and_o so_o he_o be_v confirm_v and_o harden_v in_o his_o idolatry_n and_o then_o 2_o as_o for_o the_o weak_a brother_n he_o suppose_v that_o the_o meat_n be_v so_o pollute_a by_o consecration_n and_o sacrifice_n 〈◊〉_d idol_n as_o that_o to_o eat_v thereof_o be_v a_o compliance_n with_o idolatry_n and_o therefore_o altogether_o sinful_a and_o hereupon_o the_o eat_n of_o these_o meat_n by_o the_o strong_a may_v occasion_v in_o the_o weak_a two_o scandal_n 1._o the_o example_n of_o the_o strong_a may_v entice_v they_o unto_o imitation_n and_o so_o they_o will_v sin_v against_o their_o conscience_n 2_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o strong_a may_v provoke_v they_o unto_o rash_a and_o uncharitable_a judgement_n both_o scandal_n give_v a_o great_a blow_n unto_o the_o conscience_n of_o the_o weak_a but_o that_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o the_o latter_a scandal_n i_o be_o induce_v to_o think_v by_o the_o word_n follow_v why_o be_v my_o liberty_n judge_v of_o another_o man_n ready_a to_o traduce_v it_o as_o a_o profane_a licentiousness_n why_o shall_v i_o drive_v he_o upon_o a_o sin_n which_o i_o may_v prevent_v by_o a_o prudent_a and_o charitable_a forbearance_n of_o the_o exercise_n of_o my_o liberty_n liberty_n be_v a_o thing_n which_o man_n out_o of_o a_o excessive_a self_n love_v so_o much_o overvalue_v as_o that_o they_o be_v very_o impatient_a of_o any_o restraint_n to_o be_v put_v upon_o it_o at_o all_o but_o the_o restraint_n that_o charity_n prompt_v we_o unto_o be_v of_o all_o other_o most_v disregard_v because_o there_o be_v nothing_o almost_o that_o be_v so_o much_o undervalue_v as_o the_o precious_a soul_n of_o our_o poor_a brethren_n and_o therefore_o we_o make_v but_o little_a conscience_n how_o thick_a we_o throw_v scandal_n in_o their_o way_n i_o shall_v therefore_o brief_o propound_v such_o weighty_a and_o press_v argument_n as_o the_o apostle_n use_v to_o persuade_v the_o roman_n and_o corinthian_n to_o abstain_v from_o a_o scandalous_a use_n of_o their_o liberty_n in_o thing_n otherwise_o indifferent_a and_o lawful_a and_o they_o be_v draw_v either_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n indifferent_a or_o from_o the_o still_o remain_v a_o ample_a field_n of_o they_o beside_o 1_o cor._n 10._o 28._o if_o any_o man_n say_v unto_o you_o this_o be_v offer_v in_o sacrifice_n unto_o idol_n eat_v not_o for_o his_o sake_n that_o show_v it_o etc._n etc._n the_o earth_n be_v the_o lord_n and_o the_o fullness_n thereof_o it_o be_v as_o much_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v though_o you_o abstain_v from_o thing_n offer_v unto_o idol_n yet_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n of_o want_n no_o fear_n of_o pinch_v your_o belly_n for_o you_o have_v the_o earth_n and_o the_o fullness_n thereof_o for_o your_o supply_n and_o from_o the_o scandal_n by_o meat_n we_o may_v argue_v in_o like_a manner_n touch_v the_o scandal_n by_o recreation_n if_o card_n dice_n table_n offend_v thy_o brother_n there_o be_v plenty_n enough_o of_o other_o sport_n bowl_v chess_n draught_n etc._n etc._n a_o second_o sort_n of_o argument_n that_o the_o apostle_n insist_o on_o be_v take_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o scandal_n it_o be_v a_o sin_n against_o that_o tender_a love_n which_o we_o owe_v unto_o our_o brethren_n and_o when_o you_o sin_n so_o against_o the_o brethren_n 1_o cor._n 8._o 12._o and_o that_o it_o be_v no_o small_a but_o a_o very_a heinous_a sin_n the_o next_o word_n evince_v and_o wound_v their_o weak_a conscience_n the_o word_n be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d where_o as_o beza_n well_o observe_v the_o antecedent_n wound_v the_o body_n the_o face_n the_o eye_n of_o our_o brother_n be_v a_o cruel_a and_o inhuman_a part_n but_o to_o wound_v so_o tender_a a_o piece_n as_o his_o conscience_n to_o wound_v a_o weak_a a_o sickly_a a_o disease_a conscience_n be_v the_o very_a height_n of_o inhumanity_n to_o wound_v the_o soul_n of_o a_o brother_n with_o sorrow_n be_v a_o breach_n of_o charity_n if_o thy_o brother_n be_v grieve_v with_o thy_o meat_n now_o walk_v thou_o not_o charitable_o rom._n 14._o 15._o and_o hence_o we_o may_v reason_v in_o a_o way_n of_o comparison_n à _fw-la minori_fw-la ad_fw-la own_o nature_n mortal_a and_o therefore_o scandal_n be_v not_o only_o of_o a_o wound_a but_o of_o a_o kill_a and_o destroy_v nature_n it_o be_v a_o soul_n murder_n destroy_v not_o he_o with_o thy_o meat_n rom._n 14._o 15._o indeed_o the_o weak_a that_o be_v scandalize_v may_v by_o god_n mercy_n and_o christ_n merit_n escape_v a_o actual_a destroy_n and_o damn_v but_o the_o apostle_n meaning_n be_v that_o the_o strong_v scandalize_a of_o they_o carry_v in_o its_o nature_n a_o tendency_n towards_o their_o destruction_n for_o it_o draw_v they_o into_o sin_n and_o sin_n without_o repentance_n will_v destroy_v the_o soul_n this_o malignant_a and_o destructive_a efficacy_n of_o scandal_n the_o apostle_n urge_v also_o unto_o the_o corinthian_n epistle_n 1._o chapt_n 8._o v._n 11._o and_o through_o thy_o knowledge_n shall_v thy_o weak_a brother_n perish_v that_o be_v through_o thy_o scandalous_a abuse_n of_o thy_o knowledge_n of_o thy_o liberty_n in_o eat_v thing_n offer_v unto_o beside_o the_o special_a 〈◊〉_d or_o outgoing_n of_o thing_n from_o god_n by_o that_o operation_n of_o which_o our_o saviour_n speak_v my_o father_n work_v hitherto_o and_o i_o also_o work_v there_o in_o themselves_o and_o as_o they_o be_v in_o regard_n of_o their_o effect_n and_o man_n opinion_n of_o they_o three_o from_o a_o twofold_a consideration_n of_o man_n himself_o as_o he_o be_v a_o particular_a private_a person_n and_o as_o he_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o universe_n first_o from_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o 629._o two_o essential_a part_n of_o man_n soul_n and_o body_n
