to_o exercise_v thou_o in_o prayer_n and_o in_o thy_o christian_a warfare_n be_v it_o not_o for_o this_o we_o will_v not_o so_o often_o and_o so_o full_o feel_v the_o necessity_n and_o sweetness_n of_o christ_n suffering_n intercession_n and_o righteousness_n we_o will_v not_o make_v so_o much_o of_o the_o sanctify_a subdue_a power_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n nor_o have_v so_o oft_o recourse_n unto_o it_o where_o will_v be_v the_o exercise_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o patience_n about_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o sanctification_n what_o will_v stir_v we_o up_o to_o hate_v those_o who_o be_v profain_o and_o wicked_a although_o they_o have_v other_o recommend_v and_o insinuate_a part_n as_o on_o the_o contrary_a thou_o love_v those_o who_o be_v good_a and_o holy_a thankfulness_n and_o to_o miss_v some_o thing_n that_o we_o may_v be_v exercise_v in_o prayer_n pray_v then_o that_o the_o lord_n more_o and_o more_o will_v make_v thou_o partaker_n of_o his_o divine_a nature_n and_o of_o his_o holiness_n that_o so_o the_o hatred_n of_o sin_n may_v grow_v more_o and_o more_o sensible_a in_o you_o for_o he_o be_v of_o pure_a eye_n than_o that_o he_o can_v be_v to_o he_o as_o to_o our_o last_o end_n in_o be_v about_o the_o point_n of_o his_o worship_n in_o obey_v his_o acceptable_a will_n in_o glorify_v his_o name_n advance_v his_o kingdom_n see_v to_o the_o do_v of_o his_o will_n by_o other_o so_o far_o as_o opportunity_n and_o our_o calling_n permit_v sometime_o towards_o ourselves_o in_o that_o great_a work_n of_o our_o salvation_n sometime_o towards_o our_o neighbour_n in_o the_o work_n of_o charity_n yea_o of_o spiritual_a charity_n so_o necessary_a and_o so_o often_o recommend_v exhort_v instruct_v edify_v comfort_n admonish_v one_o another_o and_o yet_o neglect_v much_o want_n of_o compassion_n to_o the_o poor_a soul_n so_o their_o faith_n be_v ever_o work_v which_o clear_o cut_v off_o those_o who_o please_v themselves_o that_o they_o abstain_v from_o ill_a yea_o from_o some_o few_o gross_a ill_n that_o they_o be_v no_o thief_n murderer_n adulterer_n etc._n etc._n although_o they_o never_o do_v a_o good_a deed_n not_o the_o remedy_n as_o he_o suppose_v he_o fear_v exceed_o and_o be_v put_v to_o that_o what_o shall_v i_o do_v to_o be_v save_v so_o that_o the_o main_a thing_n indeed_o that_o trouble_v he_o be_v the_o same_o with_o the_o first_o to_o wit_n fear_v of_o guiltiness_n and_o punishment_n though_o the_o thing_n most_o sensible_a to_o he_o be_v sense_n of_o want_n for_o his_o want_n will_v not_o trouble_v he_o but_o for_o this_o nor_o will_v he_o take_v they_o to_o heart_n but_o for_o this_o to_o wit_n because_o find_v by_o his_o want_n that_o he_o be_v not_o in_o the_o estate_n of_o grace_n as_o he_o suppose_v he_o find_v himself_o at_o least_o fear_n himself_o to_o be_v under_o the_o estate_n of_o guiltiness_n and_o misery_n and_o this_o be_v it_o that_o trouble_v he_o to_o bring_v the_o point_n then_o near_o unto_o you_o this_o your_o case_n be_v a_o very_a ordinary_a deal_n of_o the_o lord_n with_o many_o of_o his_o own_o child_n to_o wit_n to_o begin_v the_o work_n of_o they_o waken_n and_o humiliation_n with_o the_o sense_n of_o want_n more_o than_o with_o the_o sense_n of_o guiltiness_n i_o say_v more_o direct_o with_o the_o one_o then_o with_o the_o other_o for_o the_o one_o as_o the_o two_o be_v include_v in_o the_o other_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o his_o deal_n seem_v to_o be_v this_o the_o lord_n be_v wise_a and_o see_v what_o be_v the_o main_a ground_n of_o man_n security_n and_o sleep_v in_o sin_n without_o humiliation_n and_o whence_o it_o ariâ—es_v even_o from_o this_o to_o wit_n their_o presumption_n they_o think_v they_o be_v in_o christ_n and_o so_o leap_v oâ—er_o all_o that_o the_o law_n can_v say_v to_o they_o or_o threaten_v they_o with_o which_o otherways_o shall_v be_v the_o mean_a of_o their_o waken_n and_o then_o the_o lord_n wise_o fit_v the_o remedy_n to_o this_o malady_n discover_v their_o want_n unto_o they_o and_o by_o they_o their_o presumption_n let_v they_o see_v that_o they_o be_v not_o what_o they_o think_v they_o be_v put_v they_o out_o of_o this_o their_o start_a hole_n and_o send_v they_o back_o again_o to_o the_o school_n of_o the_o law_n even_o to_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o same_o and_o so_o work_v the_o work_n of_o humiliation_n in_o they_o now_o observe_v that_o although_o the_o direct_a and_o immediate_a work_n be_v the_o sense_n of_o their_o want_n yet_o this_o sense_n of_o want_n be_v not_o without_o the_o sense_n of_o guiltiness_n for_o otherways_o why_o will_v the_o sense_n of_o thy_o want_n trouble_v thou_o but_o only_o because_o of_o this_o thou_o see_v that_o by_o reason_n of_o thy_o sin_n thou_o be_v guilty_a and_o under_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n thou_o know_v that_o there_o be_v no_o remedy_n but_o by_o christ_n thou_o do_v sometime_o think_v thou_o have_v interest_n in_o he_o but_o now_o by_o thy_o want_n thou_o do_v think_v thyself_o deceive_v and_o hence_o iâ—_n thy_o trouble_n and_o humiliation_n so_o if_o thou_o will_v mark_v well_o the_o ground_n of_o all_o thy_o trouble_n and_o humiliation_n and_o that_o whereupon_o it_o reflect_v be_v from_o the_o sight_n and_o fear_n of_o thy_o own_o guiltiness_n so_o that_o the_o sense_n of_o thy_o want_n be_v not_o without_o the_o sense_n of_o guiltiness_n for_o be_v it_o otherways_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o trouble_v with_o the_o fear_n of_o thy_o guiltiness_n the_o sight_n of_o thy_o want_n will_v not_o trouble_v thou_o nor_o will_v thou_o take_v they_o to_o heart_n as_o the_o case_n of_o the_o most_o part_n be_v who_o be_v deep_o fleep_v in_o security_n they_o be_v never_o affect_v with_o this_o sort_n of_o doctrine_n touch_v the_o mark_n and_o evidence_n of_o grace_n they_o regard_v not_o whether_o they_o find_v or_o miss_v have_v or_o want_v this_o indeed_o be_v a_o token_n of_o deep_a security_n of_o utter_a want_n of_o humiliation_n and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o sense_n of_o guiltiness_n at_o all_o but_o when_o thou_o not_o only_o see_v but_o do_v take_v to_o heart_n thy_o want_n be_v great_o affect_v with_o this_o sort_n of_o doctrine_n concern_v the_o mark_n and_o evidence_n of_o grace_n nothing_o fear_v and_o grieve_v thou_o more_o than_o to_o miss_v nothing_o in_o the_o world_n rejoice_v thou_o more_o than_o to_o find_v here_o be_v certain_o some_o freedom_n from_o security_n some_o sight_n and_o sense_n of_o guiltiness_n and_o in_o a_o word_n a_o happy_a waken_n at_o least_o the_o case_n stand_v thus_o what_o shall_v i_o do_v to_o be_v save_v so_o to_o thou_o now_o to_o such_o who_o acknowledge_v their_o sight_n of_o corruption_n and_o want_n and_o their_o be_v affect_v in_o some_o measure_n therewith_o which_o be_v call_v the_o sense_n of_o want_n but_o can_v find_v in_o themselves_o the_o sense_n of_o guiltiness_n and_o so_o can_v think_v that_o they_o be_v true_o humble_v i_o will_v say_v three_o thing_n to_o they_o lay_v aside_o the_o comfort_n whereof_o i_o speak_v in_o the_o beginning_n to_o wit_n that_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o sight_n and_o take_v to_o heart_n their_o corruption_n they_o have_v interest_n in_o that_o the_o whole_a need_v not_o the_o physician_n but_o they_o that_o be_v sick_a in_o regard_n of_o their_o see_v their_o want_n their_o interest_n in_o that_o biessed_a be_v the_o poor_a in_o spirit_n they_o be_v in_o some_o better_a case_n and_o further_o advance_v than_o these_o of_o laâ—dicea_n for_o they_o acknowledge_v that_o they_o be_v poor_a miserable_a wretched_a but_o lay_v aside_o these_o which_o thou_o ought_v to_o prize_n and_o be_v thankful_a for_o i_o say_v i_o have_v these_o three_o thing_n to_o say_v unto_o thou_o for_o thy_o comfort_n in_o this_o point_n 1._o thou_o have_v the_o sense_n of_o thy_o want_n and_o under_o it_o of_o thy_o guiltiness_n although_o thou_o can_v see_v it_o as_o i_o have_v be_v show_v unto_o thou_o so_o that_o as_o thy_o be_v adact_v with_o thy_o want_n cieer_o evidence_n then_o be_v waken_v out_o of_o thy_o security_n thou_o be_v solicitous_a for_o thy_o salvation_n work_v it_o out_o with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a and_o be_v come_v to_o this_o what_o shall_v i_o do_v to_o be_v save_v and_o consequent_o be_v in_o that_o same_o case_n of_o humiliation_n as_o be_v the_o jailor_n and_o those_o that_o be_v convert_v at_o peter_n preach_v act._n 2.2_o have_v thou_o not_o that_o tender_a conscience_n before_o speak_v of_o warn_v thou_o before_o sin_n check_v thou_o after_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n of_o the_o very_a lest_o sin_n least_o omission_n or_o fail_v in_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v then_o a_o tender_a conscience_n be_v awaken_v and_o at_o some_o time_n and_o in_o some_o measure_n a_o wound_a conscience_n thou_o have_v one_o of_o the_o main_a end_n wherefore_o the_o lord_n work_v humiliation_n in_o his_o own_o and_o consequent_o have_v have_v humiliation_n itself_o thou_o have_v thy_o interest_n in_o that_o bless_a be_v the_o man_n that_o fear_v always_o behold_v what_o fear_n what_o care_n etc._n etc._n 3._o tell_v i_o what_o it_o be_v that_o make_v thou_o that_o thou_o dare_v not_o commit_v the_o most_o secret_a and_o small_a sin_n nor_o omit_v the_o most_o secret_a duty_n what_o be_v it_o that_o put_v thou_o on_o and_o hold_v thou_o in_o such_o a_o constant_a course_n of_o obedience_n if_o it_o be_v not_o at_o least_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n and_o fear_n now_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n be_v the_o very_a spirit_n of_o humiliation_n when_o thou_o dare_v not_o entertain_v a_o sinful_a thought_n dare_v not_o omit_v thy_o time_n or_o dyatt_n of_o devotion_n make_v conscience_n of_o every_o know_a sin_n of_o every_o know_a duty_n possible_o more_o than_o many_o other_o who_o have_v go_v far_o on_o in_o the_o course_n of_o christianity_n yea_o and_o perhaps_o then_o sometime_o thyself_o afterward_o will_n what_o be_v it_o that_o hold_v thou_o so_o wake_v but_o even_o thy_o waken_a conscience_n the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n at_o least_o the_o spirit_n of_o fear_n the_o fear_n of_o god_n put_v in_o thy_o heart_n a_o point_n and_o part_n of_o the_o covenant_n which_o be_v the_o very_a work_n of_o humiliation_n wrought_v in_o thy_o soul_n if_o it_o be_v any_o other_o thing_n that_o stir_v thou_o up_o as_o the_o love_n of_o god_n it_o be_v well_o thou_o be_v further_o advance_v in_o grace_n but_o at_o least_o thou_o can_v deny_v that_o the_o work_n of_o
humiliation_n be_v wrought_v in_o thy_o soul_n and_o therefore_o thank_v god_n for_o this_o and_o go_v forward_o to_o perfection_n get_v faith_n and_o love_n which_o cast_v out_o fear_n the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n instead_o of_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n goon_n then_o to_o believe_v for_o thou_o both_o master_n &_o shall_v have_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n thus_o in_o thy_o heart_n and_o be_v in_o a_o constant_a course_n of_o obedience_n according_a to_o thy_o ability_n that_o faith_n be_v never_o boldness_n nor_o presumption_n that_o be_v join_v with_o fear_n and_o obedience_n and_o that_o keep_v to_o the_o precept_n as_o well_o as_o to_o the_o promise_n it_o be_v a_o ordinary_a policy_n of_o satan_n and_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v ignorant_a of_o his_o wile_n but_o observe_v his_o stratagem_n that_o those_o who_o have_v no_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n as_o be_v void_a both_o of_o fear_n and_o obedience_n these_o i_o say_v he_o puff_v up_o with_o presumption_n and_o make_v they_o bold_o to_o claim_v and_o lean_a to_o that_o wherein_o they_o have_v no_o right_n as_o long_o as_o a_o man_n make_v no_o conscience_n of_o his_o way_n he_o let_v he_o believe_v his_o fill_n such_o a_o belief_n as_o it_o be_v when_o indeed_o he_o shall_v not_o lay_v hold_n nor_o claim_v to_o the_o promise_n as_o be_v clear_a by_o that_o psal_n 50.16_o 17._o but_o unto_o the_o wicked_a god_n say_v what_o have_v thou_o to_o do_v to_o take_v my_o covenant_n in_o thy_o mouth_n see_v thou_o hate_v instruction_n and_o cast_v my_o word_n behind_o thou_o when_o a_o man_n again_o have_v forsake_v his_o wicked_a way_n and_o thought_n make_v conscience_n of_o his_o course_n and_o begin_v to_o fear_v the_o lord_n at_o which_o time_n he_o may_v &_o shall_v lay_v hold_n on_o the_o promise_n as_o be_v clear_a by_o that_o remarkable_a and_o comfortable_a place_n isa_n 50.10_o who_o be_v among_o you_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n that_o obey_v the_o voice_n of_o his_o servant_n that_o walk_v in_o darkness_n and_o have_v no_o light_n let_v he_o trust_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o stay_v upon_o his_o god_n here_o be_v a_o clear_a warrant_n and_o a_o sweet_a invitation_n for_o a_o person_n in_o such_o a_o case_n to_o believe_v and_o lay_v hold_v and_o yet_o i_o say_v no_o soon_o fare_v it_o thus_o with_o a_o man_n but_o satan_n and_o his_o own_o corruption_n incontinent_o bear_v he_o back_o from_o believe_v observe_v this_o then_o and_o resist_v the_o devil_n and_o the_o corruption_n of_o infidelity_n that_o be_v in_o thy_o own_o heart_n &_o bear_v back_o no_o long_o if_o bear_v back_o and_o withdraw_a be_v a_o allowable_a cause_n for_o thou_o in_o such_o a_o course_n thy_o heart_n will_v not_o be_v so_o much_o give_v unto_o it_o we_o be_v ever_o to_o suspect_v the_o way_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o to_o judge_v it_o wrong_n that_o we_o be_v most_o give_v unto_o namely_o the_o point_n in_o hand_n infidelity_n be_v so_o sibbe_v to_o we_o and_o which_o hang_v so_o fast_o on_o thou_o as_o thou_o be_v give_v in_o the_o time_n of_o thy_o security_n through_o the_o way_n of_o thy_o own_o heart_n to_o presume_v and_o lay_v hold_v when_o thou_o shall_v not_o now_o this_o way_n of_o thy_o own_o heart_n be_v clear_o wrong_v so_o now_o the_o way_n of_o thy_o own_o heart_n be_v to_o misdoubt_v and_o draw_v back_o why_o shall_v thou_o not_o suspect_v it_o and_o resist_v it_o hold_v to_o thy_o comfortable_a warrant_n thou_o fear_v the_o lord_n at_o least_o thou_o desire_v to_o fear_v his_o name_n for_o even_o to_o such_o the_o scripture_n allow_v comfort_n thou_o obeye_v the_o voice_n of_o his_o servant_n or_o be_v willing_a to_o obey_v so_o far_o as_o thou_o be_v able_a then_o obey_v this_o also_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n and_o go_v on_o in_o a_o constant_a course_n of_o fear_n and_o obedience_n and_o fear_v not_o to_o believe_v this_o be_v the_o lord_n seal_v to_o depart_v from_o iniquity_n make_v your_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a by_o well_o do_v if_o you_o do_v these_o thing_n a_o entrance_n shall_v be_v minister_v unto_o yâ—u_n a_o undant_o into_o the_o everlasting_a kingdom_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o although_o it_o be_v not_o join_v with_o sense_n all_o this_o be_v speak_v not_o that_o you_o ought_v to_o rest_v upon_o this_o degree_n of_o humiliation_n for_o as_o you_o ought_v to_o go_v on_o from_o faith_n to_o faith_n and_o from_o grace_n to_o grace_n so_o from_o humiliation_n to_o humiliation_n moreover_o the_o work_n of_o humiliation_n namely_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o sight_n and_o sense_n of_o our_o own_o guiltiness_n and_o deserve_n be_v the_o very_a groundwork_n of_o the_o work_n of_o our_o salvation_n and_o sanctification_n and_o therefore_o shall_v be_v well_o lay_v great_o labour_v for_o and_o we_o shall_v strive_v to_o have_v it_o deep_o seat_v and_o stamp_v in_o our_o heart_n and_o memory_n for_o as_o any_o may_v feel_v by_o experience_n according_a to_o the_o to_o our_o city_n of_o refuge_n our_o horn_n of_o salvation_n and_o last_o faith_n be_v on_o foot_n and_o lively_a withal_o it_o be_v a_o whetstone_n and_o serve_v to_o quicken_v and_o set_v a_o edge_n upon_o our_o love_n and_o consequent_o upon_o our_o godly_a sorrow_n our_o zeal_n our_o obedience_n etc._n etc._n for_o then_o do_v we_o love_v most_o when_o we_o be_v most_o sensible_a how_o much_o be_v forgive_v we_o so_o great_a be_v the_o consequent_n of_o this_o point_n so_o then_o i_o say_v what_o i_o have_v speak_v for_o your_o comfort_n in_o this_o point_n be_v not_o that_o i_o will_v have_v you_o rest_v altogether_o upon_o the_o degree_n of_o humiliation_n already_o acknowledge_v by_o you_o only_o this_o i_o will_v not_o have_v it_o hide_v from_o your_o eye_n what_o you_o have_v receive_v but_o that_o you_o shall_v see_v it_o and_o acknowledge_v it_o that_o the_o lord_n may_v not_o want_v his_o thankfulness_n nor_o you_o your_o comfort_n and_o that_o satan_n may_v not_o prevail_v against_o you_o by_o that_o great_a and_o admirable_a policy_n of_o he_o as_o he_o have_v do_v with_o many_o to_o bear_v you_o back_o from_o faith_n and_o lay_v hold_n on_o the_o of_o nature_n concern_v these_o three_o mark_n of_o a_o right_n and_o true_a work_n of_o humiliation_n or_o of_o that_o preparatorie_n work_v of_o the_o spirit_n which_o go_v before_o faith_n the_o way_n i_o say_v to_o make_v these_o mark_v clear_a comfortable_a and_o convince_a be_v 1._o to_o compare_v they_o with_o our_o own_o former_a case_n and_o condition_n and_o so_o to_o try_v they_o by_o experience_n which_o we_o have_v already_o do_v 2._o to_o try_v they_o by_o compare_v they_o with_o the_o case_n of_o the_o ungodly_a and_o wicked_a and_o so_o to_o try_v they_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o now_o we_o be_v to_o do_v wherein_o although_o some_o thing_n be_v coincident_a with_o thing_n speak_v before_o the_o labour_n will_v not_o be_v unprofitable_a i._o the_o first_o mark_n of_o right_a humiliation_n and_o of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o that_o respect_n be_v this_o to_o wit_n namely_o the_o right_a sight_n of_o sin_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n when_o he_o come_v first_o into_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a work_v by_o the_o law_n or_o commandment_n give_v unto_o a_o man_n another_o sight_n of_o sin_n than_o any_o natural_a man_n how_o qualify_v soever_o he_o be_v with_o humane_a literature_n and_o natural_a wisdom_n can_v have_v this_o be_v clear_o understand_v by_o the_o doctrine_n and_o in_o the_o person_n of_o st._n paul_n rom._n 7._o i_o be_v alive_a without_o the_o law_n once_o that_o be_v in_o a_o good_a conceit_n of_o myself_o and_o of_o my_o own_o righteousness_n but_o when_o the_o commandment_n come_v that_o be_v the_o spirit_n with_o the_o commandment_n or_o law_n for_o he_o have_v the_o commandment_n or_o law_n in_o the_o letter_n before_o sin_v revive_v and_o i_o die_v i_o see_v another_o sight_n of_o my_o sinfulness_n then_o before_o to_o speak_v more_o plain_o and_o particular_o of_o this_o note_n when_o the_o spirit_n come_v and_o work_v this_o sight_n of_o sinfulness_n in_o he_o it_o work_v this_o threefold_a sight_n in_o he_o 1._o a_o sight_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o particular_a corruption_n 2._o of_o his_o gracelessness_n and_o want_n 3._o of_o his_o unrighteousness_n and_o imperfection_n of_o his_o best_a action_n now_o all_o these_o be_v hide_v from_o the_o natural_a man_n as_o be_v clear_a by_o example_n 1._o of_o the_o nation_n of_o the_o jew_n who_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v their_o own_o righteousness_n 2._o of_o the_o papist_n who_o take_v upon_o they_o for_o want_v of_o this_o sight_n to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n to_o merit_v to_o supererrogate_v 3._o of_o our_o own_o ignorance_n who_o till_o the_o point_n of_o death_n can_v be_v bring_v to_o this_o sight_n of_o their_o own_o sinfulness_n but_o ever_o be_v justify_v themselves_o thank_v god_n they_o never_o wrong_v any_o instead_o of_o confess_v and_o humble_v so_o that_o this_o be_v clear_o the_o case_n of_o the_o natural_a man_n but_o to_o the_o particular_n 1._o the_o spirit_n give_v to_o a_o man_n a_o sight_n of_o his_o sinfulness_n and_o corruption_n when_o the_o commandment_n come_v sin_n revive_v that_o be_v there_o be_v a_o further_a sight_n of_o sin_n hence_o be_v it_o that_o 1._o they_o be_v out_o of_o conceit_n of_o themselves_o think_v themselves_o to_o be_v the_o chief_a of_o sinner_n 2._o that_o they_o complain_v so_o heavy_o of_o their_o own_o corruption_n who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o the_o body_n of_o death_n 3._o they_o feel_v the_o flesh_n lust_a against_o the_o spirit_n gal._n 5._o now_o the_o ungodly_a or_o natural_a man_n be_v not_o so_o for_o 1._o he_o have_v not_o so_o evil_a a_o conceit_n of_o himself_o as_o to_o think_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o chief_a of_o sinner_n or_o a_o great_a sinner_n but_o quite_o contrary_a i_o thank_v god_n i_o be_o not_o like_o that_o publican_n 2._o he_o be_v not_o sensible_a of_o his_o sinfulness_n whether_o of_o the_o body_n of_o death_n or_o of_o his_o actual_a sin_n flow_v therefrom_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a he_o flatter_v himself_o in_o his_o own_o eye_n until_o his_o iniquity_n be_v find_v to_o be_v hateful_a as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o 3._o psal_n he_o feel_v no_o such_o battle_n between_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n for_o why_o the_o strong_a man_n hold_v the_o house_n so_o that_o all_o thing_n be_v at_o peace_n hence_o the_o one_o sort_n be_v prepare_v for_o christ_n the_o other_o not_o the_o whole_a need_v not_o the_o physician_n but_o they_o that_o be_v sick_a i_o come_v not_o to_o call_v the_o righteous_a but_o sinner_n to_o repentance_n q._n but_o you_o will_v say_v have_v the_o wicked_a or_o natural_a man_n no_o sight_n of_o his_o sin_n a._n some_o sight_n of_o some_o grosser_n discernible_a sin_n by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n but_o not_o such_o a_o sight_n of_o sin_n as_o the_o spirit_n give_v to_o the_o spiritual_a man_n they_o may_v see_v 1._o outward_a corruption_n of_o the_o flesh_n as_o theft_n fornication_n etc._n etc._n but_o not_o these_o more_o inward_a of_o the_o spirit_n pride_n spiritual_a idolatry_n unthankfulness_n infidelity_n impenitency_n 2._o they_o may_v see_v sin_n in_o the_o branch_n and_o stream_n that_o be_v actual_a sin_n but_o not_o in_o the_o root_n and_o fountain_n the_o body_n of_o death_n the_o sinfulness_n of_o their_o nature_n blindness_n of_o mind_n backwardness_n of_o will_n unholinesse_n and_o unheavenlinesse_n of_o affection_n hardness_n whore_v hypocrisy_n of_o their_o heart_n 3._o in_o
thou_o harbour_v some_o sin_n and_o will_v not_o submit_v thy_o neck_n to_o the_o yoke_n of_o some_o duty_n or_o other_o o_o than_o thy_o desire_n thy_o care_n thy_o waken_n thy_o wound_n have_v not_o be_v serious_a have_v not_o be_v deep_o enough_o to_o bruise_v out_o all_o corruption_n thou_o shall_v be_v ashamed_a and_o disappoint_v of_o the_o religion_n thou_o have_v because_o thou_o have_v not_o respect_n unto_o all_o god_n commandment_n he_o that_o offend_v in_o one_o be_v guilty_a of_o all_o thou_o regard_v iniquity_n in_o thy_o heart_n the_o lord_n will_v not_o hear_v thy_o prayer_n thou_o be_v but_o counterfeit_a coin_n for_o thou_o want_v the_o lord_n stamp_n and_o seal_v to_o wit_n to_o depart_v from_o iniquity_n even_o every_o iniquity_n thou_o give_v not_o all_o diligence_n god_n the_o make_n of_o thy_o own_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a the_o keep_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n and_o do_v thy_o contentment_n or_o discontentment_n thy_o grief_n and_o joy_n peace_n or_o unquietness_n arise_v from_o other_o ground_n at_o night_n then_o be_v sure_a some_o other_o thing_n go_v near_o thy_o heart_n then_o god_n or_o christ_n or_o thy_o own_o soul_n thy_o care_n be_v not_o serious_a thou_o fulfille_v not_o the_o rule_n thou_o seek_v not_o first_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n thou_o be_v not_o herein_o exercise_v always_o to_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n thou_o do_v not_o set_v the_o lord_n always_o before_o thou_o and_o so_o can_v not_o conclude_v that_o he_o be_v at_o thy_o right_a hand_n and_o so_o shall_v not_o be_v move_v mean_n of_o humiliation_n we_o have_v already_o speak_v of_o the_o general_a direction_n concern_v the_o work_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o child_n how_o we_o ought_v to_o carry_v ourselves_o upon_o the_o discovery_n of_o the_o want_n or_o weakness_n of_o any_o grace_n or_o work_v of_o god_n spirit_n in_o our_o soul_n to_o wit_n not_o to_o give_v place_n to_o despair_v but_o first_o of_o all_o by_o earnest_n and_o frequent_a prayer_n to_o have_v our_o recourse_n to_o god_n who_o give_v liberal_o to_o all_o and_o upbraid_v none_o and_o who_o have_v promise_v not_o to_o deny_v his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o they_o that_o ask_v it_o now_o although_o this_o be_v a_o good_a and_o main_a way_n to_o obtain_v what_o we_o want_v yet_o we_o must_v not_o rest_v here_o but_z to_o prayer_n must_v join_v the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n or_o else_o we_o shall_v not_o speed_v pray_v we_o never_o so_o diligent_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v we_o put_v to_o our_o hand_n and_o therefore_o command_v we_o work_v out_o etc._n etc._n and_o to_o this_o we_o be_v command_v even_o to_o humble_v ourselves_o although_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o god_n spirit_n i_o tell_v you_o that_o a_o point_n very_o much_o to_o be_v take_v heed_n to_o be_v that_o in_o use_v the_o mean_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o use_v the_o mean_n in_o general_a the_o word_n and_o the_o sacrament_n but_o we_o shall_v consider_v the_o particular_a mean_n the_o fit_a and_o near_a mean_n to_o beget_v or_o strengthen_v such_o a_o grace_n and_o for_o want_v of_o this_o we_o may_v take_v very_o great_a pain_n in_o general_a and_o we_o shall_v hardly_o speed_v and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v see_v how_o far_o the_o work_n be_v proceed_v in_o etc._n etc._n and_o as_o what_o our_o want_n be_v and_o where_o the_o stop_n lie_v and_o then_o to_o pray_v and_o to_o use_n mean_v most_o diligent_o and_o to_o use_v the_o particular_a and_o near_a mean_n and_o therefore_o i_o think_v it_o most_o needful_a to_o lay_v out_o the_o near_a and_o most_o particular_a mean_n of_o this_o work_n of_o humiliation_n that_o so_o we_o use_v they_o the_o lord_n blessing_n and_o concur_v by_o his_o spirit_n those_o who_o have_v not_o find_v this_o humiliation_n at_o all_o as_o yet_o may_v have_v it_o wrought_v in_o they_o and_o such_o of_o we_o who_o have_v find_v it_o in_o some_o measure_n may_v get_v it_o increase_v and_o strengthen_v and_o so_o all_o of_o we_o may_v be_v teach_v how_o to_o give_v obedience_n unto_o this_o exhortation_n humble_v yourselves_o under_o the_o mighty_a hand_n of_o god_n i._o the_o first_o and_o indeed_o a_o main_a mean_a to_o work_v humiliation_n in_o we_o be_v serious_o to_o miditatâ—_n upon_o the_o law_n &_o the_o threaten_n thereof_o and_o to_o apply_v they_o to_o ourselves_o in_o particular_a consider_v withal_o the_o truth_n of_o he_o that_o have_v pronounce_v they_o this_o by_o the_o concurrence_n of_o god_n spirit_n will_v be_v a_o notable_a means_n both_o to_o bring_v we_o to_o a_o right_a sight_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o to_o humiliation_n for_o they_o for_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v by_o the_o law_n be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o sin_n it_o be_v the_o glass_n and_o mirror_n that_o only_o can_v let_v we_o see_v the_o foul_a spot_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o again_o to_o consider_v the_o threaten_n will_v bring_v we_o to_o humiliation_n while_o i_o be_v without_o the_o law_n i_o live_v but_o when_o the_o commandment_n come_v sin_n revive_v and_o i_o die_v will_v you_o then_o take_v a_o course_n to_o get_v this_o work_n of_o humiliation_n wrought_v first_o of_o all_o get_v the_o clear_a knowledge_n of_o god_n law_n and_o examine_v thyself_o by_o it_o lay_v the_o rule_n of_o the_o law_n to_o thy_o own_o heart_n and_o so_o see_v how_o great_a a_o transgressor_n thou_o be_v for_o want_n of_o this_o the_o most_o part_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n live_v in_o sin_n without_o know_v that_o they_o sin_n and_o so_o without_o either_o repentance_n or_o amendment_n which_o be_v both_o pitiful_a and_o dangerous_a pitiful_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o lord_n holy_a will_n dangerous_a to_o your_o own_o soul_n all_o will_v say_v they_o be_v great_a sinner_n but_o i_o fear_v they_o see_v not_o wherein_o and_o so_o can_v neither_o repent_v nor_o amend_v o_o but_o if_o thou_o will_v apply_v the_o law_n to_o thyself_o thou_o will_v see_v that_o thou_o have_v be_v and_o still_o be_v a_o exceed_a great_a transgressor_n consider_v the_o first_o command_n and_o see_v if_o thou_o do_v not_o sin_v exceed_o against_o it_o if_o thy_o heart_n do_v not_o whore_n and_o commit_v spiritual_a adultery_n with_o the_o creature_n delight_v and_o trust_v more_o in_o it_o then_o in_o the_o creator_n god_n bless_v for_o ever_o and_o thou_o shall_v find_v also_o that_o thou_o put_v thyself_o most_o frequent_o in_o god_n place_n make_v thyself_o the_o utmost_a end_n of_o all_o thy_o action_n which_o how_o horrible_a sin_n they_o be_v i_o leave_v to_o thyself_o to_o and_o not_o to_o speak_v of_o thy_o frequent_a profane_v of_o god_n name_n see_v what_o either_o thou_o have_v do_v or_o speak_v to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n name_n notwithstanding_o it_o be_v the_o many_o thing_n that_o thou_o be_v make_v for_o look_v to_o the_o four_o command_v and_o see_v how_o thou_o have_v sanctify_v the_o sabbath_n in_o thy_o thought_n and_o discourse_n yea_o see_v if_o thou_o have_v not_o do_v in_o this_o point_n against_o thy_o light_n and_o even_o refuse_v to_o return_v and_o have_v hate_v to_o be_v reform_v choose_v rather_o to_o displease_v the_o immortal_a god_n then_o mortal_a man_n choose_v rather_o to_o follow_v thy_o own_o will_n than_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o that_o notwithstanding_o he_o have_v recommend_v it_o as_o a_o special_a point_n of_o his_o will_n unto_o thou_o and_o have_v bid_v thou_o remember_v to_o keep_v it_o holy_a consider_v the_o five_o command_v you_o that_o be_v superior_n whether_o you_o render_v to_o those_o that_o be_v under_o you_o that_o which_o be_v just_a and_o equal_a and_o you_o that_o be_v inferior_n if_o you_o give_v your_o superior_n that_o honour_n and_o respect_n in_o your_o heart_n

such_o thing_n they_o have_v be_v live_v in_o their_o sin_n so_o long_o and_o never_o find_v that_o thing_n go_v otherwise_o then_o well_o with_o they_o no_o dint_n of_o any_o such_o threaten_n yea_o they_o see_v other_o so_o also_o none_o live_v more_o pleasant_o nor_o more_o prosperous_o than_o those_o who_o take_v very_o great_a liberty_n to_o themselves_o to_o break_v the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o this_o certain_o harden_v the_o heart_n of_o many_o a_o sinner_n as_o the_o scripture_n bear_v witness_v because_o sentence_n be_v not_o execute_v against_o the_o wicked_a speedy_o therefore_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o child_n of_o man_n be_v full_o set_v in_o they_o to_o do_v evil_a because_o man_n be_v not_o present_o punish_v and_o take_v out_o of_o hand_n as_o we_o say_v but_o get_v leave_v to_o go_v away_o and_o escape_v with_o their_o sin_n for_o a_o time_n therefore_o both_o themselves_o and_o other_o take_v the_o great_a liberty_n to_o sin_n and_o sure_o we_o have_v need_v thou_o be_v not_o deal_v with_o according_a to_o god_n justice_n and_o judgement_n and_o threaten_n be_v not_o from_o thy_o deserve_n but_o from_o the_o riches_n and_o the_o goodness_n long_o suffer_v and_o patience_n of_o the_o lord_n wait_v upon_o thy_o repentance_n which_o if_o thou_o despise_v when_o the_o date_n of_o it_o be_v run_v out_o thou_o shall_v find_v the_o truth_n of_o his_o threaten_n and_o the_o debt_n of_o his_o justice_n so_o much_o the_o great_a the_o other_o thing_n he_o reply_v be_v this_o although_o thou_o shall_v escape_v the_o lord_n justice_n and_o judgement_n all_o thy_o life_n time_n here_o what_o of_o that_o be_v there_o no_o other_o place_n for_o justice_n for_o judgement_n for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o god_n threaten_n then_o in_o this_o life_n be_v not_o the_o chief_a in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v alas_o thou_o consider_v not_o fare_v it_o with_o thou_o here_o as_o it_o will_v that_o yet_o thou_o be_v treasure_v up_o wrath_n against_o the_o day_n of_o wrath_n and_o the_o revelation_n of_o the_o just_a judgement_n of_o god_n o_o that_o you_o will_v consider_v this_o now_o that_o you_o be_v not_o a_o hair_n breadth_n further_o off_o or_o at_o least_o the_o free_a from_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n that_o they_o be_v not_o instant_o pour_v out_o upon_o thou_o what_o of_o that_o yet_o sure_o as_o the_o lord_n be_v true_a they_o do_v abide_v thou_o and_o when_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v a_o sufficient_a proof_n of_o his_o patience_n towards_o thou_o they_o shall_v come_v upon_o thou_o when_o thou_o least_o expect_v as_o pain_n the_o manner_n of_o obtain_v mercy_n first_o then_o i_o say_v they_o presume_v and_o misapply_v god_n mercy_n and_o christ_n merit_n to_o themselves_o this_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o make_v many_o a_o soul_n to_o perish_v and_o therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o take_v heed_n unto_o it_o they_o acknowledge_v that_o they_o be_v sinner_n and_o that_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n do_v belong_v to_o they_o o_o but_o they_o believe_v in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o in_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n in_o he_o who_o have_v free_v they_o from_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n and_o so_o they_o of_o god_n be_v upon_o good_a ground_n &_o sure_a warrant_n do_v all_o believe_v that_o say_v or_o think_v they_o believe_v come_v to_o any_o almost_o will_v they_o not_o say_v they_o believe_v as_o well_o as_o other_o but_o the_o scripture_n say_v that_o many_o be_v call_v and_o but_o few_o be_v choose_v it_o say_v that_o many_o be_v deceive_v and_o why_o may_v not_o thou_o be_v deceive_v among_o the_o rest_n indeed_o if_o thou_o have_v ever_o be_v humble_v for_o thy_o bypass_a sin_n and_o so_o have_v flee_v unto_o christ_n and_o strive_v to_o rest_v upon_o he_o if_o thou_o have_v break_v off_o the_o course_n of_o thy_o iniquity_n and_o turn_v thy_o back_n upon_o thy_o sin_n and_o be_v endeavour_v to_o repent_v of_o what_o be_v past_a and_o to_o abstain_v for_o time_n to_o upon_o it_o yea_o do_v not_o many_o of_o god_n child_n find_v it_o hard_o enough_o all_o their_o whole_a life_n to_o get_v faith_n repentance_n and_o mercy_n and_o will_v thou_o come_v so_o easy_o by_o they_o and_o think_v to_o get_v mercy_n for_o a_o word_n of_o thy_o mouth_n and_o final_o to_o end_v this_o point_n
for_o thyself_o suppose_v that_o thou_o be_v sure_a of_o mercy_n and_o that_o thou_o have_v already_o obtain_v mercy_n yet_o thou_o have_v need_v nevertheless_o to_o humble_v thyself_o under_o the_o mighty_a hand_n of_o god_n thereby_o to_o prevent_v the_o sharpness_n of_o the_o lord_n chastisement_n and_o to_o be_v correct_v in_o measure_n thou_o have_v need_v to_o judge_v thyself_o that_o thou_o may_v not_o be_v judge_v for_o even_o where_o the_o lord_n be_v merciful_a he_o take_v vengeance_n for_o transgression_n he_o may_v well_o correct_v in_o measure_n but_o he_o will_v not_o leave_v altogether_o unpunished_a upon_o david_n first_o confession_n it_o be_v say_v to_o david_n thy_o sin_n be_v forgive_v thou_o and_o yet_o you_o see_v what_o he_o suffer_v both_o in_o regard_n come_v than_o a_o deep_a and_o due_a consideration_n of_o the_o judgement_n against_o sinuer_n guilty_a of_o the_o like_a transgression_n and_o sin_n with_o ourselves_o add_v withal_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o unchangeableness_n of_o the_o lord_n god_n who_o deal_v thus_o with_o they_o and_o inflict_v those_o judgement_n upon_o they_o for_o he_o be_v the_o same_o yesterday_o and_o upon_o the_o condition_n of_o seek_v and_o of_o fervent_a seek_n that_o therefore_o you_o shall_v want_v they_o consider_v that_o the_o grace_n of_o seek_v he_o promise_v it_o also_o zach._n 12.10_o of_o the_o other_o to_o pray_v and_o to_o neglect_v to_o use_v the_o mean_n in_o either_o of_o these_o be_v to_o tempt_v god_n and_o to_o put_v he_o to_o the_o work_n of_o wonder_n and_o miracle_n it_o be_v true_a that_o prayer_n be_v the_o main_a thing_n and_o bring_v a_o blessing_n upon_o our_o use_v the_o mean_n use_v we_o the_o mean_n never_o so_o diligent_o unless_o by_o prayer_n we_o get_v the_o lord_n to_o bless_v they_o he_o that_o build_v build_v in_o vain_a but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n as_o our_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n can_v serve_v the_o turn_n without_o the_o lord_n blessing_n and_o work_v of_o his_o spirit_n obtain_v by_o prayer_n so_o the_o lord_n although_o he_o can_v yet_o will_v he_o not_o give_v any_o grace_n without_o we_o use_v the_o mean_n for_o ordinary_o he_o work_v by_o mean_n hence_o be_v it_o work_v out_o your_o salvation_n plough_v up_o the_o fallow_a ground_n of_o your_o heart_n edify_v one_o another_o in_o your_o most_o holy_a faith_n about_o they_o and_o feed_v upon_o they_o especial_o so_o feed_v yourself_o with_o food_n convenient_a for_o every_o grace_n both_o the_o own_o proper_a &_o peculiar_a mean_n this_o be_v to_o be_v as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v a_o wise_a masterbuilder_n as_o we_o have_v need_n of_o wise_a master_n bvilder_n so_o we_o have_v need_v ourselves_o to_o be_v wise_a bvilder_n one_o that_o be_v build_v a_o house_n or_o wall_n he_o will_v not_o take_v any_o stone_n that_o be_v near_a by_o he_o but_o he_o will_v look_v what_o stone_n will_v fit_v such_o a_o place_n and_o this_o he_o take_v even_o so_o we_o shall_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o work_n of_o our_o own_o salvation_n we_o shall_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o i_o say_v to_o use_v the_o mean_n in_o general_a
