To the Reader IN this second edition where it might be conveniently done I have made the paraphrase shoâ—ter but by reason that a work of this sort is for a people and children who are rude whereof many can not read but sing after the line is read I have shunned to be too concise lest brevitie should breed obscuritie and many should sing without understanding where two verses might be conveniently joined in four lines I have striven to do it but when I saw that either it made the verse harsh or obscure or that it behooved me to seeke other wordes then the words of the text I rather choised to make the paraphrase a little wider for to keep so far as I could the wordes of the text which is the most acurat version in my judgement that hitherto hath beene In some places obscure I have striven to make the paraphrase like a commentarie as for example PSAL. 76.4 Thou art more glorious and excellent then the mountaines of prey By those mountains of prey the Psalmist understands the enemies of Gods people that made the mountains their strength and from thence came to spoil them like those rebels and robbers that from the mountaines of Scotland have murdered and spoiled Gods Saints and made a prey of them but this is our comfort GOD is more glorious and excellent then the mountains of prey God at last will destroy them for PSAL. 95.4 The strength of the hills is his The Paraphrase Thou surely art more glorious and excellent alway Then the most mighty foes that be in mountains seeking prey Likewise PSAL. 87.7 As well singers as the players on instruments shal be there All my springs are in thee Those last words all my springs are in thee are difficle to many The Herbew is Col-majane bach that is Omnes fontes mei in te that is All my fountains or well-springs are in thee By those springs are understood the affections of the heart whence spring out the praises of the Lord as out of a fountaine The Paraphrase Both singers there and players al 's on instruments shall be All my best hearts affections as well-springs are in theee So have I done in diverse other places to make all clear and plain for the peoples use As for some hard passages where I found great diversitie of opinions of worthy learned men suspending my judgement did strive to keep the words of the text as PSAL. 110.3 In the beauties of holinesse from the womb of the morning thou hast the dew of thy youth Some take the beauties of holinesse to be the ornaments of the Sanctuary others referre them to the holy graces and vertues wherewithall the faithfull should bee beautified As for those words From the womb of the morning thou hast the dew of thy youth they are very hard Some by the womb of the morning understand the essence of the God-head that was early in the morning before the world was made denoting the eternall generation of Christ This seemes to have beene the minde of the Septuagint whose wordes are those Of the wombe before the morning Starre begat I thee Some take those words to be spoken of Christs man-hood who had the dew of his birth of the obscure wombe of the Virgin Some which I like best interpret this of Christs Church which is said From the wombe of the morning to have the dew of her youth that is as the dew in the morning aire is bred as in a a womb and falleth downe in many drops so the children of God the elected Ones shall in the Church be borne in great number by thee preaching of the Gospell Others give other interpretations because of such a diversitie of opinions I would not change a word of the text The Paraphrase In beauties of great holinesse with a most pleasant shew From the fair mornings womb thou hast evâ—n of thy youth the dew Likewise there is a great diversitie of opinions concerning those words PSAL. 24.6 This is the generation of them that seek him that seek thy face O Jacob. XXXIII O In the LORD alwayes rejoice ye righteous in his sight For praise is comely for all those that are in heart upright verse 2 Praise ye the Lord now with the harpe with psaltrie to him sing And also with an instrument that hath a tenfold string verse 3 Unto him a new pleasant song sing with your heart and voice Play also now most skilfully with a loud sounding noice verse 4 For the good word of God the Loâ—â— is faithfull still and right And all his glorious workes in truth are done by his great might verse 5 He righteousnesse with all his heaâ—â— and judgement loveth still The goodnesse of the Lord our God the earth doth ever fill verse 6 By the word of the mighty Lorâ— the heav'ns created were And by the breath even of his moâ— their host all every where verse 7 He gathreth waters of the sea together as an heap And as in store houses also he layeth up the deep verse 8 Let all the earth now humbly fear the LORD and keep his law Let all the earths inhabitants still of him stand in aw verse 9 For he spake in his mighty power and it was done at last As he desir'd he did command and it alwayes stood fast verse 10 The Lord to noght the counsel brings which heathen men project The peoples vain devices all he makes of none effect verse 11 The counsell of the Lord doth stand for ever free of fall Yea of his heart the thoughts shal last to generations all verse 12 Blest is the nation whose GOD is the LORD them to advance And people whom he chosen hath for his inheritance verse 13 The Lord from heav'n that is above down looketh with his eye He all the sons of men below most clearly thence doth see verse 14 From of his habitation high the place that doth excell He looketh down on those alwayes that on the earth do dwell verse 15 He fashioneth also all their heaâ—â— alike both great and small Their works al 's whether good or 〈◊〉 he them considreth all verse 16 There is no king whom of an hâ— the multitude can save And by much strength a mighty maâ— can no deliv'rance have verse 17 For mans safety a thing most 〈◊〉 an horse is seen at length Not any he deliver shall by his great power and strength verse 18 Behold the Lords eye ever is upon them that him fear Ev'n on them still that do alwayes hope in his mercy heer verse 19 For to deliver safe their soul even from the jawes of death And al 's to keep them safe alive in famine free of wrath verse 20 Our soul still alwayes for the LORD waits till he comfort send In dangers all he is our help and shield us to defend verse 21 For in him gladly shall our heart rejoice without all blame Because we surely trusted have in his most holy name verse 22 Let thy mercy O gracious LORD upon us ever be According as with all our heart we still do hope in thee PSAL. LXXXIX FOrever I 'll God 's mercies sing and with my mouth I shall â—ake clearly known thy faithfulnesse to generations all For mercy I have said shall be built up for ever sure â—hou in the heav'ns thy faithfulnesse shalt stablish to endure A cov'nant with my chosen I have made not to deceive To David my servant in truth solemnly sworn I have verse 4 Thy seed I stablish will most sure for ever CXV LOrd not to us not unto us but unto thy name take Great glory for thy stedfast truth and for thy mercies sake verse 2 Wherefore should new the heath 〈◊〉 where is their God alone But our God's in the heav'ns he hath what ever he pleased done Their idols silver are and gold workes of mens hands they be They have mouths made but can not speak and eyes but they not see Of ears they have the shape but they hear not what men do tell They noses formed also have but there with cannot smell They hands have but they handle not and feet but cannot walk A throat they have but throgh it they can no way speak or talk To those vain things they are most like that in their wayes unjust Them make ev'n so is every one that into them doth trust verse 9 Trust thou O Israel in the Lord their help and shield that be verse 10 Trust in the Lord O A'rons house their help and shield is he verse 11 Ye that do fear the living Lord trust in the Lord alway He is their strong help and their shield that still upon him stay verse 12 The Lord of us hath mindfull been he sure will blesse us still He will blesse Israls house the house of Aaron blesse he will verse 13 He wil them blesse that fear the Lord and that both great and small verse 14 God shal increase you more more you and your children all verse 15 You all that have an upright heart are blessed of the Lord Which both the heav'n al 's the earth made by his mighty word verse 16 The heav'n ye ev'n the heav'ns above are all the Lords by right But to the sons of men he hath the earth giv'n by his might verse 17 The dead in grave can in no way praise give the Lord unto Nor any whatsoever that down into 〈◊〉 go But we the mighty Lord above will blesse with one accord â—om this time forth for evermore most gladly praise the Lord.
