those_o that_o have_v be_v acquaint_v with_o this_o point_n that_o i_o be_o upon_o of_o prepare_v for_o duty_n they_o have_v come_v to_o such_o a_o frame_n of_o spirit_n as_o that_o there_o be_v not_o so_o much_o time_n require_v of_o they_o as_o of_o other_o for_o they_o be_v in_o a_o constant_a fitness_n so_o that_o there_o be_v no_o instant_n of_o time_n in_o the_o whole_a day_n but_o if_o god_n call_v they_o to_o prayer_n they_o can_v present_o fall_v down_o upon_o their_o knee_n and_o pray_v so_o as_o to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o prayer_n that_o be_v a_o excellent_a temper_n indeed_o if_o you_o can_v find_v it_o so_o that_o you_o walk_v so_o spiritual_o and_o holy_o before_o god_n as_o there_o can_v be_v never_o a_o quarter_n of_o a_o hour_n from_o morning_n to_o night_n nor_o from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o week_n to_o the_o end_n but_o if_o you_o be_v call_v to_o pray_v or_o to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n you_o have_v your_o heart_n fit_v that_o you_o can_v come_v into_o god_n presence_n with_o a_o prepare_a heart_n and_o be_v able_a to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o the_o duty_n acquaint_v yourselves_o with_o this_o work_n of_o preparation_n and_o so_o you_o may_v be_v suppose_v that_o through_o their_o exercise_n in_o the_o way_n of_o godliness_n and_o keep_v of_o their_o heart_n constant_a with_o god_n in_o communion_n with_o he_o walk_v with_o god_n close_o that_o they_o be_v at_o all_o time_n prepare_v to_o every_o good_a work_n and_o 〈◊〉_d fulfil_v that_o command_n of_o the_o apostle_n pray_v continual_o that_o be_v in_o the_o disposition_n of_o their_o heart_n they_o be_v fit_a to_o pray_v at_o any_o time_n there_o be_v no_o day_n in_o the_o week_n nor_o no_o hour_n in_o the_o day_n but_o they_o if_o god_n call_v they_o to_o it_o can_v fall_v down_o to_o solemn_a craier_n and_o indeed_o this_o be_v a_o excellent_a condition_n and_o a_o good_a evidence_n of_o the_o heart_n walk_v close_o with_o god_n that_o there_o be_v no_o time_n but_o they_o be_v fit_a to_o pray_v and_o fit_a for_o any_o ordinance_n yea_o to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n upper_a it_o be_v possible_a to_o keep_v the_o heart_n so_o close_o to_o god_n as_o to_o be_v fit_a for_o prayer_n and_o for_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n and_o for_o receive_v of_o the_o sacrament_n every_o day_n or_o any_o hour_n in_o the_o day_n but_o this_o need_v a_o very_a close_o walk_v with_o god_n and_o communion_n with_o god_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v this_o be_v very_o rare_a most_o man_n let_v out_o their_o heart_n so_o much_o to_o other_o thing_n as_o their_o conscience_n can_v but_o tell_v they_o that_o if_o god_n call_v they_o to_o prayer_n at_o such_o a_o time_n in_o the_o day_n they_o be_v altogether_o unfit_a for_o it_o if_o they_o be_v call_v to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n their_o conscience_n will_v fly_v in_o their_o face_n and_o tell_v they_o they_o be_v unfit_a for_o it_o but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o those_o that_o walk_v close_o with_o god_n though_o they_o be_v in_o the_o world_n you_o will_v say_v if_o a_o man_n have_v business_n in_o the_o world_n how_o can_v this_o be_v yes_o though_o they_o have_v buâ—â—neâ—e_v in_o the_o world_n yet_o they_o carry_v the_o heavenlinesse_n of_o their_o heart_n along_o with_o they_o our_o conversation_n be_v in_o heaven_n say_v the_o apostle_n phil._n 3._o now_o the_o word_n that_o be_v translate_v our_o conversation_n it_o be_v a_o word_n that_o signify_v our_o city_n converse_v our_o trade_n be_v in_o heaven_n when_o we_o go_v to_o the_o city_n or_o the_o exchange_n or_o about_o any_o business_n yet_o our_o trade_n be_v always_o in_o heaven_n but_o now_o there_o be_v other_o sort_n of_o people_n that_o have_v need_n at_o all_o time_n to_o look_v to_o their_o heart_n in_o way_n of_o preparation_n as_o first_o those_o that_o first_o set_v upon_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n young_a beginner_n that_o begin_v at_o first_o to_o set_v their_o face_n towards_o heaven_n to_o worship_n god_n they_o have_v need_n look_v to_o their_o heart_n they_o shall_v spend_v some_o time_n in_o preparation_n when_o they_o come_v to_o holy_a duty_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v when_o the_o conscience_n of_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v at_o first_o enlighten_v and_o awaken_v they_o will_v be_v very_o careful_a in_o prepare_v to_o holy_a duty_n the_o fear_n of_o god_n it_o be_v mighty_a upon_o their_o spirit_n at_o first_o and_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v less_o afterward_o the_o constancy_n of_o god_n fear_v shall_v bring_v their_o heart_n to_o such_o a_o holy_a temper_n as_o to_o make_v they_o fit_a for_o holy_a duty_n always_o second_o those_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o at_o any_o time_n shall_v sin_v against_o conscience_n shall_v commit_v such_o sin_n as_o shall_v in_o a_o kind_n even_o lie_v waste_a conscience_n shall_v break_v their_o peace_n between_o god_n and_o their_o soul_n they_o have_v need_n spend_v some_o time_n in_o preparation_n for_o holy_a duty_n they_o can_v come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o god_n but_o they_o have_v need_n before_o hand_n be_v very_o serious_a in_o the_o examination_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o to_o endeavour_v the_o work_n of_o their_o heart_n into_o mourning_n for_o their_o sin_n and_o to_o labour_v to_o possess_v their_o soul_n with_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n even_o before_o they_o come_v these_o two_o sort_n of_o people_n such_o as_o have_v not_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o way_n of_o godliness_n or_o such_o as_o have_v break_v their_o peace_n with_o god_n by_o some_o evil_a carriage_n of_o they_o towards_o god_n in_o some_o vile_a way_n i_o say_v it_o be_v require_v of_o they_o to_o be_v more_o solemn_a in_o the_o work_n of_o preparation_n 2_o but_o now_o for_o the_o second_o case_n which_o indeed_o be_v the_o main_a suppose_v when_o we_o come_v to_o duty_n and_o begin_v to_o examine_v our_o heart_n and_o begin_v to_o bethink_v ourselves_o whether_o we_o be_v prepare_v yea_o or_o no_o to_o holy_a duty_n and_o we_o do_v not_o find_v our_o heart_n prepare_v according_a to_o that_o that_o we_o do_v desire_n whether_o then_o we_o may_v let_v the_o duty_n go_v for_o that_o time_n and_o forbear_v the_o performance_n of_o it_o as_o suppose_v prayer_n or_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n or_o come_v to_o the_o word_n or_o any_o other_o holy_a duty_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o doubt_n be_v because_o when_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v conscientious_a they_o think_v with_o themselves_o that_o they_o must_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n now_o if_o they_o can_v find_v their_o heart_n in_o a_o fâ—t_o disposition_n to_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n they_o be_v ready_a to_o think_v thus_o be_v it_o not_o better_a to_o neglect_v this_o duty_n and_o lay_v it_o aside_o for_o the_o present_a will_v god_n accept_v of_o a_o duty_n when_o i_o perform_v it_o and_o be_o not_o fit_a for_o it_o therefore_o for_o the_o answer_n to_o this_o because_o it_o be_v a_o temptation_n that_o sometime_o carnal_a heart_n have_v and_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o take_v this_o
because_o than_o we_o shall_v and_o if_o we_o worship_n god_n as_o we_o ought_v we_o do_v act_v our_o faith_n and_o humility_n and_o all_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n we_o do_v act_v they_o as_o it_o be_v upon_o god_n when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o that_o be_v require_v in_o every_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o you_o shall_v stir_v up_o the_o faculty_n of_o your_o soul_n and_o all_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o you_o shall_v act_v they_o upon_o god_n when_o you_o be_v worship_v of_o he_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o come_v with_o grace_n when_o you_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n but_o there_o must_v be_v a_o act_n of_o that_o grace_n upon_o god_n and_o so_o we_o find_v in_o scripture_n that_o the_o act_n of_o grace_n upon_o god_n it_o be_v a_o draw_v near_o to_o he_o therefore_o in_o isa_n 29._o 13._o the_o lord_n complain_v there_o this_o people_n draw_v near_o to_o i_o with_o their_o lip_n but_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o i_o as_o if_o god_n shall_v say_v indeed_o they_o come_v and_o speak_v to_o i_o and_o therefore_o they_o think_v they_o draw_v nigh_o to_o i_o but_o i_o expect_v that_o their_o heart_n shall_v be_v act_v upon_o i_o that_o be_v the_o meaning_n and_o in_o zeph._n 3._o 2._o god_n complain_v there_o of_o his_o people_n that_o they_o do_v not_o draw_v near_o to_o he_o as_o they_o shall_v and_o it_o appear_v plain_o god_n now_o when_o be_v there_o a_o time_n for_o the_o act_n of_o our_o grace_n upon_o god_n so_o as_o when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n and_o therefore_o in_o isa_n 64._o 7._o the_o lord_n complain_v there_o that_o no_o man_n do_v stir_v up_o himself_o to_o take_v hold_n on_o he_o when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n we_o shall_v stir_v up_o ourselves_o to_o take_v hold_n of_o god_n and_o thus_o you_o see_v in_o what_o respect_v the_o soul_n may_v be_v say_v to_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n when_o it_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o now_o for_o the_o application_n of_o this_o point_n come_v to_o perform_v any_o act_n of_o worship_n true_o this_o one_o thing_n will_v be_v of_o marvellous_a use_n and_o it_o will_v help_v forward_o to_o the_o next_o point_n of_o sanctify_v of_o god_n name_n this_o you_o be_v all_o convince_v of_o that_o it_o be_v your_o duty_n to_o worship_n god_n when_o you_o pray_v you_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n when_o you_o come_v to_o hear_v his_o word_n you_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o and_o when_o you_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n you_o worship_v he_o now_o if_o i_o shall_v come_v from_o one_o end_n of_o the_o congregation_n to_o the_o other_o and_o ask_v every_o one_o of_o you_o this_o question_n it_o be_v your_o duty_n to_o worship_n god_n be_v it_o not_o yes_o that_o you_o will_v all_o be_v ready_a to_o answer_v and_o what_o do_v you_o do_v when_o you_o worship_n god_n i_o fear_v that_o this_o second_o question_n will_v gravel_n many_o you_o will_v say_v we_o must_v pray_v to_o god_n and_o serve_v he_o and_o hear_v his_o word_n and_o go_v to_o the_o communionâ—_n yea_o but_o what_o do_v your_o soul_n do_v in_o this_o work_n of_o worship_v of_o god_n this_o shall_v be_v the_o answer_n and_o so_o you_o shall_v think_v with_o yourselves_o and_o charge_v this_o upon_o your_o own_o heart_n i_o be_o now_o go_v to_o worship_n god_n either_o in_o prayer_n word_n or_o sacrament_n i_o be_o now_o go_v to_o tender_v up_o that_o homage_n that_o be_v due_a from_o a_o creature_n to_o the_o infinite_a creator_n so_o that_o i_o must_v so_o pray_v as_o i_o must_v manifest_v that_o high_a respect_n that_o i_o owe_v to_o god_n as_o my_o creator_n but_o that_o i_o shall_v speak_v to_o more_o afterward_o only_o now_o remember_v this_o that_o you_o do_v profess_v every_o time_n you_o go_v to_o prayer_n that_o you_o go_v to_o tender_v up_o that_o homage_n that_o you_o owe_v unto_o god_n and_o so_o every_o time_n you_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n there_o be_v a_o profession_n that_o you_o come_v to_o tender_v up_o that_o respect_n and_o homage_n that_o you_o owe_v to_o the_o infinite_a god_n and_o so_o likewise_o when_o you_o come_v to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n now_o when_o we_o come_v to_o offer_v a_o present_a to_o man_n we_o know_v how_o we_o prepare_v and_o with_o what_o suitable_a presence_n we_o desire_v to_o offer_v but_o of_o that_o afterward_o when_o we_o come_v to_o speak_v of_o sanctify_a god_n name_v 2_o second_o remember_v when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n i_o come_v to_o set_v myself_o before_o the_o lord_n in_o those_o way_n that_o god_n do_v let_v out_o the_o choice_n of_o his_o mercy_n to_o his_o people_n in_o i_o have_v many_o mercy_n from_o god_n in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o creature_n but_o when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o i_o expect_v the_o communication_n of_o his_o mercy_n in_o another_o way_n then_o through_o any_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n be_v the_o chief_a channel_n that_o god_n do_v let_v out_o the_o choice_a of_o his_o mercy_n to_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n through_o and_o now_o i_o be_o go_v to_o worship_n he_o i_o be_o go_v to_o present_v myself_o fore_o god_n indeed_o there_o be_v a_o little_a glimmer_n of_o the_o light_n of_o god_n through_o other_o creature_n to_o i_o but_o the_o glorious_a beam_n of_o the_o light_n of_o god_n be_v through_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n 3_o and_o then_o three_o i_o be_o now_o go_v to_o act_v my_o soul_n upon_o god_n so_o that_o if_o i_o have_v any_o ability_n to_o close_v with_o god_n to_o act_v my_o soul_n upon_o he_o it_o must_v be_v put_v forth_o now_o at_o this_o time_n i_o be_o indeed_o at_o all_o time_n to_o labour_n to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o god_n when_o i_o see_v the_o creature_n the_o sun_n and_o moon_n and_o star_n to_o labour_n to_o lift_v up_o my_o heart_n to_o god_n and_o when_o i_o see_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n in_o the_o sea_n and_o for_o my_o meat_n and_o drink_n i_o be_o to_o bless_v god_n and_o to_o acknowledge_v god_n in_o all_o but_o now_o when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n than_o all_o the_o strength_n of_o my_o soul_n be_v to_o be_v act_v upon_o god_n in_o a_o more_o special_a manner_n i_o must_v then_o above_o all_o labour_n to_o stir_v up_o whatsoever_o i_o have_v in_o my_o soul_n to_o act_v upon_o god_n this_o be_v now_o to_o worship_n god_n second_o 2_o if_o to_o worship_n god_n be_v to_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n hence_o we_o see_v the_o reason_n why_o guilty_a conscience_n have_v little_a mind_n to_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n when_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n have_v give_v liberty_n to_o any_o licentious_a way_n &_o sin_v against_o their_o conscience_n if_o they_o have_v any_o light_n in_o their_o conscience_n it_o be_v one_o of_o the_o tedious_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v to_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n they_o have_v rather_o do_v any_o thing_n then_o to_o come_v to_o holy_a duty_n as_o to_o prayer_n and_o especial_o to_o secret_a prayer_n a_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o have_v a_o enlighten_v conscience_n and_o be_v under_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n the_o come_n to_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n be_v a_o very_a grievous_a burden_n to_o they_o why_o here_o be_v the_o reason_n because_o to_o worship_n god_n be_v to_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n and_o the_o guilt_n that_o be_v upon_o they_o have_v make_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n terrible_a to_o they_o and_o therefore_o they_o have_v rather_o go_v into_o their_o company_n &_o be_v merry_a eat_v drink_v sport_n or_o any_o thing_n rather_o than_o to_o heart_n look_v to_o thy_o foot_n when_o thou_o come_v into_o the_o house_n of_o god_n eccle._n 5._o 1._o now_o for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o draw_v nigh_o to_o he_o we_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o open_v it_o 1_o first_o in_o show_v you_o wherein_o the_o sanctification_n of_o god_n name_n consist_v or_o what_o we_o shall_v do_v that_o we_o may_v sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o ourselves_o in_o at_o any_o time_n second_o a_o right_a behaviour_n of_o our_o soul_n in_o it_o in_o these_o two_o thing_n consist_v the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o his_o worship_n now_o under_o these_o two_o head_n all_o that_o i_o shall_v speak_v about_o the_o open_n of_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n will_v be_v contain_v at_o this_o time_n i_o shall_v only_o speak_v of_o the_o first_o the_o due_a preparation_n of_o the_o soul_n unto_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n therein_o consist_v a_o special_a part_n of_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o draw_v nigh_o to_o he_o and_o that_o it_o be_v so_o we_o find_v it_o in_o scripture_n that_o preparation_n for_o worship_n it_o be_v call_v the_o sanctify_a of_o ourselves_o and_o by_o find_v this_o in_o scripture_n it_o hint_v i_o upon_o this_o head_n to_o speak_v of_o the_o preparation_n unto_o worship_n in_o our_o sanctify_a god_n name_v because_o i_o find_v in_o scripture_n that_o the_o sanctify_a ourselves_o for_o worship_n and_o the_o preparation_n of_o ourselves_o for_o worship_n be_v all_o one_o i_o will_v give_v you_o these_o two_o text_n in_o 1_o sam._n 16._o 5._o you_o shall_v find_v there_o that_o samuel_n when_o he_o be_v send_v by_o god_n to_o anoint_v david_n in_o bethlem_n the_o text_n say_v i_o be_o come_v to_o sacrifice_n unto_o the_o lord_n sanctify_v yourselves_o and_o come_v with_o i_o to_o the_o sacrifice_n do_v you_o come_v peaceable_o say_v they_o yes_o what_o then_o sanctify_v yourselves_o and_o come_v with_o i_o to_o the_o sacrifice_n that_o be_v all_o one_o sanctify_v of_o god_n in_o our_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n to_o make_v a_o due_a preparation_n for_o his_o holy_a worship_n now_o for_o the_o orderly_a handle_n of_o thing_n 1._o first_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o that_o we_o must_v prepare_v for_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n 2_o second_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o wherein_o this_o preparation_n for_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n do_v consist_v 3_o this_o or_o what_o great_a good_a there_o be_v in_o preparation_n for_o god_n worship_n 4._o four_o i_o shall_v answer_v a_o case_n of_o conscience_n or_o two_o 5._o five_o i_o will_v show_v you_o what_o be_v the_o behaviour_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o sanctify_a god_n name_v 6_o sixthly_a the_o reason_n why_o god_n will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n first_o that_o there_o must_v be_v preparation_n to_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n for_o first_o that_o god_n that_o we_o come_v to_o worship_n 1_o be_v a_o great_a and_o glorious_a god_n and_o we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o such_o a_o infinite_a glorious_a dreadful_a majesty_n it_o be_v fit_a that_o we_o shall_v make_v preparation_n when_o we_o come_v nigh_o unto_o he_o therefore_o in_o exod._n 19_o 10._o when_o god_n come_v among_o the_o people_n to_o give_v they_o his_o law_n he_o do_v require_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v sanctify_v to_o day_n and_o tomorrow_o and_o that_o they_o shall_v wash_v their_o clothes_n and_o be_v ready_a against_o the_o three_o day_n for_o the_o three_o day_n the_o lord_n will_v come_v down_o upon_o mount_n sinai_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o all_o the_o people_n god_n do_v not_o so_o much_o stand_v upon_o their_o clothes_n but_o it_o be_v to_o signify_v a_o inward_a wash_n now_o my_o brethren_n if_o when_o god_n come_v to_o give_v the_o law_n they_o be_v so_o to_o prepare_v then_o certain_o when_o we_o be_v to_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n we_o be_v to_o prepare_v as_o well_o as_o they_o because_o god_n be_v come_v for_o that_o that_o be_v observable_a be_v why_o they_o be_v for_o two_o day_n together_o to_o make_v such_o preparation_n the_o argument_n be_v because_o of_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n the_o lord_n say_v to_o moses_n go_v and_o sanctify_v the_o people_n to_o day_n and_o to_o morrow_n and_o let_v they_o wash_v their_o clothes_n and_o be_v ready_a against_o the_o three_o day_n why_o for_o the_o lord_n will_v come_v down_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o all_o the_o people_n upon_o mount_n sinai_n the_o lord_n will_v come_v down_o the_o three_o day_n and_o therefore_o let_v they_o be_v sanctify_v so_o when_o thou_o go_v to_o worship_n god_n thou_o expect_v or_o shall_v expect_v that_o god_n will_v come_v to_o thou_o and_o that_o thy_o heart_n shall_v be_v draw_v to_o god_n and_o therefore_o thou_o shall_v make_v some_o preparation_n for_o the_o time_n of_o preparation_n we_o shall_v speak_v to_o afterward_o when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o case_n of_o conscience_n about_o preparation_n for_o worship_n and_o so_o in_o 1_o chr._n 22._o 5._o 14._o david_n make_v preparation_n for_o the_o house_n of_o god_n because_o it_o be_v the_o house_n of_o god_n that_o he_o have_v to_o build_v though_o he_o can_v not_o do_v it_o himself_o in_o his_o own_o time_n yet_o be_v the_o house_n of_o god_n what_o great_a preparation_n be_v make_v by_o david_n the_o moral_a of_o which_o be_v this_o that_o the_o house_n of_o god_n be_v a_o type_n of_o the_o church_n and_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n as_o well_o as_o of_o christ_n it_o show_v that_o there_o shall_v be_v much_o preparation_n when_o we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o his_o ordinance_n second_o 2_o as_o god_n be_v great_a that_o we_o draw_v nigh_o to_o so_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n be_v great_a duty_n they_o be_v the_o great_a thing_n that_o do_v concern_v we_o in_o this_o world_n and_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o a_o very_a carnal_a heart_n to_o slight_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n to_o make_v account_n of_o they_o as_o little_a matter_n carnal_a heart_n ordinary_o the_o thing_n that_o concern_v their_o business_n in_o the_o world_n they_o think_v great_a matter_n oh_o i_o may_v not_o neglect_v that_o i_o may_v not_o neglect_v that_o i_o may_v not_o neglect_v such_o a_o business_n or_o i_o may_v not_o neglect_v to_o visit_v or_o gratify_v such_o a_o friend_n but_o now_o for_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n it_o be_v good_a indeed_o but_o whither_o it_o be_v do_v or_o not_o it_o be_v no_o great_a matter_n therefore_o they_o can_v put_v off_o prayer_n if_o they_o have_v any_o business_n the_o time_n of_o prayer_n must_v pay_v for_o it_o they_o can_v put_v off_o that_o upon_o any_o slight_a occasion_n they_o do_v not_o account_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_v great_a matter_n my_o brethren_n i_o beseech_v you_o learn_v this_o lesson_n this_o morning_n to_o account_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_v great_a matter_n they_o be_v the_o great_a thing_n that_o do_v concern_v you_o here_o in_o this_o world_n for_o they_o be_v the_o homage_n that_o you_o tender_v up_o to_o the_o high_a god_n as_o you_o hear_v and_o those_o thing_n wherein_o god_n communicat_o himself_n in_o his_o choice_n mercy_n now_o be_v such_o great_a matter_n there_o be_v cause_n that_o we_o shall_v prepare_v for_o that_o one_o thing_n of_o prayer_n say_v luther_n it_o be_v a_o great_a work_n and_o a_o difficult_a work_n and_o therefore_o there_o have_v need_n be_v preparation_n for_o it_o business_n of_o great_a consequence_n we_o make_v preparation_n for_o indeed_o if_o a_o business_n be_v a_o slight_a business_n we_o can_v fall_v upon_o it_o on_o a_o sudden_a you_o make_v not_o preparation_n to_o go_v in_o a_o boat_n in_o the_o thames_n but_o to_o go_v a_o voyage_n you_o make_v great_a preparation_n now_o if_o man_n and_o woman_n will_v but_o understand_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n to_o be_v great_a they_o will_v see_v a_o necessity_n to_o make_v a_o preparation_n many_o man_n for_o want_n of_o preparation_n to_o duty_n they_o lose_v a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o time_n when_o they_o come_v to_o perform_v a_o duty_n of_o worship_n in_o prayer_n they_o spend_v half_o the_o time_n that_o be_v convenient_a to_o be_v spend_v in_o prayer_n before_o they_o begin_v to_o pray_v and_o so_o in_o hear_v the_o word_n they_o be_v a_o long_a time_n before_o they_o can_v settle_v themselves_o to_o attend_v to_o the_o word_n or_o in_o any_o other_o kind_n of_o worship_n i_o say_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o time_n in_o the_o worship_n be_v spend_v ordinary_o before_o we_o can_v get_v our_o heart_n to_o close_v with_o the_o worship_n now_o that_o be_v a_o sore_a and_o a_o great_a evil_a to_o lose_v any_o part_n of_o the_o time_n of_o worship_n christian_n i_o beseech_v you_o account_v high_o of_o the_o time_n of_o your_o worship_n you_o have_v be_v so_o long_a time_n at_o prayer_n yea_o but_o how_o much_o of_o it_o have_v be_v lose_v because_o you_o have_v not_o prepare_v before_o hand_n for_o it_o perhaps_o you_o kneel_v upon_o your_o knee_n but_o you_o be_v a_o long_a time_n before_o you_o can_v get_v your_o heart_n warm_a at_o your_o work_n why_o you_o shall_v have_v be_v warm_a before_o you_o have_v come_v it_o be_v so_o oftentimes_o with_o many_o man_n when_o they_o meet_v together_o and_o there_o be_v no_o preparation_n for_o their_o business_n they_o come_v together_o and_o they_o be_v a_o long_a time_n before_o they_o can_v buckle_v to_o the_o business_n that_o they_o come_v about_o because_o there_o be_v no_o preparation_n but_o if_o there_o be_v preparation_n make_v that_o every_o man_n know_v before_o hand_n what_o his_o work_n be_v they_o can_v fall_v to_o it_o and_o they_o can_v dispatch_v as_o much_o in_o one_o hour_n as_o other_o do_v in_o two_o or_o three_o but_o of_o that_o we_o shall_v speak_v more_o afterward_o three_o 3_o there_o must_v be_v preparation_n because_o our_o heart_n be_v natural_o exceed_o unprepared_a for_o every_o good_a work_n we_o be_v all_o natural_o even_o reprobate_a to_o every_o good_a work_n the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n be_v high_a and_o spiritual_a and_o holy_a thing_n but_o by_o nature_n our_o heart_n grovel_v in_o the_o dirt_n and_o we_o be_v carnal_a sensual_a drossy_a dead_a slight_a sottish_a and_o vain_a altogether_o unfit_a to_o come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n oh_o that_o we_o be_v but_o apprehensive_a and_o senfible_a of_o the_o unfitnesse_n of_o our_o heart_n to_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n perhaps_o because_o thou_o know_v not_o god_n thou_o can_v rush_v into_o his_o presence_n without_o any_o more_o ado_n but_o if_o thou_o know_v thyself_o and_o god_n thou_o can_v not_o but_o see_v thyself_o altogether_o unfit_a for_o his_o presence_n and_o so_o as_o to_o wonder_v that_o the_o lord_n shall_v not_o spurn_v thou_o out_o of_o his_o presence_n every_o time_n thou_o come_v unto_o he_o there_o have_v need_v then_o be_v preparation_n because_o we_o be_v so_o unfit_a to_o come_v into_o his_o presence_n four_o 4_o there_o have_v need_n be_v preparation_n because_o of_o the_o great_a hindrance_n of_o the_o worship_n
general_a head_n of_o our_o meditation_n for_o our_o preparation_n to_o duty_n viz._n what_o god_n he_o be_v we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o meditate_v of_o god_n in_o his_o attribute_n and_o then_o meditate_v of_o the_o weight_n of_o our_o duty_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o they_o and_o the_o rule_n of_o they_o and_o the_o end_n of_o they_o get_v your_o heart_n possess_v with_o meditation_n of_o this_o nature_n and_o in_o this_o as_o a_o special_a thing_n do_v consist_v your_o preparation_n to_o holy_a duty_n and_o that_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n 2_o the_o second_o thing_n wherein_o the_o preparation_n to_o a_o duty_n consist_v it_o be_v in_o this_o in_o the_o take_n off_o of_o the_o heart_n from_o every_o sinful_a way_n the_o endeavour_n at_o least_o if_o there_o be_v iniquity_n in_o thy_o hand_n or_o heart_n labour_n to_o put_v it_o out_o when_o thou_o be_v come_v into_o god_n presence_n do_v not_o bring_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n the_o love_n of_o any_o sin_n in_o thy_o heart_n but_o labour_v to_o put_v it_o from_o thy_o heart_n in_o 2_o chron._n 29._o 5._o we_o find_v there_o what_o be_v require_v to_o preparation_n the_o text_n say_v hezekiah_n say_v unto_o they_o hear_v i_o you_o levit_n sanctify_v now_o yourselves_o and_o sanctify_v the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n god_n of_o your_o father_n and_o carry_v forth_o the_o filthiness_n out_o of_o the_o holy_a place_n that_o be_v sanctify_v a_o thing_n to_o carry_v forth_o the_o filthiness_n out_o of_o that_o thing_n that_o we_o will_v sanctify_v so_o the_o sanctify_a of_o our_o heart_n it_o be_v by_o carry_v forth_o the_o filthiness_n out_o of_o our_o heart_n so_o as_o to_o be_v fit_a for_o a_o duty_n and_o in_o job_n 11._o 13_o 14._o if_o thou_o prepare_v thy_o heart_n and_o siretch_v out_o thy_o hand_n towards_o he_o what_o then_o if_o iniquity_n he_o in_o thy_o hand_n put_v it_o far_o away_o and_o let_v not_o wickedness_v well_o in_o thy_o tabernacle_n these_o two_o must_v be_v together_o 3_o a_o three_o thing_n be_v this_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n it_o be_v the_o disintangle_a of_o the_o heart_n from_o the_o world_n and_o from_o all_o occasion_n and_o business_n in_o the_o world_n i_o be_o to_o worship_n god_n but_o how_o be_v my_o heart_n ensnare_v and_o entangle_v in_o this_o and_o the_o other_o business_n now_o when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n i_o must_v lay_v aside_o all_o for_o there_o be_v the_o preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n the_o separate_n of_o it_o for_o such_o a_o work_n for_o that_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o sanctification_n the_o separate_n of_o a_o thing_n from_o a_o common_a use_n i_o be_o to_o worship_n god_n now_o i_o must_v labour_v to_o separate_v my_o heart_n from_o a_o common_a use_n at_o other_o time_n god_n give_v i_o liberty_n to_o let_v out_o my_o heart_n to_o common_a use_n but_o now_o when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o i_o must_v separate_v my_o heart_n from_o all_o common_a use_n that_o my_o heart_n may_v be_v whole_o for_o god_n i_o remember_v it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o story_n of_o cieil_n which_o be_v lord_n treasurer_n that_o when_o he_o go_v to_o read_v he_o will_v lay_v his_o gown_n off_o and_o say_v lie_v there_o lord_n cieil_n so_o when_o we_o go_v to_o duty_n we_o shall_v say_v lie_v by_o world_n and_o by_o lay_v aside_o the_o world_n i_o mean_v lay_v aside_o of_o all_o household_n affair_n or_o affair_n in_o trade_n etc._n etc._n i_o must_v be_v as_o one_o that_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v in_o the_o world_n for_o that_o time_n it_o be_v true_a the_o time_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v holy_a for_o this_o as_o the_o time_n of_o the_o sabbath_n day_n be_v holy_a you_o will_v say_v why_o may_v not_o any_o time_n be_v say_v to_o be_v holy_a that_o i_o spend_v in_o holy_a duty_n no_o that_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o make_v time_n holy_a for_o the_o time_n that_o god_n make_v holy_a it_o be_v not_o holy_a because_o of_o the_o duty_n that_o i_o perform_v in_o it_o but_o the_o duty_n that_o i_o perform_v then_o be_v more_o acceptable_a because_o they_o be_v do_v in_o such_o a_o time_n and_o so_o that_o make_v a_o place_n holy_a not_o because_o it_o be_v appoint_v for_o holy_a duty_n and_o use_n but_o because_o it_o be_v so_o appoint_v by_o god_n and_o the_o perform_v a_o duty_n in_o that_o place_n be_v more_o acceptable_a to_o god_n then_o in_o another_o place_n but_o now_o though_o we_o can_v make_v our_o time_n holy_a in_o that_o second_o sense_n yet_o in_o the_o first_o it_o be_v time_n set_v apart_o for_o a_o holy_a use_n and_o in_o that_o regard_n it_o be_v holy_a and_o so_o we_o shall_v look_v upon_o it_o as_o not_o to_o have_v our_o outward_a business_n to_o devour_v that_o time_n that_o be_v holy_a in_o that_o regard_n as_o nehemiah_n when_o tobiah_n and_o sanballat_n send_v to_o he_o to_o come_v and_o confer_v with_o they_o no_o say_v he_o i_o can_v go_v for_o the_o work_n be_v great_a that_o i_o have_v to_o do_v so_o we_o must_v not_o entangle_v ourselves_o to_o meddle_v with_o other_o thing_n when_o we_o be_v to_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n for_o our_o work_n be_v great_a the_o four_o thing_n for_o preparation_n be_v to_z watch_z and_o to_o pray_v we_o shall_v watch_v over_o our_o heart_n lest_o they_o be_v make_v unfit_a for_o duty_n so_o we_o shall_v prepare_v for_o prayer_n all_o day_n long_o in_o this_o sense_n that_o be_v we_o shall_v watch_v over_o our_o heart_n that_o they_o be_v not_o let_v out_o so_o far_o as_o to_o hinder_v we_o in_o prayer_n when_o we_o come_v to_o do_v it_o i_o remember_v that_o tertullian_n say_v that_o the_o christian_n do_v so_o sup_v as_o if_o that_o they_o be_v to_o pray_v so_o when_o thou_o be_v in_o company_n thou_o shall_v watch_v unto_o prayer_n oh_o that_o you_o do_v so_o you_o can_v but_o be_v conscious_a to_o yourselves_o that_o oftentimes_o when_o you_o have_v be_v in_o company_n your_o heart_n have_v be_v put_v out_o of_o tune_n and_o frame_v that_o you_o have_v be_v no_o way_n fit_a for_o prayer_n when_o you_o come_v home_o your_o house_n and_o family_n find_v it_o so_o you_o that_o take_v such_o delight_n in_o company_n and_o fit_v up_o late_o i_o appeal_v to_o your_o conscience_n whither_o you_o can_v come_v home_o and_o find_v yourselves_o fit_a either_o in_o your_o family_n or_o closet_n to_o go_v and_o open_v your_o heart_n to_o god_n this_o be_v one_o note_v by_o the_o way_n whereby_o you_o may_v come_v to_o know_v whither_o you_o have_v be_v immoderate_a in_o company_n at_o any_o time_n god_n give_v not_o man_n liberty_n to_o be_v busy_a in_o any_o outward_a occasion_n in_o the_o world_n so_o as_o to_o unfit_a they_o for_o his_o service_n preparation_n consist_v in_o that_o in_o watch_v over_o your_o heart_n that_o you_o good_a sign_n that_o thy_o heart_n may_v be_v upright_o with_o god_n though_o through_o infirmity_n it_o come_v at_o such_o a_o time_n to_o be_v unprepared_a for_o the_o duty_n but_o yet_o suppose_v i_o find_v i_o be_o not_o prepare_v i_o be_o grieve_a and_o trouble_v at_o it_o for_o that_o must_v be_v premise_v whether_o be_v i_o better_a to_o leave_v the_o duty_n for_o this_o time_n then_o to_o excellent_a speech_n that_o i_o read_v that_o luther_n have_v concern_v himself_o i_o have_v learn_v this_o by_o experience_n that_o the_o often_o i_o do_v omit_v duty_n the_o often_o do_v i_o make_v myself_o the_o more_o unfit_a for_o duty_n and_o cause_n i_o have_v to_o abhor_v myself_o it_o be_v not_o the_o defer_v that_o make_v thou_o the_o more_o fit_a 2_o therefore_o consider_v that_o this_o be_v but_o a_o temptation_n and_o that_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n that_o i_o will_v propound_v to_o those_o that_o shall_v omit_v a_o duty_n because_o they_o be_v not_o prepare_v that_o this_o be_v but_o a_o temptation_n to_o keep_v thou_o from_o it_o to_o tell_v thou_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o prepare_v and_o if_o thou_o shall_v forbear_v it_o because_o thou_o be_v not_o prepare_v in_o this_o and_o praise_n of_o god_n that_o the_o name_n of_o the_o bless_a god_n may_v be_v honour_v now_o i_o be_o go_v to_o prayer_n oh_o that_o i_o may_v pray_v so_o as_o i_o may_v lift_v up_o god_n name_n i_o be_o go_v to_o hear_v oh_o that_o i_o may_v hear_v so_o as_o god_n may_v be_v honour_v by_o my_o hear_n it_o be_v this_o that_o carry_v i_o on_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o make_v i_o rise_v ready_o and_o to_o go_v forth_o cheerful_o i_o hope_v that_o god_n may_v have_v some_o honour_n by_o my_o hear_v this_o day_n &_o god_n know_v that_o this_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o i_o aim_v at_o i_o do_v not_o come_v for_o company_n nor_o to_o be_v see_v of_o man_n neither_o do_v i_o come_v mere_o to_o satisfy_v my_o own_o conscience_n other_o go_v and_o hear_v such_o truth_n of_o god_n as_o a_o heart_n that_o have_v not_o malice_n in_o it_o a_o heart_n that_o do_v desire_n to_o empty_v itself_o of_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v against_o the_o word_n and_o which_o be_v not_o suitable_a to_o the_o spiritualnesse_n of_o the_o word_n a_o heart_n i_o say_v that_o entertain_v nothing_o in_o it_o that_o any_o way_n make_v against_o the_o word_n a_o good_a heart_n be_v a_o heart_n which_o excrement_n be_v and_o superfluity_n of_o naughtiness_n by_o that_o i_o take_v be_v mean_v as_o if_o the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v say_v do_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o for_o to_o purge_v away_o filthiness_n that_o be_v notorious_a stink_a evil_n abominable_a sin_n that_o you_o do_v not_o come_v with_o such_o filthy_a vile_a heart_n but_o whatsoever_o there_o be_v in_o your_o heart_n that_o be_v any_o way_n against_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n it_o be_v a_o superfluity_n of_o naughtiness_n all_o kind_n of_o evil_a thought_n and_o evil_a affection_n that_o be_v more_o than_o needs_o look_v into_o your_o heart_n and_o affection_n and_o see_v whatsoever_o you_o find_v there_o that_o be_v more_o than_o ought_v to_o be_v run_v out_o unto_o any_o thing_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o labour_v to_o purge_v out_o that_o say_v he_o do_v not_o satisfy_v yourselves_o in_o any_o kind_n of_o evil_n whatsoever_o it_o may_v be_v you_o be_v cleanse_v from_o the_o notorious_a evil_n of_o the_o with_o joy_n and_o yet_o they_o have_v not_o this_o honest_a heart_n yea_o they_o may_v hear_v the_o word_n so_o as_o to_o bring_v forth_o a_o blade_n and_o yet_o not_o have_v this_o honest_a heart_n by_o this_o honest_a heart_n i_o take_v therefore_o to_o be_v mean_v this_o a_o heart_n that_o deal_v square_o and_o true_o with_o god_n behave_v itself_o in_o a_o beseem_a manner_n suitable_a to_o that_o authority_n and_o excellency_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o now_o for_o example_n 1_o first_o among_o man_n he_o be_v account_v a_o honest_a man_n that_o deal_v square_o and_o true_o with_o man_n in_o all_o action_n such_o a_o man_n you_o will_v say_v be_v a_o honest_a man_n as_o honest_a a_o man_n as_o ever_o break_v bread_n that_o be_v one_o that_o will_v deal_v square_o with_o man_n not_o only_o in_o one_o thing_n but_o turn_v he_o to_o any_o thing_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v a_o proportion_n between_o one_o action_n and_o another_o so_o this_o be_v a_o honest_a heart_n not_o one_o that_o only_o will_v be_v forward_o for_o god_n in_o some_o one_o action_n wherein_o he_o may_v enjoy_v himself_o as_o well_o as_o god_n but_o one_o that_o deal_v square_o with_o god_n let_v god_n put_v he_o upon_o duty_n upon_o any_o service_n god_n shall_v find_v he_o still_o to_o be_v the_o same_o man_n put_v he_o upon_o a_o easy_a service_n as_o many_o will_v embrace_v that_o or_o put_v he_o upon_o a_o difficult_a service_n it_o be_v all_o one_o if_o it_o be_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n you_o shall_v find_v he_o square_v in_o every_o thing_n though_o second_o a_o honest_a man_n be_v one_o that_o provide_v thing_n honest_a before_o man_n that_o do_v all_o thing_n in_o a_o seemly_a way_n in_o all_o those_o relation_n that_o he_o have_v unto_o other_o that_o we_o account_v honesty_n so_o when_o a_o man_n behaviour_n towards_o the_o word_n be_v such_o as_o do_v beseem_v the_o word_n of_o that_o god_n with_o who_o he_o have_v to_o deal_v that_o look_v what_o excellency_n what_o glory_n there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n such_o a_o suitable_a behaviour_n there_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n to_o it_o this_o be_v a_o honest_a heart_n so_o that_o there_o be_v those_o two_o thing_n when_o a_o man_n be_v square_a with_o god_n in_o one_o thing_n as_o well_o as_o another_o and_o when_o there_o be_v a_o suitableness_n in_o the_o behaviour_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o what_o excellency_n there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n when_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n will_v not_o abuse_v the_o word_n at_o all_o but_o behave_v its_o self_n honest_o according_a unto_o the_o gravity_n holiness_n and_o weight_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n and_o thus_o now_o with_o such_o a_o good_a and_o honest_a heart_n we_o be_v to_o receive_v the_o word_n if_o we_o will_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o it_o 10_o a_o ten_o particular_a be_v this_o if_o we_o will_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o the_o word_n we_o must_v hide_v the_o word_n in_o our_o heart_n we_o must_v not_o only_a heart_n the_o word_n but_o keep_v it_o preserve_v it_o and_o then_o do_v we_o declare_v that_o we_o account_v the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o be_v worth_a something_o indeed_o for_o what_o be_v it_o to_o sanctify_v god_n as_o we_o have_v open_v before_o in_o the_o general_a but_o such_o a_o behaviour_n towards_o he_o as_o may_v testify_v the_o excellency_n of_o the_o name_n of_o god_n so_o the_o behaviour_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n must_v be_v such_o as_o may_v give_v a_o testimony_n to_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o word_n and_o manifest_v the_o high_a esteem_n i_o have_v of_o it_o now_o if_o i_o receive_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v of_o great_a value_n if_o i_o slight_a it_o and_o let_v any_o body_n take_v it_o from_o i_o i_o do_v not_o give_v a_o testimony_n to_o the_o excellency_n of_o that_o thing_n but_o if_o i_o take_v it_o and_o lock_v it_o up_o and_o so_o keep_v it_o under_o lock_n and_o key_n i_o do_v thereby_o give_v a_o testimony_n of_o the_o esteem_n that_o i_o have_v of_o the_o excellency_n of_o that_o thing_n so_o now_o when_o i_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o meet_v with_o truth_n that_o have_v get_v into_o my_o soul_n i_o close_o with_o they_o and_o be_o resolve_v within_o my_o heart_n as_o i_o be_o hear_v of_o they_o well_o this_o truth_n i_o will_v keep_v through_o enjoyment_n of_o christ_n there_o be_v a_o fullness_n for_o the_o satisfy_n of_o my_o soul_n that_o i_o have_v have_v of_o christ_n sometime_o in_o the_o word_n and_o sometime_o in_o prayer_n that_o have_v be_v sweet_a unto_o i_o but_o i_o expect_v a_o further_a communion_n of_o christ_n here_o for_o this_o be_v the_o grand_a ordinance_n for_o communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n in_o deed_n the_o word_n in_o this_o respect_n it_o be_v beyond_o this_o ordinance_n that_o be_v it_o be_v not_o only_o for_o the_o increase_n of_o grace_n but_o for_o the_o beget_n this_o be_v only_o for_o the_o increase_n of_o grace_n and_o not_o appoint_v for_o the_o beget_n now_o in_o that_o respect_n the_o word_n be_v above_o the_o sacrament_n but_o now_o this_o sacrament_n be_v a_o more_o full_a ordinance_n for_o communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n this_o be_v the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o of_o his_o blood_n and_o therefore_o there_o ought_v to_o be_v hunger_a and_o thirst_a desire_n of_o the_o soul_n after_o jesus_n christ_n therefore_o you_o must_v take_v heed_n you_o do_v not_o come_v with_o your_o stomach_n full_a of_o trash_n as_o child_n when_o they_o can_v get_v plum_n and_o pear_n and_o fill_v their_o stomach_n with_o they_o when_o they_o come_v to_o your_o table_n though_o there_o be_v never_o so_o much_o wholesome_a diet_n they_o have_v no_o mind_n at_o all_o to_o it_o so_o it_o be_v with_o man_n of_o the_o world_n they_o fill_v their_o heart_n with_o the_o trash_n of_o this_o world_n and_o with_o sensual_a delight_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o when_o they_o come_v to_o such_o a_o great_a ordinance_n to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n that_o then_o they_o feel_v no_o want_n at_o all_o of_o christ_n only_o they_o come_v and_o take_v a_o little_a piece_n of_o bread_n and_o a_o draught_n of_o wine_n but_o for_o any_o strong_a pause_v desire_n to_o meet_v with_o jesus_n christ_n there_o in_o the_o ordinance_n to_o come_v so_o as_o they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o live_v without_o christ_n even_o as_o a_o man_n that_o be_v a_o hunger_v
i_o be_o go_v to_o god_n for_o to_o set_v a_o due_a prior_n upon_o those_o mercy_n that_o i_o be_o pray_v for_o and_o to_o get_v my_o heart_n affect_v with_o they_o three_o labour_v to_o get_v your_o heart_n separate_v from_o the_o world_n and_o from_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v here_o below_o in_o the_o world_n and_o that_o shall_v have_v be_v a_o three_o thing_n in_o the_o course_n of_o your_o life_n you_o shall_v never_o let_v out_o you_o heart_n to_o any_o creature_n either_o to_o business_n or_o pleasure_n in_o the_o world_n so_o but_o that_o you_o may_v have_v command_n of_o your_o heart_n to_o call_v they_o when_o you_o will_v to_o call_v they_o in_o to_o god_n in_o prayer_n and_o then_o when_o you_o come_v to_o prayer_n there_o shall_v be_v a_o actual_a separation_n of_o your_o heart_n from_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n dedicate_a yourselves_o to_o god_n for_o this_o time_n as_o one_o that_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o the_o world_n nothing_o to_o do_v with_o any_o thing_n but_o this_o duty_n that_o now_o you_o be_v about_o this_o be_v the_o preparation_n of_o your_o heart_n to_o prayer_n in_o the_o course_n of_o your_o life_n now_o then_o for_o the_o prayer_n its_o self_n first_o we_o must_v consider_v of_o the_o matter_n of_o prayer_n and_o second_o of_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o first_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o we_o must_v look_v to_o than_o it_o seem_v that_o the_o main_a matter_n of_o your_o prayer_n be_v only_o for_o yourselves_o but_o how_o have_v the_o matter_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o great_a god_n and_o the_o good_a of_o the_o church_n take_v your_o heart_n all_o this_o while_n how_o have_v your_o heart_n be_v affect_v with_o this_o that_o the_o name_n of_o god_n have_v be_v so_o little_o sanctify_v in_o the_o world_n and_o that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n have_v not_o come_v and_o that_o the_o will_n of_o god_n have_v not_o be_v do_v have_v these_o thing_n take_v up_o your_o heart_n in_o prayer_n the_o matter_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o the_o good_a of_o the_o church_n though_o yourselves_o have_v not_o any_o particular_a interest_n in_o they_o if_o these_o thing_n do_v but_o take_v up_o your_o heart_n in_o prayer_n then_o when_o you_o be_v at_o sea_n you_o will_v remember_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o church_n as_o much_o as_o yourselves_o the_o church_n be_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o then_o restore_v i_o to_o the_o health_n of_o my_o body_n or_o the_o health_n of_o my_o husband_n or_o the_o health_n of_o my_o wife_n but_o thou_o may_v pray_v lord_n convert_v the_o soul_n of_o my_o husband_n or_o the_o soul_n of_o my_o wife_n without_o any_o condition_n at_o all_o when_o your_o estate_n at_o sea_n be_v in_o danger_n when_o you_o pray_v for_o they_o you_o must_v make_v mercy_n or_o otherwise_o let_v i_o rather_o be_v without_o it_o let_v i_o have_v a_o sanctify_a use_n of_o my_o sickness_n or_o otherwise_o let_v my_o sickness_n be_v continue_v to_o i_o thus_o now_o you_o may_v pray_v for_o continue_v in_o sickness_n or_o thus_o conditional_o lord_n if_o thou_o see_v that_o my_o heart_n be_v so_o vile_a and_o wretched_a that_o i_o will_v abuse_v through_o my_o corruption_n such_o and_o such_o mercy_n lord_n rather_o take_v they_o from_o i_o and_o let_v i_o be_v without_o they_o if_o thou_o see_v that_o there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o break_v this_o proud_a heart_n of_o i_o but_o such_o a_o way_n lord_n let_v that_o be_v thy_o way_n to_o break_v it_o if_o thou_o see_v it_o according_a to_o thy_o will_n as_o the_o fit_a way_n then_o comparative_o thus_o lord_n rather_o let_v i_o have_v any_o affliction_n than_o sin_n rather_o let_v i_o suffer_v loss_n of_o my_o estate_n then_o sin_n against_o thou_o then_o depart_v from_o thou_o any_o thing_n lord_n rather_o than_o sin_n thus_o you_o may_v pray_v for_o affliction_n but_o not_o absolute_o you_o must_v not_o pray_v that_o god_n will_v send_v you_o affliction_n absolute_o for_o you_o do_v not_o know_v your_o heart_n it_o may_v be_v if_o affliction_n shall_v come_v your_o heart_n may_v be_v as_o stubborn_a under_o your_o affliction_n as_o they_o be_v now_o for_o affliction_n have_v no_o power_n in_o itself_o to_o do_v we_o any_o good_a and_o then_o for_o the_o good_a of_o other_o for_o christ_n teach_v we_o to_o pray_v our_o father_n there_o come_v in_o here_o a_o rebuke_n of_o the_o wicked_a practice_n of_o divers_a in_o curse_v and_o then_o a_o question_n
that_o if_o god_n shall_v speak_v to_o they_o as_o he_o speak_v unto_o solomon_n and_o bid_v he_o ask_v what_o he_o shall_v give_v he_o i_o very_o believe_v there_o be_v many_o in_o this_o congregation_n that_o have_v already_o good_a assurance_n of_o god_n love_n in_o christ_n if_o they_o have_v not_o that_o that_o will_v be_v the_o main_a thing_n that_o they_o will_v ask_v but_o have_v attain_v that_o if_o god_n will_v speak_v from_o heaven_n and_o say_v what_o shall_v i_o give_v you_o for_o yourselves_o if_o he_o shall_v ask_v you_o in_o the_o general_n it_o may_v be_v you_o will_v ask_v something_o for_o the_o church_n but_o if_o it_o be_v for_o yourselves_o you_o will_v put_v up_o this_o petition_n oh_o lord_n that_o i_o may_v be_v deliver_v from_o a_o wander_a spirit_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o especial_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n that_o i_o may_v thereby_o come_v to_o enjoy_v more_o holy_a communion_n with_o thyself_o then_o ever_o yet_o i_o enjoy_v and_o they_o will_v account_v this_o to_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n than_o if_o god_n shall_v give_v they_o to_o be_v king_n or_o queen_n over_o the_o whole_a world_n if_o god_n shall_v put_v these_o two_o into_o the_o balance_n either_o the_o whole_a world_n to_o possess_v or_o otherwise_o to_o have_v more_o free_a heart_n in_o come_v to_o god_n in_o prayer_n and_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o that_o that_o have_v so_o much_o hinder_v their_o communion_n with_o god_n in_o prayer_n they_o will_v despise_v and_o scorn_v the_o world_n in_o comparison_n of_o such_o a_o mercy_n as_o this_o be_v howsoever_o carnal_a heart_n they_o think_v little_a of_o it_o but_o those_o that_o be_v the_o servant_n of_o god_n they_o find_v it_o to_o be_v very_o grievous_a to_o they_o but_o be_v the_o time_n be_v past_a i_o shall_v reserve_v that_o to_o speak_v yet_o a_o little_a more_o large_o for_o the_o help_n of_o those_o that_o be_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o it_o i_o will_v only_o speak_v one_o thing_n further_o now_o and_o that_o shall_v be_v to_o those_o that_o be_v wicked_a and_o vile_a that_o not_o only_o have_v vain_a wander_a thought_n in_o prayer_n but_o even_o in_o the_o very_a duty_n of_o prayer_n many_o time_n have_v wicked_a and_o ungodly_a thought_n how_o horrible_a be_v they_o unclean_a thought_n murderous_a thought_n it_o may_v be_v and_o most_o abominable_a i_o confess_v even_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a may_v sometime_o have_v some_o blasphemous_a thought_n cast_v into_o they_o for_o the_o devil_n be_v never_o more_o busy_a then_o at_o the_o time_n of_o prayer_n but_o they_o rather_o come_v from_o the_o devil_n then_o from_o the_o stream_n and_o corruption_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n which_o may_v be_v we_o may_v make_v out_o more_o clear_o afterward_o but_o now_o i_o speak_v to_o such_o as_o have_v most_o wicked_a abominable_a thought_n rise_v from_o the_o stream_n and_o corruption_n of_o their_o heart_n such_o thought_n as_o their_o heart_n do_v close_o withal_o in_o prayer_n and_o they_o can_v roll_n those_o thought_n about_o in_o their_o mind_n as_o a_o child_n will_v roll_n a_o piece_n of_o sugar_n in_o its_o mouth_n and_o this_o be_v the_o wickedness_n of_o many_o man_n and_o woman_n heart_n take_v but_o this_o one_o note_n with_o you_o that_o all_o those_o dreadful_a vile_a unclean_a covetous_a thought_n of_o thou_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n do_v converse_v with_o god_n in_o thought_n as_o well_o as_o man_n do_v converse_v with_o man_n in_o word_n and_o what_o a_o woeful_a guiltiness_n will_v have_v be_v upon_o you_o have_v you_o speak_v such_o vile_a and_o wicked_a thing_n to_o man_n as_o some_o time_n have_v be_v in_o your_o mind_n even_o when_o you_o have_v be_v pray_v to_o god_n how_o will_v the_o company_n have_v even_o spit_v in_o your_o face_n and_o kick_v you_o from_o they_o none_o that_o have_v any_o face_n of_o godliness_n will_v have_v endure_v you_o in_o their_o company_n and_o yet_o here_o be_v the_o evil_a of_o it_o your_o heart_n be_v not_o trouble_v but_o you_o rise_v off_o your_o knee_n and_o away_o you_o go_v thou_o have_v a_o cauterize_a conscience_n a_o sear_a conscience_n that_o can_v entertain_v such_o vile_a thought_n at_o any_o time_n without_o have_v thy_o spirit_n afflict_v and_o go_v away_o with_o shame_n and_o confusion_n as_o if_o the_o great_a evil_n have_v prayer_n be_v take_v away_o as_o wine_n and_o beer_n that_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o they_o go_v so_o the_o life_n and_o spirit_n of_o our_o duty_n be_v go_v by_o our_o vain_a thought_n and_o be_v blow_v they_o up_o to_o a_o great_a heat_n and_o be_v bring_v of_o they_o to_o a_o flame_n upon_o this_o motion_n that_o be_v in_o thy_o heart_n and_o the_o stir_v to_o kindle_v those_o spark_n further_o in_o thy_o heart_n it_o be_v that_o the_o ash_n of_o thy_o corruption_n do_v as_o it_o be_v fly_v about_o thy_o ear_n and_o that_o there_o be_v such_o stir_n of_o corruption_n more_o than_o there_o be_v before_o it_o be_v not_o because_o there_o be_v more_o corruption_n than_o there_o be_v former_o but_o before_o there_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o corruption_n it_o lay_v still_o and_o now_o because_o there_o be_v something_o else_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o corruption_n do_v so_o stir_v and_o beside_o you_o know_v a_o man_n that_o be_v wont_a to_o keep_v lewd_a company_n if_o knockin_n at_o his_o door_n and_o labour_v to_o get_v he_o to_o they_o again_o so_o it_o be_v here_o when_o the_o soul_n vanity_n and_o lust_n be_v as_o friend_n together_o there_o be_v no_o disturbance_n and_o take_v notice_n of_o any_o thing_n then_o but_o now_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v cast_v out_o those_o sinful_a distemper_n and_o will_v have_v no_o more_o of_o they_o they_o for_o the_o present_n will_v be_v more_o importunate_a active_a and_o stir_v than_o they_o be_v before_o and_o beside_o the_o lord_n do_v this_o to_o humble_v thy_o heart_n the_o more_o that_o thereby_o thou_o may_v come_v to_o see_v the_o great_a corruption_n that_o be_v in_o thy_o soul_n before_o the_o work_n of_o thy_o corruption_n will_v discover_v much_o evil_n in_o thy_o heart_n that_o thou_o stir_v they_o can_v believe_v what_o abundance_n of_o wickedness_n there_o be_v in_o their_o heart_n if_o god_n shall_v open_v the_o wickedness_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n natural_o and_o so_o all_o unregenerate_a man_n they_o will_v think_v you_o speak_v strange_a riddle_n whereas_o they_o bless_v themselves_o they_o bless_v god_n they_o know_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o their_o heart_n not_o yes_n there_o be_v such_o thing_n only_o they_o be_v not_o stir_v but_o they_o lie_v quiet_a as_o mud_n in_o the_o bottom_n of_o a_o pond_n there_o it_o be_v yet_o you_o can_v see_v it_o till_o it_o be_v stir_v at_o first_o conversion_n i_o say_v the_o lord_n suffer_v thy_o corruption_n thus_o to_o stir_v that_o he_o may_v discover_v to_o thou_o what_o a_o evil_a heart_n thou_o have_v what_o abundance_n of_o sin_n there_o be_v in_o thy_o heart_n and_o therefore_o your_o young_a convert_n they_o look_v upon_o themselves_o more_o loathsome_a and_o vile_a then_o ever_o work_n of_o prayer_n a_o great_a work_n if_o thou_o do_v it_o will_v help_v thou_o much_o against_o the_o vanity_n of_o thy_o thought_n second_o every_o time_n thou_o go_v to_o prayer_n thou_o that_o be_v most_o trouble_v with_o such_o vain_a thought_n renew_v thy_o resolution_n against_o they_o i_o have_v be_v trouble_v with_o vain_a thought_n heretofore_o and_o be_o afraid_a if_o i_o look_v not_o to_o it_o that_o i_o shall_v lose_v this_o prayer_n also_o and_o therefore_o o_o lord_n here_o i_o renew_v my_o resolution_n to_o set_v against_o they_o in_o this_o prayer_n with_o all_o my_o salvation_n and_o yet_o for_o the_o most_o part_n there_o be_v scarce_o any_o thing_n that_o people_n have_v to_o rest_v upon_o or_o to_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n for_o acceptation_n to_o eternal_a life_n but_o only_o their_o prayer_n and_o their_o come_n to_o hear_v and_o receive_v of_o the_o communion_n and_o such_o duty_n that_o they_o perform_v this_o be_v all_o they_o have_v to_o tender_v up_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n perhaps_o they_o may_v sometime_o speak_v of_o christ_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v that_o which_o their_o heart_n rest_v upon_o for_o acceptation_n to_o eternal_a life_n be_v this_o and_o be_v it_o but_o this_o it_o be_v a_o weak_a prop_n a_o rot_a reed_n that_o thou_o have_v to_o rest_v upon_o let_v the_o duty_n of_o worship_n be_v perform_v never_o so_o well_o suppose_v we_o do_v sanctify_v god_n name_n to_o the_o uttermost_a that_o be_v possible_a for_o any_o creature_n to_o do_v in_o this_o world_n yet_o such_o duty_n be_v not_o to_o be_v rest_v upon_o abraham_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n and_o the_o apostle_n the_o most_o holy_a man_n that_o ever_o do_v perform_v duty_n in_o the_o most_o holy_a manner_n yet_o woe_n to_o they_o if_o they_o we_o begin_v to_o be_v religious_a and_o godly_a now_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o busy_a work_n to_o be_v a_o religious_a and_o a_o godly_a man_n because_o there_o be_v so_o much_o require_v in_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n many_o people_n think_v it_o a_o very_a easy_a matter_n to_o worship_n god_n and_o the_o worship_n that_o they_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n be_v a_o easy_a matter_n there_o be_v little_a in_o it_o if_o it_o be_v nothing_o else_o to_o worship_n god_n but_o mere_o to_o go_v and_o say_v a_o few_o prayer_n and_o come_v and_o hear_v a_o sermon_n and_o take_v a_o piece_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n than_o it_o be_v the_o easy_a matter_n in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v and_o worship_n god_n but_o there_o be_v more_o require_v in_o the_o duty_n of_o
