the_o seaventie_n disciple_n receive_v a_o power_n to_o teach_v the_o gospel_n luke_n 10._o but_o they_o have_v not_o the_o power_n to_o bind_v and_o loose_v which_o be_v give_v to_o the_o apostle_n and_o not_o to_o they_o second_o the_o apostle_n have_v the_o power_n of_o preach_v give_v to_o they_o long_o before_o this_o time_n as_o we_o may_v see_v matth._n 10._o three_o a_o man_n may_v be_v well_o teach_v and_o yet_o not_o loose_v from_o his_o sin_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a many_o be_v not_o bind_v in_o this_o manner_n that_o our_o saviour_n speak_v of_o who_o be_v not_o teach_v as_o all_o these_o who_o be_v without_o the_o church_n to_o who_o the_o power_n of_o the_o key_n extend_v not_o declaratiâ—â—_n there_o be_v other_o who_o think_v that_o to_o bind_v and_o loose_v here_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o declare_v that_o a_o man_n sin_n be_v bind_v or_o loose_v by_o god_n but_o first_o this_o agree_v not_o with_o the_o word_n of_o our_o saviour_n who_o say_v not_o who_o sin_n you_o declare_v to_o be_v bind_v shall_v be_v bind_v but_o whatsoever_o you_o bind_v shall_v be_v bind_v so_o john_n 20._o he_o say_v who_o sin_n you_o retain_v be_v retain_v and_o who_o sin_n you_o forgive_v they_o be_v forgive_v and_o in_o the_o 16_o of_o s._n matth_n he_o promise_v this_o power_n under_o the_o name_n of_o the_o key_n as_o we_o say_v now_o if_o a_o man_n have_v how_o can_v he_o have_v express_v it_o more_o full_o then_o in_o the_o term_n which_o he_o have_v use_v to_o the_o will_v i_o give_v the_o key_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n whatsoever_o you_o bind_v on_o earth_n it_o shall_v be_v bind_v in_o heaven_n etc._n etc._n who_o sin_n soever_o you_o retain_v they_o shall_v be_v retain_v etc._n etc._n three_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o saviour_n speech_n when_o he_o promise_v this_o power_n which_o be_v with_o a_o serious_a and_o vehement_a attestation_n very_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o and_o the_o ceremony_n use_v at_o the_o performance_n of_o it_o which_o be_v by_o breathe_v on_o they_o with_o these_o word_n receive_v the_o holy_a ghost_n these_o circumstance_n i_o say_v do_v show_v that_o our_o saviour_n intend_v to_o give_v and_o do_v actual_o give_v a_o great_a power_n then_o be_v that_o of_o declare_v a_o thing_n to_o be_v which_o already_o be_v beside_o the_o repentance_n of_o man_n be_v a_o thing_n which_o pastor_n can_v perfect_o know_v and_o therefore_o they_o can_v certain_o declare_v a_o man_n to_o be_v loose_v from_o sin_n for_o these_o and_o other_o reason_n i_o make_v no_o doubt_n that_o the_o power_n promise_v here_o by_o our_o saviour_n be_v not_o bare_o a_o declarative_a but_o also_o a_o effectual_a power_n which_o work_v some_o effect_n upon_o man_n so_o the_o holy_a father_n have_v understand_v this_o chrisost_n in_o his_o 3._o book_n of_o the_o priesthood_n say_v that_o christ_n have_v give_v to_o man_n that_o be_v upon_o earth_n a_o power_n to_o dispose_v of_o thing_n that_o be_v in_o heaven_n this_o power_n say_v he_o he_o have_v not_o give_v to_o the_o angel_n or_o archangel_n for_o to_o who_o of_o they_o have_v he_o say_v to_o the_o will_v i_o give_v the_o key_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n and_o whatsoever_o thou_o shall_v bind_v on_o earth_n etc._n etc._n earthly_a king_n say_v he_o have_v power_n to_o bind_v &_o loose_v also_o but_o their_o power_n extend_v to_o the_o body_n of_o man_n only_o whereas_o this_o power_n reach_v unto_o the_o soul_n and_o unto_o heaven_n that_o which_o the_o servant_n do_v here_o beneath_o the_o lord_n confirm_v above_o and_o the_o lord_n in_o a_o manner_n denize_v to_o follow_v the_o servant_n the_o bind_n on_o earth_n be_v prior_n at_o least_o in_o order_n of_o nature_n to_o the_o bind_n in_o heaven_n and_o the_o lose_n on_o earth_n be_v before_o the_o lose_n in_o heaven_n so_o write_v upon_o the_o 20_o of_o s._n john_n on_o these_o word_n who_o sin_n soever_o you_o retain_v they_o be_v retain_v he_o say_v that_o our_o saviour_n endue_v his_o apostle_n with_o such_o a_o power_n as_o a_o king_n give_v to_o governor_n under_o he_o when_o he_o give_v they_o power_n to_o cast_v into_o prison_n and_o to_o take_v out_o of_o it_o and_o write_v upon_o these_o word_n to_o thou_o will_v i_o give_v the_o key_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n matth._n 16._o he_o say_v that_o christ_n have_v give_v to_o a_o mortal_a man_n the_o power_n of_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v in_o heaven_n for_o this_o cause_n our_o saviour_n add_v here_o these_o word_n on_o earth_n whatsoever_o you_o bind_v on_o earth_n to_o what_o purpose_n be_v how_o their_o bind_a and_o lose_v be_v accompany_v with_o bind_v and_o lose_v in_o heaven_n the_o bond_n wherewith_o pastor_n by_o virtue_n of_o the_o key_n do_v bind_v sinner_n be_v direct_o and_o immediate_o a_o ecclesiastical_a bond_n exercise_v about_o sinew_n as_o it_o as_o a_o offence_n of_o the_o church_n church_n so_o their_o lose_n be_v direct_o and_o immediate_o a_o untie_n and_o lose_v of_o that_o ecclesiastical_a bond_n wherewith_o they_o have_v bind_v a_o sinner_n whence_o of_o necessity_n their_o bind_n most_o go_v before_o their_o lose_n in_o this_o kind_n they_o can_v lord_n be_v say_v david_n as_o if_o he_o will_v say_v if_o you_o taste_v you_o will_v know_v the_o sweetness_n of_o his_o goodness_n mercy_n liberality_n and_o power_n so_o we_o may_v say_v of_o every_o divine_a mystery_n taste_v and_o see_v how_o sweet_a it_o be_v and_o of_o every_o virtue_n taste_v &_o see_v how_o sweet_a be_v obedience_n patience_n humility_n chastiry_n charity_n etc._n sorrow_n if_o it_o may_v have_v stand_v with_o their_o well-being_n he_o will_v have_v be_v glad_a that_o thy_o have_v not_o be_v sorrowful_a at_o all_o yet_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n he_o declare_v sorrow_n of_o which_o nature_n that_o be_v which_o his_o epistle_n wrought_v in_o the_o corinthian_n first_o the_o very_a name_n he_o give_v it_o contain_v a_o argument_n of_o commendation_n for_o the_o sorrow_n which_o he_o speak_v of_o be_v a_o godly_a sorrow_n or_o a_o sorrow_n according_a to_o god._n 2._o he_o commend_v it_o from_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o it_o be_v such_o a_o sorrow_n as_o work_v repentance_n even_o a_o repentance_n that_o be_v never_o to_o be_v repent_v of_o because_o it_o be_v unto_o salvation_n 3._o he_o commend_v it_o by_o oppose_v the_o contrary_a sorrow_n nam_o the_o sorrow_n of_o this_o world_n which_o work_v death_n that_o we_o may_v proceed_v the_o more_o clear_o we_o shall_v begin_v at_o this_o last_o point_n the_o sorrow_n of_o this_o world_n world_n say_v he_o work_v death_n he_o oppose_v as_o you_o see_v two_o kind_n of_o sorrow_n the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o the_o sorrow_n which_o be_v according_a to_o god_n and_o the_o sorrow_n of_o this_o world_n the_o sorrow_n of_o the_o good_a corinthian_n have_v this_o good_a in_o it_o that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o sorrow_n of_o this_o world_n which_o be_v no_o matter_n of_o joy_n for_o it_o work_v death_n all_o sorrow_n presuppose_v love_n for_o no_o man_n sorrow_v but_o for_o the_o loss_n or_o want_n of_o that_o which_o he_o love_v therefore_o where_o this_o worldly_a sorrow_n be_v there_o be_v also_o a_o love_n of_o this_o world_n such_o be_v the_o sorrow_n that_o man_n have_v for_o the_o loss_n of_o worldly_a thing_n wealth_n honour_n delight_n or_o friend_n if_o their_o heart_n and_o love_n be_v set_v upon_o these_o thing_n they_o foolish_o and_o without_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n rejoice_v in_o they_o when_o they_o have_v they_o and_o be_v drink_v with_o that_o transitory_a happiness_n they_o seek_v for_o no_o more_o on_o the_o contraâ—y_n when_o they_o loss_n or_o want_v they_o their_o heart_n be_v cast_v down_o and_o they_o be_v press_v down_o with_o sorrow_n inordinate_o such_o a_o sorrow_n the_o apostle_n recommend_v not_o nay_o he_o dehort_v from_o it_o for_o it_o work_v death_n this_o sorrow_n can_v do_v no_o good_a when_o a_o man_n have_v lose_v his_o riches_n if_o he_o sorrow_n for_o that_o this_o sorrow_n will_v not_o restore_v his_o wealth_n to_o he_o again_o if_o a_o man_n have_v lose_v his_o honour_n the_o sorrow_n which_o he_o have_v for_o that_o will_v not_o recover_v it_o again_o if_o he_o have_v lose_v his_o friend_n or_o child_n shall_v he_o mourn_v never_o so_o much_o for_o they_o his_o sorrow_n will_v not_o bring_v they_o to_o life_n again_o so_o this_o sorrow_n can_v do_v no_o good_a yea_o on_o the_o contrary_a it_o do_v great_a harm_n it_o work_v death_n it_o make_v the_o way_n to_o bodily_a death_n especial_o when_o it_o be_v inordinate_a the_o heaviness_n of_o the_o spirit_n dry_v up_o the_o bone_n say_v solomon_n proverb_n 17._o 22._o sorrow_n have_v kill_v many_o and_o there_o be_v no_o profit_n in_o it_o say_v the_o wiseman_n ecclestast_n chap._n 30._o 23._o and_o which_o be_v worst_a of_o all_o this_o sorrow_n lead_v to_o eternal_a death_n for_o god_n be_v offend_v with_o it_o it_o stir_v up_o a_o man_n to_o do_v many_o thing_n whereat_o god_n be_v offend_v and_o make_v a_o man_n guilty_a of_o eternal_a death_n so_o this_o sorrow_n be_v no_o matter_n of_o joy_n but_o the_o sorrow_n that_o be_v in_o the_o corinthian_n and_o which_o ought_v to_o be_v in_o we_o all_o be_v of_o another_o kind_n it_o be_v a_o godly_a sorrow_n or_o a_o sorrow_n according_a to_o god_n for_o better_a understanding_n of_o this_o god._n consider_v first_o that_o this_o sorrow_n which_o be_v according_a to_o god_n be_v such_o a_o sorrow_n as_o a_o man_n
