righteous_o and_o godly_a who_o keep_v their_o appetite_n and_o passion_n under_o due_a restraint_n and_o good_a government_n so_o that_o they_o be_v harmless_a in_o their_o conversation_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o they_o live_v to_o the_o good_a purpose_n of_o promote_a their_o own_o and_o other_o man_n good_a estate_n and_o welfare_n i_o have_v now_o brief_o touch_v upon_o the_o privilege_n man_n do_v or_o may_v receive_v by_o be_v member_n of_o the_o christian_a church_n but_o i_o have_v not_o in_o my_o discourse_n observe_v the_o method_n which_o i_o intend_v because_o i_o will_v be_v short_a i_o shall_v therefore_o only_o mention_v how_o it_o be_v with_o they_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o devil_n and_o brief_o the_o case_n be_v thus_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n that_o it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o far_o less_o difficulty_n for_o we_o who_o have_v the_o gospel_n and_o live_v though_o but_o in_o the_o outward_a communion_n with_o the_o church_n to_o repent_v of_o our_o sin_n and_o become_v good_a man_n and_o to_o live_v holy_a life_n than_o it_o be_v or_o be_v to_o any_o other_o this_o be_v now_o make_v so_o practicable_a so_o feasible_a a_o matter_n that_o no_o man_n fall_v short_a of_o it_o who_o be_v not_o foolish_o obstinate_a unaccountable_o sottish_a and_o unnatural_o neglectful_a of_o himself_o and_o careless_a of_o his_o own_o happiness_n so_o that_o whoever_o fail_v it_o must_v be_v resolve_v into_o his_o own_o gross_a stupidity_n sottishness_n and_o self-neglect_n for_o he_o be_v now_o put_v into_o a_o condition_n and_o capacity_n of_o receive_v the_o great_a mercy_n from_o the_o divine_a bounty_n and_o be_v in_o the_o way_n in_o which_o god_n usual_o do_v communicate_v they_o but_o as_o many_o as_o be_v recover_v out_o of_o a_o state_n of_o sin_n to_o a_o life_n of_o virtue_n their_o past_a sin_n be_v all_o pardon_v their_o frequent_a infirmity_n and_o shortness_n be_v also_o remit_v so_o as_o they_o shall_v not_o rise_v up_o in_o judgement_n to_o condemn_v they_o and_o they_o have_v eternal_a life_n ascertain_v to_o they_o by_o the_o immutable_a promise_n of_o that_o god_n who_o can_v lie_v they_o be_v under_o his_o protection_n and_o special_a providence_n who_o order_v all_o thing_n that_o befall_v they_o so_o as_o that_o they_o turn_v to_o their_o advantage_n and_o be_v make_v serviceable_a to_o their_o virtue_n and_o will_v increase_v their_o happiness_n last_o as_o to_o the_o devil_n the_o prince_n of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o air_n the_o spirit_n that_o work_v in_o the_o child_n of_o disobedience_n they_o be_v redeem_v from_o under_o his_o vassalage_n he_o have_v now_o no_o more_o power_n over_o they_o he_o can_v domineer_v over_o their_o soul_n or_o body_n as_o he_o do_v before_o the_o come_n of_o our_o saviour_n his_o oracle_n be_v silence_v his_o power_n lessen_v the_o light_n of_o the_o glorious_a gospel_n have_v scatter_v the_o power_n of_o darkness_n so_o that_o now_o they_o creep_v into_o the_o corner_n of_o the_o earth_n now_o that_o man_n soul_n be_v free_v from_o the_o ignorance_n and_o those_o error_n under_o which_o they_o be_v hold_v their_o body_n be_v also_o free_a from_o the_o hellish_a cruelty_n of_o tyrannical_a fiend_n they_o be_v no_o long_o under_o the_o power_n of_o satan_n now_o that_o they_o be_v become_v subject_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n who_o have_v conquer_v and_o triumph_v over_o the_o head_n of_o the_o apostate_n spirit_n and_o have_v the_o key_n of_o hell_n and_o death_n thus_o i_o have_v brief_o represent_v the_o great_a benefit_n which_o accrue_v to_o man_n by_o be_v member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n whether_o we_o consider_v they_o as_o single_a person_n or_o as_o in_o society_n with_o reference_n to_o god_n or_o the_o devil_n for_o whether_o we_o consider_v the_o greatness_n and_o largeness_n the_o vast_a extent_n and_o long_a continuance_n of_o the_o church_n or_o the_o excellent_a wisdom_n and_o goodness_n of_o many_o of_o its_o member_n whether_o we_o look_v on_o the_o engagement_n lay_v upon_o they_o in_o their_o first_o admission_n into_o the_o church_n or_o the_o admirable_a order_n and_o government_n of_o it_o or_o the_o incomparable_o good_a law_n which_o be_v give_v to_o all_o its_o member_n or_o the_o proper_a and_o wholesome_a discipline_n which_o be_v use_v in_o it_o or_o the_o religious_a exercise_n which_o be_v use_v in_o the_o public_a assembly_n we_o must_v necessary_o confess_v that_o all_o these_o will_v have_v a_o mighty_a influence_n on_o man_n to_o make_v they_o good_a in_o themselves_o and_o good_a in_o all_o their_o relation_n and_o if_o they_o become_v good_a they_o be_v then_o from_o under_o the_o dominion_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o within_o the_o kingdom_n and_o so_o under_o the_o protection_n and_o care_n of_o the_o sovereign_a lord_n of_o
as_o they_o account_v unnatural_a precept_n of_o our_o saviour_n to_o disparage_v his_o whole_a gospel_n i_o hope_v my_o discourse_n have_v show_v both_o how_o reasonable_a and_o how_o natural_a it_o be_v and_o that_o it_o have_v take_v away_o all_o the_o pretence_n which_o weak_a and_o inconsiderate_a or_o ill-natured_a man_n have_v for_o their_o neglect_n of_o it_o so_o that_o i_o have_v prevent_v myself_o of_o what_o i_o propound_v to_o do_v next_o viz._n iii_o to_o show_v the_o falseness_n of_o those_o objection_n which_o be_v offer_v against_o it_o the_o most_o considerable_a i_o think_v be_v these_o object_n 1._o it_o be_v unnatural_a to_o love_v one_o that_o do_v and_o intend_v we_o mischief_n object_n 2._o it_o be_v necessary_a to_o hate_v for_o our_o own_o defence_n and_o preservation_n object_n 3._o example_n do_v incline_v we_o to_o it_o object_n 4._o if_o we_o hate_v our_o enemy_n they_o will_v expect_v and_o be_v afraid_a of_o this_o and_o so_o will_v be_v deter_v from_o be_v our_o enemy_n in_o answer_n to_o the_o first_o objection_n 1._o i_o have_v show_v in_o my_o explication_n that_o we_o be_v not_o require_v to_o love_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v in_o itself_o evil_a 2._o i_o have_v in_o my_o follow_a discourse_n show_v that_o this_o evil_n may_v be_v a_o cause_n of_o much_o good_a unto_o we_o here_o but_o especial_o hereafter_o or_o if_o of_o no_o good_a to_o we_o yet_o there_o be_v so_o much_o good_a to_o other_o as_o may_v make_v our_o love_n prevail_v above_o hatred_n for_o the_o second_o objection_n i_o have_v make_v out_o that_o hatred_n be_v not_o the_o likely_a method_n to_o be_v rid_v of_o this_o evil_a or_o to_o prevent_v it_o for_o the_o future_a for_o the_o 3d_o objection_n i_o have_v show_v that_o we_o must_v not_o follow_v example_n to_o do_v evil._n it_o may_v become_v ape_n and_o child_n to_o be_v whole_o determine_v by_o example_n and_o to_o imitate_v every_o thing_n they_o see_v but_o it_o be_v very_o unworthy_a of_o they_o who_o have_v the_o use_n of_o their_o reason_n as_o for_o the_o four_o objection_n i_o answer_v 1._o this_o be_v no_o method_n to_o remove_v or_o lessen_v but_o to_o continue_v and_o increase_v their_o hatred_n it_o be_v common_o say_v man_n hate_v what_o they_o fear_v these_o two_o differ_v very_o little_a we_o hate_v all_o evil_a and_o fear_v that_o which_o be_v absent_a but_o love_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n removes_z this_o evil_a from_o the_o mind_n and_o therefore_o 2._o tend_v to_o reform_v and_o mend_v the_o offender_n himself_o it_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o free_v he_o from_o his_o malice_n which_o be_v not_o extinguish_v but_o rather_o inflame_v by_o that_o which_o increase_v his_o fear_n for_o notwithstanding_o that_o his_o intention_n and_o mind_n be_v as_o evil_a as_o before_o fear_v not_o at_o all_o abate_v his_o desire_n of_o do_v harm_n but_o only_o cut_v short_a his_o opportunity_n and_o therefore_o 3._o it_o will_v if_o it_o increase_v his_o hatred_n and_o lessen_v his_o opportunity_n make_v he_o watch_v every_o little_a occasion_n of_o do_v the_o mischief_n he_o design_n and_o it_o be_v hard_o for_o we_o to_o keep_v such_o a_o constant_a and_o strict_a watch_n as_o to_o give_v no_o advantage_n to_o one_o who_o seek_v it_o if_o all_o these_o reason_n which_o i_o have_v propose_v prevail_v not_o with_o we_o to_o put_v in_o practice_n this_o precept_n of_o love_v our_o enemy_n yet_o let_v the_o authority_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n persuade_v we_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o i_o who_o practise_v thus_o myself_o i_o who_o you_o be_v who_o have_v right_o to_o you_o and_o all_o man_n i_o who_o know_v what_o be_v good_a for_o you_o better_a than_o you_o do_v yourselves_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o love_v your_o enemy_n all_o the_o inference_n i_o shall_v make_v be_v that_o then_o we_o must_v love_v those_o who_o be_v not_o our_o enemy_n and_o still_o much_o more_o our_o friend_n and_o those_o that_o love_v we_o if_o we_o must_v love_v those_o that_o intend_v and_o practice_v evil_a against_o we_o much_o more_o those_o that_o desire_n and_o do_v we_o good_n if_o he_o that_o love_v not_o his_o enemy_n be_v short_a of_o a_o christian_a he_o who_o love_v not_o his_o friend_n be_v worse_a than_o a_o infidel_n and_o if_o he_o be_v so_o than_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n will_v not_o save_v he_o he_o that_o be_v a_o pagan_a though_o he_o seem_v a_o christian_n shall_v fall_v under_o the_o condemnation_n of_o unbeliever_n i_o conclude_v all_o with_o remind_v you_o of_o my_o intention_n in_o this_o discourse_n which_o be_v wise_a as_o to_o serve_v ourselves_o and_o religion_n of_o all_o the_o condition_n of_o life_n which_o we_o be_v in_o by_o make_v they_o serviceable_a to_o love_n and_o goodwill_n which_o assure_o be_v the_o best_a life_n we_o can_v live_v that_o which_o will_v make_v we_o most_o acceptable_a to_o god_n most_o easy_a and_o delightful_a to_o ourselves_o and_o most_o useful_a and_o pleasant_a to_o other_o it_o be_v the_o best_a that_o earth_n or_o heaven_n be_v capable_a of_o god_n of_o his_o infinite_a mercy_n grant_v unto_o we_o the_o true_a spirit_n of_o christ_n that_o spirit_n who_o fruit_n be_v love_n and_o joy_n and_o peace_n meekness_n long-suffering_a gentleness_n patience_n goodness_n faith_n and_o temperance_n that_o no_o law_n may_v be_v against_o we_o that_o we_o may_v begin_v to_o live_v that_o life_n here_o which_o we_o hope_v to_o live_v hereafter_o and_o which_o glorify_a saint_n and_o angel_n now_o live_v in_o the_o high_a heaven_n you_o the_o life_n which_o the_o uppermost_a room_n at_o feast_n and_o the_o chief_a seat_n in_o the_o synagogue_n and_o greeting_n in_o the_o market_n and_o to_o be_v call_v of_o man_n rabbi_n rabbi_n etc._n etc._n and_o under_o that_o
their_o most_o proper_a and_o usual_a sense_n imply_v manifest_a contradiction_n they_o have_v be_v no_o friend_n to_o the_o christian_a faith_n and_o whatsoever_o they_o say_v the_o christian_n father_n will_v not_o dertermine_v his_o son_n to_o believe_v contradiction_n but_o i_o conclude_v this_o second_o proposition_n with_o this_o practical_a inference_n if_o christian_n have_v but_o one_o master_n one_o father_n than_o they_o must_v own_v his_o authority_n that_o be_v believe_v his_o revelation_n obey_v his_o command_n without_o any_o doubt_n or_o dispute_v for_o his_o probable_o be_v a_o brief_a transcript_n of_o some_o of_o they_o and_o none_o can_v tell_v what_o they_o be_v but_o he_o that_o make_v it_o god_n religion_n like_o water_n will_v not_o rise_v high_o than_o the_o spring_n if_o it_o derive_v its_o origine_fw-la from_o this_o earth_n only_o it_o will_v not_o rise_v and_o raise_v we_o up_o with_o it_o to_o heaven_n but_o if_o this_o be_v true_a that_o we_o have_v no_o father_n on_o earth_n how_o be_v it_o that_o we_o hear_v so_o much_o of_o a_o infallible_a judge_n either_o a_o old_a man_n sit_v in_o a_o chair_n at_o rome_n or_o else_o a_o synod_n of_o doctor_n for_o the_o most_o part_n pack_v together_o by_o a_o faction_n and_o design_v to_o drive_v on_o some_o secular_a interest_n for_o such_o have_v be_v many_o council_n though_o not_o all_o but_o what_o mean_v those_o pretender_n that_o they_o thus_o take_v upon_o they_o will_v they_o decide_v all_o our_o controversy_n end_v our_o debate_n a_o excellent_a attempt_n but_o will_v they_o do_v it_o indeed_o yes_o effectual_o and_o if_o any_o doubt_n of_o their_o decree_n they_o shall_v be_v quick_o convince_v by_o a_o light_a burn_a fire_n they_o will_v take_v care_n to_o keep_v those_o that_o be_v under_o they_o iniignorance_n they_o shall_v not_o have_v knowledge_n enough_o to_o question_v their_o determination_n or_o if_o any_o little_a light_n do_v break_v through_o all_o the_o curtain_n they_o have_v draw_v than_o they_o affright_v they_o with_o anathema_n and_o if_o these_o will_v not_o do_v neither_o they_o shall_v to_o the_o stake_n how_o grievous_o the_o christian_a world_n have_v be_v abuse_v by_o these_o practice_n be_v too_o notorious_a whilst_o these_o false_a father_n do_v not_o at_o all_o serve_v the_o design_n of_o truth_n and_o piety_n but_o mere_o of_o their_o own_o ambition_n and_o covetousness_n notwithstanding_o what_o i_o have_v say_v of_o those_o convention_n that_o be_v politic_o and_o unwarrantable_o peck_v together_o by_o a_o party_n for_o the_o hold_v up_o of_o a_o faction_n and_o serve_v a_o carnal_a interest_n i_o will_v not_o be_v understand_v to_o detract_v in_o the_o least_o from_o a_o due_o congregat_v synod_n of_o wise_a and_o learned_a man_n their_o just_a authority_n which_o yet_o i_o must_v think_v do_v not_o amount_v to_o that_o of_o a_o father_n or_o rabbi_n as_o here_o explain_v they_o be_v not_o absolute_a can_v determine_v universal_o but_o have_v they_o no_o power_n in_o determine_v what_o be_v it_o though_o this_o be_v a_o argument_n fit_a for_o a_o large_a discourse_n yet_o to_o prevent_v mistake_v and_o abuse_v of_o what_o i_o have_v say_v i_o shall_v here_o speak_v somewhat_o of_o my_o mind_n in_o two_o or_o three_o particular_n 1._o they_o who_o can_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v any_o better_a reason_n than_o the_o authority_n of_o a_o synod_n shall_v be_v determine_v by_o they_o in_o matter_n both_o of_o faith_n and_o practice_n that_o this_o may_v be_v the_o case_n of_o the_o vulgar_a i_o doubt_v not_o many_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o child_n who_o at_o first_o must_v take_v all_o on_o trust_n and_o it_o be_v best_o for_o they_o in_o that_o state_n so_o to_o do_v though_o afterward_o they_o may_v see_v how_o they_o have_v be_v impose_v upon_o and_o lay_v aside_o those_o infant-prejudices_a the_o common_a people_n first_o believe_v and_o obey_v because_o a_o company_n of_o wise_a and_o learned_a man_n tell_v they_o that_o what_o be_v propose_v be_v true_a and_o good_a but_o afterward_o these_o man_n reason_n may_v be_v more_o improve_v they_o may_v have_v better_a argument_n to_o believe_v and_o high_a motive_n to_o obey_v than_o their_o word_n and_o may_v say_v as_o the_o samaritan_n we_o now_o believe_v not_o because_o of_o your_o word_n but_o because_o we_o ourselves_o see_v the_o ground_n of_o this_o first_o position_n be_v that_o man_n be_v to_o be_v determine_v to_o assent_v or_o act_v by_o the_o best_a argument_n they_o can_v have_v now_o i_o suppose_v very_o many_o in_o so_o low_a a_o condition_n that_o this_o be_v the_o best_a they_o can_v meet_v with_o viz._n the_o authority_n of_o a_o synod_n nay_o many_o time_n the_o determination_n of_o a_o single_a man._n this_o be_v indeed_o a_o piteous_a case_n when_o in_o all_o matter_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a true_a and_o false_a a_o man_n must_v rely_v on_o another_o testimony_n and_o yet_o it_o have_v not_o be_v so_o sad_a if_o man_n that_o have_v learning_n and_o knowledge_n enough_o have_v have_v more_o of_o honesty_n but_o they_o have_v be_v so_o unfaithful_a to_o their_o trust_n that_o they_o have_v very_o much_o impair_v their_o credit_n with_o the_o world_n i_o understand_v the_o popish_a council_n especial_o 2._o more_o improve_v man_n where_o the_o matter_n be_v disputable_a and_o somewhat_o equal_a and_o unconcluding_a argument_n on_o both_o side_n appear_v if_o a_o synod_n interpose_v their_o authority_n i_o think_v shall_v be_v determine_v have_v not_o do_v more_o to_o bring_v they_o into_o great_a misery_n than_o they_o have_v contribute_v towards_o their_o happiness_n 6._o this_o lead_v i_o to_o another_o forcible_a motive_n to_o take_v care_n of_o their_o education_n because_o if_o we_o do_v not_o we_o shall_v be_v accessary_a to_o all_o the_o evil_a they_o both_o do_v and_o suffer_v it_o will_v be_v trouble_n enough_o to_o think_v we_o have_v those_o spring_v from_o we_o who_o have_v be_v the_o author_n of_o great_a mischief_n to_o other_o and_o fall_v into_o uttermost_a ruin_n themselves_o though_o ourselves_o have_v no_o hand_n in_o it_o that_o those_o that_o come_v from_o and_o be_v as_o it_o be_v part_n of_o we_o be_v most_o just_o sentence_v to_o endless_a torment_n this_o thought_n be_v almost_o unsupportable_a to_o a_o parent_n but_o what_o will_v it_o then_o be_v to_o make_v this_o bitter_a reflection_n all_o this_o ill_a that_o my_o child_n have_v do_v and_o all_o the_o misery_n he_o endure_v be_v the_o effect_n of_o my_o negligence_n it_o be_v through_o my_o faulty_a carelessness_n that_o he_o be_v so_o sinful_a and_o be_v so_o wretched_a if_o the_o happiness_n of_o heaven_n admit_v of_o allay_v as_o it_o do_v of_o degree_n the_o remembrance_n that_o i_o do_v not_o do_v my_o utmost_a to_o rescue_v any_o of_o my_o acquaintance_n and_o friend_n from_o sin_n will_v give_v a_o great_a damp_n to_o the_o joy_n of_o that_o state_n but_o that_o i_o shall_v be_v so_o gross_o negligent_a of_o my_o own_o child_n as_o not_o to_o do_v all_o i_o can_v to_o prevent_v such_o unsufferable_a woe_n this_o must_v pierce_v the_o soul_n last_o then_o let_v all_o parent_n consider_v what_o account_n they_o will_v be_v able_a to_o give_v of_o themselves_o to_o their_o judge_n of_o the_o neglect_v of_o their_o child_n when_o they_o see_v they_o doom_v to_o everlasting_a misery_n for_o that_o wickedness_n they_o fall_v into_o for_o want_v of_o timely_a instruction_n when_o deserve_v to_o be_v brand_v for_o a_o monster_n and_o what_o shall_v we_o think_v of_o those_o that_o starve_v the_o better_a and_o high_a life_n that_o hear_v the_o cry_v of_o the_o little_a soul_n after_o knowledge_n and_o goodness_n but_o turn_v a_o deaf_a ear_n to_o they_o and_o never_o once_o take_v care_n to_o nourish_v they_o up_o to_o eternal_a life_n but_o suffer_v they_o to_o faint_v and_o die_v the_o worst_a of_o death_n that_o of_o the_o soul_n and_o if_o murderer_n of_o the_o low_a life_n shall_v be_v punish_v so_o severe_o if_o those_o that_o when_o they_o have_v wherewith_o to_o do_v it_o deny_v to_o feed_v the_o hungry_a animal_n life_n shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v in_o judgement_n before_o god_n how_o then_o shall_v the_o murderer_n of_o soul_n be_v avenge_v and_o where_o shall_v they_o appear_v that_o have_v deny_v the_o bread_n of_o life_n to_o their_o own_o child_n it_o be_v a_o inhuman_a thing_n count_v not_o to_o show_v the_o way_n to_o a_o ignorant_a traveller_n but_o o_o how_o monstrous_o unnatural_a be_v it_o when_o the_o soul_n of_o thy_o own_o child_n be_v call_v to_o thou_o by_o its_o inclination_n and_o its_o necessity_n cry_v the_o indies_n and_o the_o further_a part_n of_o the_o world_n this_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n i_o infer_v our_o endeavour_n from_o which_o follow_v by_o way_n of_o corollary_n that_o we_o must_v take_v care_n never_o to_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o interfere_n with_o our_o endeavour_n after_o every_o other_o man_n happiness_n hereafter_o and_o his_o goodness_n here_o we_o must_v never_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o man_n be_v good_a man_n in_o this_o world_n and_o their_o happiness_n in_o that_o to_o come_v but_o that_o be_v not_o all_o that_o be_v imply_v in_o our_o endeavour_n that_o we_o do_v nothing_o to_o oppose_v and_o hinder_v man_n from_o be_v good_a and_o happy_a it_o imply_v also_o that_o we_o do_v that_o which_o be_v serviceable_a to_o the_o attain_v these_o end_n and_o in_o all_o deal_n with_o they_o in_o all_o we_o do_v to_o and_o about_o they_o that_o we_o help_v forward_o their_o virtue_n and_o happiness_n that_o either_o by_o more_o remote_a or_o near_a method_n either_o by_o ourselves_o or_o other_o we_o contribute_v to_o their_o present_a holiness_n and_o their_o glory_n in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v if_o we_o do_v not_o thus_o we_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o ourselves_o and_o our_o action_n contradict_v each_o other_o we_o be_v act_v by_o contrary_a passion_n and_o the_o principle_n of_o our_o action_n oppose_v and_o thwart_v each_o other_o for_o when_o we_o desire_v man_n may_v be_v good_a and_o virtuous_a and_o everlasting_o happy_a this_o proceed_v from_o love_n and_o goodwill_n but_o when_o we_o design_v to_o punish_v they_o in_o their_o body_n or_o to_o diminish_v their_o reputation_n or_o lessen_v their_o estate_n unless_o this_o be_v in_o order_n to_o their_o great_a happiness_n and_o unless_o we_o intend_v to_o further_a that_o in_o such_o way_n we_o do_v not_o act_v from_o charity_n but_o hatred_n except_o such_o particular_a evil_n be_v inflict_v on_o they_o by_o we_o for_o their_o amendment_n and_o with_o especial_a regard_n to_o their_o everlasting_a salvation_n we_o be_v not_o charitable_a but_o malicious_a and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o we_o be_v at_o variance_n with_o ourselves_o we_o desire_v man_n may_v be_v miserable_a here_o and_o happy_a hereafter_o not_o that_o thereby_o they_o may_v be_v so_o i_o wish_v that_o which_o i_o have_v here_o say_v may_v not_o be_v a_o sanctuary_n to_o uncharitableness_n and_o that_o man_n will_v say_v they_o intend_v to_o do_v man_n some_o great_a good_a by_o the_o evil_n they_o lie_v on_o they_o landlord_n oppress_v their_o tenant_n to_o make_v they_o more_o diligent_a master_n will_v be_v hard_a severe_a and_o high_a to_o their_o servant_n to_o keep_v they_o in_o their_o due_a observance_n father_n austere_a to_o their_o child_n to_o teach_v they_o obedience_n one_o man_n will_v eclipse_v another_o man_n reputation_n that_o he_o may_v not_o have_v a_o opportunity_n to_o do_v so_o much_o mischief_n as_o he_o may_v if_o he_o be_v unsuspected_a it_o be_v well_o if_o these_o be_v not_o mere_a excuse_n of_o passion_n and_o ill_a nature_n it_o be_v well_o if_o they_o think_v as_o they_o say_v and_o if_o it_o be_v as_o they_o think_v that_o these_o be_v the_o best_a way_n to_o secure_a man_n from_o those_o evil_n but_o i_o fear_v it_o be_v too_o often_o peevishness_n and_o a_o waspish_a angry_a spirit_n that_o evaporate_v and_o be_v not_o employ_v by_o religion_n and_o under_o the_o conduct_n of_o charity_n nor_o design_n any_o good_a or_o if_o good_a be_v intend_v i_o doubt_v very_o often_o some_o wise_a and_o better_a method_n may_v be_v take_v for_o the_o effect_v it_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o of_o overcome_v evil_a with_o good_n i_o know_v the_o hypocritical_a proud_a pharisee_n those_o false-hearted_a pretender_n be_v sharp_o rebuke_v by_o our_o saviour_n and_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o there_o be_v such_o in_o our_o day_n only_o let_v we_o be_v cautious_a we_o do_v not_o over-hasty_o condemn_v man_n nor_o inconsiderate_o resolve_v upon_o the_o use_n of_o extreme_a remedy_n till_o the_o disease_n seem_v incurable_a by_o any_o other_o when_o in_o some_o of_o these_o way_n we_o do_v that_o which_o tend_v to_o bring_v man_n near_o perfection_n and_o happiness_n we_o do_v they_o good_n but_o i_o need_v not_o be_v very_o particular_a in_o this_o because_o every_o man_n mind_n will_v faithful_o suggest_v to_o he_o what_o be_v good_a to_o and_o for_o other_o men._n no_o man_n that_o be_v incline_v to_o do_v good_a to_o other_o can_v easy_o be_v ignorant_a or_o mistake_v all_o the_o danger_n be_v in_o these_o two_o particular_n 1._o that_o he_o shall_v only_o consider_v a_o part_n and_o not_o the_o whole_a or_o the_o present_a only_o without_o reference_n to_o what_o be_v future_a and_o so_o many_o time_n may_v do_v they_o hurt_v instead_o of_o good_n i_o have_v endeavour_v to_o prevent_v this_o mistake_n in_o my_o explication_n where_o i_o have_v determine_v those_o action_n to_o be_v good_a to_o other_o which_o conduce_v to_o the_o obtain_n of_o their_o last_o end_n which_o tend_v to_o make_v they_o perfect_a and_o happy_a 2_o the_o other_o be_v that_o he_o only_o have_v regard_n to_o one_o or_o a_o few_o and_o neglect_v other_o and_o more_o now_o the_o text_n direct_v we_o here_o also_o and_o teach_v we_o to_o do_v good_a to_o all_o man_n which_o be_v a_o principle_n of_o great_a wisdom_n and_o justice_n and_o that_o man_n who_o observe_v it_o and_o have_v attain_v to_o this_o disposition_n to_o regard_v universality_n to_o take_v unto_o his_o thought_n the_o concern_v of_o all_o man_n he_o will_v govern_v himself_o in_o his_o carriage_n to_o they_o discreet_o he_o will_v be_v just_a and_o impartial_a in_o his_o deal_v he_o will_v not_o out_o of_o a_o too_o particular_a respect_n neglect_v a_o more_o common_a public_a good_a will_v not_o to_o serve_v one_o or_o a_o few_o disserve_v and_o prejudice_n nay_o or_o be_v mindless_a of_o the_o concern_v of_o the_o community_n of_o many_o he_o that_o live_v by_o this_o rule_n so_o to_o do_v good_a to_o one_o man_n as_o remember_v he_o must_v do_v so_o to_o all_o he_o will_v neither_o be_v guilty_a of_o littleness_n
