to_o they_o if_o man_n as_o they_o be_v wilful_o blind_a for_o a_o time_n can_v be_v blind_a always_o as_o they_o do_v not_o see_v these_o thing_n at_o first_o so_o they_o can_v choose_v whether_o and_o so_o those_o which_o have_v taste_v of_o god_n word_n they_o know_v the_o excellency_n and_o comfortableness_n which_o be_v in_o it_o and_o will_v desire_v it_o again_o and_o again_o three_o the_o communion_n of_o saint_n how_o pleasant_a likewise_o be_v this_o that_o holy_a conference_n and_o discourse_n which_o christian_n have_v one_o with_o another_o in_o provoke_v one_o another_o to_o love_n and_o good_a work_n in_o quicken_a one_o another_o grace_n in_o communicate_v one_o another_o experience_n in_o the_o enlarge_n of_o one_o another_o comfort_n as_o iron_n sharpen_v iron_n day_n of_o the_o lord_n come_v and_o be_v nigh_o at_o hand_n a_o day_n of_o darkness_n and_o of_o gloominess_n a_o day_n of_o cloud_n and_o of_o thick_a darkness_n and_o so_o also_o in_o zeph._n 1.15_o a_o day_n of_o wasteness_n and_o desolation_n a_o day_n of_o darkness_n and_o gloominess_n etc._n etc._n this_o be_v true_a of_o the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o full_a extent_n of_o it_o whether_o we_o take_v it_o of_o personal_a desolation_n the_o day_n of_o death_n or_o of_o national_a desolation_n the_o day_n of_o captivity_n or_o of_o general_a resurrection_n the_o day_n of_o judgement_n but_o still_o with_o this_o restriction_n as_o it_o refer_v to_o ungodly_a person_n and_o to_o impenitent_a sinner_n with_o respect_n have_v to_o such_o as_o these_o be_v be_v this_o day_n that_o which_o it_o be_v say_v here_o to_o be_v but_o especial_o as_o i_o say_v do_v it_o refer_v to_o the_o day_n of_o death_n and_o final_a judgement_n which_o be_v here_o intend_a this_o be_v forasmuch_o as_o darkness_n do_v contain_v in_o it_o all_o kind_n of_o sadness_n in_o which_o be_v fear_n and_o horror_n and_o solitariness_n and_o all_o kind_n of_o misery_n such_o be_v this_o day_n the_o like_a form_n of_o speech_n in_o reference_n to_o other_o matter_n which_o we_o meet_v withal_o in_o scripture_n thus_o deut._n 32.4_o speak_v of_o god_n a_o god_n of_o truth_n and_o without_o think_v that_o they_o be_v present_o heir_n of_o heaven_n and_o have_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n belong_v to_o they_o as_o they_o alas_o if_o it_o be_v no_o more_o than_o so_o with_o they_o their_o dark_a corner_n of_o the_o land_n where_o save_v only_o the_o name_n and_o notion_n of_o it_o people_n live_v in_o a_o condition_n little_a different_a even_o from_o pagan_n and_o heathen_n as_o be_v destitute_a of_o those_o personal_a qualification_n considerable_a and_o desirable_a in_o themselves_o in_o order_n to_o that_o condition_n likewise_o this_o i_o call_v a_o remoteness_n of_o term_n forasmuch_o as_o these_o two_o will_v never_o meet_v or_o come_v together_o so_o remain_v whether_o we_o take_v it_o for_o a_o remoteness_n of_o principle_n that_o be_v such_o a_o frame_n of_o spirit_n as_o do_v not_o suit_n with_o the_o temper_n of_o a_o christian_a or_o whether_o we_o take_v it_o for_o a_o remoteness_n of_o conversation_n that_o be_v such_o a_o tract_n and_o course_n of_o life_n as_o do_v not_o suit_n with_o a_o heavenly_a condition_n those_o which_o be_v under_o either_o of_o these_o distance_n they_o be_v far_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n we_o will_v for_o brevity_n sake_n join_v they_o both_o together_o because_o the_o one_o refer_v to_o the_o other_o and_o here_o there_o be_v divers_a sort_n of_o person_n which_o we_o may_v consider_v as_o at_o a_o very_a great_a distance_n in_o this_o behalf_n we_o will_v reduce_v they_o to_o three_o rank_n especial_o first_o all_o notorious_o wicked_a and_o profane_a and_o licentious_a person_n drunkard_n and_o whoremaster_n and_o swearer_n and_o profaner_n of_o the_o sabbath_n such_o person_n as_o live_v in_o idleness_n and_o all_o manner_n of_o debauchery_n these_o be_v far_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n with_o a_o witness_n there_o be_v no_o come_n for_o these_o to_o heaven_n at_o all_o while_o they_o continue_v in_o this_o wretched_a estate_n and_o it_o will_v cost_v they_o a_o great_a neither_o which_o in_o many_o thing_n be_v far_o beyond_o they_o and_o incomprehensible_a by_o they_o we_o must_v believe_v more_o than_o we_o understand_v and_o yet_o we_o must_v also_o understand_v why_o we_o believe_v the_o one_o respect_n the_o object_n of_o faith_n the_o other_o respect_v the_o ground_n of_o it_o than_o which_o there_o can_v be_v no_o better_o assign_v than_o the_o authority_n of_o god_n himself_o propound_v such_o thing_n to_o we_o to_o be_v receive_v and_o believe_v by_o we_o even_o there_o where_o we_o do_v not_o present_o apprehend_v the_o dependence_n and_o connexion_n of_o they_o immediate_o in_o the_o proposition_n itself_o this_o be_v that_o which_o we_o may_v take_v notice_n of_o this_o person_n in_o his_o discourse_n here_o with_o christ_n that_o he_o mind_v what_o he_o say_v he_o do_v not_o speak_v loose_o and_o at_o random_n but_o discreet_o that_o be_v intelligent_o as_o to_o matter_n of_o judgement_n but_o second_o that_o be_v not_o all_o there_o be_v another_o thing_n which_o we_o may_v take_v in_o to_o this_o head_n it_o be_v cordate_v too_o as_o to_o matter_n of_o affection_n he_o be_v hearty_a and_o serious_a in_o it_o he_o speak_v as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v some_o savour_n of_o that_o which_o he_o speak_v which_o be_v the_o main_a thing_n of_o all_o and_o most_o to_o be_v regard_v by_o we_o the_o speech_n of_o this_o scribe_n if_o you_o take_v it_o simple_o in_o itself_o without_o somewhat_o else_o beside_o to_o make_v it_o up_o it_o be_v no_o necessary_a or_o infallible_a argument_n of_o the_o goodness_n of_o his_o estate_n in_o grace_n for_o a_o man_n may_v be_v right_a as_o to_o the_o theory_n of_o religion_n and_o yet_o come_v short_a of_o the_o practice_n a_o man_n may_v be_v sound_a as_o to_o matter_n of_o knowledge_n and_o the_o apprehension_n of_o a_o spiritual_a truth_n and_o yet_o not_o come_v up_o to_o the_o power_n and_o improvement_n of_o it_o a_o man_n may_v be_v a_o orthodox_n divine_a and_o yet_o but_o a_o sorry_a christian_a he_o may_v be_v very_o well_o skilled_a in_o all_o the_o mystery_n and_o doctrine_n of_o theology_n and_o yet_o be_v far_o enough_o off_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n this_o business_n it_o do_v not_o hold_v convertible_o and_o by_o way_n of_o reciprocation_n a_o man_n can_v be_v corrupt_a in_o his_o judgement_n as_o to_o the_o substantial_o and_o essential_o of_o religion_n and_o the_o work_n of_o save_a grace_n in_o the_o heart_n but_o he_o must_v needs_o be_v thereby_o discover_v to_o be_v void_a of_o save_a grace_n itself_o also_o naught_o and_o rot_a in_o his_o heart_n but_o a_o man_n may_v be_v sound_a in_o his_o judgement_n in_o such_o point_n and_o doctrine_n as_o these_o be_v and_o yet_o not_o necessary_o have_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n in_o he_o unless_o what_o he_o hold_v in_o his_o judgement_n he_o do_v also_o love_n and_o embrace_v in_o his_o heart_n and_o close_o withal_o in_o his_o inward_a man_n this_o be_v that_o other_o thing_n appear_v in_o the_o answer_n of_o this_o scribe_n for_o it_o be_v with_o modest_o and_o humility_n and_o teachableness_n and_o submission_n to_o christ_n as_o we_o may_v observe_v if_o upon_o the_o point_n even_o eternal_a life_n itself_o it_o be_v because_o he_o have_v great_a possession_n or_o rather_o because_o he_o have_v a_o heart_n too_o great_o set_v upon_o they_o and_o too_o deep_o affect_v with_o they_o and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n according_o make_v that_o improvement_n of_o it_o how_o hardly_o shall_v they_o that_o have_v riches_n enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n it_o be_v easy_a for_o a_o camel_n to_o go_v through_o the_o eye_n of_o a_o needle_n etc._n etc._n luke_n 18.24_o 25._o a_o covetous_a heart_n will_v never_o prize_v this_o one_o thing_n nor_o care_n for_o attain_v unto_o it_o and_o so_o for_o any_o other_o lust_n beside_o where_o it_o be_v in_o the_o tyranny_n and_o prevalency_n of_o it_o it_o scorn_v happiness_n and_o salvation_n itself_o therefore_o i_o say_v take_v heed_n of_o lust_n and_o remember_v to_o look_v at_o the_o main_a chance_n we_o shall_v let_v no_o day_n pass_v over_o our_o head_n wherein_o we_o do_v not_o do_v they_o from_o better_a thing_n now_o here_o this_o counsel_n and_o advertisement_n be_v very_o seasonable_a to_o remember_v the_o one_o thing_n necessary_a we_o must_v here_o distinguish_v betwixt_o wit_n and_o grace_n betwixt_o fancy_n and_o faith_n betwixt_o empty_a notion_n and_o speculation_n and_o solid_a and_o substantial_a truth_n these_o doctrine_n be_v worth_a the_o study_v and_o strive_v and_o contend_v for_o which_o will_v make_v a_o man_n wise_a to_o saulation_n and_o build_v one_o up_o in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n which_o will_v better_v we_o in_o our_o inward_a man_n and_o which_o tend_v to_o the_o lead_n of_o a_o godly_a and_o a_o holy_a life_n and_o according_a hereunto_o be_v we_o to_o make_v proof_n and_o trial_n of_o they_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o they_o be_v from_o god_n or_o no_o by_o this_o discovery_n whatsoever_o come_v from_o he_o it_o carry_v to_o he_o those_o opinion_n which_o be_v good_a for_o nothing_o but_o only_o to_o show_v the_o wit_n and_o part_n of_o those_o that_o vent_v they_o to_o set_v christian_n at_o difference_n and_o variance_n one_o with_o another_o or_o at_o the_o best_a to_o fill_v their_o head_n with_o fancy_n and_o subtlety_n and_o conceit_n those_o opinion_n which_o be_v compliance_n with_o the_o principle_n of_o a_o carnal_a heart_n which_o set_v up_o reason_n in_o the_o room_n of_o faith_n and_o nature_n in_o the_o room_n of_o grace_n and_o work_v in_o the_o room_n of_o christ_n such_o as_o these_o they_o may_v be_v very_o well_o suspect_v and_o so_o consequent_o be_v to_o be_v reject_v by_o we_o but_o those_o be_v the_o prime_a point_n indeed_o which_o have_v a_o contrary_a efficacy_n with_o they_o to_o the_o change_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o the_o discovery_n of_o a_o man_n corrupt_a nature_n to_o the_o draw_v of_o a_o man_n home_o to_o christ_n and_o so_o thereby_o to_o bring_v he_o to_o heaven_n and_o such_o as_o these_o shall_v be_v chief_o study_v and_o pursue_v by_o we_o and_o so_o the_o scripture_n itself_o to_o this_o purpose_n give_v we_o direction_n thus_o 2_o tim._n 2.14_o 16._o charge_v they_o before_o the_o lord_n that_o they_o strive_v not_o about_o word_n to_o no_o profit_n but_o to_o the_o subvert_v of_o the_o hearer_n and_o again_o shun_v profane_a and_o vain_a babble_n for_o they_o will_v increase_v unto_o more_o ungodliness_n tit._n 3.9_o avoid_v foolish_a question_n and_o genealogy_n etc._n etc._n for_o they_o be_v unprofitable_a and_o vain_a this_o be_v that_o which_o many_o people_n in_o the_o world_n be_v often_o time_n fail_v in_o as_o not_o walk_v by_o this_o rule_n here_o before_o we_o in_o this_o particular_a they_o never_o consider_v the_o influence_n or_o extent_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o they_o hold_v as_o to_o the_o make_n of_o a_o man_n better_o or_o worse_a but_o indifferent_o rush_v upon_o they_o without_o any_o heed_n or_o regard_n at_o all_o nay_o there_o be_v many_o which_o make_v choice_n of_o such_o point_n as_o may_v most_o feed_v corruption_n in_o they_o as_o they_o do_v sometime_o also_o of_o other_o occasion_n there_o be_v many_o that_o bring_v their_o opinion_n to_o their_o lust_n and_o make_v their_o judgement_n to_o be_v subservient_fw-fr to_o their_o affection_n those_o point_n which_o will_v best_o consist_v with_o the_o follow_v of_o such_o and_o such_o course_n those_o be_v the_o point_n which_o be_v most_o embrace_v and_o admire_v by_o they_o those_o that_o be_v for_o loose_a life_n they_o be_v common_o for_o loose_a opinion_n which_o may_v nourish_v and_o cherish_v and_o maintain_v those_o life_n in_o they_o they_o begin_v not_o first_o of_o all_o in_o the_o head_n but_o rather_o in_o the_o heart_n as_o a_o faulty_a and_o corrupt_a stomach_n send_v up_o noisome_a vapour_n into_o the_o brain_n for_o which_o reason_n heresy_n be_v by_o the_o apostle_n call_v work_n of_o the_o flesh_n because_o the_o flesh_n and_o corrupt_a affection_n have_v a_o great_a stroke_n and_o predominancy_n in_o they_o for_o the_o manage_n of_o they_o now_o by_o a_o regard_n to_o this_o one_o thing_n necessary_a there_o will_v be_v a_o shun_v and_o avoid_v of_o these_o thing_n second_o in_o the_o duty_n and_o exercise_n of_o religion_n look_v still_o at_o the_o one_o thing_n which_o be_v needful_a and_o that_o according_a to_o the_o particular_a nature_n and_o quality_n of_o they_o there_o be_v many_o religious_a performance_n which_o have_v that_o which_o be_v mere_o accessary_a to_o they_o and_o we_o be_v to_o separate_v and_o distinguish_v the_o circumstance_n from_o that_o which_o be_v substantial_a and_o to_o have_v our_o eye_n chief_o to_o the_o latter_a as_o that_o which_o be_v most_o necessary_a not_o to_o rest_v ourselves_o in_o the_o shell_n of_o duty_n but_o to_o look_v after_o the_o pith_n and_o kernel_n nor_o to_o perform_v it_o plausible_o so_o much_o as_o to_o perform_v it_o profitable_o and_o to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o god_n himself_o by_o his_o spirit_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o it_o in_o prayer_n to_o pray_v in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o hear_v to_o receive_v the_o word_n with_o meekness_n in_o fast_v to_o afflict_v the_o soul_n in_o communicate_v to_o feed_v upon_o christ_n and_o so_o of_o the_o rest_n still_o in_o every_o exercise_n of_o religion_n and_o christian_a performance_n not_o to_o have_v only_o the_o form_n of_o godliness_n but_o to_o look_v after_o the_o power_n as_o that_o wherein_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n do_v especial_o consist_v three_o in_o our_o employment_n and_o the_o work_n of_o our_o ordinary_a calling_n let_v we_o have_v a_o eye_n also_o still_o to_o this_o consider_v what_o that_o be_v which_o be_v principal_o require_v of_o we_o there_o be_v a_o double_a end_n and_o use_v of_o these_o thing_n the_o one_o be_v as_o they_o be_v mean_n of_o supportment_n and_o outward_a subsistence_n in_o the_o world_n and_o so_o serve_v to_o make_v up_o a_o livelihood_n and_o the_o other_o be_v as_o he_o with_o the_o brightness_n of_o his_o come_n and_o so_o he_o shall_v and_o all_o such_o person_n as_o do_v adhere_v unto_o he_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n shall_v scatter_v the_o spirit_n of_o antichrist_n and_o the_o wind_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n shall_v confound_v the_o wind_n of_o the_o evil_a spirit_n and_o what_o ever_o be_v attempt_v by_o it_o this_o be_v a_o very_a comfortable_a point_n in_o all_o the_o assault_n and_o temptation_n of_o satan_n and_o his_o endeavour_n either_o against_o the_o church_n in_o general_n or_o against_o any_o particular_a member_n of_o it_o every_o christian_a be_v thus_o far_o secure_a and_o in_o good_a condition_n as_o he_o have_v this_o wind_n as_o i_o may_v so_o say_v for_o he_o which_o be_v sure_a to_o blow_v he_o nothing_o but_o good_a different_a and_o various_a wind_n which_o blow_v now_o and_o then_o both_o upon_o the_o church_n and_o likewise_o upon_o the_o soul_n but_o they_o be_v all_o order_v and_o regulate_v by_o he_o therefore_o we_o find_v in_o the_o canticle_n how_o it_o be_v christ_n himself_o that_o stir_v up_o his_o spirit_n for_o the_o good_a of_o his_o spouse_n awake_v o_o northwind_n and_o come_v thou_o its_o effect_n in_o those_o word_n and_o thou_o hear_v the_o sound_n thereof_o the_o wind_n it_o come_v with_o a_o sound_n and_o so_o do_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n it_o do_v so_o in_o its_o first_o come_v of_o all_o when_o it_o come_v upon_o the_o apostle_n on_o the_o day_n of_o pentecost_n there_o come_v sudden_o a_o sound_n from_o heaven_n as_o of_o a_o rush_v mighty_a wind_n and_o it_o fill_v all_o the_o house_n where_o they_o be_v sit_v act_v 2.4_o and_o so_o it_o be_v still_o to_o this_o present_a day_n in_o a_o proportion_n it_o have_v a_o sound_n and_o such_o as_o may_v be_v hear_v now_o thus_o it_o be_v in_o a_o two_o fold_v consideration_n the_o one_o be_v the_o sound_n of_o it_o in_o the_o ear_n and_o the_o other_o be_v the_o sound_n of_o it_o in_o the_o conscience_n first_o there_o be_v the_o sound_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o ear_n and_o that_o be_v in_o the_o external_a preach_v of_o the_o word_n and_o ministerial_a dispensation_n where_o this_o be_v perform_v as_o it_o shall_v be_v it_o be_v no_o other_o than_o the_o sound_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o voice_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n himself_o speak_v to_o we_o their_o sound_n be_v go_v forth_o into_o all_o the_o earth_n and_o their_o word_n unto_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n rom._n 10.18_o this_o be_v such_o a_o sound_n as_o may_v be_v hear_v and_o it_o be_v a_o mercy_n to_o hear_v it_o and_o denominate_v as_o be_v so_o after_o a_o more_o peculiar_a manner_n the_o whole_a world_n be_v god_n house_n in_o some_o sort_n as_o wherein_o he_o manifest_v his_o wisdom_n and_o power_n but_o the_o church_n be_v so_o more_o especial_o and_o that_o in_o the_o full_a latitude_n and_o extent_n of_o it_o whether_o the_o church_n militant_a or_o triumphant_a the_o militant_a church_n as_o that_o wherein_o he_o manifest_v his_o grace_n and_o the_o triumphant_a as_o wherein_o he_o manifest_v his_o glory_n as_o for_o the_o former_a of_o these_o house_n to_o wit_n the_o church_n militant_a here_o enough_o for_o the_o lodging_n of_o all_o his_o child_n so_o that_o none_o of_o they_o need_n to_o be_v exclude_v or_o shut_v out_o of_o door_n there_o be_v room_n not_o only_o for_o one_o or_o two_o of_o they_o but_o for_o all_o the_o rest_n this_o be_v the_o scope_n of_o the_o text_n as_o interpreter_n general_o carry_v it_o to_o meet_v with_o the_o jealousy_n and_o suspicion_n which_o be_v at_o heaven_n there_o be_v all_o desirable_a enlargement_n no_o envy_v or_o repine_v at_o one_o another_o no_o hinder_v or_o obstruct_v of_o one_o another_o no_o trouble_v or_o molest_v of_o one_o another_o but_o all_o the_o freedom_n and_o conveniency_n that_o may_v be_v here_o in_o the_o world_n god_n servant_n they_o be_v oftentimes_o to_o seek_v and_o destitute_a of_o a_o place_n of_o many_o mansion_n that_o be_v there_o be_v abode_n and_o continuance_n still_o in_o it_o so_o that_o those_o who_o take_v possession_n of_o it_o once_o they_o enjoy_v it_o for_o ever_o this_o be_v another_o privilege_n and_o accommodation_n which_o be_v here_o include_v and_o considerable_a of_o we_o the_o apostle_n paul_n when_o he_o speak_v of_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o heaven_n say_v we_o shall_v ever_o be_v with_o the_o lord_n 1_o thess_n 4.17_o and_o st._n john_n to_o the_o like_a purpose_n the_o world_n pass_v away_o and_o the_o lust_n thereof_o but_o he_o that_o
