as_o we_o read_v of_o paul_n 1_o cor._n 9_o 27._o the_o text_n say_v he_o beat_v down_o his_o body_n lest_o after_o he_o have_v preach_v unto_o other_o he_o himself_o shall_v be_v a_o reprobate_n not_o to_o afflict_v ourselves_o as_o papist_n to_o be_v whip_v ourselves_o and_o to_o do_v those_o thing_n that_o god_n never_o aequire_v at_o our_o hand_n but_o so_o far_o as_o any_o way_n god_n shall_v require_v it_o such_o a_o one_o be_v willing_a to_o afflict_v itself_o before_o the_o lord_n the_o main_a work_n of_o the_o heart_n in_o this_o thing_n be_v that_o it_o be_v not_o solicitous_a so_o much_o for_o comfort_n as_o to_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v afflict_v before_o the_o lord_n so_o far_o as_o god_n will_v have_v it_o afflict_v so_o now_o put_v all_o these_o together_o and_o you_o may_v see_v the_o behaviour_n of_o a_o lowly_a heart_n in_o respect_n of_o itself_o 1._o it_o be_v suspicious_a of_o itself_o jealous_a lest_o theâ—e_n shall_v be_v some_o secret_a evil_n in_o the_o heart_n that_o it_o do_v nor_o know_v of_o 2._o it_o be_v willing_a to_o know_v the_o worst_a of_o itself_o 3._o it_o look_v often_o to_o its_o poor_a beginning_n 4._o it_o be_v ashamed_a of_o itself_o and_o thâ—t_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o its_o own_o excellency_n 5._o it_o loathe_v and_o abhor_v itself_o before_o the_o lord_n 6._o it_o judge_v itself_o 7._o it_o deny_v itself_o 8._o it_o keep_v down_o itself_o 9_o it_o hidâ—â—_n itself_o 10._o it_o go_v out_o of_o itself_o and_o empty_v itself_o 11._o it_o bemoan_v itself_o and_o last_o it_o afflict_v itself_o so_o that_o your_o heart_n now_o have_v these_o working_n in_o they_o in_o reference_n to_o yourselves_o you_o may_v by_o this_o examine_v whether_o you_o have_v humble_a and_z lowly_a heart_n yea_o or_o no._n chap._n cxxv_o three_o consequence_n from_o the_o former_a point_n and_o from_o all_o these_o thing_n there_o be_v these_o three_o consequence_n consequence_n 1._o first_n here_o you_o may_v see_v how_o to_o examine_v your_o own_o heart_n in_o respect_n of_o humility_n whether_o you_o find_v these_o working_n of_o a_o humble_a spirit_n in_o respect_n of_o yourselves_o lay_v these_o and_o your_o heart_n level_v examine_v and_o call_v your_o heart_n to_o a_o account_n when_o you_o get_v alone_o by_o these_o twelve_o forego_v particular_n ask_v thyself_o as_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n be_v my_o heart_n thus_o have_v i_o this_o lowly_a heart_n christ_n will_v have_v i_o of_o a_o lowly_a heart_n thus_o if_o you_o can_v find_v these_o charge_v yourselves_o with_o the_o want_n of_o they_o and_o take_v a_o advantage_n even_o from_o the_o want_n of_o they_o to_o humble_v your_o heart_n before_o the_o lord_n because_o you_o have_v not_o these_o thing_n that_o be_v the_o genuine_a and_o natural_a working_n of_o a_o humble_a spirit_n for_o so_o they_o be_v if_o you_o can_v find_v your_o heart_n come_v off_o in_o in_o these_o particular_n in_o a_o natural_a way_n from_o a_o renew_a nature_n you_o may_v have_v abundance_n of_o comfort_n that_o this_o grace_n of_o humility_n of_o lowliness_n that_o christ_n will_v have_v you_o learn_v be_v wrought_v in_o your_o soul_n you_o have_v be_v a_o proficient_a in_o christ_n school_n but_o many_o may_v have_v cause_n upon_o the_o hear_n of_o this_o to_o charge_v themselves_o with_o this_o that_o they_o scarce_o have_v begin_v to_o learn_v in_o the_o school_n of_o christ_n to_o learn_v humility_n consequence_n 2._o second_o another_o consequence_n be_v this_o upon_o the_o consideration_n of_o these_o several_a working_n of_o humility_n in_o respect_n of_o ourselves_o we_o may_v see_v that_o the_o work_n of_o a_o christian_a be_v very_o much_o inward_a it_o be_v a_o work_n of_o reflection_n upon_o ourselves_o if_o there_o be_v nothing_o to_o do_v in_o a_o christian_n life_n but_o that_o that_o be_v external_a to_o perform_v some_o outward_a duty_n to_o come_v and_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o speak_v good_a thing_n and_o pray_v and_o make_v a_o outward_a profession_n the_o life_n of_o a_o christian_a be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o easy_a but_o from_o this_o that_o you_o hear_v from_o the_o work_n of_o this_o one_o grace_n of_o humility_n you_o may_v see_v that_o the_o work_n of_o a_o christian_a lie_n much_o within_o door_n that_o christian_n shall_v be_v very_o busy_a within_o their_o heart_n there_o be_v many_o working_n within_o rather_o then_o without_o and_o therefore_o if_o you_o will_v profess_v yourselves_o to_o be_v christian_n and_o will_v indeed_o have_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o your_o heart_n you_o must_v work_v â—uch_o inward_o there_o must_v be_v much_o reflection_n upon_o your_o own_o heart_n consequence_n 3._o three_o and_o last_o another_o consequence_n be_v this_o by_o this_o that_o you_o have_v hear_v what_o the_o work_n of_o a_o humble_a heart_n in_o respect_n of_o itself_o be_v we_o may_v take_v notice_n of_o the_o great_a power_n of_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a wheresoever_o grace_n be_v wrought_v jesus_n christ_n be_v very_o powerful_a and_o very_a strong_a in_o that_o heart_n certain_o these_o thing_n can_v never_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o poor_a wretched_a sinner_n yea_o in_o a_o heart_n that_o be_v natural_o very_o proud_a for_o so_o we_o be_v all_o and_o be_v not_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n very_o powerful_a in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a these_o thing_n can_v never_o be_v wherefore_o when_o you_o hear_v that_o these_o thing_n be_v in_o a_o heart_n work_v thus_o we_o may_v conclude_v sure_o the_o power_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v very_o mighty_a and_o very_o strong_a well_o thus_o you_o have_v the_o grace_n of_o humility_n present_v to_o you_o towards_o god_n and_o yourselves_o let_v we_o learn_v to_o be_v of_o lowly_a heart_n and_o be_v not_o at_o rest_n until_o you_o find_v these_o kind_n of_o working_n in_o your_o spirit_n chap._n cxxvi_o the_o first_o property_n of_o humility_n in_o respect_n of_o uther_n be_v that_o it_o think_v better_a of_o other_o than_o itself_o which_o be_v lay_v open_a in_o divers_a particular_a answer_n unto_o several_a doubt_n and_o objection_n there_o be_v yet_o one_o of_o these_o three_o thing_n to_o be_v speak_v unto_o in_o this_o grace_n of_o humility_n which_o be_v the_o three_o particular_a what_o the_o behaviour_n of_o a_o humble_a heart_n be_v in_o reference_n unto_o other_o for_o humility_n much_o appear_v in_o that_o though_o the_o principal_a work_n in_o humility_n be_v in_o the_o carriage_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o reference_n unto_o god_n and_o in_o reference_n unto_o itself_o yet_o there_o be_v very_o much_o in_o this_o grace_n of_o humility_n in_o the_o carriage_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o reference_n unto_o our_o brethren_n now_o than_o the_o first_o thing_n wherein_o the_o behaviour_n of_o a_o humble_a heart_n be_v in_o reference_n unto_o other_o and_o a_o principal_a thing_n it_o be_v of_o very_o great_a concernment_n and_o that_o be_v this_o first_o it_o think_v better_a of_o other_o than_o itself_o this_o great_a work_n of_o humility_n that_o have_v very_o much_o in_o it_o as_o i_o shall_v show_v in_o open_v of_o it_o be_v hold_v forth_o unto_o you_o in_o 2_o of_o phillipian_o 3_o verse_n let_v nothing_o be_v do_v through_o strife_n or_o vain_a glory_n but_o in_o lowliness_n of_o mind_n that_o may_v grieve_v they_o now_o christ_n have_v so_o tender_a regard_n unto_o you_o that_o be_v the_o servant_n of_o god_n that_o he_o will_v require_v nothing_o of_o you_o that_o will_v grieve_v be_v the_o difference_n that_o there_o be_v between_o the_o ease_n that_o a_o carnal_a heart_n find_v in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n and_o the_o ease_n that_o a_o true_a gracious_a heart_n find_v in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n those_o that_o be_v carnal_a and_o take_v up_o but_o a_o mere_a formality_n of_o religion_n they_o find_v not_o ease_v but_o those_o that_o be_v true_o religious_a they_o find_v rest_n and_o the_o three_o be_v this_o if_o the_o way_n of_o god_n be_v easy_a how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o many_o that_o we_o hope_v be_v true_o gracious_a and_o godly_a yet_o make_v such_o complaint_n of_o so_o much_o difficulty_n as_o they_o do_v find_v in_o god_n way_n and_o then_o fourthly_a we_o be_v to_o open_v which_o be_v the_o principal_a of_o all_o in_o the_o explication_n wherein_o the_o easiness_n of_o god_n way_n appear_v what_o be_v those_o thing_n that_o do_v make_v the_o way_n of_o god_n so_o easy_a and_o in_o what_o particular_n do_v consist_v the_o easiness_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n and_o then_o five_o some_o consequence_n that_o be_v to_o be_v draw_v from_o this_o which_o be_v by_o way_n of_o application_n and_o sixthly_a and_o last_o some_o direction_n what_o we_o shall_v do_v to_o make_v the_o way_n of_o god_n easy_a these_o be_v the_o six_o head_n that_o i_o cast_v the_o handle_n of_o this_o point_n into_o chap._n cxxxv_o six_o evidence_n of_o the_o former_a doctrine_n in_o the_o last_o chapter_n 1._o because_o the_o word_n that_o enjoin_v these_o way_n be_v sweet_a 2._o a_o gracious_a soul_n count_v his_o duty_n his_o privilege_n 3._o he_o will_v rather_o come_v under_o any_o other_o burden_n than_o cast_v off_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n 4._o because_o christ_n who_o yoke_n it_o be_v be_v have_v indeed_o submit_v their_o neck_n unto_o the_o yoke_n of_o jesus_n christ_n evidence_n 1._o first_o the_o first_o evidence_n be_v this_o sure_o god_n way_n be_v easy_a unto_o they_o for_o will_v not_o be_v sweet_a and_o comfortable_a unto_o the_o soul_n but_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a unto_o a_o gracious_a heart_n than_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o do_v require_v such_o way_n of_o he_o you_o know_v the_o expression_n of_o david_n that_o it_o be_v sweet_a than_o the_o honey_n and_o the_o honey_n comb_n more_o precious_a than_o silver_n or_o gold_n or_o any_o riches_n of_o the_o world_n read_v but_o psal_n 119._o and_o there_o in_o every_o verse_n almost_o you_o find_v such_o expression_n of_o much_o sweetness_n that_o david_n do_v find_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n if_o the_o word_n be_v sweet_a and_o delightful_a certain_o the_o way_n of_o god_n must_v needs_o be_v sweet_a and_o delightful_a that_o be_v require_v in_o the_o word_n that_o be_v the_o first_o evidence_n 2._o second_o sure_o they_o be_v sweet_a and_o delightful_a for_o those_o that_o be_v in_o god_n way_n do_v not_o account_v what_o they_o do_v only_o to_o be_v duty_n but_o privilege_n they_o look_v upon_o every_o thing_n that_o christian_a religion_n require_v of_o they_o not_o only_o as_o duty_n but_o as_o mercy_n as_o that_o wherein_o their_o happiness_n the_o word_n you_o come_v to_o the_o word_n bare_o you_o rise_v out_o of_o your_o bed_n and_o come_v and_o sit_v here_o a_o hour_n that_o be_v easy_a enough_o but_o now_o if_o you_o come_v to_o the_o path_n if_o a_o man_n have_v one_o ledg_n long_o and_o another_o short_a or_o if_o the_o way_n be_v uneven_a sometime_o plain_a sometime_o rugged_a sometime_o down_o hill_n and_o sometime_o uphil_a in_o a_o constant_a evenness_n be_v my_o heart_n so_o than_o i_o shall_v find_v ease_n but_o that_o which_o make_v it_o most_o difficult_a it_o be_v the_o unevenness_n of_o my_o heart_n on_o the_o contrary_a put_v now_o a_o carnal_a heart_n to_o this_o to_o a_o constancy_n in_o any_o duty_n or_o work_n for_o god_n o_o it_o will_v cry_v out_o of_o weariness_n in_o god_n way_n perhaps_o he_o will_v be_v content_a to_o be_v a_o while_n in_o holy_a duty_n to_o hear_v a_o short_a sermon_n and_o go_v away_o again_o but_o to_o spend_v the_o whole_a sabbath_n that_o be_v wearisome_a to_o he_o nay_o perhaps_o he_o can_v be_v content_a to_o keep_v one_o sabbath_n but_o to_o keep_v sabbath_n after_o sabbath_n that_o be_v burdensome_a to_o he_o and_o perhaps_o he_o can_v be_v content_a to_o pray_v one_o morning_n in_o his_o family_n but_o to_o pray_v every_o morning_n and_o every_o night_n and_o to_o go_v on_o from_o morning_n to_o morning_n and_o from_o day_n to_o day_n and_o from_o week_n to_o week_n and_o from_o year_n to_o year_n oh_o this_o be_v wearisome_a true_o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o grudge_n god_n any_o service_n all_o our_o day_n but_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o a_o carnal_a heart_n six_o the_o ease_n that_o a_o carnal_a heart_n have_v it_o be_v in_o his_o remissness_n in_o duty_n in_o the_o remissness_n of_o his_o spirit_n in_o his_o moderation_n that_o he_o plead_v for_o there_o lie_v his_o ease_n but_o for_o the_o other_o the_o extension_n of_o duty_n that_o he_o plead_v not_o for_o you_o shall_v have_v a_o carnal_a heart_n plead_v for_o holy_a duty_n but_o with_o moderation_n we_o must_v be_v moderate_a and_o if_o we_o do_v something_o that_o god_n require_v though_o we_o be_v not_o so_o hot_a and_o fiery_a as_o other_o i_o hope_v it_o be_v well_o enough_o do_v not_o virtue_n consist_v in_o the_o middle_a way_n as_o i_o like_v not_o the_o profaneness_n of_o some_o man_n that_o be_v swearer_n and_o drunkard_n &_o whoremonger_n on_o the_o one_o quite_o otherwise_o with_o a_o carnal_a heart_n when_o he_o plead_v for_o moderation_n this_o virtue_n of_o moderation_n that_o he_o plead_v for_o it_o be_v not_o a_o middle_a of_o participation_n the_o middle_a in_o which_o virtu_n consist_v it_o be_v not_o a_o middle_n that_o do_v participate_v of_o a_o degree_n of_o both_o the_o contrary_n but_o a_o deny_v of_o the_o extreme_n of_o both_o as_o the_o true_a virtue_n of_o liberality_n consist_v not_o between_o prodigality_n and_o covetousness_n but_o deny_v the_o extreme_n of_o both_o it_o will_v have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o either_o of_o both_o the_o etreame_n but_o that_o which_o a_o carnal_a heart_n calâ—_n for_o in_o moderation_n be_v the_o mixture_n of_o both_o extreme_n together_o and_o so_o make_v up_o a_o opposite_a unto_o the_o open_a profaneness_n in_o wickedness_n of_o many_o people_n that_o of_o drunkennhss_n and_o uncleanness_n and_o the_o like_a they_o will_v none_o of_o this_o and_o then_o there_o be_v the_o strictness_n of_o power_n and_o life_n in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n in_o the_o other_o way_n that_o that_o be_v in_o their_o heart_n be_v a_o deadness_n of_o spirit_n there_o be_v a_o mixture_n there_o be_v some_o profaneness_n of_o heart_n though_o they_o will_v have_v somewhat_o of_o religion_n too_o of_o that_o which_o be_v the_o hypocrisy_n not_o the_o power_n of_o profaneness_n of_o heart_n when_o he_o come_v to_o perform_v holy_a duty_n and_o yet_o he_o will_v not_o be_v profane_a neither_o and_o so_o he_o will_v have_v a_o mixture_n of_o both_o and_o this_o make_v up_o a_o civil_a man_n and_o yet_o the_o civil_a man_n will_v cry_v out_o for_o both_o he_o think_v he_o be_v not_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o he_o think_v he_o be_v not_o profane_a but_o he_o be_v a_o middle_a man_n a_o mixture_n of_o a_o profane_a person_n and_o a_o strict_a person_n he_o be_v between_o both_o but_o now_o a_o gracious_a heart_n equal_o oppose_v profaneness_n and_o hypocrisy_n so_o that_o the_o right_a moderation_n be_v such_o a_o moderation_n as_o be_v a_o middle_n between_o two_o evil_n and_o partake_v of_o none_o the_o ease_n of_o a_o carnal_a heart_n lie_v in_o his_o moderation_n of_o holy_a duty_n and_o therefore_o those_o duty_n that_o will_v lift_v up_o the_o heart_n high_a those_o be_v troublesome_a unto_o he_o as_o now_o you_o shall_v find_v in_o some_o beast_n a_o horse_n that_o be_v a_o jade_n and_o tire_a will_v go_v pretty_a well_o in_o some_o smooth_a way_n but_o if_o he_o come_v to_o the_o least_o rise_v of_o a_o hill_n oh_o how_o hard_o be_v his_o spirit_n that_o that_o be_v uphill_o oh_o that_o be_v difficult_a but_o now_o a_o godly_a heart_n be_v lively_a and_o spiritual_a and_o joyful_a and_o find_v most_o quiet_a and_o ease_v when_o he_o rise_v high_a seven_o a_o carnal_a heart_n the_o ease_n that_o it_o have_v in_o god_n way_n it_o be_v all_o a_o like_a aswell_o one_o time_n as_o at_o another_o time_n it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o the_o saint_n they_o have_v ease_n but_o they_o do_v not_o find_v it_o all_o alike_o when_o indeed_o they_o can_v be_v constant_a in_o god_n way_n than_o they_o find_v constant_a ease_n but_o contrary_a principle_n in_o his_o heart_n one_o that_o carry_v he_o one_o way_n and_o another_o that_o carry_v he_o another_o way_n but_o the_o ease_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n be_v this_o that_o the_o power_n of_o god_n grace_n that_o do_v overcome_v his_o corruption_n i_o find_v a_o stir_n in_o my_o heart_n but_o i_o thank_v god_n i_o can_v get_v the_o victory_n the_o ease_n of_o a_o godly_a heart_n come_v from_o the_o victory_n that_o it_o get_v but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o a_o carnal_a heart_n your_o civil_a man_n do_v not_o find_v ease_n from_o their_o victory_n because_o what_o they_o do_v be_v not_o suitable_a to_o they_o but_o a_o godly_a man_n find_v that_o there_o be_v a_o principle_n of_o grace_n that_o oppose_v the_o principle_n of_o lust_n and_o corruption_n and_o therefore_o can_v say_v since_o i_o set_v my_o heart_n towards_o god_n and_o his_o way_n i_o have_v find_v more_o corruption_n than_o before_o stir_v but_o i_o thank_v god_n i_o have_v get_v victory_n then_o find_v god_n grace_n come_v in_o upon_o his_o heart_n to_o help_v he_o against_o that_o corruption_n and_o this_o bring_v ease_n and_o quiet_a to_o he_o ten_o and_o then_o the_o last_o be_v this_o that_o the_o ease_n the_o one_o have_v come_v from_o this_o that_o all_o that_o he_o do_v he_o preforme_v in_o his_o own_o strength_n and_o he_o do_v not_o see_v any_o need_n of_o any_o further_a strength_n than_o that_o which_o he_o have_v in_o himselelf_n to_o enable_v he_o to_o perform_v duty_n and_o so_o he_o find_v ease_v as_o a_o man_n find_v his_o trade_n to_o be_v easy_a if_o he_o trade_v with_o his_o own_o stock_n and_o have_v nothing_o but_o his_o own_o stock_n to_o trade_n with_o and_o trade_n in_o no_o high_a thing_n than_o what_o himself_o can_v reach_v unto_o whereas_o another_o man_n that_o must_v have_v the_o stock_n of_o other_o man_n to_o trade_n with_o find_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o trouble_n that_o see_v his_o trade_n require_v more_o stock_n than_o his_o own_o it_o be_v so_o with_o a_o gracious_a heart_n he_o set_v upon_o duty_n so_o as_o needs_o he_o find_v he_o more_o stock_n than_o his_o own_o his_o trade_n be_v beyond_o his_o own_o strength_n but_o now_o a_o godly_a heart_n when_o he_o come_v to_o want_v strength_n he_o fetch_v strength_n from_o christ_n he_o fetch_v strength_n from_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n he_o fetch_v strength_n from_o the_o promise_n and_o when_o he_o have_v get_v strength_n from_o christ_n from_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n from_o the_o promise_n oh_o now_o he_o find_v rest_n and_o ease_v in_o his_o duty_n and_o you_o shall_v see_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o in_o the_o next_o point_n why_o the_o sant_n find_v difficulty_n many_o time_n they_o will_v think_v to_o be_v trade_v with_o their_o own_o strength_n and_o their_o own_o stock_n whenas_o the_o thing_n they_o trade_v about_o be_v beyond_o their_o own_o strength_n but_o now_o when_o they_o can_v look_v high_o and_o see_v a_o fullness_n in_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o mediator_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n and_o of_o his_o fullness_n we_o must_v receive_v grace_n for_o grace_n and_o fetch_v strength_n from_o this_o oh_o then_o here_o be_v quiet_a and_o ease_n when_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o trade_n with_o another_o stock_n observe_v this_o you_o will_v find_v it_o as_o certain_a as_o can_v be_v all_o those_o that_o be_v mere_a civil_a people_n that_o find_v it_o so_o easy_a to_o go_v on_o in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n they_o be_v never_o sensible_a of_o any_o need_n they_o have_v of_o any_o more_o strength_n than_o their_o own_o whereas_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n be_v heavy_a than_o any_o natural_a strength_n be_v able_a to_o bear_v and_o therefore_o if_o you_o find_v ease_n in_o that_o you_o have_v strength_n of_o your_o own_o to_o perform_v it_o certain_o it_o be_v not_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n but_o now_o when_o you_o find_v your_o own_o strength_n too_o short_a when_o you_o go_v to_o perform_v any_o duty_n and_o find_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difficulty_n you_o can_v go_v to_o christ_n and_o to_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o to_o the_o promise_n and_o there_o fetch_v in_o strength_n you_o have_v ease_n and_o quiet_a oh_o that_o you_o be_v acquaint_v with_o this_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n that_o when_o you_o go_v out_o to_o perform_v duty_n and_o you_o find_v they_o difficult_a and_o hard_a that_o then_o you_o can_v go_v out_o to_o christ_n and_o the_o covenannt_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o promise_n and_o fetch_v strength_n from_o they_o to_o perform_v duty_n this_o be_v the_o ease_n of_o a_o godly_a heart_n when_o it_o find_v ease_n in_o god_n way_n after_o this_o manner_n and_o all_o you_o that_o be_v acquaint_v with_o this_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n know_v that_o whatsoever_o ease_n you_o have_v find_v hitherto_o it_o be_v not_o the_o ease_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n but_o rather_o of_o a_o carnal_a heart_n chap._n cxxxix_o divers_a objection_n easy_a be_v not_o that_o hard_a and_o what_o will_v you_o say_v to_o the_o suffering_n that_o christ_n require_v of_o his_o people_n do_v it_o not_o seem_v very_o hard_o answ_n now_o to_o clear_v the_o point_n from_o all_o these_o difficulty_n either_o what_o christ_n say_v of_o the_o straitness_n of_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n or_o what_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n find_v or_o what_o may_v be_v say_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o discipline_n of_o christ_n in_o his_o church_n or_o what_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o suffering_n that_o christ_n require_v notwithstanding_o all_o these_o yet_o we_o hope_v we_o shall_v make_v it_o clear_a that_o yet_o his_o yoke_n be_v easy_a and_o his_o burden_n be_v light_a and_o further_o we_o be_v to_o show_v how_o it_o come_v to_o be_v easy_a and_o light_a but_o first_o to_o clear_v the_o point_n from_o all_o these_o difficulty_n first_n that_o of_o christ_n that_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n be_v a_o strait_a way_n a_o very_a strait_a way_n there_o must_v be_v crowd_v and_o take_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o pain_n it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v straight_o it_o be_v a_o very_a strait_a way_n to_o man_n that_o be_v but_o natural_a that_o be_v not_o his_o disciple_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o strait_a in_o their_o apprehension_n in_o the_o esteem_n of_o the_o world_n the_o way_n that_o christ_n do_v propound_v to_o come_v to_o heaven_n it_o must_v needs_o i_o say_v be_v very_o straight_o and_o a_o very_a difficult_a way_n in_o the_o esteem_n of_o the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o upon_o these_o ground_n 1._o they_o do_v not_o know_v wherein_o the_o true_a spiritual_a excellency_n of_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n dorh_fw-mi consist_v they_o do_v not_o understand_v what_o the_o excellency_n of_o christ_n way_n be_v 2._o the_o thing_n that_o be_v require_v be_v unsutiable_a to_o they_o they_o be_v not_o suitable_a to_o what_o there_o be_v in_o their_o spirit_n and_o to_o put_v a_o man_n upon_o a_o work_n that_o be_v no_o way_n suitable_a to_o his_o spirit_n must_v needs_o be_v difficult_a must_v needs_o be_v tedious_a it_o be_v not_o suitable_a to_o they_o yea_o it_o be_v contrary_a to_o they_o contrary_a to_o the_o spirit_n of_o those_o that_o be_v natural_a cross_a unto_o the_o grain_n they_o go_v quite_o contrary_a to_o their_o own_o spirit_n when_o they_o venture_v upon_o do_v what_o be_v require_v in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n 3._o they_o be_v weak_a and_o have_v not_o the_o strength_n that_o shall_v carry_v they_o on_o in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n indeed_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v difficult_a to_o think_v to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v supernatural_a &_o have_v nothing_o but_o a_o natural_a strength_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v hard_a to_o nature_n that_o have_v nothing_o but_o weakness_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v hard_a to_o the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n for_o they_o have_v a_o great_a many_o prejudices_fw-la against_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n they_o must_v deny_v themselves_o in_o many_o thing_n that_o be_v as_o dear_a to_o themselves_o as_o their_o very_a soul_n and_o their_o life_n and_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o make_v up_o their_o comfort_n they_o must_v deny_v their_o comfort_n and_o have_v nothing_o to_o make_v up_o their_o comfort_n this_o must_v needs_o be_v difficult_a and_o hard_a and_o so_o many_o ground_n may_v be_v show_v that_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n be_v hard_a to_o the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n a_o hard_a thing_n for_o they_o to_o enter_v upon_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n and_o so_o it_o be_v straight_o to_o they_o in_o their_o esteem_n quest_n i_o but_o further_o be_v it_o not_o straight_o unto_o the_o saint_n even_o to_o the_o very_a disciple_n of_o christ_n do_v not_o they_o find_v difficulty_n in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n answ_n now_o for_o the_o answer_n of_o that_o to_o show_v how_o the_o way_n of_o god_n be_v easy_a notwithstanding_o what_o even_o those_o that_o be_v the_o people_n of_o god_n find_v in_o they_o and_o notwithstanding_o all_o their_o complaint_n those_o that_o be_v godly_a they_o say_v they_o find_v much_o difficulty_n in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n 1._o it_o may_v be_v the_o difficulty_n thou_o speak_v of_o it_o be_v but_o in_o opinion_n rather_o than_o reality_n it_o be_v but_o a_o imaginary_a difficulty_n when_o thou_o look_v upon_o a_o duty_n a_o great_a way_n off_o oh_o thou_o think_v it_o be_v very_o hard_a but_o when_o thou_o come_v to_o it_o thou_o do_v not_o find_v it_o so_o hard_a i_o appeal_v to_o those_o that_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o way_n of_o god_n have_v it_o not_o be_v so_o with_o you_o that_o thing_n have_v seem_v to_o be_v hard_a and_o difficult_a a_o great_a way_n off_o but_o when_o you_o have_v come_v unto_o they_o &_o venture_v upon_o they_o you_o have_v not_o find_v they_o so_o it_o be_v just_a in_o this_o case_n for_o all_o the_o world_n like_a as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o woman_n that_o we_o read_v of_o in_o mark_n 16._o that_o go_v to_o the_o sepulchre_n of_o christ_n as_o they_o be_v go_v at_o verse_n 3_o o_o they_o be_v very_o solicitous_a about_o the_o stone_n that_o be_v roll_v upon_o the_o sepulchre_n who_o shall_v roâ—l_v away_o the_o stone_n but_o now_o when_o they_o come_v to_o the_o sepulchre_n the_o stone_n be_v roll_v away_o so_o it_o be_v here_o when_o there_o be_v many_o duty_n to_o be_v do_v it_o may_v be_v you_o cry_v out_o oh_o it_o be_v very_o hard_a and_o how_o shall_v we_o be_v able_a to_o do_v such_o a_o thing_n such_o a_o poor_a weak_a body_n as_o i_o be_o how_o shall_v i_o be_v able_a to_o do_v it_o but_o when_o you_o come_v to_o the_o duty_n you_o do_v not_o find_v it_o so_o i_o suppose_v there_o be_v many_o that_o at_o first_o think_v it_o a_o very_a difficult_a duty_n to_o keep_v a_o watch_n over_o their_o heart_n and_o to_o pray_v in_o their_o family_n and_o closet_n and_o to_o keep_v close_o to_o god_n but_o when_o they_o have_v come_v to_o the_o thing_n sometime_o when_o you_o have_v have_v no_o heart_n to_o pray_v when_o you_o have_v thought_n to_o go_v to_o prayer_n and_o you_o have_v think_v it_o impossible_a for_o you_o to_o make_v any_o work_n of_o it_o but_o when_o you_o have_v come_v to_o it_o you_o have_v find_v it_o before_o you_o have_v do_v to_o be_v a_o very_a sweet_a and_o comfortable_a duty_n you_o have_v find_v a_o stone_n hardness_n of_o heart_n and_o indisposition_n to_o the_o duty_n before_o you_o have_v come_v to_o the_o duty_n but_o when_o you_o have_v come_v to_o the_o work_n you_o have_v find_v the_o stone_n roll_v away_o and_o the_o work_v not_o so_o hard_o as_o we_o read_v of_o peter_n in_o act_n 12._o 10._o when_o he_o be_v come_v out_o of_o the_o city_n and_o those_o with_o he_o when_o they_o come_v to_o the_o iron_n gate_n in_o be_v it_o easy_a the_o great_a difficulty_n many_o find_v in_o the_o way_n of_o religion_n it_o be_v their_o first_o entrance_n because_o they_o have_v not_o be_v accustom_v to_o such_o thing_n you_o people_n come_v under_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o indeed_o we_o can_v be_v the_o disciple_n of_o jesus_n christ_n as_o we_o ought_v except_o we_o be_v willing_a to_o put_v our_o neck_n under_o the_o yoke_n of_o the_o discipline_n of_o jesus_n christ_n the_o government_n of_o christ_n as_o it_o be_v in_o his_o church_n we_o must_v not_o think_v it_o sufficient_a mere_o that_o we_o profess_v religion_n and_o profess_v godliness_n that_o we_o keep_v from_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n that_o we_o walk_v close_o with_o god_n in_o our_o family_n but_o christ_n require_v likewise_o that_o we_o shall_v come_v and_o subâ—it_v ourselves_o to_o what_o government_n he_o appoint_v in_o his_o church_n and_o that_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o jesus_n christ_n as_o well_o as_o his_o rule_n in_o our_o heart_n indeed_o that_o be_v the_o principal_a work_n of_o christ_n in_o rule_v in_o our_o heart_n but_o christ_n have_v a_o kingly_a power_n in_o rule_v in_o frame_n all_o the_o day_n long_o it_o may_v be_v when_o you_o go_v to_o prayer_n you_o find_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o trouble_n within_o you_o your_o thought_n wander_v and_o your_o affection_n be_v right_o at_o those_o time_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o heart_n keep_v the_o heart_n prepare_v and_o ready_a to_o every_o good_a work_n and_o then_o every_o work_n will_v be_v easy_a object_n but_o you_o will_v say_v that_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o toil_n and_o labour_n to_o keep_v our_o heart_n always_o bend_v and_o ready_a to_o good_a work_n to_o that_o i_o answer_v at_o first_o it_o may_v be_v some_o labour_n and_o toil_n but_o those_o that_o have_v once_o get_v their_o heart_n into_o a_o readiness_n find_v it_o not_o so_o hard_a but_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n
of_o ease_n as_o now_o it_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o toil_n for_o one_o that_o neglect_v his_o account_n he_o be_v not_o ready_a but_o his_o account_n be_v entangle_v if_o he_o be_v call_v to_o now_o but_o to_o think_v of_o what_o you_o have_v hear_v heretofore_o the_o duty_n of_o your_o condition_n now_o be_v not_o to_o spend_v so_o much_o time_n in_o your_o closet_n in_o prayer_n as_o when_o you_o be_v in_o health_n and_o you_o be_v trouble_v for_o the_o want_n of_o this_o we_o often_o trouble_v ourselves_o about_o those_o duty_n that_o be_v not_o the_o duty_n of_o our_o present_a condition_n and_o that_o make_v they_o difficult_a now_o wisdom_n in_o order_v our_o duty_n will_v much_o help_v to_o facilitate_v they_o 7._o another_o rule_n be_v this_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n you_o shall_v ease_v yourselves_o of_o the_o care_n of_o the_o success_n of_o what_o you_o do_v about_o success_n or_o discouragement_n for_o want_n of_o success_n nothing_o make_v our_o that_o belong_v to_o he_o and_o that_o be_v the_o success_n i_o tell_v you_o in_o the_o open_n of_o the_o ease_n that_o there_o be_v certain_a success_n and_o yet_o we_o may_v trouble_v ourselves_o in_o cark_n about_o success_n now_o if_o we_o can_v go_v on_o in_o performance_n of_o duty_n and_o never_o be_v trouble_v about_o success_n it_o will_v be_v exceed_o easy_a but_o christian_n find_v sometime_o that_o though_o they_o have_v be_v diligent_a in_o performance_n of_o duty_n yet_o they_o do_v not_o find_v success_n they_o find_v nothing_o come_v of_o it_o and_o this_o trouble_v they_o &_o this_o make_v they_o go_v heavy_o to_o the_o duty_n at_o another_o time_n i_o but_o observe_v that_o whatever_o duty_n you_o perform_v if_o you_o do_v not_o find_v present_a success_n you_o must_v 11._o another_o rule_n be_v this_o take_v heed_n in_o any_o duty_n of_o disturb_v passion_n the_o disturbance_n of_o passion_n put_v people_n ouâ—_n of_o frame_n that_o they_o be_v fit_a for_o nothing_o when_o they_o be_v passionate_a passionate_a with_o god_n passionate_a with_o man_n because_o they_o can_v have_v what_o they_o will_v have_v fling_v up_o all_o as_o child_n that_o when_o come_v a_o strong_a wind_n and_o toss_v the_o boat_n you_o shall_v have_v some_o silly_a people_n that_o will_v be_v shriek_v out_o and_o mighty_o trouble_v and_o through_o their_o passion_n will_v be_v rise_v up_o in_o the_o boat_n and_o be_v ready_a to_o tumble_v down_o all_o through_o their_o passionate_a carriage_n in_o the_o boat_n whereas_o those_o that_o have_v skill_n will_v sit_v still_o and_o be_v quiet_a and_o give_v up_o themselves_o to_o the_o stream_n and_o that_o be_v the_o best_a way_n to_o come_v with_o the_o great_a ease_n you_o make_v the_o boatmans_n labour_n so_o much_o the_o more_o difficult_a by_o your_o unquietness_n in_o the_o boat_n so_o certain_o you_o make_v the_o work_n of_o god_n more_o difficult_a when_o your_o heart_n be_v unquiet_a let_v the_o thing_n be_v what_o it_o will_v you_o will_v say_v oh_o no_o body_n condition_n be_v so_o as_o i_o certain_o your_o unquietness_n will_v not_o help_v you_o you_o will_v not_o come_v the_o soon_o to_o your_o land_a place_n if_o people_n toss_v from_o one_o side_n of_o the_o boat_n to_o the_o other_o and_o be_v unruly_a in_o their_o carriage_n they_o will_v not_o come_v the_o soon_o to_o their_o
