fickleness_n and_o inconstancy_n of_o the_o people_n nothing_o be_v so_o mutable_a as_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n nothing_o so_o variable_a as_o the_o opinion_n of_o the_o multitude_n observe_v 2._o the_o time_n when_o our_o saviour_n thus_o commend_v john_n not_o in_o the_o time_n of_o his_o prosperity_n and_o greatness_n when_o the_o people_n flock_v after_o he_o and_o herod_n get_v he_o to_o court_n and_o reverence_v he_o but_o when_o the_o giddy_a multitude_n have_v forsake_v he_o and_o he_o be_v fall_v into_o disgrace_n at_o court_n and_o have_v preach_v himself_o into_o a_o prison_n now_o christ_n vindicate_v his_o innocency_n maintain_v his_o honour_n proclaim_v his_o worth_n and_o tell_v the_o people_n that_o the_o world_n be_v not_o worthy_a of_o such_o a_o preacher_n as_o john_n be_v learn_v thence_o that_o christ_n will_v stand_v by_o and_o stick_v fast_o to_o his_o faithful_a minister_n when_o all_o the_o world_n forsake_v they_o let_v the_o world_n slight_a and_o mar_v but_o new_a wine_n must_v be_v put_v into_o new_a bottle_n observe_v here_o 1._o a_o great_a difference_n betwixt_o john_n disciple_n and_o christ_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o fast_v john_n disciple_n imitate_v he_o who_o be_v a_o man_n of_o a_o austere_a life_n and_o much_o give_v to_o fast_v therefore_o be_v say_v to_o come_v neither_o eat_v nor_o drink_v matth._n 11.18_o on_o the_o religion_n as_o the_o holy_a and_o best_a of_o christian_n they_o pray_v they_o fast_o they_o hear_v the_o word_n they_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n they_o do_v yea_o it_o may_v be_v they_o out_o do_v and_o go_v beyond_o the_o sincere_a christian_a in_o external_n duty_n and_o outward_a performance_n obs_n 3._o the_o defensative_a plea_n which_o our_o bless_a saviour_n make_v for_o the_o not_o fast_v of_o his_o disciple_n he_o declare_v that_o it_o be_v neither_o suitable_a to_o they_o nor_o tolerable_a for_o they_o thus_o to_o fast_o at_o present_a not_o suitable_a in_o regard_n of_o christ_n bodily_a presence_n with_o they_o this_o make_v it_o a_o time_n of_o joy_n and_o rejoice_v not_o of_o mourn_v and_o fast_v christ_n be_v the_o bridegroom_n and_o his_o church_n the_o bride_n either_o he_o or_o his_o disciple_n do_v blame_v this_o action_n of_o the_o disciple_n namely_o their_o pluck_n of_o the_o ear_n of_o corn_n on_o the_o sabbath-day_n yet_o note_v first_o it_o be_v and_o pervert_v by_o faction_n or_o interest_n no_o doubt_n john_n disciple_n be_v good_a man_n and_o no_o doubt_n their_o master_n have_v often_o tell_v they_o as_o he_o do_v other_o that_o he_o be_v not_o the_o messiah_n yet_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v their_o own_o master_n when_o they_o apprehend_v he_o to_o speak_v against_o their_o own_o interest_n for_o they_o know_v that_o they_o must_v they_o be_v many_o for_o their_o manner_n of_o their_o operation_n they_o be_v public_o wrought_v in_o the_o sight_n and_o view_n of_o multitude_n of_o people_n to_o free_v they_o from_o all_o suspicion_n of_o fraud_n and_o imposture_n he_o wrought_v they_o before_o his_o enemy_n as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o his_o friend_n and_o follower_n and_o this_o not_o do_v once_o or_o tread_v down_o the_o word_n and_o minister_n be_v the_o same_o but_o this_o proceed_v from_o the_o fickleness_n and_o inconstancy_n of_o the_o people_n nothing_o be_v so_o mutable_a as_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n nothing_o so_o variable_a as_o the_o opinion_n of_o the_o multitude_n observe_v 2._o the_o time_n when_o our_o saviour_n thus_o commend_v john_n when_o he_o be_v cast_v into_o prison_n by_o herod_n not_o when_o he_o be_v in_o prosperity_n when_o the_o people_n flock_v after_o he_o when_o he_o preach_v at_o court_n and_o be_v reverence_v by_o herod_n but_o when_o the_o giddy_a maltitude_n have_v forsake_v he_o when_o he_o be_v disgrace_v at_o court_n and_o have_v preach_v himself_o into_o a_o prison_n now_o it_o be_v that_o christ_n proclaim_v his_o worth_n maintain_v his_o honour_n and_o tell_v the_o people_n that_o the_o world_n be_v not_o worthy_a of_o such_o a_o preacher_n learn_v thence_o that_o christ_n will_v evermore_o stand_v by_o and_o stick_v fast_o unto_o his_o faithful_a minister_n when_o all_o the_o world_n forsake_v they_o let_v the_o world_n slight_a and_o despise_v they_o at_o their_o pleasure_n yet_o christ_n will_v maintain_v their_o honour_n and_o support_v their_o cause_n as_o they_o bear_v a_o faithful_a witness_n to_o christ_n so_o christ_n will_v bear_v witness_n to_o their_o faithfulness_n for_o he_o observe_v 3_o the_o commendation_n itself_o our_o saviour_n commend_v john_n for_o four_o thing_n for_o his_o constancy_n for_o his_o sobriety_n for_o his_o humility_n for_o his_o gospel-ministry_n 1._o for_o his_o constancy_n he_o be_v not_o a_o reed_n shake_v with_o the_o wind_n that_o be_v a_o man_n of_o a_o unstable_a and_o unsettled_a judgement_n but_o fix_v and_o steady_a 2._o for_o his_o sobriety_n austerity_n and_o high_a degree_n of_o mortification_n and_o self-denial_n he_o be_v no_o delicate_a voluptuous_a person_n but_o grave_n sober_a and_o severe_a he_o be_v mortify_v to_o the_o glory_n and_o honour_n to_o the_o ease_n and_o pleasure_n of_o the_o world_n john_n wrought_v no_o miracle_n but_o his_o conversation_n be_v almost_o miraculous_a and_o as_o effectual_a as_o miracle_n to_o prevail_v upon_o the_o people_n 3._o for_o his_o humility_n john_n may_v once_o have_v be_v what_o he_o will_v the_o people_n be_v ready_a to_o cry_v he_o up_o for_o the_o messiah_n the_o christ_n of_o god_n but_o john_n a_o more_o excellent_a ministry_n than_o all_o the_o prophet_n yea_o then_o john_n himself_o the_o excellency_n of_o a_o ministry_n consist_v in_o the_o light_n and_o clearness_n of_o it_o now_o though_o john_n light_n do_v exceed_v all_o that_o go_v before_o he_o yet_o it_o fall_v short_a of_o they_o that_o come_v after_o he_o and_o thus_o he_o that_o be_v least_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o lawful_a but_o necessary_a for_o man_n in_o all_o ordinary_a case_n v._o 22._o and_o he_o say_v to_o his_o disciple_n therefore_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o take_v no_o thought_n for_o your_o life_n
