glory_n and_o excellency_n so_o far_o as_o therein_o shine_v the_o glory_n skill_n and_o wisdom_n of_o the_o creator_n more_o than_o in_o any_o other_o creature_n in_o which_o regard_n it_o be_v no_o perfect_a happiness_n and_o be_v not_o there_o freedom_n from_o the_o devil_n sin_n and_o death_n and_o be_v it_o not_o the_o court_n of_o god_n the_o king_n of_o glory_n then_o why_o do_v we_o not_o sigh_v and_o groan_v and_o long_o to_o be_v freeman_n of_o this_o glorious_a city_n and_o though_o we_o can_v come_v to_o it_o as_o long_o as_o we_o live_v in_o this_o world_n yet_o why_o do_v we_o let_v we_o get_v into_o the_o suburb_n and_o dwell_v there_o the_o suburb_n of_o heaven_n be_v god_n true_a church_n on_o earth_n where_o his_o word_n be_v free_o know_v and_o preach_v and_o his_o holy_a sacrament_n administer_v and_o therein_o god_n true_o serve_v let_v we_o associate_v ourselves_o to_o this_o church_n and_o live_v according_a to_o the_o holy_a law_n thereof_o this_o be_v the_o suburb_n of_o heaven_n so_o shall_v we_o be_v ready_a to_o enter_v into_o the_o glorious_a city_n itself_o when_o the_o lord_n call_v us._n and_o as_o this_o be_v for_o ourselves_o so_o if_o lie_v be_v this_o that_o to_o suffer_v affliction_n for_o christ_n his_o sake_n be_v great_a honour_n and_o riches_n than_o the_o treasure_n of_o a_o kingdom_n and_o if_o moses_n his_o judgement_n instruction_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v we_o have_v for_o a_o long_a time_n through_o the_o great_a goodness_n of_o god_n enjoy_a peace_n and_o wealth_n with_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n but_o undoubted_o these_o day_n of_o peace_n will_v have_v a_o end_n they_o can_v last_v always_o god_n people_n must_v pass_v through_o the_o fiery_a furnace_n of_o affliction_n well_o when_o this_o be_v come_v upon_o we_o how_o shall_v we_o be_v able_a to_o bear_v it_o sure_o we_o must_v now_o learn_v to_o be_v of_o this_o opinion_n that_o moses_n be_v of_o we_o must_v judge_v it_o to_o be_v the_o great_a honour_n and_o riches_n that_o can_v be_v to_o suffer_v affliction_n for_o christ_n his_o sake_n and_o this_o will_v be_v the_o ground_n of_o all_o constancy_n courage_n and_o christian_a boldness_n in_o the_o day_n of_o trial_n for_o he_o that_o be_v of_o this_o mind_n will_v never_o fear_v affliction_n nor_o reproach_n for_o christ_n his_o sake_n nay_o he_o will_v be_v so_o far_o from_o fear_v it_o that_o he_o will_v rejoice_v and_o triumph_v therein_o further_o whereas_o it_o be_v say_v esteem_v the_o rebuke_n of_o christ_n here_o mark_v the_o rebuke_n of_o god_n church_n and_o people_n be_v call_v the_o rebuke_n of_o christ._n the_o people_n of_o god_n in_o egypt_n be_v lade_v with_o reproach_n and_o rebuke_n and_o behold_v christ_n account_v it_o his_o rebuke_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n so_o call_v it_o where_o learn_v this_o that_o christ_n esteem_v the_o reproach_n and_o affliction_n of_o his_o church_n as_o his_o own_o affliction_n when_o saul_n go_v to_o affliction_n and_o therefore_o he_o can_v no_o more_o forget_v or_o leave_v off_o to_o help_v they_o in_o distress_n than_o deny_v himself_o second_o here_o be_v a_o special_a comfort_n for_o god_n child_n that_o be_v in_o affliction_n their_o affliction_n be_v not_o their_o own_o alone_a but_o christ_n also_o he_o be_v their_o partner_n and_o fellow_n sufferer_n this_o may_v seem_v strange_a but_o it_o be_v most_o true_a christ_n put_v as_o it_o be_v his_o shoulder_n under_o our_o affliction_n and_o take_v they_o to_o himself_o as_o though_o they_o be_v his_o own_o than_o which_o what_o can_v be_v more_o comfortable_a for_o though_o thou_o thyself_o can_v bear_v it_o yet_o trust_v undoubted_o that_o christ_n who_o bear_v with_o thou_o will_v give_v thou_o strength_n to_o undergo_v in_o regard_n of_o his_o profession_n and_o religion_n for_o mock_v be_v persecution_n gal._n 4.29_o with_o gen._n 21.9_o and_o that_o reproach_n which_o be_v cast_v upon_o a_o christian_a be_v cast_v upon_o christ_n and_o christ_n take_v it_o as_o do_v unto_o himself_o the_o persecutor_n wound_v christ_n jesus_n through_o the_o side_n of_o a_o poor_a christian_a which_o be_v a_o fearful_a thing_n for_o in_o so_o do_v he_o set_v himself_o against_o the_o lord_n jesus_n he_o kick_v against_o the_o prick_v and_o if_o he_o so_o continue_v he_o must_v needs_o look_v for_o some_o fearful_a end_n judgement_n to_o think_v the_o reproach_n of_o christ_n great_a riches_n than_o the_o treasure_n of_o egypt_n namely_o because_o he_o have_v respect_n to_o the_o recompense_n of_o reward_n that_o be_v he_o often_o set_v his_o eye_n to_o behold_v and_o his_o heart_n to_o consider_v how_o god_n have_v make_v a_o promise_n of_o life_n everlasting_a after_o this_o life_n unto_o all_o those_o that_o obey_v he_o and_o trust_v in_o he_o in_o this_o life_n for_o the_o enjoy_n whereof_o he_o prefer_v that_o estate_n wherein_o he_o may_v live_v in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n though_o it_o be_v a_o state_n of_o reproach_n before_o all_o other_o whatsoever_o where_o we_o see_v what_o it_o be_v that_o will_v bring_v a_o man_n to_o esteem_v affliction_n with_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n better_a primitive_a church_n hebrew_n 10.37_o they_o suffer_v with_o joy_n the_o spoil_n of_o their_o good_n a_o very_a hard_a thing_n but_o yet_o most_o true_a for_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v render_v they_o know_v in_o themselves_o how_o that_o they_o have_v in_o heaven_n a_o better_a and_o more_o endure_a substance_n and_o our_o saviour_n christ_n endure_v the_o cross_n and_o despise_v the_o shame_n for_o the_o joy_n that_o be_v set_v before_o he_o hebrew_n 12.1_o that_o be_v in_o consideration_n of_o that_o joy_n in_o glory_n whereto_o he_o shall_v be_v advance_v himself_o and_o bring_v all_o his_o member_n this_o we_o must_v make_v use_n of_o for_o if_o we_o will_v live_v godly_a in_o christ_n jesus_n we_o must_v suffer_v affliction_n this_o flesh_n and_o blood_n will_v not_o yield_v unto_o and_o therefore_o to_o persuade_v we_o to_o suffer_v with_o joy_n we_o must_v with_o moses_n have_v respect_n to_o the_o recompense_n of_o reward_n we_o deserve_v it_o at_o god_n hand_n by_o the_o dignity_n of_o his_o work_n in_o suffering_n for_o sure_o no_o man_n can_v merit_v any_o thing_n at_o god_n hand_n the_o case_n be_v plain_a for_o christ_n as_o he_o be_v man_n consider_v his_o manhood_n apart_o from_o his_o godhead_n can_v not_o merit_v any_o thing_n at_o god_n hand_n for_o he_o that_o will_v merit_v of_o god_n by_o any_o work_n must_v do_v three_o thing_n 1._o he_o must_v do_v the_o work_n of_o himself_o and_o by_o himself_o for_o if_o he_o do_v it_o by_o another_o the_o other_o merit_v and_o must_v have_v the_o reward_n and_o praise_n of_o the_o work_n second_o he_o must_v do_v it_o of_o mere_a good_a will_n and_o not_o of_o duty_n for_o that_o which_o be_v of_o duty_n can_v merit_v because_o a_o man_n be_v bind_v to_o do_v it_o 3._o the_o work_n do_v to_o merit_n must_v be_v of_o that_o price_n and_o dignity_n that_o it_o may_v be_v proportionable_a to_o life_n everlasting_a which_o be_v the_o reward_n now_o though_o christ_n as_o he_o be_v man_n be_v above_o all_o man_n &_o all_o angel_n in_o grace_n and_o dignity_n yet_o consider_v his_o manhood_n apart_o from_o his_o godhead_n and_o he_o can_v not_o do_v a_o work_n with_o these_o three_o property_n for_o first_o the_o work_v do_v of_o the_o manhood_n be_v not_o do_v of_o itself_o but_o from_o that_o fullness_n of_o the_o spirit_n wherewith_o he_o be_v endue_v second_o christ_n as_o man_n be_v a_o creature_n and_o so_o consider_v his_o work_n be_v of_o duty_n to_o the_o creator_n and_o so_o can_v merit_v three_o christ_n work_n as_o man_n simple_o consider_v be_v finite_a and_o so_o can_v not_o merit_v infinite_a glory_n question_n how_o then_o do_v christ_n merit_v at_o god_n hand_n answer_n partly_o by_o mean_n of_o god_n promise_v make_v in_o the_o law_n which_o be_v this_o do_v this_o and_o thou_o shall_v live_v but_o proper_o and_o chief_o because_o he_o be_v not_o a_o mere_a man_n only_o but_o withal_o true_a and_o very_a whereas_o matthew_n say_v if_o you_o love_v they_o that_o love_v you_o what_o reward_n have_v you_o saint_n luke_n repeat_v the_o same_o thing_n say_v what_o thank_v have_v you_o or_o as_o the_o word_n signify_v what_o favour_n or_o free_a gift_n have_v you_o second_o there_o may_v be_v another_o cause_n render_v why_o life_n everlasting_a be_v call_v a_o reward_n to_o wit_n not_o in_o
