worship_n as_o fast_v and_o prayer_n to_o be_v a_o cloak_n to_o cover_v their_o wickedness_n thou_o be_v so_o far_o from_o sanctify_a god_n name_v that_o thou_o pollute_a god_n name_v thou_o do_v what_o in_o thou_o lie_v for_o to_o cast_v even_o dirt_n in_o the_o face_n of_o god_n himself_o that_o do_v so_o the_o second_o base_a end_n be_v to_o subject_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n to_o the_o praise_n of_o man_n as_o to_o perform_v duty_n of_o god_n worship_n for_o the_o esteem_n of_o man_n and_o because_o we_o shall_v be_v well_o think_v of_o take_v heed_n of_o this_o you_o young_a one_o and_o other_o you_o will_v fain_o be_v esteem_v well_o of_o by_o those_o that_o you_o live_v withal_o it_o be_v a_o desirable_a thing_n to_o have_v a_o good_a esteem_n from_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a but_o take_v heed_n that_o you_o do_v not_o subject_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n to_o this_o indeed_o it_o may_v be_v a_o encouragement_n to_o you_o as_o david_n say_v psal_n 52._o 9_o this_o be_v good_a before_o thy_o saint_n david_n do_v encourage_v â—â—â—self_n to_o praise_n god_n because_o it_o be_v good_a before_o god_n saint_n and_o i_o confess_v it_o may_v be_v a_o encouragement_n because_o holy_a duty_n be_v good_a before_o god_n saint_n but_o take_v heed_n that_o this_o be_v not_o thy_o high_a end_n that_o thou_o aim_v at_o and_o that_o which_o carry_v thou_o that_o regard_n take_v heed_n of_o that_o know_v that_o now_o thou_o do_v not_o worship_n god_n but_o thou_o worship_v man_n thou_o do_v make_v the_o praise_n of_o man_n to_o be_v thy_o god_n for_o whatsoever_o thou_o do_v lift_v up_o in_o the_o high_a place_n that_o be_v thy_o god_n whatsoever_o it_o be_v therefore_o if_o thou_o lifte_v up_o the_o praise_n of_o man_n and_o make_v that_o they_o end_v thou_o make_v that_o thy_o god_n and_o so_o thou_o be_v a_o worshipper_n of_o man_n but_o not_o a_o worshipper_n of_o god_n three_o take_v heed_n of_o make_v self_n thy_o end_n there_o be_v may_v expect_v to_o receive_v some_o good_a to_o ourselves_o and_o we_o may_v be_v encourage_v to_o the_o duty_n by_o the_o expectation_n of_o good_a to_o ourselves_o yet_o we_o must_v look_v high_a we_o must_v look_v at_o the_o honour_n and_o praise_n of_o god_n that_o the_o name_n of_o the_o bless_a god_n may_v be_v honour_v now_o i_o be_o go_v to_o prayer_n oh_o that_o i_o may_v pray_v so_o as_o i_o may_v lift_v up_o god_n name_n i_o be_o go_v to_o hear_v oh_o that_o i_o may_v hear_v so_o as_o god_n may_v be_v honour_v by_o my_o hear_n it_o be_v this_o that_o carry_v i_o on_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o make_v i_o rise_v ready_o and_o to_o go_v forth_o cheerful_o i_o hope_v that_o god_n may_v have_v some_o honour_n by_o my_o hear_v this_o day_n and_o god_n know_v that_o this_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o i_o aim_v at_o i_o do_v not_o come_v for_o company_n nor_o to_o be_v see_v of_o man_n neither_o do_v i_o come_v mere_o to_o satisfy_v my_o own_o conscience_n other_o go_v and_o hear_v such_o truth_n of_o god_n as_o do_v good_a to_o their_o soul_n and_o if_o i_o shall_v neglect_v they_o mere_o for_o my_o own_o ease_n my_o conscience_n will_v not_o let_v i_o be_v quiet_a howsoever_o there_o be_v many_o who_o conscience_n will_v be_v quiet_a enough_o though_o they_o lose_v a_o opportunity_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n but_o yet_o there_o be_v other_o who_o conscience_n can_v do_v so_o their_o conscience_n will_v tell_v they_o when_o they_o be_v lie_v and_o turn_v themselves_o upon_o their_o bed_n how_o do_v you_o know_v but_o that_o god_n have_v something_o to_o speak_v to_o thy_o heart_n this_o morning_n that_o may_v never_o be_v speak_v to_o thy_o heart_n at_o any_o other_o time_n therefore_o they_o can_v be_v at_o quiet_a except_o they_o attend_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n but_o still_o this_o be_v not_o enough_o mere_o to_o satisfy_v conscience_n thy_o main_a end_n it_o must_v be_v that_o thou_o may_v this_o day_n know_v some_o part_n of_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n that_o god_n may_v speak_v to_o thy_o heart_n that_o so_o thou_o may_v be_v sit_v to_o honour_v the_o name_n of_o god_n that_o thou_o may_v be_v enable_v to_o live_v to_o his_o honour_n the_o week_n follow_v so_o much_o the_o better_o as_o in_o this_o manner_n thy_o thought_n shall_v be_v lord_n i_o find_v a_o drossy_a carnal_a heart_n i_o be_o busy_a in_o the_o world_n in_o the_o week_n time_n and_o i_o find_v that_o my_o heart_n be_v sully_v and_o defile_v with_o the_o business_n of_o the_o world_n and_o entangle_v but_o lord_n thou_o have_v appoint_v thy_o sabbath_n and_o word_n to_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o sanctify_v my_o heart_n and_o to_o cleanse_v it_o oh_o lord_n communicate_v thy_o grace_n to_o my_o soul_n through_o thy_o ordinance_n upon_o this_o day_n that_o so_o i_o may_v be_v enable_v the_o week_n follow_v the_o better_a to_o live_v to_o thy_o honour_n lord_n i_o come_v into_o thy_o presence_n to_o that_o end_n be_v most_o potent_a with_o god_n as_o now_o a_o stranger_n can_v prevail_v in_o any_o petition_n so_o as_o a_o familiar_a friend_n can_v thus_o my_o brethren_n when_o stranger_n come_v into_o god_n presence_n god_n do_v not_o so_o much_o regard_v they_o but_o when_o his_o familiar_n come_v into_o his_o presence_n the_o saint_n of_o god_n that_o keep_v close_o with_o he_o in_o constant_a god_n death_n then_o be_v joyful_a to_o those_o that_o converse_v with_o he_o that_o reverend_a divine_a that_o be_v now_o with_o god_n doctor_n preston_n when_o he_o be_v to_o die_v he_o have_v now_o first_o for_o the_o word_n sacrament_n i_o confess_v we_o have_v not_o that_o word_n in_o all_o the_o scripture_n as_o neither_o have_v we_o the_o word_n trinity_n and_o divers_a other_o word_n which_o minister_n make_v use_v of_o to_o set_v forth_o the_o mystery_n of_o religion_n by_o but_o yet_o it_o be_v useful_a to_o consider_v the_o meaning_n why_o minister_n in_o the_o church_n have_v give_v this_o name_n unto_o those_o sing_v and_o seal_v that_o the_o church_n receive_v sacrament_n be_v to_o hallow_v a_o thing_n or_o to_o dedicate_v because_o in_o the_o sacrament_n there_o be_v outward_a thing_n that_o be_v make_v holy_a for_o holy_a and_o spiritual_a end_n second_o we_o ourselves_o do_v as_o it_o where_o hallow_v or_o dedicate_v ourselves_o unto_o god_n in_o the_o use_n of_o these_o ordinance_n that_o one_o reason_n from_o whence_o it_o have_v the_o name_n or_o otherwise_o as_o some_o will_v have_v it_o sacramentum_fw-la because_o it_o be_v to_o be_v receive_v sacrament_n with_o a_o holy_a mind_n and_o therefore_o call_v the_o sacrament_n the_o church_n have_v use_v it_o a_o long_a time_n in_o tertulliar_n time_n which_o be_v above_o fourteen_o hundred_o they_o come_v to_o seal_v a_o covenant_n with_o god_n and_o though_o they_o do_v not_o formal_o and_o explicit_o take_v a_o oath_n yet_o they_o bind_v themselves_o in_o a_o holy_a covenant_n which_o have_v the_o strength_n even_o of_o a_o oath_n in_o it_o for_o a_o solemn_a promise_n to_o the_o high_a god_n have_v the_o strength_n of_o a_o oath_n in_o it_o and_o from_o thence_o they_o be_v call_v by_o these_o name_n srcrament_n but_o that_o for_o the_o word_n that_o you_o may_v understand_v it_o but_o the_o word_n the_o scripture_n use_v to_o set_v out_o this_o sacrament_n by_o that_o that_o now_o i_o be_o speak_v of_o be_v the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n so_o you_o have_v it_o in_o 1_o cor._n 10._o 6._o the_o cup_n of_o blessing_n which_o we_o bless_v be_v it_o not_o communion_n of_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n the_o bread_n which_o we_o break_v be_v it_o not_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n i_o say_v we_o be_v now_o treat_v about_o this_o point_n how_o we_o be_v to_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o that_o which_o the_o scripture_n call_v the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o now_o for_o the_o open_n of_o that_o first_o we_o must_v know_v that_o this_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o we_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n in_o this_o or_o otherwise_o it_o will_v not_o come_v up_o to_o our_o point_n and_o then_o we_o shall_v show_v that_o god_n be_v to_o be_v sanctify_v in_o this_o duty_n of_o worship_n and_o then_o three_o how_o first_o we_o do_v in_o this_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n we_o worship_v god_n for_o when_o we_o be_v come_v to_o receive_v these_o holy_a sign_n and_o seal_n we_o come_v to_o present_v ourselves_o before_o god_n and_o we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n himself_o in_o a_o service_n that_o he_o himself_o require_v of_o we_o in_o a_o holy_a in_o a_o divine_a service_n we_o come_v to_o present_a ourselves_o to_o god_n for_o blessing_n for_o communication_n of_o some_o high_a good_a unto_o we_o than_o pobssy_o those_o creature_n that_o we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o be_v able_a of_o themselves_o to_o convey_v to_o we_o we_o come_v for_o a_o high_a good_a than_o to_o taste_v a_o piece_n of_o bread_n or_o to_o drink_v a_o draught_n of_o wine_n we_o come_v i_o say_v to_o present_v ourselves_o to_o god_n that_o we_o may_v have_v communion_n with_o he_o and_o that_o we_o may_v have_v the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n convey_v unto_o we_o through_o these_o thing_n now_o certain_o this_o be_v a_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n for_o to_o present_v ourselves_o for_o the_o conveyance_n of_o the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n through_o these_o creature_n yea_o that_o we_o may_v have_v communion_n with_o god_n himself_o in_o they_o this_o be_v draw_v nigh_o to_o he_o when_o we_o come_v to_o his_o table_n therefore_o we_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n have_v not_o god_n institute_v and_o appoint_v these_o creature_n bread_n and_o wine_n and_o the_o action_n about_o they_o to_o be_v the_o mean_n of_o conveyance_n of_o blessing_n unto_o we_o it_o have_v be_v will-worship_n for_o we_o to_o have_v expect_v any_o further_a presence_n of_o god_n in_o such_o creature_n than_o there_o be_v in_o the_o
gospel_n concern_v the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n there_o be_v two_o thing_n wherein_o that_o come_v short_a of_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n first_o it_o be_v not_o so_o nigh_o thou_o second_o it_o be_v not_o so_o certain_a to_o assure_v thy_o soul_n what_o shall_v become_v of_o thou_o to_o all_o eternity_n the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n say_v who_o shall_v ascend_v into_o heaven_n etc._n etc._n but_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v nigh_o thou_o even_o in_o thy_o mouth_n and_o in_o thy_o heart_n you_o will_v say_v why_o be_v not_o the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n as_o nigh_o one_o as_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n i_o answer_v the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n you_o hear_v it_o in_o your_o ear_n but_o it_o be_v not_o write_v in_o the_o heart_n as_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v the_o law_n can_v work_v saving_o upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n to_o bring_v salvation_n those_o that_o be_v mere_o legal_a they_o can_v hear_v the_o duty_n that_o be_v require_v but_o the_o word_n have_v no_o power_n to_o write_v in_o their_o heart_n what_o they_o do_v hear_v but_o now_o when_o you_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o be_v nigh_o you_o even_o in_o your_o very_a heart_n as_o well_o as_o in_o your_o ear_n god_n speak_v in_o it_o and_o it_o come_v into_o your_o heart_n and_o there_o it_o work_v efficacious_o which_o the_o law_n can_v the_o law_n be_v but_o a_o dead_a letter_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n if_o you_o come_v mere_o to_o hear_v the_o law_n preach_v add_v not_o in_o a_o evangelical_n way_n you_o may_v hear_v it_o a_o hundred_o time_n and_o it_o will_v never_o be_v write_v in_o your_o heart_n but_o when_o you_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o gospel_n in_o a_o evangelical_n way_n that_o will_v come_v to_o be_v write_v in_o your_o heart_n so_o that_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v nigh_o you_o but_o what_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o other_o say_v not_o who_o shall_v ascend_v up_o into_o heaven_n &_o c_o the_o meaning_n be_v this_o as_o if_o the_o apostle_n shall_v say_v the_o truth_n be_v while_o you_o have_v no_o other_o but_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n you_o be_v at_o a_o infinite_a uncertainty_n about_o your_o eternal_a estate_n the_o law_n say_v do_v and_o live_v but_o you_o can_v never_o know_v when_o you_o have_v do_v enough_o so_o as_o to_o be_v certain_a that_o you_o be_v well_o for_o eternity_n that_o say_v who_o shall_v ascend_v into_o heaven_n to_o know_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n concern_v i_o whether_o he_o will_v accept_v of_o i_o and_o of_o that_o obedience_n and_o worship_n that_o i_o tender_v up_o to_o he_o who_o shall_v go_v down_o into_o the_o deep_a who_o shall_v go_v down_o to_o hell_n to_o know_v there_o whether_o that_o place_n be_v prepare_v for_o he_o or_o no_o it_o be_v a_o phrase_n that_o only_o express_v a_o uncertainty_n that_o one_o can_v be_v satisfy_v about_o his_o eternal_a estate_n except_o he_o can_v go_v to_o heaven_n and_o there_o see_v and_o read_v god_n book_n and_o so_o discover_v god_n mind_n concern_v he_o or_o go_v down_o to_o hell_n and_o so_o know_v whether_o that_o place_n be_v appoint_v for_o he_o or_o not_o except_o i_o can_v do_v one_o of_o these_o i_o can_v certain_o tell_v mere_o by_o the_o law_n whether_o i_o shall_v go_v to_o heaven_n or_o hell_n as_o you_o that_o be_v merchant_n and_o dealer_n abroad_o you_o be_v at_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o uncertainty_n what_o shall_v become_v of_o your_o estate_n indeed_o if_o i_o can_v send_v one_o over_o to_o the_o indies_n to_o tell_v i_o now_o my_o ship_n prosper_v than_o i_o can_v be_v at_o a_o certainty_n than_o i_o shall_v hear_v whether_o i_o be_v a_o rich_a man_n yea_o or_o no_o but_o except_o i_o can_v do_v such_o a_o thing_n i_o be_o at_o a_o uncertainty_n such_o be_v the_o expression_n here_o as_o if_o a_o poor_a soul_n shall_v say_v i_o will_v fain_o be_v save_v and_o loath_a to_o perish_v eternal_o but_o all_o the_o while_n the_o soul_n remain_v under_o the_o law_n it_o remain_v in_o a_o uncertain_a condition_n but_o now_o say_v he_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v nigh_o thou_o even_o in_o thy_o heart_n and_o that_o be_v the_o word_n that_o we_o preach_v that_o say_v rom._n 10._o 9_o if_o thou_o shall_v confess_v with_o thy_o mouth_n the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o shall_v believe_v in_o thy_o heart_n that_o god_n have_v raise_v he_o from_o the_o dead_a thou_o shall_v be_v save_v as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v this_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o be_v come_v into_o thy_o heart_n do_v assure_v thy_o soul_n of_o thy_o eternal_a estate_n so_o that_o though_o thou_o can_v not_o go_v up_o to_o heaven_n nor_o go_v down_o to_o hell_n yet_o thou_o have_v that_o in_o thy_o heart_n that_o do_v as_o it_o be_v assure_v thou_o that_o thou_o shall_v be_v eternal_o save_v as_o if_o thou_o be_v able_a to_o go_v up_o to_o the_o high_a heaven_n and_o fetch_v news_n from_o thence_o oh_o now_o the_o good_a word_n of_o the_o gospel_n how_o shall_v we_o prize_v it_o and_o keep_v it_o in_o our_o heart_n for_o that_o be_v in_o our_o heart_n that_o will_v assure_v we_o of_o our_o salvation_n to_o all_o eternity_n and_o of_o god_n eternal_a purpose_n to_o do_v thou_o good_a in_o heaven_n you_o will_v account_v it_o a_o great_a happiness_n if_o there_o can_v be_v any_o art_n to_o send_v abroad_o to_o the_o strait_o or_o to_o other_o place_n to_o know_v how_o thing_n fare_v with_o you_o but_o now_o if_o thou_o have_v the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n within_o thou_o if_o that_o prevail_v in_o thy_o soul_n thou_o have_v always_o get_v something_o in_o thy_o heart_n that_o will_v tell_v thou_o how_o thing_n be_v with_o thou_o in_o heaven_n and_o what_o shall_v become_v of_o thou_o for_o all_o eternity_n oh_o who_o will_v not_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o hear_v of_o his_o word_n see_v it_o be_v such_o a_o bless_a word_n wherein_o the_o gospel_n be_v open_v with_o more_o clearness_n than_o it_o have_v be_v to_o many_o of_o our_o forefather_n 2._o it_o be_v a_o certain_a evidence_n of_o your_o election_n in_o thess_n 1._o 3._o 4_o 5._o remember_v without_o cease_v your_o work_n of_o faith_n and_o labour_n of_o love_n and_o patience_n of_o hope_n in_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o our_o father_n know_v brethren_n belove_v your_o election_n of_o god_n why_o for_o our_o gospel_n come_v not_o to_o you_o in_o word_n only_o but_o also_o in_o power_n and_o in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o in_o much_o assurance_n and_o know_v this_o excellency_n there_o be_v in_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o hear_v the_o word_n i_o beseech_v you_o mark_v it_o that_o it_o be_v a_o more_o bless_a thing_n than_o if_o you_o do_v bear_v jesus_n christ_n in_o your_o womb_n you_o that_o be_v woman_n will_v not_o you_o have_v account_v it_o a_o great_a happiness_n if_o christ_n have_v be_v bear_v in_o your_o womb_n now_o if_o thou_o come_v to_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n and_o sanctifie_v god_n name_n in_o it_o thou_o be_v in_o a_o better_a condition_n and_o have_v a_o great_a blessing_n upon_o thou_o than_o if_o thou_o have_v bear_v jesus_n christ_n in_o thy_o womb_n in_o luk_n 11._o 27_o 28._o and_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v as_o he_o speak_v these_o thing_n that_o a_o certain_a woman_n of_o the_o company_n lift_v up_o her_o voice_n and_o say_v unto_o he_o bless_a be_v the_o womb_n that_o bear_v thou_o and_o the_o pap_n which_o thou_o have_v suck_v see_v christ_n and_o what_o gracious_a thing_n
