communication_n of_o god_n unto_o a_o creature_n be_v enough_o to_o make_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n more_o special_a if_o this_o be_v enough_o to_o make_v a_o creature_n to_o live_v with_o god_n and_o to_o be_v before_o his_o face_n because_o they_o be_v there_o where_o god_n do_v most_o communicate_v himself_o then_o certain_o when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n we_o come_v to_o be_v near_o god_n and_o be_v with_o god_n because_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n be_v those_o mean_n that_o the_o lord_n have_v appoint_v for_o the_o let_v out_o of_o himself_o in_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o goodness_n and_o mercy_n to_o his_o people_n you_o may_v expect_v other_o manner_n of_o communication_n of_o god_n goodness_n through_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n than_o in_o any_o other_o way_n and_o that_o be_v the_o second_o respect_n wherein_o you_o may_v be_v say_v to_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n three_o you_o may_v be_v say_v to_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n because_o than_o we_o shall_v and_o if_o we_o worship_n god_n as_o we_o ought_v we_o do_v act_v our_o faith_n and_o humility_n and_o all_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n we_o do_v act_v they_o as_o it_o be_v upon_o god_n when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o that_o be_v require_v in_o every_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o you_o shall_v stir_v up_o the_o faculty_n of_o your_o soul_n and_o all_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o you_o shall_v act_v they_o upon_o god_n when_o you_o be_v worship_v of_o he_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o come_v with_o grace_n when_o you_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n but_o there_o must_v be_v a_o act_n of_o that_o grace_n upon_o god_n and_o so_o we_o find_v in_o scripture_n that_o the_o act_n of_o grace_n upon_o god_n it_o be_v a_o draw_v near_o to_o he_o therefore_o in_o isa_n 29.13_o the_o lord_n complain_v there_o this_o people_n draw_v near_o to_o i_o with_o their_o lip_n but_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o i_o as_o if_o god_n shall_v say_v indeed_o they_o come_v and_o speak_v to_o i_o and_o therefore_o they_o think_v they_o draw_v nigh_o to_o i_o but_o i_o expect_v that_o their_o heart_n shall_v be_v act_v upon_o i_o that_o be_v the_o meaning_n and_o in_o zeph_n 3.2_o god_n complain_v there_o of_o his_o people_n that_o they_o do_v not_o draw_v near_o to_o he_o as_o they_o shall_v and_o it_o appear_v plain_o it_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o and_o when_o you_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n you_o worship_v he_o now_o if_o i_o shall_v come_v from_o one_o end_n of_o the_o congregation_n to_o the_o other_o and_o ask_v every_o one_o of_o you_o this_o question_n it_o be_v your_o duty_n to_o worship_n god_n be_v it_o not_o yes_o that_o you_o will_v all_o be_v ready_a to_o answer_v and_o what_o do_v you_o do_v when_o go_v a_o voyage_n you_o make_v great_a preparation_n now_o if_o man_n and_o woman_n will_v but_o understand_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n to_o be_v great_a they_o will_v see_v a_o necessity_n to_o make_v a_o preparation_n many_o man_n for_o want_n of_o preparation_n to_o duty_n they_o lose_v a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o time_n when_o they_o come_v to_o perform_v a_o duty_n of_o worship_n in_o prayer_n they_o spend_v half_o the_o time_n that_o be_v convenient_a to_o be_v spend_v in_o prayer_n before_o they_o begin_v to_o pray_v and_o so_o in_o hear_v the_o word_n they_o be_v a_o long_a time_n before_o they_o can_v settle_v themselves_o to_o attend_v to_o the_o word_n or_o in_o any_o other_o kind_n of_o worship_n i_o say_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o time_n in_o the_o worship_n be_v spend_v ordinary_o before_o we_o can_v get_v our_o heart_n to_o close_v with_o the_o worship_n now_o that_o be_v a_o sore_a and_o a_o great_a evil_a to_o lose_v any_o part_n of_o the_o time_n of_o worship_n christian_n i_o beseech_v you_o account_v high_o of_o the_o time_n of_o your_o worship_n you_o have_v be_v so_o long_a time_n at_o prayer_n yea_o but_o how_o much_o of_o it_o have_v be_v lose_v because_o you_o have_v not_o prepare_v before_o hand_n for_o it_o perhaps_o you_o kneel_v upon_o your_o knee_n but_o you_o be_v a_o long_a time_n before_o you_o can_v get_v your_o heartâ—_n wâ—â—m_n at_o your_o work_n â—hy_a you_o shall_v have_v be_v warm_a before_o you_o have_v come_v it_o be_v so_o oftentimes_o with_o many_o man_n when_o they_o meet_v together_o and_o there_o be_v no_o preparation_n for_o their_o business_n they_o come_v together_o and_o they_o be_v a_o long_a time_n before_o they_o can_v buckle_v to_o the_o business_n that_o they_o come_v about_o because_o there_o be_v no_o preparation_n but_o if_o there_o be_v preparation_n make_v that_o every_o man_n know_v before_o hand_n what_o his_o work_n be_v they_o can_v fall_v to_o it_o and_o they_o can_v dispatch_v as_o much_o in_o one_o hour_n as_o other_o do_v in_o two_o or_o three_o but_o of_o that_o we_o shall_v speak_v more_o afterward_o three_o there_o must_v be_v preparation_n because_o our_o heart_n be_v natural_o exceed_o unprepared_a for_o every_o good_a work_n we_o be_v all_o natural_o even_o reprobate_a to_o every_o good_a work_n the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n be_v high_a and_o spiritual_a and_o holy_a thing_n but_o by_o nature_n our_o heart_n grovel_v in_o the_o dirâ—_n and_o we_o be_v carnal_a sensual_a drossy_a dead_a slight_a sottish_a and_o vain_a altogether_o unfit_a to_o come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n oh_o that_o we_o be_v but_o apprehensive_a and_o sensible_a of_o the_o unfitness_n of_o our_o heart_n to_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n perhaps_o because_o thou_o know_v not_o god_n thou_o can_v rush_v into_o his_o presence_n without_o any_o more_o ado_n but_o if_o thou_o know_v thyself_o and_o god_n thou_o can_v not_o but_o see_v thyself_o altogether_o unfit_a for_o his_o presence_n and_o so_o as_o to_o wonder_v that_o the_o lordshould_n not_o spurn_v thou_o out_o of_o his_o presence_n every_o time_n thou_o come_v unto_o he_o there_o have_v need_v then_o be_v preparation_n because_o we_o be_v so_o unfit_a to_o come_v into_o his_o presence_n four_o there_o have_v need_n be_v preparation_n because_o of_o the_o great_a hindrance_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n this_o business_n and_o the_o other_o business_n will_v hinder_v the_o entanglement_n they_o will_v hinder_v the_o temptation_n of_o the_o devil_n they_o will_v hinder_v sometime_o the_o indisposition_n of_o our_o body_n do_v mighty_o hinder_v and_o the_o stir_n of_o the_o passion_n of_o our_o mind_n they_o hinder_v if_o there_o be_v any_o business_n fall_v out_o amiss_o in_o the_o family_n and_o any_o thing_n go_v but_o cross_a how_o be_v we_o put_v off_o the_o hinge_n and_o make_v unfit_a for_o holy_a duty_n there_o have_v need_n be_v preparation_n therefore_o because_o there_o be_v so_o many_o hindrance_n in_o the_o way_n many_o of_o you_o will_v complain_v that_o you_o be_v much_o hinder_v but_o do_v you_o do_v what_o you_o can_v to_o make_v preparation_n before_o hand_n do_v the_o hindrance_n that_o you_o complain_v of_o put_v you_o on_o to_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o careful_a to_o make_v due_a preparation_n for_o holy_a duty_n five_o we_o find_v that_o the_o heathen_n themselves_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n when_o they_o do_v but_o worship_v their_o idol_n god_n they_o will_v make_v some_o preparation_n such_o as_o be_v suitable_a to_o those_o god_n that_o they_o worship_v therefore_o they_o will_v wash_v their_o flesh_n and_o purge_v themselves_o but_o though_o their_o preparation_n be_v but_o very_o poor_a yet_o they_o teach_v we_o thus_o much_o that_o they_o be_v convin_v in_o their_o conscience_n that_o when_o god_n be_v to_o be_v worship_v people_n shall_v be_v prepare_v the_o sixth_o &_o last_o reason_n have_v a_o great_a deal_n in_o it_o which_o i_o beseech_v you_o consider_v of_o we_o find_v that_o the_o scripture_n do_v make_v the_o uprightnes_n of_o the_o heart_n much_o to_o consist_v in_o preparation_n for_o worship_n and_o do_v make_v the_o falseness_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o consist_v in_o this_o that_o man_n do_v not_o prepare_v perhaps_o you_o have_v not_o so_o much_o think_v of_o this_o but_o yet_o it_o be_v of_o excellent_a use_n unto_o you_o we_o shall_v find_v the_o scripture_n do_v make_v the_o very_a uprightness_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o confist_n in_o the_o preparation_n for_o duty_n and_o the_o falseness_n of_o a_o man_n heart_n to_o consist_v in_o this_o that_o he_o make_v not_o conscience_n to_o prepare_v his_o heart_n for_o god_n and_o his_o worship_n and_o this_o i_o will_v show_v unto_o you_o very_o plain_o and_o clear_o take_v these_o two_o example_n the_o first_o of_o rehoboam_n and_o the_o second_o of_o jehoshaphat_n one_o a_o wicked_a man_n who_o heart_n be_v false_a and_o the_o other_o a_o godly_a man_n who_o heart_n be_v right_a with_o god_n the_o falseness_n of_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o one_o be_v in_o 2_o chron._n 12.14_o there_o you_o have_v what_o god_n thought_n of_o rehoboam_n be_v in_o the_o verse_n before_o but_o now_o he_o bring_v the_o reason_n of_o his_o sentence_n upon_o he_o and_o say_v the_o text_n he_o do_v evil_a because_o he_o prepare_v not_o his_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n there_o be_v many_o good_a thing_n that_o rehoboam_n do_v i_o may_v show_v you_o some_o thing_n as_o how_o he_o do_v obey_v the_o prophet_n of_o god_n when_o he_o be_v seek_v to_o avenge_v himself_o upon_o those_o that_o do_v rend_v themselves_o from_o his_o obedience_n the_o lord_n do_v but_o send_v his_o prophet_n and_o though_o he_o have_v a_o army_n ready_a to_o revenge_v himself_o upon_o those_o that_o in_o a_o way_n of_o rebellion_n do_v rend_v themselves_o from_o under_o his_o government_n and_o he_o obey_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o for_o all_o that_o he_o do_v evil_a in_o the_o fight_n of_o the_o lord_n god_n look_v upon_o he_o as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v no_o uprightness_n in_o he_o why_o for_o he_o do_v not_o prepare_v his_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n say_v god_n i_o look_v upon_o all_o rehoboam_n do_v as_o nothing_o i_o look_v upon_o his_o way_n as_o evil_n and_o himself_o as_o a_o wicked_a man_n why_o because_o he_o do_v not_o prepare_v his_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n if_o his_o heart_n have_v be_v upright_o with_o i_o he_o will_v have_v prepare_v his_o heart_n to_o seek_v i_o i_o beseech_v you_o now_o lie_v this_o text_n to_o your_o heart_n do_v you_o prepare_v your_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n when_o you_o go_v to_o prayr_a can_v you_o say_v that_o you_o take_v pain_n in_o prepare_v your_o heart_n for_o it_o and_o in_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o so_o likewise_o for_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n now_o for_o jehoshaphat_n a_o godly_a man_n in_o 2_o chron._n 19.3_o there_o you_o may_v
see_v what_o the_o lord_n say_v of_o jehoshaphat_n that_o be_v godly_a nevertheless_o there_o be_v good_a thing_n find_v in_o thou_o in_o that_o thou_o have_v take_v away_o the_o grove_n out_o of_o the_o land_n and_o have_v prepare_v thy_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n jehoshaphat_n be_v find_v guilty_a in_o join_v himself_o to_o wicked_a man_n too_o much_o the_o prophet_n come_v and_o say_v to_o faulty_a in_o join_v with_o those_o that_o be_v wicked_a and_o be_v rebuke_v by_o the_o prophet_n from_o the_o lord_n what_o will_v thou_o join_v with_o the_o wicked_a the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v upon_o thou_o well_o but_o for_o all_o that_o i_o beseech_v you_o observe_v it_o that_o at_o that_o time_n when_o the_o lord_n be_v most_o displease_v against_o jehoshaphat_n and_o send_v his_o prophet_n in_o his_o name_n to_o pronounce_v this_o that_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v out_o against_o he_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o god_n can_v but_o take_v notice_n of_o this_o that_o he_o have_v a_o upright_a heart_n though_o he_o fail_v in_o that_o particular_a yet_o there_o be_v some_o good_a find_v in_o thou_o in_o that_o thou_o have_v prepare_v thy_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n indeed_o rule_n of_o they_o and_o the_o end_n of_o they_o get_v your_o heart_n possess_v with_o meditation_n of_o this_o nature_n and_o in_o this_o as_o a_o special_a thing_n do_v consist_v your_o preparation_n to_o holy_a duty_n and_o that_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n 2_o the_o second_o thing_n wherein_o the_o preparation_n to_o a_o duty_n consist_v it_o be_v in_o this_o in_o the_o take_n off_o of_o the_o heart_n from_o every_o sinful_a way_n the_o endeavour_n at_o least_o if_o there_o be_v iniquity_n in_o thy_o hand_n or_o heart_n labour_v to_o put_v it_o out_o when_o thou_o be_v difficult_a when_o we_o come_v upon_o they_o unprepared_a if_o you_o have_v a_o friend_n come_v to_o dinner_n or_o supper_n to_o you_o and_o shall_v come_v sudden_o and_o you_o have_v nothing_o prepare_v there_o will_v be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o stir_n in_o the_o house_n but_o if_o you_o have_v every_o thing_n prepare_v it_o will_v be_v carry_v on_o in_o a_o easy_a way_n and_o the_o reason_n why_o people_n complain_v so_o much_o of_o difficulty_n in_o duty_n it_o be_v because_o their_o heart_n be_v not_o prepare_v indeed_o we_o have_v natural_o many_o thing_n to_o keep_v we_o off_o from_o god_n but_o now_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v prepare_v for_o a_o holy_a duty_n it_o go_v off_o as_o easy_a to_o god_n even_o into_o the_o infinite_a ocean_n of_o all_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n as_o a_o ship_n go_v off_o to_o be_v launch_v when_o you_o have_v make_v preparation_n for_o it_o &_o the_o heart_n can_v go_v with_o a_o holy_a boldness_n to_o god_n when_o you_o have_v make_v preparation_n for_o holy_a duty_n in_o job_n 11._o the_o place_n which_o i_o quote_v before_o for_o the_o work_n of_o preparation_n do_v but_o consider_v a_o verse_n or_o two_o further_a and_o profession_n a_o long_a time_n but_o yet_o have_v not_o have_v the_o weight_n of_o this_o duty_n upon_o your_o spirit_n now_o be_v careful_a for_o a_o while_n to_o prepare_v for_o every_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n that_o god_n call_v you_o to_o and_o i_o say_v within_o a_o little_a time_n thou_o may_v bring_v thy_o heart_n into_o such_o a_o temper_n as_o thou_o may_v be_v ready_a at_o all_o time_n to_o perform_v holy_a duty_n because_o you_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o come_v to_o that_o temper_n and_o frame_v that_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v to_o pray_v continual_o for_o indeed_o so_o it_o towards_o god_n in_o some_o vile_a way_n i_o say_v it_o be_v require_v of_o they_o to_o be_v more_o solemn_a in_o the_o work_n of_o preparation_n 2_o but_o now_o for_o the_o second_o case_n which_o forbear_v the_o performance_n of_o it_o as_o suppose_v prayer_n or_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n or_o come_v to_o the_o word_n or_o any_o other_o holy_a duty_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o doubt_n be_v because_o when_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v conscientious_a they_o think_v with_o themselves_o that_o they_o must_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n now_o if_o they_o can_v find_v case_n in_o regard_n of_o this_o and_o it_o make_v they_o watchful_a for_o time_n to_o come_v to_o take_v heed_n of_o those_o thing_n that_o have_v put_v they_o in_o such_o a_o unpreparation_n as_o they_o find_v their_o heart_n to_o be_v in_o at_o this_o time_n now_o if_o it_o be_v so_o with_o thou_o it_o be_v a_o good_a sign_n that_o thy_o heart_n may_v be_v upright_o with_o god_n though_o through_o infirmity_n it_o come_v at_o such_o a_o time_n to_o be_v unprepared_a for_o the_o duty_n but_o yet_o suppose_v i_o find_v i_o be_o not_o prepare_v i_o be_o grieve_v and_o trouble_v at_o it_o for_o that_o must_v be_v premise_v whether_o be_v i_o better_a to_o leave_v the_o duty_n for_o this_o time_n than_o to_o fall_v upon_o it_o in_o such_o a_o unpreparation_n as_o this_o be_v now_o for_o the_o answer_n to_o this_o question_n 1_o first_o that_o which_o i_o will_v answer_v to_o it_o be_v this_o the_o omission_n of_o a_o duty_n or_o the_o lay_n of_o a_o duty_n aside_o will_v never_o so_o as_o your_o heart_n be_v out_o of_o temper_n and_o frame_v for_o a_o duty_n you_o lay_v it_o aside_o now_o be_v you_o more_o fâ—t_o the_o next_o day_n if_o you_o do_v neglect_v duty_n in_o the_o morning_n upon_o any_o business_n be_v you_o fit_a to_o perform_v duty_n at_o night_n because_o of_o it_o â—_o you_o will_v not_o find_v it_o to_o be_v so_o the_o forbear_v a_o duty_n now_o will_v not_o make_v the_o soul_n fit_a for_o a_o duty_n afterward_o â—â—erefore_o it_o be_v no_o wisdom_n to_o forbear_v a_o duty_n for_o want_n of_o preparation_n because_o the_o forbearance_n will_v never_o help_v to_o further_a preparation_n but_o will_v make_v the_o soul_n more_o unfit_a for_o duty_n it_o be_v a_o excellent_a speech_n that_o i_o read_v that_o luther_n have_v concern_v himself_o i_o have_v learn_v this_o by_o experience_n that_o the_o often_o i_o do_v omit_v duty_n the_o often_o do_v i_o make_v myself_o the_o more_o unfit_a for_o duty_n and_o cause_n i_o have_v to_o abhor_v myself_o it_o be_v not_o the_o defer_v that_o make_v thou_o the_o more_o fit_a 2_o therefore_o consider_v that_o this_o be_v but_o a_o temptation_n and_o that_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n that_o i_o will_v propound_v to_o those_o that_o shall_v omit_v a_o duty_n because_o they_o be_v not_o prepare_v that_o this_o be_v but_o a_o temptation_n to_o keep_v thou_o from_o it_o to_o tell_v thou_o that_o offer_v to_o god_n without_o spot_n that_o our_o conscience_n may_v be_v purge_v from_o dead_a work_n that_o we_o may_v be_v purge_v from_o that_o natural_a filthiness_n and_o uncleanness_n in_o which_o we_o all_o be_v for_o the_o whole_a world_n do_v lie_v in_o filth_n as_o a_o carrion_n do_v lie_v in_o his_o slime_n now_o if_o we_o will_v worship_v god_n so_o as_o to_o sanctify_v he_o we_o must_v apply_v christ_n to_o our_o soul_n and_o get_v our_o conscience_n purge_v from_o dead_a work_n and_o to_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n in_o we_o to_o quicken_v up_o our_o heart_n in_o the_o way_n of_o holiness_n to_o have_v the_o image_n of_o jesus_n christ_n in_o we_o whereby_o we_o may_v be_v holy_a according_a to_o our_o proportion_n even_o as_o he_o himself_o be_v holy_a this_o be_v the_o sanctify_a of_o the_o heart_n there_o must_v be_v a_o habitual_a sanctification_n and_o a_o actual_a sanctification_n of_o the_o heart_n a_o habitual_a that_o be_v that_o the_o heart_n must_v be_v change_v through_o the_o work_n of_o regeneration_n there_o must_v be_v a_o regeneration_n in_o the_o heart_n there_o must_v be_v divine_a principle_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o the_o heart_n but_o you_o will_v say_v may_v not_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n pray_v to_o that_o i_o answer_v it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v his_o duty_n to_o pray_v pour_v forth_o sanctify_a of_o the_o heart_n be_v 1_o first_o because_o the_o lord_n do_v first_o accept_v of_o the_o person_n before_o he_o do_v accept_v of_o the_o action_n man_n indeed_o do_v accept_v of_o the_o person_n of_o man_n because_o they_o do_v good_a action_n but_o god_n accept_v of_o the_o action_n of_o man_n because_o their_o person_n be_v good_a if_o indeed_o we_o see_v a_o man_n do_v good_a than_o we_o love_v he_o and_o accept_v of_o the_o person_n of_o the_o man_n but_o god_n first_o will_v accept_v of_o the_o person_n before_o the_o action_n as_o the_o lord_n acept_v of_o abel_n first_o and_o then_o he_o accept_v his_o offering_n so_o you_o must_v look_v to_o that_o to_o have_v your_o person_n first_o accept_v of_o god_n before_o any_o duty_n can_v be_v accept_v you_o think_v though_o you_o be_v wicked_a and_o sinful_a yet_o if_o you_o amend_v your_o life_n god_n will_v accept_v of_o you_o you_o go_v that_o way_n to_o work_v but_o certain_o that_o be_v the_o wrong_a way_n prayer_n and_o so_o in_o the_o old_a testament_n too_o it_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o emblem_n of_o prayer_n the_o offer_v up_o of_o our_o prayer_n be_v the_o offer_v up_o of_o incense_n to_o god_n and_o heart_n suitable_a to_o the_o several_a attribute_n of_o god_n for_o that_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n to_o have_v the_o duty_n to_o be_v such_o as_o be_v some_o way_n suitable_a to_o such_o a_o god_n as_o we_o be_v now_o worship_v now_o then_o let_v we_o consider_v what_o the_o scrip_n ure_n say_v of_o god_n and_o then_o let_v we_o see_v what_o suitable_a disposition_n we_o shall_v have_v in_o we_o unto_o those_o thing_n that_o the_o scripture_n say_v of_o god_n 1_o first_o you_o know_v the_o scripture_n say_v that_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n in_o joh_n 4.24_o then_o present_o christ_n say_v that_o he_o that_o worship_v he_o must_v worship_v he_o in_o spirit_n that_o be_v there_o must_v be_v a_o suitableness_n in_o our_o worship_n to_o what_o god_n be_v be_v god_n a_o spirit_n then_o all_o that_o worship_v he_o must_v worship_v he_o in_o spirit_n and_o truth_n that_o be_v thus_o when_o i_o be_o to_o go_v to_o worship_n god_n i_o must_v consider_v of_o he_o as_o he_o be_v a_o infinite_a and_o glorious_a spirit_n well_o then_o sure_o bodily_a worship_n be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o i_o though_o i_o do_v kneel_v down_o in_o prayer_n or_o do_v come_v and_o present_v my_o body_n to_o hear_v the_o word_n or_o my_o body_n to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n this_o be_v not_o to_o worship_n god_n as_o a_o spirit_n if_o indeed_o that_o our_o god_n be_v as_o the_o heathen_n that_o be_v corporeal_a than_o it_o be_v another_o matter_n then_o bodily_a worship_n will_v serve_v the_o turn_n but_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n he_o must_v have_v spiritual_a worship_n therefore_o my_o soul_n and_o all_o that_o be_v within_o i_o magnify_v his_o name_n say_v david_n my_o soul_n magnify_v his_o name_n not_o my_o lip_n only_o but_o my_o soul_n the_o apostle_n in_o 1_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n your_o soul_n must_v feed_v upon_o jesus_n christ_n bodily_a worship_n without_o soul-worship_n be_v nothing_o but_o soul-worship_n may_v be_v accept_v without_o bodily_a worship_n therefore_o it_o be_v the_o soul_n that_o god_n do_v principal_o look_v at_o in_o holy_a duty_n if_o you_o be_v not_o able_a to_o worship_n god_n in_o your_o body_n you_o may_v worship_v he_o in_o your_o soul_n and_o god_n regard_v that_o bodily_a exercise_n in_o holy_a duty_n be_v little_a worth_n somewhat_o it_o may_v be_v worth_a i_o confess_v sometime_o bodily_a exercise_n may_v further_o the_o soul_n as_o a_o reverend_a carriage_n of_o the_o body_n and_o the_o like_a but_o it_o be_v nothing_o in_o comparison_n the_o great_a work_n be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n and_o must_v be_v worship_v in_o spirit_n and_o god_n be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o spirit_n not_o only_o in_o that_o he_o be_v not_o of_o so_o thick_a a_o corporal_a substance_n but_o it_o note_v the_o simplicity_n of_o god_n he_o be_v without_o any_o composition_n whatsoever_o be_v in_o god_n be_v god_n himself_o he_o be_v absolute_o one_o there_o be_v not_o divers_a thing_n in_o god_n now_o then_o those_o that_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o must_v worship_v he_o in_o spirit_n and_o in_o truth_n
one_o and_o afterward_o they_o have_v fall_v off_o they_o be_v wont_v constant_o in_o their_o family_n and_o in_o secret_a in_o their_o chamber_n to_o be_v worship_v of_o god_n and_o they_o account_v it_o the_o very_a joy_n of_o their_o life_n for_o the_o present_a to_o be_v worship_v of_o god_n but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o they_o now_o as_o it_o be_v yea_o they_o be_v fall_v off_o it_o may_v be_v from_o their_o very_a profession_n of_o religion_n and_o turn_v loose_v and_o now_o to_o be_v in_o vain_a company_n to_o drink_v or_o play_v be_v better_a to_o they_o than_o any_o service_n or_o worship_n of_o god_n they_o prize_v more_o to_o be_v in_o company_n with_o their_o sport_n than_o to_o hear_v a_o sermon_n or_o to_o be_v in_o communion_n with_o the_o people_n of_o god_n in_o prayer_n heretofore_o they_o will_v not_o have_v change_v one_o short_a time_n of_o private_a communion_n with_o god_n for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o pleasure_n and_o content_a in_o the_o world_n but_o now_o it_o be_v otherwise_o with_o they_o how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o these_o be_v apostatise_v thus_o from_o god_n sure_o here_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o it_o that_o they_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n at_o the_o most_o it_o be_v but_o a_o work_n of_o conscience_n that_o put_v they_o upon_o they_o and_o they_o have_v but_o some_o flash_n there_o be_v no_o real_a sanctification_n of_o their_o heart_n whereby_o they_o do_v sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o upon_o this_o it_o be_v that_o they_o have_v leave_v off_o this_o i_o dare_v say_v that_o there_o be_v never_o any_o soul_n that_o do_v know_v what_o it_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o worship_n that_o ever_o be_v weary_a of_o worship_v god_n it_o may_v be_v some_o of_o you_o may_v say_v we_o have_v hear_v that_o there_o be_v much_o require_v in_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o duty_n and_o that_o be_v the_o only_a way_n to_o weary_a the_o soul_n and_o to_o make_v it_o fall_v off_o oh_o no_o as_o we_o say_v the_o last_o day_n there_o be_v not_o any_o one_o thing_n that_o have_v be_v open_v for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o duty_n that_o any_o gracious_a heart_n can_v tell_v how_o to_o miss_v and_o the_o more_o we_o do_v sanctify_v his_o name_n the_o more_o we_o shall_v be_v in_o love_n with_o worship_n for_o it_o be_v from_o hence_o that_o those_o that_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o worship_n will_v hold_v out_o because_o they_o will_v find_v the_o sweetness_n of_o worship_n they_o will_v meet_v with_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o so_o they_o come_v to_o be_v encourage_v in_o worship_n but_o as_o for_o other_o who_o do_v worship_n god_n in_o a_o formal_a way_n their_o worship_n will_v prove_v to_o be_v tedious_a to_o they_o for_o they_o perform_v the_o duty_n but_o do_v not_o find_v god_n in_o the_o duty_n in_o that_o spiritual_a way_n as_o the_o saint_n do_v if_o they_o think_v they_o meet_v with_o god_n it_o be_v but_o a_o imagination_n rather_o than_o any_o real_a meeting_n with_o he_o they_o do_v not_o find_v the_o influence_n of_o god_n in_o their_o soul_n in_o holy_a duty_n so_o as_o those_o do_v that_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n here_o than_o you_o see_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n now_o then_o for_o the_o application_n of_o all_o this_o 1_o if_o all_o this_o which_o you_o have_v hear_v be_v require_v of_o we_o for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n hence_o we_o see_v how_o little_a cause_n we_o have_v to_o rest_v upon_o any_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o we_o do_v perform_v certain_o the_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o we_o perform_v be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v rest_v upon_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n and_o yet_o for_o the_o most_o part_n there_o be_v scarce_o any_o thing_n that_o people_n have_v to_o rest_v upon_o or_o to_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n for_o acception_n to_o eternal_a life_n but_o only_o their_o prayer_n and_o their_o come_n to_o hear_v and_o receive_v of_o the_o communion_n and_o such_o duty_n that_o they_o perform_v this_o be_v all_o they_o have_v to_o tender_v up_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n perhaps_o they_o may_v sometime_o speak_v of_o christ_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v that_o which_o their_o heart_n rest_v upon_o for_o acceptation_n to_o eternal_a life_n be_v this_o and_o be_v it_o but_o this_o it_o be_v a_o weak_a prop_n a_o rot_a reed_n that_o thou_o have_v to_o rest_v upon_o let_v the_o duty_n of_o worship_n be_v perform_v never_o so_o well_o suppose_v we_o do_v sanctify_v god_n name_n to_o the_o uttermost_a that_o be_v possible_a for_o any_o creature_n to_o do_v in_o this_o world_n yet_o such_o duty_n be_v not_o to_o be_v rest_v upon_o abraham_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n and_o the_o apostle_n the_o most_o holy_a man_n that_o ever_o do_v perform_v duty_n in_o the_o most_o holy_a manner_n yet_o woe_n to_o they_o if_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o rest_v upon_o but_o their_o duty_n consider_v therefore_o of_o this_o that_o what_o thou_o must_v rest_v upon_o for_o acceptation_n to_o eternal_a life_n it_o must_v be_v that_o that_o must_v have_v so_o much_o worth_n in_o it_o as_o must_v satisfy_v for_o all_o thy_o sin_n that_o former_o thou_o have_v commit_v yea_o and_o for_o all_o the_o sin_n that_o ever_o thou_o shall_v commit_v now_o i_o appeal_v unto_o any_o one_o conscience_n be_v that_o which_o thou_o perform_v as_o prayer_n or_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n or_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n such_o a_o work_n as_o in_o thy_o conscience_n thou_o can_v think_v it_o have_v so_o much_o worth_n in_o it_o as_o to_o satisfy_v god_n for_o all_o the_o sin_n that_o ever_o thou_o do_v or_o shall_v commit_v i_o be_o persuade_v if_o people_n that_o have_v rest_v upon_o duty_n heretofore_o will_v but_o serious_o have_v this_o thought_n in_o their_o mind_n that_o i_o must_v rest_v upon_o nothing_o for_o my_o acceptation_n for_o life_n and_o salvation_n but_o that_o that_o must_v have_v such_o worth_n in_o it_o as_o to_o satisfy_v god_n for_o all_o my_o sin_n that_o ever_o have_v be_v commit_v or_o shall_v be_v commit_v this_o will_v take_v they_o off_o for_o ever_o from_o rest_v in_o duty_n yea_o and_o it_o must_v be_v such_o as_o must_v be_v the_o object_n of_o the_o infinite_a holiness_n of_o god_n to_o take_v content_a in_o sure_o the_o duty_n that_o we_o perform_v be_v no_o such_o duty_n to_o rest_n upon_o the_o truth_n be_v if_o we_o will_v serious_o consider_v what_o they_o be_v as_o they_o come_v from_o we_o we_o will_v even_o abhor_v ourselves_o in_o dust_n and_o ash_n and_o account_v of_o they_o as_o the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o his_o own_o righteousness_n as_o menstruous_a clothes_n they_o be_v such_o as_o if_o god_n shall_v deal_v with_o we_o as_o just_o he_o may_v do_v he_o may_v cast_v they_o and_o we_o to_o the_o dog_n for_o they_o be_v as_o the_o prophet_n say_v tear_v and_o rend_v sacrifice_n now_o if_o a_o man_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n shall_v bring_v to_o the_o lord_n a_o sacrifice_n that_o be_v all_o tear_v and_o perform_v be_v of_o themselves_o such_o as_o be_v tear_v by_o our_o beastly_a lust_n many_o time_n how_o many_o be_v there_o that_o bring_v sacrifice_n to_o god_n that_o be_v as_o a_o carrion_n that_o swine_n have_v be_v tear_v before_o hand_n and_o yet_o these_o be_v the_o sacrifice_n that_o they_o bring_v to_o god_n and_o not_o only_o think_v that_o god_n shall_v accept_v of_o they_o but_o they_o do_v rest_n upon_o they_o for_o their_o acceptation_n to_o eternal_a life_n

strength_n be_v able_a to_o carry_v thou_o on_o in_o and_o therefore_o act_v thy_o faith_n upon_o jesus_n christ_n every_o time_n thou_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n not_o only_o as_o i_o say_v before_o to_o tender_v up_o thy_o service_n in_o his_o name_n but_o act_v thy_o faith_n upon_o christ_n to_o give_v thou_o strength_n to_o do_v what_o thou_o have_v to_o do_v and_o what_o strength_n and_o so_o for_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n or_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o this_o will_v further_o thou_o mighty_o for_o the_o sanctify_a the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n but_o now_o duty_n that_o thou_o do_v perform_v he_o will_v manifest_v it_o one_o way_n or_o other_o that_o he_o be_v a_o holy_a god_n and_o he_o do_v not_o accept_v of_o such_o unholy_a thing_n as_o thou_o do_v tender_a up_o to_o he_o for_o the_o truth_n be_v if_o god_n shall_v accept_v of_o such_o unholy_a thing_n from_o man_n god_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v like_a unto_o themselves_o as_o a_o man_n if_o he_o do_v entertain_v any_o as_o his_o familiar_a friend_n that_o be_v naught_o and_o wicked_a it_o be_v his_o disgrace_n and_o dishonour_n a_o man_n may_v sometime_o employ_v in_o some_o business_n those_o that_o be_v naught_o and_o wicked_a and_o it_o may_v be_v no_o disgrace_n to_o he_o but_o if_o he_o do_v entertain_v one_o in_o his_o house_n that_o be_v wicked_a it_o be_v a_o dishonour_n to_o he_o so_o god_n may_v employ_v the_o most_o wicked_a man_n in_o the_o world_n in_o some_o outward_a service_n but_o if_o he_o shall_v accept_v of_o they_o in_o his_o worship_n it_o will_v be_v a_o dishonour_n to_o god_n and_o therefore_o god_n that_o he_o may_v sanctify_v his_o own_o name_n he_o will_v manifest_v his_o displeasure_n at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o against_o such_o duty_n of_o worship_n you_o that_o perform_v worship_n in_o a_o formal_a manner_n and_o with_o unclean_a vile_a heart_n i_o say_v it_o stand_v upon_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n if_o he_o will_v manifest_v himself_o a_o holy_a god_n he_o must_v manifest_v some_o dipleasure_n against_o that_o way_n of_o thy_o worship_v of_o he_o this_o one_o meditation_n one_o will_v think_v shall_v mighty_o sink_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o any_o man_n that_o have_v a_o enlighten_v conscience_n to_o think_v thus_o it_o stand_v upon_o the_o holiness_n of_o god_n and_o he_o can_v appear_v to_o be_v a_o holy_a first_o be_v secret_a but_o afterward_o it_o will_v appear_v more_o apparent_o and_o we_o see_v it_o by_o experience_n that_o such_o as_o have_v be_v professor_n of_o religion_n and_o worship_n god_n in_o hypocrisy_n and_o in_o formality_n they_o have_v be_v blast_v in_o their_o part_n and_o common_a gift_n the_o judgement_n of_o god_n upon_o nadab_n and_o abihu_n that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_v it_o be_v secret_a at_o first_o it_o strike_v they_o dead_a and_o though_o by_o fire_n yet_o if_o you_o read_v the_o story_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o their_o clothes_n be_v not_o burn_v and_o yet_o they_o be_v burn_v in_o their_o body_n so_o the_o lord_n sometime_o do_v blast_v man_n inward_o in_o their_o spirit_n in_o their_o soul_n in_o their_o part_n in_o their_o common_a gift_n he_o blast_v they_o i_o say_v inward_o though_o it_o do_v not_o appear_v outward_o yet_o at_o length_n it_o will_v appear_v before_o man_n that_o they_o be_v blast_v and_o in_o these_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o lord_n do_v come_v with_o spiritual_a judgement_n rather_o than_o with_o outward_a temporal_a judgement_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n those_o that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n the_o lord_n do_v appear_v by_o some_o external_a and_o visible_a way_n upon_o their_o body_n but_o now_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n there_o god_n come_v with_o more_o spiritual_a judgement_n upon_o man_n soul_n and_o those_o be_v the_o most_o terrible_a judgement_n we_o have_v a_o notable_a scripture_n for_o this_o in_o isa_n 29.13_o how_o god_n do_v blast_v those_o that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v his_o name_n in_o holy_a duty_n wherefore_o the_o lord_n say_v forasmuch_o as_o this_o people_n draw_v near_o i_o with_o their_o mouth_n and_o with_o their_o lip_n do_v honour_n i_o but_o have_v remove_v their_o heart_n far_o from_o i_o and_o their_o fear_n towards_o i_o be_v teach_v by_o the_o precept_n of_o man_n mark_v what_o follow_v therefore_o behold_v i_o will_v proceed_v to_o do_v a_o marvellous_a work_n among_o this_o people_n even_o a_o marvellous_a work_n and_o a_o wonder_n for_o the_o wisdom_n of_o their_o according_a to_o the_o precept_n of_o man_n in_o a_o formal_a way_n and_o so_o all_o hypocrite_n and_o formal_a worshipper_n the_o lord_n do_v blast_v they_o in_o one_o way_n or_o other_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n be_v sometime_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n but_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n there_o we_o find_v general_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n to_o be_v more_o spiritual_a upon_o the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n of_o man_n we_o find_v it_o by_o experience_n god_n do_v discover_v that_o he_o do_v not_o accept_v of_o such_o as_o those_o be_v and_o therefore_o when_o you_o see_v any_o that_o have_v make_v profession_n of_o religion_n that_o have_v excellent_a part_n at_o first_o many_o common_a gift_n and_o now_o be_v as_o we_o say_v no_o body_n remember_v this_o text_n that_o god_n will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o those_o that_o come_v nigh_o he_o second_o the_o lord_n do_v manifest_a that_o he_o will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o those_o that_o draw_v nigh_o he_o by_o awake_v their_o conscience_n many_o time_n upon_o their_o sick_a bed_n and_o death_n bed_n the_o lord_n do_v force_v they_o to_o give_v glory_n to_o he_o and_o there_o to_o acknowledge_v that_o they_o do_v not_o worship_n god_n in_o uprightness_n but_o in_o formality_n and_o now_o they_o be_v in_o horror_n of_o conscience_n and_o cry_v out_o in_o the_o anguish_n of_o their_o soul_n upon_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o dreadful_a wrath_n of_o god_n that_o be_v upon_o they_o take_v heed_n for_o the_o lord_n sake_n of_o this_o thing_n when_o you_o be_v perform_v of_o the_o duty_n of_o worship_n do_v not_o rest_v in_o the_o outward_a duty_n for_o they_o will_v never_o comfort_v you_o upon_o your_o sick_a and_o death_n bed_n you_o may_v perhaps_o put_v off_o your_o conscience_n a_o little_a for_o the_o present_a but_o when_o you_o come_v upon_o your_o sick_a bed_n there_o will_v be_v no_o comfort_n unto_o you_o and_o then_o you_o will_v be_v force_v to_o say_v well_o all_o this_o while_n i_o have_v but_o take_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a and_o now_o god_n have_v reject_v i_o and_o all_o my_o service_n and_o you_o will_v then_o speak_v to_o those_o that_o come_v about_o your_o bed_n side_n and_o bid_v they_o take_v warning_n by_o you_o take_v heed_n that_o when_o you_o worship_n god_n you_o worship_v he_o to_o purpose_n i_o have_v spend_v time_n in_o prayer_n and_o hear_v but_o for_o want_v of_o this_o i_o find_v i_o have_v no_o comfort_n at_o all_o but_o the_o lord_n appear_v to_o be_v terrible_a to_o my_o soul_n and_o they_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o make_v conscience_n of_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o duty_n god_n care_v not_o to_o sanctify_v any_o thing_n for_o thy_o good_a but_o now_o those_o that_o make_v conscience_n of_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o holy_a duty_n the_o lord_n take_v care_n that_o all_o thing_n shall_v be_v sanctify_v for_o their_o good_a for_o the_o furtherance_n of_o their_o grass_n what_o will_v become_v of_o it_o the_o ground_n must_v first_o be_v plough_v for_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o seed_n but_o you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o plow_a of_o our_o heart_n for_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o word_n the_o meaning_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o this_o the_o work_n of_o humiliation_n the_o humble_v of_o the_o soul_n before_o the_o lord_n when_o it_o do_v come_v to_o hear_v god_n word_n humble_v it_o in_o these_o two_o regard_n first_o be_v humble_v for_o your_o ignorance_n that_o you_o know_v so_o little_a of_o god_n mind_n as_o you_o do_v second_o be_v humble_v for_o all_o the_o sinfulness_n of_o your_o heart_n be_v sensible_a of_o the_o sinfulness_n and_o wretchedness_n of_o your_o heart_n and_o the_o miserable_a conditon_n that_o you_o be_v in_o if_o you_o can_v get_v your_o heart_n break_v with_o the_o sense_n of_o your_o sin_n and_o misery_n and_o come_v so_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n it_o be_v very_o like_o the_o word_n may_v be_v of_o mighty_a use_n and_o god_n name_n may_v be_v very_o much_o sanctify_v in_o your_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n you_o will_v say_v must_v we_o plough_v up_o our_o heart_n before_o we_o come_v to_o hear_v it_o must_v be_v the_o word_n that_o must_v plough_v we_o the_o word_n be_v the_o plough_n and_o so_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n be_v compare_v to_o plowman_n in_o the_o word_n he_o that_o put_v his_o hand_n to_o the_o plough_n and_o look_n back_o be_v not_o fit_a for_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n it_o be_v true_a it_o can_v be_v expect_v that_o the_o heart_n shall_v be_v thorough_o plough_v as_o it_o ought_v but_o by_o the_o word_n therefore_o at_o the_o first_o come_v to_o hear_v there_o be_v not_o hope_v that_o man_n will_v sanctify_v god_n name_n somewhat_o may_v be_v do_v before_o by_o that_o natural_a knowledge_n that_o man_n have_v they_o may_v come_v to_o know_v themselves_o to_o be_v sinner_n and_o come_v to_o understand_v themselves_o to_o be_v very_o weak_a and_o ignorant_a by_o some_o knowledge_n that_o they_o may_v have_v by_o the_o work_n of_o god_n and_o by_o conference_n with_o other_o and_o by_o read_v and_o the_o like_a and_o so_o they_o may_v in_o some_o measure_n come_v to_o have_v their_o heart_n to_o be_v humble_v and_o it_o be_v good_a to_o make_v use_n of_o there_o to_o humble_v the_o heart_n but_o now_o you_o that_o have_v hear_v the_o word_n often_o and_o yet_o have_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n there_o be_v truth_n that_o you_o have_v hear_v heretofore_o that_o if_o you_o have_v make_v use_n of_o in_o private_a to_o have_v plough_v up_o your_o heart_n they_o will_v have_v prepare_v your_o heart_n for_o the_o next_o time_n in_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n if_o therefore_o you_o will_v hear_v the_o than_o these_o that_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n and_o yet_o they_o have_v not_o this_o honest_a heart_n yea_o they_o may_v hear_v the_o word_n so_o as_o to_o bring_v forth_o a_o blade_n and_o yet_o nor_o have_v this_o honest_a heart_n by_o this_o honest_a heart_n i_o take_v therefore_o to_o be_v mean_v this_o a_o heart_n that_o deal_v square_o and_o true_o with_o god_n behave_v itself_o in_o a_o beseem_a manner_n suitable_a to_o that_o authority_n and_o excellency_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o now_o for_o example_n 1_o first_o among_o man_n he_o be_v account_v a_o honest_a man_n that_o deal_v square_o and_o true_o with_o man_n in_o all_o action_n such_o a_o man_n you_o will_v say_v be_v a_o honest_a man_n as_o honest_a a_o man_n as_o ever_o break_v bread_n that_o be_v one_o that_o will_v deal_v square_o with_o man_n not_o only_o in_o one_o thing_n but_o turn_v he_o to_o any_o thing_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v a_o proportion_n man_n put_v he_o upon_o any_o easy_a service_n as_o many_o will_v embrace_v that_o or_o put_v he_o upon_o a_o difficult_a service_n it_o be_v all_o one_o if_o it_o be_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n you_o the_o word_n of_o that_o god_n with_o who_o he_o have_v to_o deal_v that_o look_v what_o excellency_n what_o glory_n there_o be_v
examine_v themselves_o then_o certain_o such_o only_a as_o be_v godly_a be_v to_o come_v for_o they_o only_o can_v perform_v those_o act_n that_o be_v require_v four_o it_o be_v a_o sacrament_n of_o communion_n with_o god_n and_o communion_n with_o the_o saint_n now_o what_o communion_n have_v light_a and_o darkness_n or_o what_o fellowship_n have_v christ_n with_o belial_n if_o it_o be_v a_o sacrament_n of_o communion_n of_o come_v to_o the_o table_n of_o god_n will_v god_n have_v his_o enemy_n come_v to_o his_o table_n you_o will_v invite_v no_o enemy_n to_o your_o table_n but_o your_o child_n and_o friend_n so_o they_o must_v be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o the_o friend_n of_o god_n these_o that_o be_v reconcile_v to_o god_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o his_o son_n and_o those_o that_o be_v his_o child_n that_o must_v sit_v at_o his_o table_n therefore_o they_o must_v be_v holy_a now_o this_o may_v suffice_v for_o that_o first_o thing_n that_o this_o be_v not_o a_o ordinance_n for_o all_o sort_n of_o people_n but_o such_o as_o have_v submit_v to_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n before_o such_o as_o have_v grace_n and_o ability_n to_o examine_v themselves_o of_o their_o grace_n and_o such_o as_o be_v child_n and_o reconcile_v to_o god_n and_o so_o be_v fit_a to_o fit_v at_o the_o table_n of_o god_n and_o to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o he_o and_o with_o his_o son_n and_o with_o the_o saint_n for_o we_o be_v one_o body_n sacramental_o when_o we_o come_v to_o this_o holy_a ordinance_n all_o other_o therefore_o certain_o be_v to_o be_v keep_v from_o this_o sacrament_n but_o such_o 2_o the_o second_o thing_n will_v make_v it_o out_o more_o full_o and_o that_o be_v it_o be_v not_o enough_o that_o we_o be_v holy_a ourselves_o and_o we_o bless_v be_v it_o not_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n the_o bread_n which_o we_o break_v be_v it_o not_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n and_o than_o say_v the_o apostle_n in_o the_o 17._o verse_n for_o we_o be_v many_o be_v one_o bread_n and_o one_o body_n therefore_o all_o that_o come_v to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n they_o must_v so_o come_v as_o they_o must_v be_v one_o body_n one_o spiritual_a corporation_n this_o very_a consideration_n that_o those_o with_o who_o we_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n be_v one_o body_n with_o we_o it_o have_v what_o if_o wicked_a man_n do_v come_v there_o will_v that_o hinder_v we_o from_o sanctify_a god_n name_n in_o partake_v of_o the_o sacrament_n with_o they_o do_v not_o we_o find_v in_o scripture_n that_o the_o church_n have_v always_o wicked_a man_n among_o they_o there_o be_v always_o tare_n grow_v up_o with_o the_o wheat_n if_o you_o read_v even_o in_o the_o corinthian_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o there_o be_v some_o in_o that_o church_n that_o be_v wicked_a yea_o and_o it_o be_v think_v that_o judas_n himself_o do_v receive_v the_o sacrament_n too_o therefore_o what_o if_o wicked_a and_o if_o they_o do_v not_o yet_o reform_v than_o you_o be_v bind_v to_o tell_v the_o church_n to_o tell_v the_o assembly_n of_o the_o saint_n when_o they_o meet_v together_o for_o so_o the_o word_n church_n do_v signify_v and_o we_o find_v in_o the_o 1_o cor._n 5._o chap._n that_o when_o there_o be_v a_o incestuous_a person_n to_o be_v cast_v out_o it_o be_v do_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o congregation_n thus_o far_o you_o be_v bind_v to_o do_v otherwise_o you_o can_v say_v that_o it_o be_v nothing_o to_o you_o if_o wicked_a man_n be_v there_o for_o you_o have_v not_o discharge_v your_o conscience_n and_o so_o you_o come_v to_o be_v defile_v and_o you_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o this_o ordinance_n because_o you_o have_v not_o do_v to_o the_o uttermost_a of_o your_o duty_n for_o the_o cast_v out_o of_o those_o wicked_a man_n and_o mark_v in_o 2_o cor._n 5.7_o there_o the_o apostle_n write_v to_o the_o church_n bid_v they_o that_o they_o shall_v purge_v out_o we_o do_v not_o do_v it_o as_o in_o all_o communion_n of_o saint_n there_o be_v a_o duty_n and_o there_o be_v not_o any_o one_o but_o may_v do_v something_o towards_o it_o thus_o far_o every_o communicant_a in_o every_o communion_n of_o saint_n must_v go_v if_o there_o be_v a_o wicked_a man_n there_o if_o you_o come_v to_o know_v it_o and_o do_v not_o go_v thus_o far_o as_o i_o have_v speak_v you_o be_v defile_v by_o he_o you_o be_v not_o defile_v by_o the_o mere_a presence_n of_o wicked_a man_n for_o that_o be_v a_o mere_a deceit_n and_o gall_n that_o some_o will_v put_v upon_o man_n that_o differ_v from_o they_o otherwise_o but_o thus_o now_o you_o be_v defile_v by_o their_o presence_n if_o you_o do_v not_o do_v your_o duty_n and_o the_o uttermost_a that_o you_o be_v able_a not_o do_v their_o duty_n as_o they_o ought_v yet_o then_o to_o free_v their_o own_o soul_n as_o to_o profess_v here_o be_v one_o that_o be_v so_o and_o so_o guilty_a and_o may_v be_v prove_v thus_o and_o thus_o and_o so_o for_o my_o part_n i_o to_o free_v my_o own_o soul_n profess_v that_o this_o man_n or_o woman_n ought_v not_o to_o have_v communion_n here_o and_o thus_o you_o come_v to_o free_v your_o own_o soul_n and_o when_o you_o have_v do_v thus_o though_o wicked_a man_n be_v there_o you_o may_v there_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o not_o be_v defile_v by_o their_o presence_n for_o you_o can_v be_v say_v proper_o to_o eat_v with_o they_o now_o not_o to_o have_v communion_n with_o they_o no_o more_o than_o if_o a_o dog_n shall_v come_v and_o skip_v upon_o the_o table_n and_o take_v a_o pice_n of_o bread_n you_o can_v have_v communion_n with_o he_o because_o he_o take_v it_o no_o
not_o see_v how_o christ_n be_v under_o those_o element_n both_o represent_v and_o exhibit_v unto_o they_o that_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n there_o must_v be_v knowledge_n and_o understanding_n and_o now_o for_o the_o knowledge_n and_o understanding_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o sacrament_n there_o need_v be_v knowledge_n in_o other_o point_n of_o religion_n for_o we_o can_v never_o come_v to_o understand_v the_o nature_n of_o this_o sacrament_n without_o know_v god_n and_o know_v ourselves_o know_v in_o what_o estate_n we_o be_v by_o nature_n know_v our_o fall_n know_v the_o way_n of_o redemption_n know_v jesus_n christ_n what_o he_o be_v and_o what_o he_o have_v do_v for_o the_o make_n of_o a_o atonement_n the_o necessity_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o what_o the_o way_n of_o the_o covenant_n be_v that_o god_n have_v appoint_v to_o bring_v man_n soul_n to_o eternal_a life_n by_o the_o main_a point_n of_o religion_n must_v be_v know_v but_o especial_o that_o that_o concern_v the_o nature_n of_o a_o sacrament_n now_o this_o knowledge_n likewise_o must_v be_v actual_a not_o mere_o habitual_a knowledge_n but_o there_o must_v be_v a_o stir_v up_o of_o this_o knowledge_n that_o be_v by_o meditation_n i_o must_v be_v meditate_v have_v actual_a thought_n and_o meditation_n of_o what_o ido_n know_v that_o aught_o to_o be_v the_o work_n of_o a_o christian_a in_o come_v to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n to_o quicken_v up_o his_o knowledge_n to_o have_v a_o renew_a work_n of_o his_o knowledge_n by_o actual_a thought_n and_o meditation_n of_o the_o main_a point_n of_o religion_n and_o especial_o of_o the_o nature_n and_o the_o end_n of_o this_o holy_a institution_n that_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n second_o as_o we_o must_v come_v understand_o without_o which_o we_o can_v sanctify_v god_n name_n so_o we_o must_v come_v with_o heart_n suitable_a to_o the_o work_n that_o we_o be_v about_o that_o be_v because_o the_o great_a thing_n that_o be_v here_o be_v the_o break_n of_o christ_n body_n and_o the_o pour_v forth_o his_o blood_n a_o suitable_a disposition_n to_o this_o be_v brokenness_n of_o heart_n sense_n of_o our_o sin_n of_o that_o dreadful_a breach_n that_o sin_n have_v make_v between_o god_n and_o the_o soul_n our_o sin_n shall_v be_v upon_o our_o heart_n so_o as_o to_o break_v they_o but_o this_o brokenness_n must_v be_v evangelical_n it_o must_v be_v through_o the_o apply_v of_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n unto_o my_o soul_n i_o must_v come_v to_o be_v sensible_a of_o my_o sin_n but_o especial_o be_v sensible_a of_o it_o by_o the_o heart_n in_o a_o evangelical_n way_n in_o a_o gracious_a way_n the_o main_a thing_n by_o which_o the_o soul_n must_v come_v to_o break_v its_o heart_n must_v the_o behold_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n in_o the_o red_a glass_n of_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n the_o behold_v he_o break_v and_o true_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o world_n that_o have_v that_o power_n to_o break_v the_o heart_n for_o sin_n as_o the_o behold_n of_o that_o which_o be_v to_o be_v behold_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o that_o heart_n be_v a_o hard_a heart_n that_o can_v see_v what_o be_v there_o to_o be_v see_v and_o not_o break_v in_o the_o apprehension_n of_o sin_n when_o i_o here_o see_v what_o my_o sin_n cost_n what_o a_o price_n be_v make_v for_o my_o soul_n when_o i_o see_v speak_v of_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n he_o say_v that_o christ_n be_v crucify_v before_o those_o that_o do_v hear_v the_o word_n and_o foolish_a galatian_n who_o have_v bewitch_v you_o the_o wickedness_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n natural_o and_o so_o all_o unregenerate_a man_n they_o will_v think_v you_o speak_v strange_a riddle_n whereas_o they_o bless_v themselves_o they_o bless_v god_n they_o know_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o their_o heart_n no_o yes_o there_o be_v such_o thing_n only_o they_o be_v not_o stir_v but_o they_o lie_v quiet_a as_o mud_n resolve_v with_o ourselves_o well_o whatsoever_o fall_v out_o this_o morning_n i_o be_o resolve_v i_o will_v bear_v it_o so_o bethink_v thyself_o how_o many_o prayer_n thou_o have_v lose_v by_o vain_a
