their_o own_o soul_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o conversion_n it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v there_o be_v a_o great_a decay_n of_o sound_n plain_a and_o profitable_a preach_n especial_o about_o the_o point_n of_o justificiation_n and_o conversion_n next_o to_o erroneous_a preach_n it_o be_v most_o offensive_a to_o a_o intelligent_a and_o spiritual_a hearer_n when_o a_o minister_n preach_v with_o high_a word_n affect_v such_o a_o stile_n as_o be_v no_o way_n suit_v to_o the_o profit_n of_o his_o hearer_n and_o though_o such_o may_v admire_v themselves_o and_o also_o have_v their_o reward_n that_o be_v applause_n of_o the_o ignorant_a yet_o their_o preach_n be_v nauseated_a of_o the_o judicious_a it_o be_v a_o more_o difficult_a thing_n and_o require_v more_o substantial_a learning_n to_o set_v forth_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o the_o capacity_n of_o ordinary_a hearer_n then_o to_o stuff_n sermon_n with_o quotation_n scrap_n of_o latin_a and_o school_n term_n make_v ready_a to_o our_o hand_n but_o it_o may_v be_v say_v see_v that_o the_o habit_n of_o grace_n and_o spiritual_a life_n be_v infuse_v into_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n as_o have_v be_v show_v temptation_n and_o a_o snare_n be_v apt_a to_o be_v ever_o and_o anon_o lean_v something_o to_o their_o own_o righteousness_n but_o as_o god_n take_v they_o off_o by_o his_o grace_n from_o put_v any_o confidence_n therein_o and_o lead_v they_o forth_o again_o by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o account_v all_o their_o blameless_a walk_v before_o or_o since_o their_o conversion_n but_o dung_n in_o point_n of_o justification_n and_o to_o the_o end_n of_o their_o day_n after_o all_o their_o do_v and_o suffer_v desire_v only_o to_o be_v find_v in_o christ_n have_v on_o they_o his_o righteousness_n to_o justify_v they_o at_o god_n bar._n and_o herein_o lie_v much_o of_o the_o light_n and_o lead_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o that_o be_v true_a believer_n that_o although_o other_o that_o be_v ignorant_a of_o these_o thing_n may_v think_v that_o they_o have_v not_o much_o need_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n because_o they_o have_v not_o be_v stain_v with_o gross_a sin_n all_o their_o day_n and_o they_o themselves_o at_o time_n may_v be_v tempt_v to_o such_o thought_n yet_o the_o lord_n show_v they_o that_o they_o be_v so_o vile_a by_o nature_n and_o their_o best_a righteousness_n so_o imperfect_a that_o they_o have_v as_o much_o need_n to_o prize_n christ_n and_o to_o live_v pure_o and_o fole_o upon_o his_o righteousness_n as_o any_o poor_a creature_n in_o the_o world_n again_o those_o that_o be_v convert_v young_a and_o have_v not_o commit_v some_o gross_a sin_n that_o other_o have_v commit_v be_v apt_a to_o carry_v it_o not_o with_o that_o compassion_n of_o the_o ignorant_a and_o of_o they_o that_o be_v out_o of_o the_o way_n and_o utter_o debauch_v as_o those_o many_o time_n do_v who_o have_v run_v to_o the_o same_o excess_n of_o riot_n and_o be_v now_o convert_v unto_o god_n whereas_o that_o be_v the_o right_a spirit_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o be_v very_o pitiful_a yea_o very_a gentle_a in_o our_o carriage_n to_o the_o vile_a of_o man_n yet_o right_o temper_v with_o a_o holy_a zeal_n against_o sin_n likewise_o those_o that_o be_v convert_v young_a and_o have_v not_o commit_v such_o abomination_n as_o other_o have_v do_v be_v apt_a to_o be_v lift_v up_o with_o a_o conceit_n of_o their_o own_o strength_n and_o not_o to_o be_v so_o sensible_a of_o the_o corruption_n of_o their_o nature_n as_o other_o be_v wherefore_o the_o lord_n do_v sometime_o leave_v they_o unto_o great_a temptation_n and_o sometime_o to_o fall_v foul_o in_o some_o thing_n for_o a_o season_n even_o after_o their_o conversion_n that_o they_o may_v see_v what_o be_v in_o their_o heart_n and_o that_o they_o shall_v have_v be_v as_o vile_a as_o any_o in_o the_o world_n if_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o bestow_v his_o grace_n upon_o they_o or_o no_o to_o give_v diligence_n to_o make_v our_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a if_o it_o be_v not_o that_o those_o that_o be_v not_o yet_o convert_v may_v find_v it_o out_o that_o they_o may_v not_o deceive_v themselves_o but_o now_o look_v after_o union_n with_o christ_n which_o yet_o they_o have_v not_o and_o that_o those_o that_o be_v convert_v indeed_o may_v be_v assure_v of_o it_o and_o so_o rejoice_v and_o give_v praise_n and_o be_v stir_v up_o to_o walk_v worthy_a in_o all_o thing_n of_o the_o vocation_n wherewith_o they_o be_v call_v if_o a_o man_n be_v not_o yet_o true_o bring_v they_o to_o see_v they_o be_v in_o the_o broad_a way_n that_o lead_v to_o destruction_n and_o bring_v they_o out_o of_o it_o unto_o christ_n now_o then_o in_o answer_n to_o this_o great_a question_n how_o may_v a_o man_n know_v that_o he_o be_v true_o convert_v and_o in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n 1._o it_o may_v be_v know_v by_o discern_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n upon_o the_o heart_n 2._o it_o may_v be_v know_v by_o the_o more_o immediate_a testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n 1._o conversion_n may_v be_v know_v by_o discern_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n upon_o the_o heart_n if_o a_o man_n think_v himself_o something_o when_o he_o be_v nothing_o he_o deceive_v himself_o gal._n 6.3_o well_o then_o how_o shall_v such_o a_o man_n be_v undeceive_v v._o 4._o let_v every_o man_n prove_v his_o own_o work_n so_o shall_v he_o have_v rejoice_v in_o himself_o alone_o and_o not_o in_o another_o that_o be_v let_v he_o try_v whether_o the_o lord_n have_v begin_v the_o good_a work_n of_o grace_n in_o he_o let_v he_o prove_v and_o examine_v himself_o whether_o he_o have_v true_a faith_n true_a repentance_n true_a love_n to_o god_n true_a love_n to_o the_o brethren_n so_o shall_v he_o have_v rejoice_v in_o himself_o alone_o discern_v that_o god_n have_v wrought_v in_o he_o those_o thing_n that_o accompany_v salvation_n and_o not_o rejoice_v mere_o in_o the_o good_a opinion_n of_o other_o who_o though_o they_o be_v gracious_a and_o spiritual_a may_v easy_o be_v deceive_v in_o judge_v of_o the_o spiritual_a estate_n of_o other_o be_v not_o so_o suspicious_a of_o other_o as_o they_o be_v of_o themselves_o and_o know_v not_o the_o secret_a passage_n between_o god_n and_o their_o soul_n as_o they_o know_v thing_n between_o god_n and_o themselves_o many_o scripture_n may_v be_v bring_v to_o show_v that_o we_o be_v to_o take_v this_o course_n in_o judge_v of_o our_o spiritual_a estate_n hereby_o we_o know_v that_o we_o know_v he_o if_o we_o keep_v his_o those_o who_o will_v know_v whether_o they_o be_v yet_o convert_v set_v themselves_o as_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o examine_v themselves_o whether_o the_o lord_n have_v make_v they_o sensible_a of_o the_o danger_n and_o evil_n that_o there_o be_v in_o sin_n whether_o the_o lord_n have_v take_v they_o off_o from_o trust_v in_o their_o own_o righteousness_n and_o strength_n whether_o the_o lord_n have_v reveal_v christ_n to_o they_o as_o mediator_n and_o fix_v their_o heart_n to_o put_v their_o whole_a trust_n in_o he_o whether_o the_o lord_n have_v wrought_v in_o they_o godly_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n and_o put_v a_o new_a bent_n of_o holiness_n upon_o their_o heart_n to_o desire_v and_o endeavour_v to_o walk_v so_o as_o to_o please_v god_n he_o that_o will_v have_v these_o thing_n more_o full_o open_v let_v he_o remember_v or_o look_v back_o to_o the_o three_o chapter_n where_o i_o have_v show_v more_o large_o what_o conversion_n and_o special_a grace_n be_v and_o to_o let_v he_o examine_v himself_o according_o but_o that_o i_o may_v through_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n be_v further_o helpful_a to_o those_o who_o will_v try_v their_o spiritual_a estate_n to_o find_v out_o what_o god_n have_v do_v for_o their_o soul_n let_v these_o thing_n be_v observe_v 1._o that_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n be_v not_o always_o alike_o visible_a and_o discernible_a in_o a_o child_n of_o god_n neither_o to_o himself_o nor_o other_o with_o who_o he_o have_v to_o do_v through_o bodily_a distemper_n through_o viclent_a temptation_n through_o sore_a fall_n into_o darkness_n and_o trouble_n of_o spirit_n thereupon_o with_o some_o it_o be_v thus_o a_o great_a while_n god_n order_v it_o thus_o among_o other_o holy_a end_n of_o his_o by_o such_o example_n of_o trouble_a conscience_n to_o put_v other_o upon_o more_o trial_n of_o their_o spiritual_a estate_n to_o draw_v forth_o our_o pity_n and_o compassion_n to_o such_o as_o be_v in_o these_o spiritual_a distress_n and_o to_o make_v we_o more_o thankful_a for_o the_o light_n of_o god_n spirit_n to_o discern_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n in_o ourselves_o which_o these_o poor_a sorrowful_a one_o can_v attain_v unto_o and_o to_o show_v we_o that_o which_o i_o be_o now_o upon_o that_o grace_n be_v so_o little_a in_o the_o best_a be_v sometime_o scarce_o discernible_a especial_o when_o the_o body_n be_v sickyl_n and_o distemper_v and_o there_o be_v some_o special_a hour_n and_o power_n of_o darkness_n upon_o we_o by_o the_o way_n i_o be_o afraid_a that_o sometime_o godly_a minister_n unaware_o may_v deliver_v something_n that_o may_v much_o puzzle_v poor_a christian_n about_o try_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n upon_o their_o heart_n and_o bring_v they_o into_o great_a darkness_n and_o trouble_n of_o spirit_n however_o that_o which_o i_o shall_v take_v notice_n of_o may_v be_v a_o caution_n to_o such_o as_o shall_v read_v these_o thing_n that_o they_o do_v not_o so_o i_o have_v observe_v that_o minister_n do_v sometime_o speak_v so_o unwary_o of_o the_o sign_n of_o this_o grace_n and_o the_o other_o that_o those_o sign_n which_o they_o lie_v down_o be_v sign_n only_o of_o the_o high_a act_n of_o that_o grace_n and_o
be_v not_o to_o be_v bring_v in_o as_o trial_n whether_o a_o person_n have_v the_o truth_n of_o that_o grace_n which_o may_v be_v and_o yet_o not_o those_o high_a act_n of_o it_o i_o affect_v plainness_n and_o not_o obscurity_n therefore_o i_o will_v try_v to_o make_v out_o my_o observation_n better_o suppose_v a_o minister_n be_v preach_v about_o the_o nature_n of_o faith_n and_o shall_v make_v this_o a_o sign_n to_o the_o people_n to_o try_v their_o faith_n by_o if_o they_o can_v believe_v at_o all_o time_n that_o god_n will_v bring_v about_o every_o particular_a thing_n for_o they_o which_o their_o eye_n be_v towards_o he_o for_o and_o which_o he_o have_v promise_v without_o hesitation_n waver_v and_o consider_v and_o pore_v upon_o those_o thing_n that_o stand_v in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o mercy_n and_o for_o this_o quote_v abraham_n example_n that_o when_o he_o have_v the_o promise_n of_o a_o son_n in_o his_o old_a age_n he_o consider_v not_o his_o own_o body_n nor_o yet_o the_o deadness_n of_o sarahs_n womb_n rom._n 4._o 18._o 19_o whereas_o it_o be_v say_v there_o that_o he_o be_v not_o weak_a in_o faith_n but_o strong_a in_o faith_n be_v enable_v to_o do_v so_o that_o such_o thing_n must_v be_v bring_v in_o as_o example_n of_o what_o believer_n shall_v do_v and_o of_o what_o believer_n be_v sometime_o enable_v through_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n to_o do_v even_o to_o act_v faith_n very_o high_o and_o strong_o and_o not_o to_o prove_v that_o he_o be_v not_o a_o true_a believer_n that_o do_v not_o always_o thus_o and_o so_o if_o this_o be_v lay_v down_o as_o a_o trial_n of_o faith_n that_o one_o that_o have_v true_a faith_n will_v not_o be_v daunt_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o great_a peril_n nor_o use_v sinful_a way_n to_o bring_v himself_o out_o of_o trouble_n and_o quote_v for_o this_o the_o heroic_a courage_n of_o the_o three_o child_n before_o nabuchadnezzar_n daniel_n 3._o and_o david_n encourage_v himself_o in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n when_o ziklag_n be_v take_v and_o the_o people_n speak_v of_o ston_a he_o 1_o sam._n 30.6_o how_o may_v this_o puzzle_v poor_a soul_n and_o make_v they_o reflect_v upon_o themselves_o as_o if_o they_o have_v no_o true_a faith_n because_o it_o may_v be_v they_o have_v find_v many_o fear_n in_o time_n of_o danger_n and_o use_v some_o sinful_a shift_a in_o time_n of_o trouble_n yea_o and_o do_v not_o those_o man_n who_o be_v so_o famous_a in_o their_o genneration_n falter_v much_o in_o their_o faith_n and_o courage_n sometime_o as_o abraham_n when_o he_o twice_o deny_v sarah_n to_o be_v his_o wife_n as_o we_o see_v in_o geneses_n and_o peter_n when_o he_o deny_v christ_n and_o yet_o still_o the_o habit_n of_o faith_n remain_v with_o they_o and_o david_n though_o all_o that_o time_n before_o mention_v he_o be_v bold_a in_o his_o god_n yet_o all_o other_o time_n how_o fearful_a be_v he_o and_o that_o present_o after_o god_n have_v emminent_o appear_v for_o he_o 1_o sam._n 27.1_o and_o then_o he_o be_v sore_o afraid_a of_o achish_a king_n of_o gath_n and_o change_v his_o behaviour_n and_o feign_v himself_o mad_a and_o scrable_v at_o the_o door_n of_o the_o gate_n etc._n etc._n all_o to_o get_v out_o off_o the_o danger_n he_o be_v in_o therefore_o careful_a must_v we_o be_v when_o we_o set_v before_o other_o trial_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o they_o that_o we_o do_v not_o take_v scripture_n that_o speak_v of_o the_o saint_n of_o old_a when_o they_o act_v grace_n high_o and_o urge_v this_o upon_o people_n that_o if_o they_o do_v not_o always_o so_o they_o have_v not_o the_o truth_n of_o grace_n in_o they_o indeed_o such_o example_n of_o the_o saint_n shall_v be_v insist_v on_o to_o show_v other_o what_o they_o shall_v do_v in_o like_a case_n but_o not_o to_o make_v they_o trial_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o their_o grace_n so_o as_o that_o they_o shall_v conclude_v they_o have_v not_o the_o truth_n of_o grace_n except_o they_o be_v in_o every_o thing_n at_o all_o time_n assist_v and_o influence_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n as_o they_o be_v sometime_o abraham_n david_n and_o peter_n sometime_o act_v above_o themselves_o through_o the_o strong_a help_n of_o assist_a grace_n and_o sometime_o act_v as_o much_o below_o themselves_o through_o the_o power_n of_o temptation_n and_o the_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o they_o and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o other_o saint_n he_o therefore_o that_o will_v not_o lay_v a_o stumble_a block_n before_o the_o weak_a in_o speak_v of_o these_o thing_n must_v careful_o distinguish_v between_o it_o all_o that_o i_o aim_v at_o be_v that_o as_o minister_n doctrine_n shall_v be_v quick_a and_o powerful_a to_o convince_v ignorant_a and_o presumptuous_a sinner_n that_o they_o be_v in_o the_o way_n to_o destruction_n so_o they_o shall_v be_v careful_a at_o the_o same_o time_n that_o they_o do_v not_o quench_v the_o smoke_a flax_n nor_o break_v the_o bruise_a reed_n puzzle_v and_o make_v sad_a any_o righteous_a one_o who_o god_n will_v not_o have_v make_v sad_a remember_v that_o it_o be_v one_o end_n of_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v helper_n of_o their_o joy_n and_o so_o much_o for_o this_o digression_n grace_n be_v not_o always_o alike_o visible_a in_o true_a believer_n as_o have_v be_v show_v sometime_o the_o saint_n walk_v in_o the_o sunshine_n and_o sometime_o in_o the_o dark_a therefore_o it_o be_v needful_a that_o we_o shall_v be_v often_o try_v our_o spiritual_a estate_n and_o sometime_o set_v special_a time_n apart_o for_o by_o sing_v of_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n upon_o our_o heart_n it_o be_v best_a or_o dinary_o to_o try_v ourselves_o about_o the_o main_a thing_n wherein_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n do_v principal_o consist_v as_o to_o try_v whether_o we_o have_v true_a faith_n in_o christ_n true_a repentance_n true_a love_n to_o god_n and_o the_o like_a or_o else_o through_o our_o weakness_n we_o be_v apt_a to_o be_v confound_v by_o a_o multitude_n of_o sign_n this_o way_n be_v safe_a enough_o for_o where_o there_o be_v only_a grace_n in_o truth_n there_o be_v all_o at_o least_o in_o the_o root_n and_o habit_n 3._o in_o try_v and_o examine_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n upon_o our_o heart_n we_o must_v pray_v for_o the_o light_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o show_v we_o those_o grace_n that_o he_o have_v
