a very grievous murrain 4 And the LORD shall sever between the cattel of Israel and the cattel of Egypt and there shall nothing die of all that is the childrens of Israel 5 And the LORD appointed a set time saying To morrow the LORD shall do this thing in the land 6 And the LORD did that thing on the morrow and all the cattel of Egypt died but of the cattel of the children of Israel died not one 7 And Pharaoh sent and behold there was not one of the cattel of the Israelites dead And the heart of Pharaoh was hardned and he did not let the people go 8 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses and unto Aaron Take to you handfuls of ashes of the furnace and let Moses sprinkle it towards the heaven in the sight of Pharaoh 9 And it shall become small dust in all the land of Egypt and shall he a boyl breaking forth with blains upon man and upon beast throughout all the land of Egypt 10 And they took ashes of the furnace and stood before Pharaoh and Moses sprinkled it up toward heaven and it became a boyl breaking forth with blains upon man and upon beast 11 And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boyl for the boyl was upon the magicians and upon all the Egyptians 12 And the LORD hardned the heart of Pharaoh and he hearkned not unto them * Chap. 4.21 as the LORD had spoken unto Moses 13 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Rise up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh and lay unto him Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews Let my people go that they may serve me 14 For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart and upon thy servants and upon thy people that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth 15 For now I will stretch out my hand that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence and thou shalt be cut off from the earth 16 And in very deed for * Rom. 9. â—7 this cause have I †Heb. made thee stand raised thee up for to shew in thee my power and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth 17 As yet exalted thou thyself against my people that thou wilt not let them go 18 Behold to morrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail such as hath not been in Egypt since the foundation thereof even until now 19 Send therefore now and gather thy cattel and all that thou hast in the field for upon every man and beast which shall be found in the field and shall not be brought home the hail shall come down upon them and they shall die 20 He that feared the word of the LORD amongst the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattel flee into the houses 21 And he that †Heb. set not his â—eart unto regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattel in the field 22 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch forth thine hand toward heaven that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt upon man and upon beast upon every herb of the field throughout the land of Egypt 23 And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven and the LORD sent thunder and hail and the fire ran along upon the ground and the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt 24 So there was hail and fire mingled with the hail very grievous such as there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation 25 And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field both man and beast and the hail smote every herb of the field and brake every tree of the field 26 Onely in the land of Goshen where the children of Israel were was there no hail 27 ¶ And Pharaoh sent and called for Moses and Aaron and said unto them I have sinned this time the LORD is righteous and I and my people are wicked 28 Intreat the LORD for it is enough that there be no more †Heb. voices of God mighty thundrings and hail and I will let you go and ye shall stay no longer 29 And Moses said unto him Assoon as I am gone out of the city I will spread abroad my hands unto the LORD and the thunder shall cease neither shall there be any more hail that thou mayest know how that the * Psal 24.1 earth is the LORDS 30 But as for thee and thy servants I know that ye will not yet fear the LORD God 31 And the flax and the barley was smitten for the barley was in the ear and the â—â—ax was bolled 32 But the wheat and the rie were not smitten for they were †Heb. bidden or dark not grown up 33 And Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh and spread abroad his hands unto the LORD and the thunders and hail ceased and the rain was not poured upon the earth 34 And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders were ceased he sinned yet more and hardned his heart he and his servants 35 And the heart of Pharaoh was hardned neither would he let the children of Israel go as the LORD had spoken †Heb. by the hand of Moses by Moses CHAP. CXVIII 1 An exhortation to praise God for his mercy 5 The psalmist by his experience sheweth how good it is to trust in God 19Vnder the type of the psalmist the coming of Christ in his kingdom is expressed O * 1 Chr. 16.8 Ps 106.1 107.1 136.1 Give thanks unto the LORD for he is good because his mercy endureth for ever 2 Let Israel now say that his mercy endureth for ever 3 Let the house of Aaron now say that his mercy endureth for ever 4 Let them now that fear the LORD say that his mercy endureth for ever 5 I called upon the LORD †Heb. out of distress in distress the LORD answered me and set me in a large place 6 * Ps 56.4 11. XC 1 Moses setting forth Gods providence 3 complains of humane fragility 7 divine chastisements 10 and brevity of life 12 He prayeth for the knowledge and sensible experience of Gods good providence ¶ ‖ Or a prayer being a psalm of Moses A Prayer of Moses the man of God LOrd thou hast been our dwelling-place †Heb. in generation and generation in all generations 2 Before the mountains were brought forth or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world even from everlasting to everlasting thou art God 3 Thou turnest man to destruction and sayest Return ye children of men 4 * 2 Pet. 3.8 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday ‖ Or when he hath passed them when it is past and as a watch in the night 5 Thou carriest them away as with a floud they are as a sleep in the morning they are like grass which ‖ Or is changed groweth up 6 In the morning it flourisheth and groweth up in the evening it is cut down and withereth 7 For we are consumed by thine anger and by thy wrath are we troubled 8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee our secret sins in the light of thy countenance 9 For all our days are †Heb. turned away passed away in thy wrath we spend our years ‖ Or as a meditation as a tale that is told 10 †Heb. as for the days of our years in them are seventy years The days of our years are threescore years and ten and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years yet is their strength labour and sorrow for it is soon cut off and we flie away 11 Who knoweth the power of thine anger even according to thy fear so is thy wrath 12 So teach us to number our days that we may †Heb. cause to come apply our hearts unto wisdom 13 Return O LORD how long and let it repent thee concerning thy servants 14 O satisfie us early with thy mercy that we may rejoyce and be glad all our days 15 Make us glad according to the days wherein thou hast afflicted us and the years wherein we have seen evil 16 Let thy work appear unto thy servants and thy glory unto their children 17 And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us and establish thou the work of our hands upon us yea the work of our hands establish thou it PSAL. Salem priest of the most high God who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him 2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all first being by interpretation king of righteousness and after that also king of Salem which is king of peace 3 Without father without mother †Gr. without pedegree without descent having neither beginning of days nor end of life but made like unto the Son of God abideth a priest continually 4 Now consider how great this man was unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils 5 And verily * Num. 18.21 they that are of the sons of Levi who receive the office of the priesthood have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law that is of their brethren though they come out of the loyns of Abraham 6 But he whose ‖ Or pedegree descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham and blessed him that had the promises 7 And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better 8 And here men that die receive tithes but there he receiveth them of whom it is witnessed that he liveth 9 And as I may so say Levi also who receiveth tithes payed tithes in Abraham 10 For he was yet in the loyns of his father when Melchisedec met him 11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood for under it the people received the law what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec and not be called after the order of Aaron 12 For the priesthood being changed there is made of necessity a change also of the law 13 For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe of which no man gave attendance at the altar 14 For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood 15 And it is yet far more evident for that alter the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest 16 Who is made not after the law of a carnal commandment but after the power of an endless life 17 For he testifieth * Psal 110.4 Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec 18 For there is verily a disanulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof 19 For the law made nothing perfect ‖ Or but is was the bringing in but the bringing in of a better hope did by the which we draw nigh unto God 20 And in as much as not without an oath he was made priest 21 For those priests were made ‖ Or without swearing of an oath without an oath but this with an oath by him that said unto him * Psal 110.4 The Lord sware and will not repent Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec 22 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament 23 And they truly were many priests because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death 24 But this man because he continueth ever hath an ‖ Or which pasfeth not from one to another unchangeable priesthood 25 Wherefore he is able also to save them ‖ Or evermore to the uttermost the come unto God by him seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them 26 For such an high priest became us who is holy harmless undefiled separate from sinners and made higher then the heavens 27 Who needeth not daily as * Levit. 9.7 16.6 those high priests to offer up sacrifice first for his own sins and then for the peoples for this he did once when he offered up himself 28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity but the word of the oath which was since the law maketh the Son who is †Gr. perfected consecrated for evermore CHAP. VIII 1 By the eternal priesthood of Christ the Levitical priesthood of Aaron is abolished 7 and the temporal covenant with the fathers by the eternal covenant of the gospel NOw of the things which we have spoken this is the sum We have such an high Priest who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens 2 A minister ‖ Or of â—oly things of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord pitched and not man 3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer 4 For if he were on earth he should not be a priest seeing that ‖ Or they are priests there are priests that offer gifts according to the law 5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle * Exod. 25. â—0 Acts 7.44 For see saith he that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount 6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministery by how much also he is the Mediatour of a better ‖ Or testament covenant which was established upon better promises 7 For if that first covenant had been faultless then should no place have been sought for the second 8 For finding fault with them he saith * Jer. 31.31 32 33 34. Behold the days come saith the Lord when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah 9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt because they continued nor in my covenant and I regarded them not saith the Lord. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days saith the Lord I will †Gr. give put my laws into their minde and write them ‖ Or upon in their hearts and I will be to them a God and they shall be to me a people 11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour and every man his brother saying Know the Lord for all shall know me from the least to the greatest 12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more 13 In that he saith A new covenant he hath made the first old Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away CHAP. IX 1 The dâ—scription of the rites and bloudy sacrifices of the law 11 far inferiour to the dignity perfection of the bloud and sacrifice of Christ THen verily the first covenant had also ‖ Or ceâ—â—mâ—nits ordinances of divine service and a worldly sanctuary 2 For there was a tabernable made * â—xod 40. the first wherein was the candlestick and the table and the shew-bread which is called ‖ Or holy the sanctuary 3 And after the second vail the
roareth and when he had cried seven thunders uttered their voices 4 And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices I was about to write and I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered and write them not 5 And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth * Dan. 12.7 lifted up his hand to heaven 6 And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever who created heaven and the things that therein are and the earth and the things that therein are and the sea and the things which are therein that there should be time no longer 7 But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel when he shall begin to sound the mystery of God should be finished as he hath declared to his servants the prophets 8 And the voice which I heard from heaven spake unto me again and said Go and take the little book which is open in the hand of the angel which standeth upon the sea and upon the earth 9 And I went unto the angel and said unto him Give me the little book And he said unto me * Ezek. 2.8 and 3.3 Take it and eat it up and it shall make thy belly bitter but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey 10 And I took the little book out of the angels hand and ate it up and it was in my mouth sweet as honey and assâ—on as I had eaten it my belly was bitter 11 And he said unto me Thou must prophesie again before many peoples and nations and tongues and kings CHAP. XI 3 The two witnesses prophesie 6 They have power to shut heaven that it ram not 7 The beast shall fight against them and kill them 8 They lie unburied 11 and after three days and an half rise again 14 The second wo is past 15 The seventh trumpet soundeth ANd there was given me a reed like unto a rod and the angel stood saying Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and them that worship therein 2 But the court which is without the temple †Gr. cast out leave out and measure it not for it is given unto the Gentiles and the holy city shall they tread under foot fourty and two moneths 3 And ‖ Or I will give unto my two witnesses that they may prophesie I will give power unto my two witnesses and they shall prophesie a thousand two hundred and threescore days clothed in sackcloth 4 These are the * Zech. 4.3.11.14 two olive trees and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth 5 And if any man will hurt them fire proceedeth out of their mouth and devoureth their enemies and if any man will hurt them he must in this manner be killed 6 These have power to shut heaven that it rain not in the days of their prophesie and have power over waters to turn them to bloud and to smite the earth with all plagues as often as they will 7 And when they shall have finished their testimony the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them and shall overcome them and kill them 8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt where also our Lord was crucified 9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an hall and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves 10 And they that dwell upon the earn shall rejoyce over them and make merry and shall send gifts one to another because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth 11 And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entred into them and they stood upon their feet and great fear fell upon them which saw them 12 And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them Come up hither And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud and their enemies beheld them 13 And the same hour was there a great earthquake and the tenth part of the city fell and in the earthquake ware slain †Gr. names of men of men seven thousand and the remnant were affrighted and gave glory to the God of heaven 14 The second wo is past and behold the third wo cometh quickly 15 And the seventh angel sounded and there were great voices in heaven saying The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ and he shall reign for ever and ever 16 And the four and twenty elders which sat before God on their seats fell upon their faces and worshipped God 17 Saying We give thee thanks O Lord God Almighty which art and wast and art to come because thou hast taken to thee thy great power and hast reigned 18 And the nations were angry and thy wrath is come and the time of the dead that they should be judged and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets and to the saints and them that fear thy name small and great and shouldest destroy them which ‖ Or corrupt destroy the earth 19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament and there were lightnings and voices and thundrings and an earthquake and great hail CHAP. XII 1 A woman clothed with the sun travaileth 4 The great red dragon standeth before her ready to devour her childe 6 when she was delivered she fleeth into the wilderness 7 Michael and his angels fight with the dragon and prevail 13 The dragon being cast down into the earth persecuteth the woman ANd there appeared a great ‖ Or signe wonder in heaven a woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet and upon her head a crown of twelve stars 2 And she being with childe cried travailing in birth and pained to be delivered 3 And there appeared another ‖ Or signe wonder in heaven and behold a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns and seven crowns upon his heads 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven and did cast them to the earth and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered for to devour her childe assoon as it was born 5 And she brought forth a man-childe who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron and her childe was caught up unto God and to his throne 6 And the woman fled into the wilderness where she hath a place prepared of God that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days 7 And there was war in heaven Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and the dragon fought and his angels 8 And prevailed not neither was there place found any more in heaven 9 And the great dragon was cast out that
hour so great riches is come to nought And every ship-master and all the company in ships and sailors and as many as trade by sea stood afar off 18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning saying What city is like unto this great city 19 And they cast duâ—t on their heads and cried weeping and wailing saying Alas alas that great city wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness for in one hour is she made desolate 20 Rejoyce over her thou heaven and ye holy apostles and prophets for God hath avenged you on her 21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great milstone and cast it into the sea saying Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down and shall be found no more at all 22 And the voice of harpers and musicians and of pipers and trumpeters shall be heard no more at all in thee and no craftsman of whatsoever craft he be shall be sound any more in thee and the sound of a milstone shall be heard no more at all in thee 23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee for thy merchants were the great men of the earth for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived 24 And in her was found the bloud of prophets and of saints and of all that were slain upon the earth CHAP. XIX 1 God is praised in heaven for judging the great whore and avenging the bloud of his saints 7 The marriage of the Lamb. 10 The angel will not be worshipped 17 The fowls called to the great slaughter ANd after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven saying Alleluia Salvation and glory and honour and power unto the Lord our God 2 For true and righteous are his judgements for he hath judged the great whore which did corrupt the earth with her sâ—rnication and hath avenged the bloud of his servants at her hand 3 And again they said Alleluia And her smoke rose up for ever and ever 4 And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne saying Amen Alleluia 5 And a voice came out of the throne saying Praise our God all ye his servants and ye that fear him both small and great 6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude and as the voice of many waters and as the voice of mighty thundrings saying Alleluia for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth 7 Let us be glad and rejoyce and give honour to him for the marriage of the Lamb is come and his wife hath made her self ready 8 And to her was granted that she should be arayed in fine linen clean and white for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints 9 And he saith unto me Write * Mat. 22.2 Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage-supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me These are the true sayings of God 10 And I fell at his feet to worship him and he said unto me * Chap. 22 9. See thou do it not I am thy fellow-servant and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus worship God for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophesie 11 And I saw heaven opened and behold a white horse and he that sat upon him was called faithful and true and in righteousness he doth judge and make war 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire and on his head were many crowns and he had a name written that no man knew but he himself 13 * Isa 63.2 And he was clothed with a vesture dipt in bloud and his name is called The Word of God 14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses clothed in fine linen white and clean 15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword that with it he should smite the nations and he shall rule them with a rod of iron and he treadeth the wine-press of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God 16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written * Chap. 17.14 KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS 17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun and he cried with a loud voice saying to all the fowls that flie in the midst of heaven Come and gather your selves together unto the supper of the great God 18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of captains and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of them that sit on them and the flesh of all men both free and bond both small and great 19 And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse and against his army 20 And the beast was taken and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast and them that worshipped his image These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone 21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse which sword proceeded out of his mouth and all the fowls were filled with their flesh CHAP. XX. 2 Satan bound for a thousand years 5 The first resurrection 6 they blessed that have part therein 7 Satan let loose again 8 God and Magog 10 The devil cast into the lake of fire and brimstone 12 The last and general resurrection ANd I saw an angel come down from heaven having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand 2 And he laid hold on the dragon that old serpent which is the devil and Satan and bound him a thousand years 3 And cast him into the bottomless pit and shut him up and set a seal upon him that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years should be fulfilled and after that he must be loosed a little season 4 And I saw thrones and they sat upon them and judgement was given unto them and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus and for the word of God and which had not worshipped the beast neither his image neither had received his mark upon their forcheads or in their hands and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished This is the first resurrection 6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection on such the second death hath no power but they shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with him a thousand years 7 And when the thousand years are expired Satan shall be loosed out of his prison 8
