and_o indeed_o be_v better_a than_o mere_o natural_a part_n 1_o if_o it_o be_v only_o natural_a conscience_n it_o put_v upon_o duty_n but_o give_v no_o strength_n to_o do_v they_o but_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n put_v thou_o upon_o a_o duty_n it_o give_v thou_o some_o strength_n to_o perform_v it_o some_o strength_n whereby_o thou_o get_v some_o communion_n with_o god_n 2._o if_o it_o be_v natural_a conscience_n it_o put_v upon_o the_o duty_n but_o make_v not_o the_o heart_n glad_a of_o the_o duty_n and_o to_o love_v the_o duty_n but_o if_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n it_o it_o will_v do_v and_o no_o more_o but_o when_o one_o be_v act_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n one_o be_v enlarge_v without_o any_o limit_n at_o all_o not_o bound_v to_o one_o own_o peace_n for_o the_o more_o peace_n a_o gracious_a heart_n have_v in_o duty_n the_o more_o it_o be_v enlarge_v in_o duty_n now_o a_o natural_a conscience_n that_o put_v to_o duty_n and_o will_v act_v you_o when_o you_o want_v peace_n when_o you_o be_v in_o trouble_n and_o fear_n but_o when_o you_o be_v not_o in_o trouble_n and_o fear_n than_o it_o put_v not_o on_o the_o heart_n to_o performance_n of_o duty_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n put_v on_o the_o soul_n to_o duty_n when_o there_o be_v most_o peace_n and_o comfort_n 6_o a_o little_a will_v serve_v the_o turn_n to_o satisfy_v a_o natural_a attribute_n of_o god_n but_o first_o for_o those_o two_o head_n further_o 8_o the_o eight_o thing_n be_v this_o when_o you_o come_v to_o perform_v holy_a duty_n if_o you_o will_v sanctify_v god_n and_o yet_o these_o be_v account_v honest_a man_n in_o the_o world_n but_o this_o be_v not_o the_o honest_a heart_n the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o and_o many_o there_o be_v that_o go_v further_o than_o these_o that_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n and_o yet_o they_o have_v not_o this_o honest_a heart_n yea_o they_o may_v hear_v the_o word_n so_o as_o to_o bring_v forth_o a_o blade_n and_o yet_o nor_o have_v this_o honest_a heart_n by_o this_o honest_a heart_n i_o take_v therefore_o to_o be_v mean_v this_o a_o heart_n that_o deal_v square_o and_o true_o with_o god_n behave_v itself_o in_o a_o beseem_a manner_n suitable_a to_o that_o authority_n and_o excellency_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o now_o for_o example_n 1_o first_o among_o man_n he_o be_v account_v a_o honest_a man_n that_o deal_v square_o and_o true_o with_o man_n in_o all_o action_n such_o a_o man_n you_o will_v say_v be_v a_o honest_a man_n as_o honest_a a_o man_n as_o man_n put_v he_o upon_o any_o easy_a service_n as_o many_o will_v embrace_v that_o or_o put_v he_o upon_o a_o difficult_a service_n it_o be_v all_o one_o if_o it_o be_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n you_o that_o be_v set_v only_o two_o or_o three_o be_v keep_v from_o the_o caterpillar_n a_o man_n go_v into_o his_o orchard_n and_o look_n upon_o his_o tree_n and_o this_o be_v spoil_v and_o that_o be_v spoil_v but_o he_o see_v two_o or_o three_o and_o these_o flourish_n fair_o and_o these_o be_v full_a of_o bud_n and_o be_v like_a to_o come_v to_o something_o and_o he_o rejoice_v mighty_o in_o and_o soul_n from_o these_o caterpillar_n that_o have_v be_v upon_o our_o duty_n but_o many_o duty_n have_v be_v spoil_v yet_o thou_o may_v say_v that_o hrough_a god_n mercy_n such_o a_o morning_n in_o my_o closet_n the_o lord_n have_v preserve_v a_o prayer_n to_o himself_o and_o i_o have_v get_v power_n over_o this_o vain_a heart_n of_o i_o bless_v god_n for_o this_o and_o so_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n will_v he_o more_o ready_a to_o come_v in_o and_o help_v thou_o another_o time_n but_o thus_o much_o shall_v suffice_v to_o speak_v to_o this_o that_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n we_o take_v it_o up_o at_o the_o other_o end_n and_o so_o help_v he_o the_o word_n signify_v such_o a_o kind_n of_o help_v as_o when_o a_o man_n take_v a_o thing_n at_o the_o other_o end_n or_o on_o the_o other_o side_n one_o stand_v the_o one_o way_n and_o the_o other_o stand_v the_o other_o way_n or_o one_o take_v up_o one_o end_n and_o the_o other_o the_o other_o end_n that_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o it_o he_o help_v our_o infirmity_n the_o poor_a soul_n be_v pull_v and_o tug_v with_o its_o own_o heart_n and_o find_v his_o heart_n heavy_a and_o dull_a like_o a_o log_n in_o a_o ditch_n and_o of_o the_o log_n and_o that_o be_v but_o light_n and_o the_o other_o end_n very_o heavy_a if_o one_o come_v and_o take_v up_o the_o heavy_a end_n a_o little_a strength_n will_v serve_v for_o the_o light_a end_n so_o the_o spirit_n come_v and_o take_v up_o the_o heavy_a end_n in_o duty_n and_o so_o help_v our_o infirmity_n help_v together_o and_o then_o the_o other_o word_n be_v the_o spirit_n that_o will_v come_v so_o nigh_o god_n presence_n and_o come_v with_o base_a and_o ungodly_a heart_n to_o cloak_v their_o villainy_n of_o all_o in_o the_o world_n they_o must_v expect_v to_o have_v the_o severe_a vengeance_n of_o god_n let_v down_o upon_o they_o they_o that_o stand_v nigh_a the_o bullet_n must_v expect_v to_o have_v the_o strength_n of_o it_o to_o be_v the_o more_o upon_o they_o need_n look_v to_o their_o heart_n they_o shall_v spend_v some_o time_n in_o preparation_n when_o they_o come_v to_o holy_a duty_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v when_o the_o conscience_n of_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v at_o first_o enlighten_v and_o awaken_v they_o will_v be_v very_o careful_a in_o prepare_v to_o holy_a duty_n the_o fear_n of_o god_n it_o be_v mighty_a upon_o their_o spirit_n at_o first_o and_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v less_o afterward_o the_o constancy_n of_o god_n fear_v shall_v bring_v their_o heart_n to_o such_o a_o holy_a temper_n as_o to_o make_v they_o fit_a for_o holy_a towards_o god_n in_o some_o vile_a way_n i_o say_v it_o be_v require_v of_o they_o to_o be_v more_o solemn_a in_o the_o work_n of_o preparation_n 2_o but_o now_o for_o the_o second_o case_n which_o indeed_o be_v the_o main_a suppose_v when_o we_o come_v to_o duty_n and_o begin_v to_o examine_v our_o heart_n and_o begin_v to_o bethink_v ourselves_o whether_o we_o be_v prepare_v yea_o or_o no_o to_o holy_a duty_n and_o we_o do_v not_o find_v our_o heart_n prepare_v according_a to_o that_o that_o we_o do_v desire_n whether_o then_o we_o may_v let_v the_o duty_n go_v for_o that_o time_n and_o forbear_v the_o performance_n of_o it_o as_o suppose_v prayer_n or_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n or_o come_v to_o the_o word_n or_o any_o other_o holy_a duty_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o doubt_n case_n in_o regard_n of_o this_o and_o it_o make_v they_o watchful_a for_o time_n to_o come_v to_o take_v heed_n of_o those_o thing_n that_o have_v put_v they_o in_o such_o a_o unpreparation_n as_o they_o find_v their_o heart_n to_o be_v in_o at_o this_o time_n now_o if_o it_o be_v so_o with_o thou_o it_o be_v a_o good_a sign_n that_o thy_o heart_n may_v be_v upright_o with_o god_n though_o through_o infirmity_n it_o come_v at_o such_o a_o time_n to_o be_v unprepared_a for_o the_o duty_n but_o yet_o suppose_v i_o find_v i_o be_o not_o prepare_v i_o be_o grieve_v and_o trouble_v at_o it_o for_o that_o must_v be_v premise_v whether_o be_v i_o better_a to_o leave_v the_o duty_n for_o this_o time_n than_o to_o fall_v upon_o it_o in_o such_o a_o unpreparation_n as_o this_o be_v now_o for_o the_o answer_n to_o this_o question_n 1_o first_o that_o which_o i_o will_v answer_v to_o it_o be_v this_o the_o omission_n of_o a_o duty_n or_o the_o lay_n of_o a_o duty_n aside_o will_v never_o fit_v the_o soul_n for_o a_o duty_n afterward_o it_o be_v no_o way_n to_o make_v thy_o soul_n more_o fit_a afterward_o because_o thou_o have_v lay_v it_o aside_o now_o for_o the_o present_a do_v but_o observe_v your_o own_o heart_n that_o way_n and_o you_o will_v find_v this_o by_o experience_n such_o a_o time_n you_o have_v be_v buâ—e_a in_o the_o world_n and_o occasion_n have_v hinder_v you_o so_o as_o your_o heart_n be_v out_o of_o temper_n and_o frame_v for_o a_o duty_n you_o lay_v it_o aside_o now_o be_v you_o more_o fâ—t_o the_o next_o day_n if_o you_o do_v neglect_v duty_n in_o the_o morning_n upon_o any_o business_n be_v you_o fit_a to_o perform_v duty_n at_o night_n because_o of_o it_o â—_o you_o will_v not_o find_v it_o to_o be_v so_o the_o forbear_v a_o duty_n now_o will_v not_o make_v the_o soul_n fit_a for_o a_o duty_n afterward_o â—â—erefore_o it_o be_v no_o wisdom_n to_o forbear_v a_o duty_n for_o want_n of_o preparation_n because_o the_o forbearance_n will_v never_o help_v to_o further_a preparation_n but_o will_v make_v the_o soul_n more_o unfit_a for_o duty_n it_o be_v a_o excellent_a speech_n that_o i_o read_v that_o luther_n have_v concern_v himself_o i_o have_v learn_v this_o by_o experience_n that_o the_o often_o i_o do_v omit_v duty_n the_o often_o do_v i_o make_v myself_o the_o more_o unfit_a for_o duty_n and_o cause_n i_o have_v to_o abhor_v myself_o it_o be_v not_o the_o defer_v that_o make_v thou_o the_o more_o fit_a 2_o therefore_o consider_v that_o this_o be_v but_o a_o temptation_n and_o that_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n that_o i_o will_v propound_v to_o those_o that_o shall_v omit_v a_o duty_n because_o they_o be_v not_o prepare_v that_o this_o be_v but_o a_o temptation_n to_o keep_v thou_o from_o it_o to_o tell_v thou_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o prepare_v and_o if_o thou_o shall_v forbear_v it_o because_o thou_o be_v not_o prepare_v in_o this_o thing_n thou_o do_v gratify_v the_o devil_n and_o the_o devil_n have_v what_o he_o will_v have_v and_o so_o will_v be_v encourage_v to_o tempt_v thou_o another_o time_n because_o he_o have_v now_o what_o he_o will_v have_v in_o cause_v thou_o to_o forbear_v the_o duty_n first_o he_o labour_v to_o unfit_a thou_o for_o it_o and_o then_o he_o tempt_v thou_o to_o forbear_v it_o because_o thou_o be_v unfit_a this_o
be_v the_o subtlety_n of_o the_o devil_n from_o whence_o be_v it_o that_o thou_o be_v unfit_a but_o from_o the_o temptation_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o i_o find_v luther_n again_o that_o be_v a_o man_n that_o have_v as_o much_o converse_n with_o god_n as_o any_o in_o his_o day_n and_o a_o man_n that_o have_v as_o much_o to_o draw_v his_o heart_n away_o as_o many_o temptation_n and_o as_o many_o business_n as_o any_o for_o indeed_o the_o great_a cause_n of_o christ_n in_o all_o the_o christian_a world_n in_o a_o great_a measure_n under_o god_n lay_v upon_o his_o shoulder_n and_o yet_o say_v he_o if_o any_o one_o think_v that_o prayer_n must_v be_v defer_v till_o the_o soul_n be_v purify_v from_o impure_a cogitation_n he_o do_v no_o other_o than_o help_v the_o devil_n who_o be_v powerful_a enough_o he_o think_v to_o be_v wise_a in_o defer_v the_o duty_n because_o he_o be_v not_o fit_a and_o he_o have_v many_o ill_a thought_n and_o trouble_n in_o his_o spirit_n he_o do_v nothing_o else_o say_v luther_n but_o gratify_v the_o devil_n that_o be_v strong_a enough_o without_o this_o oh_o let_v we_o take_v heed_n of_o gratify_v the_o devil_n in_o his_o temptation_n therefore_o remember_v it_o be_v a_o temptation_n for_o thou_o to_o omit_v a_o duty_n mere_o because_o thou_o be_v not_o prepare_v â—or_a the_o duty_n 3_o in_o the_o three_o place_n that_o which_o i_o will_v answer_v to_o this_o question_n be_v this_o if_o any_o one_o perform_v a_o duty_n of_o worship_n in_o that_o sincerity_n and_o strength_n that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v it_o though_o he_o be_v not_o prepare_v as_o he_o ought_v yet_o it_o be_v better_a to_o do_v it_o than_o to_o neglect_v it_o it_o be_v true_a some_o do_v perform_v a_o duty_n in_o a_o mere_a formal_a way_n and_o to_o satisfy_v their_o conscience_n or_o to_o cloak_n and_o cover_v their_o sin_n and_o the_o like_a perhaps_o they_o may_v so_o perform_v it_o as_o it_o may_v be_v better_a to_o be_v unperformed_a than_o to_o perform_v it_o as_o they_o do_v but_o if_o you_o do_v endeavour_n to_o the_o uttermost_a of_o your_o strength_n to_o do_v it_o though_o you_o be_v not_o prepare_v as_o you_o do_v desire_n yet_o it_o be_v better_a to_o do_v it_o than_o to_o omit_v the_o do_n of_o it_o and_o you_o will_v find_v it_o so_o for_o one_o duty_n do_v prepare_v for_o another_o though_o it_o be_v not_o do_v as_o i_o desire_v it_o shall_v be_v do_v yet_o the_o do_v of_o it_o as_o well_o as_o i_o can_v at_o this_o time_n will_v help_v i_o to_o do_v it_o better_o at_o another_o time_n that_o be_v certain_a as_o one_o sin_n do_v prepare_v the_o heart_n for_o another_o sin_n so_o one_o duty_n prepare_v the_o heart_n for_o another_o as_o now_o suppose_v a_o man_n commit_v a_o sin_n and_o he_o have_v a_o conscience_n that_o be_v enlighten_v that_o do_v hinder_v he_o from_o commit_v his_o sin_n with_o that_o full_a strength_n that_o he_o will_v do_v it_o many_o a_o man_n have_v a_o mind_n to_o sin_v but_o through_o the_o enlighten_v of_o his_o conscience_n he_o can_v sin_v with_o that_o delight_n as_o he_o will_v because_o his_o conscience_n fly_v in_o his_o face_n and_o do_v interrupt_v he_o but_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o through_o the_o strength_n of_o his_o corruption_n he_o will_v break_v through_o to_o that_o sin_n new_a though_o at_o first_o they_o can_v commit_v that_o sin_n with_o that_o delight_n and_o freedom_n as_o they_o do_v at_o other_o time_n yet_o if_o their_o corruption_n be_v so_o strong_a as_o to_o break_v through_o the_o light_n of_o their_o conscience_n the_o next_o time_n they_o come_v to_o the_o commit_n of_o that_o sin_n they_o will_v commit_v it_o with_o more_o freedom_n and_o ease_v a_o great_a deal_n this_o be_v evident_a by_o experience_n there_o be_v none_o of_o you_o but_o if_o you_o well_o observe_v your_o heart_n you_o will_v find_v this_o a_o temptation_n come_v to_o a_o sin_n now_o you_o can_v do_v it_o with_o so_o much_o freedom_n as_o you_o will_v but_o yet_o you_o break_v through_o it_o you_o will_v find_v that_o the_o next_o time_n you_o will_v commit_v it_o with_o more_o freedom_n and_o so_o one_o sin_n will_v prepare_v for_o another_o and_o it_o may_v be_v you_o have_v some_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n at_o first_o but_o the_o next_o time_n you_o will_v have_v less_o trouble_n till_o at_o length_n you_o can_v commit_v it_o free_o without_o any_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n at_o all_o as_o it_o be_v in_o sin_n so_o it_o be_v in_o godliness_n many_o time_n in_o some_o degree_n at_o the_o f_z r_v you_o have_v a_o motion_n to_o a_o holy_a duty_n but_o through_o the_o stir_n of_o your_o corruption_n you_o be_v not_o fit_a for_o it_o now_o do_v you_o but_o break_v through_o that_o difficulty_n and_o the_o next_o time_n you_o will_v be_v more_o fit_a and_o the_o next_o time_n after_o that_o you_o will_v be_v more_o fit_a and_o so_o still_o more_o and_o more_o fit_a as_o it_o be_v in_o sin_n if_o a_o man_n when_o he_o have_v some_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n will_v but_o listen_v to_o his_o conscience_n and_o will_v not_o commit_v that_o sin_n his_o conscience_n will_v grow_v strong_a upon_o he_o and_o strengthen_v he_o against_o that_o sin_n so_o if_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n listen_v to_o the_o temp_n aâ—ion_n to_o defer_v duty_n and_o put_v it_o off_o because_o they_o be_v not_o prepare_v why_o after_o that_o the_o corruption_n will_v grow_v more_o strong_a therefore_o set_v upon_o the_o duty_n and_o the_o performance_n of_o one_o duty_n will_v prepare_v for_o another_o 4_o in_o the_o four_o place_n while_o man_n and_o woman_n be_v struggle_v with_o their_o soul_n and_o the_o corruption_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o do_v not_o fall_v upon_o seek_v god_n they_o by_o their_o very_a struggle_v to_o prepare_v themselves_o many_o time_n do_v ensnare_v themselves_o it_o may_v be_v thou_o have_v thought_n of_o atheism_n or_o other_o wickedness_n the_o very_a struggle_v with_o those_o thought_n may_v ensnare_v thy_o heart_n now_o the_o better_a way_n be_v to_o fall_v upon_o prayer_n and_o to_o cry_v to_o god_n to_o help_v thou_o against_o they_o for_o while_o thou_o be_v struggle_v and_o strive_v with_o those_o thought_n thou_o be_v strive_v with_o the_o corruption_n of_o thy_o heart_n and_o with_o the_o devil_n all_o alone_a but_o now_o when_o thou_o fall_v to_o the_o duty_n thou_o call_v in_o the_o help_n of_o god_n and_o of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o that_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n better_o while_o thou_o be_v muse_v plod_a and_o trouble_v thy_o heart_n that_o way_n i_o say_v thou_o be_v struggle_v alone_o but_o now_o when_o thou_o fall_v upon_o the_o duty_n than_o thou_o call_v in_o help_n from_o god_n and_o so_o thou_o be_v more_o able_a to_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o duty_n than_o than_o be_v before_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v the_o best_a way_n to_o fall_v upon_o a_o duty_n though_o thou_o can_v not_o find_v thy_o heart_n prepare_v as_o thou_o do_v desire_v the_o very_a fall_n upon_o it_o will_v sit_v thou_o for_o it_o and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o answer_n unto_o those_o two_o case_n of_o conscience_n now_o than_o we_o be_v to_o proceed_v further_o in_o the_o open_n of_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n thus_o much_o for_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n but_o when_o the_o heart_n come_v to_o it_o in_o what_o manner_n shall_v the_o duty_n be_v perform_v so_o as_o the_o name_n of_o god_n may_v be_v sanctify_v in_o the_o duty_n or_o what_o be_v the_o behaviour_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n when_o it_o be_v in_o the_o very_a act_n of_o the_o duty_n to_o that_o i_o answer_v first_o in_o general_a thus_o when_o the_o soul_n labour_v to_o perform_v duty_n so_o as_o god_n may_v have_v such_o glory_n from_o the_o duty_n as_o be_v sit_v for_o a_o god_n to_o have_v in_o some_o measure_n then_o do_v i_o sanctify_v god_n name_n you_o will_v say_v this_o be_v a_o very_a hard_a thing_n to_o perform_v a_o duty_n so_o as_o that_o we_o shall_v give_v god_n the_o glory_n that_o be_v fit_a for_o a_o god_n to_o have_v certain_o this_o be_v not_o do_v by_o every_o manner_n of_o performance_n of_o a_o duty_n of_o worship_n yet_o you_o shall_v hear_v this_o open_v to_o you_o and_o i_o hope_v you_o shall_v have_v it_o make_v very_o plain_a before_o you_o first_o therefore_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o that_o when_o we_o be_v to_o perform_v a_o duty_n of_o worship_n we_o shall_v set_v ourselves_o to_o glorify_v god_n as_o a_o god_n that_o be_v to_o do_v it_o in_o that_o manner_n that_o god_n may_v have_v that_o glory_n that_o be_v fit_a for_o a_o
the_o least_o degree_n of_o grace_n the_o most_o glorious_a hypocrite_n in_o the_o world_n who_o it_o may_v be_v for_o the_o outward_a act_n do_v more_o than_o one_o that_o have_v true_a grace_n yet_o such_o a_o one_o do_v limit_v himself_o he_o do_v great_a thing_n but_o he_o do_v it_o so_o as_o he_o limit_n himself_o that_o be_v so_o much_o as_o may_v serve_v for_o such_o and_o such_o end_n of_o he_o so_o much_o as_o may_v serve_v his_o turn_n either_o to_o satisfy_v his_o conscience_n or_o to_o get_v credit_n and_o esteem_v to_o be_v account_v eminent_a in_o such_o a_o way_n so_o much_o he_o do_v do_v but_o his_o duty_n be_v always_o limit_v within_o such_o bound_n and_o if_o he_o can_v conceive_v that_o he_o may_v go_v to_o heaven_n and_o that_o he_o may_v have_v as_o much_o credit_n a_o god_n as_o we_o be_v now_o worship_v now_o then_o let_v we_o consider_v what_o the_o scrip_n ure_n say_v of_o god_n and_o then_o let_v we_o see_v what_o suitable_a disposition_n we_o shall_v prayer_n heretofore_o they_o will_v not_o have_v change_v one_o short_a time_n of_o private_a communion_n with_o god_n for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o pleasure_n and_o content_a in_o the_o world_n but_o now_o it_o be_v otherwise_o with_o they_o how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o these_o be_v apostatise_v thus_o from_o god_n sure_o here_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o it_o that_o they_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n at_o the_o most_o it_o be_v but_o a_o work_n of_o conscience_n that_o put_v they_o upon_o they_o and_o they_o have_v but_o some_o flash_n there_o be_v no_o real_a sanctification_n of_o their_o heart_n whereby_o they_o do_v sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o upon_o this_o it_o be_v that_o they_o have_v leave_v off_o this_o i_o dare_v say_v that_o there_o be_v never_o any_o soul_n that_o do_v know_v what_o it_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o worship_n that_o ever_o be_v weary_a of_o worship_v god_n it_o may_v be_v some_o of_o you_o may_v say_v we_o have_v hear_v that_o there_o be_v much_o require_v in_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o duty_n and_o that_o be_v the_o only_a way_n to_o weary_a the_o soul_n and_o to_o make_v it_o fall_v off_o oh_o no_o as_o we_o say_v the_o last_o day_n there_o be_v not_o any_o one_o thing_n that_o have_v be_v open_v for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o duty_n that_o any_o gracious_a heart_n can_v tell_v how_o to_o miss_v and_o the_o more_o we_o do_v sanctify_v his_o name_n the_o more_o we_o shall_v be_v in_o love_n with_o worship_n for_o it_o be_v from_o hence_o that_o those_o that_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o worship_n will_v hold_v out_o because_o they_o will_v find_v the_o sweetness_n of_o worship_n they_o will_v meet_v with_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o so_o they_o come_v to_o be_v encourage_v in_o worship_n but_o as_o for_o other_o who_o do_v worship_n god_n in_o a_o formal_a way_n their_o worship_n will_v prove_v to_o be_v tedious_a to_o they_o for_o they_o perform_v the_o duty_n but_o do_v not_o find_v god_n in_o the_o duty_n in_o that_o spiritual_a way_n as_o the_o saint_n do_v if_o they_o think_v they_o meet_v with_o god_n it_o be_v but_o a_o imagination_n rather_o than_o any_o real_a meeting_n with_o he_o they_o do_v not_o find_v the_o influence_n of_o god_n in_o their_o soul_n in_o holy_a duty_n so_o as_o those_o do_v that_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n here_o than_o you_o see_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n now_o then_o for_o the_o application_n of_o all_o this_o 1_o if_o all_o this_o which_o you_o have_v hear_v be_v require_v of_o we_o for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n hence_o we_o see_v how_o little_a cause_n we_o have_v to_o rest_v upon_o any_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o we_o do_v perform_v certain_o the_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o we_o perform_v be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v rest_v upon_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n and_o yet_o for_o the_o most_o part_n there_o be_v scarce_o any_o thing_n that_o people_n have_v to_o rest_v upon_o or_o to_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n for_o acception_n to_o eternal_a life_n but_o only_o their_o prayer_n and_o their_o come_n to_o hear_v and_o receive_v of_o the_o communion_n and_o such_o duty_n that_o they_o perform_v this_o be_v all_o they_o have_v to_o tender_v up_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n perhaps_o they_o may_v sometime_o speak_v of_o christ_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v that_o which_o their_o heart_n rest_v upon_o for_o acceptation_n to_o eternal_a life_n be_v this_o and_o be_v it_o but_o this_o it_o be_v a_o weak_a prop_n a_o rot_a reed_n that_o thou_o have_v to_o rest_v upon_o let_v the_o duty_n of_o worship_n be_v perform_v never_o so_o well_o suppose_v we_o do_v sanctify_v god_n name_n to_o the_o uttermost_a that_o be_v possible_a for_o any_o creature_n to_o do_v in_o this_o world_n yet_o such_o duty_n be_v not_o to_o be_v rest_v upon_o abraham_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n and_o the_o apostle_n the_o most_o holy_a man_n that_o ever_o do_v perform_v duty_n in_o the_o most_o holy_a manner_n yet_o woe_n to_o they_o if_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o rest_v upon_o but_o their_o duty_n consider_v therefore_o of_o this_o that_o what_o thou_o must_v rest_v upon_o for_o acceptation_n to_o eternal_a life_n it_o must_v be_v that_o that_o must_v have_v so_o much_o worth_n in_o it_o as_o must_v satisfy_v for_o all_o thy_o sin_n that_o former_o thou_o have_v commit_v yea_o and_o for_o all_o the_o sin_n that_o ever_o thou_o shall_v commit_v now_o i_o appeal_v unto_o any_o one_o conscience_n be_v that_o which_o thou_o perform_v as_o prayer_n or_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n or_o hear_v of_o upon_o nothing_o for_o my_o acceptation_n for_o life_n and_o salvation_n but_o that_o that_o must_v have_v such_o worth_n in_o it_o as_o to_o satisfy_v god_n for_o all_o my_o sin_n that_o ever_o have_v be_v commit_v or_o shall_v be_v commit_v this_o will_v take_v they_o off_o for_o ever_o from_o rest_v in_o duty_n yea_o and_o it_o must_v be_v such_o as_o must_v be_v the_o object_n of_o the_o infinite_a holiness_n of_o god_n to_o take_v content_a in_o sure_o the_o duty_n that_o we_o perform_v be_v no_o such_o duty_n to_o rest_n upon_o the_o truth_n be_v if_o we_o will_v serious_o consider_v what_o they_o be_v as_o they_o come_v from_o we_o we_o will_v even_o abhor_v ourselves_o in_o dust_n and_o ash_n and_o account_v of_o they_o as_o the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o his_o own_o righteousness_n as_o menstruous_a clothes_n they_o be_v such_o as_o if_o god_n shall_v deal_v with_o we_o as_o just_o he_o may_v do_v he_o may_v cast_v they_o and_o we_o to_o the_o dog_n for_o they_o be_v as_o the_o prophet_n say_v tear_v and_o rend_v sacrifice_n now_o if_o a_o man_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n shall_v bring_v to_o the_o lord_n a_o sacrifice_n that_o be_v all_o tear_v and_o holy_a duty_n many_o people_n think_v it_o a_o very_a easy_a matter_n to_o worship_n god_n and_o the_o worship_n that_o they_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n be_v a_o easy_a matter_n there_o be_v little_a in_o it_o if_o it_o be_v nothing_o else_o to_o worship_n god_n but_o mere_o to_o go_v and_o say_v a_o few_o prayer_n and_o come_v and_o hear_v a_o sermon_n and_o take_v a_o piece_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n than_o it_o be_v the_o easy_a matter_n in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v and_o worship_n god_n but_o there_o be_v more_o require_v in_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n than_o thou_o have_v be_v acquaint_v with_o there_o be_v a_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o it_o that_o text_n of_o scripture_n be_v a_o very_a famous_a one_o that_o show_v the_o difficulty_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o see_v what_o poor_a service_n god_n have_v general_o from_o the_o man_n and_o woman_n of_o the_o earth_n it_o shall_v make_v our_o heart_n bleed_v within_o we_o where_o almost_o be_v the_o man_n or_o uncleanness_n lie_v or_o wrong_v of_o other_o and_o such_o kind_n of_o sin_n as_o those_o be_v so_o that_o they_o see_v not_o such_o need_n of_o humiliation_n in_o this_o regard_n unless_o it_o be_v for_o that_o their_o nature_n be_v as_o corrupt_v as_o any_o though_o they_o break_v not_o forth_o into_o those_o actual_a gross_a sin_n but_o the_o main_a work_n of_o the_o humiliation_n of_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a it_o be_v to_o be_v humble_v for_o their_o thought_n for_o the_o mispending_a of_o time_n and_o for_o not_o sanctify_v of_o god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n those_o be_v the_o main_a thing_n that_o be_v the_o subject_n of_o the_o humiliation_n of_o the_o saint_n beside_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n that_o they_o carry_v about_o with_o they_o and_o it_o will_v be_v a_o good_a sign_n that_o thy_o heart_n have_v some_o tenderness_n in_o it_o when_o thou_o make_v these_o to_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o thy_o humiliation_n carnal_a people_n little_a be_v trouble_v for_o these_o if_o they_o fall_v into_o such_o sin_n as_o that_o their_o conscience_n do_v fly_v in_o their_o face_n than_o they_o be_v trouble_v and_o humble_v but_o for_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o word_n as_o god_n name_n may_v be_v sanctify_v in_o it_o their_o heart_n must_v be_v plough_v as_o if_o one_o shall_v sow_v seed_n upon_o green_a soil_n sow_v it_o in_o the_o field_n upon_o green_a grass_n what_o will_v become_v of_o it_o the_o ground_n must_v first_o be_v plough_v for_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o seed_n but_o you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o plow_a of_o our_o heart_n for_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o word_n the_o meaning_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o this_o the_o work_n of_o humiliation_n the_o humble_v of_o the_o soul_n before_o the_o lord_n when_o it_o do_v come_v to_o hear_v god_n word_n humble_v it_o in_o these_o two_o regard_n first_o be_v humble_v for_o your_o ignorance_n that_o you_o know_v so_o little_a of_o god_n mind_n as_o you_o do_v second_o be_v humble_v for_o all_o the_o sinfulness_n of_o your_o heart_n be_v sensible_a of_o the_o sinfulness_n and_o wretchedness_n of_o your_o heart_n and_o the_o miserable_a conditon_n that_o you_o be_v in_o if_o you_o can_v get_v your_o heart_n break_v with_o the_o sense_n of_o your_o sin_n and_o misery_n and_o come_v so_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n it_o be_v very_o like_o the_o word_n may_v be_v of_o mighty_a use_n and_o god_n name_n may_v be_v very_o much_o sanctify_v in_o your_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n you_o will_v say_v must_v we_o plough_v up_o our_o heart_n before_o we_o come_v to_o hear_v it_o must_v be_v the_o word_n that_o must_v plough_v we_o the_o word_n be_v the_o plough_n and_o so_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n be_v compare_v to_o plowman_n in_o the_o word_n he_o that_o put_v his_o hand_n to_o the_o plough_n and_o look_n back_o be_v not_o fit_a for_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n it_o be_v true_a it_o can_v be_v expect_v that_o the_o heart_n shall_v be_v thorough_o plough_v as_o it_o ought_v but_o by_o the_o word_n therefore_o at_o the_o first_o come_v to_o hear_v there_o be_v not_o hope_v that_o man_n will_v sanctify_v god_n name_n somewhat_o may_v be_v do_v before_o by_o that_o natural_a knowledge_n that_o man_n have_v they_o may_v come_v to_o know_v themselves_o to_o be_v sinner_n and_o come_v to_o understand_v themselves_o to_o be_v very_o weak_a and_o ignorant_a by_o some_o knowledge_n that_o they_o may_v have_v by_o the_o work_n of_o god_n and_o by_o conference_n with_o other_o and_o by_o read_v and_o the_o like_a and_o so_o they_o may_v in_o some_o measure_n come_v to_o have_v their_o heart_n to_o be_v humble_v and_o it_o be_v good_a to_o make_v use_n of_o there_o to_o humble_v the_o heart_n but_o now_o you_o that_o have_v hear_v the_o word_n often_o and_o yet_o have_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n there_o be_v truth_n that_o you_o have_v hear_v heretofore_o that_o if_o you_o have_v make_v use_n of_o in_o private_a to_o have_v plough_v up_o your_o heart_n they_o will_v have_v prepare_v your_o heart_n for_o the_o next_o time_n in_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n if_o therefore_o you_o will_v hear_v the_o word_n with_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o profit_n than_o former_o your_o heart_n must_v be_v plough_v by_o humiliation_n 2_o second_o tâ—â—_n heart_n must_v be_v plough_v by_o labour_v to_o get_v out_o those_o thorn_n that_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n those_o lust_n that_o grow_v deep_a in_o the_o heart_n as_o thorn_n grow_v in_o the_o ground_n labour_v to_o pluck_v they_o out_o that_o be_v when_o thou_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n get_v thy_o heart_n into_o that_o frame_n as_o to_o be_v willing_a to_o profess_v against_o every_o know_a in_o that_o thou_o have_v find_v in_o thy_o heart_n labour_v to_o find_v out_o those_o lust_n that_o be_v in_o thy_o heart_n and_o then_o profess_v against_o they_o that_o thou_o be_v willing_a to_o have_v they_o to_o be_v roâ—tâ—d_v out_o of_o thy_o heart_n if_o man_n and_o woman_n will_v but_o do_v thus_o when_o they_o come_v to_o bear_v that_o god_n may_v see_v this_o in_o they_o that_o they_o have_v before_o they_o come_v profess_v gâ—â—nâ—t_v thou_o be_v please_v to_o put_v in_o a_o key_n that_o may_v fit_v my_o heart_n it_o will_v never_o open_v man_n he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o know_v my_o heart_n and_o therefore_o he_o can_v fit_v a_o not_o thou_o look_v upon_o that_o as_o a_o curse_a thing_n that_o make_v christ_n to_o be_v a_o curse_n oh_o with_o what_o detestation_n will_v a_o man_n or_o woman_n fling_v away_o such_o a_o knife_n and_o with_o the_o like_a detestation_n it_o be_v require_v that_o thou_o shall_v renounce_v sin_n for_o that_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n i_o remember_v it_o be_v report_v of_o anthony_n when_o caesar_n be_v slay_v he_o come_v to_o stir_v up_o the_o people_n against_o those_o that_o have_v slay_v caesar_n and_o he_o take_v the_o clothes_n that_o be_v bloody_a and_o hold_v they_o forth_o to_o the_o people_n and_o say_v here_o be_v the_o blood_n of_o your_o emperor_n and_o upon_o that_o the_o people_n be_v enrage_v against_o those_o that_o have_v slay_v he_o and_o and_o thirst_v of_o the_o soul_n after_o jesus_n christ_n whosoever_o come_v hither_o

speak_v unto_o solomon_n and_o bid_v he_o ask_v what_o he_o shall_v give_v he_o i_o very_o believe_v there_o be_v many_o in_o this_o congregation_n that_o have_v already_o good_a assurance_n of_o god_n love_n in_o christ_n if_o they_o have_v not_o that_o that_o will_v be_v the_o main_a thing_n that_o they_o will_v ask_v but_o have_v attain_v that_o if_o god_n will_v speak_v from_o heaven_n and_o say_v what_o shall_v i_o give_v you_o for_o yourselves_o if_o he_o shall_v ask_v you_o in_o the_o general_n it_o may_v be_v you_o will_v ask_v something_o for_o the_o church_n but_o if_o it_o be_v for_o yourselves_o you_o will_v put_v up_o this_o petition_n oh_o lord_n that_o i_o may_v be_v deliver_v from_o a_o wander_a spirit_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o especial_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n that_o i_o may_v thereby_o come_v to_o enjoy_v more_o holy_a communion_n with_o thyself_o than_o ever_o yet_o i_o enjoy_v and_o they_o will_v account_v this_o to_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n than_o if_o god_n shall_v give_v they_o to_o be_v king_n or_o queen_n over_o the_o whole_a world_n if_o god_n shall_v put_v these_o two_o into_o the_o balance_n either_o the_o whole_a world_n to_o possess_v or_o otherwise_o to_o have_v more_o free_a heart_n in_o come_v to_o god_n in_o prayer_n and_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o that_o that_o have_v so_o much_o hinder_v their_o communion_n with_o god_n in_o prayer_n they_o will_v despise_v and_o scorn_v the_o the_o world_n in_o comparison_n of_o such_o a_o mercy_n as_o this_o be_v howsoever_o carnal_a heart_n they_o think_v little_a of_o it_o
