A29077 Vindiciæ Calvinisticæ: or, some impartial reflections on the Dean of Londondereys considerations that obliged him to come over to the communion of the Church of Rome And Mr. Chancellor King's answer thereto. He no less unjustly than impertinently reflects, on the protestant dissenters. In a letter to friend. By W.B. D.D.; Vindiciæ Calvinisticæ. Boyse, J. method_n it_o be_v capable_a of_o and_o only_o take_v notice_n of_o those_o answer_n wherein_o mr._n k_n either_o judgement_n or_o charity_n seem_v to_o fail_v he_o the_o one_a quest_n propose_v by_o d._n m._n in_o his_o preface_n be_v what_o be_v mean_v by_o the_o catholic_n church_n mr._n k_n answer_n be_v it_o be_v the_o whole_a body_n of_o man_n profess_v the_o religion_n of_o christ_n and_o live_v under_o their_o lawful_a spiritual_a governor_n p._n 4._o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n he_o intend_v this_o for_o the_o description_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n here_o on_o earth_n as_o measure_v by_o a_o judgement_n of_o charity_n and_o comprise_v all_o credible_a professor_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n here_o be_v two_o character_n to_o distinguish_v the_o member_n of_o it_o profess_v the_o religion_n of_o christ_n and_o live_v under_o lawful_a spiritual_a governor_n now_o that_o which_o i_o chief_o dislike_v in_o this_o description_n be_v that_o this_o latter_a mark_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n live_v under_o lawful_a spiritual_a governor_n give_v we_o a_o notion_n of_o it_o not_o only_o very_o obscure_a but_o too_o narrow_a nor_o do_v he_o find_v any_o such_o mark_v assign_v either_o in_o that_o text_n he_o quote_v 4_o eph._n 3_o 4_o 5._o or_o in_o that_o passage_n he_o cite_v out_o of_o st._n augustin_n and_o it_o be_v the_o more_o necessary_a to_o insist_v on_o this_o because_o every_o notion_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n which_o be_v too_o narrow_a be_v so_o far_o schismatical_a for_o it_o cut_v off_o those_o from_o their_o relation_n to_o the_o catholic_n church_n who_o be_v member_n of_o it_o and_o mr._n k._n himself_o do_v afterward_o apply_v it_o to_o that_o ill_a purpose_n that_o this_o notion_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n be_v too_o narrow_a on_o supposition_n mr._n k._n mean_v no_o better_o than_o he_o speak_v be_v hence_o evident_a because_o there_o be_v many_o who_o be_v true_a member_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n who_o live_v under_o no_o pastor_n or_o spiritual_a governor_n at_o all_o nor_o indeed_o have_v the_o opportunity_n to_o do_v so_o what_o do_v he_o think_v of_o many_o christian_n that_o live_v in_o some_o foreign_a plantation_n where_o they_o be_v not_o furnish_v with_o they_o nay_o to_o propose_v a_o instance_n much_o more_o considerable_a what_o do_v mr._n k._n think_v of_o all_o the_o protestant_n who_o be_v yet_o in_o france_n and_o because_o they_o will_v not_o change_v their_o religion_n be_v confine_v to_o galley_n prison_n or_o convent_v be_v all_o these_o by_o the_o banishment_n of_o their_o minister_n exclude_v from_o the_o catholic_n church_n have_v the_o french_a king_n edict_n so_o malignant_a a_o influence_n as_o to_o cut_v they_o off_o from_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n by_o deprive_v they_o of_o their_o lawful_a pastor_n if_o so_o popish_a prince_n have_v a_o very_a formidable_a power_n and_o protestant_n may_v well_o dread_v their_o edict_n upon_o a_o spiritual_a as_o well_o as_o temporal_a account_n more_o than_o all_o the_o thunder_n of_o the_o vatican_n but_o i_o fear_v mr._n k._n will_v scarce_o allow_v the_o reform_a church_n in_o france_n to_o be_v any_o part_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n if_o they_o have_v their_o pastor_n again_o if_o we_o compare_v this_o description_n of_o it_o with_o other_o passage_n in_o his_o answer_n for_o this_o description_n be_v very_o obscure_a and_o if_o i_o conjecture_v right_a mr._n k_n notion_n of_o lawful_a spiritual_a governor_n much_o more_o narrow_a what_o do_v he_o mean_v by_o lawful_a spiritual_a governor_n be_v they_o to_o be_v estimate_v such_o by_o the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n or_o by_o the_o law_n of_o the_o church_n or_o by_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n do_v he_o mean_v such_o spiritual_a governor_n as_o be_v establish_v in_o every_o nation_n by_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n if_o so_o than_o the_o arrian_n bishop_n when_o establish_v by_o the_o emperor_n of_o their_o opinion_n be_v the_o only_a lawful_a pastor_n and_o all_o that_o part_n of_o the_o people_n that_o adhere_v to_o their_o orthodox_n pastor_n cease_v to_o be_v member_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n then_o the_o popish_a clergy_n in_o france_n be_v the_o only_a lawful_a spiritual_a governor_n and_o the_o protestant_n there_o be_v no_o part_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n because_o they_o separate_v from_o they_o and_o shall_v the_o popish_a clergy_n be_v establish_v in_o these_o kingdom_n by_o law_n all_o that_o shall_v adhere_v to_o their_o protestant_a pastor_n even_o those_o who_o mr._n k._n now_o think_v their_o only_a lawful_a one_o will_v cease_v to_o be_v member_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n so_o that_o the_o supreme_a magistrate_n may_v make_v pastor_n lawful_a or_o unlawful_a at_o his_o pleasure_n and_o make_v those_o that_o be_v this_o month_n member_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n cease_v to_o be_v so_o the_o next_o but_o this_o be_v a_o principle_n i_o will_v hope_v fit_a for_o mr._n hobbs_n than_o for_o mr._n k._n to_o defend_v be_v it_o then_o the_o law_n of_o the_o church_n that_o must_v determine_v who_o be_v the_o lawful_a pastor_n if_o this_o be_v his_o notion_n of_o they_o as_o his_o follow_a discourse_n will_v incline_v one_o to_o think_v what_o church_n do_v he_o mean_v who_o law_n must_v determine_v this_o great_a debate_n if_o the_o universal_a church_n i_o know_v none_o can_v make_v law_n to_o oblige_v all_o the_o member_n of_o it_o but_o christ_n himself_o who_o mr._n k._n grant_v to_o be_v the_o only_a head_n of_o it_o p._n 55._o and_o how_o shall_v we_o know_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o universal_a church_n in_o this_o matter_n when_o there_o have_v be_v no_o general_n council_n these_o many_o hundred_o year_n nay_o when_o there_o never_o be_v any_o such_o thing_n at_o all_o the_o large_a council_n that_o church-history_n record_v be_v summon_v by_o the_o roman_a emperor_n who_o mandate_n can_v not_o reach_v the_o extra-imperial_a church_n what_o be_v this_o church_n then_o who_o law_n or_o judgement_n must_v determine_v who_o be_v lawful_a pastor_n be_v it_o every_o national_a church_n if_o so_o it_o be_v a_o difficult_a matter_n to_o know_v what_o that_o be_v for_o unless_o mr._n k_o will_v give_v such_o a_o schismatical_a notion_n of_o it_o as_o the_o papist_n give_v of_o the_o catholic_n church_n it_o must_v include_v all_o the_o particular_a christian_n and_o particular_a society_n of_o such_o within_o the_o bound_n of_o that_o nation_n who_o profess_v the_o true_a christian_a religion_n in_o all_o its_o essential_o for_o all_o true_a church_n do_v not_o profess_v it_o in_o equal_a purity_n such_o a_o national_a church_n be_v not_o of_o divine_a institution_n and_o be_v indeed_o only_a a_o combination_n of_o church_n as_o unite_v under_o one_o civil_a sovereign_n it_o be_v true_a notion_n lie_v not_o in_o any_o combination_n pure_o ecclesiastical_a and_o disputable_a doctrine_n as_o betwixt_o lutheran_n and_o calvinist_n in_o the_o dominion_n of_o several_a german_a prince_n or_o about_o church-government_n and_o mode_n of_o worship_n etc._n etc._n as_o in_o these_o nation_n what_o if_o the_o several_a particular_a church_n according_a to_o these_o difference_n in_o their_o judgement_n fix_v under_o different_a pastor_n who_o be_v the_o church_n who_o law_n must_v decide_v this_o debate_n about_o lawful_a pastor_n be_v it_o such_o a_o assembly_n of_o the_o clergy_n as_o our_o convocation_n but_o what_o if_o both_o party_n have_v such_o assembly_n be_v it_o that_o party_n of_o the_o clergy_n which_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n do_v establish_v and_o not_o the_o other_o than_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n may_v in_o germany_n make_v both_o the_o lutheran_n and_o calvinist_n lawful_a pastor_n and_o here_o both_o the_o conformist_n and_o the_o nonconformist_n nay_o and_o unmake_v they_o at_o his_o pleasure_n and_o so_o make_v seem_v to_o confound_v a_o private_a and_o a_o public_a reformation_n 4._o the_o reason_n give_v why_o a_o bishop_n or_o presbyter_n when_o censure_v be_v discharge_v from_o his_o office_n viz._n because_o to_o regain_v it_o be_v like_o make_v a_o rebellion_n to_o regain_v a_o civil_a office_n do_v suppose_v two_o great_a mistake_n 1._o that_o the_o ordainer_n give_v a_o spiritual_a office_n
