your_o nature_n and_o what_o need_n therefore_o it_o have_v to_o be_v search_v into_o and_o fan_v by_o repentance_n be_v well_o assure_v thou_o man_n whatsoever_o thou_o be_v there_o be_v so_o much_o chaff_n in_o thou_o that_o if_o thou_o search_v not_o and_o fan_v it_o not_o out_o thou_o will_v prove_v nothing_o but_o chaff_n at_o the_o last_o day_n and_o so_o be_v blow_v away_o with_o the_o that_o those_o minister_n never_o have_v their_o lip_n touch_v with_o a_o coal_n from_o god_n altar_n that_o be_v their_o soul_n with_o a_o coal_n from_o god_n altar_n that_o be_v their_o sin_n conscience_n never_o touch_v nor_o their_o soul_n season_v with_o the_o sanctify_a grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n which_o sit_v still_o and_o see_v great_a and_o grievous_a stain_n in_o a_o church_n and_o corruption_n in_o a_o state_n and_o can_v be_v content_a never_o to_o reprove_v they_o as_o though_o minister_n be_v persuader_n only_o and_o not_o reprover_n but_o when_o this_o come_v to_o be_v weigh_v in_o the_o balance_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n it_o will_v be_v find_v that_o not_o the_o please_a tongue_n but_o the_o fiery_a tongue_n be_v the_o principal_a grace_n of_o a_o good_a minister_n but_o to_o go_v further_o whence_o come_v this_o coal_n heaven_n take_a from_o the_o altar_n this_o coal_n of_o fire_n be_v take_v by_o the_o angel_n from_o the_o altar_n of_o god_n where_o be_v a_o fire_n which_o never_o go_v out_o and_o this_o fire_n be_v that_o that_o come_v from_o heaven_n send_v down_o by_o god_n at_o the_o dedication_n of_o the_o temple_n by_o solomon_n and_o so_o fiery_a and_o his_o speech_n never_o so_o powerful_a as_o therefore_o minister_n must_v abhor_v the_o flatter_a and_o please_a tongue_n and_o must_v have_v a_o fiery_a tongue_n so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n this_o fire_n must_v be_v from_o god_n altar_n that_o be_v the_o fire_n of_o their_o zeal_n must_v be_v kindle_v by_o god_n spirit_n and_o not_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o discord_n and_o dissension_n ambitious_a humour_n turbulent_a &_o proud_a humour_n new_a opinion_n private_a quarrel_n all_o these_o nor_o none_o of_o these_o be_v for_o the_o pulpit_n these_o may_v make_v a_o man_n fiery_a tongue_v but_o this_o fire_n be_v never_o take_v from_o god_n altar_n as_o the_o prophet_n be_v this_o fiery_a tongue_n never_o come_v from_o heaven_n as_o the_o apostle_n do_v it_o follow_v and_o touch_v my_o lip_n this_o five_o and_o last_o circumstance_n be_v the_o application_n of_o the_o remedy_n the_o coal_n which_o be_v the_o medicine_n be_v apply_v by_o pollute_v this_o angel_n in_o word_n defy_v satan_n and_o not_o name_v he_o without_o defiance_n and_o spit_v at_o he_o and_o yet_o alas_o he_o be_v in_o their_o heart_n they_o spit_v he_o out_o of_o their_o mouth_n but_o he_o be_v low_a they_o shall_v also_o spit_v he_o out_o of_o their_o heart_n and_o that_o be_v true_a defiance_n indeed_o for_o alas_o he_o lodge_v in_o thy_o heart_n and_o there_o he_o make_v his_o be_v the_o penitent_a humble_v and_o believe_v heart_n which_o must_v then_o abide_v it_o out_o and_o endure_v the_o fan_n of_o temptation_n and_o persecution_n and_o to_o conclude_v let_v not_o the_o devil_n deceive_v thou_o in_o make_v thou_o imagine_v or_o hope_v to_o please_v god_n and_o yet_o to_o let_v thy_o corruption_n lie_v unseen_a and_o thy_o sin_n unsearched_a out_o lest_o thereby_o any_o other_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o thy_o heart_n until_o the_o chaff_n of_o vanity_n be_v first_o blow_v away_o that_o so_o the_o holy_a grace_n of_o god_n may_v be_v lay_v up_o in_o the_o garner_n of_o thy_o soul_n and_o therefore_o questionless_a to_o speak_v one_o word_n to_o touch_v our_o common_a professor_n in_o the_o very_a sore_n of_o their_o soul_n all_o knowledge_n that_o be_v store_v up_o in_o these_o impure_a and_o unsearched_a heart_n be_v even_o as_o wheat_n lay_v up_o in_o the_o chaff_n which_o be_v a_o thousand_o to_o one_o sure_a to_o be_v eat_v up_o by_o the_o chaff_n so_o that_o when_o the_o winnow_a time_n of_o trial_n and_o persecution_n come_v i_o fear_v that_o such_o man_n will_v for_o all_o their_o knowledge_n shrink_v aside_o and_o betray_v the_o truth_n there_o knowledge_n then_o prove_v no_o better_a than_o chaff_n because_o it_o be_v lay_v up_o in_o a_o unholy_a heart_n if_o therefore_o thou_o will_v stand_v and_o endure_v when_o popery_n or_o persecution_n or_o temptation_n come_v if_o thou_o will_v abide_v the_o fury_n of_o the_o fan_n of_o temptation_n now_o then_o exercise_v thy_o heart_n with_o the_o fan_n of_o god_n law_n search_v and_o ransack_v it_o purge_v out_o the_o chaff_n of_o corruption_n and_o store_n up_o knowledge_n in_o a_o holy_a heart_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n and_o that_o will_v abide_v the_o violence_n of_o all_o temptation_n yea_o when_o god_n suffer_v the_o devil_n to_o do_v with_o we_o as_o he_o do_v with_o peter_n to_o winnow_v we_o like_o wheat_n to_o sift_v and_o try_v we_o as_o he_o do_v job_n with_o the_o furious_a wind_n of_o all_o his_o malice_n this_o knowledge_n will_v prove_v wheat_n that_o will_v abide_v the_o wind_n and_o gold_n that_o will_v abide_v the_o fire_n thus_o glorious_a will_v it_o be_v in_o the_o end_n if_o we_o follow_v this_o holy_a prophet_n council_n and_o search_v our_o heart_n and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o first_o point_n namely_o the_o duty_n of_o search_v here_o command_v in_o which_o we_o have_v stay_v the_o long_a because_o it_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n and_o this_o be_v well_o lay_v the_o whole_a building_n will_v go_v up_o the_o fast_a now_o we_o come_v to_o the_o second_o general_a point_n here_o lay_v down_o that_o be_v who_o must_v we_o search_v the_o prophet_n answer_v yourselves_o not_o other_o man_n but_o yourselves_o this_o search_n so_o urge_v and_o enforce_v by_o the_o prophet_n must_v not_o be_v of_o other_o man_n heart_n and_o life_n but_o of_o our_o own_o our_o own_o be_v our_o charge_n and_o not_o other_o man_n and_o therein_o be_v the_o say_n true_a which_o else_o be_v most_o false_a every_o man_n for_o himself_o for_o as_o every_o soul_n must_v be_v save_v by_o itself_o so_o must_v it_o believe_v repent_v and_o search_v itself_o the_o duty_n therefore_o here_o command_v be_v for_o every_o man_n that_o will_v have_v his_o soul_n to_o be_v save_v to_o search_v it_o other_o man_n life_n but_o discern_v not_o beam_n in_o their_o own_o whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o they_o stumble_v and_o fall_v foul_o for_o the_o eye_n of_o most_o man_n be_v set_v upon_o other_o &_o not_o upon_o themselves_o and_o thereupon_o it_o be_v that_o a_o evil_a man_n see_v other_o man_n &_o not_o himself_o think_v best_o of_o himself_o &_o worst_a of_o other_o man_n but_o contrariwise_o a_o good_a man_n see_v himself_o &_o not_o other_o man_n think_v worst_a of_o himself_o and_o better_a of_o other_o man_n a_o evil_a man_n look_v outward_a and_o judge_v other_o man_n but_o a_o good_a man_n look_v homeward_o &_o judge_v himself_o and_o in_o judge_v condemn_v himself_o far_o above_o other_o man_n and_o that_o because_o by_o search_v into_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o way_n he_o know_v that_o by_o himself_o which_o he_o know_v not_o by_o any_o man_n in_o the_o world_n beside_o so_o then_o we_o must_v search_v not_o other_o man_n but_o ourselves_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o our_o own_o life_n be_v our_o charge_n and_o burden_n the_o life_n of_o other_o man_n concern_v we_o not_o be_v private_a man_n further_o they_o either_o to_o follow_v they_o be_v good_a or_o take_v heed_n of_o they_o be_v evil_a but_o to_o search_v or_o to_o be_v inquisitive_a into_o they_o be_v no_o duty_n command_v we_o but_o rather_o a_o foul_a &_o a_o base_a vice_n forbid_v of_o god_n indeed_o magistrate_n in_o their_o people_n pastor_n in_o their_o congregation_n and_o householders_n in_o their_o family_n be_v to_o search_v but_o they_o can_v search_v only_o for_o criminal_a cause_n or_o open_a actual_a sin_n but_o this_o search_n must_v be_v of_o our_o heart_n which_o no_o man_n can_v search_v but_o ourselves_o only_o few_o man_n have_v a_o calling_n to_o inquire_v into_o other_o man_n life_n but_o every_o man_n have_v a_o calling_n to_o search_v into_o himself_o but_o alas_o man_n do_v far_o otherwise_o they_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o rot_v in_o their_o own_o sin_n and_o erect_v a_o inquisition_n over_o other_o man_n life_n &_o it_o be_v to_o be_v see_v in_o daily_a experience_n that_o those_o man_n who_o be_v the_o great_a searcher_n and_o pryer_n into_o other_o man_n be_v the_o neglecter_n and_o forgetter_n of_o themselves_o and_o contrariwise_o they_o who_o do_v narrow_o search_v themselves_o and_o their_o own_o way_n and_o look_v into_o the_o corner_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n do_v find_v so_o much_o work_v to_o do_v with_o themselves_o that_o they_o little_o busy_v themselves_o with_o other_o man_n and_o thus_o much_o may_v suffice_v for_o that_o point_n it_o follow_v o_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v the_o three_o point_n who_o must_v search_v the_o jew_n who_o be_v here_o term_v a_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v make_v pure_a corn_n fit_a to_o replenish_v the_o garner_n of_o heaven_n &_o how_o to_o continue_v god_n favour_n and_o the_o gospel_n to_o this_o nation_n if_o thou_o go_v away_o with_o this_o lesson_n thou_o have_v a_o jewel_n more_o worth_a then_o if_o thou_o shall_v go_v home_o possess_v or_o all_o the_o huge_a riches_n of_o this_o fair_a you_o call_v this_o and_o such_o like_a time_n fair_a time_n but_o if_o thou_o learn_v this_o lesson_n right_a than_o thou_o may_v say_v that_o this_o be_v the_o fair_a day_n in_o deed_n that_o ever_o shine_v upon_o thou_o since_o thou_o be_v bear_v this_o precious_a jewel_n which_o i_o have_v speak_v of_o all_o this_o while_n i_o hear_v offer_n unto_o thou_o every_o one_o bring_v hither_o something_o to_o be_v sell_v this_o be_v the_o gospel_n nor_o this_o peace_n will_v reach_v to_o our_o posterity_n therefore_o now_o to_o make_v a_o end_n i_o once_o again_o &_o last_o commend_v this_o doctrine_n to_o you_o all_o &_o every_o one_o ourselves_o in_o the_o breach_n and_o pray_v for_o the_o ignorances_n of_o the_o multitude_n and_o bewail_v their_o sin_n who_o bewail_v not_o their_o own_o so_o do_v 14._o noah_n daniel_n and_o job_n in_o their_o age_n and_o pray_v for_o the_o people_n in_o general_a calamity_n let_v we_o all_o be_v noah_n daniel_n and_o job_n in_o our_o generation_n if_o we_o do_v thus_o then_o when_o judgement_n come_v we_o shall_v either_o turn_v they_o away_o from_o our_o nation_n or_o at_o the_o least_o we_o shall_v deliver_v our_o own_o soul_n let_v we_o now_o turn_v to_o the_o lord_n in_o prayer_n and_o because_o it_o can_v be_v hope_v but_o that_o this_o our_o general_a sinfulness_n must_v needs_o end_v with_o some_o heavy_a judgement_n let_v we_o desire_v the_o lord_n still_o to_o defer_v our_o deserve_a punishment_n and_o still_o to_o spare_v we_o and_o to_o give_v we_o time_n and_o leisure_n to_o repent_v that_o so_o we_o enter_v into_o ourselves_o
minister_n let_v this_o suffice_v they_o they_o be_v the_o man_n that_o must_v declare_v unto_o man_n his_o righteousness_n even_o he_o that_o scorn_v and_o contemn_v the_o ministry_n he_o have_v no_o righteousness_n in_o he_o unless_o it_o be_v by_o the_o mean_n of_o a_o poor_a minister_n then_o do_v thou_o thy_o duty_n and_o be_v that_o mock_n thou_o have_v cause_n to_o honour_v thou_o and_o let_v this_o encourage_v student_n to_o consecrate_v themselves_o student_n to_o the_o ministry_n for_o what_o calling_n have_v so_o high_a a_o office_n as_o this_o to_o declare_v unto_o man_n his_o righteousness_n and_o assure_o how_o ever_o call_n in_o this_o wicked_a world_n thou_o be_v little_o account_v of_o for_o if_o it_o do_v not_o so_o it_o be_v not_o wicked_a yet_o thou_o be_v honour_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o all_o god_n child_n and_o even_o in_o the_o conscience_n of_o some_o who_o tongue_n do_v smite_v thou_o and_o the_o soul_n of_o thousand_o when_o they_o die_v shall_v bless_v thou_o who_o in_o their_o life_n care_v not_o for_o thou_o and_o the_o devil_n himself_o do_v envy_v &_o the_o holy_a angel_n themselves_o do_v wonder_n at_o the_o excellency_n of_o thy_o call_n in_o be_v declare_v as_o afore_o then_o if_o they_o will_v have_v it_o they_o must_v seek_v it_o as_o it_o may_v be_v find_v namely_o both_o in_o the_o law_n and_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o not_o in_o the_o gospel_n alone_o and_o first_o in_o the_o law_n then_o in_o the_o gospel_n for_o he_o must_v never_o look_v to_o taste_v the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o have_v not_o first_o swallow_v the_o bitter_a pill_n of_o the_o law_n if_o therefore_o thou_o will_v be_v declare_v righteous_a by_o the_o gospel_n be_v content_a first_o to_o be_v pronounce_v miserable_a by_o the_o law_n if_o thou_o will_v be_v declare_v righteous_a in_o christ_n then_o be_v content_a first_o to_o be_v pronounce_v sinful_a minister_n and_o unrighteous_a in_o thyself_o second_o all_o man_n may_v here_o learn_v how_o they_o be_v to_o esteem_v of_o god_n minister_n and_o what_o reverence_n and_o obedience_n be_v due_a to_o their_o person_n and_o their_o doctrine_n these_o be_v they_o which_o must_v declare_v unto_o thou_o thy_o righteousness_n if_o thou_o have_v any_o be_v thou_o behold_v to_o he_o who_o when_o thou_o have_v lose_v a_o jewel_n which_o be_v all_o thy_o wealth_n can_v tell_v thou_o where_o it_o be_v and_o help_v thou_o to_o it_o again_o or_o to_o he_o who_o when_o thy_o cause_n be_v in_o trial_n at_o the_o bar_n will_v plead_v it_o for_o thou_o or_o to_o he_o who_o when_o and_o thou_o that_o jewel_n of_o righteousness_n which_o be_v and_o be_v the_o whole_a wealth_n of_o thy_o soul_n can_v true_o tell_v thou_o where_o it_o be_v and_o how_o it_o be_v to_o be_v have_v again_o and_o who_o when_o the_o devil_n hail_v thou_o to_o the_o bar_n of_o god_n justice_n to_o receive_v trial_n for_o thy_o sin_n can_v draw_v thou_o there_o such_o a_o declaration_n as_o the_o devil_n himself_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o answer_v and_o who_o when_o thy_o soul_n be_v sick_a to_o death_n and_o even_o to_o damnation_n can_v heal_v the_o deadly_a wound_n thereof_o a_o good_a minister_n therefore_o be_v worthy_a as_o the_o apostle_n say_v of_o double_a honour_n who_o duty_n we_o see_v be_v to_o declare_v unto_o man_n his_o righteousness_n and_o to_o conclude_v this_o point_n also_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o height_n of_o this_o office_n of_o a_o minister_n may_v encourage_v father_n to_o dedicate_v their_o son_n to_o this_o holy_a minister_n call_n for_o the_o physician_n care_v for_o the_o body_n or_o the_o lawyer_n for_o thy_o cause_n be_v both_o inferior_a duty_n to_o this_o of_o the_o mininister_n a_o good_a lawyer_n may_v be_v one_o of_o ten_o a_o good_a physician_n one_o of_o 20._o a_o good_a man_n one_o of_o 100_o but_o a_o good_a minister_n be_v one_o of_o 1000_o a_o good_a lawyer_n may_v declare_v the_o true_a state_n of_o thy_o cause_n a_o good_a physician_n may_v declare_v the_o true_a state_n of_o thy_o body_n no_o calling_n no_o man_n can_v declare_v unto_o thou_o thy_o righteousness_n but_o a_o true_a minister_n and_o thus_o we_o see_v the_o office_n or_o function_n of_o a_o minister_n now_o follow_v the_o blessing_n then_o will_v he_o have_v mercy_n upon_o he_o the_o four_o general_a part_n of_o this_o description_n sinner_n be_v the_o blessing_n which_o god_n give_v to_o the_o labour_n and_o function_n of_o a_o true_a minister_n then_o that_o be_v when_o a_o man_n by_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o law_n be_v bring_v to_o true_a humiliation_n and_o repentance_n and_o by_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o true_a faith_n in_o the_o messiah_n then_o will_v he_o that_o be_v god_n have_v mercy_n on_o he_o that_o be_v on_o the_o penitent_a and_o believe_a sinner_n behold_v here_o the_o admirable_a sympathy_n and_o the_o cooperation_n of_o god_n and_o the_o minister_n office_n man_n preach_v and_o god_n bless_v man_n work_v on_o the_o heart_n and_o god_n give_v grace_n a_o minister_n declare_v unto_o man_n his_o righteousness_n and_o god_n say_v so_o be_v it_o he_o shall_v be_v righteous_a a_o minister_n pronounce_v mercy_n to_o a_o penitent_a sinner_n and_o forthwith_o god_n have_v mercy_n on_o he_o here_o we_o see_v the_o great_a and_o glorious_a together_o account_n which_o god_n make_v of_o the_o word_n of_o his_o minister_n by_o they_o true_o teach_v and_o right_o apply_v namely_o that_o he_o as_o it_o be_v tie_v his_o blessing_n unto_o it_o for_o ordinary_o till_o a_o man_n know_v his_o righteousness_n by_o the_o mean_n of_o a_o interpreter_n god_n have_v not_o mercy_n on_o he_o but_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o do_v know_v it_o then_o as_o we_o see_v here_o god_n will_v have_v mercy_n on_o he_o and_o will_v say_v deliver_v he_o etc._n etc._n this_o be_v no_o small_a honour_n to_o minister_n and_o to_o their_o ministry_n that_o god_n himself_o give_v a_o blessing_n unto_o it_o &_o work_v when_o they_o work_v and_o as_o it_o be_v stay_v wait_v when_o they_o declare_v unto_o a_o man_n his_o righteousness_n and_o then_o have_v he_o mercy_n on_o he_o so_o powerful_a and_o so_o effectual_a be_v the_o word_n speak_v by_o a_o minister_n of_o god_n this_o be_v that_o 16._o which_o christ_n avouch_v whatsoever_o you_o lose_v in_o earth_n shall_v be_v loose_v in_o heaven_n will_v 23._o you_o know_v the_o meaning_n hereof_o read_v saint_n john_n who_o sin_n soever_o you_o remit_v they_o be_v remit_v who_o you_o retain_v they_o be_v 26._o retain_v will_v you_o have_v the_o meaning_n of_o both_o read_v isaiah_n god_n destroy_v the_o token_n of_o soothsayer_n and_o make_v wizard_n and_o astrologer_n fool_n turn_v worldly_a wiseman_n backward_o still_o rebel_a against_o the_o will_n of_o god_n he_o therefore_o declare_v unto_o he_o his_o unrighteousness_n &_o his_o sin_n &_o denounce_v unto_o he_o the_o misery_n &_o curse_n of_o god_n justice_n as_o due_a unto_o he_o for_o the_o same_o here_o he_o bind_v on_o earth_n here_o he_o retain_v on_o earth_n this_o man_n sin_n be_v likewise_o bind_v &_o retain_v in_o heaven_n on_o the_o other_o side_n he_o see_v a_o man_n penitent_a &_o believe_v he_o pronounce_v forgiveness_n of_o sin_n &_o happiness_n unto_o he_o for_o the_o same_o he_o lose_v he_o from_o the_o band_n of_o his_o conscience_n and_o then_o of_o the_o church_n thou_o be_v to_o rest_v therein_o as_o in_o the_o voice_n of_o god_n send_v and_o this_o be_v the_o call_n that_o we_o be_v to_o look_v for_o in_o these_o day_n by_o which_o doctrine_n as_o those_o be_v just_o condemn_v of_o foul_a presumption_n who_o dare_v run_v upon_o private_a motion_n and_o carnal_a respect_n and_o be_v just_o leave_v go_v enlarge_v their_o heart_n and_o harden_v their_o forehead_n and_o give_v power_n unto_o their_o word_n to_o conver_n this_o child_n &_o to_o confound_v and_o astonish_v the_o heart_n of_o his_o
