matter_n of_o so_o great_a consequence_n to_o we_o that_o if_o it_o be_v a_o digression_n it_o be_v very_o pardonable_a for_o many_o devout_a mind_n when_o they_o be_v disturb_v and_o cloud_v with_o melancholy_a be_v affly_v with_o such_o thought_n as_o these_o that_o their_o day_n of_o grace_n be_v past_a that_o god_n have_v swear_v in_o his_o wrath_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o enter_v into_o his_o rest_n and_o therefore_o their_o repentance_n and_o tear_n will_v be_v as_o fruitless_a as_o esau_n be_v which_o can_v not_o obtain_v the_o blessing_n now_o for_o the_o resolve_v this_o question_n i_o shall_v say_v these_o three_o thing_n 1._o that_o the_o day_n of_o grace_n according_a to_o the_o term_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v commensurate_a with_o our_o life_n 2._o that_o notwithstanding_o this_o man_n may_v shorten_v their_o own_o day_n of_o grace_n and_o god_n may_v in_o wrath_n and_o justice_n confirm_v the_o sentence_n 3._o that_o the_o reason_n for_o lengthen_v the_o day_n of_o grace_n together_o with_o our_o life_n do_v not_o extend_v to_o the_o other_o world_n and_o therefore_o death_n must_v put_v a_o final_a period_n to_o it_o 1._o that_o the_o day_n of_o grace_n according_a to_o the_o term_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v commensurate_a with_o our_o life_n and_o there_o need_v no_o other_o proof_n of_o this_o but_o that_o the_o promise_n of_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n be_v make_v to_o all_o true_a penitent_n without_o any_o limitation_n of_o time_n whoever_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o repent_v of_o his_o sin_n he_o shall_v be_v save_v this_o for_o ever_o be_v not_o worse_o furnish_v than_o this_o world_n which_o i_o must_v so_o quick_o leave_v for_o have_v god_n make_v i_o immortal_a and_o provide_v no_o sort_n of_o pleasure_n and_o entertainment_n for_o a_o immortal_a state_n when_o he_o have_v so_o liberal_o furnish_v the_o short_a and_o changeable_a scene_n of_o this_o life_n i_o know_v not_o indeed_o what_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o next_o world_n be_v but_o no_o more_o do_v i_o know_v what_o the_o pleasure_n of_o this_o world_n be_v till_o i_o come_v into_o it_o and_o therefore_o that_o be_v no_o argument_n that_o there_o be_v no_o pleasure_n there_o because_o i_o do_v not_o yet_o know_v they_o and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o pleasure_n there_o sure_o they_o must_v be_v great_a than_o what_o be_v here_o because_o it_o be_v a_o more_o last_a state_n for_o can_v we_o think_v that_o god_n have_v empty_v all_o his_o store_n and_o treasure_n into_o this_o world_n nay_o can_v we_o think_v that_o he_o have_v give_v we_o the_o best_a thing_n first_o where_o we_o can_v only_o just_a taste_n they_o and_o leave_v they_o behind_o we_o which_o be_v to_o excite_v and_o provoke_v a_o appetite_n which_o shall_v be_v restless_a and_o uneasy_a to_o eternity_n no_o sure_o the_o other_o world_n must_v be_v infinite_o a_o more_o happy_a place_n than_o this_o because_o it_o will_v last_v infinite_o long_a the_o divine_a wisdom_n and_o goodness_n have_v certain_o reserve_v the_o best_a thing_n for_o eternity_n for_o as_o eternal_a being_n be_v the_o most_o perfect_a so_o they_o must_v be_v the_o most_o happy_a too_o unless_o we_o can_v separate_v perfection_n and_o happiness_n and_o therefore_o i_o can_v but_o conclude_v that_o there_o be_v great_a pleasure_n that_o there_o be_v a_o happy_a state_n of_o life_n than_o this_o because_o there_o be_v a_o life_n which_o last_v for_o ever_o 2._o this_o will_v natural_o teach_v we_o to_o live_v in_o expectation_n of_o better_a thing_n of_o great_a though_o unknown_a and_o unexperienced_a pleasure_n which_o methinks_v all_o man_n shall_v do_v who_o know_v that_o there_o be_v better_a thing_n to_o be_v have_v and_o that_o they_o must_v go_v into_o that_o state_n where_o these_o better_a thing_n be_v to_o be_v have_v for_o can_v any_o man_n be_v content_v with_o a_o less_o degree_n of_o happiness_n who_o know_v there_o be_v a_o great_a this_o be_v stupidity_n and_o baseness_n of_o spirit_n a_o ignoble_a mind_n which_o be_v not_o capable_a of_o great_a hope_n ambition_n and_o covetousness_n indeed_o be_v ill_a name_n but_o yet_o they_o be_v symptom_n of_o a_o great_a and_o generous_a soul_n and_o be_v excellent_a virtue_n when_o direct_v to_o their_o right_a object_n that_o be_v to_o such_o object_n as_o be_v true_o great_a and_o excellent_a for_o it_o be_v only_o the_o meanness_n of_o the_o object_n which_o make_v they_o vice_n to_o be_v ambitious_a of_o true_a honour_n of_o the_o true_a glory_n and_o perfection_n of_o our_o nature_n be_v the_o very_a principle_n and_o incentive_a of_o virtue_n but_o to_o be_v ambitious_a of_o title_n of_o place_n of_o some_o ceremonious_a respect_n and_o civil_a pageantry_n be_v as_o vain_a and_o little_a as_o the_o thing_n be_v which_o they_o court_v to_o be_v covetous_a of_o true_a and_o real_a happiness_n to_o set_v no_o bound_n nor_o measure_n to_o our_o desire_n or_o pursuit_n of_o it_o be_v true_a greatness_n of_o mind_n which_o will_v take_v up_o with_o nothing_o on_o this_o side_n perfection_n for_o god_n and_o nature_n have_v set_v no_o bound_n to_o our_o desire_n of_o happiness_n but_o as_o it_o be_v in_o natural_a so_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v in_o moral_a agent_n every_o thing_n grow_v till_o it_o come_v to_o its_o maturity_n and_o perfection_n but_o then_o covetousness_n be_v a_o vice_n when_o man_n mistake_v their_o object_n and_o be_v insatiable_a in_o their_o desire_n of_o that_o which_o be_v not_o their_o happiness_n as_o gold_n and_o silver_n house_n and_o land_n what_o be_v more_o than_o we_o want_v and_o more_o than_o we_o can_v use_v can_v be_v the_o happiness_n of_o a_o man._n and_o thus_o it_o be_v on_o the_o other_o hand_n though_o humility_n be_v a_o great_a virtue_n as_o it_o be_v oppose_v to_o earthly_a ambition_n as_o it_o set_v we_o above_o the_o little_a opinion_n and_o courtship_n of_o the_o world_n which_o be_v such_o mean_a thing_n as_o argue_v meanness_n of_o spirit_n to_o stoop_v to_o they_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o humility_n but_o sordidness_n to_o be_v regardless_o of_o true_a honour_n thus_o to_o be_v content_v with_o our_o external_a fortune_n in_o this_o world_n what_o ever_o it_o be_v to_o be_v able_a to_o see_v the_o great_a prosperity_n and_o splendour_n of_o other_o man_n without_o envy_n and_o without_o repine_v at_o our_o own_o meanness_n be_v a_o great_a virtue_n because_o these_o thing_n be_v not_o our_o happiness_n but_o for_o the_o use_n and_o conveniency_n of_o this_o present_a life_n and_o to_o be_v content_v with_o a_o little_a of_o they_o for_o present_a use_n be_v a_o argument_n that_o we_o do_v not_o think_v they_o our_o happiness_n which_o be_v the_o true_a excellency_n of_o this_o virtue_n of_o contentment_n but_o to_o be_v content_v if_o we_o may_v so_o call_v it_o to_o want_v that_o which_o be_v our_o true_a happiness_n or_o any_o degree_n or_o portion_n of_o it_o to_o be_v content_v never_o to_o enjoy_v the_o great_a and_o the_o best_a thing_n be_v a_o vice_n which_o contradict_v the_o natural_a desire_n of_o happiness_n and_o you_o may_v call_v it_o what_o you_o will_v if_o you_o can_v think_v of_o any_o name_n bad_a enough_o for_o it_o it_o be_v the_o most_o despicable_a temper_n in_o the_o world_n to_o have_v no_o sense_n of_o true_a honour_n or_o happiness_n or_o when_o we_o know_v there_o be_v great_a and_o better_a thing_n to_o take_v up_o with_o some_o low_a enjoyment_n and_o therefore_o let_v the_o thought_n of_o this_o ennoble_v our_o mind_n and_o since_o there_o be_v better_a thing_n in_o the_o other_o world_n let_v we_o use_v our_o utmost_a endeavour_n to_o possess_v ourselves_o of_o they_o let_v we_o live_v like_o man_n who_o be_v bear_v for_o great_a thing_n than_o this_o world_n afford_v let_v we_o endeavour_v to_o inform_v ourselves_o what_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o next_o world_n be_v and_o how_o we_o may_v attain_v it_o and_o let_v we_o use_v all_o present_a thing_n as_o those_o who_o know_v there_o be_v infinite_o great_a and_o better_a thing_n reserve_v for_o we_o in_o the_o next_o world._n iii_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o also_o not_o to_o be_v over-concerned_n for_o the_o shortness_n of_o our_o life_n our_o life_n indeed_o be_v very_o short_a they_o fly_v away_o like_o a_o shadow_n and_o fade_v like_o the_o flower_n of_o the_o field_n and_o this_o be_v a_o very_a unsupportable_a thought_n be_v there_o either_o no_o life_n after_o this_o or_o not_o so_o happy_a a_o life_n as_o this_o but_o beside_o all_o the_o other_o proof_n we_o have_v of_o another_o life_n the_o very_a shortness_n of_o our_o life_n may_v convince_v we_o that_o death_n do_v not_o put_v a_o of_o thing_n he_o will_v very_o easy_o trust_v god_n for_o every_o thing_n else_o for_o he_o be_v not_o so_o solicitous_a about_o any_o thing_n in_o this_o world_n as_o he_o be_v for_o his_o soul_n and_o if_o he_o can_v trust_v god_n with_o his_o dear_a interest_n sure_o he_o will_v trust_v he_o in_o less_o matter_n the_o promise_n of_o eternal_a life_n through_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n be_v the_o high_a demonstration_n of_o god_n love_n to_o we_o and_o he_o who_o be_v so_o well_o assure_v of_o god_n love_n that_o he_o can_v trust_v he_o for_o heaven_n can_v never_o distrust_v his_o care_n and_o providence_n in_o this_o world._n the_o method_n of_o god_n providence_n can_v never_o be_v so_o unknown_a to_o we_o in_o this_o world_n as_o the_o state_n of_o the_o other_o world_n be_v unknown_a and_o if_o we_o can_v cheerful_o follow_v god_n into_o a_o unseen_a and_o unknown_a world_n can_v we_o be_v content_v to_o follow_v he_o through_o the_o most_o dark_a and_o perplex_a track_n of_o providence_n here_o so_o that_o we_o have_v as_o little_a reason_n to_o complain_v that_o the_o state_n of_o the_o other_o world_n be_v unknown_a to_o we_o as_o we_o have_v that_o we_o must_v live_v by_o faith_n in_o this_o world_n for_o absent_a unseen_a and_o unknown_a thing_n be_v the_o object_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o those_o who_o will_v trust_v god_n no_o far_o than_o they_o can_v see_v neither_o in_o this_o world_n nor_o in_o the_o next_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o depend_v upon_o his_o providence_n here_o nor_o to_o expect_v heaven_n hereafter_o 2_o the_o state_n of_o the_o other_o world_n be_v so_o much_o unknown_a to_o we_o be_v a_o very_a good_a reason_n why_o we_o shall_v cheerful_o comply_v with_o all_o the_o term_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o do_v that_o state_n and_o therefore_o the_o wise_a course_n we_o can_v take_v be_v to_o obey_v all_o his_o law_n without_o any_o dispute_n not_o only_o as_o the_o condition_n of_o happiness_n without_o which_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v admit_v into_o heaven_n but_o as_o the_o necessary_a preparation_n for_o it_o as_o to_o explain_v this_o by_o a_o parallel_n case_n which_o you_o will_v easy_o understand_v suppose_v we_o have_v pre-existed_n in_o a_o former_a state_n as_o some_o say_v we_o do_v before_o we_o come_v into_o these_o body_n and_o before_o we_o know_v any_o thing_n of_o this_o
