we_o may_v believe_v that_o he_o will_v chastise_v his_o enemy_n with_o scorpion_n and_o upon_o this_o account_n we_o shall_v take_v care_n to_o hear_v the_o rod_n and_o who_o have_v appoint_v it_o and_o shall_v make_v such_o good_a use_n of_o the_o misery_n which_o we_o suffer_v in_o this_o world_n as_o to_o let_v they_o put_v we_o in_o mind_n to_o flee_v from_o the_o wrath_n to_o come_v for_o if_o we_o will_v not_o hearken_v to_o god_n voice_n when_o he_o chide_v we_o we_o shall_v at_o last_o when_o he_o come_v to_o smite_v we_o sink_v under_o the_o weight_n of_o his_o hand_n and_o if_o we_o neglect_v his_o displeasure_n we_o shall_v fall_v under_o his_o fury_n and_o indignation_n 3._o if_o god_n in_o the_o great_a and_o high_a instance_n of_o his_o mercy_n with_o which_o he_o have_v acquaint_v we_o in_o his_o gospel_n have_v not_o allow_v we_o a_o absolute_a pardon_n but_o have_v even_o in_o that_o his_o covenant_n of_o grace_n require_v condition_n of_o we_o in_o order_n to_o our_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o that_o pardon_n which_o be_v the_o purchase_n of_o our_o saviour_n than_o it_o do_v high_o concern_v we_o that_o we_o take_v care_n to_o perform_v the_o condition_n on_o our_o part_n that_o so_o we_o be_v not_o exclude_v from_o the_o benefit_n of_o such_o purchase_n for_o though_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a that_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v save_v by_o our_o repentance_n alone_o yet_o it_o be_v as_o certain_a that_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v save_v without_o it_o no_o he_o who_o have_v purchase_v our_o ransom_n have_v in_o such_o his_o purchase_n provide_v for_o god_n honour_n as_o well_o as_o for_o our_o safety_n and_o notwithstanding_o his_o purchase_n have_v teach_v we_o that_o we_o shall_v forfeit_v the_o last_o if_o we_o take_v no_o care_n of_o the_o first_o let_v we_o therefore_o look_v upon_o ourselves_o as_o we_o be_v in_o ourselves_o that_o be_v as_o forlorn_a miserable_a wretch_n let_v we_o acknowledge_v ourselves_o such_o to_o god_n that_o that_o person_n to_o who_o this_o expiation_n be_v there_o ascribe_v be_v call_v god_n the_o son_n of_o god_n the_o word_n the_o only_o beget_v of_o the_o father_n that_o he_o be_v there_o say_v to_o be_v with_o his_o father_n before_o the_o world_n begin_v that_o he_o lay_v the_o foundation_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o that_o the_o heaven_n be_v the_o work_n of_o his_o hand_n that_o he_o way_n and_o though_o we_o be_v but_o man_n yet_o let_v we_o in_o this_o attempt_n to_o make_v ourselves_o like_a to_o god_n as_o he_o in_o his_o incarnation_n be_v please_v to_o make_v himself_o like_a to_o we_o the_o attempt_n be_v great_a and_o generous_a and_o worthy_a the_o endeavour_n of_o our_o best_a endowment_n and_o most_o noble_a faculty_n for_o if_o we_o cheerful_o cast_v off_o our_o sin_n and_z by_o a_o constant_a and_o sincere_a practice_n of_o holiness_n do_v make_v it_o our_o business_n to_o be_v like_o our_o saviour_n holy_a and_o undefiled_a as_o he_o our_o highpriest_n be_v we_o shall_v in_o some_o sense_n lift_v ourselves_o above_o the_o earth_n even_o while_o we_o inhabit_v in_o it_o and_o though_o we_o can_v get_v up_o to_o heaven_n yet_o we_o shall_v by_o that_o mean_n bring_v heaven_n down_o into_o our_o soul_n and_o so_o shall_v in_o some_o measure_n anticipate_v our_o consummate_a happiness_n and_o since_o the_o grand_a design_n of_o our_o saviour_n humiliation_n in_o his_o incarnation_n be_v to_o engage_v we_o to_o this_o holy_a ambition_n let_v we_o have_v a_o care_n that_o we_o do_v not_o defeat_v such_o his_o design_n and_o our_o own_o great_a hope_n 2._o do_v our_o saviour_n by_o take_v our_o flesh_n and_o blood_n and_o so_o unite_n it_o to_o himself_o consecrate_v our_o nature_n to_o the_o great_a and_o noble_a purpose_n of_o holiness_n and_o mercy_n and_o do_v he_o also_o by_o so_o do_v so_o intimate_o unite_v we_o to_o himself_o that_o we_o be_v flesh_n of_o his_o flesh_n bone_n of_o his_o bone_n and_o member_n of_o his_o body_n then_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o have_v a_o more_o sacred_a and_o especial_a care_n by_o no_o mean_n to_o pollute_v that_o which_o he_o have_v so_o consecrate_v and_o therefore_o what_o st._n paul_n say_v in_o the_o case_n of_o fornication_n shall_v i_o take_v the_o member_n of_o christ_n and_o make_v they_o the_o member_n of_o a_o harlot_n god_n forbid_v that_o we_o may_v say_v in_o all_o other_o like_o case_n shall_v we_o take_v the_o member_n of_o christ_n and_o make_v they_o the_o member_n of_o a_o drunkard_n of_o a_o unclean_a of_o a_o intemperate_a person_n or_o indeed_o of_o any_o other_o sinner_n whatsoever_o god_n forbid_v for_o we_o shall_v be_v ashamed_a to_o abuse_v our_o body_n which_o by_o his_o incarnation_n be_v so_o near_o ally_v to_o his_o body_n that_o they_o be_v the_o same_o flesh_n and_o blood_n with_o it_o i_o say_v we_o shall_v be_v ashamed_a to_o abuse_v they_o by_o such_o practice_n which_o we_o must_v needs_o know_v his_o soul_n abhor_v and_o this_o our_o shame_n shall_v therefore_o be_v attend_v with_o the_o great_a confusion_n because_o whereas_o he_o take_v upon_o he_o our_o flesh_n that_o in_o that_o flesh_n he_o may_v work_v out_o our_o salvation_n we_o when_o we_o employ_v it_o in_o any_o sin_n do_v indeed_o employ_v it_o to_o its_o own_o utter_a ruin_n and_o damnation_n let_v we_o therefore_o have_v a_o care_n that_o we_o be_v sober_a chaste_a temperate_a because_o otherwise_o we_o bring_v a_o scandal_n upon_o our_o great_a friend_n and_o benefactor_n for_o by_o abuse_v our_o own_o body_n when_o we_o ourselves_o be_v member_n of_o his_o body_n we_o do_v by_o the_o slander_n of_o such_o our_o do_n abuse_v his_o body_n also_o and_o here_o i_o take_v myself_o to_o be_v oblige_v to_o leave_v a_o mark_n upon_o one_o practice_n too_o too_o general_a among_o christian_n and_o that_o be_v that_o when_o they_o do_v profess_o pretend_v to_o commemorate_v the_o infinite_a mercy_n of_o their_o saviour_n incarnation_n they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o do_v it_o in_o a_o way_n agreeable_a to_o his_o honour_n that_o instead_o of_o that_o they_o do_v too_o common_o do_v it_o by_o excess_n surfeiting_n and_o drunkenness_n and_o so_o when_o they_o pretend_v to_o offer_v to_o god_n for_o their_o saviour_n incarnation_n the_o praise_n of_o man_n by_o their_o manner_n of_o do_v it_o do_v render_v themselves_o more_o vile_a than_o beast_n which_o practice_n as_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o profligate_o vile_a and_o wicked_a so_o it_o have_v bring_v such_o a_o scandal_n upon_o the_o duty_n by_o such_o its_o wickedness_n that_o not_o a_o few_o and_o those_o too_o devout_a and_o zealous_a christian_n though_o their_o zeal_n and_o devotion_n do_v indeed_o want_v wisdom_n have_v leap_v over_o into_o the_o other_o extreme_a and_o have_v utter_o disallow_v any_o commemoration_n of_o the_o infinite_a blessing_n at_o all_o so_o easy_o do_v foolish_a man_n run_v into_o extreme_n on_o both_o side_n and_o leave_v the_o golden_a mean_a to_o be_v practise_v only_o by_o a_o few_o that_o be_v by_o the_o true_o wise_a 3._o do_v our_o saviour_n humble_a himself_o to_o our_o nature_n and_o condition_n in_o order_n to_o the_o work_n out_o of_o our_o salvation_n then_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o be_v like_o he_o in_o this_o very_a respect_n and_o not_o to_o disdain_v to_o stoop_v to_o our_o inferior_n when_o by_o such_o our_o condescension_n we_o may_v any_o way_n advantage_v their_o welfare_n and_o real_a interest_n and_o for_o our_o do_v so_o we_o have_v in_o he_o the_o most_o noble_a example_n that_o ever_o yet_o the_o world_n be_v make_v acquaint_v with_o for_o in_o this_o case_n we_o imitate_v the_o condescension_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o master_n nay_o when_o our_o compassion_n stoop_v low_a it_o only_o stoop_v to_o our_o fellow-creature_n those_o who_o be_v make_v of_o the_o same_o lump_n of_o clay_n with_o ourselves_o and_o those_o who_o as_o thing_n may_v fall_v out_o may_v be_v as_o helpful_a and_o useful_a to_o we_o again_o so_o that_o when_o we_o condescend_v to_o relieve_v they_o we_o do_v by_o so_o do_v teach_v they_o to_o relieve_v we_o if_o ever_o the_o same_o or_o the_o like_a misery_n with_o they_o shall_v become_v our_o own_o and_o we_o be_v as_o sure_a that_o thing_n may_v so_o fall_v out_o as_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o we_o be_v men._n now_o because_o our_o god_n do_v condescend_v to_o our_o nature_n for_o the_o relief_n of_o our_o misery_n when_o the_o condescension_n and_o the_o kindness_n be_v only_o he_o and_o when_o the_o benefit_n be_v only_o we_o shall_v not_o we_o the_o rather_o practice_v such_o a_o charitable_a condescension_n when_o by_o such_o our_o practice_n we_o do_v commiserate_v at_o least_o our_o own_o possible_a condition_n shall_v the_o son_n of_o god_n by_o take_v upon_o himself_o our_o nature_n make_v our_o condition_n his_o in_o order_n to_o his_o more_o sensible_a compassion_n of_o such_o our_o condition_n and_o shall_v not_o we_o condescend_v for_o the_o relief_n of_o those_o of_o our_o own_o kind_a which_o after_o one_o remove_n be_v for_o the_o relief_n of_o our_o self_n for_o if_o we_o be_v too_o proud_a in_o the_o case_n to_o stoop_v to_o our_o inferior_n yet_o methinks_v we_o shall_v not_o be_v too_o proud_a to_o imitate_v our_o god_n and_o if_o the_o infirmity_n of_o the_o one_o will_v not_o engage_v we_o to_o condescension_n in_o order_n to_o compassion_n yet_o one_o will_v in_o reason_n be_v apt_a to_o think_v that_o the_o example_n of_o the_o other_o may_v do_v such_o a_o thing_n we_o ought_v therefore_o in_o order_n to_o our_o exaltation_n to_o learn_v from_o he_o that_o to_o do_v any_o good_a to_o our_o calamitous_a brother_n be_v not_o to_o debase_v ourselves_o for_o our_o charity_n be_v not_o the_o less_o but_o rather_o the_o more_o noble_a for_o be_v extend_v to_o a_o thatch_a cottage_n and_o a_o personal_a visit_n to_o the_o mean_a man_n where_o it_o be_v likely_a to_o prove_v beneficial_a to_o he_o will_v always_o wear_v this_o character_n that_o it_o be_v a_o glorious_a imitation_n of_o the_o lord_n of_o glory_n who_o do_v not_o disdain_v a_o personal_a visit_n to_o the_o mean_a of_o his_o creature_n who_o he_o have_v endow_v with_o capacity_n of_o receive_v that_o his_o inestimable_a blessing_n without_o which_o they_o must_v have_v be_v for_o ever_o miserable_a 4._o do_v our_o saviour_n not_o only_o come_v to_o we_o clothe_v in_o our_o flesh_n but_o do_v he_o also_o put_v on_o the_o form_n of_o a_o servant_n in_o order_n to_o the_o purchase_n of_o our_o redemption_n then_o this_o his_o example_n shall_v instruct_v we_o to_o do_v our_o very_a best_o work_v with_o meekness_n and_o humility_n we_o be_v very_o apt_a to_o think_v our_o ordinary_a performance_n if_o
reckon_v a_o reward_n and_o if_o that_o obedience_n to_o which_o such_o reward_n be_v by_o the_o law_n assign_v be_v entire_o their_o own_o than_o that_o person_n who_o yet_o the_o scripture_n call_v their_o saviour_n can_v in_o no_o sense_n be_v true_o so_o call_v because_o in_o such_o case_n their_o salvation_n will_v be_v their_o own_o legal_a purchase_n as_o be_v the_o reward_n of_o their_o own_o obedience_n and_o last_o to_o suppose_v the_o saviour_n to_o be_v therefore_o their_o saviour_n because_o he_o bestow_v upon_o they_o salvation_n in_o consideration_n of_o a_o imperfect_a obedience_n that_o be_v a_o obedience_n which_o be_v so_o far_o from_o deserve_a salvation_n that_o it_o do_v indeed_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o a_o pardon_n be_v to_o suppose_v he_o to_o bestow_v the_o reward_n there_o where_o the_o law_n do_v not_o lay_v it_o that_o be_v upon_o supposition_n that_o such_o law_n be_v just_a it_o be_v to_o suppose_v he_o to_o be_v unjust_a from_o all_o which_o the_o conclusion_n at_o last_o must_v be_v that_o since_o their_o saviour_n must_v save_v they_o for_o their_o exact_a obedience_n to_o the_o law_n if_o he_o save_v they_o just_o and_o since_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o he_o do_v save_v they_o just_o though_o they_o have_v pay_v no_o such_o obedience_n that_o therefore_o the_o method_n in_o which_o he_o save_v they_o be_v by_o entitle_v they_o to_o a_o perfect_a obedience_n now_o how_o that_o be_v do_v will_v be_v our_o business_n to_o make_v out_o as_o also_o that_o the_o manner_n of_o his_o do_v it_o be_v just_a and_o righteous_a and_o therefore_o reasonable_a by_o which_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o our_o present_a way_n of_o reason_v do_v not_o want_v its_o weight_n though_o perhaps_o it_o may_v at_o present_a seem_v too_o light_a to_o demand_v a_o assent_n but_o before_o we_o proceed_v to_o that_o we_o shall_v offer_v a_o few_o practical_a reflection_n upon_o what_o have_v be_v already_o lay_v down_o 1._o and_o first_o from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v we_o may_v easy_o perceive_v that_o god_n be_v not_o so_o fond_a of_o our_o person_n or_o of_o our_o future_a and_o everlasting_a happiness_n as_o to_o provide_v for_o such_o our_o happiness_n by_o his_o own_o neglect_n of_o his_o own_o law_n for_o heaven_n and_o earth_n shall_v pass_v away_o but_o one_o tittle_n of_o his_o law_n shall_v not_o do_v so_o though_o therefore_o we_o can_v easy_o allow_v ourselves_o to_o break_v his_o law_n and_o make_v light_a of_o his_o command_n yet_o we_o may_v therefore_o be_v sure_a that_o he_o will_v not_o do_v so_o because_o his_o command_n and_o his_o law_n be_v holy_a for_o it_o be_v a_o foolish_a and_o vain_a imagination_n to_o think_v that_o essential_a justice_n and_o holiness_n that_o be_v in_o other_o word_n that_o god_n will_v put_v slight_v upon_o himself_o to_o gratify_v those_o with_o impunity_n and_o much_o less_o with_o glory_n and_o immortality_n who_o put_v slight_v upon_o holiness_n by_o sin_v against_o his_o law_n the_o truth_n of_o it_o be_v because_o we_o be_v fond_a of_o ourselves_o and_o very_o desirous_a of_o our_o own_o happiness_n we_o be_v ay!_o and_o the_o very_o best_a of_o we_o too_o too_o apt_a to_o think_v that_o god_n be_v so_o too_o and_o in_o this_o case_n we_o be_v foolish_o incline_v to_o think_v he_o to_o be_v altogether_o such_o a_o one_o as_o ourselves_o and_o consider_v that_o both_o his_o mercy_n and_o his_o justice_n be_v guide_v by_o his_o holiness_n and_o that_o as_o he_o will_v not_o punish_v we_o without_o our_o demerit_n so_o neither_o will_v he_o reward_v we_o unless_o we_o become_v righteous_a i_o say_v if_o we_o will_v but_o serious_o consider_v this_o it_o may_v be_v a_o effectual_a mean_n to_o engage_v we_o to_o look_v better_o to_o our_o way_n lest_o whilst_o we_o think_v we_o be_v on_o our_o journey_n towards_o happiness_n we_o be_v find_v by_o mistake_n to_o tread_v in_o the_o broad_a road_n that_o lead_v to_o destruction_n 2._o from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v we_o may_v learn_v where_o to_o seek_v and_o to_o find_v what_o we_o do_v all_o natural_o desire_n and_o that_o be_v happiness_n i_o say_v we_o may_v learn_v that_o it_o be_v only_o to_o be_v seek_v wise_o and_o to_o be_v find_v certain_o in_o the_o way_n of_o holiness_n for_o though_o our_o sin_n may_v be_v expiate_v by_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n yet_o when_o we_o have_v make_v ourselves_o sinner_n we_o be_v not_o sure_a that_o we_o shall_v be_v make_v partaker_n of_o such_o expiation_n and_o so_o we_o be_v not_o sure_a of_o the_o pardon_n of_o such_o our_o sin_n and_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o without_o return_v to_o the_o path_n of_o holiness_n we_o shall_v not_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o such_o expiation_n and_o that_o therefore_o we_o shall_v only_o enjoy_v the_o benefit_n of_o it_o when_o we_o be_v find_v in_o such_o path_n the_o most_o certain_a mean_n therefore_o of_o make_v ourselves_o happy_a will_v be_v by_o keep_v ourselves_o holy_a for_o so_o long_o as_o we_o do_v so_o we_o keep_v ourselves_o within_o the_o reach_n of_o the_o gospel-promises_a and_o though_o our_o holiness_n be_v not_o in_o this_o world_n perfect_a yet_o as_o we_o shall_v see_v short_o god_n will_v provide_v a_o way_n to_o make_v that_o and_o our_o happiness_n perfect_a in_o another_o world_n 3._o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v we_o may_v learn_v how_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o we_o have_v no_o sincere_a and_o entire_a happiness_n in_o this_o world_n and_o that_o be_v because_o we_o have_v not_o here_o any_o sincere_a and_o entire_a holiness_n for_o be_v we_o free_v from_o all_o sin_n we_o shall_v be_v also_o free_v from_o all_o misery_n for_o we_o mistake_v if_o we_o do_v not_o think_v that_o cross_n losle_n pain_n sickness_n and_o death_n be_v all_o of_o they_o the_o effect_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o they_o therefore_o be_v so_o because_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o when_o our_o sin_n be_v do_v away_o all_o these_o misery_n shall_v be_v take_v away_o too_o no_o sin_n be_v mix_v with_o our_o life_n that_o spot_n stain_n and_o corrupt_v it_o and_o so_o affliction_n and_o misery_n come_v to_o be_v mix_v with_o it_o too_o and_o therefore_o be_v sin_n once_o banish_v out_o of_o this_o low_a world_n and_o true_a righteousness_n plant_v in_o its_o place_n be_v god_n will_v do_v in_o earth_n as_o it_o be_v do_v in_o heaven_n his_o kingdom_n will_v present_o come_v and_o the_o glory_n and_o beatitude_n of_o heaven_n will_v certain_o flow_v in_o upon_o all_o those_o who_o have_v arrive_v to_o a_o perfect_a that_o be_v to_o a_o heavenly_a holiness_n since_o therefore_o we_o may_v be_v so_o easy_o satisfy_v that_o it_o be_v sin_n and_o sin_n alone_o that_o impair_v our_o happiness_n and_o that_o too_o that_o happiness_n which_o most_o of_o we_o love_n so_o well_o our_o happiness_n in_o this_o world_n one_o will_v think_v that_o this_o consideration_n single_a and_o by_o its_o self_n shall_v engage_v we_o to_o hate_v sin_n as_o much_o as_o we_o love_v such_o our_o happiness_n and_o therefore_o also_o to_o endeavour_v to_o increase_v our_o happiness_n by_o destroy_v our_o sin_n 4._o if_o our_o good_a work_n be_v so_o full_a of_o flaw_n and_o imperfection_n that_o in_o order_n to_o our_o salvation_n it_o will_v be_v necessary_a that_o we_o be_v entitle_v to_o a_o perfect_a obedience_n then_o this_o may_v instruct_v we_o not_o to_o trust_v in_o they_o alone_o for_o our_o salvation_n for_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o we_o can_v be_v save_v without_o they_o yet_o it_o be_v as_o true_a that_o we_o can_v be_v save_v by_o they_o alone_o because_o a_o imperfect_a cause_n can_v never_o produce_v a_o perfect_a effect_n such_o salvation_n then_o as_o the_o gospel_n have_v teach_v we_o to_o hope_v and_o expect_v god_n in_o our_o saviour_n only_o can_v bestow_v but_o we_o can_v never_o by_o our_o good_a work_n deserve_v and_o therefore_o even_o he_o who_o have_v wrought_v out_o such_o salvation_n for_o we_o have_v teach_v we_o when_o we_o have_v do_v the_o best_a we_o can_v still_o to_o confess_v ourselves_o unprofitable_a servant_n 5._o last_o if_o no_o man_n obedience_n be_v perfect_a in_o this_o world_n than_o it_o will_v but_o ill_o become_v we_o to_o boast_v of_o our_o perfection_n here_o which_o in_o this_o latter_a age_n have_v be_v the_o know_a practice_n of_o several_a proud_a seducer_n and_o enthusiast_n who_o have_v therefore_o despise_v all_o other_o christian_n but_o those_o of_o their_o own_o cast_n or_o sect_n as_o
salvation_n as_o he_o have_v already_o do_v so_o to_o some_o and_o that_o he_o will_v also_o make_v they_o acquaint_v with_o the_o condition_n that_o he_o require_v of_o they_o in_o order_n to_o their_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o such_o salvation_n that_o be_v he_o will_v make_v they_o acquaint_v with_o jesus_n christ_n their_o saviour_n and_o with_o his_o doctrine_n and_o law_n and_o then_o to_o come_v up_o close_o to_o that_o design_n at_o which_o we_o have_v all_o along_o aim_v since_o we_o know_v by_o experience_n that_o god_n have_v not_o by_o any_o mean_v make_v all_o man_n acquaint_v with_o these_o thing_n in_o this_o life_n that_o therefore_o he_o will_v do_v it_o in_o a_o future_a life_n and_o it_o seem_v to_o i_o that_o he_o have_v give_v we_o sufficient_a ground_n to_o believe_v that_o he_o will_v do_v so_o in_o those_o very_a revelation_n which_o he_o have_v already_o afford_v we_o to_o guide_v we_o in_o the_o way_n of_o salvat_fw-la on_o for_o though_o the_o generality_n of_o christian_n and_o by_o their_o way_n of_o word_v themselves_o whether_o in_o their_o popular_a discourse_n or_o in_o their_o write_n one_o will_v be_v incline_v to_o think_v that_o the_o generality_n of_o divine_n too_o do_v conceive_v that_o the_o resurrection_n of_o all_o man_n will_v be_v cause_v at_o one_o and_o the_o same_o time_n perhaps_o invite_v to_o such_o a_o persuasion_n because_o as_o the_o scripture_n do_v tell_v we_o that_o a_o resurrection_n be_v in_o order_n to_o a_o general_n judgement_n so_o they_o do_v assign_v but_o one_o day_n to_o that_o judgement_n call_v therefore_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n yet_o we_o may_v do_v well_o to_o consider_v that_o short_a and_o general_a expression_n be_v very_o seldom_o complete_a and_o full_a narrative_n and_o if_o in_o this_o very_a case_n the_o scripture_n where_o they_o descend_v to_o a_o more_o particular_a account_n of_o the_o matter_n do_v give_v we_o in_o a_o different_a information_n and_o so_o do_v assure_v we_o that_o the_o resurrection_n of_o all_o man_n shall_v not_o be_v at_o one_o and_o the_o same_o time_n but_o that_o there_o be_v a_o distinct_a period_n of_o time_n set_v out_o for_o the_o resurrection_n of_o some_o man_n from_o that_o which_o be_v appoint_v for_o the_o resurrection_n of_o other_o then_o we_o hope_v it_o will_v not_o be_v think_v a_o extravagance_n if_o we_o shall_v assert_v that_o there_o will_v be_v more_o resurrection_n than_o one_o or_o which_o perhaps_o speak_v our_o mean_v plain_o that_o several_a sort_n of_o man_n according_a to_o the_o tariety_n of_o their_o behaviour_n and_o other_o their_o circumstance_n in_o this_o world_n shall_v be_v raise_v not_o only_o in_o different_a condition_n but_o also_o at_o differeut_n time_n in_o the_o next_o world_n and_o those_o time_n too_o as_o will_v appear_v from_o what_o will_v be_v speak_v hereafter_o at_o distance_n considerable_o remote_a from_o each_o other_o now_o the_o scripture_n in_o the_o twenty_o chapter_n of_o the_o revelation_n do_v acquaint_v we_o with_o a_o threefold_a resurrection_n 1._o the_o first_o be_v of_o those_o man_n who_o be_v martyr_n for_o jesus_n and_o for_o the_o word_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n ver_fw-la 4._o by_o which_o i_o understand_v all_o the_o faithful_a in_o christ_n though_o i_o do_v not_o in_o this_o place_n contend_v the_o truth_n of_o such_o exposition_n because_o i_o shall_v have_v occasion_n to_o speak_v to_o it_o hereafter_o 2._o the_o second_o resurrection_n be_v in_o ver_fw-la 5._o where_o we_o be_v tell_v and_o though_o it_o follow_v in_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o the_o five_o verse_n this_n be_v the_o first_o resurrection_n yet_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o that_o can_v be_v mean_v of_o the_o resurrection_n in_o the_o five_o verse_n because_o we_o have_v be_v before_o make_v acquaint_v with_o a_o resurrection_n which_o be_v a_o thousand_o year_n before_o it_o i_o therefore_o take_v the_o whole_a sentence_n in_o the_o former_a part_n of_o the_o five_o verse_n but_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o dead_a live_v not_o till_o the_o thousand_o year_n be_v finish_v to_o be_v proleptical_a and_o to_o come_v in_o in_o a_o parenthesis_n for_o indeed_o their_o proper_a place_n be_v between_o the_o six_o and_o seven_o verse_n let_v we_o therefore_o see_v how_o the_o sense_n will_v go_v if_o we_o remove_v they_o from_o the_o place_n where_o they_o stand_v at_o present_a and_o place_v they_o between_o the_o six_o and_o seven_o verse_n ver._n 4._o and_o they_o live_v and_o reign_v with_o christ_n a_o thousand_o year_n ver._n 5._o this_o be_v the_o first_o resurrection_n ver._n 6._o bless_a and_o holy_a be_v he_o that_o have_v part_n in_o the_o first_o resurrection_n on_o such_o the_o secord_n death_n have_v no_o power_n but_o they_o shall_v be_v priest_n of_o god_n and_o of_o christ_n and_o shall_v reign_v with_o he_o a_o thousand_o year_n now_o if_o in_o this_o place_n we_o bring_v in_o those_o word_n in_o the_o five_o verse_n but_o the_o rest_n etc._n etc._n the_o sense_n will_v go_v thus_o ver._n 5._o but_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o dead_a live_v not_o again_o until_o the_o thousand_o year_n be_v finish_v ver._n 7._o and_o when_o the_o thousand_o year_n be_v expire_v satan_n shall_v be_v loose_v out_o of_o his_o prison_n and_o shall_v go_v out_o to_o deceive_v the_o nation_n etc._n etc._n by_o which_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o if_o the_o sentence_n at_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o five_o verse_n be_v remove_v and_o place_v between_o the_o six_o and_o seventh-verse_n than_o the_o sense_n and_o the_o discourse_n concern_v both_o the_o first_o and_o second_o resurrection_n will_v be_v entire_a and_o continue_a and_o also_o will_v be_v plain_a easy_a and_o natural_a now_o from_o the_o word_n thus_o restore_v to_o their_o natural_a and_o true_a order_n we_o do_v to_o our_o present_a purpose_n take_v notice_n 1._o that_o they_o who_o have_v behave_v themselves_o as_o faithful_a christian_n in_o this_o life_n shall_v be_v raise_v first_o in_o the_o next_o life_n 1_o cor._n chap._n 15._o ver_fw-la 23._o 2._o that_o they_o shall_v reign_v with_o he_o shall_v judge_v both_o wicked_a angel_n and_o men._n 6._o that_o as_o our_o saviour_n after_o his_o own_o resurrection_n continue_v upon_o earth_n forty_o day_n and_o then_o ascend_v into_o heaven_n so_o his_o people_n shall_v upon_o their_o resurrection_n continue_v with_o he_o upon_o earth_n a_o thousand_o year_n and_o
be_v that_o roar_a lion_n who_o go_v about_o seek_v who_o he_o may_v devour_v that_o be_v that_o the_o business_n and_o design_n of_o his_o temptation_n be_v the_o destruction_n of_o soul_n and_o for_o that_o reason_n we_o may_v also_o know_v that_o the_o main_a design_n of_o his_o temptation_n or_o deceit_n in_o the_o text_n must_v be_v to_o seduce_v the_o people_n there_o mention_v from_o believe_v in_o and_o receive_v the_o saviour_n and_o by_o consequence_n from_o obtain_v salvation_n from_o all_o which_o we_o do_v conclude_v that_o to_o qualify_v these_o people_n for_o the_o far_a mercy_n of_o the_o saviour_n over_o and_o beyond_o the_o resurrection_n which_o i_o shall_v in_o this_o place_n adventure_n to_o call_v his_o general_n and_o unconditional_a purchase_n we_o may_v suppose_v 1._o that_o the_o saviour_n shall_v be_v then_o tender_v to_o they_o for_o not_o have_v hear_v of_o he_o in_o this_o life_n they_o have_v no_o possibility_n either_o of_o receive_v or_o reject_v he_o here_o as_o the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n have_v 2._o that_o after_o they_o be_v upon_o their_o resurrection_n make_v acquaint_v with_o the_o saviour_n they_o shall_v be_v put_v upon_o the_o same_o probation_n whether_o they_o will_v receive_v he_o upon_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o those_o be_v who_o have_v hear_v of_o he_o and_o the_o gospel-condition_n in_o this_o life_n 3._o that_o if_o upon_o such_o their_o probation_n they_o do_v receive_v he_o they_o shall_v then_o be_v in_o the_o same_o happy_a condition_n in_o which_o they_o now_o be_v who_o do_v receive_v he_o in_o this_o life_n and_o who_o do_v therefore_o enjoy_v the_o happiness_n of_o the_o first_o resurrection_n for_o we_o may_v reasonable_o judge_v that_o if_o upon_o their_o resurrection_n they_o do_v receive_v he_o that_o then_o they_o shall_v die_v no_o more_o as_o they_o who_o be_v alive_a at_o his_o first_o come_v which_o come_v do_v still_o continue_v do_v not_o die_v but_o be_v catch_v up_o to_o he_o and_o perhaps_o for_o this_o reason_n the_o text_n do_v only_o account_v for_o the_o death_n of_o those_o of_o this_o second_o resurrection_n who_o oppose_v the_o saviour_n and_o besiege_v the_o belove_a city_n and_o if_o we_o suppose_v such_o a_o process_n in_o this_o affair_n as_o indeed_o the_o circumstance_n seem_v to_o allow_v we_o more_o than_o bare_o to_o suppose_v it_o it_o will_v upon_o such_o supposition_n be_v find_v exact_o to_o answer_v and_o agree_v with_o the_o proceed_n at_o the_o first_o come_v of_o our_o saviour_n to_o raise_v the_o righteous_a for_o as_o than_o they_o who_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o be_v alive_a in_o the_o earth_n do_v not_o die_v at_o all_o but_o be_v catch_v up_o to_o meet_v the_o lord_n in_o the_o air_n so_o here_o those_z who_o upon_o their_o resurrection_n receive_v and_o believe_v in_o the_o saviour_n then_o make_v know_v to_o they_o shall_v not_o die_v but_o shall_v be_v take_v to_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o shall_v escape_v that_o fire_n from_o heaven_n which_o will_v destroy_v all_o the_o rest_n who_o besiege_v the_o belove_a city_n just_o as_o the_o righteous_a at_o the_o begin_n of_o this_o our_o saviour_n come_v be_v catch_v up_o to_o meet_v the_o lord_n in_o the_o air_n and_o so_o escape_v the_o general_a conflagration_n which_o ensue_v 1._o now_o from_o all_o that_o have_v be_v say_v the_o answer_n to_o the_o first_o question_n will_v be_v that_o they_o who_o shall_v be_v raise_v by_o that_o which_o we_o have_v call_v the_o second_o resurrection_n be_v all_o those_o who_o never_o have_v have_v the_o offer_n of_o a_o saviour_n make_v to_o they_o in_o this_o life_n 2._o from_o which_o we_o may_v gain_v a_o easy_a answer_n to_o the_o second_o question_n which_o be_v why_o the_o devil_n be_v let_v loose_a to_o deceive_v they_o the_o reason_n of_o which_o be_v because_o they_o be_v to_o undergo_v the_o same_o probation_n upon_o the_o offer_n of_o the_o saviour_n to_o they_o which_o those_o undergo_v who_o in_o this_o life_n have_v the_o same_o offer_n for_o it_o be_v just_a and_o equitable_a that_o they_o shall_v undergo_v the_o same_o trial_n with_o those_o of_o the_o first_o resurrection_n for_o this_o reason_n because_o all_o mankind_n have_v by_o sin_n become_v voluntary_a subject_n to_o satan_n it_o be_v neither_o agreeable_a to_o the_o divine_a justice_n nor_o indeed_o to_o the_o rule_n of_o reason_n in_o general_n to_o rescue_v any_o of_o they_o from_o such_o subjection_n without_o their_o own_o voluntary_a consent_n for_o in_o order_n to_o their_o return_n to_o their_o original_a subjection_n to_o god_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o they_o become_v good_a and_o holy_a and_o in_o order_n to_o their_o become_v so_o it_o be_v necessary_a and_o that_o too_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n that_o they_o be_v willing_a to_o become_v so_o as_o therefore_o the_o devil_n first_o bring_v they_o off_o from_o their_o subjection_n to_o god_n to_o that_o of_o himself_o by_o persuade_v they_o to_o consent_v that_o be_v to_o be_v willing_a to_o the_o revolt_n so_o god_n bring_v they_o back_o again_o only_o by_o persuade_v they_o to_o be_v willing_a to_o return_v for_o if_o on_o one_o side_n or_o the_o other_o either_o god_n or_o the_o devil_n shall_v force_v or_o compel_v they_o to_o their_o respective_a subjection_n they_o can_v by_o such_o force_n neither_o be_v make_v good_a nor_o bad_a that_o be_v they_o can_v not_o become_v subject_n to_o either_o because_o there_o can_v be_v no_o moral_a goodness_n or_o badness_n without_o the_o consent_n of_o his_o will_n who_o be_v good_a or_o bad_a since_o therefore_o god_n have_v make_v man_n a_o free_a agent_n and_o so_o capable_a of_o moral_a goodness_n do_v not_o force_v they_o to_o continue_v good_a when_o the_o devil_n first_o tempt_v they_o to_o be_v bad_a and_o so_o do_v not_o hinder_v the_o devil_n from_o tempt_v they_o to_o be_v bad_a at_o first_o neither_o will_v he_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n hinder_v the_o devil_n from_o tempt_v they_o to_o continue_v so_o no_o not_o when_o he_o himself_o do_v offer_v to_o they_o a_o saviour_n so_o that_o the_o offer_v of_o a_o saviour_n by_o god_n and_o his_o invitation_n and_o persuasion_n of_o man_n to_o receive_v such_o saviour_n on_o the_o one_o hand_n and_o the_o devil_n dissuasion_n and_o temptation_n of_o they_o from_o receive_v such_o saviour_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n be_v in_o some_o measure_n a_o counterpoise_n to_o each_o other_o the_o receive_v or_o refuse_v of_o the_o saviour_n become_v the_o act_n and_o deed_n of_o he_o to_o who_o he_o be_v tender_v and_o so_o in_o right_n and_o justice_n the_o consequential_a benefit_n of_o such_o receive_v and_o the_o consequential_a mischief_n of_o such_o
