then the sword devoured 9 ¶ And Absalom met the servants of David and Absalom rode upon a mule and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak and his head caught hold of the oak and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth and the mule that was under him went away 10 And a certain man saw it and told Joab and said Behold I saw Absalom hanged in an oak 11 And Joab said unto the man that told him And behold thou sawest him and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver and a girdle 12 And the man said unto Joab Though I should †Heb. weigh upon mine hand receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand yet would I not put forth mine hand against the kings son for in our hearing the king charged thee Abishai and Ittai saying †Heb. VIII 1 The feast of the dedication of the temple 12 54 Solomons blessing 22 Solomons prayer 62 His sacrifice of peace offerings THen * 2 Chro. 5.2 Solomon assembled the elders of Israel and all the heads of the tribes the †Heb. priâ—â—â—â— chief of the fathers of the children of Israel unto king Solomon in Jerusalem that they might bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the city of David which is Zion 2 And all the men of Israel assembled themselves unto king Solomon at the feast in the moneth Ethanim which is the seventh moneth 3 And all the elders of Israel came and the priests took up the ark 4 And they brought up the ark of the LORD and the tabernacle of the congregation and all the holy vessels that were in the tabernacle even those did the priests and the Levites bring up 5 And king Solomon and all the congregation of Israel that were assembled unto him were with him before the ark sacrificing sheep and oxen that could not be told nor numbred for multitude 6 And the priest-brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD unto his place into the oracle of the house to the most holy place even under the wings of the cherubims 7 For the cherubims spread forth their two wings over the place of the ark and the cherubims covered the ark the staves thereof above 8 And they drew out the staves that the †Heb. heard ends of the staves were seen out in the ‖ Or arkâ— as 2 Chr. 5. â— holy place before the oracle and they were not seen without and there they are unto this day 9 There was nothing in the ark * Deu. 10.5 save the two tables of stone which MOses put there at Horeb ‖ Or where when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel when they came out of the land of Egypt 10 And it came to pass when the priests were come out of the holy place that the cloud * Exod. 4â— 34 filled the house of the LORD 11 So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD 12 ¶ Then spake Solomon The LORD * 2 Chr. 6.1 said that he would dwell in the thick darkness 13 I have surely built thee an house to dwell in a settled place for thee to abide in for ever 14 And the king turned his face about and blessed all the congregation of Israel and all the congregation of Israel stood 15 And he said Blessed be the LORD God of Israel which spake with his mouth unto David my father and hath with his hand fulfilled it saying 16 Since the day that I brought forth my people Israel out of Egypt I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel to build an house that my name might be therein but I chose * 2 Sam. 7.8 David to be over my people Israel 17 And it was in the heart of David my father to build an house for the name of the LORD God of Israel 18 And the LORD said unto David my father Whereas it was in thine heart to build an house unto my name thou didst well that it was in thine heart 19 Nevertheless thou shalt not build the house but thy son that shall come forth out of thy loyns he shall build the house unto my name 20 And the LORD hath performed his word that he spake and I am risen up in the room of David my father and sit on the throne of Israel as the LORD promised and have built an house for the name of the LORD God of Israel 21 And I have set there a place for the ark wherein is the covenant of the LORD which he made with our fathers when he brought them out of the land of Egypt 22 ¶ And Solomon stood before * 2 Chr. 6.12 the altar of the LORD in the presence of all the congregation of Israel and spread forth his hands toward heaven 23 And he said * 2 Mac. 2.8 LORD God of Israel there is no God like thee in heaven above or on earth beneath who keepest covenant and mercy with thy servants that walk before thee with all their heart 24 Who hast kept with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him thou spakest also with thy mouth and hast fulfilled it with thine hand as it is this day 25 Therefore now LORD God of Israel keep with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him saying * Chap. 2.4 2 Sâ—m 7.12 †Heb. said unto them Speak ye now to Hezekiah Thus saith the great king the king of Assyria What confidence is this wherein thou trustest 20 Thou ‖ Or talkest sayest but they are but †Heb. word of the lips vain words ‖ Or but counsel and strength are for the war I have counsel and strength for the war now on whom doest thou trust that thou rebellest against me 21 Now behold thou †Heb. trustest this trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed even upon Egypt on which if a man lean it will go into his hand and pierce it so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him 22 But if ye say unto me We trust in the LORD our God is not that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem 23 Now therefore I pray thee gâ—ve ‖ Or bostageâ— pledges to my lord the king of Assyria and I will deliver thee two thousand horses if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them 24 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my masters servants and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for hors-men 25 Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it The LORD said to me Go up against this land and destroy it 26 Then said Eliakin the son of Hilkiah and Shebna and Joah unto Rab-shakeh Speak I pray thee to thy servants in the Syrian language for we understand it and talk not with us in the Jews language in the ears of the people that are on the wall 27 But Rab-shakeh said unto them Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall that they may eat their own dung and drink †Heb. the water of their feet their own piss with you 28 Then Rab-shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews language and spake saying Hear the word of the great king the king of Assyria 29 Thus saith the king Let not Hezekiah deceive you for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand 30 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD saying The LORD will surely deliver us and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria 31 Hearken not unto Hezekiah for thus saith the king of Assyria ‖ Or Seek my favour †Heb. Make with me a blessing Make an agreement with me by a present and come out to me and then eat ye every man of his own vine and every one of his fig-tree and drink ye every one the waters of his ‖ Or pit cistern 32 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land a land of corn and wine a land of bread vineyards a land of oyl-olive and of honey that ye may live and not die and hearken not unto Hezekiah when he ‖ Or deceiveth perswadeth you saying The LORD will deliver us 33 Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria 34 Where are the gods of Hamath and of Arpad where are the gods of Sepharvaim Hena and Ivah have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand 35 Who are they among all the gods of the countreys that have delivered their countrey out of mine hand that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand 36 But the people held their peace and answered him not a word for the kings commandment was saying Answer him not 37 Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah which was over the houshold and Shebna the scribe and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder to Hezekiah with their clothes rent and told him the words of Rab-shakeh CHAP. XIX 1 Hezekiâ—h mourning sendeth to Isaiah to pray for them 6 Isaiah comforteth them 8 Sennacherib going to encounter Tirhakah sendeth a blasphemous letter to Hezekiah 14 Hezekiah his prayer 20 Isaiah his prophesie of the pride and destruction of Sennacherib and the good of Zion 35 An angel slayeth the Assyrians 36 Sennacherib is slain at Nineveh by his own sons ANd * Isai 37.1 it came to pass when king Hezekiah heard it that he rent his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the LORD 2 And he sent Eliakim which was over the houshold and Shebna the scribe and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth to * Luke 3.4 called Esaias Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz 3 And they said unto him Thus saith Hezekiah This day is a day of trouble and of rebuke and ‖ Or provocation blasphemy for the children are come to the birth and there is not strength to bring forth 4 It may be the LORD thy God will hear all the words of Rab-shakeh whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that are †Heb. found left 5 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah 6 ¶ And Isaiah said unto them Thus shall ye say to your master Thus saith the LORD Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me 7 Behold I will send a blast upon him and he shall hear a rumour and shall return to his own land and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land 8 ¶ So Rab-shakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah for he had heard that he was departed from Zachish 9 And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia Behold he is come out to fight against thee he sent messengers again unto Hezekiah saying 10 Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah saying Let not thy God in whom thou trustest deceive thee saying Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria 11 Behold thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly and shalt thou be delivered 12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed as Gozan and Haran and Rezeph and the children of Eden which were in Thelasar 13 Where is the king of Hamath and the king of Arpad and the king of the city of Sepharvaim of Henah and Ivah 14 ¶ And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers and read it and Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD and spread it before the LORD 15 And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD said O LORD God of Israel which dwellest between the cherubims thou art the God even thou alone of all the kingdoms of the

IV. 1 The altar of brass 2 The molten sea upon twelve oxen 6 The ten lavers candlesticks and tables 9 The courts and the instrumants of brass 19 The instruments of gold MOreover he made an altar of brass twenty cubits the length thereof and twenty cubits the breadth thereof and ten cubits the height thereof 2 ¶ * 1 King 7.23 Also he made a molten sea of ten cubits †Heb. from his brim to his brim from brim to brim round in compass and five cubits the height thereof and a fine of thirty cubits did compass it round about 3 * 1 King 7.24 And under it was the similitude of oxen which did compass it round about ten in a cubit compassing the sea round about Two rows of oxen were cast when it was cast 4 It stood upon twelve oxen three looking toward the north and three looking toward the west and three looking toward the south and three looking toward the east and the sea was set above upon them and all their hinder parts were inward 5 And the thickness of it was an hand-breadth and the brim of it like the work of the brim of a cup ‖ Or â—â—â—e a lily-flower with flowers of lilies and it received and held threâ— thousand baths 6 ¶ He made also ten lavers and put five on the right hand and five on the left to wash in them †Heb. the work of burnt-offering such things as they offered for the burnt-offering they washed in them but the sea was for the priests to wash in 7 And he made ten candlesticks of gold according to their form and set them in the temple five on the right hand and five on the left 8 He made also ten tables and placed them in the temple five on the right side and five on the left and he made an hundred ‖ Or hands basons of gold 9 ¶ Furthermore he made the court of the priests the great court and doors for the court and overlaid the doors of them with brass 10 And he set the sea on the right side of the east-end over against the south 11 And Huram made the pots and the shovels and the ‖ Or bowls basons and Huram †Heb. finished to make finished the work that he was to make for king Solomon for the house of God 12 To wit the two pillars and the pommels and the chapiters which were on the top of the two pillars and the two wreaths to cover the two pommels of the chapiters which were on the top of the pillars 13 And four hundred pomegranates on the two wreaths two rows of pomegranates on each wreath to cover the two pommels of the chapiters which were †Heb. upon the face upon the pillars 14 He made also bases and ‖ Or caldrons lavers made he upon the bases 15 One sea and twelve oxen under it 16 The pots also and the shovels and the flesh hooks and all their instruments did Huram his father make to king Solomon for the house of the LORD of †Heb. made bright or scoured bright brass 17 In the plain of Jordan did the king cast them in the †Heb. thicknesses of the ground clay-ground between Succoth and and Zeredathah 18 Thus Solomon made all these vessels in great abundance for the weight of the brass could not be found out 19 ¶ And Solomon made all the vessels that were for the house of God the golden altar also the tables whereon the shew-bread was set 20 Moreover the candlesticks with their lamps that they should burn after the manner before the oracle of pure gold 21 And the flowers and the lamps and the tongs made he of gold and that †Heb. perfections of gold perfect gold 22 And the snuffers and the ‖ Or bowls basons and the spoons and the censers of pure gold and the entry of the house the inner doors thereof for the most holy place and the doors of the house of the temple were of gold CHAP. V. 1 The dedicated treasures 2 The solemn induction of the ark into the cracle 11 God being praised giveth a visible signe of his favour THus all the work that Solomon made for the house of the LORD was finished * 1 King 7.51 and Solomon brought in all the things that David his father had dedicated and the silver and the gold

VII 1 Esther entertaining the king and Haman maketh suit for her own life and her peoples 5 She accuseth Haman 7 The king in his â—nâ—er understanding of the gallows which Haman had made for Mordecai causeth him to be banâ—ed thereon SO the king and Haman came †Heb. to drink to banquet with Esther the queen 2 And the king said again to Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine What is thy petition queen Esther and it shall be granted thee and what is thy request and it shall be performed even to the half of the kingdom 3 Then Esther the queen answered and said If I have found favour in thy sight O king and if it please the king let my life be given me at my petition and my people at my request 4 For we are sold I and my people †Heb. that they should destroy and kill and cause to perish to be destroyed to be slain and to perish but if we had been sold for bond men bond-women I had held my tongue although the enemy could not counter all the kings damage 5 ¶ Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen Who is he and where is he †Heb. whose heart hath filled him that durst presume in his heart to do so 6 And Esther said †Heb. the man adversary The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman Then Haman was afraid ‖ Or. at the presence of before the king and the queen 7 ¶ And the king arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace-garden and Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther the queen for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king 8 Then the king returned out of the palace-garden into the place of the banquet of wine and Haman was fain upon the bed whereon Esther was Then said the king Will he force the queen also †Heb. with me before me in the house As the word went out of the kings mouth they covered Hamans face 9 And Harbonah one of the chamberlains said before the king Behold also the †Heb. tree gallows fifty cubits high which Haman had made for Mordecai who had spoken good for the king standeth in the house of Haman Then the king said Hang him thereon 10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai Then was the kings wrath pacified CHAP. VIII 1 Mordecai is advanced 3 Esther maketh suit to reverse Hamans letters 7 Ahasuerus granteth to the Jews to defend themselves 15 Mordecai's honour and the Jews joy ON that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews enemy unto Esther the queen and Mordecai came before the king for Esther had told what he was unto her 2 And the king took off his ring which he had taken from Haman gave it unto Mordecai And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman 3 ¶ And Esther spake yet again before the king and fell down at his feet †Heb. she wept besought him and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman the Agagite and his device that he had devised against the Jews 4 Then the king held out the golden sceptre toward Esther So Esther arose and stood before the king 5 And said If it please the king and if I have found favour in his fight and the thing seem right before the king and I be pleasing in his eyes let it be written to reverse †Heb. thâ— device the letters devised by Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite ‖ Or who wrote which he wrote to destroy the Jews which are in all the kings provinces 6 For how can I †Heb. 〈◊〉 able that I may see endure to see the evil that shall come unto my people or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred 7 ¶ Then the king Ahasuerus said unto Esther the queen to Mordecai the Jew Behold I have given Esther the house of Haman him they have hanged upon the gallows because he laid his hands upon the Jews 8 Write ye also for the Jews as it liketh you in the kings name and seal it with the kings ring for the writing which is written in the kings name and sealed with the kings ring * See chap. 1.19 may no man reverse 9 Then were the kings scribes called at that time in the third moneth that is the moneth Sivan on the three and twentieth day thereof and it was written according to all that Mordecai commanded unto the Jews and to the lieutenants and the deputies and rulers of the provinces which are from India unto Ethiopia an hundred twenty and seven provinces unto every province according to the writing thereof and unto every people after their language and to the Jews according to their writing and according to their language 10 And he wrote in the king Ahasuerus name and sealed it with the kings ring and sent letters by posts on hors-back and riders on mules and young dromedaries 11 Wherein the king granted the Jews which were in every city to gather themselves together and to stand for their life to destroy to slay and to cause to perish all the power of the people and province that would assault them both little ones and women and to take the spoil of them for a prey 12 Upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus namely upon the thirteenth day of the twefth moneth which is the moneth Adar 13 The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was †Heb. revealed published unto all people and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies 14 So the posts that rode upon mules and camels went out being hastned and pressed on by the kings commandment and the decree was given at Shushan the palace 15 ¶ And Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel ofâ—blue white with a great crown of gold with a garment of fine linen and purple the city of Shushan rejoyced and was glad 16 The Jews had light and gladness

XXXVI 1 Sennacherib invadeth Judah 4 Raâ—shakeh sent by Sennacherib by blasphemous peâ—swasions sollienteth the people to revolt 22 His words are cold to Hezekiah NOw * 2 King 18.13 2 Chro. 32.1 it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah and took them 2 And the king of Assyriasent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army and he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the high-way of the fullers field 3 Then came forth unto him Eliakim Hilkiahs son which was over the house and Shebna the ‖ Or secretary scribe and Joah Asaphs son the recorder 4 ¶ And Rabshakeh said unto them Say ye now to Hezekiah Thus saith the great king the king of Assyria What confidence is this wherein thou trustest 5 I say sayest thou but they are but †Heb. a word of lips vain words ‖ Or But counsel and strength are for the war I have counsel and strength for war now on whom dost thou trust that thou rebellest against me 6 Lo thou trustest in the * Ezek. 29.6 7. staff of this broken reed on Egypt whereon if a man lean it will go into his hand and pierce it so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him 7 But if thou say to me We trust in the LORD our God is it not he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away and said to Judah and to Jerusalem Ye shall worship before this altar 8 Now therefore give ‖ Or bostages pledges I pray thee to my master the king of Assyria and I will give thee two thousand horses if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them 9 How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my masters servants and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for hors-men 10 And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it the LORD said unto me Go up against this land and destroy it 11 ¶ Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh Speak I pray thee unto thy servants in the Syrian language for we understand it and speak not to us in the Jews language in the ears of the people that are on the wall 12 ¶ But Rabshakeh said Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words hath be not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall that they may eat their own dung and drink their own piss with you 13 Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews language and said Hear ye the words of the great king the king of Assyria 14 Thus saith the king Let not Hezekiah deceive you for he shall not be able to deliver you 15 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD saying The LORD will surely deliver us this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria 16 Hearken not to He ekiah for thus saith the king of Assyria ‖ Or Seek my favour by a present †Heb. Make with me a blessing Make an agreement with me by a present and come out to me and eat ye every one of his vine and every one of his fig-tree and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern 17 Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land a land of corn and wine a land of bread and vineyards 18 Beware lest Hezekiah perswade you saying The LORD will deliver us Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad where are the gods of Sepharvaim and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand 20 Who are they amongst all the gods of these lands that have delivered their land out of my hand that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand 21 But they held their peace and answered him not a word for the kings commandment was saying Answer him not 22 ¶ Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah that was over the houshold and Shebna the scribe and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder to Hezekiah with their clothes rent and told him the words of Rabshakeh CHAP. XXXVII 1 Hezekiah mourning sendeth to Isaiah to pray for them 6 Isaiah comforteth them 8 Sennacherih going to encounter Tirhakah sendeth a blasphemous letter to Hezekiah 14 Hezekiahs prayer 21 Isaiah his prophesie of the pride and destruction of Sennacherih and the good of Zion 26 An Angel slayeth the Assyrians 37 Sennacherih is slain at Nineveh by his own sons ANd * 2 Kin. 19.1 c. it came to â—ass when king Hezekiah heard it that he rent his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the LORD 2 And he sent Eliakim who was over the houshold and Shebna the scribe and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz 3 And they said unto him Thus saith Hezekiah This day is a day of trouble and of rebuke and of ‖ Or provocation blasphemy for the children are come to the birth and there is not strength to bring forth 4 It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard wherefore â—ift up thy prayer for the remnant that is †Heb. found left 5 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah 6 ¶ And Isaiah said unto them Thus shall ye say unto your master Thus saith the LORD Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me 7 Behold I will ‖ Or put a spirit into him send a blast upon him and he shall hear a rumour and return to his own land and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land 8 ¶ So Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah
them 21 And they gathered it every morning every man according to his eating and when the sun waxed hot it melted 22 ¶ And it came to pass that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread two omers for one man and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses 23 And he said unto them This is that which the LORD hath said To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD bake that which ye will bake to day and seethe that ye will seethe and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning 24 And they laid it up tâ—ll the morning as Moses bade and it did not stink neither was there any worm therein 25 And Moses said Eat that to day for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD to day ye shall not finde it in the field 26 Six days ye shall gather it but on the seventh day which is the sabbath in it there shall be none 27 ¶ And it came to pass that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather and they found none 28 And the LORD said unto Moses How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws 29 See for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days abide ye every man in his place let no man go out of his place on the seventh day 30 So the people rested on the seventh day 31 And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna and it was like coriander-seed white and the taste of it was like wasers made with honey 32 ¶ And Moses said This is the thing which the LORD commandeth Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations that they may see the bread wherewith I have fed you in the wilderness when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt 33 And Moses said unto Aaron Take a pot and put an omer full of manna therein and lay it up before the LORD to be kept for your generations 34 As the LORD commanded Moses so Aaron laid it up before the testimony to be kept 35 And the children of Israel did eat manna fourty years * Jos 5.12 Neh. 9.15 until they came to a land inhabited they did eat manna until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan 36 Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah CHAP. XVII 1 The people murmure for water at Rephidim 5 God sendeth them for water to the rock in Horeb. 8 Awalek is overcome by the holding up of Moses hands 15 Moses buildeth the altar JEHOVAH-nissi ANd all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin after their journeys according to the commandment of the LORD and pitched in Rephidim and there was no water for the people to drink 2 * Numb 20.4 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses and said Give us water that we may drink And Moses said unto them Why chide you with me wherefore do ye tempt the LORD 3 And the people thirsted there for water and the people murmured against Moses and said Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt to kill us and our children our cattel with thirst 4 And Moses cried unto the LORD saying What shall I do unto this people they be almost ready to stone me 5 And the LORD said unto Moses Go on before the people and take with thee of the elders of Israel and thy rod wherewith * Chap. 7.20 thou smotest the river take in thine hand and go 6 * Numb 20.9 Psa 78.15 105.41 Wis 11.4 1 Cor. 10.4 Behold I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb and thou shalt smite the rock and there shall come water out of it that the people may drink And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel 7 And he called the name of the place ‖ That is tentation Massah and ‖ That is â—biding or strife Meribah because of the chiding of the children of Israel and because they tempted the LORD saying Is the LORD among us or not 8 ¶ * Deut. 25.17 Wis 11.3 Then came Amalek and sought with Israel in Rephidim 9 And Moses said unto * Called Jesus Acts 7.45 Joshua Choose us out men and go out fight with Amalek to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand 10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him and fought with Amalek and Moses Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill 11 And it came to pass when Moses held up his hand that Israel prevailed and when he let down his hand Amalek prevailed 12 But Moses hands were heavy and they took a stone and put it under him and he sat thereon and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands the one on the one side and the other on the other side and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun 13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword 14 And the LORD said unto Moses Write this for a memorial in a book and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua for * Numb 24 20. 1 Sam. 15.3 I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven 15 And Moses built an altar and called the name of it ‖ That is the LORD my banner JEHOVAH-niâ—li 16 For he said ‖ Or Because the hand of Amalek is against the throne of the LORD therefore c. Because †Heb. the hand upon the throne of the LORD the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation CHAP. XVIII 1 Jethro bringeth to Moses his wife and two sons 7 Moses entertaineth him 13 Jethro's counsel is accepted 27 Jethro departeth WHen * Chap. 2.16 Jethro the priest of Midian Moses father in law heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel his people and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt 2 Then Jethro Moses father in law took Zipporah Moses wife after he had sent her back 3 And her two sons of which the * Chap. 2.22 name of the one was ‖ That is a stranger there Gerihom for he said I have been an alien in a strange land 4 And the name of the other was ‖ That is my God is an help Eliezer for the God of my father said be was mine help and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh 5 And Jethro Moses father in law came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness where he encamped at the mount of God 6 And he said unto Moses I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee and thy wife and her two sons with her 7 ¶ And Moses went out to meet his father in
upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue cover it with a covering of badgers skins and shall put to the staves thereof 12 And they shall take all the instruments of ministery wherewith they minister in the sanctuary and put them in a cloth of blue and cover them with a covering of badgers skins and shall put them on a bar 13 And they shall take away the ashes from the altar and spread a purple cloth thereon 14 And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof wherewith they minister about it even the censers the flesh-hooks and the shovels and the ‖ Or. bowlâ— basons all the vessels of the altar and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers skins and put to the staves of it 15 And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary and all the vessels of the sanctuary as the camp is to set forward after that the sons of Koâ—ath shall come to bear it but they shall not touch any holy thing lest they die These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation 16 ¶ And to the office of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest pertaineth the oyl for the light and the * Exod. 3â— 34 sweet incense and the daily meat-offering and the * Exod. 30.23 anointing oyl and the oversight of all the tabernacle and of all that therein is in the sanctuary and in the vessels thereof 17 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 18 Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites 19 But thus do unto them that they may live and not die when they approach unto the most holy things Aaron and his sons shall go in and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden 20 But they shall not go in to see when the holy things are covered lest they die 21 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 22 Take also the sum of the sons of Gershon throughout the houses of their fathers by their families 23 From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them all that enter in †Heb. to war the warfare to perform the service to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation 24 This is the service of the families of the Gershonites to serve and for ‖ Or carriage burdens 25 And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle and the tabernacle of the congregation his covering and the covering of the badgers skins that is above upon it and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 26 And the hangings of the court and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about and their cords and all the instruments of their service and all that is made for them so shall they serve 27 At the †Heb. mouth appointment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites in all their burdens and in all their service and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burdens 28 This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest 29 ¶ As for the sons of Merari thou shalt number them after their families by the house of their fathers 30 From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them every one that entreth in to the †Heb. warfare service to do the work of the tabernacle of the congregation 31 And this is the charge of their burden according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation * Exod. 26.15 the boards of the tabernacle and the bars thereof and the pillars thereof and sookets thereof 32 And the pillars of the court round about and their sockets and their pins and their cords with all their instruments and with all their services and by name ye shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden 33 This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest 34 ¶ And Moses and Aaron and the chief of the congregation numbred the sons of the Kohathites after their families and after the house of their fathers 35 From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old every one that entreth in to the service for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation 36 And those that were numbred of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty 37 These were they that were numbred of the families of the Kohathites all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation which Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses 38 And those that were numbred of the sons of Gershon throughout their families and by the house of their fathers 39 From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old every one that entreth in to the service for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation 40 Even those that were numbred of them throughout their families by the houses of their fathers were two thousand and fix hundred and thirty 41 These are they that were numbred of the families of the sons of Gershon of all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation whom Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD 42 ¶ And those that were numbred of the families of the sons of Merari throughout their families by the house of their fathers 43 From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old every one that entreth in to the service for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation 44 Even those that were numbred of them after their families were three thousand and two hundred 45 These be those that were numbred of the families of the sons of Merari whom Moses and Aaron numbred according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses 46 All those that were numbred of the Levites whom Moses and Aaron and the chief of Israel numbred after their families and after the house of their fathers 47 From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old every one that came to do the service of the ministery and the service of the burden in the tabernacle of the congregation 48 Even those that were numbred of them were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore 49 According to the commandment of the LORD they were numbred by the hand of Moses every one according to his service and according to his burden thus were they numbred of him as the LORD
year of Solomons reign over Israel in the moneth Zif which is the second moneth that he †Heb. built began to build the house of the LORD 2 And the house which king Solomon built for the LORD the length thereof was threescore cubits and the breadth thereof twenty cubits and the height thereof thirty cubits 3 And the porch before the temple of the house twenty cubits was the length thereof according to the breadth of the house and ten cubits was the breadth thereof before the house 4 And for the house he made ‖ Or windows broad within and narrow without or skewed and closed windows of narrow lights 5 ¶ And ‖ Or upon or joyning to against the wall of the house he built †Heb. floors chambers round about against the walls of the house round about both of the temple and of the oracle and he made †Heb. ribt chambers round about 6 The nethermost chamber was five cubits broad and the middle was six cubits broad and the third was seven cubits broad for without in the wall of the house he made †Heb. narrowings or rebatements narrowed rests round about that the beams should not be fastned in the walls of the house 7 And the house when it was in building was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither so that there was neither hammer nor ax nor any tool of iron heard in the house while it was in building 8 The door for the middle chamber was in the right †Heb shoulder side of the house and they went up with winding stairs into the middle chamber and out of the middle into the third 9 So he built the house and finished it and covered the house ‖ Or the vault-beams and the cielings with cedar with beams and boards of cedar 10 And then he built chambers against all the house five cubits high and they rested on the house with timber of cedar 11 ¶ And the word of the LORD came to Solomon saying 12 Concerning this house which thou art in building if thou wilt walk in my statutes and execute my judgements and keep all my commandments to walk in them then will I perform my word with thee * 2 Sam. 7.13 1 Chr. 22.10 which I spake unto David thy father 13 And I will dwell among the children of Israel and will not forsake my people Israel 14 So Solomon built the house and finished it 15 And he built the walls of the house within with boards of cedar ‖ Or from the floor of the house unto the walls c. and so vers 16. both the floor of the house and the walls of the cieling and he covered them on the inside with wood and covered the floor of the house with planks of fir 16 And he built twenty cubits on the sides of the house both the floor and the walls with boards of cedar he even built them for it within even for the oracle even for the most holy place 17 And the house that is the temple before it was fourty cubits long 18 And the cedar of the house within was carved with ‖ Or â—â—ouras knops and †Heb. openings of flowers open flowers all was celar there was no stone seen 19 And the oracle he prepared in the house within to set there the ark of the covenant of the LORD 20 And the oracle in the forepart was twenty cubits in length and twenty cubits in breadth and twenty cubits in the height thereof he overlaid it with †Heb. shut up pure gold and so covered the altar which was of cedar 21 So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold and he made a partition by the chains of gold before the oracle and he overlaid it with gold 22 And the whole house he overlaid with gold until he had finished all the house also the whole altar that was by the oracle he overlaid with gold 23 ¶ And within the oracle he made two cherubims of ‖ Or â—â—l◠†Heb. trâ—â—â—f oâ—l olive-tree each ten cubits high 24 And five cubits was the one wing of the cherub and five cubits the other wing of the cherub from the uttermost part of the one wing unto the uttermost part of the other were ten cubits 25 And the other cherub was ten cubits both the cherubims were of one measure and one cise 26 The height of the one cherub was ten cubits and so was it of the other cherub 27 And he set the cherubims within the inner house and * Exoâ— 25.20 ‖ Or the cherubims â—irâ—â—hed fâ—rth their wiâ—â—s they stretched forth the wings of the cherubims so that the wing of the one touched the one wall and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall and their wings touched one another in the midst of the house 28 And he overlaid the cherubims with gold 29 And he carved all the walls of the house round about with carved figures of cherubims and palm-trees and †Heb. opinines flowers open flowers within and without 30 And the floor of the house he overlaid with gold within and without 31 ¶ And for the entring of the oracle he made doors of olive-tree the lintel and side-posts were ‖ Or five-square a fifth part of the wall 32 The ‖ Or leâ—ves of the doors two doors also were of olive-tree and he carved upon them carvings of cherubims and palm-trees and †Heb. openings of flowers open flowers and overlaid them with gold and spread gold upon the cherubims and up in the palm-trees 33 So also made he for the door of the temple posts of olive-tree ‖ Or four-square a fourth part of the wall 34 And the two doors were of fir-tree the two leaves of the one door were folding and the two leaves of the other door were folding 35 And he carved thereon cherubims and palm-trees and open flowers and covered them with gold fitted upon the carved work 36 ¶ And he built the inner court with three rows of hewed stone and a row of cedar-beams 37 ¶ In the fourth year was the foundation of the house of the LORD laid in the moneth Zif 38 And in the eleventh year in the moneth Bul which is the eighth moneth was the house finished ‖ Or with all the appurtenances thereof and with all the ordinances thereof throughout all the parts thereof and according to all the fashion of it So was he seven years in building it CHAP. VII 1 The building of Solomons house 2 of the house of Lebanon 6 of the porch of pillars 7 of the porch of judgement 8 of the house for Pharaohs daughter 13 Hirains work of the two pillars 23 of the molten sea 27 of the ten bases 38 of the ten lavers 40 and all the vessels BUt Solomon was building his own house * Chap. 9.10 thirteen years and he finished
all his house 2 ¶ He built also the house of the forrest of Lebanon the length thereof was a hundred cubits and the breadth thereof fifty cubits and the height thereof thirty cubits upon four rows of cedar-pillars with cedar-beams upon the pillars 3 And it was covered with cedar above upon the †Heb. ribs beams that lay on fourty five pillars fifteen in a row 4 And there were windows in three rows and †Heb. sight against sight light was against light in three ranks 5 And all the ‖ Or spaces and pillars were square in prospect doors and posts were square with the windows and light was against light in three ranks 6 ¶ And he made a porch of pillars the length thereof was fifty cubits and the breadth thereof thirty cubits and the porch was ‖ Or according to them before them and the other pillars and the thick beam were ‖ Or according to them before them 7 ¶ Then he made a porch for the throne where he might judge even the porch of judgement and it was covered with cedar †Heb. from floor to floor from one side of the floor to the other 8 ¶ And his house where he dwelt had another court within the porch which was of the like work Solomon made also an house for Pharaohs daughter * Chap. 3.1 whom he had taken to wife like unto this porch 9 All these were of costly stones according to the measures of hewed stones sawed with saw within and without even from the foundation unto the coping and so on the outside toward the great court 10 And the foundation was of costly stones even great stones stones of ten cubits and stones of eight cubits 11 And above were costly stones after the measures of hewed stones and cedars 12 And the great court round about was with three rows of hewed stones and a row of cedar beams both for the inner court of the house of the LORD and for the porch of the house 13 ¶ And king Solomon sent and see Hiram out of Tyre 14 He was †Heb. the â—â—n of a widow woman a widows son of the tribe of Naphtali and his father was a man of Tyre a worker in brass and he was filled with wisdom and understanding and cunning to work all works in brass and he came to king Solomon and wrought all his work 15 For he †Heb. fashioned cast two pillars of brass of eighteen cubits high apiece and a line of twelve cubits did compass either of them about 16 And he made two chapiters of molten brass to set upon the tops of the pillars the height of the one chapiter was five cubits and the height of the other chapiter was five cubits 17 And nets of checker-work and wreaths of chain-work for the chapiters which were upon the top of the pillars seven for the one chapiter and seven for the other chapiter 18 And he made the pillars and two rows round about upon the one net-work to cover the chapiters that were upon the top with pomegranates and so did he for the other chapiter 19 And the chapiters that were upon the top of the pillars were of lilie-work in the porch four cubits 20 And the chapiters upon the two pillars had pomegranates also above over against the belly which was by the net-work and the pomegranates were two hundred in rows round about upon that other chapiter 21 * 2 Chr. 2.17 And he se up the pillars in the porch of the temple and he set up the right pillar and called the name thereof ‖ That is He shall establish Jachin and he set up the left pillar and called the name thereof ‖ That is In it is strength Boaz. 22 And upon the top of the pillars was lilie-work so was the work of the pillars finished 23 ¶ And he made a molten sea ten cubits †Heb. from his brim to his 〈◊〉 from the one brim to the other it was round all about and his height was five cubits and a line of thirty cubits did compass it round about 24 And under the brim of it round about there were knops compassing it ten in a cubit * 2 Câ—â—â— 4.3 compassing the sea round about the knops were cast in two rows when it was cast 25 It stood upon twelve oxen three looking toward the north and three looking toward the west and three looking toward the south and three looking toward the east and the sea was set above upon them and all their hinder parts were inward 26 And it was an hand-breadth thick and the brim thereof was wrought like the brim or a cup with flowers of lilies it contained two thousand baths 27 ¶ And he made ten bases of brass four cubits was the length of one base four cubits the breadth thereof and three cubits the height of it 28 And the work of the bases was on this manner They had borders and the borders were between the ledges 29 And on the borders that were between the ledges were lions oxen and cherubims and upon the ledges there was a base above and beneath the lions and oxen were certain additions made of thin work 30 And every base had four brasen wheels and plates of brass and the four corners thereof had undersetters under the laver were undersetters molten at the side of every addition 31 And the mouth of it within the chapiter and above was a cubit but the mouth thereof was round after the work of the base a cubit and an halt and also upon the mouth of it were gravings with their borders four-square not round 32 And under the borders were four wheels and the axle-trees of the wheels were †Heb. in the base joyned to the base and the height of a wheel was a cubit and half a cubit 33 And the work of the wheels was like the work of a chariot wheel their axle-trees and their naves and their felloes and their spokes were all molten 34 And there were four undersetters to the four corners of one base and the undersetters were of the very base it self 35 And in the top of the base was there a round compass of half a cubit high and on the top of the base the ledges thereof and the borders thereof were of the same 36 For on the plates of the ledges thereof and on the borders thereof he graved cherubims lions and palm-trees according to the †Heb. nakedness proportion of every one and additions round about 37 After this manner he made the ten bases all of them had one casting one measure and one cise 38 ¶ Then made he ten lavers of brass one laver contained fourty baths and every laver was four cubits and upon every one of the ten bases one laver 39 And he put five bases on forborn to fight they have remained in their holds their might hath sailed they became as women they have burnt her dwelling-places her bars are broken 31 One post shall run to meet another and one messenger to meet another to shew the king of Babylon that his city is taken at one end 32 And that the passages are stopped and the reeds they have burnt with fire and the men of war are affrighted 33 For thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing-floor ‖ Or in the time that be thresheth her it is time to thresh her yet a little while and the time their heat I will make their feasts and I will make them drunken that they may rejoyce and sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake saith the LORD 40 I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter covered with the multitude of the waves thereof 43 Her cities are a desolation a dry land and a wilderness a land wherein no man dwelleth neither doth any son of man pass thereby 44 And I will punish Bel in Babylon and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up and the nations shall not flow together any more unto him yea the wall of Babylon shall fall 45 My people go ye out of the midst of her and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger or the LORD 46 And lest your heart faint and ye fear for the rumour that shall be heard in the land a rumour shall both come one year and after that in another year shall come a rumour and violence in the land ruler against ruler 47 Therefore behold the days come that I will †Heb. visit upon do judgement upon the it upon thy shoulders and carry it forth in the twilight thou shalt cover thy face that thou see not the ground for I have set thee for a signe unto the house of Israel 7 And I did so as I was commanded I brought forth my stuff by day as stuff for captivity and in the even I †Heb. digged for me digged through the wall with mine hand I brought it forth in the twilight and I bare it upon my shoulder in their sight 8 ¶ And in the morning came the word of the LORD unto me saying 9 Son of man hath not the house of Israel the rebellious house said unto thee What doest thou 10 Say thou unto them Thus saith the Lord GOD This burden concerneth the prince in Jerusalem and all the house of Israel that are among them 11 Say I am your signe like as I have done so shall it be done unto them †Heb. by removing go into captivity they shall remove and go into captivity 12 And the prince that is among them shall bear upon his shoulder in the twilight and shall go forth they shall dig through the wall to carry out thereby he shall cover his face that he see not the ground with his eyes 13 My * Ch. 17 2â— net also will I spread upon him and he shall be taken in my snare and I will bring him to Babylon to the land of the Caldeans yet shall he not see it though he shall die there 14 And I will scatter toward every wind all that are about him to help him and all his bands and I will draw out the sword after them 15 And they shall know that I am the LORD when I shall scatter them among the nations and disperse them in the countreys 16 But I will leave †Heb. men of number a few men of them from the sword from the famine and from the pestilence that they may declare all their abominations among the heathen whither they come and they shall know that I am the LORD 17 ¶ Moreover the word of the LORD came to me saying 18 Son of man eat thy bread with quaking and drink thy water with trembling and with carefulness 19 And say unto the people of the land Thus saith the Lord GOD of the inhabitants of Jerusalem and of the land of Israel They shall eat their bread with carefulness and drink their water with astonishment that her land may be desolate from †Heb. the fuiaâ—â— thereof all that is therein because of the violence of all them that dwell therein 20 And the cities that are inhabited shall be laid waste and the land shall be desolate and ye shall know that I am the LORD 21 ¶ And the word of the LORD came unto me saying 22 Son of man what is that proverb that ye have in the land of Israel saying The days are prolonged and every vision saileth 23 Tell them therefore Thus saith the Lord GOD I will make this proverb to cease and they shall no more use it as a proverb in Israel but say unto them The days are at hand and the effect of every vision 24 For there shall be no more any vain vision nor flattering divination within the house of Israel 25 For I am the LORD I will speak and the word that I shall speak shall come to pass it shall be no more prolonged for in your days O rebellious house will I say the word and will perform it saith the Lord GOD. 26 ¶ Again the word of the LORD came to me saying 27 Son of man behold they of the house of Israel say The vision that he seeth is * 2 Pet. 3.4 for many days to come and he prophesieth of the times that are far off 28 Therefore say unto them Thus saith the Zord GOD There shall none of my words be prolonged any more but the word which I have spoken shall be done saith the Lord GOD. CHAP. XIII 1 There proof of lying prophets 10 and their untempered morter 17 Of prophetesses and their pillows ANd the word of the LORD came unto me saying 2 Son of man prophesie against the prophets of Israel that prophesie and say thou unto †Heb. them that are prophets out of their own hearts them that prophesie out of their own * Jer. 23.16 hearts Hear ye the word of the LORD 3 Thus saith the Lord GOD Wo unto the foolish prophets that †Heb. walk after follow their own spirit ‖ Or and things which they have not seen and have seen nothing 4 O Israel thy prophets are like the foxes in the deserts 5 Ye have not gone up into the ‖ Or breaches gaps neither †Heb. bedeed the bâ—dae made up the hedge for the house of Israel to stand in the battle in the day of the LORD 6 They have seen vanity and lying divination saying The LORD saith and the LORD hath not sent them and they have make others to hope that they would confirm the word 7 Have ye not seen a vain vision and have ye not spoken a lying divination whereas ye say The LORD saith it albeit I have not spoken 8 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Because ye have spoken vanity and seen lies therefore behold I am against you saith the Lord GOD. 9 And mine hand shall be upon the prophets that see vanity and that divine lies they shall not be in the ‖ Or secret or counsel assembly of my people neither shall they be written in the writing of the house of Israel neither shall they enter into the land of Israel and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD. 10 ¶ Because even because they have seduced my people saying * Jer. 6.14 Peace and there was no peace and one built up ‖ Or a sliâ—t â—â—l a wall and lo others daubed it with untempered morter 11 Say unto them which daub it with untempered morter That it shall fall there shall be an overflowing shower and ye O great hailstones shall fall and a stormy wind shall rent it 12 Lo when the wall is falâ— shall it not be said unto you Where is the daubing wherewith ye have daubed it 13 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD I will even rent it with a stormy wind in my fury and there shall be an overflowing shower in mine anger and great hailstones in my fury to consume it 14 So will I break down the wall that ye have daubed with untempered morter and bring it down to the ground so that the foundation thereof shall be discovered and it shall fall and ye shall be consumed in the midst thereof and ye shall know that I am the LORD 15 Thus will I accomplish my wrath upon the wall and upon them that have daubed it with untempered morter and will say unto you The wall is no more neither they that daubed it 16 To wit the prophets of Israel which prophesie concerning

XLII 1 The chambers for the priests 13 The use thereof 19 The measures of the outward court THen he brought me forth into the utter court the way toward the north and he brought me into the chamber that was over against the separate place and which was before the building toward the north 2 Before the length of an hundred cubits was the north-door and the breadth was fifty cubits 3 Over against the twenty cubits which were for the inner court and over against the pavement which was for the utter court was gallery against gallery in three stories 4 And before the chambers was a walk of ten cubits breadth inward a way of one cubit and their doors toward the north 5 Now the upper chambers were shorter for the galleries ‖ Or did eat or these were higher thâ—n these ‖ Or and the building consisted of the lower and the middlemost then the lower and then the middlemost of the building 6 For they were in three stories but had not pillars as the pillars of the courts therefore the building was straitened more thâ—n the lowest and the middlemost from the ground 7 And the wall that was without over against the chambers towards the utter court on the forepart of the chambers the length thereof was fifty cubits 8 For the length of the chambers that were in the utter court was fifty cubits and so before the temple were an hundred cubits 9 And ‖ Or from the place from under these chambers was ‖ Or he that brought me the entry on the east-side ‖ Or as be came as one goeth into them from the utter court 10 The chambers were in the thickness of the wall of the court toward the east over against the separate place and over against the building 11 And the way before them was like the appearance of the chambers which were toward the north as long as they 〈◊〉 as broad as they and all their goings out were both according to their fashions and according to their doors 12 And according to the doors of the chambers that were toward the south was a door in the head of the way even the way directly before the wall toward the east as one entreth into them 13 ¶ Then said he unto me The north-chambers and the south-chambers which are before the separate place they be holy chambers where the priests that approach unto the LORD shall eat the most holy things there shall they say the most holy things and the meat-offering and the sin-offering and the trespass-offering for the place is holy 14 When the priests enter therein then shall they not go out of the holy place into the utter court but there they shall lay their garments wherein they minister for the are holy and shall put on other garments and shall approach to chose things which are for the people 15 Now when he had made an end of measuring the inner house he brought me forth toward the gate whose prospect is toward the east and measured it round about 16 He measured the east †Heb. wind side with the measuring-reed five hundred reeds with the measuring-reed round about 17 He measured the north-side five hundred reeds with the measuring-reed round about 18 He measured the south-side five hundred reeds with the measuring-reed 19 ¶ He turned about to the west-side and measured five hundred reeds with the measuring-reed 20 He measured it by the four sides it had a wall round about five hundred reeds long and five hundred broad to make a separation between the sanctuary and the profane place CHAP. XLIII 1 The returning of the glory of God into the temple 7 The sin of Israel hindred Gods presence 10 The prophet exhorteth them to repentance and observation of the law of the house 13 The measures 18 and the ordinanceâ— of the altar AFterward he brought me to the gate even the gate that looketh toward the east 2 And behold the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east and * Ch. 1.24 his voice was like a noise of many waters and the earth shined with his glory 3 And it was * Ch. 1.4 8.4 according to the appearance of the vision which I saw even according to the vision that I saw ‖ Or when I came to prophesie that the city sroâ—lâ— be destroyed See Ch. 9. â— 5. when I came to destroy the city and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar and I tell upon my face 4 And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east 5 So the spirit took me up and brought me into the inner court and behold the glory of the LORD filled the house 6 And I heard him speaking unto me out of the house and the man stood by me 7 ¶ And he said unto me Son of man the place of my throne and the place of the soles of my feet where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever and my holy name shall the house of Israel no more desile neither they nor their kings by their whoredom nor by the

Shut up alms in thy store-houses and it shall deliver thee from all affliction 13 It shall fight for thee against thine enemies better then a mighty shield and strong spear 14 An honest man is surety for his neighbour but he that is impudent will ‖ Or fail forsake him 15 Forget not the friendship of thy surety for he hath given his life for thee 16 A sinner will overthrow the good estate of his surety 17 And he that is of an unthankful minde will leave him in danger that delivered him 18 Suretiship hath undone many of good estate and shaken them as a wave of the sea mighty men hath it driven from their houses so that they wandred among strange nations 19 A wicked man transgressing the commandments of the Lord shall fall into suretiship and he that undertaketh and followeth other mens business for gain shall fall into suits 20 Help thy neighbour according to thy power and beware that thou thy self fall not into the same 21 The * Chap. 39.26 chief thing for life is water and bread and clothing and an house to cover shame 22 Better is the life of a poor man in a mean cottage then delicate fare in another mans house 23 Be it little or much hold thee contented that thou hear not the reproach of thy house 24 For it is a miserable life to go from house to house for where thou art a stranger thou darest not open thy mouth 25 Thou shalt entertain and feast and have no thanks moreover thou shalt hear bitter words 26 Come thou stranger and furnish a table and feed me of that thou hast ready 27 Give place thou stranger to an honourable man my brother cometh to be lodged and I have need of mine house 28 These things are grievous to a man of understanding the upbraiding of hous-room and reproaching of the lender CHAP. XXX 1 It is good to correct our children 7 and not to cocker them 14 Health is better then wealth 22 Health and life are shortned by grief Of children HE * Prov. 13.24 23.13 that loveth his son causeth him oft to feel the rod that he may have joy of him in the end 2 He that chastiseth his son shall have ‖ Or good by him joy in him and shall rejoyce of him among his ‖ Or kinsfolk acquaintance 3 He that * Deut. 6.7 teacheth his son grieveth the enemy and before his friends he shall rejoyce of him 4 Though his father die yet he is as though he were not dead for he hath left one behinde him that is like himself 5 While he lived he * Psal 128 3 6. saw and rejoyced in him and when he died he was not sorrowful 6 He left behinde him an avenger against his enemies and one that shall requite kindness to his friends 7 He that maketh too much of his son shall binde up his wounds and his bowels will be troubled at every cry 8 An horse not broken becometh head-strong and a childe left to himself will be wilful 9 Cocker thy childe and he shall make thee ‖ Or astonished afraid play with him and he will bring thee to heaviness 10 Laugh not with him lest thou have sorrow with him and lest thou gnash thy teeth in the end 11 * Chap. 7 2◠Give him no liberty in his youth and wink not at his follies 12 Bow down his neck while he is young and beat him on the sides while he is a childe lest he wax stubborn and be disobedient unto thee and so bring sorrow to thine heart 13 Chastise thy son and hold him to labour lest his lewd behaviour be an offence unto thee 14 Better is the poor being sound and strong of constitution Of health then a rich man that is afflicted in his body 15 Health and good estate of body are above all gold and a strong body above infinite wealth 16 There is no riches above a sound body and no joy above the joy of the heart 17 Death is better then a bitter life or continual sickness 18 Delicates poured upon a mouth shut up are as messes of meat set upon a grave 19 What good doeth the offering unto an idol for neither can it eat nor smell so is he that is ‖ Or afflicted persecuted of the Lord. 20 He seeth with his eyes and groaneth as an eunuch that embraceth a virgin and sigheth 21 * Prov. 12.25 15.13 17.22 Give not over thy minde to heaviness and afflict not thy self in thine own counsel 22 The gladness of the heart is the life of man and the ‖ Or exultation joyfulness of a man prolongeth his days 23 Love thine own soul and comfort thy heart remove sorrow far from thee for sorrow hath killed many and there is no profit therein 24 Envy and wrath shorten the life and carefulness bringeth age before the time 25 ‖ Or A noble A cheerful and good heart will have a care of his meat and diet CHAP. XXXI 1 Of the desire of riches 12 Of moderation and excess in eating or drinking wine WAtching for * 1 Tim. 6.9 10. riches consumeth the flesh and the care thereof driveth away sleep 2 Watching care will not let a man slumber as a sore disease breaketh sleep 3 The rich hath great labour in gathering riches together and when he resteth he is filled with his delicates 4 The poor laboureth in his poor estate and when he leaveth off he is still needy 5 He that loveth gold shall not be justified and he that followeth corruption shall have enough thereof 6 * Chap. 8.2 Gold hath been the ruine of many and their destruction was present 7 It is a stumbling-block unto them that sacrifice unto it and every fool shall be taken therewith 8 * Luke 6.24 Blessed is the rich that is found without blemish and hath not gone after gold 9 Who is he and we will call him blessed for wonderful things hath he done among his people 10 Who hath been tried thereby and found perfect then let him glory Who might offend and hath not offended or done evil and hath not done it 11 His goods shall be established and the congregation shall declare his alms 12 If thou sit at a bountiful table * Ps 141.4 Prov. 23.1 2 3. †Gr. open not thy throat upon it be not greedy upon it and say not There is much meet on it 13 Remember that a wicked eye is an evil thing and what is created more wicked then an eye therefore it weepeth ‖ Or before every thing that is presented upon every occasion 14 Stretch not thine hand whithersoever it looketh and thrust it not with him into the dish 15 Judge of thy neighbour by thyself and be discreet in every
temple 3 In his days the * 1 King 7.23 cistern to receive water being in compass as the sea was covered with plates of brass 4 He took care of the temple that it should not fall and fortified the city against besieging 5 How was he honoured in the midst of the people in his coming out of †Gr. the house of the â—â—il the sanctuary 6 He was as the morning star in the midst of a cloud and as the moon at the full 7 As the sun shining upon the temple of the most High and as the rainbowe giving light in the bright clouds 8 And as the flower of roses in the spring of the year as lilies by the rivers of waters and as the branches of the frankincense tree in the time of summer 9 As fire and incense in the censer and as a vessel of beaten gold set with all manner of precious stones 10 And as a fair olive-tree budding forth fruit and as a cypress tree which groweth up to the clouds 11 When he put on the robe of honour and was clothed with the perfection of glory when he went up to the holy altar he made the garment of holiness honourable 12 When he took the portions out of the priests hands he himself stood by the hearth of the altar compassed with his brethren round about as a young cedar in Libanus and as palm-trees compassed they him round about 13 So were all the sons of Aaron in their glory and the oblations of the Lord in their hands before all the congregation of Israel 14 And finishing the service at the altar that he might adorn the offering of the most high Almighty 15 He stretched out his hand to the cup and poured of the bloud of the grape he poured out at the foot of the altar a sweet-smelling savour unto the most high King of all 16 Then shouted the sons of Aaron and sounded the ‖ Or trumpets beacon forth with the 〈◊〉 silver trumpets and made a great noise to be heard for a remembrance before the most High 17 Then all the people together hasted and fell down to the earth upon their faces to worship their Lord God almighty the most High 18 The singers also sang praises with their voices with great variety of sounds was there made sweet melody 19 And the people besought the Lord the most High by prayer before him that is merciful till the solemnity of the Lord was ended and they had finished his service 20 Then he went down and lifted up his hands over the whose congregation of the children of Israel to give the blessing of the Lord with his lips and to rejoyce in his name 21 And they bowed themselves down to worship the second time that they might receive a blessing from the most High 22 Now therefore bless ye the God of all which onely doth wondrous things every where which exalteth our days from the womb and dealeth with us according to his mercy 23 He grant us joyfulness of heart and that peace may be in our days in Israel for ever 24 That he would confirm his mercy with us and deliver us at his time 25 There be two manner of nations which my heart abhorreth and the third is no nation 26 They that sit upon the mountain of Samaria and they that dwell amongst the Philistines and that foolish people that dwell in Sichem 27 Jesus the son of Sirach of Jerusalem hath written in this book the instruction of understanding and knowledge who out of his heart poured forth wisdom 28 Blessed is he that shall be exercised in these things and he that sayeth them up in his heart shall become wise 20 For if he do them he shall be strong to all things for the light of the Lord leadeth him who giveth wisdom to the godly Blesses be the Lord forever Amen amen CHAP. LI. ¶ A prayer of Jesus the son of Sirach I Will thank thee O Lord and King and praise thee O God my Saviour I do give praise unto thy name 2 For thou art my defender and helper and hast preserved my body from destruction and from the snare of the slandrous tongue and from the lips that forge lies and hast been mine helper against mine adversaries 3 And hast delivered me according to the multitude of thy mercies and greatness of thy name from †Gr. the gnashing of the teeth the teeth of them that were ready to devour me and out of the hands of such as sought after my life and from the manifold afflictions which I had 4 From the choking of fire on every side and from the mids of the fire which I kindled not 5 From the depth of the besly of hell from an unclean tongue and from sying words 6 By an accusation to the king from an unrighteous tongue my soul drew near even unto death my life was near to the hell beneath 7 They compassed me on every side and there was no man to help me I looked for the succour of men but there was none 8 Then thought I upon thy mercy O Lord and upon thy acts of old how thou deliverest such as wait for thee and savest them out of the hands of the enemies 9 Then lifted I up my supplication from the earth and prayed for deliverance from death 10 I called upon the Lord the Father of my Lord that he would not leave me in the days of my trouble and in the time of the proud when there was no help 11 I will praise thy name continually and will sing praise with thanksgiving and so my prayer was heard 12 For thou savedst me from destruction and deliveredst me from the evil time therefore will I give thanks and praise thee and bless thy name O Lord. 13 When I was yet young or ever I ‖ Or went astray went abroad I desired wisdom openly in my prayer 14 I prayed for her before the temple and will seek here out even to the end 15 Even from the flower till the grape was ripe hath my heart delighted in her my foot went the right way from my youth up sought I after her 16 I howed down mine ear a little and received her and gat much learning 17 I profited therein therefore will I ascribe the glory unto him that giveth me wisdom 18 For I purposed to do after her and earnestly I followed that which is good so shall I not be confounded 19 My soul hath wrestled with her and in my doings I was exact I stretched forth my hands to the heaven above and bewailed my ignorances of her 20 ‖ Or I got understanding I directed my soul unto her and I found her in pureness I have had my heart joyned with her from the beginning therefore shall I not be forsaken 21 My ‖ Or bowâ—lâ— heart was troubled in seeking her therefore have I gotten a good possession 22 The Lord hath given me a tongue for my reward and I will
