the_o love_n in_o one_o be_v a_o reason_n of_o hatred_n in_o the_o other_o now_o sin_n and_o holiness_n be_v opposite_a they_o be_v at_o the_o great_a distance_n in_o spiritual_a contradiction_n their_o nature_n and_o course_n and_o effect_n all_o be_v opposite_a so_o that_o a_o man_n can_v at_o once_o possible_o love_v they_o both_o and_o therefore_o if_o holiness_n and_o grace_n have_v thy_o love_n very_o sin_n have_v not_o dominion_n i_o must_v not_o insist_v at_o large_a on_o this_o only_o observe_v whether_o thou_o love_v holiness_n preciselie_o and_o pure_o for_o itself_o what_o be_v it_o which_o thou_o esteem_v most_o which_o thou_o desire_v most_o be_v the_o want_n of_o it_o thy_o great_a grief_n be_v the_o prosperity_n of_o it_o either_o in_o thyself_o or_o other_o a_o true_a and_o singular_a joy_n unto_o thou_o at_o what_o pain_n be_v thou_o to_o purchase_v and_o increase_v it_o what_o be_v thy_o thought_n of_o they_o who_o be_v holy_a and_o of_o those_o ministry_n which_o edge_n and_o work_n on_o thy_o heart_n most_o unto_o holiness_n these_o and_o such_o like_a thing_n will_v show_v whither_o thou_o love_v holiness_n which_o if_o thou_o do_v thy_o sin_n be_v not_o thy_o lord_n 4._o who_o law_n do_v thou_o approve_v and_o delight_v in_o according_a in_o who_o law_n do_v thou_o approve_v and_o delight_v in_o as_o a_o man_n lord_n be_v so_o be_v his_o law_n and_o according_a as_o the_o man_n be_v so_o be_v his_o mind_n and_o affection_n towards_o those_o law_n of_o that_o lord_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o when_o sin_n have_v dominion_n there_o sin_n have_v several_a law_n several_a command_n the_o obedience_n of_o which_o be_v delightful_a to_o the_o sinner_n and_o therefore_o such_o a_o one_o be_v say_v to_o fulfil_v the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o to_o commit_v sin_n with_o greediness_n ephes_n 4._o 19_o and_o to_o yield_v himself_o over_o will_v thou_o have_v i_o to_o do_v act._n 9_o 6._o obj._n it_o be_v true_a that_o sinful_a corruption_n yet_o abide_v in_o the_o best_a will_v make_v head_n against_o the_o holy_a command_n of_o
