III. 1 Christ is more worthy then Moses 7 therefore if we beleeve not in him we shall be more worthy punishment then hard-hearted Israel WHerefore holy brethren partakers of the heavenly calling consider the Apostle and high Priest of our profession Christ Jesus 2 Who was faithful to him that †Gr. made 1 Sam. 12.6 appointed him as also * Num. 12.7 Moses was faithful in all his house 3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory then Moses in as much as he who hath builded the house hath more honour then the house 4 For every house is builded by some man but he that built all things is God 5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house as a servant for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after 6 But Christ as a Son over his own house whose house are we if we hold fast the confidence the rejoycing of the hope firm unto the end 7 Wherefore as the holy Ghost saith * Psal 95.7 Chap. 4.7 To day if ye will hear his voice 8 Harden not your hearts as in the provocation in the day of temptation in the wilderness 9 When your fathers tempted me proved me and saw my works fourty years 10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation and said They do alway err in their heart and they have not known my ways 11 So I sware in my wrath †Gr. IV. 1 The rest of Christians is attained by faith 12 The power of Gods word 14 By our high priest Jesus the Son of God subject to infirmities but not sin 16 we must and may go boldly to the throne of grace LEt us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entring into his rest any of you should seem to come short of it 2 For unto us was the gospel preached as well as unto them but †Gr. the word of hearing the word preached did not profit them ‖ Or because they were not united by faith to not being mixed with faith in them that heard it 3 For we which have beleeved do enter into rest as he said * Psal 95.11 As I have sworn in my wrath If they shall enter into my rest although the works were finished from the foundation of the world 4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise * Gen. 2 2. heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the kings meat nor with the wine which he drank therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself 9 Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs 10 And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel I fear my lord the king who hath appointed your meat and your drink for why should he see your faces †Heb. sadder worse liking then the children which are of your ‖ Or term or continuance sort then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king 11 Then said Daniel to ‖ Or the sieward Melzar whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel Hananiah Mishael and Azariah 12 Prove thy servants I beseech thee ten days and let them give us †Heb. of pulse pulse †Heb. that we may eat c. to eat and water to drink 13 Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the kings meat and as thou seest deal with thy servants 14 So he consented to them in this matter and proved them ten days 15 And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh then all the children which did eat the portion of the kings meat 16 Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat and the wine that they should drink and gave them pulse 17 ¶ As for these four children God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom and ‖ Or be made Daniel understand Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams 18 Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar 19 And the king commauned with them and among them all was found none like Daniel Hananiah Mishael and Azariah therefore stood they before the king 20 And in all matters of †Heb. wisdom of understanding wisdom and understanding that the king enquired of them he found them ten times better then all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm 21 And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus CHAP. II. 1 Nebuchadnezzar forgetting his dream requireth it of the Caldeans by promises and threatnings 10 They acknowledging their inability are judged to die 14 Daniel obtaining some respite findeth the dream 19 He blesseth God â—4 He staying the decree is brought to the king 31 The dream 36 The interpretation 4â— Daniels advancement ANd in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams wherewith his spirit was troubled and his sleep brake from him 2 Then the king commanded to call the magicians and the astrologers and the sorcerers and the Caldeans for to shew the king his dreams so they came and stood before the king 3 And the king said unto them I have dreamed a dream and my spirit was troubled to know the dream 4 Then spake the Caldeans to the king in Syriack * Ch. 3.9 O king live for ever tell thy servants the dream we will shew the interpretation 5 The king answered and said to the Caldeans The thing is gone from me it ye will not make known unto me the dream with the interpretation thereof ye shall be * Ch. 3.29 †Câ—ld maâ—e pieces cut in pieces and your houses shall be made a dunghil 6 But it ye shew the dream and the interpretation thereof ye shall receive of me gifts and ‖ Or see ch 5. â—7 rewards and great honour therefore shew me the dream and the interpretation thereof 7 They answered again and said Let the king tell his servants the dream and we will shew the interpretation of it 8 The king answered and said I know of certainty that ye would †Cald. buy gain the time because ye see the thing is gone from me 9 But if ye will not make known unto me the dream there is but one decree for you for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me till the time be changed therefore tell me the dream and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof 10 ¶ The Caldeans answered before the king and said There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the kings matter therefore there is no king lord nor ruler that asked such things at any magician or astrologer or Caldean 11 And it is a rare thing that the king requireth and there is none other that can shew it before the king except the gods whose dwelling is not with flesh 12 For this cause the king was angry and very furious and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon 13 And the decree went forth that the wise men should be slain and they sought Daniel and his fellows to be slain 14 ¶ Then Daniel †Câ—â—d â—â—swered answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the ‖ Or chief marshal †Câ—ld chief of the executioners or slaughter-men captain of the kings guard which was gone forth to slay the wise-men of Babylon 15 He answered and said to Arioch the kings captain Why is the decree so hasty from the king Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel 16 Then Daniel went in and desired of the king that he would give him time and that he would shew the king the interpretation 17 Then Daniel went to his house and made the thing known to Hananiah Mishael and Azariah his companions 18 That they would desire mercies †Cald. from before God of the God of heaven concerning this secret ‖ Or that they should not destroy Daniel c. that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon 19 ¶ Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night-vision then Daniel blessed the God of heaven 20 Daniel answered and said * Ps â—13 2 115.18 Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever for wisdom and might are his 21 And be changeth the times and the seasons he removeth kings and setteth up kings he giveth wisdom unto the wise and knowledge to them that know understanding 22 He revealeth the deep and secret things he knoweth what is in the darkness and the light dwelleth with him 23 I thank thee and praise thee O thou God of my fathers who hast given me wisdom and might and hast made known unto me now what we desired of thee for thou hast now made known unto us the kings matter 24 ¶ Therefore Daniel went in unto Arioch whom the king had ordained to destroy the wise men of Babylon he went and said thus unto him Destroy not the wise men of Babylon bring me in before the king and I will shew unto the king the interpretation 25 Then Arioch brought
of the field had shadow under it and the fowls of the heaven dwelt in the boughs thereof and all flesh was fâ—d of it 13 I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed and behold a watcher and an holy one came down from heaven 14 He cried †Cald. with might aloud and faid thus How down the tree and cut off his branches shake off his leaves and scatter his fruit let the beasts get away from under it and the fowls from his branches 15 Nevertheless leave the stump of his roots in the earth even with a band of iron and brass in the tender grass of the field and let it be wet with the dew of heaven and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth 16 Let his heart be changed from mans and let a beasts heart be given unto him and let seven times pass over him 17 This matter is by the decree of the watchers and the demand by the word of the holy ones to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men and giveth it to whomsoever he will and setteth up over it the basest of men 18 This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen now thou O Belteshazzar declare the interpretation thereof forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation but thou art able for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee 19 ¶ Then Daniel whose name was Belteshazzar was astonied for one hour and his thoughts troubled him the king spake and said Belteshazzar let not the dream or the interpretation thereof trouble thee Belteshazzar answered and said My lord the dream be to them that hate thee and the interpretation thereof to thine enemies 20 The tree that thou sawest which grew was strong whose height reached unto the heaven and the â—ight thereof to all the earth 21 Whose leaves were fair and the fruit thereof much and in it was meat for all under which the beasts of the field dwelt and upon whose branches the fowls of the heaven had their habitation 22 It is thou O king that art grown and become strong for thy greatness is grown and reacheth unto heaven and thy dominion to the end of the earth 23 And whereas the king saw a watcher and an holy one coming down from heaven and saying Hew the tree down and destroy it yet leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth even with a band of iron and brass in the tender grass of the field and let it be wet with the dew of heaven and let his portion be be sure unto thee after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule 27 Wherefore O king let my counsel be acceptable unto thee and break off thy sins by righteousness and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor if it may be ‖ Or an beaâ—ing of thineerroâ—â— a lengthning of thy tranquillity 28 ¶ All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar 29 At the end of twelve moneths he walked ‖ Or upon in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon 30 The king spake and said Is not this great Babylon that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power and for the honour of my majesty 31 While the word was in the kings mouth there fell a voice from heaven saying O king Nebuchadnezzar to thee it is spoken The kingdom is departed from thee 32 And they shall drive thee from men and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen and seven times shall pass over thee until thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men and giveth it to whomsoever he will 33 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar and he was driven from men and did eat grass as oxen and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hairs were grown like eagles feathers and his nails like birds claws 34 And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lift up mine eyes unto heaven and mine understanding returned unto me and I blessed the most High and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever whose dominion is * Ch. 7.14 Mic. 4.7 Lu. 1.33 an everlasting dominion and his kingdom is from generation to generation 35 And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth and none can stay his hand or say unto him * Job 9.12 If. 45.9 What doest thou 36 At the same time my reason returned unto me and for the glory of my kingdom mine honour and brightness returned unto me and my counsellours and my lords sought unto me and I was established in my kingdom and excellent majesty was added unto me 37 Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of heaven all whose works are truth and his ways judgement and those that walk in pride he is able to abase CHAP. V. 1 Belshazzars impious â—east 5 A â—and-writing unknown to the magicians troubleth the king 10 At the commendation of the queen Daniel is brought 17 He reproving the king of pride and idolatry 25 readeth and interpreteth the writing 30 The monarchy is translated to the Medes BElshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords and drank wine before the thousand 2 Belshazzar whiles he tasted the wine commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had †Cald. brought forth taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem that the king and his princes his wives and his concubines might drink therein 3 Then they brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of God which was at Jerusalem and the king and his princes his wives and his concubines drank in them 4 They drunk wine and praised the gods of gold and of silver of brass of iron of wood and of stone 5 ¶ In the same hour came forth fingers of a mans hand and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the kings palace and the king saw the

III. 1 Children must honour and help both their parents 21 We may not desire to know all things 26 The incorrigible must needs perish 30 Alms are rewarded HEar me your father O children and do thereafter that ye may be safe 2 For the Lord hath given * Ex. 20.12 Deut. 5.6 the father honour over the children and hath confirmed the ‖ Or judgement authority of the mother over the sons 3 Whoso honoureth his father maketh an atonement for his sins 4 And he that honoureth his mother is as one that layeth up treasure 5 Whoso honoureth his father shall have joy of his own children and when he maketh his prayer he shall be heard 6 He that honoureth his father shall have a long life and he that is obedient unto the Lord shall be a comfort to his mother 7 He that feareth the Lord will honour his father and will do service unto his parents as to his masters 8 * Verse 2. Honour thy father and mother both in word and deed that a blessing may come upon thee from them 9 For the * Gen. 27.27 Deut. 33.1 blessing of the father establisheth the houses of children but the curse of the mother rooteth out foundations 10 Glory not in the dishonour of thy father for thy fathers dishonour is no glory unto thee 11 For the glory of a man is from the honour of his father and a mother in dishonour is a reproach unto the children 12 My son help thy father in his age and grieve him not as long as he liveth 13 And if his understanding fail have patience with him and despise him not when thou art ‖ Or in all thine ability in thy full strength 14 For the relieving of thy father shall not be forgotten and in stead of sins it shall be added to build thee up 15 In the day of thine affliction it shall be remembred thy sins also shall melt away as the ice in the fair warm weather 16 He that forsaketh his father is as a blasphemer and he that angreth his mother is cursed of God 17 My son go on with thy business in meekness so shalt thou be beloved of him that is approved 18 * Phil. 2.3 The greater thou art the more humble thy self and thou shalt finde favour before the Lord. 19 Many are in high place and of renown but * Psal 25.9 14. mysteries are revealed unto the meek 20 For the power of the Lord is great and he is honoured of the lowly 21 * Prov. 25.27 Rom. 12.3 Seek not out the things that are too hard for thee neither search the things that are above thy strength 22 But what is commanded thee think thereupon with reverence for it is not needful for thee to see with thine eyes the things that are in secret 23 Be not curious in unnecessary matters for mo things are shewed unto thee then men understand 24 For many are deceived by their own vain opinion and an evil suspicion hath overthrown their judgement 25 Without eyes thou shalt want light profess not the knowledge thereof that thou hast not 26 A stubborn heart shall fare evil at the last and he that loveth danger shall perish therein 27 An obstinate heart shall be laden with sorrows and the wicked man shall heap sin upon sin 28 ‖ Or The proud man is not healed by his punishment In the punishment of the proud there is no remedy for the plant of wickedness hath taken root in him 29 The heart of the prudent will understand a parable and an attentive ear is the desire of a wise man 30 * Ps 41.1 c. IV. 1 We may not despise the poor or fatherless 11 but seek for wisdom 20 not be ashamed of some things nor gainsay the truth 30 nor be as lions in our houses MY son defraud not the poor of his living and make not the needy eyes to wait long 2 Make not an hungry soul sorrowful neither provoke a man in his distress 3 Add not more trouble to an heart that is vexed and defer not to give to him that is in need 4 Reject not the supplication of the afflicted neither turn away thy face from a poor man 5 Turn not away thine eye from ‖ Or him that asketh the needy and give him none occasion to curse thee 6 For if he curse thee in the bitterness of his soul his prayer shall be heard of him that made him 7 Get thy self the love of the congregation and bow thy head to a great man 8 Let it not grieve thee to bow down thine ear to the poor and give him a friendly answer with meekness 9 Deliver him that suffereth wrongs from the hand of the oppressour and be not faint-hearted when thou sittest in judgement 10 Be as a father unto the fatherless and in stead of an husband unto their mother so shalt thou be as the son of the most High and he shall love thee more then thy mother doth 11 Wisdom exalteth her children and layeth hold of them that seek her 12 He that loveth her loveth life and they that seek to her early shall be filled with joy 13 He that holdeth her fast shall inherit glory and wheresoever she entreth the Lord will bless 14 They that serve her shall minister ‖ Or in the sanctuary to the holy One and them that love her the Lord doth love 15 Whoso giveth ear unto her shall judge the nations and he that attendeth unto her shall dwell securely 16 If a man commit himself unto her he shall inherit her and his generation shall hold her in possession 17 For at the first she will walk with him by crooked ways and bring fear and dread upon him and torment him with her discipline until she may trust his soul and try him by her laws 18 Then will she return the straight way unto him and comfort him and shew him her secrets 19 But if he go wrong she will forsake him and give him over to his own ruine 20 Observe the opportunity and beware of evil and be not ashamed when it concerneth thy soul 21 For there is a shame that bringeth sin and there is a shame which is glory and grace 22 Accept no person against thy soul and let not the reverence of any man cause thee to fall 23 And refrain not to speak †Or in time of
be blameless the husband of one wife vigilant sober ‖ Or modest of good behaviour given to hospitality apt to teach 3 ‖ Or Not ready to quarrel and offer wrong as one in wine Not given to wine no striker not greedy of filthy lucre but patient not a brawler not covetous 4 One that ruleth well his own house having his children in subjection with all gravity 5 For if a man know not how to rule his own house how shall he take care of the church of God 6 Not I a novice lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil 7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil 8 Likewise must the deacons be grave not double-tongued not given to much wine not greedy of filthy lucre 9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience 10 And let these also first be proved then let them use the office of a deacon being found blameless 11 Even to must their wives be grave not slanderers sober faithful in all things 12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife ruling their children and their own houses well 13 For they that have ‖ Or ministreâ—â— used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus 14 These things write I unto thee hoping to come unto thee shortly 15 But if I tarry long that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God which is the church of the living God the pillar and ‖ Or stay ground of the truth 16 And without controversie great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh justified in the Spirit seen of angels preached unto the Gentiles beleeved on in the world received up into glory CHAP. IV. 1 He foretelleth that in the latter times there shall be a departure from the faith 6 And to the end that Timothy might not fail in doing his duty be furnisheth him with divers precepts belonging thereto NOw the Spirit speaketh expresly that * 2 Tim. 3.1 in the latter times some shall depart from the saith giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisie having their conscience seared with a hot iron 3 Forbidding to marry and commanding to abstain from meats which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which beleeve and know the truth 4 For every creature of God is good and nothing to be refused if it be received with thanksgiving 5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer 6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine whereunto thou hast attained 7 But refuse profane and old wives fables and exercise thy self rather unto godliness 8 For bodily exercise profiteth ‖ Or for a little time little but godliness is profitable unto all things having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation 10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach because we trust in the living God who is the Saviour of all men specially of those that beleeve 11 These things command and teach 12 Let no man despise thy youth but be thou an example of the beleevers in word in conversation in charity in spirit in faith in purity 13 Till I come give attendance to reading to exhortation to doctrine 14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee which was given thee by prophesie with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery 15 Meditate upon these things give thy self wholly to them that thy profiting may appear ‖ Or in all things to all 16 Take heed unto thy self and unto thy doctrine continue in them for in doing this thou shalt both save thy self and them that hear thee CHAP. V. 1 Rules to be observed in reproving 3 Of widows 17 Of elders 23 A precept for Timothies health 24 Some mens sins go before unto judgement and some mens do follow after REbuke not an elder but intreat him as a father and the younger men as brethren 2 The elder women as mothers the younger as sisters with all purity 3 Honour widows that are widows indeed 4 But if any widow have children or nephews let them learn first to shew ‖ Or kindness piety at home and to requite their parents for that is good and acceptable before God 5 Now she that is a widow indeed and desolate trusteth in God and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day 6 But she that liveth ‖ Or delicately in pleasure is dead while she liveth 7 And these things give in charge that they may be blameless 8 But if any provide not for his own and specially for those of his own ‖ Or kindred house he hath denied the faith and is worse then an infidel 9 Let not a widow be ‖ Or chosen taken into the number under threescore years old having been the wife of one man 10 Well reported of for good works if she have brought up children if she have lodged strangers if she have washed the saints feet if she have relieved the afflicted if she have diligently followed every good work 11 But the younger widows refuse for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ they will marry 12 Having damnation because they have cast off their first faith 13 And withal they learn to be idle wandring about from house to house and not onely idle but tattlers also and busie-bodies speaking things which they ought not 14 I will therefore that the younger women marry bear children guide the house give none occasion to the adversary †Gr. for their railing to speak reproachfully 15 For some are already turned aside after Satan 16 If any man or woman that beleeveth have widows let them relieve them and let not the church be charged that it may relieve them that are widows indeed 17 * 1 Cor. 9 14. Gal. 6.6 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour especially they who labour in the word and doctrine 18 For the scripture saith * Deut 25.4 Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn and * Marth 10.10 The labourer is worthy of his reward 19 Against an elder receive not an accusation but ‖ Or under before two or three witnesses 20 Them that sin rebuke before all that others also may fear 21 I charge thee before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels that thou observe these things ‖ Or without prejudice without preferring one before another doing nothing by partiality 22 Lay hands suddenly on no man neither be partaker

IV. 2 John seeth the throne of God in heaven 4 The four and twenty elders 6 The four beasts full of eves before and behinde 10 The elders lay down their crowns and worship him that sat on the throne AFter this I looked and behold a door was opened in heaven and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me which said Come up hither and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter 2 And immediately I was in the spirit and behold a throne was set in heaven and one sat on the throne 3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper a sardine stone there was a rainbowe round about the throne in sight like unto an emerald 4 And round about the throne were four and twenty seats and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting clothed in white raiment and they had on their heads crowns of gold 5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thundrings and voices And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne which are the seven Spirits of God 6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal And in the midst of the throne and round about the throne were four beasts full of eyes before and behinde 7 And the first beast was like a lion and the second beast like a calf and the third beast had a face as a man and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle 8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him and they were full of eyes within and †Gr. they have no rest they rest not day and night saying * Isa 6.3 Holy holy holy Lord God Almighty which was and is is to come 9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne who liveth for ever and ever 10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne and worship him that liveth for ever and ever and cast their crowns before the throne saying 11 * Ch. 5.12 Thou art worthy O Lord to receive glory and honour and power for thou hast created all things and for thy pleasure they are and were created CHAP.
